/ Pastors Letter Dear PCJH Family, As you are well aware, 2020 was an unprecedented year as we forged through the uncertainty and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic; the tragedies of racial injustice and its ensuing aftermath of nationwide protests; and to top it all off, we endured a polarizing election and intense political strife. It was a difficult year to say the least, but it was also a powerful year in which we leaned heavily on the love and justice, the guidance and direction, and the security and hope assured to us by our good and sovereign Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As your pastors, we are so humbled to serve the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole, and we are so proud of how you all stepped up in significant ways to continue our mission and ministry despite the challenges we faced. In fact, we are in awe of how Christ worked so graciously and generously through you to be a light in our community and beyond. We continued to gather from near and far around screens for livestream worship on Sundays. Those who worshiped with us weekly included people from across the United States and even the world. We were fortunate to offer in-person worship from June until November during the pandemic. We visited many of you at your homes this summer for a pastor porch visit, which was such an encouragement. JOY Summer Camp and Little Lambs Preschool made a positive impact in the lives of our children and youth after months of isolation. Our Wednesday take-out dinners and our COVID special offering generously blessed our local community and has planted seeds of faith as we extended God’s grace to our neighbors. Our children, youth, and adult ministries continued in creative ways. We even received new members who found PCJH in the midst of the pandemic. It’s been a unique year, but God remains faithful. We are blessed beyond measure. As you enjoy this annual report, may your eyes be open to how Jesus is alive and working among us. The church is not a building. The church is not just a worship service on Sunday morning. The church is the people, the Body of Christ. We are His hands and feet. We have the opportunity to share Christ with others each and every day no matter

very Sunday we gather as the Body of Christ to worship God, pray, encourage one another, and study God’s word. When 2020 began, we gathered at 8:00am and 10:15 every week. In March, the Covid-19 Pandemic challenged us to think outside ourselves and the traditional service model. We learned what it means to love and trust God and love one another in both word and deed. With the blessings of technology, the worship team continued to connect our church family through weekly services. Indeed, not a single Sunday has passed without the opportunity to be uplifted and connected to our Lord and Savior through music, scripture, and the spoken Word via livestream. PCJH upgraded its equipment to improve the livestream experience on YouTube. Pastors Ben and Tammy have also become quite the televangelists since March, in the most wonderful of ways! Our
Choir Director, Laura Huckin, stepped into the role of Worship and Music Coordinator ensuring the beauty of the Word in song continues every week. Varied worship opportunities and special events also continued at PCJH. Baptisms and confirmations were celebrated. Special service videos for key events such as Easter, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve touched many—near and far—in transformative ways. During summer, outdoor evening services were offered once a month. And even the PCJH Music Academy remains an outreach as students from many faiths come to PCJH and connect to God through musical studies. While we miss the opportunity to provide the 8:00am service, we miss special music from the choir, and we miss in-person Sunday school, we remain prayerful and patient. God is faithful and will lead us forward into the new year.

t the beginning of 2020, our Congregational Life team met and planned for 2020 as we moved forward with excitement, fresh visions, and ideas. The winter Cross Country Ski Group was in full swing and volunteer teams were being assembled. In March, our hopes of physically gathering for fellowship and celebration came to a halt. Zoom calls became the new norm. The time away from physically gathering did give us an opportunity to re-evaluate what it means to be part of a healthy and thriving congregation, and being together tops the list. We are incredibly proud of our members who took it upon themselves to hike, bike, walk and ski together, outdoors and safely distanced. Our community garden, located in the front of the church property along South Park Loop Road, was used and appreciated by families from around the community. This year we had one bed that was planted exclusively with peonies, which the church will be able to use for worship flowers in the next year or two. Our quilting group continues to meet online via Zoom. We did manage to gather a wonderful group of volunteers for spring and fall cleanup. In December, we had a group of volunteers come to help green the church, both inside and out. The enthusiastic response we received when we requested volunteers only serves to affirm the fact that, when restrictions are lifted, we will be in such need of being together that PCJH events will be met with thanksgiving and praise! Despite the challenges 2020 posed, we are continually overwhelmed by the goodness of our God who blesses us in ways far too numerous to count. We look to Him for guidance and trust in His provision and direction as we navigate the coming year as a church family.

e at PCJH believe that a vital children’s ministry is necessary for a thriving congregation. The relationships and connections our children make within our congregation results not just in children’s spiritual growth but everyone’s growth in Jesus Christ. During this global pandemic, we held true to this belief, finding ways to interact with families and children while doing our best to keep everyone safe. We were blessed with amazing creativity and perseverance from our staff, Children’s Ministry team and volunteers. While some traditional programs were put on hold (After-School Adventures, Parent’s Night Out and the conclusion of the Little Lambs 19-20 school year) other programs continued (Sunday School, JOY Summer Camp, 20-21 Little Lambs School year, Christmas Pageant); yet in very different and even surprisingly new ways. New events, such as the Family Quarantine Challenges in the spring and the Halloween Carnival in the fall, allowed families to participate and connect in fresh and safe ways. e are thankful that God led us in ways to continue focusing on students in 2020. We pivoted because of COVID-19 limitations to focus on small groups, virtual gatherings, and increased service opportunities. We are proud to say we continued to build upon our goal of bringing students to a personal relationship with Christ through community, fun, service and being integrated into life of PCJH.

