REFLECTING BACK,
LOOKING FORWARD. My name is Brandon Hawkins. I graduated from Perspectives High School of Technology in 2021. Graduating from the class of 2021 from Perspectives was a celebration of resilience. My classmates and I lived through a wild last two years of high school – isolation, bouts of fear, anxiety, sadness and frustration. I am so proud of my classmates who coped with a dangerous world, followed the rules, and learned how to solve math problems all over Zoom. Today, I am grateful for simple things like the return of sports, walking in nature, family dinners, and the chance to see friends and relatives safely again. My classmates and I were able to make it through to this better point in time because we stayed hopeful and resilient – undoubtedly, thanks to the 26 Principles of A Disciplined Life® (ADL). Last year, the 26 Principles of A Disciplined Life were there to guide me, and as a result, the transition from high school to college has been very smooth for me. I’m grateful for Perspectives instilling those 26 Principles in me: they taught me to build great relationships and provided me with excellent tips and tools on how to keep myself grounded and a way of remaining productive – even during times of stress and change. Perspectives and its ADL curriculum teach resilience. I always tell people that Perspectives is a big part of the person I am today because of my experiences there, and I’m so grateful for the impact that everyone from Perspectives had on my life. Not only are the 26 Principles incredibly useful to lean on during hard times, they’re also tools that our communities need. Schools need to teach curriculum like ADL everywhere, and especially in black and brown communities – a lot of the time, the inequality, violence, and socioeconomic disparities that our communities face can drown out social-emotional skills because people aren’t learning those tools in their everyday lives. Coming to school every day at Perspectives and being reminded daily of the 26 Principles is a great way to keep us moving higher – and that’s where we’re going. Not even a pandemic could stop us from rising, thanks to A Disciplined Life. I am eternally grateful to my Perspectives family for giving me a unique high school experience – for making me feel like I was truly part of that big family, and for keeping me engaged and checking on me when I might have started to check out, because that’s what family is all about. When things are hard, remember those 26 Principles – and stay hopeful and resilient for me.

DEAR PERSPECTIVES FAMILY, We’re pleased to share this year’s Annual Report with you. The report highlights the impact our A Disciplined Life® education model has had on our over 1,600 Chicago students in 5 schools for the 2020-21 school year. We’re humbled at the way you have rallied behind Perspectives yet again. This year presented many new challenges and has been built on hope and resilience. In 2021, we continued to struggle with gun violence and civic discord while working to make a future for our students that is better, safer, and more promising. Perspectives’ 26 Principles of A Disciplined Life prepared us to tackle these challenges. Students excelled academically, despite facing these challenges and transitioning back into the classroom. We created a hybrid model of learning, which enabled us to adapt frequent changes in COVID guidance and get our students back into classrooms safely and productively. Not only did Perspectives students shine academically, the entire Perspectives family also united to address the needs of our community in the evolving “post-pandemic” world. We worked for social justice, community service, and with integrity and compassion. We distributed meals to over 241,000 Chicagoans under the age of 18. We initiated MSA CARES, a series of projects led by Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy campus staff that sought to cultivate goodness and address ongoing isolation and social issues in our community.
We are extraordinarily grateful to our supporters, partners, and champions. You have empowered us to do this work. Your steadfast commitment enabled our students to thrive in yet another pandemic year. Your generous support has created opportunities for our students, staff, and community to learn, grow, and succeed. As we continue this important work, we’re so thankful that you are here with us. EQUITY IN EDUCATION
When COVID-19 forced schools to close in March of 2020, the challenges for students of under-resourced communities were amplified, as families lacked the technology required for their children to get online and participate in e-learning. Many struggled to remain connected, had to share devices with siblings, or simply didn’t have stable, reliable internet access. But thanks to the generous support of our corporate partners, our students were able to quickly convert to online learning – and that quick adaptation proved to be incredibly successful for the 2020-2021 school year.

The resiliency of our students and staff has been incredible over the last year, and we are so grateful for our partners and their deep, meaningful relationships with our network. Horizon Therapeutics, in particular, used this opportunity to engage their staff and call on them to help - and they were able to fund the cost of new laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots for all 526 IIT/Math & Science Academy students. Additionally, Citi, EY, PwC, and Lundbeck made significant investments in technology to help narrow the Digital Divide.

