The Gladish Community and Cultural Center August Events

Community Action Center’s Garden program is growing! Our new greenhouse is installed and will be finished early this fall. The 30 ft x 24 ft greenhouse is located next to Palouse Discovery Science Center on Hopkins Court. With the greenhouse, we can grow more fresh, local fruits and vegetables for Community Food’s food bank and Mobile Farm Stand customers on a year-round basis. The greenhouse will also produce food for cooking classes, food demonstrations, and tastetesting.

Community Food Bank Gardener Claire MacPherson will team up with Palouse Discovery Science Center to bring gardening education at the greenhouse to local children. She will also hold family gardening classes such as “Seed to Table Gardening” in the new space. Avista Foundation, Washington State Department of Agriculture, Washington Federal Foundation, Whitman County Health Foundation, and local donors provided funding for the greenhouse.

From Associate Administrator to Assistant Principal Kelsey Winningham, Franklin & Kamiak Elementary Assistant Principal

Two years ago, Pullman School District had two open positions for Associate Administrators between the four elementary schools. This was a new position and one that was going to add an extra layer of support for our elementary schools. After interviewing, I was offered the job and started my position on July 1, 2021. This opportunity was one I was excited for as I was now able to utilize my administration degree and come back HOME. I grew up in Colfax, WA and spent 18 years in Whitman County before moving to Nampa, ID to attend college and then teach for five years in fifth grade.

Associate Administrator to Assistant Principal

from Colfax High School and continued my education at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, ID where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. I was offered a fifth-grade teaching job at Iowa Elementary in Nampa, ID and spent 2016-2021 teaching fifth grade, which I absolutely loved! During my time teaching, I decided I wanted to go back to school to get my master's degree in educational administration. In October of 2019, I graduated from Grand Canyon University with my degree in administration. I taught for a few more years before making the move to Pullman. In July 2021, I was called back to Whitman County and have spent the past two years in our wonderful community.

My husband and I have both loved being back in Whitman County. We have our goldendoodle, Maggie, who keeps us very busy, and will add another addition to our family this fall. Ryan and I are expecting our first child, our daughter, in October 2023. We are so blessed with the opportunity to raise a child in such a close-knit, small community. We recently built a house as well. So, between our dog, our baby on the way, and new house projects, we are thrilled for all the adventures these coming months will bring.

Franklin & Kamiak Elementary Assistant Principal

In my new assignment, I was working between Franklin and Jefferson Elementary. The early days on the job were spent connecting with staff members, getting familiar with systems in place, and learning more about what my job would entail once school began again. I was eager and hungry to begin a career in school administration in a new place; one that was near and dear to my heart. Now, here we are two years later, and I have now been selected to be an elementary assistant principal. The extra layers of support that these positions add to our staff, students, and families are invaluable. I am excited to continue to work in the Pullman School District supporting the many various members of our Pullman community and school community that I get to work alongside. I want to take this time to introduce myself further and help you get to know me a bit better!

This is my 8th year in education. I grew up in Colfax, WA and participated in my parents’ restaurants from a young age: Top Notch Café and Bulldog Pizza. From six years old, I learned the importance of hard work and was waiting tables before I could even drive. I graduated

Life Changing Experiences through Career and Technical Education (CTE)

One of the great things about Pullman Schools is the diversity of coursework that is available to the students. Just last month, Jill Bickelhaupt, Director of CTE for the Pullman School District (PSD) gave a presentation on the CTE programs currently being offered at both Lincoln Middle School (LMS) and at Pullman High School (PHS). Jill indicated that the CTE programs have continued to expand, as they provide students with both academic and technical skills, and the knowledge and training to succeed in current and future careers in highly sought after jobs.

Jill added that the CTE programs encompass a good selection of classes in business; computer applications, agriculture and natural sciences, and on-the-job experiences using the tools that are used in the professions, including state-of-the-art equipment and software to directly allow students the opportunity to learn the processes and prepare them for their future careers.

Jill wanted the Board and the community to also know that CTE is designed for both career and college preparation, with multiple options for dual credit, cross-credit; and certification opportunities.

Through the Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment (CLNA) it was determined that CTE courses service a valuable role in opening up opportunities for the students, as well as providing an environment that nurtures social and emotional wellbeing.