e are grateful for the ways in which God continued to move PCJH into a more vibrant young adult ministry throughout 2020. We maintained a strong community of adults in their 20s and 30s that met on Zoom calls every week to study together, pray together and support one another. They gathered outside when COVID and the weather permitted, with hikes and dinner cookouts. Our team’s mission statement focuses on belonging, and includes the following goals:

We had a beautiful and successful first storytelling evening attended by 50 folks, outside on PCJH’s back lawn. A full representation of our family, all generations, were present. 9 storytellers shared their own true stories about how their faith has transformed them in small and large ways throughout their lives. Intergenerational empathy grew in a vulnerable yet fun setting. ur vision is to make disciples of Jesus Christ by offering biblically-based, life-transforming opportunities. Our hope is to equip and nurture the congregation in developing a vital faith so we might be poured out into our community and the world for the sake of the Gospel and the love of God. 2020 Highlights
This year presented multiple challenges for spiritual formation, specifically in limiting our in-person gatherings. However, PCJH offered inspiring and diverse events for growth: In-person and online classes on Isaiah, The Chosen Series, Women in the Bible, Financial Peace, the book of Esther, and Names for the Messiah. A Storytelling event in the summer on the topic of “Hope.” Wednesday evening times with Pastor Ben. Wednesday noon Zoom discussions on two books: Strength to Love by MLK Jr. and I’m Still Here, by Austin Channing Brown. Deborah Buckingham led a community-wide study on Galatians at which 40 women attended.
The Small Group mission is to engage people in small groups through transformational relationships, study, prayer, and service. Each group is led by a trained facilitator. Even during Covid, small groups met outside or via zoom. PCJH currently has 5 Small Groups with 34 people attending.

eacon ministries
The PCJH Deacons’ can be best described as ministers of compassion. They actively seek ways to not only offer occasional assistance, but also demonstrate Christ-like practices in caring for those in need. The deacons step forward to help deliver meals, organize special projects, reach out to the sick, comfort the grieving, and welcome the visitor. They have a passion to help PCJH become known for a loving community and a desire to engage everyone in opportunities for service. 2020 Highlights included the following: • Cards of encouragement to each Living Center and Legacy Lodge residents. • Partnered with the Mission Team to administer the Wednesday Take Out Dinners and Home Delivery of meals.
• Sanitizing all tables and chairs used for community meals. • Partnered with the Mission Team to organize and implement a Big 5 Drive, serving over 145 families. • Offered financial support to those in need. • At Christmas, the collection of table games for children ages 3-8 for Good Samaritan Mission. • Made Care Calls to every member of PCJH.

In addition to the deacon ministries, the pastors also ministered to people through grief counseling, spiritual direction, and pre-marital counseling. A special highlight was offering “Front Porch Visits”, which the pastors, (following safe and healthy protocols), went to the home of those desired a pastoral call. 12-15 visits were made in July through October.

n March 2020, as all our lives took a COVID turn, so did our front office at PCJH. We worked diligently in person at the church during the week to keep our church community informed, safe, and connected. Our meetings all immediately switched to Zoom and accounts were added to accommodate the change in operating. Our church did not miss a beat with our proactive approach in making sure we remained available to our congregation and community. Becoming a Live Stream only venue for worship was one of our priorities. Much time and talent of staff and volunteers was put into making our time to worship remotely as meaningful and fulfilling as possible. Ally Kiefer produced countless videos, a virtual bulletin and weekly slide changes to share during worship. In the weeks when we did move back to a small in-person setting, the entire building was addressed to the fullest of a mindful COVID restriction setting. Commercially recommended air filtration systems were placed in the sanctuary, touchable services removed, chairs re-arranged, and shields for our musicians built. What the administration office did not use in office and copy supplies this past year, we moved towards providing hand sanitizer, thermometers and masks to all that needed them. The Quarterly Pinnacle, Annual Report, and Stewardship mailings continued and reached hundreds of our friends and families. We worked diligently to make sure the use of our building was used as safe and efficient as possible. Multiple schedules were created for community rentals. We prepared our archaic database for a transition this coming year into a product that will benefit all members as well as our leaders and staff. Rolls and information were updated. This past year, the prayer chain became a more prominent means of remaining a faithful church family in prayer and support to those who requested prayers. We so look forward to being back together and supporting all of you in any way we can!

