December Seniors of the Month Jasmine Thapa Jasmine Thapa, daughter of Goma and Bhim Thapa, is a dedicated student and leader in her community. She serves as the President of her Senior Class, President of the Youth in STEM Club, and Treasurer of the AAPI (Asian-American and Pacific Islander) Club.

She is also a Varsity Tennis athlete who has received Academic AllConference Honors. Further, Jasmine is actively involved in the community. As a Key Club Lieutenant Governor in her Junior year, she organized volunteer opportunities and community- wide drives for St. Mary's Parish Food Bank, ATVP (Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse), and the Community Action Center. Additionally, she has a big passion for STEM. She enjoys competing in the Disease Detectives competition of the Science Olympiad. This past Summer, she worked at the Vogel Plant Biosciences Building on Campus, where she conducted plant sample DNA isolation in a lab. Jasmine plans to attend a four-year college and study Public Health.

Parker Williams Parker Williams, son of Tim and Gina Williams, is a senior at PHS. He has been involved in Jazz and Concert Band and Advanced Ensemble throughout the past four years. He’s also been a teacher's assistant for the past two years. Last year, he was accepted into the WMEA All-State Choir. Parker has participated in numerous productions, including 'Newsies' and 'Puffs' He was recently in the Regional Theatre of the Palouse's show 'White Christmas' and several other shows in the past. Parker is very active in his church, Emmanuel Baptist Church. He has been a Bible study leader and Vacation Bible School leader, as well as being part of service projects, such as building porches for community members, food drives, and community service projects. Parker loves to sing, play guitar, and hang out with his family and friends. After graduation, Parker plans to attend college with an emphasis on theater and/or music and movie production.

Santa Butch is coming to campus

The Lewis Alumni Centre's annual holiday celebration features refreshments, activities and the opportunity to have pictures taken with Santa Butch. It's free and open to the public.

The operations team has been busy this month getting things tidied up around Gladish! We are fixing our directory board to more accurately show what organizations are located on each floor. We also spruced up the halls on the third floor adding some accent lines and some fun floral finishes on the sides of doorways! Next time you are here be sure to keep your eye out as we are adding more to the building!

Lastly, as winter approaches, we face a critical situation – our boiler system urgently needs repair. Without swift action, the comfort and functionality of Gladish Community Center, a hub for support and education, are at risk. We must unite to raise $40,000 to fix the boiler, ensuring a warm and welcoming space for all.

2024 marks the 16th annual Furball, our biggest fundraising event at WCHS each year. Furball 2024 will start with Yappy Hour where you can enjoy a drink & conversation while pursuing a huge selection of silent auction items followed by dinner service with celebrity guests just before the competitive live auction kicks off.

With over 600 animals passing through our doors each year we've outgrown our space. It's time to expand with a new building so, the majority of this year's Furball proceeds will go towards planning and funding our new building project.

DECEMBER 12-31, 2023 Avenues for Hope is a statewide (Idaho) annual campaign. Nonprofits and school districts that provide housing and/or supportive services to low-income or homeless Idahoans participate in the annual campaign. We provide emergency shelter with extensive case management to families experiencing homelessness. We can house up to four families for at least 90 days in our rotational shelter.

All shelter graduates are offered continued case management, guidance and incentives to help maintain their success and stability.

Home Start We collect new or gently used housing items from the community and use them to provide anyone with the items they need to set up their new homes.

Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Garrett Luettgen Named 2023 Physician Excellence Award winner!

Dr. Garrett Luettgen has worked at Pullman Regional Hospital for two years as an Emergency Medicine Physician in the Emergency Department. He is a member of Pullman Regional’s Emergency Medicine Committee, Trauma Committee and the Reliability Management Team. He was nominated by four of his colleagues for the annual honor of Physician Excellence and was selected from a pool of eight nominees.

Colleagues of Dr. Luettgen described him as “approachable, hardworking, and respectful,” “competent, organized, and logical,” and “makes an extra effort to ensure all staff are informed of the care plans.”

Additional comments on his nomination form spoke to his ability to evaluate input from the nursing staff, lighten the mood with well-timed ‘dad jokes’ and provide thorough follow-up communication for patients and families. All four nominators noted that they look forward to working with Dr. Luettgen during Emergency Department shifts.

