ark Cities People is turning 45 on September 4, and instead of counting candles we’re counting memories. Fire, after all, is never a good idea when you’re a newspaper. Join us for a look back at what was happening in the Park Cities 40-plus years ago.

A Fresh Perspective (Sept. 16, 1982) Park Cities People wrote that Kay Gilbert, the first woman to serve on the Highland Park Town Council, added a “feminine touch” to the group. Even on her first night as a council member, Gilbert hadn’t been afraid to speak her mind. The council was ready to dismiss a request for a new stop sign until she reminded the group that protection was important for the community’s most precious commodity, its children. The council later approved the sign’s installation at the corner of Byron and St. John’s.

Smash and Dash at the HP Jail (Sept. 22, 1983) A prisoner under arrest for burglary escaped from the Highland Park jail by kicking a hole in the top of his cell, going through a crawl space into a hallway, and exiting through the back door of the police station.

The town’s assistant director of public safety said that Highland Park planned to renovate the jail in the next year and would probably make ceiling strength a priority. Meanwhile, warrants were out for the escapee’s arrest.

Kid Control (Sept. 23, 1982) Highland Park ISD announced that it was getting tough on uncontrolled children at Highlander Stadium.

Lock your doors and hold onto your key fobs, GMC owners. GMCs are the most frequently reported stolen vehicles across Dallas and the Park Cities.

In Highland Park, 11 GMC vehicles were stolen between 2024 and 2026, followed by Chevrolet with seven reported stolen during the same time period, Highland Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Lance Koppa said.

In University Park, GMC accounted

for 30%, or 15, of the 50 vehicles stolen in 2025, followed by Land Rover at 14%, or seven. In 2024, GMC accounted for 24%, or five, of the 21 vehicles stolen, followed

by Cadillac and Dodge at 19.04%, or four, explained University Park spokesperson Paige Ruedy.

In Dallas, GMC and Chevrolet trucks were followed by Ford trucks (particularly Raptors and F-150, F-250, and F-350 series), according to Officer Jonathan Maner with the Dallas Police Department.

The data is mixed on whether vehicle thefts are increasing or falling.

Maner said the department has seen a 26.8% drop in vehicle thefts so far this year, following a 23.41% reduction in 2025.

“We continue to see offenders using advanced tools such as key programmers to steal high-end vehicles.”

The Highland Park Department of Public Safety reported 32 motor vehicle thefts from June 2024 to June 2025, and 22 from June 2025 to June 2026, Koppa said.

The University Park Police Department has seen 34 motor vehicle thefts reported in 2026 as of July 30, after reporting 50 in 2025 and 21 in 2024, according to Ruedy.

A major roadway reconstruction project in Highland Park is close to starting after more than a year of planning.

The Wycliffe Avenue reconstruction project involves rebuilding part of Wycliffe Avenue between St. Johns Drive and Lakeside Drive to replace the existing dam with a bridge that will mitigate flood risk.

Highland Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Lance Koppa said July 31 that the project is slated to begin early this fall, but a specific start date hasn’t yet been determined.

The existing dam was previously classified as high hazard by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), meaning that its failure would probably cause a loss of life and major property damage downstream. The designation placed Wycliffe Avenue among the most critical dam sites in Texas in terms of public safety risks. The town’s goal is to reclassify the dam as low hazard, a term used to describe dams whose failure would not cause any loss of life or significant economic loss.

“This initiative is a legal and technical necessity designed to mitigate the risk of extreme flooding in the area for both residents and first responders,” according to the town’s website. “The project is engineered to withstand a 100-year storm event without overtopping Wycliffe Avenue, a critical improvement based on updated hydrologic data and modern resilience standards.”

Aside from mitigating flood risks, the project is expected to improve drainage infrastructure, preserve the existing water level in Connor Lake, and lead to upgraded utility infrastructure and traffic improvements, according to the town’s website. It will also include upgraded pedestrian pathways as well as landscaping and aesthetic improvements.

Koppa said that before construction begins, there are some bumps in the road still to clear, in the form of moving utilities.

AT&T started utility work on a stretch of Fitzhugh Avenue from just west of the Katy Trail to Oak Lawn Avenue in late June to set the stage for the project.

That work is still underway, and while it narrowed the roadway on that portion of Fitzhugh Avenue, the roadway has since been partially widened, Koppa said.

After AT&T completes its utility work, Oncor will begin moving utilities, he has said previously.

Once the Wycliffe Avenue reconstruction project gets underway, the work is scheduled for completion in phases.

Drivers in the area around Wycliffe Avenue between St. Johns Drive and Lakeside Drive will continue to notice traffic impacts, including closures or restricted access, at various points during the overall project, according to the town’s website.

Town officials have said that 72% of the estimated $22 million cost of the Wycliffe Avenue reconstruction project is expected to come from external funding sources, including state and federal infrastructure grants, regional partners, and neighboring cities.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) will contribute to the project via an 80/20 federal funding match, while Dallas County will contribute via a 50/50 cost-sharing agreement, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will participate via a grant to support design costs, the town’s website notes.

The cities of Dallas and University Park will also contribute funds for the project.

“The remaining costs, estimated at approximately $6.2 million, will be funded by the Town of Highland Park using local tax dollars,” the town’s website states.

“These funds support both design and construction activities specific to the Town’s infrastructure.”

Boone Elementary student writes book about celebrating differences

A

n 8-year-old student at Boone Elementary is teaching the community to embrace the beauty of being different and love others exactly as they are.

Frannie Crowley has written and published the children’s book, Elisibeth: A Story of Celebrating Differences, which follows an elephant who doesn’t look like the rest of her herd. Instead of silky gray skin, Elisibeth is covered in colorful swirls, stripes, hexagons, and dots.

Through Elisibeth’s story, Frannie reminds readers that the qualities that make us different are the very things that make us special.

“You make the world a more beautiful place just the way you are.”

Frannie Crowley Frannie was born with Holt-Oram syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects her hands and arms as well as her heart. Growing up looking different from her peers hasn’t always been easy, but rather than focusing on what makes her different, Frannie has chosen to celebrate her uniqueness through her writing.

The idea for Elisibeth’s story first came to Frannie when she was 5 years old. She drew the book’s cover and a few illustrations before setting the project aside. She picked the project back up during “Better Me Time,” a part of the Crowley family’s daily routine reserved for reading, drawing, or playing an instrument. One day, Frannie used that time to draw the rest of the pictures and write down Elisibeth’s story.

“I did all the pictures with my feet,” she said. “I can draw and write with my feet.”

Frannie’s mother, Hannah Crowley, even said her foot-writing is better than her older brother’s handwriting.

When Frannie got tired of typing with her feet, Hannah helped her finish the story.

Because Hannah teaches music at Boone Elementary, it has always been a part of Frannie’s life. Together, the mother and daughter wrote “I’m Proud to Be Me!,” an original song designed to be simple enough for elementary students to perform on classroom instruments.

The lyrics echo the book’s message;

everyone has something about them worth celebrating: “I’m unique and special. My heart is full of glee. I make the world beautiful. I’m proud to be me!”

For Frannie, that message extends beyond the pages of her book.

She hopes readers will embrace differences, show kindness to others, and remember that everyone has something unique to offer.

More books are in Frannie’s future, but she doesn’t know what they will be about just yet.

MIS/HPMS Gets a Makeover That Is More Than Skin Deep

Highland Park middle schoolers got a style upgrade this summer, and so did their school.

Fifth through eighth graders ended the year as Raiders but returned to classrooms in August as Scots. Highland Park ISD’s board of trustees approved the mascot change last spring after almost 80% of respondents to a community survey said they favored the switch.

