Students of the Month Rhys Gotch Rhys Gotch, child of Jaclyn and Chad Gotch, is a very active member of the PHS drama club. They have participated in every production for the last four years, with work ranging from lighting design, to stage management, to acting! In addition to theatre, they are a member of the PHS Blue Orchestra and have been in school orchestras for a total of nine years. Rhys started on the cello in 4th grade but quickly made the switch to upright bass as soon as they were allowed to. Furthermore, they have taken five years of French, and will receive a Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma.

Outside of school, Rhys enjoys art, music, theater and reading. They have a lofty goal of reading every play Shakespeare ever wrote…eventually. (There’s only 35 of them, how hard could it possibly be?) Most of Rhys’s favorite memories come from their theatre experiences, having met some of their best friends through productions.

Next year, Rhys plans to attend Central Washington University to study Theatrical Production, with a minor in English.

Justin Tang Justin Tang, son of Zhongwei Tang and Xin Wang, has excelled both in and outside the classroom. He demonstrates academic excellence by maintaining a 4.0 GPA while taking some of the most rigorous courses offered. At Washington State University, he is actively involved in soft robotics research, contributing to the development of models and machine learning systems that predict and control robot movement and behavior.

Beyond his academics, Justin engages in a wide range of activities. He is a dedicated athlete on the PHS swim team, qualifying for state for two consecutive years, and volunteers in middle school computer science classes, where he enjoys the opportunity to help younger students explore coding and technology. He is also involved in Key Club, Knowledge Bowl and DECA. After graduation, Justin plans to pursue a degree in computer or electrical engineering.

Pullman has a long tradition of neighbors caring for neighbors, and we see that spirit reflected every day in the generosity you’ve shown to our program. Whether you have donated, volunteered, participated in our tennis & pickleball tournament, or simply shared words of encouragement, your support makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

For those unfamiliar with Circles of Caring, we are an adult day health program supporting individuals living with memory loss, mental health challenges, and other health conditions, while also providing vital respite to family caregivers. Each day, we offer a safe, welcoming space filled with companionship, purposeful activities, and compassionate care.

Because of this community’s support, participants receive social connection and a sense of belonging.

Caregivers gain peace of mind and the opportunity to work, rest, or take care of life’s daily needs, knowing their loved one is in good hands.

rooklyn Brown is an Employee Development Specialist and HR Generalist II at METER Group in Pullman. In her role, she oversees employee professional, career, and personal development initiatives, manages company training programs, and partners with leaders to strengthen culture, engagement, and compliance.

Brooklyn has a background in higher education and student success from her previous role as a Completion Coach and International Student Advisor at Spokane Falls Community College, where she supported student achievement and community outreach. She is passionate about fostering growth and creating environments where people can thrive.

What comes to your mind regarding the 25th anniversary of our Center's services on the Palouse?

Wow, 25 years already? Thinking about this makes me reflect on the years of commitment from staff, faculty, and community partners who have helped create opportunities for local students and contributed to the educational and workforce development on the Palouse. It has been interesting to see how much this center has changed throughout the years.

What are your connections to the community college?

My first connection with SFCC Pullman was as a student in 2005 back when it was the Institute for Extended Learning, and again in 2008 as an employee. In 13 years, I held several positions where I assisted countless students with admissions, registration, immigration advising, and provided resources.

As a Completion Coach, I helped

students stay on the path of degree completion.

What do you value about the community college?

For me as a student, I valued the small class size and the location of the campus inside the Gladish Community & Cultural Center. I also value the people that I met, both as a student and later as an employee.

Most of my current friendships developed from my time at SFCC Pullman. I appreciate how such a small place can have a significant impact on people's lives. I value the accessibility that a community college provides, the supportive environment it creates, and the way it helps students build confidence, direction, and connection. I also appreciate how community colleges meet people where they are, offer multiple paths forward, and contribute to the strength and resilience of the communities they serve.

Why do you think it's important to have a community college presence in Pullman?

I think the presence of a community college in Pullman is important because it provides an affordable education to people at all stages of life, whether they are just starting college, returning after some time off, or exploring a new career path. Not everyone can or wants to begin at a four-year university, and SFCC Pullman offers the opportunity for students to build confidence and a strong academic foundation. Also, the staff and faculty are amazing!

What do you hope the Pullman Center will look like in 5 to 10 years?

While I worked on partnerships with WSU for SFCC students to gain access to university resources, I would like to see the future of the Pullman Center in a space more accessible to the community. I would love to see the Pullman Center in a larger building with enough space for each student to feel a sense of belonging.

Pullman School District Staff Professional Learning Focuses on Culturally Responsive Teaching and Student Engagement Ryan Mulvey, Assistant Superintendent On October 10, all certificated staff across Pullman Public Schools participated in a full day of professional learning focused on creating stronger, safer, and more culturally responsive learning environments for every student we serve. The training, Culturally Responsive Classroom Management: Courageous Conversations to Address Social & Cultural Conflicts, was led by Ben Ibale from the Washington Education Association’s Human and Civil Rights Division. His work centers on building equitable school cultures where every student is seen, heard, and valued.

Throughout the day, staff engaged deeply with the core components of Culturally Responsive Teaching, which Ben defines as both the will and the skill to build authentic and effective relationships across differences.

Educators explored practices grounded in four key elements: • Awareness – “See me.” Recognizing our own assumptions, biases, and perspectives.

• Knowledge – “Hear me.” Understanding the lived experiences, worldviews, and identities of students and families.

