id you know that Park Cities People will celebrate its 45th birthday next month? We published our first issue on September 4, 1981. As we approach middle age, we’re reminiscing about the people, places, and events that have shaped our community’s story. So, what was happening in the Park Cities 40plus years ago?

Not Under My Roof (August 5, 1982) Hundreds of angry residents attended a University Park Board of Commissioners meeting to protest an ordinance that would have permitted the city to inspect homes and ensure they met minimum housing standards. The Board voted unanimously to throw out the proposal in the meeting’s first two minutes, but that didn’t stop irate members of the crowd from continuing to speak against the already-dead ordinance.

(August 18, 1983) Highland Park High School’s new drill team needed a name and uniforms for the upcoming football season. Park Cities People’s publisher Reid Slaughter took matters into his

own hands, launching a “Name the HP Drill Team Contest.”

Entries included “The Highlandaires,” “Classy Lassies,” and “The Highland Fling,” but Slaughter chose “The Highlander Highsteppers” as the competition’s winner. Fortunately for today’s Highland Belles, that name didn’t stick.

Olympians Make a Splash (August 2, 1984) Park Cities natives Mike Heath and Bruce Hayes led the country’s 4x200 freestyle relay team to a gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Hayes held off the West German “Albatross,” then considered the world’s best swimmer, by inches to clinch the team’s world-record-breaking win. His anchor leg is still cited as one of the greatest swimming finishes of all time.

University Park’s Ice Cream Dreams Melt (August 2, 1984) The city rejected the only application for a permit under its new ice cream vending ordinance. That potential ice cream truck driver had a concealed weapons arrest and multiple speeding tickets. City officials said that they were

Don’t Let Scammers Crash Your Summer Vacation

Summer vacation should end with souvenirs and great memories, not stories about getting scammed.

As travel season has heated up, so have schemes designed to separate travelers from their money. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging consumers to stay alert, warning that vacation rental fraud and other travel scams continue to target people eager to book their next getaway.

One of the most common scams begins

long before travelers pack their bags. Fraudsters create fake vacation rental listings using stolen photos, enticing descriptions, and bargain prices that are hard to resist, reports the BBB. They often ask prospective renters to communicate outside trusted booking platforms and pay deposits through wire transfers, cash apps, or gift cards. Many victims don’t realize they’ve been duped until they arrive at a property that either doesn’t exist or isn’t available.

One traveler who reported the incident to BBB Scam Tracker said a person posing as an Airbnb host offered a substantial discount if they canceled their reservation on

the platform and paid directly.

“After I sent a $500 deposit, he stopped responding, and I never got my money back,” said Mike Vitko.

To avoid becoming a victim, the BBB recommends verifying that a rental property exists by keeping all communication and payments on trusted platforms such as Airbnb or Vrbo, requesting a written rental agreement, checking online maps and street views, and paying with a credit card. Travelers should avoid paying through wire transfers, gift cards, or other nonrefundable payment methods such as Venmo and Zelle, said the BBB.

Scammers can also strike once a vacation begins. The BBB warns of fake calls from someone claiming to be the hotel front desk.

The caller may say there’s a problem with the credit card on file and ask guests to verify their payment information. Instead, travelers should hang up and contact the front desk directly.

The BBB advises travelers to take additional precautions such as avoiding financial transactions on public hotel Wi-Fi, notifying their bank before traveling, protecting electronic devices with passwords, and waiting until after returning home to post vacation photos on social media.

June 15 Reported at 10:29 p.m.: A porch pirate picked up packages containing just over $360 in items, including baking soda, vitamins, a dog collar, dog pads, and dog treats, from a home in the 4500 block of Belclaire Avenue.

June 16 Reported at 1:58 p.m.: A crook took a license plate from a vehicle parked on Amherst Street.

June 17 Reported at 7:53 a.m.: A pilferer stole a package from a home on Greenbrier Drive.

June 18 Reported at 5:11 p.m.: A fraudster purporting to be a sheriff seeking to collect bond money scammed a person in the 4200 block of Potomac Avenue out of $100 via Bitcoin transfer.

June 19 Reported at 1:57 p.m.: A mischief maker refused to leave a Super Cuts on Hillcrest Avenue and was trespassed.

June 20 Reported at 6:58 a.m. A burglar broke into a vehicle in the 4300 block of Hyer Avenue.

June 22 Reported at 12:09 p.m.: How easy was it for a thief to take a tool bag containing about $1,000 worth of tools from a truck in the 3900 block of Euclid Avenue? The truck may have been left unlocked.

June 24 Reported at 5:33 p.m.: A would-be grass trimmer thief was thwarted after taking a tool from a truck in the 3600 block of Maplewood Avenue when the resident spotted him trying to walk away with it.

June 25 Reported at 1:35 p.m.: An opportunistic stealer took a purse from a vehicle in the 4300 block of Livingston Avenue that’d been left unlocked.

June 26 Reported at 7:02 a.m.: A ne’er-do-well stole stuff from a commercial/office building on Hillcrest Avenue.

June 27 Reported at 4:55 p.m.: A careless driver hit another vehicle on Hillcrest Avenue, damaging it, and provided expired insurance information before leaving the scene.

June 29 Reported at 1:49 p.m.: A shopping bag stealer was likely disappointed after smashing the window of a Volkswagen SUV outside the Christian Dior store in Highland Park Village and taking a Dior shopping bag that turned out to be empty.

June 30 Reported 1:52 p.m.: A crook stole items from the garage of a home on Bryn Mawr Drive.