Parent-teacher organization leaders said they hope adopting the high school’s blue and gold builds middle schoolers’ pride for their school and helps them take responsibility for their performance.

“It’s a trickle-down effect,” McCulloch Intermediate School parent-teacher organization president Brooke Garner said. “‘Once a Scot, always a Scot.’ Well, that starts now.”

This summer was optimal timing for a spirit shift at McCulloch Intermediate School and Highland Park Middle School, trustees explained in March. The campus was already due to receive a fresh coat of paint, new mascot graphics, replacement athletic uniforms, and other improvements with November 2024 bond funds. The district did not need to use operational dollars to make the mascot transition.

The impact of the upgrades begins at the schools’ entrance, where the emblem near the front doors has been reimagined for the new Scots. The cafeteria is now the Scots Cafe, and the Raider Shop has become the Scots Supply Shop.

The campus’ gymnasiums are transitioning from the home of the Raiders to the Scots, and red is being repainted with navy blue throughout the building.

display information about upcoming work so that parents and students can stay informed of its progress.

Students had a chance to purchase Scotsthemed spirit wear before the school year started. But even though they’re now wearing blue and gold, they won’t be mistaken for young-looking high schoolers. Parent teacher

organization apparel chairs Nina Toups and Annie Cochran, along with graphic design chair Allison Ellis, worked to create gear targeted to teens and tweens.

Options included designs that were both classical and more innovative, such as a hoodie with pastel lettering and a violet shirt with a floral design.

“There are so many Scots offerings. We wanted to do something different, and so they really spent their time saying what is unique,” explained Garner. “What a middle school kid likes may be different from what a high schooler likes.”

Other changes at MIS/HPMS aren’t solely cosmetic. The district completed the schools’ new turf field and track last spring.

Both are already being well-used by students and community members who remember the prior field, which Garner remarked became a “mud pit” on rainy days.

“It’s a usable field for the school community and for the community at large,” she said.

“That’s really what our neighborhood schools are about.”

The field upgrades and multiple other improvements, such as bathroom remodels, significant upgrades to the auditorium, and a renovation to the teacher cafe, were funded by the 2024 bond. The PTO has added some extra love to turn the teacher cafe into a welcoming space where staff can decompress during the day.

The district has replaced retiring principal Amanda Reyes with two new leaders. Katie Schuttler, a former principal and assistant principal in Carroll ISD, will take the helm at MIS, while Stefanie Powell, an instructional coach and assistant principal in HPISD, has been tapped to serve as principal of HPMS. The district decided to return to a two-principal model after seeking feedback from parents and staff, Pincoffs explained.

“They heard the request of their staff and their parents,” she said. “They listened. And I feel thankful for that.”

AI Workshop in HP Brings Community Together

A mother and daughter explored AI together. A grandfather used the technology to compose a musical score to play with his grandson. And generations of other community members at a recent workshop on AI in Highland Park proved that age is no barrier to use of the emerging technology.

A group of about 25 gathered at Highland Park Town Hall on Aug. 1 for the first AI Equity Project workshop, which was hosted by the Highland Park Library but open to all.The AI Equity Project is a student-led nonprofit organization that seeks to make AI education more accessible.

The organization was founded by Kiran Raja, a senior at the Alcuin School. Its model uses student volunteers to guide communities through workshops about AI with a focus on ensuring older adults can sharpen their knowledge of the technology.

“Just because you’re not the standard demographic that people think of as using AI, that doesn’t mean that you can’t use it to its fullest potential,” Raja said.

After a presentation by Raja about what AI is and how to create prompts, participants worked on

projects using Google’s Gemini.

Suggestions included using Gemini to create a podcast or audio story, build an interactive learning plan, or transcribe and organize handwritten recipes.

Liz Patterson, who uses AI in her work for data services companies, brought her mother, Jeannette, to the workshop to learn more about AI. “She’s catching on pretty quickly,” Liz said.

Rudy Moras decided to attend the workshop after watching an interview with Paulina Barsook, author of the book Cyberselfish, about the influence of tech companies and Silicon Valley.

“I think it’s in the best interest of all of us to understand what we’re all facing,” Moras said. “Like it or not, this is with us to stay, and if anything, it’s going to be even more all-pervasive. So we’re better off knowing what we’re dealing with.”

While at the workshop, Moras employed AI to create a musical score to use when he and his grandson play the violin and cello together.

The AI Equity Project has hosted events at other North Texas libraries.

Raja said the group will host another workshop at Highland Park Town Hall on Oct. 3.

Retired HPISD Physics Teacher: Making Scrutiny Meaningful in Public Education Few public institutions face as much scrutiny as J E F F public educaB A R R OW S tion, but scrutiny matters only when it helps students learn, belong, and succeed. Public concern often centers on safety, programs, and test results, but the deeper question is whether students feel included, understand expectations, and believe they can improve.

Most of us remember struggling to fit in socially or academically.

Good instruction can reduce that uncertainty by helping students become more confident, active learners who are better able to engage with classmates and teachers.

Scrutiny should therefore examine not only outcomes, but also the instructional practices that help students recover from mistakes and see themselves as capable learners.

As a retired high school science teacher, I tried to make instruction clear without overwhelming students. One useful strategy was publishing instructional outlines that summarized the resources behind each topic. These outlines gave students a consistent reference for concepts, connections, and questions.

Instructional Documentation Instruction is the essence of teaching and learning: the words, examples, activities, questions, and feedback teachers use to build un-

derstanding. District curriculum documents and Advanced Placement materials provide important goals, but students benefit most when those goals become practical documentation they can use before, during, and after class.

Effective documentation might include a day-to-day outline, links to assignments and resources, and a consistent format for review. It also helps teachers refine lessons, collaborate around a shared record, and support new colleagues by clarifying a course’s scope, sequence, and opportunities for improvement.

Assessment, Confidence, and Learning from Mistakes Assessments and grades strongly influence how students view a class. In challenging courses, teacher feedback can either encourage students to keep trying or reinforce the belief that they are not capable enough.

Students need structured opportunities to learn from mistakes. Helpful practices include prompt exam returns, time for review and questions, make-up exams, and multiple versions of tests so students can keep their originals for study.

The purpose of any test should be to reinforce understanding.

Questions should show what students know, how well they can apply it, and where they need more practice with reasoning or problem solving.

Without review, even fair exams

can seem confusing or discouraging. When teachers address mistakes directly, they help students build resilience and confidence.

Toward a Shared Culture of Best Practices Teachers advocate for students in many ways, often through informal choices: the questions they ask, examples they choose, and feedback they provide. Instructional documentation can strengthen that work by giving students a dependable guide that reinforces learning.

My goal is to encourage more systematic use of best practices.

AP and IB courses often provide strong models because they offer rich resources for planning, monitoring progress, and reinforcing understanding, but similar support can come from textbooks, online platforms, and teacher-created materials.

The point is not that every teacher should use the same materials or teach the same way. It is that schools can make effective practices easier to share when teachers maintain clear, usable records of what students are expected to learn and how they are supported.

Meaningful scrutiny should lead to better instruction, stronger confidence, and a shared professional culture focused on helping every student learn.

orgetting where you parked is a problem. But losing track of your time machine could be a historic blunder.

Unfortunately for a group of young paleontologists at Highland Park Town Hall, some dinos had hidden their time machine in a prehistoric habitat. They had to find it to go back to their future, and they only had 45 minutes to hunt.

The teens and tweens achieved their mission, and earned some candy in the process, but it wasn’t simple to crack the code of July 23’s Teen Triassic Timeskip. The third annual escape room from the Highland Park Library and University Park Public Library challenged students’ reasoning, math, and problem-solving skills.

