RECOGNITION

QUARTERLY BRIGHT STAR AWARDS DEPUTY AFRAM BASSOUS, LAW ENFORCEMENT On August 28, 2021 while monitoring activity at a local establishment due to ongoing illegal activity, Deputy Bassous heard several gunshots in an area of the parking lot. Deputy Bassous immediately notified the communications center and proceeded to the scene where he found a victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He immediately began performing life-saving measures as other deputies arrived to secure the scene. Thanks to Deputy Bassous’ quick actions and how quickly other deputies were able to secure the scene, the victim was saved.

DEPUTY MICHAEL KNOX, DETENTION Deputy Knox received the Bright Star Award for his positive attitude and his willingness to go above and beyond to work various extra assignments to support his shift. Identified as having exceptional interpersonal skills, Deputy Knox’s “can do” attitude has allowed him to interact positively with inmates and defuse sometimes volatile situations. Deputy Knox also consistently seeks feedback from supervision and takes great pride in his work.

SAMANTHA MCCANN, SUPPORT CPI McCann was recognized for her efforts to investigate an alleged child abuse on an autistic child starting on July 15, 2021. CPI McCann initially received a report from the school system about a student that did not appear to be adequately cared for. Throughout the course of her investigation, she identified concerns related to numerous, unexplained injuries which turned her attention to the group home at which they resided. The investigation uncovered significant concerns about the operation of the home that were not previously identified. Due to CPI McCann’s thorough investigation, an arrest was made for aggravated child abuse and multiple children were removed from the group home and another affiliated home.

HUMAN RESOURCES

New Member Gateway and Admin Portal The new Member Gateway and Admin Portal went live on September 26th, 2021. Members and their supervisors have been using the self-service system to review and update personal and payroll information, request and approve leave, submit HR forms, and much more.

DID YOU KNOW?

There is now a “Work Details” tile under the “Personal Details” tab where you can edit and update your office phone number and radio call signs.

As with any new system, there is the potential for glitches and we appreciate everyone’s patience while we work through them to improve the system. HR, Payroll, and IT continue to work on enhancements, specifically an integration with the new benefits system, making Member Gateway the future one-stop shop for all your needs.

All members have access to their own Continuous Feedback and Performance Evaluations through the entire rating period.

This is a great tool to assist supervisors in evaluating potential member transfers, promotions, etc. While in the past supervisors had to request this information from HR, they are now able access this information on their own. We hope the system continues to meet your needs and you find it user-friendly. Should you experience any difficulties e-mail: HRISHelp@pcsonet.com – for HR related issues payroll@pcsonet.com – for Payroll related issues

Organizational Charts for all agency workgroups can be viewed by clicking on the “My Organization” drop down in Member Gateway.

SUPERVISOR TIP All supervisors now have access to view Continuous Feedback, Performance Evaluations, Career Counseling, and Performance Development Plans of ALL members within the agency through the Admin Portal.

We’re here to help lessen the learning curve and keep you in the know. So, if there’s a specific topic you’d like to see featured in a future edition of News & Views, submit your suggestions to proud@pcsonet.com.

SPOTLIGHT PUBLIC RELATIONS BUREAU

Turning Ideas Into Reality:

The Agency’s In-House Multimedia Production Team Housed under the Public Relations Bureau (PRB), the Communications and Public Education section (CPE) is responsible for public education programs, like the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, agency graphics, photography, videography, social media, internal and external publications, like News & Views and Inside the Star, and much more! Out of CPE’s many “wheelhouses,” one of the busiest ones is that of Graphics & Multimedia Specialists, Aaron Grudis, Ryan Gordon, and Audio & Visual Multimedia Specialist, Brennan Whipple. had before. “The variety of projects and switching back and forth between who the intended audience is for each project makes working at PCSO unique. I’ve worked on paint schemes for an airplane, designed a challenge coin, and designed the agency annual report all within the same week.” One of the major projects this year was the agency calendar featuring our four-legged deputies. From the planning stage to the moment the calendars were delivered to the SAB, the process took five months. The calendar was designed by Grudis, with photos captured by Gordon. No one enjoyed working on this year’s calendar more than Gordon. “Being a Pinellas native, I enjoyed venturing throughout the county to find those spots, and working with the Canine Unit is always great, but like many projects it came with its own set of challenges.” Another large project that was taken on by the Multimedia Specialists was the 2020 Annual Report, a project that Grudis found to be the most personally rewarding. “Soon after being hired in January 2021, I began the preliminary design on the Annual Report. Being exposed to so much information pertaining to the agency straight out the gate helped lessen the learning the curve, and being able to kick-off my career with a From brochures to challenge coins and printed and more than 100 videos that were type of project that I enjoy was also fun.” the graphics you see on SONET, chances posted on our social media platforms. are before it hit your screen or your inbox, Currently, a majority of the graphic projects it crossed the desks of the Multimedia For Grudis, with 24 years of graphic design that require printing, are all done in-house, Specialists. In 2021 alone, the team produced experience under his belt, working at which up until late 2019 was not the case. graphics for nearly 75,000 items that were PCSO has been unlike any other job he’s Up until that point, a majority of projects

were designed in-house, but were printed by the Pinellas County Clerk of the Court. One of the few projects that still gets outsourced is the agency calendar. So, in addition to design related projects, Grudis and Gordon are also the agency’s in-house printing professionals. In 2020, Whipple joined the CPE team as the agency’s first in-house videographer. Before Whipple joined the agency, all video related content had been filmed with an iPad or by a third party production company. Today, Whipple is responsible for video projects like the Weekly 150, Partners in Crime, PSA’s, training videos, event recaps, and more. Being the agency’s only videographer and editor has been his most rewarding job. “I’m very fortunate to be given the opportunity to shoot footage out of a helicopter or alongside other units while they’re actively

