Diversity, Equity, & Belonging (DEB) Committee at Sunnyside Elementary
Pam Brantner, Sunnyside Elementary Principal
Sunnyside Superstars are known for their welcoming nature. Staff, students and parents alike go out of their way to make sure those around them feel a sense of belonging. At the beginning of this school year a group of teachers volunteered and formed a committee to help ensure this sense of belonging is maintained and expanded. Every member took time to consider what they thought the most important objectives of the committee were and decided on a mission statement and name. After much consideration they decided to name the group the Diversity, Equity and Belonging committee and the mission statement is to promote a welcoming environment where Superstars are valued, respected, and included. Superstars are empowered to be their authentic selves through aligned lessons and important conversations.
Members decided to spend this year focused in three main areas, the first being the creation of professional development resources for teachers regarding belonging. Research shows that when students feel a sense of belonging with their teachers and peers that they perform
better academically and socially. There are a variety of methods and strategies to build an increased sense of belonging and the Diversity Equity and Belonging committee (DEB) has worked with Sunnyside teachers to incorporate them. The second area of focus is an examination of Social Studies, Government and Civic standards, their relations between the grades and how staff can teach the standards to increase a sense of belonging in the school. The third and final focus for this year is the creation of a student showcase project. Next year every Sunnyside Superstar student will create a “culture box”, a diorama of sorts, that showcases the students’ culture, beliefs, family life and passions. Boxes will be on display for fall Family Conferences and in celebration of National Unity Day on October 20th. These areas of focus allow for committee members to maintain and expand on the welcoming nature of our Sunnyside Superstar Family.

Career and Technical Education Program Brings Real WorldSuccess to Students
Craig Nelson, Board Director District 3
Pullman School District has many programs to help students build a foundation for success in their futures. Academic subjects build skills and abilities. Athletic courses and sports promote health and fitness. Music and Arts foster creativity and performance. Career and Technical Education (CTE) is a planned program of courses and learning experiences that allow students to explore career options, gain basic academic and life skills, meet high academic standards, and participate in leadership opportunities; all offering pathways to high skill, high wage employment. CTE programs in Pullman schools include Business Application, Manufacturing, Digital Media, Family and Consumer Science, Agriscience, and more.
These classes must meet standards established by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Each course has an approved framework to support the curricula and incorporates the following three levels of leadership development.
• Individual Leadership Skills: decision making, communication, goal setting, integrity
• Group Leadership Skills: teamwork, conflict resolution, responsibility, group dynamics
• Community Leadership Skills: community service, organizational skills, advocacy
Each CTE Program area has an Advisory Committee made up of local professionals in industry to review coursework and to make recommendations for equipment upgrades to keep courses relevant to industry standards. Advisory committee members meet with teachers in each program area twice each year and approve course framework applications every 5 years.
Nine of our CTE classes offer dual credit, meaning that students can receive both high school and college credit for qualifying classes. Many programs also offer industry-recognized credentials for successful completion of courses.
Federal dollars are provided for CTE courses through The Carl Perkins act. These funds allow our CTE programs to stay current with equipment and adapt to changing workplace standards.
CTE in Pullman schools begins at Lincoln Middle School with STEM based courses. There are two instructors with CTE certification at LMS. Pullman High
The Pullman School District Board of Directors and the Pullman School District shall provide equal educational opportunity and treatment for all students in all aspects of the academic and activities programs without regard to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, honorably-discharged veteran or military status, sex, sexual orientation (including gender expression or identity), marital status, the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability, participation in the Boy Scouts of America or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. The district will provide equal access to school facilities to the Boy Scouts of America and all other designated youth groups listed in Title 36 of the United States Code as a patriotic society. District programs will be free from sexual harassment. The following employees have been designated to handle questions and complaints of alleged discrimination: Civil Rights Coordinator and Title IX Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent, (509) 332-3144, and Section 504 Coordinator, Director of Special Services, (509) 332-3144. 240 SE Dexter Street, Pullman, WA 99163 Applicants with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in the application process by contacting the Personnel Coordinator at (509) 332-3584.
School has nine CTE certified teachers. Each program has Career and Technical Student Organizations (DECA, Skills USA, FCCLA, and FFA) which hold local, regional, state and national competitions to build and test the skills of students in different areas of study.
Pullman has high quality programs in each area as evidenced by regional and state officers and award winners. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded an Emmy to Hound Central Production for Live Sporting Event/ Game. Two DECA members competed in a national competition in Anaheim CA. Several FFA members have qualified for state competitions and the horse judging team placed 3 rd in state. AP computer science has been awarded the college Board’s AP Computer Science Female Diversity award.
Teachers in the CTE departments at both Lincoln Middle School and Pullman High School work incredibly hard to build their programs to industry standards. At the heart of every successful program, teachers are using their time and talents to help students build successful futures. We can be proud of this hardworking group as they incorporate academic preparation and creativity from across the curriculum to further all students’ college and career goals.
The opinions expressed in Board Reports are those of individual school board members and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of the board as a whole or of Pullman Public Schools.