“I want them to have fun, but I want them to be encouraged to think about things more deeply, to actually get in there and feel comfortable with moving things and touching things” explained Highland Park’s youth services librarian Victoria Otterbine. “I think it’s helpful for them to use all their senses and be a little more tactile with discovering things and engaging with them.”

Otterbine, who is a fan of ciphers herself, spent between 80 and 100 hours designing the room with assistance from Tre Robling, the library’s youth services assistant, and Zoe Williams, University Park’s youth services librarian.

The librarians constructed many of the props themselves, including “rocks” made from painted papier-mache, a spray-foam “tar pit,” and “trees” that they repurposed from October’s haunted house.

The Feral Cat Group at SMU has managed and cared for homeless cats on the Hilltop since 2005. Currently, the group tends to

approximately 25 cats, but that number fluctuates. The group is supported by funding from the Office of the President and donations, including assistance it receives annually during SMU Giving Day. The university’s furry residents need yearround helpers, a coordinated effort that requires about 40 volunteers.

“It takes a community,” said Rose

Chavez, building manager for the Simmons School of Education and Human Development, who leads the volunteer program.

“People either find us online or call us with an emergency, so we have fosters in the wings willing to step up, so we’re very grateful for our team of people.”

One of those volunteers is Dallas International School senior Estella McFalls.

McFalls, who has a beloved Maine Coon cat of her own at home, decided to use her experience with furry friends to assist animals at her dream school, SMU, after she discovered the Feral Cat Group there via social media.

“I’ve grown up around cats my entire life.

I currently have a Maine Coon,” she said. “I

the “tar pit,” paleontologists spelled the mirror-written word “ROCK” — the code to a locked backpack that contained a Dinosaur Track Reference Guide, the number 5, and a fake Sharpie, which concealed keys to a sample box. Along with artifacts, the sample box contained a paper with the number 7.

The guide advised students to identify and look for “Triassic prints,” which were mixed with a variety of paper dinosaur prints in the room. Using an ultraviolet light that they found in a cracked dino egg, the students read and solved math equations on each print. The answers were the combination to a locked “bush.” Inside was the number 2.

The code 752 unlocked a cardboard and plastic pipe “cave.” Inside was the duffle bag, which excited students opened with the key they had found in the false rock.

Twelve-year-old Oliver Radel, one member of a team who took about 30 minutes to solve the escape room, said the Jurassic journey was hard, but fun. “I like challenges,” he explained.

The Mammoth-sized puzzle was just one activity in the Highland Park Library’s Unearth a Story-themed summer reading program. The fun continued for young scientists on July 25 with a groundbreaking geology program, while adults spent the summer exploring their own stories in writing workshops.

Activities such as the escape room give teens and tweens unique programs they don’t expect, Otterbine said, and show them that, while the library is still packed with books, it also has much more to offer.

“Libraries are evolving,” she said. “If they get that kind of interest and that wonder, maybe they’ll look at some of the other stuff we do as well.” was just like, ‘I’d love to be a part of that.’”

McFalls has helped care for the cats around campus since November of last year and also volunteers with Feed My Starving Children.

Aside from the joy of being with furry friends, McFalls’ time spent caring for the cats helps bolster her volunteer hours for school.

Feral cat volunteers clean and refill food and water bowls, which are set up at eight stations around SMU, and treat the stations for bugs as needed. They note their time spent volunteering, the cats’ food and water needs, and any anomalies in the campus cat population, such as new cats joining the colony or any ill animals.

Volunteers apply online and receive training from experienced volunteers before caring for the cats independently.

Volunteers’ efforts have had an impact.

The Feral Cat Group has about a 95% spay/ neuter/vaccination rate, according to its website. Those efforts have reduced the cat population on campus by almost 50% over the last 10 years.

SMU, along with other universities around the country, utilizes a trap-neuter-return system for managing the campus cat population.

In addition to volunteering with the program or fostering kittens, the Feral Cat Group at SMU also takes donations of money or supplies like cat food, Chavez said.

A student-run store is serving up snacks to teachers at McCulloch Intermediate School and Highland Park Middle School while delivering learning opportunities to students in special education programs.

Special education teachers Amber Burks, Alyssa Early, and Catherine Twardowski created the Raider Snack Shack in the last school year to supplement the academic coursework for special education students. All three teachers were new to Highland Park ISD, Twardowski explained, and they realized that MIS and HPMS lacked a life skills simulation program for students with special needs.

“Fifth through eighth grade is an extremely important time for students to engage with the community and gain skills they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” she added. “When Ms. Burks asked Ms. Early and I to come together as a team to create the Raider Snack Shack, it was a no-brainer!”

For the 2026-2027 academic year, the Raider Snack Shack will rebrand as The Scot Snack Shack to match the mascot change of Raiders to Scots at MIS and HPMS. The Scot Snack Shack teaches students money management skills, such as counting money accurately, in a hands-on way and enables them to become more self-sufficient, Early said. At the same time, the snack shack helps teachers refuel with treats such as chips, sodas, bottled Frappucino drinks, and crackers.

Teachers order their snacks in advance, and they are delivered by groups of students about once a week. Teachers pay for the snacks using play money.

“Everyone deserves to feel like they have a purpose, so building vocational skills for our students is a high priority,” Early remarked. “We want to see them graduate and reach their maximum level of independence, and hopefully that includes having a job, even if, to a neurotypical person, the job may seem small.”

Burks said that not only does the Snack Shack offer a fun break between academics, but it also can give students more real-world independence.

“One of the best parts of the Snack Shack has been seeing how excited the students are to participate. They genuinely enjoy being a part of it, and it’s created a lot of positive interactions with both staff and peers,” Burks said. “It’s been such a rewarding experience to watch them grow through it.”

Your pet has snuck out the door and is nowhere to be found. You run around the block, then get in your car and drive slowly through neighboring streets with eyes hyper-aware of every little movement in each bush.

You post on online bulletin boards hoping that your notice is read before it disappears beneath dozens of others.

To prevent the stress of frantic neighborhood searches and overlooked social posts, husband and wife Zach and Jennifer Munoz have created an app dedicated solely to bringing furry family members home. Furmiliar Faces is free to join, and new members can sign up through their browser without making any downloads.

When an owner reports a missing pet through Furmiliar Faces, users within a onemile radius receive a text message with the animal’s photo and description, allowing neighbors to begin searching immediately.

The inspiration for Furmiliar Faces came from Jen’s daily walks through her Park Cities neighborhood. During those walks, she noticed how many lost animals seemed to emerge from the bushes or wander the streets. Zach has joked that she’s like Snow White because animals naturally gravitate toward her.

She would sometimes recognize the animals she saw, but she didn’t always know the owners. Sometimes, the animal didn’t have a collar, or that collar would only include the animal’s

name, not their owners’ contact information.

Some pets are also too frightened to let you come near them, making it difficult to identify them and reunite them with their

owners. While police can scan a found pet for a microchip, not every animal has one.

Jen and Zach began developing the idea for Furmiliar Faces several years ago. All the

members of the Munoz family came together to bring it to fruition.

“It’s just been like a passion project for the whole family,” Jen said.

Advances in artificial intelligence made it possible for Zach to build the app himself. Using Claude, OpenAI, Cursor, and other development tools, he wrote the code and even used AI to troubleshoot coding issues along the way.

Zach’s efforts meant that the family didn’t need to hire a developer, pay for the work, and wait at least 12 to 18 months for a product they were confident they could create themselves. But the task required a significant time commitment.

“There were several weekends where we did not get out of our pajamas,” Jen said.

Zach and Jen’s teenage sons helped with everything from going door-to-door getting neighbors on the app to testing the app’s functionality. One of their sons plans to be a pre-vet student when he starts college at Auburn University.