July 2 Reported at 4:07 p.m.: A fraudster purporting to be from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) contacted a resident in the 3400 block of Lindenwood Avenue by email and stated that a box of pain medication

with the resident’s DEA and NPI numbers on it had been found in a vehicle on a highway. Calls were redirected or disconnected when the resident’s attorney asked a question requiring verification.

July 9 Reported at 8:13 p.m.: A scuffle broke out after a jerk threw lemonade at two boys operating a lemonade stand at the corner of Golf Drive and Normandy Avenue, got out of a vehicle, and chased them around with a chair before stealing $50 that had fallen and fleeing the scene.

July 10 Reported at 6:01 p.m.: A selective shoplifter hid a $580 belt under his clothes at the Fendi store in Highland Park Village and left the store with it.

Despite rocky stretches, businesses and local law enforcement scored some goals during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Londoner in Mockingbird Station drew crowds of England fans both before and after the England vs. Croatia match on June 17, with demand at times exceeding the pub’s capacity.

U.K. media outlets reported that hundreds of England supporters gathered at the pub the night of June 16 before the Three Lions’ match against Croatia at Dallas Stadium.

Dallas Police Department senior public information officer Corbin Rubinson said the department responded to the Londoner regarding crowds, but the crowd dispersed without incident, no injuries were reported, and no arrests were made at that point.

On June 17, following the match in which England beat Croatia 4-2, the Londoner management came to an agreement with fire inspectors to close for the rest of that day after exceeding the allowed occupancy twofold, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans.

“Management, at the direction of Fire Inspectors, exhausted multiple options in an attempt to get to the allowable number, but the crowd was non-compliant.

Management acknowledged that they had lost control of the crowd and decided they were going to shut down,” Evans said.

The Londoner in a post on social media at the time noted that it was thankful for the fans and doing its best to handle the crowds.

“We are incredibly grateful for the business and have done our absolute best to manage it,” the post read. “Reminder to our guests: We are in a complex of other businesses, but there are also residences in Mockingbird Station.”

The Londoner remained a popular spot to watch World Cup matches throughout the tournament.

North Texas has hosted nine World Cup matches, the most of any host city.

The list of North Texas games began

with the Netherlands vs. Japan, then continued with the England vs. Croatia game, Argentina vs. Austria, Japan vs. Sweden, Jordan vs. Argentina, Cote d’Ivoire vs. Norway, Australia vs. Egypt, and Portugal vs. Spain. Dallas Stadium also hosted a semifinal match between France and Spain on July 14. The 2026 FIFA World Cup culminated in the final match at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

In the Park Cities, law enforcement agencies said that everything clicked after a year spent preparing for the World Cup’s arrival. SMU’s Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium served as a training site for participating teams during the World Cup. The site, then known as Westcott Field, also served as a training ground during the 1994 World Cup. “Dallas is one of the world’s most dynamic and globally connected cities, and SMU is proud to help welcome the FIFA World Cup to our region,” SMU President Jay Hartzell said. “This opportunity reflects the strength of our partnerships, our global community and the exceptional experiences available to our students and faculty.

The University Park police department had staff available, according to a city spokesperson, but the World Cup ran smoothly.

“Senior UPPD officials are on-site for FIFA activities that could have an impact on the University Park community,” city spokesperson Paige Ruedy said in June while matches were ongoing. “To date, we have been very pleased with local operations and have not encountered any situations that have exceeded the capacity of local resources.”

Highland Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Lance Koppa said in June that his department hadn’t seen traffic or parking issues related to World Cup practices or games.

Koppa said the Department of Public Safety had maintained increased staffing for practice and game days but hadn’t had to utilize on-call staff as of June 26.

“It’s better to be overprepared for big events like this, and that’s the mindset that we had going into it,” he added. “For us, it’s been a great experience.”

Remembering Mr. Bohac: Giant Presence, Even Bigger Heart Beloved assistant principal died on June 5 at age 75

Ask almost anyone who knows the Highland Park school district about Richard Bohac, and they’ll have a story to tell.

Over nearly five decades in the community, Richard Bohac was a steady presence in many lives. Whether you knew him as an assistant principal, a coach for the Highland Park football team, an educator, or a friend, you quickly learned he was far more than his job title.

He was a big man with a booming voice. You could hear him from the other side of the school and if he spotted you skipping class, there was no running away.

He was even called the Manhunter during his years at the high school. Maybe you were skipping gym or maybe you were skipping a history class — either way, he’d spot you, crook his finger and say something like “get on over here, now,” with that thick Waxahachie accent.

However, under that booming voice and towering frame, Mr. Bohac was nothing but a “gooey teddy bear.” If you weren’t in trouble, he’d love to stop and chat. He liked to hear what was going on in students’ lives.

He wanted to be someone they knew they could go to for help. He valued the trust parents, kids, and teachers placed in him.

“He was the most open hearted and caring person ever,” former student Aidan Fisher said.

for others, a quality that gained him respect in return. Richard Bohac could look intimidating, especially to a middle schooler. But instead of instilling fear into his students, he came off kind until he needed to be stern.

“As strict as he was, he was so fair,” Fisher said.

There was never a student Mr. Bohac cast aside. He could have written detention after detention or suspended students until they became someone else’s responsibility. Instead, he saw an opportunity to build relationships, hold students accountable, and help them learn from their mistakes.

“He had a real, genuine, love for the students,” former McCulloch Intermediate School assistant principal Marcia Pool said. “He wanted to make them the best that they could be.”