OUR COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy Kicked Off “MSA CARES,” A Community Partnership Project Perspectives staff, students, and board members are proud members of the community. Our campuses are in a thriving city with incredible people. We spent the 2020-2021 school year partnering with our neighbors to provide students a network of support and encouragement outside of the classroom.
In addition to our community events, Perspectives Pathways is a key initiative of MSA CARES. It offers professional certification options to all MSA students. Certification completion demonstrates hard work, perseverance and achievement – all traits that are sought out by our great colleges. Certifications also provide students opportunities to work in career-building positions after graduation and/or immediately pursue a career in healthcare or technology. The certifications include Cisco Network Systems Analyst and Microsoft Office in the technology field, as well as Pharmacy Tech and Patient Care Technician in the healthcare field.
As part of our ongoing commitment to our community, Perspectives students and staff continued to innovate new ways to give back to their neighbors. We’re so excited that the Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy kicked off their MSA CARES initiative this past spring. MSA CARES is an effort by MSA staff to give back to the community, empower residents, and engage with our neighbors. In May, MSA staff conducted its first community event as part of the MSA CARES initiative. Staff delivered 70 handmade bouquets to all of the mothers residing at Meds Senior Living in honor of Mother’s Day and later cleaned up the streets on King Drive between 35th and 47th. These acts of service and kindness are fundamentally part of our philosophy towards the Perspectives family and the community that we’ve been growing in for over twenty years. In addition, MSA hosted a Juneteenth celebration with State Representative Lamont Robinson, State Senator Mattie Hunter, and Alderman Pat Dowell. The event kicked off a voter registration drive and provided food and attractions for the Bronzeville community. Lastly, over the summer, MSA hosted an Outdoor Movie Night for our students, families, and neighbors to enjoy. Our Outdoor Movie Night featured a showing of A Wrinkle In Time that provided an opportunity
for students and their loved ones of all abilities and comfort levels to come out and celebrate a lovely summer night together. We look forward to continuing to provide outstanding learning opportunities for our students and to give back to our neighborhoods.
RESILIENT. HOPEFUL. GRATEFUL. OUR FIRST VIRTUAL GALA! Our annual A Disciplined Life® Gala celebrates how far Perspectives has come and raises critical money for our programs and students. It also showcases our network’s steadfast commitment to social justice, a concept that we cultivate through our A Disciplined Life curriculum, community programs, and day-today interactions. This event is a celebration of our community and the incredible story of Perspectives growing from a oneclassroom operation to a network of multiple schools serving students on the south and west sides of Chicago - all without sacrificing our values and strong dedication to creating a just world for our students, alumni, and families. Because of the pandemic, this year’s A Disciplined Life Gala was hosted virtually on May 6th - but the virtual environment didn’t stop us from honoring our supporters and students while fundraising for our future. In fact, we became even more dedicated to giving back to our community and addressing the socio-economic hurdles that have been thrown at our family by the pandemic.
This year, the gala especially honored our friend and exceptional Perspectives supporter Holly Copeland, the Senior Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Horizon Therapeutics. She received the A Disciplined Life Award, a tribute given to leaders who display an outstanding commitment to ethical leadership, service, and compassion. Holly and the Horizon team are incredible supporters of Perspectives and Holly’s dedication to our students and mission is absolutely inspiring. We were ecstatic to be able to honor her for all of her work and we’re lucky to have her in the Perspectives family. We also want to recognize our co-chairs, Governor Pat Quinn, Tim Walbert and Nancy Sullivan for their support and work on behalf of our students. The virtual setting of the pandemic provided a unique opportunity for supporters who strongly and boldly advocate for social-emotional learning and social justice to join us, and we’re incredibly grateful to our Co-Chairs for making the time to spend the evening with us.

HORIZON THERAPEUTICS AWARDS $100,000 SCHOLARSHIP TO GRADUATING SENIOR, ADRIANNA EMERY
Through Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy’s (MSA) partnership with Horizon Therapeutics, MSA’s class of 2021 Senior, Adrianna Emery, was awarded a $100,000 scholarship that will be disbursed over the next four years. The scholarship was created by Horizon in order to enable talented young women and men of color in the Chicagoland region to obtain a degree of their choice at Howard University. Adrianna graduated from MSA this past Spring with honors. Thanks to additional funding provided by Horizon, Adrianna also participated in MSA’s first ever certified Pharmacy Technician cohort. While grappling with the pandemic’s uncertainties and working to successfully finish her
high school career, Adrianna managed to complete her Pharmacy Technician coursework and is currently studying for her certification exam. She hopes to use this prerequisite knowledge to jumpstart her post-secondary pursuits. She’s now majoring in Nursing at Howard University. We’re so proud of Adrianna for using the foundation of A Disciplined Life to find meaning and resilience in the pandemic it’s readily apparent that the Perspectives spirit of giving back to our community is deeply instilled in her as she prepares for a life of healthcare work after graduating from high school.

I graduated from our Perspectives Leadership Campus, went to college, earned my graduate degree in psychology, and today I guess you can say I’ve come full circle – because today I teach A Disciplined Life and a Psychology dual enrollment class at Perspectives/IIT Math and Science Academy. I am so proud to be a part of this family and to continue to do what is right for our kids.”
STAFF HIGHLIGHT Rallying behind our students Perspectives’ teachers and staff did such important and impactful work to support our students during the past school year. When I think about the past year, one story comes to mind – I noticed that one of our 8th grade students stopped logging into class. As the principal, I was concerned about the student and decided to see how I could support and I conducted a home visit. Imagine the student’s surprise in seeing her principal at her door! I shared how much everyone missed seeing her in class, and the student began to cry. She said remote learning was too hard; she had given up; she was too discouraged and defeated, too far behind. I promised the student that I would do anything I could to help; so she began to log into class again and I assisted and did whatever it took to help the student graduate. This student, after this point, emailed me every single time she submitted an assignment. She graduated with her class and was extremely happy she met her goals. This is just one story of how the Perspectives community rallied around its students and families, in many ways, to provide support over the past school year. ATHLETICS BACK ON THE COURT & FIELD “We were so excited to have our student athletes back on campus after such a long hiatus from athletics and from the social-emotional bond that athletics fosters. Remote learning made us realize the importance of socialization, resilience, and team-building, and athletics gave our students a positive outlet again. To see them interacting and connecting with one another through team sports meant the world to me. I understand what it must have felt like for them to be in a bubble. This whole experience was unique and new to everyone in the world, and for our students, it was a challenging time of adaptation and isolation.