The app works best when as many neighbors as possible are signed up. That’s why the Munoz family is focused on expanding its user base and encouraging residents to become, as the app’s tagline says, “a nose for the neighborhood.”

One of the biggest surprises of parenting is realizing there comes a day when your children stop looking to you for every answer ... and start changing the way you see the world.

Fo r ye a r s , I thought my job was to introduce my children to the people, places, traMARTHA ditions, and music JACKSON that had shaped me. I never imagined they’d eventually return the favor.

This summer, my son Blake asked Sean and me to go see Rush with him. If you’re a Rush fan, you may want to stop reading for a moment because I’m about to confess something.

For decades, I couldn’t stand them.

It wasn’t really because of the music.

It was because of what the music represented to me.

Back in middle school, my best friend and I eventually took very different paths. As she made choices that I knew weren’t right for me, certain bands became permanently linked to that chapter of my life. Rush was one of them. So were Styx and REO Speedwagon. The music wasn’t the problem. It was everything the music reminded me of.

However, Blake is a huge Rush fan.

So this summer, I went to the concert with an open mind. As I watched the performance, something unexpected happened. Somewhere between the opening song and the encore, I realized I had spent decades judging a band for reasons that had nothing to do with the band.

As Blake pointed out the things that make Rush legendary, I started listening differently. I began noticing the precision, the complexity, and just how intentional every note seemed to be. For the first time, I understood why so many people consider Rush one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Somewhere along the way, my 17-year-old son had changed my mind.

The older I get, the more I realize parenting isn’t just about teaching our chil-

dren. It’s also about being willing to let them teach us.

Our kids introduce us to new music, new technology, new restaurants, and new ways of seeing the world. They challenge our opinions. They ask questions we can’t answer. Sometimes they even help us let go of ideas we’ve been carrying around for decades.

As parents, we spend so much time trying to prepare our children for adulthood. We teach them values, encourage them to work hard, and hope they’ll grow into kind, thoughtful people.

But if we’re paying attention, they’ll keep shaping us too.

That concert reminded me how easy it is to carry old stories with us long after they’ve stopped serving us. Mine happened to be about a rock band.

The real question is: what’s yours?

Maybe it’s a band. Maybe it’s a tradition. Maybe it’s a first impression you’ve never questioned. Maybe it’s a person you’ve quietly written off. Whatever it is, we all carry stories that shape the way we see the world, often without realizing it.

I walked into that concert convinced I knew exactly how I felt about Rush.

I walked out realizing the band had never really been the issue. I’d been listening through the lens of my past for far too long.

And for that, I’m grateful, not just because I discovered a new appreciation for one of rock’s greatest bands, but because my son reminded me that we’re never too old to see something through a different lens.

Maybe that’s one of the greatest surprises of parenting. We spend years hoping to shape our children’s view of the world, only to discover they’ve been shaping ours in unexpected ways all along.

Over the past 17 years, your collective gifts to thousands of organizations through Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day have created more than $712 million of impact.

In 2025, more than 100,000 North Texans gave $78 million in support of local nonprofits, representing causes from education, health, and social services, to arts, the environment, and animal welfare. This local generosity movement has grown to become the largest regional giving events in the nation, and it all centers around giving from the heart.

Great things happen when we do good, and North Texas Giving Day makes it easy to give. This year’s Giving Day season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 27, and culminates on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026. There are more than 3,300 verified, local nonprofits participating this year, representing more than 25 cause areas.

Communities Foundation of Texas, sponsors, and generous givers cover all transaction and technology fees, so 100% of donations go directly to nonprofits. Many of the participating nonprofits have supporters who have stepped up to match donations made, so that the dollars you give can go twice as far.

Since 2019, Me Squared Cancer Foundation has provided more than $2.4 million in cancer treatment support to upwards of 1,700 adults across the Dallas area. Every dollar of assistance is paid directly to healthcare providers.

Crystal Charity Ball Hall of Famer Tavia Hunt The 2026 Hall of Fame honoree supports a variety of Dallas charitable organizations along with her husband, Kansas City Chiefs co-owner and FC Dallas CEO Clark Hunt. She was previously recognized at the Crystal Charity Ball’s annual Fashion Show and Luncheon from 2003 to 2005.

The local organizations she assists include The Sweetheart Ball supporting UT Southwestern Medical Center, Focus on the Family, Council for Life, the Crystal Charity Ball, the Chiefs Women’s Organization, and nonprofits that serve children and military families or support education and healthcare initiatives.

This spring, the Hunts served as chairs of The Sweetheart Ball, which our sister publication D Magazine reports raised around $4 million.

What are you proudest of having accomplished in the last year?

Professionally, serving as chairman of The Sweetheart Ball and helping raise meaningful support for improving lives across Dallas has been incredibly rewarding. Personally, I’m most proud of watching our children continue to grow into compassionate, faith-filled adults who are pursuing lives of purpose.

Seeing them embrace service and integrity is far more meaningful than any personal recognition.

The first-time honoree and real estate agent serves on the Dallas Symphony Association’s board of governors and assists The Family Place, Junior League of Dallas, the Crystal Charity Ball, and Tri-Delta’s Cookies and Castles benefiting Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. She also enjoys supporting The Episcopal School of Dallas, where her grandchildren are students.

Last year, Mathews served as honorary co-chair of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s annual gala and as honorary chair of The Family Place’s annual Partners Card fundraiser.

Now known as Dallas’ original real estate influencer, Mathews came to Dallas when she was in her 20s and worked at Neiman Marcus before she turned her hobby of remodeling houses into a career in real estate.

She and her family support the Stand Together Foundation, SMU’s Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center, the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, the Salvation Army, and POETIC, which provides support services to girls who have experienced mistreatment, commercial sexual exploitation, and sex trafficking.

She’s also co-chaired the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute’s Texas State of Mind Society.

What is your favorite Dallas event to get dressed up for and why?

The Crystal Charity Ball is one of my favorite evenings of the year. I love seeing everyone dressed so elegantly, and what makes the night truly special is coming together to support children in our community alongside those doing the work.

Haley Anderson

Haley Anderson is a first-year honoree, but a legacy as her mother and grandmother have also been honorees. She was raised in Dallas and attended Highland Park High School. After receiving her sports management degree at the University of Arkansas, she moved to Los Angeles to work for the LA Rams as a ticket service representative. She currently serves as the director of brand development for the Dallas Cowboys. Since joining the Cowboys in 2019, she has participated in projects with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, specifically two performances with legendary band Queen, as well as the Netflix series, America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Kickoff Halftime Show.

What are you proudest of having accomplished in the last year?

Katherine is a third-year honoree, seventh generation Texan, and fourth-generation Dallasite. She serves as CEO of her family’s private foundation, which was founded by her grandparents in loving memory of her Aunt Mary, who was a part of the special needs community. Katherine has chaired and co-chaired numerous fundraising events, including the Equest Gala, Forefront Living Foundation Luncheon, and the Equest Women’s Auxiliary Luncheon and Fashion Show. Shelby Goff

The second-time honoree is a longtime supporter of the Salvation Army of North Texas.

Last year, she and her husband co-founded the organization’s new initiative, “Echelon, Continuing the Legacy,” which aims to bridge the gap between Echelon and the Women’s Auxiliary and foster community connections. Aside from her work with the Salvation Army of North Texas, Goff is a champion of MD Anderson. She chaired its Dallas “A Conversation With a Living Legend” event last year with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Dallas Cowboys Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Jones.

