/ Senior pastor Dear PCJH Family, God blessed us with another incredible year in the life of PCJH! Inside this annual report you will read all about the many different ways we are fulfilling our vision to see lives being transformed in Jesus Christ. You will also read about how we are living out our mission to be a community, rooted in Christ, reaching out in love. Thank you for the ways in which you have been a part of our church’s mission and ministry in 2018. A highlight for me personally was the opportunity for my wife, Addie, and I to lead 31 people from PCJH to the Holy Land for a Christian Pilgrimage. Another special aspect of the trip was that my parents joined us too. Our group was filled with amazing people and we all grew so much in our love for the Lord and for one another. The Bible came to life for us in new ways. We gathered new insights on Scripture through learning more about the geography, archeology, culture, and languages of the Middle East. We waded into the complexity and heartbreak of the current conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians as we toured the West Bank and heard stories firsthand from people on both sides. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and I believe everyone who went on the pilgrimage experienced transformation as they grew deeper roots in Jesus Christ. We also made great progress on PCJH’s strategic focus areas for 2018. Some highlights included an intentional effort to embed Scripture in all that we do; increased involvement, participation and vision for our children’s ministry; a renewed energy and focus for our youth and young adult ministries; and a clear plan of action for our small group ministry task force as we seek to develop small groups in 2019. I continue to be humbled and blessed to be your senior pastor. It is an honor and a privilege to serve alongside you in ministry here in this beautiful community of Jackson Hole. With gratitude, ~ Pastor Ben

/ Associate pastor 2018 marked a significant year for authentic spiritual growth in our congregation through a variety of fresh opportunities. With our new vision and mission in place, we were positioned to move forward with renewed focus and energy. Spiritual growth takes on many forms yet one of the most significant events for PCJH was a trip to the Holy Land. Their experience transformed all of us as we reengaged in what it means to be connected to Christians and issues beyond our church walls. Our missions team was very active in increasing our mission involvement, locally and globally. In adult ministries, we continued to offer stimulating classes on Sunday mornings which have challenged and enriched our faith. This year PCJH had a wonderful women’s retreat, offered thoughtful bible studies, hosted the Global Leadership Summit and other special events. We are particularly excited to be in full swing of developing a small group ministry which will be launched in the fall of 2019. One of this year’s highlights included partnering with the Whitworth University Fellowship Program. We welcomed Sarah Scott, who served in youth ministry, worship, and general ministries. Under the leadership of Liz Collins, the youth ministry continued to flourish with regular gatherings and mission opportunities. The youth are especially jazzed about the beautiful remodel of the youth room. PCJH is intentionally committed to partner with parents and families in the spiritual formation of children. We specifically sought to increase involvement in children’s Sunday school by better equipping teachers and parents to make these mornings the best hour of the week. Additionally JOY Summer Camp was another huge success as well as our After School Adventures, thanks to Aaron Nydam and Dylan Wade. As I reflect on this last year, I am so honored and blessed to serve such a dynamic, Christ-centered and mission-minded congregation. Thank you for the privilege. ~ Pastor Tammy

very Sunday, at 8:00am and 10:15am, we gather as the Body of Christ to worship God, pray, encourage one another, and study God’s word. We are now live-streaming our 10:15am service on the PCJH YouTube channel, making our services available to a much wider audience. In 2018, sermons touched on a wide range of topics, including our new PCJH Vision, Mission and Values, Walking with Jesus in the Holy Land, The Land Between (the Book of Exodus), Living Lives of Generosity, Half-Truths about the Bible, and an in-depth study of the Book of Revelation. Our pastors continually challenge us to think outside ourselves as we digest and interpret scripture, learning what it means to love and trust God and love one another in both word and deed. Special services and events in 2018 included a

Taizé service, One Hope (a worship collaboration with several local churches), an Easter Sunrise service at the summit of the Bridger Gondola at JHMR, Bluegrass Sunday, hosting the Imani Milele Ugandan Choir, and the Christmas Cantata. We also celebrated 33 baptisms, including 3 large group baptisms – two in String Lake in GTNP and the other in the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Through varied worship opportunities, exciting special events, and remarkable guest speakers, PCJH provides amazing opportunities for encountering God in new and profound ways. The PCJH Music Academy continues to grow as students from many faith traditions come to PCJH to connect to God through the study of guitar, piano, strings, and percussion. 2018 saw the hire of an additional instructor, as well as the first sponsored music student through a partnership with Boundless.