His personality showed up in the little routines that became part of everyday life at the middle school. He commanded the cafeteria with his microphone, calling students to report for lunch duty, and rarely went anywhere without his walkie-talkie.

Athletic director Jeremy Gilbert joked that if a trash can were out of place, Bohac would notice. And when dress-up days would roll around, he was always ready with a costume.

He owned a multitude of masks, hats, and costumes. Some of the most memorable were his Darth Vader costume and the women’s cardigan that he mistakenly wore to a holiday party.

No matter how you knew him, you knew Mr. Bohac’s love for his family, his humor, and his compassion for every child who passed through those school doors. His memorial service was crowded with generations of families whose lives he had touched.

“Whatever he did,” Pool said, “whether it was school, his children, his family, his church, he did it 100%.”

PARK CITIES FAMILIES CELEBRATE FREEDOM

ark Cities families enjoyed barbecue, bounce house fun, and games at Williams Park on June 20 during a joyful celebration of Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

At its heart, the second annual event from Black Families of Park Cities was about strengthening community, explained Jeddy Odera Simiyu.

“We truly believe that strong communities are built through meaningful relationships, shared experiences and opportunities to learn from one another,” she said. “Because of this, we connect families, strengthen our neighborhoods and create spaces where everyone feels welcome.”

Guests learned about the holiday’s his-

tory while they sampled treats that ranged from cookout staples such as hot dogs, grilled chicken, and watermelon to less-conventional macarons, doughnuts, and charcuterie.

Avery-Harper Hill, an incoming eighth grader at Highland Park Middle School, and J Brumit, who will start fifth grade at McCulloch Intermediate School in the fall, explained some of the day’s history to the crowd.

The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all enslaved people in Confederate states were free on January 1, 1863. But it took twoand-a-half years for freedom to reach enslaved Texans, Brumit said. Juneteenth is observed on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, Hill continued.

Signs placed around the park told visitors more about the story of Juneteenth and shared inspirational quotes from African American leaders.

“To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try,” stated one quotation from civil rights activist Rosa Parks. “I want you to understand that your first duty is to humanity,” read a quotation from businesswoman and philanthropist Madam C.J. Walker. “I want others to look at us and see that we care not just about ourselves but about others.”

Guests at the event said that Black Families of Park Cities, which Simiyu founded several years ago, has brought families together to connect with and support each other.

“I like how we come together as a community in the Park Cities and embrace the diversity that’s in the community and in the area,” said Kristen Buckhanan, who is in her third year of membership in the group. “Although we live in different parts of the Park Cities, we’re still united.”

Britton, to the celebration. “I love being here with my friends,” said Britton, an incoming fourth grader at Bradfield Elementary School.

She added that she especially enjoyed doing tricks in the bounce house.

Since its creation, Black Families of Park Cities has grown to include programs that support local businesses and bring people together, such as book clubs, community gatherings, health first talks, and conversations with law enforcement. Simiyu said that she would like to expand the group to include members from Preston Hollow as well.

“All of this is to provide a better life for our kids, to make sure they have the foundation that they need to feel supported,” said Tommy Hill, whose wife, Star, led efforts to organize the Juneteenth Celebration. “At the end of the day, it ends up being about them.

But in the process, what’s been so beautiful about this is that we’ve all created a family.”

All Teamwork, No Screens: Highland Park Library Hosts Puzzle Competition

Special Contributor Eight teams gathered at the Highland Park Library on July 11 for a surprisingly strategic showdown.

The challenge? Complete a 300-piece puzzle in a race against the clock.

The prize? A set of handmade miniature trophies and six months of bragging rights.

The jigsaw enthusiasts were vying for a win in the library’s semi-annual Puzzle Competition, a contest that adult services librarian Pamela Skjolsvik said seems to gain momentum with every event.

“It grew out of our mission to create welcoming, low‑barrier activities where adults can connect, collaborate, and have fun,” she explained.

Puzzling is one pastime among

many in an ever-expanding category.

Dubbed “grandma chic,” “vintage,” or just “old-fashioned,” the list of nostalgic hobbies enjoying a modern resurgence includes mahjong, needlework, classic board games, and jigsaw puzzles. Whether enjoyed at home, at school, or at the local watering hole, these wide-ranging activities all have one thing in common: they’re screen-free.

It’s no surprise that parents have long been setting limits on screen time for kids. Many adults, however, are actively seeking out ways to cut down on computer, phone, tablet, and television time themselves.

For Devonshire resident Ann Hallam, attending the Highland Park library’s event represented a return to a childhood favorite.

“I just love doing puzzles,” she said. “When I was growing up, my aunt always had a puzzle out at

her house just a block away. I often worked on puzzles then, and now I also enjoy the competition.”

At precisely 10 a.m., Skjolsvik called “time” and engaged her official clock. All eight of the three-or four-member teams then raced to dump, scatter, and sort their identical copies of a pre-selected boxed puzzle.

To the tune of a classic rock playlist, they then proceeded to employ nimble hand-eye coordination for lightning-fast categorization of pieces by color, pattern, and, of course, the all-important edges. Within 15 minutes, outer frames had appeared on most tables; at the 25-minute mark, the finish line was in sight.

“I see teams getting close,” Skjolsvik said. The announcement drew a collective gasp before the room went still in total concentration. A few more moments passed, and at last, a team of four sent up a

“whoop” of completion.

Sure enough, clocking in at 31 minutes flat, this summer’s winning team set a Puzzle Competition speed record, edging out their nearest competitor by a nose. Hockaday friends Elena Zeballos, Lily McKenna, Liz-

zy NcNeil, and Lizzy’s mother, Elizabeth, each received their miniature golden cup and a hearty handshake from Skjolsvik. The bragging rights will extend through January 2027, when the Highland Park Library Puzzle Competition returns.