Last year, she also co-chaired Kappa Tablescapes, a twoday event that supported five charities and honored Lila Bonner and Wynne Naylor, who lost their lives in the devastating Central Texas flooding. Tracy, a third-time honoree, has lived in Dallas for almost 30 years with her husband and two children, Luke and Livia. Her family founded Luke’s FastBreaks, a nonprofit inspired by Luke’s desire for more choices than traditional hospital gowns during medical procedures.

She continues to serve on the board of Luke’s FastBreaks and is active with other pediatric charities.

Tracy and her husband served as honorary chairs for the Aging Mind Foundation’s 2025 gala.

Being a Regular Has Its Advantages Dining tourism is at a fever pitch right now thanks to the dining industry’s much sponK E R ST E N R ET TI G sored and hyped awards and the social media idolization of visually engaging restaurants.

Though restaurants clamor for virality, staff frequently lament the often-disruptive content creation that occurs in their restaurants. Trendy vibe dining means there’s a hyper focus on a restaurant’s aesthetic, sometimes prioritizing environment and gimmicks over the food itself. The dine, click, post, and dash (DCPD) crowd drives a certain amount of business. But regulars drive more.

The opposite of the DCPD diner is the “regular,” the person who returns to a restaurant repeatedly because it’s familiar.

A study by the Harvard Business Review revealed that increasing your customer retention by as little as 5% can increase a restaurant’s profit by 25%. Converting visitors to regulars is valuable, both for the restaurant and for the diner.

Social scientists refer to a “third place” as a spot, often a bar, restaurant, or coffee shop, where people desire to spend time outside of home and work. A third place is a haven for predictability and retreat from trend chasing; think Friends’ Central Perk, television’s most famous coffee shop.

Restaurateur Jon Alexis is a second-generation seafood shop owner who owns and operates a lineup of restaurants that happen to be a third place for many.

Paul Bassman, a regular at Alexis’ TJ’s and Ramble Room restaurants, says he and his wife dine several times a month at those spots.

“We love the comfort and consistency,” of dining frequently at the same restaurants, he explained. “We have our regular server, Bri, who we’ve known for years and just love.”

Alexis said hospitality is a vital part of his company’s training protocol; yet despite that, he knows he can’t simply declare his restaurants the place for regulars. No one can. They evolve organically.

Bassman had always enjoyed TJ’s, but when a milestone birthday occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic and a public celebration was impossible, he contacted TJ’s

and its staff catered a celebratory dinner at Bassman’s home. “They went above and beyond for me. I’ve been a regular at Jon’s restaurants ever since” he said.

In many ways, the digital and social age has created a society of people who are alone in a crowd. Being a regular in a restaurant “makes me feel seen and appreciated,” Bassman said. Alexis says he’s deeply grateful for the regular diners who connect with his restaurants and consistently support his staff.

Almost everyone has “their” Tex-Mex spot or pizza place, the default decision when you crave comfort, familiarity, and consistency. When you walk in, do the hospitality staff recognize you? Do they welcome you back or stare blankly at you with no recognition? Do you know your regular server’s name?

If not, consider making more of an effort to connect with your favorite places and the people that make them work. The DCPD crowd tends to see restaurants and staff as extras in their own movies. Regulars like Paul Bassman and his wife believe the real stars are the restaurants and staff that welcome them home every time they walk through the door.

Preston-Royal Rezoning Moves Forward Despite Opposition

After months of debate, a controversial mixed-use project at Preston Road and Royal Lane recently cleared an important procedural hurdle.

The project from developer Leland Burk involves building a hotel/residential tower up to 240 feet, or about 19 stories, another residential tower up to 210 feet, or about 18 stories, and an office building up to 190 feet. The maximum structure height allowed by the area’s current zoning is 54 feet. Burk and his team previously reduced the maximum height proposed for the project.

The project has gotten pushback from some residents near the intersection, including from the group Preserve Preston Hollow and the newly formed coalition of North Dallas neighborhoods called D13 Together.

D13 Together includes representation from Bluffview, Wimberley Court, Preston Hollow, and Melshire Estates.

During an Aug. 4 press conference, the residents expressed concern about the height of the buildings, the potential traffic impacts of the project, and its proximity to schools like St. Mark’s School of Texas.

A hot-button Preston-Royal zoning change to allow for the construction of towers, one of which is proposed to be as high as 240 feet, recently cleared a key hurdle. BURK INTERESTS

“We are in support, 100%, of this corner developing. It’s the height that’s the issue,” Doug Hazelbaker, who is involved with Preserve Preston Hollow and attended the D13 Together news conference, said at the Aug. 6 City Plan Commission meeting.

Megan Ratcliff said her sons attend St. Mark’s and, while she

supports development of the corridor following the 2019 tornado that struck the area, she opposes the plan proposed.

“It’s hard to envision the kids walking along Preston-Royal on a game night, to grab a burger, to meet up with the girls, with three high rises worth of residents and employees added to the mix, and

their cars. This is already a very busy intersection,” Ratcliff said. “We want development, but not this.”

Burk attended the City Plan Commission meeting and said he and his team had made it a priority to meet with residents and take their concerns into account.

“We have listened and we have made significant changes to our

original design,” Burk said.

Some supported the development, saying it would add needed housing to the area.

Steven McCoy lives in the Preston Hollow area and said at the City Plan Commission meeting that he believes the project would provide additional housing options to the neighborhood.

“As aging families start to downsize from those large homes, they need alternative housing, and this project is going to provide some additional resources on housing to fulfill that need,” McCoy said. “But also the retail, the walkable retail and the restaurants that all the surrounding areas need (to) be more of a positive light in bringing energy back to Preston Hollow.”

After hours of debate, Dallas City Plan Commissioner Larry Hall made the motion to approve the rezoning. Dallas City Plan Commissioner Jack Kocks had proposed an amended motion that would allow no structure on the site to exceed 75 feet in height, but that motion failed.

The case will still need to go before the Dallas City Council for final approval. It’s unclear when the city council will take up the case or when the developer might begin construction if it’s approved.

Highland Park Native reclaims her childhood wonder in her new song

hat happens to our childlike wonder when we grow up? Where does it go?

Those questions inspired Highland Park native Erin Duvall’s latest single, “Wide Eyed Wonder,” a song about rediscovering the sense of awe that can fade with age.

For Duvall, a single mother of four, life gets crazy. There’s carpool, homework, heartbreak, and everything in between. But in those in between moments, Duvall has been privileged to witness life through her children’s eyes and reclaim the wonder that was misplaced.

The song didn’t come to her all at once. Instead, it grew from years of watching her children experience the world.

“Seeing the world through my children’s eyes with that glimmer and hope was what gave me inspiration,” Duvall said. “A firefly becomes magic to them, or cardboard becomes castles, or just the way that the sunlight hits the sidewalk, and then they want to paint it. That is such a beautiful perspective.”

From the start, Duvall knew she wanted to write a song about holding on to hope and a sense of wonder. She watched her children and looked back on her own memories of growing up. One lyric came directly from a memory of when she and her brother built a castle out of a cardboard box for a turtle they discovered in the creek near Armstrong Elementary School.

Duvall emphasized that she was surrounded by love as a child. Growing up in a house with five siblings, her home was always full of life. She knew she

“You want to take the good parts from your own childhood and continue those,” she said.

Duvall’s favorite lyric from the track is “We were just kids wishing.” It reminds her of dreaming big as a child, and especially of her ambition to become a Broadway star. Everything feels boundless as a child; that’s what makes everything seem possible.

Duvall hopes that listeners will slow down, choose joy, and remember that beauty and wonder still exist in the everyday moments around them.

