/ Pastors Letter Dear PCJH Family, It’s been another year together as we live out our mission to be a community, rooted in Christ, reaching out in love. We hope you have seen your life and the lives of others being transformed in Jesus Christ. We have been blessed to have experienced God’s transforming power in our personal lives in 2021 as we served as your pastors. We began 2021 with great hope that things would start to get back to normal. Our hopes were challenged by the politics in our nation being more divisive than most can remember and a pandemic that would not go away despite our best efforts as a nation and community to get vaccinated and practice healthy habits. Plus, due to the Delta and Omicron variants we worshiped together in masks for most of the year. Despite these challenges, we are so proud of how our congregation persevered and practiced being people of faith, hope and love. You have truly been the light of Christ in our world through the ways in which you have generously served God and neighbor through your time, talent and treasure. It is quite remarkable to witness all the amazing things God has done in and through PCJH this year. We hope you enjoy this annual report as we reflect on the faithfulness of God not only in 2021 but as we celebrated these past 25 years of being a chartered church in the PCUSA. We want to share with you some ways in which we grew and learned as your pastors this past year through our own unique experiences of professional development. Tammy was blessed to have received her much deserved sabbatical in 2021. While on sabbatical she began her Doctorate of Ministry in Reformed Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; traveled to Europe to explore, visit a missionary friend, and learn more about Saint Augustine. In the states, she enjoyed quality time with family, friends, and spiritual mentors in her life. Ben was invited to join a National Prayer Covenant Group of Presbyterian Pastors across America. His prayer covenant group has already been a source of strength, community and wisdom. Ben was also invited

to join World Vision’s first Peak to Peak Challenge in GTNP. 25 pastors from across the country summited two peaks in the Tetons, hiking 32 miles in two days to raise money and awareness for World Vision’s Chosen Child Sponsorship Ministry to help the world’s most vulnerable children. Ben also joined the Telos Group’s Peacemaking Cohort with pastors from around the U.S. as they explored the work of reconciliation as it relates to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and the racial conflicts in the U.S. past and present. E
very Sunday we gather as the Body of Christ to worship God, pray, encourage one another, and study God’s word. We began 2021 with one, weekly 10:15am service. With the blessings of technology, the worship team continued to livestream services to connect our church family, near and far. In the spring, we were blessed with the return of the traditional 8:00am service. In the summer we explored the spiritual messages hidden within music through a sermon series, Secular Music, Sacred Message. We hosted a classical concert of music by J.S. Bach. In the fall, our praise team expanded as more musicians were drawn to praise God through their talents. The PCJH Music Academy also expanded its enrollment with the addition of new instructors. It remains an outreach as students from many faiths come to PCJH and connect to God through

musical studies. We remained prayerful and patient, even when plans for the 25th Anniversary Celebration had to be scaled back to keep our church family safe. Founding Pastor Hayden and founding members joined us as we affirmed the impact this church has had on countless lives. In the midst of a Pandemic, we celebrated what it means to love and trust God! We rejoiced in the gift of life with several memorial services and weddings. Baptisms and confirmations were celebrated. Youth joined worship on Sundays, offering prelude music and singing with the praise team. The church choir, in partnership with our children’s ministry, presented a beautiful re-telling of the Christmas story. While challenges in our world persist, we feel blessed to share God’s word. God is faithful.

E
ven in the middle of a pandemic, congregational life at PCJH still thrived in 2021. We safely started up our winter ski group, led by Steve and Connie Swan who chose some gorgeous locations for the group to fellowship and recreate in God’s creation. Connie led participants in scripture and prayer before each excursion and a wonderful time was had by all. PCJH blessedly resumed in-person worship in the spring and the Congregational Life team gave carnations to our mothers following the Mothers’ Day service in May. On the last Sunday in May, the congregation gathered for refreshments following worship to send Pastor Tammy off on her sabbatical. In June, the team passed out ice cream treats to dads, in honor of Fathers’ Day. The community garden, located in front of the church property was again cultivated. In late July, approximately 30 church members camped together at Colter Bay. Despite the rainy conditions, we enjoyed a delicious dinner and a delightful campfire sing along. 2021 marked the 25th Anniversary for the chartering of PCJH. The team went to great lengths to prepare for a celebration in September. Despite the last-minute changes, the event was a joyous celebration of God’s faithfulness and provision to PCJH, with our current and former pastor and members, old and new, sharing stories and testimony of God’s goodness. The Congregational Life team dedicated a new PCJH Community Cookbook to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of our church, a newly commissioned plaque to honor the charter members, and a time capsule which was buried on the church grounds. In December, many volunteers, both young and old, participated in the greening of the church for the Advent and Christmas seasons. The Congregational Life team is continually overwhelmed by the faithfulness of our God who continues to bless us in ways too numerous to count.