In Texas, the end of summer always sneaks up on us. One week you are floating in the pool and the next you are hunting for a missing JENNY DIETSCH shin guard at 7 in the morning while someone is yelling that they cannot find their cleats.

When August rolls around, it’s time to prepare your family and home to head back to school. Make a list of your organizing hot spots, then tackle them one space at a time. Start in the entryway. Clear out everything that doesn’t belong there, and give every family member a hook or basket for their things so nothing ends up on the floor by Thursday.

Papers are their own adventure.

Create a simple inbox where backpacks get emptied every afternoon, permission slips get pulled, and homework comes out before anyone sits down for the night. For artwork and school memories, we swear by our Holding Tank System: one labeled bin per kid where new pieces rotate in as old ones come off the fridge. At year’s end, do one final edit, keep the favorites, and let the rest go.

Do a quick donation pass through kids’ closets. If it did not get worn last year, is worn out, or has been outgrown, let it go. You will thank yourself in October.

If you only have one weekend before school starts, keep it simple: clean out backpacks, gather and clean lunch boxes, and stock the homework station with what your kids will actually reach for.

Organization is not a one-time event. Systems need daily maintenance and they will not be perfect every day. When things fall apart, just reset and start again.

My own kids are in college now and I miss the packed schedules and chaotic dinners. Embrace this season. The systems are just there to help you enjoy it more.

Youngsters Sample Life Behind Bars — And It’s Pretty Tasty

Young University Park residents took a behind-the-scenes tour of city government on June 26, exploring the interior of a jail cell, taking the wheel of a fire engine, and swinging the gavel at a mock city council meeting.

The second through seventh graders were participants in the first-ever YAC Discovery Day, a project from University Park’s Youth Advisory Commission. The high school members of the commission, who volunteer at events and learn about city operations, started planning for the morning of exploration in late April.

“We’re hoping that it empowers them to be advocates in their own community,” explained YAC’s spring project coordinator Campbell Ragan. “Whether that’s in the classroom, standing up for what they believe in, or just knowing what goes on behind the scenes in their daily lives.”

During a tour of the city’s police station, crime prevention officer Andra Iancu walked students through each step of the prisoner booking process, ending with a look inside one of the city’s two jail cells.

“There are rumors, and they’re true,” she told her young guests when she showed them the slot for passing meal trays into the cells.

University Park does serve prisoners meals from neighborhood favorite Bubba’s Cooks Country.

questions about everything from the height of one of the department’s old ladders (75 feet), to whether firefighters get Bubba’s as well (they don’t) and how many pets he’s rescued from trees (two cats, but not any dogs yet).

Eight-year-old Scout Smiley called the city jail and fire department lounge, which featured

cozy recliners, her favorite parts of the tour. She hesitated when asked whether she would want to be a prisoner in University Park.

“The beds don’t look that soft and the toilets are metal, but you do get Bubba’s,” she remarked thoughtfully, before deciding that she would pass.

ended the morning at a mock city council meeting, where they tackled the question of whether the city should create a hypothetical dog park.

Each student was assigned a role in the dog park debate, with some serving as city staffers, two as mayor, and others as residents who either favored or opposed the

Joint mayors 9-year-old Stella Helt and 10-year-old Pierce Bowen called taking the helm of the city the highlight of their mornings.

“It felt cool to be the leaders for one day,” Helt said.

University Park’s special projects coordinator Amanda Hartwick, who helps guide the Youth Advisory Commission, explained that the high schoolers had taken ownership of the project and responsibility for the extensive planning involved.

“I think they did a tremendous job,” she said. “We’re proud of them.”

Ex-SMU Pom Captain Dances Into Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Auditions

A dream that was years in the making came true this June for former SMU Pom Team captain Ashley Pitts when she qualified for the final round of auditions for the elite Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, who are featured in the hit Netflix series America’s Sweethearts.

“When I moved to Dallas, I kind of saw that dream might actually be possible,” said Pitts, who came to the Hilltop from Alabama. “It was always kind of in the back of my head like, ‘I’m here in Dallas, I can train, I can make more connections and see if this dream is something that is attainable and is something that I would actually want to do.’”

Pitts served on SMU’s pom team for four years, including as senior captain of the team for 2025-2026. She began preparing for the physically and mentally draining Cowboys Cheerleader audition process during her sophomore year and trained more intensely during her junior year.

“That was just such a privilege to be able to take amazing prep classes and train with some of the best dance teachers, choreographers, and alongside such other great dancers that are reaching for the same dream as you,” Pitts said.

Pitts drew on the performance experience she gained on the Hilltop to help reach her longtime goal. Her SMU Pom coach helped perfect her routine for the

first round of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders auditions. That performance utilized familiar sequences and moves Pitts had used to cheer on the Mustangs.

Pitts also received support from former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders with Hilltop connections, including Carrie Teller, the Director of Spirit Groups at SMU, who was a member of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders from 1992 to 1995, and performed in Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII. “When I submitted the first round, I was really just proud of myself and just like, ‘you know, I’m chasing this dream, I’m putting it out here, and no matter the outcome, I put in a lot of work, I’ve trained, I’ve made great memories, I’ve grown so much,’” Pitts said.

“Having that attitude helped me in the waiting process because it’s so nerve-racking.”

