/ Pastors Letter Dear PCJH Family, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness.” ~ Lamentations 3:22-23 When we reflect on 2022, the first thought that comes to mind is “great is God’s faithfulness.” We have seen God’s faithfulness in the decline of the Covid virus which was so damaging to our community. Thankfully we were able to transition back to in-person worship, small groups, youth groups, classes and fellowship gatherings. After the summer’s pause of children’s Sunday school, it was refreshing to welcome back the little ones and their families. This fall we saw God’s faithfulness in the start up of our Wednesday Community Dinners and the launching of our Discipleship Groups. Due to wise leadership and careful planning, we were able to replace our building with a new roof, without any extra costs to the congregation. We continually seek to find new ways in which our facility can be used for God’s mission and purposes.

As well, God has been faithful through the many staff transitions at PCJH. We had to say goodbye to Liz Collins and Dylan Wade, who so lovingly served in our youth and children’s ministries. Plus, PCJH said good-bye to one of our Little Lambs teacher/assistant, Heather Martin, and our long-term nursery coordinator, Darla Jackson, both moved away from Jackson. Each staff member has been a beautiful gift to our church and we give thanks to Christ for them. Thankfully, PCJH was blessed with some amazing additions to the staff: Aaron Nydam and Preston Gordon, Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinators; Megan Walker, Youth and Young Adult Ministry Coordinator; and Brian Bultema as Church Administrator.

God’s faithfulness has been evident in our personal lives as well. Ben was able to travel to the Holy Land with a dynamic peacemaking cohort called The Telos Group where they explored the work of reconciliation as it relates to the Israel/Palestine conflict. He remains active in his pastor’s National Prayer Covenant Group, a source of support, strength and wisdom. Tammy was blessed to lead a PCJH group on a pilgrimage to

Israel/Palestine - a life-changing experience for all. She continues to pursue her Doctor of Ministry degree in Reformed Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh. She also serves on the board of the Fellowship Community and on the board of Young LIfe Jackson Hole.

Knowing God’s faithfulness is ever present, we look forward to 2023 with hope and anticipation of all that God will do and is doing in our midst. We are blessed with a church that has financial health, dedicated leadership, and a caring community. We are humbled and grateful to serve as your pastors. n worship the faithful offer themselves to God and are equipped for God’s service in the world.

We were inspired by thoughtful sermons and beautiful music throughout the year.

We hosted three Christmas Eve services in two locations and served nearly 700 in celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. The Christmas pageant in mid-December engaged our children, youth and families together with the choir and special musicians.

Special Sundays throughout the year included Prayer Sunday, Pajama Sunday, and Bring a Friend to Worship. Thanks to church staff and lead volunteer on technical support, Ken Blount, we are able to continue offering live-streamed services each week at 10:15 am and the recorded sermons afterwards via our YouTube page.

With the help of volunteer George Scarlett, we were able to replace the scripture on the walls of both the Chapel and the Sanctuary.

T

he PCJH Congregational Life team had a full lineup of activity in 2022. The PCJH cross country ski group kicked off in January, ably led by Steve and Connie Swan, along with their son Gannett. The Swan’s took us to some beautiful and amazing places for several Sundays, where we enjoyed devotion, fellowship and recreation in God’s amazing creation.

On Easter Sunday, in April, we placed Easter lilies in the sanctuary in honor or memory of a loved one. On Mother’s Day, the Congregational Life Team passed out flowers and ice cream and fruit treats to our mothers in celebration of all that they do! Likewise, we honored our fathers in June with ice cream treats following worship.

Several members and families from PCJH participated in the annual Jackson Fourth of July Parade. A fantastic time was had by all as we rode bikes, blew bubbles from the church van, threw candy and were led in patriotic song

along the way by our own Peter Keenan!

September saw the return of an in-person Old Bill’s Fun Run where a group from PCJH participated in the awesome turnout, and later in September we held an allchurch potluck which was a truly meaningful time of enjoying food and fellowship.

In November, Congregational Life led the greening of the church following the 10:15 service. Young and old alike enjoyed the decorating of our beautiful church home for Advent season and also enjoyed pizza and ice-cream sandwiches! In December, Chef Caroline taught an Advent baking class in our kitchen where about 25 of us learned the nuances of baking at high altitude while partaking in Christmas fellowship! 2022 was a great year in the life of our church family, as our numbers grow and we are continually overwhelmed by God’s faithfulness, goodness and grace to the congregation of PCJH.