Looking ahead, Duvall will release a cover of Linda Ronstadt’s “Poor, Poor Pitiful Me” before her full album drops in October. A Texas native raised in musical theater, Duvall has long admired Ronstadt ’s ability to blend soul with gritty rock and country, a sound that continues to influence her own music.

Outside of her music career, Duvall is also focused on giving back. Her nonprofit, Twice the Love Foundation, supports single parents. It will host a benefit at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in November featuring a Grammy and Oscar nominated artist.

SARAH MILBURN HELPS OTHERS NAVIGATE LIFE WITH PARALYSIS

arah Milburn has rebuilt her life since a 2015 rideshare crash left her paralyzed.

Now, the Park Cities native is working to help others with similar injuries rebuild theirs.

“I believe that this happened to me for a reason,” Milburn said, “and I’m here to make a difference.”

Her advocacy is the focus of a new film, Living in the Wake of Impact, which includes footage of her parents’ Park Cities home and other locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The documentary’s director, Sarah Moshman, called Milburn a “beautiful example of the power of the human spirit.”

“I was just absolutely blown away by Sarah and all that she does every single day to get stronger physically, but also the way that she helps others through mentorship and sharing her story,” Moshman said. “She’s just such a joyful, optimistic person.”

Today, Milburn is a volunteer at the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation, the same hospital where she was treated, providing advice and comfort to people learning to live with paralysis.

“I mentor them if they’re newly injured, navigate them through their new injury, and what their new life is going to look like,” she said.

She’s also served on the board of the Neuro Assistance Foundation and has been a peer mentor for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation since 2016, where she assists others with spinal cord injuries around the world.

Milburn co-designed the first wheelchair-accessible Tesla Model X in the U.S. The vehicle she helped create has since been used around the country and received Veterans Affairs approval. She’s also shared her story with

groups including the Texas Bar Association and a committee of the Texas Legislature.

In the Park Cities, Milburn has advocated to ensure sidewalks, intersections, and businesses are wheelchair accessible. Her efforts have led

to the installation of a handicap crosswalk at the intersection of Preston Road and Lovers Lane.

She also has founded a Dallas-area Paralympic swim team. Milburn herself had the second-best American time in the 50-meter backstroke competition in 2019.

“She has a reputation as a fearless problem solver in the (spinal cord injury) community,” said Sarah’s father, John.

Milburn’s efforts don’t stop with assisting others facing paralysis. She also dedicates 15 to 20 hours per week to volunteering with local dog rescue group DallasDoggrrr.

In a case that reached the Supreme Court of Texas and made headlines, Milburn pursued civil litigation against the manufacturer of the vehicle where she was a passenger. A jury found Milburn should receive about $37 million in damages, but the state’s highest court determined that no evidence supported the jury’s award and reversed it.

The film about Milburn’s journey as a quadriplegic was commissioned by LegalMed180, an organization that seeks to bring people in law, healthcare, and policy together to improve outcomes for those experiencing health issues.

“The number of people involved and the professionalism of the production was great but a little overwhelming,” John said. “We are extremely pleased and proud of Sarah’s impact and accomplishments.”

Dressing. I created this recipe years ago for one of my cookbooks, but recently my sister mentioned that she’d brought it to a church event.

My mouth instantly watered with flavor and texture memories — the peppery, slightly wilted arugula, creamy white beans, crunchy onion, and delicate fresh dill coated in a tangy tarragon, garlic, and Dijon mustard vinaigrette. Served with sauteed chicken breasts, grilled pork chops, or baked fish, this zesty, make-ahead side dish never fails to perk up a hot-weather meal. And, when you want a one-dish meal on a busy day, top the salad with tuna or chopped, rotisserie chicken for an easy dinner.

Need a quick salad for your next luncheon? I’ve taken this one to luncheon meetings on many occasions because I can quickly assemble it early in the morning and it’s ready to go at noon. The dish tastes best when the flavors have a couple of hours to meld and the arugula

White Beans, Arugula, and Dill with Tarragon Dressing Ingredients: 2 (15-ounce) cans Great Northern beans, rinsed and drained 3 sprigs fresh dill, rinsed, stemmed and chopped 1 small bunch fresh arugula, rinsed, stemmed, and chopped ½ cup sweet onion, peeled and diced 2 tablespoons tarragon vinegar 2 to 3 drops white wine Worcestershire sauce 1 large clove garlic, peeled ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ¼ cup olive oil

In a large mixing bowl, gently stir together the beans, dill, arugula, and onion. Set aside.

In the bowl of a mini food processor, combine the tarragon vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.

Process until the mixture is smooth. Add the olive oil and process until the dressing is creamy. Taste and adjust the seasonings, if necessary. Pour the dressing over the beans.

Toss well, transfer the salad to a serving bowl, and serve. If desired, cover and chill 2 hours until cold.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Two Leaders Tapped to Fill Assistant Principal Roles at Christ the King

Special Contributor Christ the King Catholic School decided two assistant principals were better than one when it came to replacing Rosemary Kohut, who was promoted to principal in the spring.

“We really were just looking for a good fit, someone that would feel as passionate about Christ the King and our beliefs as we do,” Kohut said, explaining that two assistant principals could better handle the responsibilities that have come with the school’s enrollment growth.

In May, the school chose a pair of leaders for the roles who were already familiar with Christ the King, Beth Burau and Grace Chengery.

Kohut quickly thought of Chengery when she began considering candidates. Chengery began teaching at Christ the King in 2020. Her willingness to help led to roles supporting students with learning differences and coordinat-

ing standardized testing in the last school year.

Chengery came to Kohut when she had questions and had learned that whenever Kohut asks something of you, the answer is yes.

Chengery enjoyed helping the school as a whole and felt that becoming an assistant principal was a natural steppingstone.

Burau has spent the last 23 years at Bishop Lynch High School, where she has experience serving as instructional technology coordinator. She was attracted to the Christ the King role by the opportunity to continue helping teachers.

Burau was familiar with Christ the King through teaching Christ the King alumni and past service as a member of the school’s advisory board.

Burau also attended the Christ the King Church when she first moved to Dallas from the University of Notre Dame in 2000.

Burau came to the area to teach at Saint Mary of Carmel Catho-

lic School as part of the Alliance for Catholic Education program, a two-year service commitment for teachers pursuing master’s degrees in education from the University of Notre Dame. Burau completed the program and stayed for an extra year at Saint Mary of Carmel before moving to Bishop Lynch.

While Burau loves Bishop Lynch, she is excited for the opportunity to help teachers with lessons plans. Kohut said Burau has been a worker bee in the summer — she has jumped right in and embraced the position.

“She’s been fantastic,” Chengery said. “I’m so glad we’re doing it together because I think we’re going to complement each other really well.”

Kohut said that there is currently no separation of duties between Chengery or Burau. The plan is for them to work as a team.

“We’re all going to just work together wonderfully,” Kohut said. “I think it’s just going to be a really strong team for the school.”

Emily Susman knew she didn’t need alcohol to have a great cocktail.

But the Highland Park High School graduate couldn’t find an easy-to-prepare, craveable mocktail that made her want to raise her glass.

So the chef and author drew on her experience and commitment to sobriety to cook up Navi Mocktails, a line of portable, powdered sachets that combine with sparkling water to bring a taste of the tropics to any destination.

“I think Navi will give people a reason to celebrate,” said Susman, who graduated from HPHS in 2001. “(To) have something fun and flavorful that they feel like they’re part of the party, without having peer pressure to put alcohol in it.”

Susman, who spent years struggling with alcohol, began her own sobriety journey in 2021. After a hard night of partying, she awoke from a hangover and decided it was time for a fresh start, for both herself and her marriage.

She’s since lost more than 100 pounds and gained a desire to change the lives of others who struggle to maintain an alcohol-free lifestyle.