After completing the first round of auditions, Pitts performed onstage during a live second round audition in April, a process she described as “surreal.” Pitts had support from some teammates and coaches, who cheered her on from the Dallas audience. Cowboys Cheerleaders staff and veterans also helped make the experience comfortable and positive.

“It was unlike anything I had ever done before,” Pitts said. “I really enjoyed getting to dance onstage again. I definitely missed that a little bit in college because that’s kind of what I grew up doing, competing on a stage.”

While Pitts didn’t make the cut at the closed final auditions this year, she plans to continue training to audition for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders again next year.

Pitts said she plans to remain in Dallas after graduating from SMU with a B.A. in Public Relations and Strategic Communications.

“I have always danced growing up, and I actually did mostly competition, so I thought that I wanted to do a dance major in college.

I had a change of pathway, and did pom in-

stead, and I loved it,” she said. “I have not looked back, no regrets. It’s been the most amazing experience of my life.”

Park Cities residents who’ve followed the DCC auditions may also recognize 2026 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Rookie Candidate Kaycee Nieuwendyk, who attended training camp but ultimately didn’t make the 2026-2027 squad. Nieuwendyk is a former member of Highland Park High School’s Highland Belles drill squad.

BELOVED ARMSTRONG GARDEN TEACHER RETIRES AFTER 10+ YEARS

J

ana Beth Eidson, one of Highland Park ISD’s original garden teachers, retired this year after planting the seeds of learning for countless students.

The Master Gardener and former teacher established the district’s first garden program at Armstrong Elementary School around 2013 with fellow Master Gardener Caroline Trotman.

The roots of Eidson’s interest in gardening date from her own childhood. She grew up in South Texas in a family of farmers. Her teaching skills go back nearly as far.

Eidson, who has a degree in special education, moved to Dallas after college and married former Dallas Cowboys player Jim Eidson, who was a member of the Cowboys’ Super Bowl XII championship team.

The couple moved to the Park Cities, where they raised their children and Eidson became an avid school volunteer.

Armstrong Elementary’s principal invited Eidson to help start the school’s garden program shortly after she completed her Master Gardener training. Eidson and fellow

Master Gardener Trotman developed plans based on Junior Master Gardener material. But if they didn’t think the curriculum fit their group of young horticulturists, they wrote lessons of their own.

When students gathered for gardening each week, the Master Gardeners taught subjects such as life science and skills including how to grow edible crops.

Tasting became one of the most popular parts of the garden program.

“They wanted to eat kale, they wanted to eat whatever they were growing,” Eidson said.

As Armstrong’s garden program blossomed, its physical space grew as well. The school gave the garden the gift of an expanded footprint for its tenth anniversary.

“It’s just been a joy to watch it develop,” Eidson said. “We morphed into teaching a bird unit, teaching a butterfly unit, teaching propagation, teaching all these things, and such bright children. They were absorbing it, wanting to do it at home, and asking for seeds to take home.”

or organization funds a gardener to help them flourish.

“The power of yes turned into the contagiousness of everybody wanting a garden, so they raised their money independent of us to have their garden,” Eidson said.

After more than a decade of teaching gardening at Armstrong, Eidson doesn’t intend to stop educating during her retirement. She plans to spend time with her three grandchildren and teach them about gardening.

The seeds she planted at Armstrong will continue to grow. Elizabeth Moundas, a volunteer at Armstrong who earned her Master Gardener certification last year, will help the school’s gardening program bloom for years to come.

“I just feel so lucky and blessed to be able to inherit her knowledge,” Moundas said. “And just seeing how she interacts with the kids and how she teaches was so helpful to me.”

A History of Restrictions When Northway sold land for Boone Elementary to HPISD in 2016, it recorded a deed restriction prohibiting Boone from operating a preschool while its Day School operated next door.

In 2017, Northway granted one exception: a special education classroom required by federal law. In 2025, in our opinion due to pending legislation, it granted a second exception for HPISD employees’ children.

The prohibition remains in force. As of June 23, 2026, 20 children sat on Boone’s preschool waitlist because of it.

In our opinion, Northway’s own documents show it believed competition between the two schools was harmful, a belief that does not disappear because the Day School is closing.

The deed also bars Boone from operating middle school grades; the proposed permit would allow Compass to operate through eighth grade. Northway is now asking the city to approve a school on the same parcel, overlapping with Boone at every grade it serves, including preschool, while that restriction remains in place.

Removing the restriction would not make the two schools compatible. Nine years of legal protection against Boone proves the conflict exists.

Under Dallas Development Code §51A-4.219, the City Council cannot legally grant a Special Use Permit (SUP) unless it finds the proposed use promotes the welfare of the adjacent property, Boone Elemen-

tary. Northway must prove the legal standard has been met.

Who Owns the SUP The SUP is requested by Northway. Compass is a proposed occupant. As confirmed by the Northway zoning representative: “Zoning runs with the land, not the tenant. The SUP will remain in effect for the period granted.” If Compass relocates, another school could occupy the parcel under the same permit without community notification or a new compatibility review. We are not evaluating Compass specifically, but what the city is being asked to permit on this parcel for the future.

Traffic Reality The traffic concern deser ves a real answer. Under §51A-4.219(a)(3)(C), the Commission must find the use will not be detrimental to public health, safety, or general welfare.

A licensed engineer documented eight deficiencies in the applicant’s initial Traffic Management Plan. The neighborhood requested a 45-minute stagger to let Boone’s students clear before Compass parents arrive. On July 1, HPISD Superintendent Mike Rockwood asked the Mayor and Council for a 30-minute stagger between dismissals. The applicant’s plan, dated June 24, was filed July 8 with the same 15-minute stagger the Superintendent called insufficient.