working - that’s something that many in my profession may never get to experience. It’s also fulfilling being able to work with agency members to share their stories and the impact they have on the community.” Telling a story, especially on camera, can be difficult, but for Whipple it’s just part of the job. “Convincing members to get on camera isn’t always easy. Speaking to a camera isn’t something that comes naturally to most, and I definitely empathize with them. So, whenever I shoot with members, I try my best to put them at ease because at the end of the day, it’s part of my job to make our members look good.” Overseeing the multimedia specialists is a demanding role, but for Ricky Butler, manager of CPE, that’s just part of the fun. “The entire agency is our clientele. Keeping up with the expectation for each

project, while still honoring the request of the client and ensuring the final product meets the agency’s high standards is part of the balancing act we do, but it’s what makes our job so fun because each project takes on a “personality” of its own.” Butler also added, “While our deputies, whether on the streets or in the jail, are on the frontlines operationally, in CPE and all of PR, we’re holding the line with the public and the community we serve to ensure the agency is depicted in a positive light.” Helping lead the way to the next agency graphic or video, the Multimedia Specialists are here for you. Whether your project is as small as laminating to as large as a training manual or video, if you have a project that you’d like our Multimedia Specialists to be involved with, e-mail Ricky Butler at rbutler@pcsonet.com.

QUICK HITS

“EXCELLENCE”

is a term thrown around when hard work translates into achievement. But that’s not actually how it works. Excellence is not a metric of achievement, it’s a metric of commitment. Just because you’re successful doesn’t mean you’re committed, and it doesn’t automatically equal excellence.

INGREDIENTS Olive oil cooking spray | 4 chicken breasts or thighs, boneless and skinless 1/3 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed | 1/4 cup honey | 1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon garlic, finely chopped | 2 tablespoons parsley, fresh chopped, divided Salt, to season and to taste | ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper, to taste 4 bunches asparagus (37-40 spears), woody ends removed | 1 lemon, sliced to garnish

That’s because excellence isn’t about how hard you’re workingit’s about how hard you are working relative to the best in the world. Are you doing everything in your power to get half a percent better, no matter how difficult it is or how long it takes? If your level of commitment makes people uncomfortable, you’re on the right track. YOU’LL KNOW YOU’RE CLOSE WHEN THEY START CALLING YOU OBSESSED.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 200°C | 400°F and place oven shelf in the middle of the oven. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking oil spray. Arrange chicken in a single layer on the sheet and season with salt; set aside. 2. Combine together lemon juice, honey, soy sauce, garlic, half of the parsley, salt, and pepper. Pour three quarters of the honey lemon mixture over the chicken. Arrange the lemon slices over the top. Season with extra salt and pepper, if desired. 3. Cover the baking sheet with foil and bake for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Uncover and arrange the asparagus around the chicken. Pour the remaining honey lemon mixture over the asparagus and season with salt and pepper to taste. Return to the oven to grill or broil until the chicken is golden and the asparagus is cooked. Garnish with the remaining parsley. TIP: IF YOU DON’T LIKE ASPARAGUS, YOU CAN REPLACE THE SPEARS WITH GREEN BEANS, BROCCOLI, ZUCCHINI, OR CAULIFLOWER

WORKOUT TIP ENSURE YOU DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER EXERCISE, PARTICULARLY IF YOU ARE EXERCISING IN WARM CONDITIONS OR FOR LONG PERIODS. DEHYDRATION WILL RESULT IN A DROP IN PERFORMANCE AND SEVERE DEHYDRATION CAN BE DANGEROUS TOO.

4. Serve with a side of rice or potatoes and use the remaining honey lemon mixture on the baking sheet to drizzle over your chosen side dish.

OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2021 | PAGE 11

On October 28th, 1970, Marine One touched down at St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport with President Richard Nixon onboard. The president was in town to join Florida Governor Claude Kirk at a campaign rally at the Bayfront Center in downtown St. Petersburg. The Pinellas County visit, the first of its kind for a sitting president, had drawn a lot of fanfare – schools were closed and more than 12,000 free tickets were distributed. The president’s motorcade was supported by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and the St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD). During the return trip to the airport, an SPPD Harley-Davidson, ridden by Officer Don Leadbeater, collided with a flatbed truck as it pulled off of a side street into its path. Moments after the accident occurred, this “moment in time” was captured. Believe it or not, this photo was discovered years ago by former PCSO sergeant and then current Secret Service Agent, Rob Holloway on the wall of the U.S. Secret Service headquarters in Washington D.C. Since then, almost everyone in the photo has been identified. The men in sunglasses are all Secret Service Agents. The man in the suit standing second from the right is Governor Claude Kirk. The helmeted officers tending to Officer Leadbeater (out of sight) from left to right are Deputy Bill Bolls (PCSO), Officer Bob Goodrich (SPPD), and Deputy G.Z. Smith (PCSO). Based on interviews with deputies Goodrich and Smith, they felt a presence behind them and looked up to see President Nixon (center) over their shoulders to check on the wounded officer. As the story goes, President Nixon insisted on stopping the motorcade to check on Officer Leadbeater and even called Bayfront Hospital after he returned to Washington to check on his condition. Unfortunately, Officer Leadbeater never fully recovered from his injuries and retired about a year after the accident. Everyone involved, especially deputies Goodrich and Smith, will never forget this incident. Deputy Smith received a poster-sized photo that is displayed in his home marking this extraordinary moment in time.