12 Pullman Community Update JUNE 2024 UNITED WAY
Big Future, Small Price Tag! Pullman Center in Profile
Tasha A. Vice, PhD, serves as the CCS Pullman Center Manager. Among her many responsibilities is managing the Running Start program at our Center. In that role, she serves students and families and our high school partners across Whitman County. We were excited by what Tasha shared about Running Start, Washington State’s flagship program that allows 11th- and 12th-grade students to take college courses with a tuition waiver at Washington's 34 community and technical colleges. Here’s what we learned: What motivates high school juniors and seniors to enroll in the Running Start Program at the Pullman Center?
High School Juniors and Seniors participating in the Running Start Program are high achieving and welcome a new challenge as well as the opportunity to get ahead in college. This opportunity provides financial savings and an advanced start to the prep work for your future career.
What challenges do newly enrolled students face in Running Start?
It is always refreshing and surprising to find out that one of our top students in college classes is not a rehearsed college student, but instead, is a brand-new running start student. The students really rise to the occasion.
Is there something you wish every Running Start student knew for the transition to college classes and life?
There are a few things that can help Running Start Students succeed. I would
include visiting your Canvas shells and checking class announcements regularly, activating and using your SFCC/Bigfoot email address so you do not miss information, and going to the first day of class and every class thereafter so you do not get removed from the roster (dropped).
Is there something special in how the Running Start program at the CCS Pullman Center serves Whitman County communities?
We have an excellent team at the SFCC Pullman office that will really work hard to help you succeed. Our office staff can assist with adds and drops, our advisor meets regularly to provide scheduling and support, and we have a completion coach to help guide you through your future career plans as well so you can be thinking about your next steps after SFCC. It really is a welcoming community here in Pullman. We also have a very active Pullman Activities Board led by the students and its President, Seth Hibpshman, who is a Running Start student. The students schedule bike rides, hikes, creative workshops, barbeques, movie and game nights, and other club events. We love to see you on campus in your student lounge or computer lab, so come on by!
What is most important to you regarding the students’ experiences and learning?
You never know what skills may be needed later, so be open to the opportunities and possibilities and focus on your growth as a person. Doing so will help you remain open to all the opportunities your college experiences in Running Start can provide. And, know we are so happy to have you here with us at the CCS Pullman Center!
& Updates
Excitement is growing at the CCS Pullman Center about our accelerating STEM effort. Currently, faculty and staff are preparing the ground for a summer remodel at the Annex that gives our Center its own science lab for the very first time. The new lab allows us to offer science courses that are resource- and equipment-intensive. We are thrilled to have faculty and students in biology, earth and environmental sciences, and physics teach and learn in a first-rate laboratory environment starting this fall. Kudos to Patrick Forster, Assistant Dean at the CCS Pullman Center, for his recognition as a Sasquatch Celebrity at Community Colleges of Spokane. Read about his passion for CCS and the Pullman Center at: bit.ly/forster_bigfoot, and chat him up on his daily bike commute on the Bill Chipman Palouse trail.