ur congregation is full of life (and fun)! Some of the ways our congregation does life together are through the following activities and events: Cross Country Skiing together after church in the winter led by Ed & Patricia Scott. We average about 25 people each week with apres ski soup and sides as we fellowship with one another. Every year our congregation comes together to bless our community by recycling our old stuff at the annual Rummage Sale. The event creates an opportunity for PCJH fellowship by serving together, we raise money for our church’s mission and ministry, and we bless our community with affordable goods. In 2018 we serviced 15 local non-profits by providing items for families in need. $11,529 was raised through the Rummage Sale in 2018. During the summer people from our church and community work the Garden of Eatin’ located on our property along South Park Loop Road. 12 families have plots and they give 10% of their crops to people in need. Our congregation comes together for fellowship and fundraising each summer as we sell peaches to the community during our annual Peach Sale. In 2018 we sold 511 boxes of Colorado peaches from South Fork Orchards. $4,447 was raised through the Peach Sale in 2018. In September ten church families hosted children in their homes from the Uganda Imani Children’s Choir that performed at PCJH. In December we hosted our annual Christmas party at the Elk’s Lodge for all of our current staff, elders, deacons, and their significant others.

ur children’s ministry is flourishing at PCJH under the leadership of our children’s ministry team and staff, who are devoted to serve our community’s children and their families so that they may know and experience the love of Jesus. This past year the focus was on creating a sustainable structure to our volunteering system and provide ways for parents to participate in children’s programs at PCJH. The creation of the CM Ambassadors roles will help families involve themselves in our programs, provide a voice for the parents, and help with volunteer recruitment. Quarterly parent mixer events were also implemented to provide parents a chance to interact and learn from each other as well as get excited about the future of children’s ministry at PCJH. We at PCJH believe that the future of our church resides in our children and the relationships and connections our children make with our congregation result not just in the children’s spiritual growth but everyone’s growth in Jesus Christ. Please consider how you will participate in the spiritual growth of our children at PCJH.

ne of PCJH’s strategic focus areas for 2018 was to ignite youth ministries by developing a sustainable, vital ministry for teenagers, instilling in the congregation a vision of what it means to be a dynamic, motivated people for Christ that fully includes youth. The youth team took deliberate steps in building a strong foundation for the ministry. PCJH hired Liz Collins full time in June as youth & young adult ministry coordinator. The youth team is studying and implementing strategies from the book Growing Young. The Orange curriculum continues to be a strong partner in ministry. Major renovations were completed to update the youth lounge.

The year was filled with youth group and breakfast club gatherings. Students spent time studying the Bible, praying together, and learning about Christ and the church. Plenty of fun was had at lock-ins, bowling parties, campouts, a trip to the fair, successful Escape Room adventures, volleyball lawn parties, and more. It was really special to have individuals and families generously volunteer to share their art skills, cooking skills, their homes, and even their campgrounds, with students. Another highlight was partnering with St. John’s Episcopal Church to offer a local mission week in which 15 students studied the good Samaritan parable and volunteered their time with local organizations.

Women’s Retreat entitled “Moving Beyond the Ordinary” with guest speaker Chris Welch in September 2018. Around 50 women participated at the Lakeside Lodge in Pinedale for inspirational messages, fellowship and fun; with Karee Miller as our worship leader. We hosted the 4th annual Global Leadership Summit on August 9-10 with 140 in attendance from the Jackson Hole valley. We partnered with local churches including St. John’s Episcopal Church, First Baptist, and River Crossing. Deborah Buckingham led a community-wide bible study on Revelation in which 80 women were enriched and encouraged in God’s word. A new small group ministry team was formed and are currently actively planning to launch a churchwide small group ministry in the fall of 2019. We partnered with Tribe, First Baptist, and Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in

hosting a community-wide women’s Christmas luncheon at Snow King Resort at which about 300 women participated. • A dozen young adults in their 20’s and 30’s gather every Wednesday for fellowship, prayer and study. • As in years past, the adult ministries team made available Advent and Lenten devotionals for people to take and use at home. • We were graced with several exceptional guest speakers who shared their unique ministries: 1. Todd Deatherage (above), Executive Director of the Telos Organization, brought a very informative presentation on the current Israel/Palestine situation. 2. Ken Kierstead, Vice President Agros International discussed the organization’s vital work and mission in Central America. 3. Rev. Isaak Ameer, Presbyterian pastor in Tyre, Lebanon, spoke to us regarding the ministry to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. 4. Ed Wigg did a special presentation on alcoholism and addiction issues.