No hearing has been set.

What comes next will affect Boone and this neighborhood for years to come.

T

he Dallas restaurant scene rarely sits still.

And if Preston Hollow and Park Cities diners have learned anything in recent years, it’s this: Don’t get too attached to a favorite table.

Few departures hit regulars harder than the closing of Sevy’s Grill on June 27. For nearly three decades, the staff at the Preston Road staple had sought to create a “home away from home” for guests. Sevy’s was a place where lunches stretched longer than planned, celebrations felt familiar, and servers knew the usual order.

Eight staff members worked at the restaurant for all of its 29 years, Severson said.

“To me, our secret sauce is being guest centric,” the restaurateur said as the closing date approached. “Our servers have been doing well because so much business has been coming in to support us and tell me their Sevy stories.”

In rising-rent retail corridors, expansion and turnover happen side by side, and local restaurants are being outbid. Empty space rarely stays vacant for long.

“What we’re facing is the rapid increase in rent, especially in this area,” Severson said. “I don’t want to jack our prices up or open seven

days a week, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which you almost have to do — because I care about our staff.”

Another longtime community favorite, Cafe Brazil, is facing a move as SMU considers additional expansion east of U.S. 75 to allow for a new law school.

Cafe Brazil’s management says the eatery is “part of the SMU community.” The restaurant’s staff remains committed to serving patrons and it has no immediate plans to move.

Casa Brasa, which replaced Nick & Sam’s at its former Preston Commons location, has become the new neighborhood watering hole, while a few miles away, Joseph Palladino, who helped build Nick & Sam’s into a Dallas fixture, recently opened his signature spot at

Four Tips for Picking Out the Perfect Lampshade

Lately, it’s becoming more popular to use trim on shades again. This lampshade has a tassel trim on the bottom edge and a green ribbon along the top. Although it’s a standard shade, the finishing touches make it feel more custom. MICHAEL HUNTER WITH DESIGN BY MARGARET CHAMBERS

Swapping old lampshades out with ne w ones is a quick and inexpensive way M A R G A R E T to refresh C H A M B E R S your room.

However, it’s important to learn which lampshade shapes, materials, colors, and sizes will look best with your lamp base before you upgrade.

1. Make Careful Measurements Lampshade Height: • Needs to measure about three-quarters of the base height.

• With an incandescent bulb, leave two-to-three inches between the shade and bulb to

allow heat to disperse (LEDs give off almost no heat).

Lampshade Width: • Should ideally be double the base width.

• Your shade needs to cover up the light switch and harp.

• For floor lamps, the lampshade looks best when its diameter is 18 inches or more.

2. Pick a Complementary Shape for Your Base Square lampshades go well with square bases, and rounded shades can be paired with either rounded or hexagonal bases. “Empire style” is the term for lampshades with that classic conical shape. Although rounded lampshades are more popular, square shades conserve table or floor space because they can be pushed closer to the wall.

3. Choose Material and Translucency Parchment is a good choice for contemporary and modern rooms because of its minimalist, solid-color look. For traditional and classical rooms, I recommend silk, linen, or cotton lampshades with a pleated effect.

Linen shades look great in either solid colors or prints.

Are you planning on using your lamp to add more ambient lighting, create a reading corner, or highlight a focal point? In any of these cases, choose a translucent lampshade to let light filter through. Feel free to use a darker, thicker lampshade material if your lamp is purely decorative and is in a well-lit area.

4. Use Colors and Patterns That Contrast With Your Lamp Base If your base has a unique shape, make sure to choose a simple shade so that you don’t draw attention away from the base. Simple bases call for lampshades with interesting colors or patterns. Since lampshades have less of an impact on the room than curtains or upholstery do, you have more leeway to use striking colors or patterns on them.

When I’m working with an interior design client, I take their original lamp with me when I shop. Having the original helps me find the perfect new lampshade color and material while seeing how the lampshade will transform. Updating lampshades can seem intimidating at first, but don’t be discouraged. You’ll be amazed at what a difference a new shade can make.

HP’s Floyd wins national title, commits to Texas

I

n less than a month, Highland Park’s volleyball team will begin defending its 2025 Class 5A Division I state title.

But summer has not provided much time off for one of HP’s biggest stars on the court. The past few months have been a whirlwind for reigning District 12-5A MVP Sarah Floyd.

In addition to winning a club national championship with Texas Advantage Volleyball and competing for Team USA’s 2026 U19 Women’s National Team in Costa Rica, Floyd finalized her collegiate intentions. When her time with the Scots is complete, she has committed to play for the University of Texas.

Floyd will look to bring her winning pedigree from club and high school volleyball to a storied Longhorns program that has won five national championships and is coming off a berth in the regional finals in 2025.

“I’m so excited,” Floyd said.

“When you look at the tradition there and the winning they’ve done and the amount of players they’ve had that have been All-Americans and Olympians, it’s just an amazing program.

“They really have a great culture, but it’s the people that really made me want to be there.

From my first visit there during college camps, and getting to make another visit and getting to know everyone more, I knew

that was where I wanted to go.”

Floyd noted she chose Texas over Wisconsin, as well as other programs she considered.

“I really loved Madison,

but it was just something about Texas,” she said. “Now that I’ve made my decision, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I’m ready to just

focus on my senior season.”

Floyd will enter her final campaign with the Scots as an even better version of herself following a productive summer.

