Message from CEO Thank you to everyone who supported PCYC embRACE this year. As you will see, it was a fantastic day out enjoyed by more than 1,000 participants, community members and volunteers!

I am always pleased to share the many events and positive things happening across the state, including Indigenous events in celebration of Reconciliation Week, PCYC Redcliffe trampoline gymnasts becoming National Champions and positive stories from PCYC Braking the Cycle participants across the state.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Senior Sergeant Rob Fiedler as he retires after 37 years of dedicated service to the community. As former PCYC Queensland CEO and branch manager of numerous PCYC Queensland clubs, Rob’s outstanding leadership and experience will be missed.

PCYC embRACE 2019 Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported our signature event PCYC embRACE for the second year, held on Sunday, 9 June at Bill Norris Oval.

It was a fantastic day out, that offered something for everyone, enjoyed by more 1,000 community members and 750 challenge participants!

Thank you to all the staff, participants and volunteers who helped us with this wonderful event, the positive feedback from the community has been wonderful.

And congratulations go to The Stikeez and PCYC Carindale as highest fundraisers, who also won the personal meet ‘n’ greet with Jeff Horn!

Without the dedication of staff, clubs and volunteers, this event would not have been possible.

Well done to all the PCYC Queensland clubs who were involved, especially with our youth teams, and special thanks to the Media, Marketing, Communication & Fundraising (MMC&F) team for making the event a success for the second year.

Zone 1 – Far North Queensland PCYC Mount Isa provides Indigenous Seniors Games for Elders

PCYC Aurukun celebrates National Reconciliation Week

For several weeks, PCYC Mount Isa partnered with Gidgee Healing Mt Isa to provide a program for Indigenous Elders, who came to the club every week to participate in ‘Indigenous Seniors Games’.

PCYC Aurukun celebrated National Reconciliation Week with a Colour Run and BBQ. Reconciliation Week is all about celebrating Indigenous history and culture while fostering reconciliation discussions and activities.

With the help of staff from Transition 2 Success (T2S), Aurukun State School, Cape York Employment, Apunipima, Queensland Health, Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women and the Aurukun Police, the day was a success.

The day gave Elders the chance to get together, socialise and play games such as darts, ten pin bowling, numbers board, hole in the wall and floor quoits, while having an opportunity to beat their personal best and compete against each other! The mornings were always finished off with lunch and a cuppa.

Congratulations to Andre, Brayden, Darrus and Fergus who are one step closer to representing Aurukun at the National Deadly Fun Run Championships at Uluru!

Sergeant Agnelle Bagetti also joined the kids at PCYC Aurukun in their run and festivities.

PCYC Mareeba congratulates Catch Me If You Can participants Congratulations to Indigenous students from Mareeba State High School who recently took part in the mentoring program Catch Me If You Can (CMIYC) at PCYC Mareeba, aimed at fostering strong connections between young people and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

Designed to use sport to develop and improve relationships between Indigenous school students and local police, CMIYC is an innovative youth mentoring program unique to PCYC Queensland.

Following the CMIYC presentation, participants visited Kuranda Rainforest Station for a cultural experience which they really enjoyed. It was great that it was something they’d never been to before!

Zone 2 – North Queensland PCYC Bowen’s PREP program journey This term has seen some of the Year 5 girls from Bowen State School begin their P.R.E.P program journey. The girls have been busy learning leadership skills, resilience, teamwork, effective communication and linking with strong women in the community.

Recently, they headed to Le Sorelles where they undertook a floral workshop.

During this session the girls needed to think about people in their lives who support them and make them a beautiful bouquet to show their appreciation.

They learnt that thanking people and giving them a gift of gratitude can not only lift their spirits but also make you feel good on the inside.

PCYC Upper Ross kids compete in the local triathlon PCYC Upper Ross Indigenous Programs team took 12 children to participate in the Townsville Weet-Bix TRYathalon held on the Strand. It was a fun day for all, with three participants coming first in their age groups. Well done to everyone who participated!

PCYC Burdekin boxers have great wins!

Congratulations to young PCYC Burdekin boxers, Lucas and Justin who were both winners at the recent kids boxing tournament at PCYC Cloncurry’s Fight Night. Well done to all, the event was a huge success!

PCYC Burdekin is proud of our boxing program, and the positive impact on the local community – as boxing benefits young people to be disciplined, motivated and allows them to set goals, which all are essential for youth development.