W
e at PCJH believe that a vital children’s ministry is necessary for a thriving congregation. The relationships and connections our children make within our congregation results not just in childrens’ spiritual growth but everyone’s growth in Jesus Christ. This year, even as we struggled through another year of a global pandemic, our children’s ministry was a success. Most of our programs continued to flourish and have a big impact on the children of our congregation and the Jackson community as a whole. Though starting off with blended learning (virtual and in-person) for the vast majority of the year Sunday School was held in-person. The Christmas Pageant combined with the PCJH Choir was held in-person and put on a spectacular show. Our community outreach programs such as Little Lambs Preschool and JOY Summer Camp had very high enrollment and a high impact on many families throughout the valley. As we head into 2022, please consider how you can participate in this incredible mission of PCJH Children’s Ministry.

he youth ministry saw favorite programs continued and new opportunities taken. Highlights include confirming seven new members during our Spring Confirmation Cohort. Six students confirmed their Baptism, and one student was baptised into Christ! We hosted our 4th annual Local Service Week, with a record number of students and partner organizations, over 30 student participants. We continued the ministry of the ice cream e-bike, with a few faithful PCJH members taking ownership of that program. Eccumnenical relationships were a continued focus, as we partnered with Young Life and local churches to host summer events open to all Youth Ministry Team: Barb Andrews (chair), Tammy Mitchell, Liz Collins, Ken Blount, Tena Webb, Erin Rosenberg
students: a giant kickball game, slip n’ slide fun, R Park Day and taking 50 students for an overnight weekend stay at Lagoon Amusement Park in Salt Lake City. Ten students and Liz had the opportunity to attend middle school WydlLife Camp in Creekside, Oregon. Two of our high school students attended YoungLife Camp in Crooked Creek Ranch, Colorado. In the Fall, we were able to restart the Thursday morning breakfast club before school. We hosted Thursday after school service days. Middle School Sunday School a new initiative, taking place once per month during the 10:15am sermon time. We continued to strive to involve students in the full life of the church, and multiple students shared their talents on Sunday mornings helping to lead worship in song or music.

he young adult ministry maintained a strong community of folks in their 20s and 30s. The year saw young adults who were a part of the group leave town for new jobs, a move back home, or other opportunities as chapters of their lives ended in Jackson. But as always, the year saw new young adults join the community, most of them brought to Jackson by job opportunities. A continual ebb and flow of the fabric of the community. The group exhausted their enthusiasm for virtual meetings, and embraced meeting outside during the heights of COVID waves. Later in the Fall, the group began meeting in-person, indoors for the first time in two years, for weekly Bible study and prayer, which felt like a great relief. The young adult team continued the new ministry, Encounter: Where Your Story Meets God’s Story, a storytelling evening. We hosted two storytelling evenings, with emcee Josh Ziolkowski and musician Melissa Elliott as the hosts. The themes, “Prayer” and “Touched by God,” called our amazing storytellers to share heartful, moving stories of faith.

The PCJH Deacons’ can be best described as ministers of compassion and service. The deacons step forward to help deliver meals, provide for monthly communion, organize special projects, reach out to the sick, comfort the grieving, and welcome the visitor. They have a passion to help PCJH become known for a loving community and a desire to engage everyone in opportunities for service. 2021 Highlights included the following: • 36 Cards/gifts of encouragement to people going through seasons of difficulty or celebration. • Provided medical transportation to Idaho Falls for people in need. • Made care calls to the congregation. • Partnered in helping with the 7 Minute Party after worship to greet newcomers to PCJH. • Monthly grief support group started with PCJH member and licensed professional facilitator Yvette Werner.

• Partnered with the Mission Team to administer the Wednesday Take Out Dinners and Home Delivery of meals. • Partnered with the Mission Team to organize and implement a Big 5 Drive, serving over 100 families. • Offered financial support to those in need. • At Christmas, the Angel Tree helped 12 local children with their Christmas wish lists along with donations of $700. • About 100 bags of groceries were collected and delivered to the Good Samaritan food bank. • Provided and served monthly Sunday communion as well as Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday communion.

administration e are blessed to have a safe and beautiful building that is used to fulfill our vision and mission. In addition to our commitment to safety precautions, PCJH opened its doors for usage for the Teton County Public Health Clinic, where over 17,000 Covid vaccines were administered. Our large parking lot was a huge asset for ease and accessibility for the public. Countless hours of volunteer hours made this initiative an immeasurable success for the community. Working hand-in-hand with Congregational Life, a 25th year chartering celebration of PCJH occurred in September 2021. We were able to host both new and old friends and members in a joy-filled Sunday Worship and lunch afterwards. A commemorative cookbook was produced that is being enjoyed by hundreds. Quarterly Pinnacles, Two Stewardship mailings and our Annual Report were produced and mailed. Planning Center, our new web based database, is launching January 2022 and much time and effort was put into the transition of that information so that we can all Administration benefit from a mutual source of connection.