As noted, Floyd’s inclusion on the national team earned her not only a trip to San Jose, Costa Rica, but also multiple weeks of training with the nation’s top athletes and coaches at Team USA’s facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Floyd is also coming off a first-place performance with TAV U16 Black at the 2026 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“It was a great feeling,” Floyd said. “We came really close last year and finished second, so to come out and get first this year, I’m so proud of everyone.”

Floyd, who was named to the all-tournament team, credited camaraderie and aggression for TAV ’s success.

“I think the biggest difference this year was our chemistry,” she said. “We were all on the same page, we were really serving aggressively and dictating points, and our defense was on point.”

The future Longhorn believes her experience this summer will translate to the high school level when the Scots take the court in August.

“I kind of played all around last year, but I think this summer is going to really help me out as a hitter and to be a bigger presence on the back row,” she said.

“I can’t wait to get back out there with my teammates. Of course we would love to repeat as state champs, but our first goal is to go out to the Hawaii tournament and win it all this time.”

Moore departs Hillcrest for HP

Highland Park’s baseball team has its man.

The Scots have named Ashley Moore as their new head coach to replace Travis Yoder, who recently resigned from his post following 13 years manning the dugout.

Moore arrives from Dallas Hillcrest, where he has served as the head coach for the past 13 seasons. Moore picked up his 300th career victory during the 2026 campaign.

That season saw the Panthers go unbeaten en route to the District 13-5A title before advancing to the area round of the playoffs and finishing with a 30-5 record overall.

Moore noted that the chance to coach a storied program such as Highland Park was too enticing to pass up.

“It’s a great opportunity for me,” he said.

“They showed some interest in me and the feeling was mutual. I was fortunate enough to get through the first round to the final cuts and I was grateful to even be considered. “(HP athletic director Jeremy) Gilbert was

great to work with through the whole process … the whole staff and community I have met with and spoke with have been great.”

Moore added that while he is more than excited to coach the Scots, it wasn’t easy saying goodbye to a Hillcrest program he has led for over a decade and turned into a perennial playoff team.

“I had a chance to meet with the parents and players at Hillcrest (Tuesday) night,” he said. “It went well. They were very supportive and understanding of my decision. And I know they’re going to continue to be a great program moving forward. They’re great kids and it’s a great community and I’m so thankful for my time there. They’ve been an extended family to me.”

Moore now takes over an HP team that also claimed a district title in 2026 and reached the second round of the postseason.

For a Park Cities Teen, Squash is Not a Garden-Variety Sport

It seems like Maddie Choi has always carried a racquet or paddle in her hand. Tennis, pickleball, even table tennis — she’s fond of them all.

But the Park Cities teenager didn’t find her true passion until she tried squash, a niche sport in which she’s now ranked in the top 100 in the country in her age group.

Choi’s enthusiasm extends off the court and into Rally for Squash, a nonprofit she started last summer aimed at growing the sport’s popularity, most notably for her generation.

“Squash is really not that accessible here in Dallas, especially for younger kids who want to try out the sport — and especially for girls, because this sport is very male-dominant,” said Choi, who just finished her sophomore year at Hockaday. “Squash resources here are very limited.

Not everyone has the opportunity to travel every weekend to tournaments. I started this so I could give younger kids the opportunity to see what the sport is like.”

longer and thinner than those for tennis. The sport, which originated overseas more than a century ago, will be featured at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which could help boost its popularity.

Choi’s first introduction came in seventh grade, and she was instantly hooked by the combination of speed and strategy.

“I didn’t even know this sport

existed. It’s super fast-paced and it’s so technically difficult. The whole motion of the swing is different,” she said. “It’s really intense when you’re moving so fast in a tiny box.”

Choi trains frequently at a club in Houston where some of the best players in the country are based. She’s played as far away as Egypt, and earlier this year participated in the British

Junior Open.

Competition closer to home is scarce, and that’s what Choi hopes to rectify through Rally for Squash. The group has conducted clinics at local recreation centers, held a fundraiser for kids in the Houston area, and given community presentations on the sport’s history and rules.

The entire leadership team consists of high school students

looking to leverage the value of peer role models or mentors.

Choi is particularly focused on creating opportunities for young girls.

“I saw that around me, it was really just guys that I had to play with. It was difficult to adapt,” Choi said. “They can see other people who are closer to their own age, so the younger generation can be inspired.”

he Park Cities celebrated America’s milestone birthday during a parade filled with patriotism, music, and candy galore.

Flags waved from red, white, and blue adorned floats, necklace-clad children pedaled the parade, and Highland Park High School athletes kept onlookers cool by enthusiastically spraying water guns. The crowd that rang in America’s 250th year spilled off sidewalks and narrowed streets along the parade route.

The birthday bash continued once floats arrived in Centennial Park, where celebrants bounced, climbed, spun, and enjoyed treats

such as cupcakes, watermelon, soft serve, and iced coffee.

2026 was also a historic year for the Rotary Club of Park Cities.

President Mark Kashar announced that the club had met its goal of providing 3 million meals in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank. He said that the club had raised that goal to 5 million meals.

Speakers in Centennial Park both reflected on the country’s values and remembered with compassion the lives lost in last year’s devastating Hill Country floods. The flood’s victims included nine young girls from the area: Lila Bonner, Hadley Hanna, Blair Harber, Brooke Harber, Janie Hunt, Hanna Lawrence,

maginations will flourish this fall during the Nasher Sculpture Center’s 2026 Great Create, an annual family-friendly fundraiser and interactive event that transforms the Nasher Garden into a hands-on, art-filled space for kids and families.