Zone 3 – Central Queensland PCYC Bundaberg and PCYC Hervey Bay partner up to build a mobile gymnastics trailer PCYC Bundaberg and PCYC Hervey Bay have partnered up to build an all-purpose mobile gymnastics trailer that can be used across the Bundaberg and Hervey Bay communities. PCYC Hervey Bay kindly provided the trailer, and PCYC Bundaberg will revamp it to complete the project, hopefully to be operational by October.

PCYC Biloela’s charity golf day Despite the wonderful bit of rain, PCYC Biloela’s Charity Golf Day on Saturday, 8 June was a great success.

Thank you to all the sponsors, players and volunteers who braved the cold and drizzly rain to come along to our golf day and congratulations to our overall winners Matt Middleton and Joe Brennan.

Both clubs have thanked Sergeant Kelly Chamberlain and her wonderful team for the trailer and are looking forward to creating a great service for communities. We all look forward to seeing the remodelled result!

PCYC Redcliffe trampoline gymnasts become National Champions!

Congratulations to PCYC Redcliffe Trampoline gymnasts, Edward Clark-Enslow and Joel McFarlane, and Double mini-trampoline gymnast Charmonie Benson-Inglis, for all becoming National Champions for 2019!

These gymnasts were all part of the Queensland Team who were awarded one International Stream Team Award and all five National State Team Awards! This is a huge achievement for PCYC Redcliffe, and all gymnasts were honoured to represent the club and Queensland.

Zone 4 – South West Queensland PCYC Dalby reach five year milestone for PCYC Braking the Cycle In April, PCYC Dalby celebrated five years of delivering PCYC Braking the Cycle, that has seen over 150 participants receive their licence! Braking the Cycle Coordinator, Kelly Ryan, says Dalby is a remote area where public transport is limited and this program fills a void and need for the learners who don’t have access to a vehicle or a supervisor.

Congratulations and thank you to all the volunteers that make this program happen!

PCYC Crestmead’s youth team implement street art program PCYC Crestmead’s youth team have implemented a street art program for disengaged young people from Shailer Park State High School. PCYC Crestmead Program Coordinator, Joel Tuita, connected with the students to get involved with the program.

The young people were given ownership and responsibility to lead the project from planning, setup and design through to delivery.

The program resulted in young people learning about the history of street art with Graffiti artist Zac Brash, to painting the mural of the school values. Joel was proud of all the participants and said, “they learned how to do a mural and characters, and harness that into their own profession and get paid for doing jobs”.

Zone 5 – South East Queensland PCYC Lang Park legends!

Congratulations to Tom McPhail, PCYC Lang Park’s Sport and Recreation Manager, who recently participated in PCYC embRACE on Sunday, 9 June.

Not only did Tom take on the challenge, but he was the only participant to run non-stop during the course of the three waves – completing six laps, running more than 15kms and fundraising over $450! Well done Tom! Congratulations also go to the PCYC Lang Park wrestlers who recently competed in Wrestling Australia’s 2019 Nationals Championships and won placings, including Winston Timmermans, Liam Neyland, Tony Parr, Joel Stephenson and Jackson Andreatidis.

PCYC Zillmere and PCYC Sandgate celebrate second anniversary of Braking the Cycle PCYC Sandgate and PCYC Zillmere have marked their second anniversary of Braking the Cycle with the graduation of Savannah Knight, the program’s 19th P-plater.

“My family had limited opportunity to provide driving hours for me and I couldn’t afford driving lessons without a job,” said Savannah. “It would have taken me much longer to achieve the hours of experience if I had to rely on family or friends to assist me or try and save for lessons. Now ... I can travel without having to hassle my parents for a lift or taking public transport, which can take hours. I can also now apply for work and have transport to attend.”

PCYC Ashmore helping to fight back against Parkinson’s PCYC Ashmore have recently started the Knock Out Parkinson’s Disease, or KOPD, Boxing Program, to help reduce and even delay the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Held on Tuesday mornings, the class includes boxing technique and functional strength exercises suitably designed to assist and empower people suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Hundreds of participants have attended classes, which has helped to overcome their symptoms and improve their strength, mobility and coordination.

Health and Wellbeing Corner National Diabetes Week 2019

National Diabetes Week 2019 runs from 14 – 20 20 July. Did you know that 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That is one person every five minutes and it is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia as more than 100,000 Australians have developed diabetes in the past year. There are different types of diabetes; the three most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Strong international evidence shows diabetes prevention programs can help prevent type 2 diabetes in up to 58% of cases. You can do a lot to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. People at risk of type 2 diabetes can delay and even prevent the condition by maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, making healthy food choices, managing blood pressure, managing cholesterol levels and not smoking.