CJH Kids meets on Sundays to worship and remember God, together! Children’s ministry in 2022 saw many leadership transitions. We said goodbye to Dylan Wade as our Coordinator, Aaron Nydam served to lead JOY Summer Camp, and Preston Gordon joined us in the fall as an interim coordinator. Amidst all of the change, we were grateful to experience God’s provision and ongoing work among our kids.

JOY Summer Camp was back in full swing. A strong staff of high school and young-adult counselors facilitated six weeks of faith-based experiences for local children. Each week was framed around a Fruit of the Spirit. In honor of Yvonne Henze, the middle school group was named the Cranes (her favorite bird). The kids learned about Yvonne and how she embodied the Fruits of the Spirit throughout her time with us.

This fall, we relaunched children and youth ministries with an exciting kickoff BBQ. Through the fall we saw a healthy return of children to our Sunday morning gathering, averaging 16 kids each week, and a renewing of our serving team. We also started a new curriculum that explores God’s big story in Scripture each week. In October, we had a special costume day and hosted “Trunk or Treat” in the parking lot, and in Advent we celebrated Christ’s coming with a variety of crafts, cookies, and the beautiful Christmas pageant: Light of the World.

his was a year of transition. The overseer of this dept changed from Liz to Megan, and students went through changes. The four months that I (Megan) have been here full time have been experimental. I have kept the same core program (Breakfast Club) that was very successful and added a High School option. I tried more scheduled events, instead of more spur of the moment hang-outs.

Numbers have fluctuated when it comes to events.

scent was eager to get back into study as a Christian community again. The fall was a good time of connection to catch up and get reacquainted both for Megan and with one another.

iving into our mission at PCJH, our adult ministries provide a wide range of opportunities for spiritual growth. We desire to be an equipping church, alive to the Gospel and agents of transformation.

One highlight was the launching of our new Discipleship Path in partnership with Whitworth University.

This two-year guided process has allowed small groups to explore the foundations of discipleship. Four new groups, with close to 50 people involved, met weekly for study, conversation, and practical spiritual exercises. Dr. Jerry Sittser, professor emeritus of theology and senior fellow at Whitworth University, visited, taught and preached to initiate the new Path.

The PCJH Deacons are people who love to care and support the congregation in acts of compassion and service. Wherever there is a particular need, they step in to help. Their passion is for PCJH to be a loving community of faith eager to show kindness and mercy.

Examples of service include delivering meals to people in need, organizing special projects to help our community, welcoming the visitor, comforting the grieving, and reaching out to the sick and hospitalized.

2022 HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING: • Providing medical transportation for people who could not drive.

• Making caring phone calls to members of the congregation

• Partnering with the worship team to help meet newcomers at the 7 Minute Party after worship services • Offering over $10,000 for emergency financial assistance • Providing the Christmas Angel Tree which helped local children have a special Christmas.

his year has been a year of re-engagement for the Church Administration team. Many returning PCJH traditions – including the Rummage Sale, in-person Wednesday Dinners, potlucks and social events – all made this year feel filled with life and activity. A more predictable environment has meant more people in Sunday worship. All this requires the organizing direction of the Administration Team!

More normalcy has meant more need for members of our congregation willing to serve in a wide range of volunteer roles—from finding Sunday greeters, to Scripture readers, to new musicians, to those willing to serve on the wide variety of committees has kept our congregation fully engaged.

An Administration Team focus in 2022 has been utilizing Planning Center as our database for all members, frequent attenders, and visitors. We now

have over 1,800 people in Planning Center! This tool helps us understand who comes through the PCJH doors, and lets those active in the Church Center app better become engaged in life at PCJH. The church building has been a major community resource throughout 2022. Our building rentals have been up significantly for events like birthday parties, quinceañeras, Jackson Hole Chorale concerts, and special events for other Jackson Hole non-profits.

This year also marked the 7-year anniversary of Centro de Vida and seven years of renting the Genesis Room to their growing congregation.