During the event on Sunday, Oct. 25, families will engage in creative projects led by Texas artists while enjoying live entertainment, kid-friendly food, and the museum’s sculpture collection.

The Great Create is vastly different from your typical society gala, event chair Tori Mulford explained as we talked in her University Park home.

“It’s not about who is there and what are they wearing,” she joked. “That’s not why we do this. If you’re standing still for photos, you’re doing something wrong.

This is getting hands-on. It’s probably my favorite day of the year.”

The event inspires creativity for more than a single afternoon. It raises funds to support the Nasher Sculpture Center’s education programs, which benefit thousands of students and families all year long.

The Great Create’s theme this year is midcentury modern. Mulford described its range of activities as including “a little bit of everything” — from crafts, video, and ceramics to experiences from Camp Crafty, the creative party company founded by Ursuline Academy graduate Lilly Watson.

“I feel like The Great Create is we’re all kind of in it together,” Mulford said.

“It just feels very authentic and special because it’s actually casual, actually fun.”

The Conversations That Changed My Summer

I’ve always thought August feels more like New Year’s than January.

For families, this is when life really resets.

This year, August feels a little different in our house.

My daughter, Alexis, is beginning her senior year of college, and my son, Blake, is starting his senior year at Highland Park High School. As every parent who’s been there knows, those words are

enough to make you pause.

Where did the time go?

As I looked ahead to Blake’s final lacrosse season and Alexis’ last year of college, it struck me that while they’re preparing for what’s next, maybe it’s okay for me to think about what’s next, too.

That thought shaped my summer in an unexpected way.

Instead of filling every free moment with projects, I started making time for people. I reached out to friends I’d been saying “Let’s get together soon!” to for far too long.

One afternoon I listened to someone describe what it was like to fly fighter jets. Another day, I met a woman who turned her creative vision into a luxury brand.

There were conversations with jour-

nalists, restaurant owners, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and neighbors whose life experiences couldn’t have been more different from my own.

What amazed me wasn’t what they did for a living. It was how much I learned simply by listening.

Every conversation offered a new perspective, a fresh idea, or a reminder that everyone has a story worth hearing if we’re willing to ask.

Somewhere along the way, curiosity became one of the greatest gifts of my summer.

It also reminded me how easy it is to stay in our routines. Between football games, school events, work, and family life, it’s easy to spend time with the same people every week without even realizing it.

The live entertainment will feature Audrey Schott, whose Backyard Music Classes foster a love of music in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years old. Schott also offers a piano fundamentals summer program for young elementary schoolers.

The Great Create’s fundraising so far this year has exceeded expectations, Mulford said. And many attendees will continue to give back by donating tickets to art teachers and others who will appreciate and enjoy the afternoon.

Mulford would love to see The Great Create grow beyond the Nasher Sculpture Center.

“I think the fact that children can participate in the volunteering experience is unique,” she observed. “Most times when we go to a fundraiser, it’s just this kind of transactional situation. So, this is great, because it’s the whole family doing something together and building positive memories.”

Before we know it, another school year has come and gone.

The more conversations I had, the more I realized that what makes our community so special isn’t just our schools or traditions. It’s the remarkable people who quietly make this place what it is every day.

As we head into another school year, I’m looking forward to everything that makes August special.

But I’m also challenging myself to leave room for something new. A new friendship. A new lunch date.

A new conversation. A little more curiosity.

Maybe that’s why August has always felt like New Year’s to me.

It’s the season when our kids begin a new chapter.

Maybe it’s a reminder that we

can begin new chapters, too.

Because no matter what season of life we’re in, I don’t think we ever finish growing. Sometimes all it takes is saying yes to a conversation you almost didn’t have.

And if this summer has taught me anything, it’s that some of life’s best opportunities don’t begin with a big plan.

Sometimes, they begin with a simple cup of coffee.

Hot late-summer days make me crave the sunny, fresh flavor of lemons. Whether it’s a refreshing glass of homemade lemonade, lemony grilled chicken, or a slice of lemon pie, this bright-yellow citrus fruit and summertime go perfectly together.

So, I grabbed a large lemon from the fridge, gathered everything I needed from the pantry, added butter and an egg, and the result was Lemon Almond Cookies garnished with a swirl of buttercream frosting and yellow sprinkles.

The beauty of these lemon cookies is their versatility. The amount of lemon zest and juice is easily adjusted depending on how much lemon flavor you prefer, and they are equally delicious with or without the frosting. If desired, simply sprinkle a little granulated sugar on the cookies while they’re still warm from the oven, or garnish the frosting with fresh lemon zest instead of yellow sprinkles. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and position rack in center of oven. In the large bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter, brown sugar, and lemon zest until well combined. Add egg, lemon juice, and vanilla, beating until the mixture is light and creamy.

In a medium bowl, stir together almond flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda until they are well blended.

Stir the flour mixture into the creamed mixture to form a soft dough. Spoon small teaspoons of dough onto greased cookie sheets, dip your finger in water, and gently flatten each cookie to ¼-inch thickness.

Cookies spread a lot while baking, so allow plenty of room between cookies. Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until the cookies are set. They will rise, then flatten slightly and will be very soft, but do not overbake. Remove from the oven, cool 1 minute, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

If desired, sprinkle lightly with sugar while the cookies are warm, or spread with a swirl of buttercream frosting and garnish with sprinkles once they are completely cool.

Buttercream Frosting: In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine 2 tablespoons softened, unsalted butter, 2 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar, dash of salt, 3 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk, and ½ teaspoon vanilla. Beat until smooth and creamy.

Yield: 30 to 34 cookies