Additional comments read, “His friendly personality brings the team together and makes everyone want to do their best.

Not only does he give clear orders, but he is always happy and willing to explain his rationale.”

About the Physician Excellence Award The Physician Excellence Award was developed in 2003 to acknowledge outstanding physicians at Pullman Regional Hospital and network of clinics. This annual award recognizes those doctors who exhibit a commitment to improving the quality of healthcare in our community.

What you're doing now?

We are excited about a new service agreement between CCS and WSU, which gives SFCC Pullman students in need access to the excellent food pantry managed by WSU’s Center for Civic Engagement. We are deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of our WSU colleagues, who made this agreement possible.

I currently am a pre-service teacher in WSU’s College of Education and look forward to completing my teaching certificate in secondary education soon.

Did you have any impactful experiences at SFCC? SFCC provided a strong sense of community. I found valuable friendships and resources throughout my time there.

My experience at SFCC was pivotal in my personal and educational growth, leading me to discover my passion for English Education. Dr. Alissa Bourbonnais was one of the individuals who significantly influenced my journey. Her teaching strategies have shaped my understanding of what it means to be an equitable and effective teacher. I am committed to these strategies as I continue to develop as an educator.

What do you love about teaching?

Building community and equity for my students. Coming into students’ lives as a stranger who oversees their education isn’t an easy venture. But creating a safe space of comfort and inclusivity, with rigor, helps foster both community and equity within the four walls my students and I share. As we build community, we build relationships and trust. A sense of safety and inclusion allows for a proper learning environment. My approach to teaching emphasizes patience, understanding, and personalized attention, ensuring a positive, respectful, and enjoyable

learning environment and space while building rapport with my students.

Do you have advice for anyone considering attending community college?

I strongly advocate for attending a community college. Community colleges offer great opportunities for students to explore their educational paths at a manageable pace. The smaller, more intimate setting allows for deeper interactions with instructors and fosters a strong sense of community. These experiences are invaluable for developing effective learning strategies and time management skills, which benefit students as they transition to a four-year university, as I did, should they choose to.

We are thankful for the expertise and enthusiasm of Ana Maria Kodama and Geri Winters, academic advising colleagues at WSU. They joined our fall quarter SFCC2WSU transfer admission event for SFCC students hosted by Pullman Center advisor Dr. Mateja Lončar on November 8. Ana Maria and Geri made the journey to WSU clear and exciting for our students.

Congratulations to Dr. Intissar Yahia, who received a Professional Development Grant Award from the Washington Association for the Education of Speakers of Other Languages (WAESOL) and presented “ESL Classes Promote Solidarity With Ukrainian Refugees” at WAESOL’s annual conference in October. Dr. Yahia serves as the faculty for ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction at our Pullman Center and English Writing with WSU’s Global Campus.

Washington Idaho Symphony “Messiah” Tickets available now!

The Washington Idaho Symphony (WIS) is back at Pullman High School for “Messiah” on Saturday and Sunday, December 9th and 10th!

We are excited to not only offer two performances of this holiday classic - we are elated to be able to bring these performances in partnership with the Palouse Choral Society!

The Messiah was written over the span of 24 days in August and September of 1741. Handel signed the manuscript with the letters SDG for soli deo gloria, or “To God alone the glory.” This inscription led to the apocryphal story that Handel wrote the piece in a burst of divine inspiration. However, this pace of composition was not unusual in his operas or oratorios. Handel was an experienced composer at this point in his career, and he knew exactly what he was doing and how to do it quickly.

Handel went to Dublin in the fall of 1741 at the invitation of the Duke of Devonshire, the serving Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Handel organized a subscription series of his previous music as he prepared for the premiere of The Messiah. Handel engaged choirs from the largest churches in Dublin and hired his orchestra. The proceeds of the premiere would go to fund several hospitals in the city.

The expected audience was so large that it was requested that men not wear their swords and ladies not wear hoop skirts to create more space for the audience. The premiere was a smashing success, and Handel gave the work’s first performance in London soon after. The work has been continuously performed since its premiere in 1742, making it potentially the oldest piece of Western music to have been continuously performed since its premiere.