“When I got sober, I realized I was like, if I can help one person get sober, then I feel like I will have done my mission,” she said.

Susman began by creating mocktails at home. She wanted to combine tropical flavors with nu-

“Don’t be scared to make a change in your life,” Susman said, “because I promise you one thing: getting sober, you will never regret it.”

Susman’s own journey doesn’t end here. She plans to roll out even more Navi Mocktails flavors, as well as to keep helping others climb their mountains and change their lives.

Local Cook Spices Up North Texas Kitchens

Preston Hollow’s Arpitha Neravetla was in her 40s when she finally mastered her mother’s recipe for perfectly balanced garam masala. Until then, the former business analyst relied on care packages from Hyderabad, the South Indian city where she grew up.

Shoppers can now find her family’s recipe on store shelves closer to home.

Neravetla’s company, Spicytude, recently tied for third place in H-E-B’s annual Quest for Texas Best competition, which attracted multiple entries from more than 370 entrepreneurs in 2025.

S pic y tude kits use high-quality, carefully sourced spices, step-by-step recipes, and videos to make it simple for home cooks to reproduce authentic Indian dishes. The kits are available at North Texas H-E-B stores, Preston Hollow’s Infused Oils & Vinegars, Empire Baking Company locations, and spicytude.com.

Neravetla will also be on hand from Oct. 8 to 18 in the State Fair of Texas’ GO TEXAN Pavilion.

“I specifically designed these kits for the American chef,” she said. “Anybody, even a beginner, will feel comfortable cooking Indian food. And it will come out perfectly every time.”

Neravetla was inspired to create Spicytude after a friend explained that, even with a recipe and ingredients, she still

I love eating Indian food, but I’m not a fan of cooking it. My home-cooked meals never taste quite as good as what I can defrost from Trader Joe’s.

I learned about Spicytude through a friend who met Arpitha Neravetla at the St. Michael’s Farmers Market. Cooking her chicken tikka masala at home was easy. The result was delicious. When I heard about Spicytude’s third-place win in H-E-B’s Quest for Texas Best competition, I decided to write about Neravetla’s journey and buy a few more spice kits in the process.

couldn’t make biryani, a flavorful Indian dish that combines basmati rice and rich spices with meats or vegetables.

Neravetla challenged herself to make the recipe easy, but doing so was harder than she thought. It took years to write her method for cooking flavorful biryani, along with recipes for tikka masala and butter chicken sauces, and record videos that she knew would be key to reproducing them at home.

Bringing her idea to consumers posed another set of challenges. To develop her idea, she drew on assistance from SCORE mentorship, a free service funded in part by the Small Business Administration.

“I was still scared to go to the market,” she said. “I had never done that in my life. Finally, after two-and-a-half years, I applied to the Dallas Farmers Market.

They gracefully accepted.”

H-E-B’s culinary products development manager stopped by Neravetla’s farmer’s market booth one day, was impressed with her product, and encouraged her to apply for the company’s competition.

Neravetla did not make the finals that year, but she was named one of the top 10 when she tried again in 2025. She made an in-person pitch on stage in San Antonio last fall.

“I’m a little stage shy. I can talk oneon-one, but I don’t like the focus on me.

I asked my daughter to be with me,” Ner-

avetla said. “She came and she made me comfortable.”

Since her third-place finish, H-E-B has helped Neravetla bring her product to 25 stores. With help, she still grinds her spices in a Vitamix and mixes them by hand. But she has plans to crank up the flavor in Spicytude’s future.

“My dream is to get into more American stores, so we are in more American kitchens,” she said. “I don’t know how to get there, but one step at a time.”

Neravetla has already expanded her product line at the request of farmer’s market customers. Spicytude kits now include vindaloo, rice pilaf, and chai masala, and Neravetla has plans to add korma and saag.

But her ambitions don’t end in the kitchen. She married at 17, had a daughter at 18, and was on her own at 21. In addition to financial pressure, she had to deal with the stigma of divorce and single motherhood in India.

She would like to eventually donate a portion of her profits to helping girls and women overcome similar struggles.

“Something changed in my life that I can really take this on,” she said. “All my other dreams can come true because of this.”

Expect More Balance Offensively From the Scots

Points were not at a premium for Highland Park a year ago.

The Scots racked up an average of 47.5 points per game and scored more than 50 points on six occasions.

When the level of competition stepped up, so too did HP. The Scots averaged 46.5 points in their four playoff contests.

HP is hopeful for similar production in 2026, and with good reason. Quarterback Buck Randall is back for his third season starting under center.

Last year, Randall threw for 4,396 yards and 51 touchdowns while also chipping in 509 rushing yards and 12 additional scores.

But if you ask Randall, much of the optimism surrounding HP’s offense comes with its balance.

“I want to say that we’re going to be an explosive offense,” he said. “But at the same time, looking at our new personnel, I think we’re going to have a really good running game …

I think we’ll be able to lean on that more and control the game a little better.”

HP’s offensive line features two returning starters in Benton Weathersby and Cooper Alt, as well as Colton Williams — who earned a starting spot a year ago before suffering a season-ending injury in HP’s opener.

Rounding out the projected starters on the line are Luke Swaner and Trey Lander, while Caiden Reeves is projected to be the lead running back with support from James Flowers.

The biggest question comes at receiver, where HP was decimated by graduation. But Randall noted that he is al-

Notable: The Lions hope to take another step forward in 2026 after qualifying for the playoffs last season under Rashaun Woods.

Tyler must replace a three-year starting quarterback, but Oregon commit and running back CaDarius McMiller provides the Lions with a dynamic playmaker.

Last year, HP prevailed over Tyler in a shootout, 70-66.

Notable: Powerhouse Argyle figures to be in the state title hunt in Class 5A Division II following a berth in the regional finals last season. Prosper Walnut Grove transfer Hayes Hackney takes over under center for the Eagles.

He will be throwing to one of the area’s premier receivers in Julian Caldwell behind one of the state’s top offensive lines.

Notable: Naaman Forest has dropped down a classification to 5A after making the playoffs a year ago in 6A. The Rangers figure to be among HP’s top competitors in 6-5A DII behind quarterback Jaki Robinson, who threw for nine touchdowns and rushed for another nine scores as a sophomore. Two-way star Braylon Deal also returns for the Rangers after a standout junior campaign.

Notable: There is plenty of excitement within the Turner program coming off the 2025 season, when the Lions secured their most wins (five) in more than 20 years. Thirteen members of that squad will be back on the field for Turner, including eight defensive starters, while Legend Farda will likely be tasked with leading the wing-t offense under center.

Notable: Creekview has made the playoffs in each of its two seasons with Ortiz as head coach. It will be seeking a third consecutive berth behind third-year starting quarterback Cason Garcia.

Receivers Gavin Palacio and Tay Evans are also back for what could be a high-flying Creekview offense. The game will be broadcast on KDFI Channel 27.

Notable: Birdville is seeking its first playoff appearance under head coach Chris Smith, but is hopeful that drought ends in 2026. The Hawks are yet another 6-5A squad returning a three-year starting quarterback in Zach Wells and are well-equipped at the skill positions with receivers Braylin Montoya and Jake Subjeck and running back Anthony White.

Notable: Houston is in his first season leading the Trojans after previously being defensive coordinator at Fort Worth Southwest. He will have his work cut out inheriting a defensive unit that graduated 10 seniors from a playoff team a year ago. Offensively, Smith is seasoned at running back and on the line, but will feature a new quarterback.

Unfinished Business: Scots Eye Seventh State Title

The ingredients are there for Highland Park’s football team to make a deep postseason run in 2026.