eacon ministries

PCJH deacons are 22 committed, compassionate people dedicated to caring for the sick and needy in the name of Jesus Christ. In 2018, the deacons restructured into various teams in order to more effectively care for others in need. The Prayer Team regularly prayed for those requesting prayer on the prayer chain. The Service Project team assembled a special Angel Tree at Christmas, helping Jackson children to receive cold weather clothing. The Meal Team prepared, cooked and delivered meals to those experiencing an illness, a loss, or a life transition. The Transportation Team provided rides to and from hospitals or doctor appointments. The “First Responder Team” responded to unexpected crises, and the Sunshine team sent notes, cards, and gifts

to encourage and uplift. The Hospitality team found greeters and servers for worship services and memorial services. And the Communion team prepared the elements for communion. Every deacon considers it an honor and privilege to give hands-on care for PCJH and the community at large.

In addition to the deacons, the pastors consistently offered care and support, whether it was pre-marital counseling, grief support, spiritual direction, visitation or other issues.

A

s you can imagine, it takes a lot of time and resources to operate an active church like PCJH. Cindy Dahlin, our Church Administrator, and her team do an outstanding job of keeping the church organized and operational. In 2018 we continued to upgrade our communication systems by launching a brand new PCJH website (pcjh.org) with the help of our Creative Director, Beth Ricciardi and Farland Lee Studios. The new website has enhanced features such as a welcome video for newcomers, live streaming of worship services, recorded videos of the weekly sermons, online registrations for programs and events, social media updates, a blog, and many other electronic tools to keep people informed and to welcome new people into the life of the church. We also completely revamped our Pinnacle newsletter to make it a quarterly issue that shares stories and photos regarding important topics that pertain to the Christian faith and the life of PCJH. We continue to introduce members and regular attenders to our new online church directory so that we can stay in touch as a congregation and have contact information for one another literally at our fingertips (i.e. smart phones and computers). PCJH gives $42 per member to the PCUSA denomination for administrative purposes. In 2018 we gave $15,756 to help support the denomination’s ministry and mission.

e are blessed with a wonderful facility, beautiful grounds, two manses, lots of acreage, and four vehicles. In order to be good stewards of these resources, it requires constant maintenance and upkeep through our wonderful buildings and grounds team of staff and volunteers. In 2018 we were able to upgrade some of our commercial kitchen appliances in order to better serve our guests at our Wednesday Community Dinners and other events. We installed an additonal oven and a large mixer. We also installed a drainage system in the northwest corner of the parking lot to better drain the snow melt and preserve the asphalt. Other projects included

continued renovations to the courtyard and some interior painting. In 2018 our Session formed an Employee Housing Task Force to look into PCJH’s need for additional employee housing in order to retain and recruit quality people for the years to come and to ensure PCJH remains an anchor in our community. This team is not only looking into our employee housing needs but also the variety of options before us. Through our budgeting process we have carefully allocated resources across departments to ensure we are funded for the ministry and mission God has called us to through PCJH. Here are a few highlights from 2018 in regards to finances: • We have no debt, a balanced budget, and funding for ongoing and future ministry. • We allocate $5,000/year to a roof reserve fund. As of December 31, 2018 the roof reserve is in a restricted account with a total of $343,309. • We started a rainy day fund three years ago to ensure that our ministry and mission continues despite economic recessions or other unforeseen crises. As of December 31, 2018 we have saved $293,712 and have allocated an additional $36,000 in the 2019 budget with a goal of at least six months of covered operating expenses. In 2018 we moved $237,987 of the rainy day fund into an interest bearing account at the Finance Team: Alan Lund (chair), Ben Pascal, Wes Lucas, Caryn Haman, Bob Lewis, Mack Mendenhall, Chip Jones, John Scott

Presbyterian Foundation. We currently have $81,194 in a deferred account from the Sullivan Bequest. Session has decided to keep this money available for special projects and initiatives that fall outside our normal budgeting process. In 2018 our youth ministry team used $26,434 to remodel the youth room for our growing youth ministry. PCJH was awarded a grant in 2018 from the Lily Endowment for Pastor Ben’s sabbatical. We had a surplus of $57,361 at the end of 2018. Session met to prayerfully discuss how best to utilize these surplus funds and decided to allocate them to mission/outreach, the rainy day fund, Pastor Tammy’s sabbatical program in 2020, and a few small projects that fall outside our normal operating budget. Our goal is to continue to have the financial strength to do whatever ministry the Lord calls us to do in order to see lives being transformed in Jesus Christ.