• Skills – “Know me.” Developing relationship-based strategies that work across cultural differences.

• Advocacy – “Champion me.” Ensuring every student experiences belonging, dignity, and equitable opportunities.

A significant focus of the day was understanding Hope and Resiliency—the idea that students thrive when adults intentionally build meaningful connections rather than relying on default relationships shaped by unconscious preferences. Staff also examined the importance of Relational Equity within five key relationship types: educator-tostudent, educator-to-whole class, student-to-student, educator-to-family, and educator-to-educator.

Ben guided staff through the district’s continued work with Courageous Conversations, a protocol designed to help educators address social and cultural conflicts, identity-based slurs, and harmful language in ways that center student safety and healing. These agreements—stay engaged,

speak your truth, experience discomfort, accept non-closure, be open to possibilities, and focus on impact over intent—serve as a framework for navigating difficult moments with compassion and clarity.

Educators also explored the power of asset-based storytelling, shifting from narratives of deficit to narratives that highlight student strengths, resilience, and the opportunities present in every classroom community.

This reframing helps build a culture where all students feel respected and where differences are embraced as assets, not barriers.

Finally, staff learned strategies for responding to real-time social and cultural conflicts in the classroom, including how to support students who are harmed, address students who cause harm, and reinforce the classroom values that guide our shared community expectations.

We are proud of the deep learning our staff engaged in and their commitment to creating inclusive, supportive environments for all Pullman students. This work is ongoing, and we appreciate the partnership of families and our broader community as we continue to grow together.

Reem Nasralla named 2025 “Excellence in Education” Recipient Reem Nasralla, who serves as a Special Education Paraeducator at Sunnyside Elementary School, has been named the recipient of the “Excellence in Education” honor from our school board! Each year, the board selects one classified employee to receive this recognition.

Reem was recommended for this recognition by Sunnyside Elementary Principal, Pam Brantner, who was so inspired by Reem’s consistent modeling of the district’s core values through her loyalty, professionalism, and commitment to student growth and well-being.

Reem has served the Pullman School District for 10 years! Principal Brantner shared, “[Reem’s] inclusive, compassionate approach with students, colleagues, and families fosters a supportive school environment where everyone feels valued. She leads by example— treating each individual with dignity and kindness, regardless of the situation or challenge. Main Street Community Designation Brings New Opportunities to Pullman PULLMAN — Downtown Pullman is gaining momentum after earning the prestigious Main Street Community designation in June 2025, a recognition that connects the city to a nationwide network focused on downtown revitalization and historic preservation.

Through this designation, the Downtown Pullman Association (DPA) joins hundreds of Main Street communities across the country that share data, strategies, and best practices for activating downtowns.

The network provides tools and insights related to events, promotions, design, economic data, and community engagement—resources that help strengthen local economies.

“In uncertain times, one thing is clear: economic development is not a solo sport,” DPA representatives say. Participation in the Main Street program allows Pullman to collaborate with other communities while advocating for downtown revitalization at both the local and state levels.

One of the most tangible benefits of the designation is access to

Washington State’s Main Street Tax Incentive Program. The program allows businesses to redirect a portion of their Business & Occupation (B&O) tax dollars back into their own community rather than sending those funds solely to Olympia.

For every $100 contributed to the Downtown Pullman Association, participating businesses receive a $75 tax credit on their B&O taxes the following year. Those contributions directly support downtown projects, events, and initiatives aimed at keeping Pullman’s city center vibrant and economically strong.

The 2026 B&O Tax Incentive Program will reopen for pledging on January 12 through the Washington State Department of Revenue website. The non-competitive first quarter runs through March 31.

The Food & Shelter Folks Dear Community Member, I’m writing to you today to ask you to send in a special year-end gift to help make sure no one goes hungry in Whitman County!

Let me share about Lori and her family. Lori works hard each week—and her budget seems okay on paper. But there isn’t always enough money for good food. After childcare, doctor bills, and her car expenses, sometimes food is hard to afford. And good food from the grocery store is just plain out of reach. She plans out her regular bills and is on time with rent—but Lori’s food money is sometimes short.

To help feed herself and her family, Lori sometimes visits the Community Food Bank. Set up like a grocery store, Lori “shops” for the food her family needs and wants. The Food Bank buys, grows, or receives fresh, wholesome choices for the menu, with the ability to get Lori what she needs, only costing the Food Bank about $50 each week.

That’s why I am asking for your donation of $50…so Lori and her kids can get enough food for a week.

There are hundreds of families like Lori’s in our area, with more than 1,500 visits to the Community Food Bank every month. That takes a lot of food—and the hard work of Community Food Staff and volunteers to keep the shelves stocked.

The demand continues to grow—visits to the food bank have more than doubled since 2021! And food donations from large food bank suppliers have decreased over 80%. That means your help is crucial.

Chris Dickey will perform the world premiere of Joy Zickau’s Abiaka: Suite for Tuba and Piano, the result of a nationwide consortium Dickey led last spring, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Bryan Hall Theatre. Other composers highlighted on the program are Larry Whatley, James Naigus, Mica Redden, and Jonathan Oliver. Additional faculty members appearing on this Faculty Artist Series recital include Yoon-Wha Roh, Fabio Menchetti, Sarah Miller, A.J. Miller, and Aaron Wacker.

Join Rochelle Smith for a quilter’s perspective on select works in the current exhibitions at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15. Rochelle will discuss Color Outside the Lines from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, which showcases textile works using quilting and appliqué techniques by artists Faith Ringgold and Christopher Myers.