It doesn’t start on the field, though, for a program like HP. It starts with upholding a tradition built over years and years as the winningest program in Texas high school football history.

More than 900 all-time victories. Six state championships. Sixty district titles.

“The team sets the goals for the team, but there’s been a standard and an expectation that the seniors leave the program better than they found it,” said Randy Allen, HP head coach. “They want to play as long as they can play and reach their potential. We start off with the idea that we’re the winningest team in the state of Texas, so we want to honor that tradition.”

With a state championship appearance in 2024 and a berth in the regional finals in 2025, HP’s seniors have already done their fair share of carrying on the tradition.

But the experience of coming oh so close to the program’s seventh state championship will also be a driving force for the Scots.

“There’s a lot of motivation and a lot of saltiness in our mouth from the last couple of years,” said senior captain and offensive lineman Cooper Alt. “I think we have what it takes to put it all together this year, though. We’ve been there, we’ve been close, and we have an amazing quarterback like Buck (Randall) who has started in the state championship before.”

On the field, eight playoff wins over the previous two seasons give a strong indication HP has the pedigree to play with anyone.

And if you ask HP’s captains, they have the talent this year, too.

That starts under center where seemingly the only thing missing on the resume of the aforementioned Randall is a state championship ring.

SMU pledge is coming off a season in which he threw for 4,396 yards and 51 touchdowns while chipping in 509 yards and 12 additional scores on the ground.

For his performance, Randall was named the 2025 District 7-5A Division I MVP. That on the heels of a sophomore campaign in which he led the Scots to the state title game and threw for 3,899 yards with 40 touchdowns and 12 rushing scores.

In the backfield, Caiden Reeves is set for an expanded role after gaining 102 yards (4.3 per carry), while two-way player James Flowers (254 yards, eight touchdowns last season) will provide support in addition to his defensive duties.

The pair will be running behind an offensive line that appears capable of mauling opponents.

Alt and Benton Weathersby are returning after starting for HP a year ago, as is Division I prospect

Colton Williams, who was a starter a year ago but suffered a season-ending injury in HP’s first game. Luke Swaner and Trey Lander round out the projected starters for the Scots.

“We have some good experience coming back,” Alt said. “Even some of the guys who weren’t starters last year still got some playing time.

“The thing I really like about our line is that it is super tightly-knit. We’re all friends with each other and there’s no gaps between us. These are the guys I’m going to hang out with on a Friday night.

It’s not like I’m going to see you at practice and that’s it.”

With a beefy and deep offensive line, and three capable runners, the ground game could be an added weapon for a Scots team that has already produced prolific scoring numbers under the helm of Randall.

The extra security of a dominant rushing attack could also benefit the Scots’ passing game

as HP works in a new-look receiving corps.

Slated to start for the Scots are James Axley, Evan Snelleman, Liam Thomas, and Luke Cecil, while Beckett Lawrence, Dean Dulin, and Max Green are also expected to contribute.

“I have a ton of confidence in those guys, especially after seeing how the 7-on-7 games went over the summer,” Randall said. “We got to see guys like Colton Heinlen, who took two years off from football and just came back. He balled out and played incredibly. He’s going to be key on the outside for us.

Beckett Lawrence is a young guy, and we got to see a lot of him, and he had a lot of clutch touchdowns in 7-on-7. That’s really exciting, seeing those young guys that might not even necessarily be starters, but when guys go down, they’re going to be in there.”

Defensively, HP returns just three starters. But the Scots are

fortunate to have not only a key returner at every level, but a captain.

“It’s funny that’s not how it’s supposed to fall, but it seems like every year that’s how it goes,” said returning cornerback and first-team all-district performer Dulin. “It’s how it should be. There are leaders in every area. Secondary, linebackers, d-line, o-line, and of course quarterback. So it works out pretty well.”

In the trenches, Boone Thompson is slated to start at nose tackle with Charlie Flint and Nick van der Westhuizen manning the defensive end spots. Patton Vargas, Slade Stapp, William Lajous, and Fischer Millican will also figure into the rotation.

Linebackers include captain Lee Wagner, Graham Rodgers, Beckett Curtis, and Dean Williams.

Joining Dulin in the secondary are cornerback Sutton Spillman and safeties Cotton Patterson and Green.

“I think we have a good amount of guys that gained a lot of experience last year, so I think we’re set up pretty good there,” Dulin said.

That potential defense, coupled with HP’s firepower offensively, figures to keep HP competitive in any game.

But if you ask Randall, the key ingredient to going one step further and reaching Texas football immortality may well be the chemistry and confidence he has seen throughout the offseason.

“I really think it’s going to come down to the belief we have,” he said.

“Looking back at the state team two years ago, I really see a lot of similarities to that team with a lot of defensive-heavy leadership guys and then some new, young offensive guys. They haven’t proven their skills at the varsity level yet, but I think we’re going to see it. There’s a lot of belief between each guy here, and I think later in the season, what’s going to get you points and wins is really believing late in the game that you can win it.”

RANDALL’S RUN FOR THE RECORD BOOKS

ith more than 900 victories, Highland Park is the winningest Texas high school football program of all time.

In addition to unparalleled team success, the Scots have produced a lineage of quarterbacks few in the state can match.

HP’s tradition of standouts under center began way back in the 1940s, when Bobby Lane quarterbacked the Scots before going on to star at the University of Texas and producing a professional football career worthy of Hall-of-Fame induction.

Many believe current NFL MVP Matthew Stafford, who led HP to a state title in 2005 and played collegiately at Georgia before being selected first overall in the NFL draft, is on his way to donning a gold jacket in Canton as well.

The success doesn’t stop there, however.

consecutive state titles before departing for Arkansas, when Chandler Morris stepped in and took the Scots to a third straight championship in 2018.

Morris is currently on Tampa Bay’s roster following a successful collegiate career with stops at Virginia and North Texas, among others.

Alexander Webb (Northwestern), Bill Foran (Princeton), Luke Woodley (Louisville) and Brayden Schager (Hawaii) are also among a contingent of Division I quarterbacks who have left their mark at HP. But senior SMU pledge Buck Randall is positioned to finish with his name above any and all at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

needs just 655 passing yards to eclipse Stafford’s program-record of 8,958 yards.

That isn’t the only milestone within reach for Randall, however. Graham Harrell’s record-setting numbers while playing at Ennis are also in jeopardy of falling.

From 2000-2003, Harrell — who played collegiately at Texas Tech and for multiple seasons in the NFL before moving into the coaching ranks (currently as offensive coordinator at Abilene Christian) — amassed a total of 12,532 passing yards and 167 touchdowns.

The former number ranks first in the history of Dallas-Fort Worth public-school quarterbacks.

To pass Harrell, Randall needs to accumulate 4,330 yards through the air.

Last year, Randall racked up 4,396 yards over 14 games. “ We’re really

proud of our quarterback tradition here,” said Randy Allen, HP head coach. “There aren’t too many who have done what Buck is doing.

Matthew was a three-year starter for us, and Alexander was a part-time starter for three years. Buck is the only other one to do that.”

When asked what makes Randall so productive, Allen didn’t hesitate.

“Accuracy,” he said. “He’s one of the most accurate quarterbacks we’ve ever had. Without a doubt.”

While accuracy has certainly played a role in Randall’s prodigious passing numbers, his legs have also been integral in the success of HP’s offense.

In two seasons as a starter, Randall has rushed for 884 yards and an additional 24 touchdowns.

Add it all up, and a place in the pantheon of legendary HP quarterbacks is already secure before Randall even takes the field for his senior season.

The only question is where it will finish.

The team will shift its season into high gear with the Highland Park Football Caniac Supper & Auction, the largest football fundraiser of the year.