A few of the purposes of the CLNA for the 2023-2024 school year include the opportunity to examine the success of PSD CTE programs through an equity lens. This ensures certain programs of study are aligned to, and validated by, local/regional workforce needs and economic priorities, and ensures the CTE programs engage key stakeholders regularly around quality and academic/workforce CTE programs.

Mr. Matthews has had 20 years of experience teaching in the agricultural and natural sciences, with the past six years being a valued part of the CTE team at PHS.

In addition to serving as a teacher in Biology and Natural Sciences and Agricultural Physical Sciences, Rob teaches upper level courses in which students can earn college credit through WWCC: Plant Sciences – Horticulture; and Animal–Veterinary Sciences. He also serves as the advisor for the PHS Chapter of the National FFA Organization, formerly called Future Farmers of America (FFA). I learned they changed the name 35 years ago to reflect the wide range of careers and industries within Agriculture that includes anything from engineering, law, and of course science and production.

I posed the question to Rob, with such diverse subject matter, what are his favorite subject areas; and how does he keep the students engaged in both taking classes, as well as advising the FFA chapter? Rob does everything he can to assist students in becoming successful. He is very dedicated about making sure all the curriculum he uses in his classes, are aligned with science course material consistent with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS); state-of-theart skills as recommended by the Curriculum for Agriculture Science Education (CASE); and getting valuable advice from the CTE Advisory Committee at PSD*.

Mr. Matthews’ goals each year are to have the various FFA teams (for example: Public Speaking; Ag Communications; Ag Sales & Service; and Horse and Potato Judging) place in the top 5 of every competition. This enables the students to not only learn about leadership, but also what it means to make a commitment and learn career-life skills.

The City of Pullman will be replacing the water line that was damaged in April near Kamiaken Street in the Palouse River. The installa�on began on July 24 and will last 3-4 weeks, ending in mid-August. This project is scheduled to be completed prior to the Len�l Fes�val and the start of WSU’s fall semester. NE Olsen St., from the Neill Public Library parking lot entrance to Kamiaken St., will be closed for the dura�on of the project.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE(S) – WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN

One difference is obvious. A new green tile roof replaces the previous red metal roof shown in the 2019 image. But “new” and “old” should be qualified. The new tile roof (with a 75-year warranty) is a replica of the original. Less conspicuous differences include fully restored masonry with important decorative sandstone elements repaired, and bricks freshly cleaned and repointed. And just as the building is under restoration, so is the site. Behind the Depot, invasive weeds are being removed and the hillside is being cultivated with native plant species. It is a remarkable amount of progress in just a few short years!

UTILIZING CURRENT TECHNOLOGY

A digital camera mounted to a multirotor drone allows the CMR construction firm to view the roof from above and to track daily progress on the project. Although tile is a traditional building material that must be installed in the traditional manner, current technology like drone imaging can improve the job by promoting communication and documenting compliance. In addition, only a drone can capture dramatic images like those to the right.

Centre for the Arts at Gladish: Buy-a-seat Campaign

Pullman is blessed to have a number of performing arts organizations but is lacking a truly professional space to perform. This new Centre gives our organizations that performance space and also opens the door for all our organizations to collaborate and grow together. It will be a place for our community to enjoy the arts and where our arts professionals can grow and thrive!

Being able to bring more events to the local community is something that Pullman has wanted for a long time. With the Centre for the Arts we will be able to provide that to the community through music, performances, plays, and many more. This in turn will allow us to provide more community minded programming and events that get our town involved and at The Gladish.

Our team is planning a full remodel of the Richard Domey Auditorium, The Little Theater, and an expansion to The View Room, to create performance spaces for concerts, theatrical productions, and more!

With the remodel of the spaces, the Gladish’s new PAC will partner with our communities arts organizations, like The Washington Idaho Symphony, Palouse Choral Society, and the Community Band of the Palouse, to create a home for our thriving arts community. This is where you, our community come in, and we have an amazing opportunity for you. We are pleased to announce our Buy-a-Seat campaign! The Buy-a-Seat allows you to have your name, or memory/honor of a loved one added to a seat.