Symptoms of diabetes can include frequent urination, increased thirst, always feeling hungry, feeling very tired, blurry vision, slow healing of cuts and wounds, tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands or feet, and patches of dark skin. If you have any concerns about your health, please contact your health care professional.

PCYC Queensland delivers 3x3 Street Hustle tour of the Gulf PCYC Queensland Indigenous Programs team in partnership with the National Basketball League (NBL) and supported by Australian Indigenous Basketball, were excited to deliver a 3x3 Street Hustle tour of the Gulf, across Mt Isa, Doomadgee, Mornington Island and Normanton.

The NBLs 3x3Hustle is Australia’s only 3x3 basketball competition framework endorsed by Basketball Australia and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as FIBA, and is the official pathway in Australia.

The great Street Hustle tour included Indigenous basketball clinics held at schools, and 3x3 Street Hustle Tournaments run in Indigenous Communities. Well done to all involved!

National Volunteer Week 2019 As part of our National Volunteer Week celebrations, PCYC Queensland nominated 17 individual volunteers and two of our programs in the Volunteering Queensland (VQ) Volunteer Awards. VQ informed us that we had a strong representation in all categories that we entered, of which there were over 250 entries. From the nominations PCYC Queensland had three finalists: Barry Ransom and Mary Otto for the ‘Lifetime Contributions to Volunteering Award’, and Braking the Cycle for the ‘Volunteering Impact Award’.

We congratulate all our nominees as well as the managers who support our volunteering programs, and especially our three finalists who have shown they continually go above and beyond!

Farewell to Rob Fiedler Congratulations to Senior Sergeant Rob Fiedler, who recently retired after 37 years of dedicated service in the Queensland Police Service from 22 March 1982 to 17 June 2019. His recent farewell was held on 14 June at PCYC Beenleigh.

As former PCYC Queensland Chief Executive Officer and Branch Manager of numerous PCYC Queensland clubs across his career, Senior Sergeant Fiedler’s outstanding leadership and experience will be missed.

Throughout Senior Sergeant Fiedler’s career, he was granted numerous awards including ■■ National Medal ■■ 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 Year Clasp to the Queensland Police Service Medal ■■ 1st and 2nd Clasp to the National Medal ■■ 2010 and 2011 Queensland Flood and Cyclone Citation ■■ National Police Service Medal ■■ Queensland Police 150 Years Citation ■■ G20 Citation ■■ XXI Commonwealth Games Citation Thank you Senior Sergeant Fiedler, and good luck!

Other News continued... Staff Member Profiles Fun at PCYC Acacia Ridge vacation care PCYC Acacia Ridge outside school hours care recently held some wonderful events during their last vacation care program, including rock climbing and ‘Rock at the Ridge’ concert!

The rock climbing was lots of fun and allowed the children to conquer their fear of heights. ‘Rock at the Ridge’ offered a day to get creative and put on a rock concert, and featured three art stations to get creative. At station one, kids could choose items from the recycling station to become instruments.

Station two was where they could create and decorate their instruments, and at station three Miss Morgan helped makeover the children into rock stars using face paint! To finish it all off, they all created band and got practicing with our songs. Lots of fun was had by all!

Pat Ghebosu OSHC Service Manager When did you start at PCYC Queensland?

I started at PCYC Castle Hill in August 2004, as an Admin volunteer.

What do you like most about working at PCYC Queensland?

Coming from a non-English speaking country, I was worried about working not only in a new industry but in a new country as well. However, the PCYC Queensland team embraced me for who I am, believed in me and supported me throughout the years, allowing me to grow and discover things about myself that I wasn’t even aware of.

I got to experience first-hand our core values such as teamwork, respect, leadership and to be inspired by the passion and commitment of the people around me.

What has been the highlight over your years of service?

During my 15 years employment with PCYC Queensland I have been given the opportunity to work in various positions in both Administration and Outside School Hours Care (OSHC). Over the years I have faced many challenges, but I have also enjoyed many good moments!

It is hard to name one thing that has really stood out for me, but I think the relationships that I have built throughout the years with families, customers and staff have given me a sense of accomplishment for a job well done.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

PCYC Queensland has changed since I have started here 15 years ago, and I am excited to see where the future will take us.

In my current position as OSHC Service Manager, I can see how the latest changes have helped us to increase the quality of our programs.

