Palouse Discovery Science Center (PDSC) is a nonprofit organization that exists to connect children of all ages to their families, communities and the world beyond through interactive STEAM exploration. We envision a future where all children can fulfill their potential and become engaged community members and global citizens, equipped with a strong foundation in science, critical thinking and creativity. We offer a wide array of facilitated programs including Mudskippers Outdoor Group, regular live science demonstrations and Creativity Lab. We also continue to collaborate with community partners on a monthly Science Pub, Free Family Science Nights and regular outreach events across the Palouse. Birthday parties and private rentals are also popular.
In the past few years, PDSC achieved a few significant milestones. In 2023, PDSC became a member of the Museums for All program, which provides free admission for people receiving food assistance (EBT). • Pullman Young Professionals PDSC also just recently completed certification through KultureCity as a Sensory Inclusive location. These two initiatives help remove barriers to education for many families. In October 2024, the PDSC had a Silver • Washington Trust Bank Jubilee event to celebrate 25 years in operation. • WSU International Programs The center operates with a small paid staff, numerous volunteers NEW MEMBERS • WSU University Marketing and a volunteer Board of Directors. As a nonprofit, our operations are largely supported by grants, sponsorships and donations. The Food & Shelter Folks Meet the Staff: Carlos Rojo, Food Bank Coordinator Tell me about your job position at Community Action Center. I’m the food bank coordinator; I basically do a little bit of everything. I pick up produce, work on procuring food for food rescue, do food distributions, and coordinate with the community to get food to the food bank. Everything to help coordinate the food bank and distribute food. What do you like about your work? I like being on the front lines fighting food insecurity. It’s very rewarding and it feels right to help support my community. I like being involved. What is challenging about your work? It’s kind of unpredictable, with everything going on federally, and also Idaho has adopted certain policies that increased the visits of people from Idaho to our food bank. With this work you never know what could happen next! What would you like to tell the community? I’d encourage them to donate and get involved in their local food bank, and to get involved in their community. It’s so important to build relationships with other community members and network with others. It’s amazing what you can accomplish. For example, I read recently about a small fire and community members got together to put it out; that was so heroic to me. If we all get involved and get to know each other, stories like that can happen. What do you like to do in your free time? I really like music; it’s a way that I de-stress and decompress. I like to make music and listen to music. I dabble; all that jazz. I know a little bit of guitar, and I use a DJ controller, mixing music and DJing.

Pullman School Board Sets Strategic Plan Goals for the 2025–2026 School Year Bob Maxwell, Superintendent
On July 16, 2025, the Pullman Public Schools Board of Directors held its annual Board Retreat to set the course for the upcoming school year. Guided by the District’s mission and vision, the Board established strategic plan goals for 2025–2026 and aligned each to The Pullman Promise, the district’s strategic plan, ensuring that the work ahead directly supports long-term student success. What is The Pullman Promise? The Pullman Promise is the Pullman Public Schools’ strategic plan a shared commitment to ensuring that every student is challenged, supported, and prepared for success. It serves as the district’s longterm roadmap, aligning resources, programs, and initiatives with clearly defined goals. The 2025–2026 School Board goals are directly connected to The Pullman Promise, ensuring consistent focus on student learning, safe and supportive schools, and strong community partnerships. Mission: Ensuring learning while challenging and supporting each student to achieve full potential. Vision: A shared commitment to continuous improvement, excellence, and a focus on student learning and achievement.
2025–2026 Strategic Plan Goals
1. Ensure a caring and safe environment that cultivates the highest levels of learning.
2. Foster a growth mindset that values diverse beliefs and experiences. 3. Plan expenditures to meet students’ educational needs. 4. Empower stakeholders to collaborate and innovate for the future. 5. Monitor teaching and learning; enhance curriculum, instruction, and assessment. 6. Support professional development, quality facilities, and sustainable initiatives. 7. Grow and strengthen community partnerships. Measuring Success: Each goal includes success indicators that will be monitored and shared with the Board throughout the year, ensuring transparency, focus, and responsiveness to student needs. Engaging the Community: The Board’s 2025–2026 plan includes Board Listening Sessions and a Communication Plan and Schedule to gather input from families, staff, students, and community members. Our strategic plan is not just a document it’s a commitment to our students, staff, and community to continuously improve and work together toward excellence. ristin Lincoln is a recognized leader for the arts and culture in communities across the Palouse. She is known as an effective champion and coalition builder in support of broad access to creative and cultural programming and experiences in the region. Since 2018, Kristin has led the Washington Idaho Symphony, bringing orchestral music to rural communities. She’s also held various roles in regional theatre and holds degrees from SFCC and WSU. She shared the following thoughts on the Pullman Center. What do you value about the community college? What I value most about the community college is its accessibility, flexibility, and the strong connection it maintains with the community it serves. The Center plays an especially vital role by offering meaningful educational opportunities to students who may not be ready or able to attend a fouryear university right away. One of the Center’s greatest strengths is its unique relationship with WSU. This partnership gives students access to a wide range of
What truly surprises me about the Pullman Center is just how many WSU resources are now available to its students. When I was a student there, those connections were still developing, and they didn’t yet offer the incredible range of university-level opportunities that are available today. It’s amazing to see that students at the Center now get the best of both worlds—small class sizes, personalized instruction, and affordable tuition through the community college system, combined with access to WSU facilities, programs, and services that enrich both their academic and personal lives. It’s a special place— one that continues to grow while still holding onto the close-knit, studentfocused environment that makes it so unique. What do you hope the Pullman Center will look like in 5 to 10 years? In the next 5 to 10 years, I hope to see the Pullman Center continue to thrive and fulfill its mission of providing accessible, high-quality education to our community. I would love to see the Center grow even further—expanding its class offerings, adding new degree and certificate programs, and continuing to strengthen its partnership with WSU. The more opportunities the Center can provide, the more lives it can impact, whether for students looking to transfer to a university or for community members seeking personal or professional growth. It’s a vital resource in Pullman, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

All That Matters: A Group Exhibition Featuring Chelsea Jacobs, David Janssen Jr., and Krista Brand Washington State University's Department of Art presents All That Matters, a group exhibition exploring how materials shape meaning in contemporary art. The exhibition features work by Chelsea Jacobs, David Janssen, Jr., and Krista Brand, three artists who transform collected and repurposed materials into powerful statements about personal history and cultural memory. On view through October 10, the exhibition showcases painting, fiber, and installation works that reveal the stories embedded in everyday objects and materials. Each artist responds to personal histories and cultural moments through their innovative use of transformed materials, creating works that simultaneously honor origins while pointing toward new possibilities. A panel discussion and reception will be held at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., respectively, on Thursday, Sept. 4 in the WSU Fine Arts Center.