ASSIMILATION and NOMINATIONS n an effort to connect with first time visitors, we started 7 Minute Parties after Sunday services to welcome new attendees. We updated our PCJH information cards and bookmarks. We also undertook new initiatives to contact people who might want to learn more about PCJH. For new members, we created “New Member Welcome Totes’ filled with church informational items. We recruited new elders, deacons and the Nomination Team members for 2022 and helped find additional members for other teams as needed. We praise God for the work we can accomplish through Him and for His glory.

W
hat a good year 2021 was for the Buildings and Grounds Ministry at PCJH. Stewardship of buildings, grounds, and vehicles is a high priority for the congregation and staff and once again most evident by the amount of volunteer time and staff hours devoted to clean-up, repairs and general cleaning, especially in the COVID-19 era. The original church building (sanctuary, lobby, offices) is 20 years old and the addition (chapel, Hayden Hall, kitchen, classrooms) is 12 years old. Systems, as well as furniture, fixtures and finishes are showing their age, yet in an appropriate and expected way. Issues with HVAC and lighting systems continue to be a challenge, especially
securing capable and reliable service work. Portions of the roof, both original and addition, continue to present problems with ice-damming and leaking. Jeff Dahlin is on top of it, shovelers were hired for this winter and a re-roofing contract is in store for the summer of 2022. Our beautiful commercial kitchen continues to be very popular in providing opportunities to provide Wednesday take-out dinners and serve the Mission. PCJH providing a Columbarium (or Memorial Garden) is a new project with planning just underway, providing an opportunity to say goodbye and commemorate a life well lived in a location near our wonderful church.

CJH is blessed with a dedicated staff who continued the outreach and work of our church in and for our community. In 2021, we were not immune to the labor issues in Teton County. Due to the high cost of housing, both JOY and Little Lambs were understaffed from what we had planned. The personnel team continues its oversight of performance reviews, job descriptions, hiring and access to professional, job-related education. We were more directly involved in changes to the PCJH employee manual and evaluating equitable compensation for all of our staff. It has been a blessing to us to see God’s work carried out by our Spirit-filled staff.

he PCJH Stewardship Team is so thankful to church members and friends who supported PCJH in 2021 with their time, treasure and talents. Thank you to all who so generously shared God’s gifts and blessings so that the many ministries of PCJH could carry on and expand! As the Covid pandemic kept going in 2021, PCJH was able to continue to support the Covid-related needs of the congregation and the greater Jackson community through Wednesday Night Take Out dinners and support for One 22 (including the JH Food Cupboard). In addition, PCJH was able to offer our sanctuary as a Covid vaccination site, and volunteers kept the health care workers well fed! And of course, regular ministries such as in-person and live-streamed worship, Little Lambs, Joy Summer Camp, small groups, youth and young adult ministries were all able to continue, thanks to many generous givers. In September, the church celebrated the 25th year of its chartering. Also in 2021, a PCJH endowment was created, to support the growth of the church for the next 25 years and beyond. The summer and year-end stewardship campaigns were successful and the 2021 budget was slightly exceeded, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of so many. As a result, PCJH has been able to add to its maintenance reserves and rainy day fund. PCJH is blessed to have so many cheerful givers. Thank you! Through our budgeting process we have carefully allocated resources across departments to ensure we are funded for the ministry and mission to which God has called us through PCJH. • We have no debt, a balanced budget, and funding for ongoing and future ministry. Our Payroll Protection Program loan that we received in 2020 was forgiven in full by the SBA in 2021. • Each year we add to a reserve for the future replacement of the roof, which at year end was $484,250. We anticipate using most of that reserve for a major roof repair in 2022. • We started a rainy-day fund five years ago to ensure that our ministry and mission continues despite unforeseen crises. We have saved $470,923 with a goal of about six months of covered operating expenses. • By God’s grace, and yours, our tithes and offerings for 2021 exceeded our target by $104,760.

Adult Ministry
Our net operating expenses for the year came in under budget, primarily the result of reduced levels of activity due to the pandemic, higher than expected enrollment in JOY and Little Lambs, but unfortunately also staff shortages in both those areas. Taken together, we ended the year with a $233,418 operating surplus. Session decided to allocate the surplus as follows: $23,342 to future mission projects, $64,170 to the buildings and grounds maintenance reserve; $103,035 to the roof reserve; $2,322 to future youth mission trips; $4,101 in unused hospitality donations deferred to next year; $6,448 to the employee housing reserve; and $30,000 to the rainy-day fund. In 2021 we were able to establish the PCJH Endowment Fund, initially funded with $200,000 in special gifts. Our goal is to continue to have the financial strength to do whatever ministry the Lord calls us to do in order to see lives being transformed in Jesus Christ.