Three art exhibits close at the end of June
A trio of exhibits at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU ends June 29. This is the last chance to see them before they close. The exhibits are:
• “Beyond Hope: Kienholz and the Inland Northwest,” which showcases the collaborative artistic journey of Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. Although they are known for their politically charged artwork in postwar Los Angeles, the couple spent a significant their lives in Hope, Idaho, and their works show how artists can thrive and push boundaries outside of urban centers.
• “Subversive Intent: Selections from the Collection,” which features rarely shown pieces from the museum’s permanent collection, including works by Hogarth, Francisco Goy and Honoré Daumier.
• The “Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition,” which spotlights the culmination of work by recent graduates Mozi Jones and Reika Okuhara.
The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It’s closed for WSU breaks and holidays. Admission is free. For more info, call (509) 335-1910. On the web: museum.wsu.edu.

She has served on the Downtown Master Plan Steering Committee, Town/Gown Steering Committee Member, Downtown Association-Design Committee Member, and the Whitman County LandlordTenant Association, and on the boards of Pullman Senior Center, Pullman Kiwanis Club, and the Pullman Civic Trust.
I have been living in the Palouse for the past 5 years, and I have collected a small zoo during that time. I have 2 cats, 3 gerbils, 2 mice, and 1 whites tree frog. I am currently in school working towards becoming a veterinary technician. I have special interests in small exotics, specifically reptiles, and livestock animals. I have worked on my cousin's dairy farms, and have probably spent more time riding draft horses than I have your typical half ton horse. Although I can admit that draft horses are not the most efficient form of travel. I grew up in Ohio as well as Southern Idaho. I love my time spent with the animals. My best friend’s mom, Kelly, would enjoy much of the work I do at the shelter. I lost Kelly this year and I now step into each day thinking of her and thankful I am able to do something she would have loved.

BUSINESS MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Airway Hills Golf and Event Center is a family business conveniently located on Airport Road, just past the airport. Their goal is to create a haven for people to come and enjoy the beautiful Palouse, and have some fun!
What once was a humble farm field has become a thriving Pullman attraction. How did it all begin? The owner and PGA pro, Trent Goetze, started the business in 2005 as a small practice facility to teach golf lessons. As a natural entrepreneur, his small driving range soon became a fully stocked pro shop with club repair/fitting, a mini golf course and a par 3 golf course. But he didn't stop there. The business started hosting company outings, birthday parties, employee retreats, etc.
But, everyone knows this Palouse weather can be a little... unpredictable. The need for a larger INDOOR space eventually led to the creation of their Event Center and the addition of indoor golf simulators. Now they have the year-round ability to host groups of anywhere from 10-300 people for events and can provide a variety of activities for the whole group to enjoy. They also offer winter golf simulator leagues for those looking to keep up their skills through the colder months.
Whether you are a serious golfer who wants to improve your game, or just looking for some serious fun, there is a place for you at Airway Hills! Open Sunday, 12:30 p.m. - dark, and Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - dark.

The Food & Shelter Folks
Housing Cost Burden Contributes to Homelessness and Hunger
Definition of Housing Cost Burden: When you spend over 30% of household income on housing.
• In Whitman County, 36% of households are cost-burdened
• In Washington, 25% of households are cost-burdened
People stay in homes with unreasonable cost burdens, or face homelessness, because too few homes are affordable and available. Housing cost burden is one of the main reasons people visit food banks -or go hungry – because “the house eats first.” Rent or mortgage must be paid before other household costs.
Rising housing costs are strongly correlated with increasing levels of homelessness in national studies.
• 2023: 1 family with children in Whitman County was unsheltered
• 2024: 17 families with children in Whitman County were unsheltered “Unsheltered” includes those living in motor homes, cars, or RVs.
Primary causes of eviction include:
• Rent increases that outpace income;
• Income drops (job loss, reduction of work hours);
• Unexpected household expenses (helping a loved one pay expenses; car repair, home repair, medical crisis); and
• Domestic Violence (DV) situations and failed relationships. When people live in the same home, sometimes conflict results in the necessity of one party moving out.
Community Action Center serves individuals and families faced with eviction or those experiencing homelessness. We offer emergency housing solutions, permanent affordable housing options, and Section 8 housing choice vouchers. We also advocate for more affordable housing in Whitman County.