Lastly, we’ve continued to have robust communications strategy with quarterly Pinnacle newsletters sent out to over 400 homes, weekly Peak at the Week email blasts, biannual stewardship campaign mailers and more throughout the year.

new roof over our heads (about two-thirds of the 28,000 square-foot roof) in 2022 is a major achievement to address years of problems with ice-damming and leaking. Thanks to the foresight of elders twenty years ago, a roof reserve fund was built up for a project that was completed in the fall.

The Buildings and Grounds Ministry at PCJH accomplished other projects including replacing two 20-year-old furnaces, sealcoating and re-striping the parking lot, new floor coverings in Genesis, the classroom hallway and the entry at the west end of the church. Stewardship of buildings, grounds, and vehicles is a high priority for the congregation and staff and once again most evident by the amount of volunteer time and staff hours devoted to clean-up, repairs, and general cleaning. The original church

building (sanctuary, lobby, offices) is 22 years old and the addition (chapel, Hayden Hall, kitchen,classrooms) is 13 years old. Systems, as well as furniture, fixtures and finishes are showing their age, yet in an expected way. Issues with HVAC systems are no longer problematic given a reliable service contract in place. Lighting systems in the Sanctuary continue to be a challenge, however we are blessed to have a reliable electrician addressing troubleshooting and repairs.

Our beautiful commercial kitchen continues to be very popular in providing opportunities to provide Wednesday dinners and serve the community.

CJH is blessed with a dedicated staff who continue the outreach and work of our church in and for our community.

In 2022, we were not immune to the labor issues in Teton County. Due to the high cost of housing, both JOY and Little Lambs were understaffed from what we had planned. We can be proud of all of our staff for stepping up, taking on a little extra and making sure that all of the campers/students received the full experience.

Several long-time PCJH staff members (Dylan Wade, Liz Collins, Heather Martin, and Darla Jackson) were called on to other ministries. While we dearly miss them all, God’s faithfulness has been evident with several new additions to fulltime staff positions, including Megan Walker (Youth and Young Adult Coordinator), Preston Gordon (Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator),

and Brian Bultema (Church Administrator). The new staff team is exceptionally strong and dedicated to Christ and PCJH. The personnel team continues its oversight of performance reviews, job descriptions, hiring and access to professional, job-related education. We were more directly involved in changes to the PCJH employee manual and evaluating equitable compensation for all of our staff. It has been a blessing to us to see God’s work carried out by our Spirit-filled staff.

n 2022, members and friends of PCJH again gave so very generously of their time, treasure and talent. The PCJH Stewardship Team is so very grateful to all who shared God’s blessings so that the church could carry on and expand its many ministries! With the worst of the pandemic behind us, 2022 marked a time of re-engagement for PCJH as a Christian community. Wednesday dinners came back in person, with growing attendance. In person and livestreamed worship continued, along with Bible studies, small groups and youth and young adult ministries. Little Lambs and Joy Summer Camp vibrantly served our younger children, and Middle School and High School devotional breakfasts reached our older ones. The Big Five event provided warm winter clothes to youth in the Jackson community, and PCJH continued to support One22 and the JH Food Cupboard. The summer and year-end stewardship campaigns helped spread out giving throughout the year, which is so helpful for cash-flow and planning purposes. Through our budgeting process we have carefully allocated resources across departments to ensure we are funded for the ministry and mission to which God has called us through PCJH. • We have no debt, a balanced budget, and funding for ongoing and future ministry.

• The replacement of about 80% of the church roof was completed in 2022 and financed entirely with our accumulated roof reserve.

• We started a rainy-day fund six years ago to ensure that our ministry and mission continues despite unforeseen crises. We have saved $470,923 with a goal of about six months of covered operating expenses.

By God’s grace, and yours, our tithes and offerings for 2022 very nearly reached our operating goal, falling short by just $23,000. However,

our net operating expenses for the year came in under budget, primarily the result of staffing shortages. Taken together, we ended the year with a $60,730 operating surplus. Session decided to allocate the surplus as follows: $6,073 to future mission projects, $21,116 to the buildings and grounds maintenance reserve; $5,000 to rebuild the roof reserve; 5,000 to the Deacons’ fund; $13,541 to the employee housing reserve; and $10,000 to cover the cost of future interns.

In 2022 we were able to add another $25,000 to the PCJH Endowment Fund.

Our goal is to continue to have the financial strength to do whatever ministry the Lord calls us to do in order to see lives being transformed in Jesus Christ.