t was another active year for the Buildings and Grounds Ministry at PCJH. The original church building, which is the Sanctuary, Main Lobby, Library and Staff offices is 20 years old. Our addition, which is already 12 years old, encompassed our Chapel, Hayden Hall, Commercial Kitchen and Classrooms in the north section. Systems, as well as furniture, fixtures and finishes are showing their age, yet in an appropriate and expected way. The furnace that heats the Chapel was replaced and thermostats were replaced with programmable devices to better control heat in eleven different zones depending on occupancy needs. Various lighting systems were addressed including replacing damaged parking lot lights, replacing stage lighting filters, and numerous bulbs, including some with special ordered ballasts. Both the original and newer roofs presented problems with ice-damming which then caused interior leaking when the ice began to melt. Interior repairs to ceilings and walls in approximately 4-5 areas were done in the spring. More

frequent shoveling was schedule for the winter and lower snow accumulation have helped. A new fire/ smoke detection and warning system was replaced over a two-week period, and is now up to code for all required inspections. Our commercial kitchen became very popular in providing school lunches and community dinners due to the virus restrictions in place. Guidelines for Use, Rental Rates, and User Agreements were established to assure equipment is properly cared for. The kitchen, as well as other systems on our building required updates and maintenance. In this COVID era, improvements were accomplished for the facility including permanent sanitizer stations, a more rigorous cleaning protocol, installation of several air filter/purification devices, and safe-distancing/mask sign-age. We were also able to start and finish a major remodel to the 30-year old Rafter J Manse where the Pascal family lives. The project started on September 1st, and was finished a week before Christmas.

e are so blessed with a wonderful staff at PCJH! Everyone loves Jesus, is exceptional at what they do, and we all enjoy working together. In 2020 we had several staffing transitions. We said goodbye to our faithful office assistant, Pam Flores, who served the church for many years. Christine Goodman retired from her post as PCJH chef and we were overjoyed that the Lord brought us Caroline Cox as her replacement. We transitioned Laura Huckin into the role of part-time Worship and Music Coordinator, working alongside all of our talented musicians. Ally Kiefer moved from part-time to full-time as our Communications Coordinator as she took on the added responsibilities of Sunday morning communications, video production,

Please be sure to encourage our employees as they give so much of their time and energy to the work of ministry at PCJH. The staff did an exceptional job creatively adapting to the challenges of the pandemic. We were fortunate to be able to keep all of our staff on payroll, even when operations were shut down in the Spring, due in part to the PPP loan PCJH received through the CARES Act. Our personnel team stays busy with personnel transitions, performance reviews, personnel manual changes, refining job descriptions, ensuring all employees receive adequate compensation and continuing education opportunities, and making sure we all have fun and enjoy being on this amazing team together!

e are so grateful to the Lord for his incredible generosity to us and our church. Despite the many challenges the global pandemic presented in 2020, by the end of December we exceeded our offerings goal. In addition to the very generous giving that allowed us to meet our 2020 budget, the congregation shared their blessings with our ongoing COVID Special Offering, allowing PCJH to assist with many of the needs of the Jackson community arising from the pandemic. The church was able to offer Wednesday Take-Out dinners, support One 22 and the JH and Teton Valley Food Cupboards, and assist with mental health services. Many shared their time and talents with these efforts as well. What a blessing that so many in our church gave so selflessly. Through our budgeting process we have carefully allocated resources across departments to ensure we are funded for the ministry and mission to which God has called us through PCJH. • We have a balanced budget, and funding for ongoing and future ministry. We received a Payroll Protection Program loan early in the pandemic, which helped us maintain full employment. • Each year we add to a reserve for the future replacement of the roof, which at year end was in a restricted account with $351,215. • We started a rainy-day fund five years ago to ensure that our ministry and mission continues despite unforeseen crises. We have saved $404,923, with a goal of at least six months of covered operating expenses. • Despite a delay due to the pandemic, we were able to substantially complete the Rafter J

Manse remodel. Although we received approval last year for a loan, we used the remainder of the Sullivan bequest, unrestricted cash, and funds from the year end surplus to fund the project without debt. Our actual expenses for 2020 came in under budget, and our tithes and offerings for 2020 substantially exceeded our target, so we were able to finish the year, by God’s grace, with a $246,901 surplus. Session decided to allocate the surplus as follows: $24,690 to future mission projects; $70,000 to the buildings and grounds maintenance reserve; $15,000 to the Deacons’ Fund; $73,000 for the Rafter J Manse remodel; $20,000 to the roof reserve; $5,000 to upgrade our audio / visual equipment; and $39,211 to the rainy-day fund. Our year end cash balance was higher than usual due to the 2020 surplus, and some special gifts outside of general offerings. Our goal is to continue to have the financial strength to do whatever ministry the Lord calls us to do in order to see lives being transformed in Jesus Christ.