I would love to see PCYC Queensland OSHC becoming the preferred choice for families and schools when it comes to delivering OSHC programs!

What opportunities have you gained from being connected to PCYC Queensland?

Why did you join PCYC Queensland?

Apart from learning to master the art of safe driving, I am able to broaden my social networking group with the people I meet at PCYC Logan. I am also able to give back to the community through volunteering at social events, and I continue to learn new things everyday from my mentors.

The main focus of joining PCYC Queensland was to get into the Braking the Cycle Program. With my line of work, one of the major requirements is to have a driving licence and a car and it’s quite challenging when everyone at home is so busy with work. With the difference of working schedules, there is almost no time for anyone to take me for driving lessons which is why I opted to join PCYC Logan’s Braking the Cycle program when the suggestion came about.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with PCYC Queensland?

At PCYC Logan there is always a sense of family, of community, and once you engage yourself with one thing, or in one program, you will always find the urge to explore something more. It doesn’t just stop with you, so you engage with others from your circle to experience it as well. Also at PCYC Logan, no two days are the same, so it gets better every time!

What advice would you give a young person thinking of engaging with their local PCYC Queensland club?

Never to hold back when you have the chance. You never know the impact someone or something will have on yourself until you experience it and with organisations like PCYC Queensland you can be sure that you will have lasting memories and a skill set that will prepare you for the bigger world.

What is your favourite PCYC moment?

Volunteering for PCYC Logan, doing ground work for the renovation of the gymnasium and being involved at PCYC embRACE. What does the future hold for you?

New career possibilities and more volunteering with PCYC Logan!

In memoriam

Joyce Elizabeth Kelly 20 August 1930 – 8 June 2019 Joyce Kelly was a PCYC Queensland Diamond Life Member and was also a member of the Board of Directors and travelled all over the state visiting clubs.

Born in 1930, Joyce was the only child of John and Emily Geraghty, and was raised in Colton, outside Maryborough, where her father was the station master for Queensland Railways. A former resident of Wondai in the 50s and 60s, Joyce trained as a registered nurse at Wondai Hospital where she met her future husband, fellow nurse Eugene Peter Kelly. Joyce and Eugene married in 1955 and were involved with various community organisations.

The family moved to Brisbane in 1966 and Joyce and Peter both continued nursing. They also continued to be involved with community organisations, including PCYC Queensland, and both Joyce and her late husband became PCYC Queensland Diamond Life Members in 1994 and 1992 respectively.

Fundraising Features Aimee Sewell fundraising for PCYC Mount Isa through Isa Rodeo ‘Queen Quest’!

Selected as an entrant in the 2019 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo ‘Queen Quest’, Mount Isa school based police officer, Acting Senior Constable Aimee Sewell, has been doing a fantastic job raising funds for PCYC Mount Isa since December 2018!

Enlisting the help of volunteers to assist her at fundraising events, Aimee’s growing number of followers have now been dubbed ‘Aimee’s Army’!

Ms Sewell said she chose to raise funds for PCYC Mount Isa because its programs and services assist with building a safer, healthier community through positive youth development.

“My priority is to educate young people about their rights to feel safe no matter where they are, and how to report a situation that they are feeling unsafe,” said Ms Sewell.

Over the past eight months, Aimee has organised a number of community fundraising events, including cyber safety presentations, community discos and movie nights, raffles and most recently a 24-hour exercise challenge!

“The rodeo has the ability to bring all community members together and Isa Queen Quest is a great platform to promote community safety and to strengthen my relationships with my community,” Aimee said.

The Isa Rodeo Queen and Isa Rodeo Charity Queen will be crowned at the Mount Isa Rodeo Ball on 3 August. Good luck Aimee and well done on your amazing efforts so far!

PCYC Lottery winners!

Congratulations to one of our recent and very lucky PCYC Lottery winners and long-time supporters, Carol. Carol has been a VIP supporter of PCYC Queensland for a number of years through the PCYC Lottery and is especially grateful for PCYC Queensland staff, volunteers and the Queensland Police Service officers who are helping build safer, healthier communities through youth development.

Carol’s granddaughter, Taylah-Marie, is now involved in PCYC Queensland and loves being able to make friends while engaging in a number of programs and activities that help her build confidence in performing for her school drama classes. As a third generation PCYC Queensland member, Taylah-Marie loves going to her local PCYC Club and recommends that other young people should just ‘go for it and get involved’.
