/ Senior pastor Dear PCJH Family, 2017 was a great year! Thank you for the part you played in it all. We started and finished a comprehensive vision process which produced a brand new vision, mission, and values statement for PCJH, in addition to a dozen strategic focus areas that we will emphasize over the next three years and beyond. If you haven’t received a PCJH Vision 2020 packet, please contact the church office and we will get one to you. Inside this annual report you will read about many wonderful things that have happened within the life of PCJH in 2017. We have seen growth in our various ministries both in spiritual maturity and in numbers. There has been an increase in worship attendance and in giving of our time, talent and treasure. We have developed an exceptional leadership team of dedicated staff, volunteers, elders, and deacons. Our ministry to young people has new vision and energy. Our efforts to reach out in love to our community and world has renewed focus and passion. Even though we were labeled as a “complacent church” after taking a church-wide survey in early 2017, it seems that we are moving out of our complacency and towards vibrancy. I believe our new vision will help guide us to future growth as we implement it and live it out. Our vision is to see lives being transformed in Jesus Christ. Our mission is to be a community, rooted in Christ, reaching out in love. What steps will you take towards being transformed in Jesus Christ? I believe transformation begins with roots of trust in Jesus Christ. Transformation develops within Christ-centered community. Transformation multiplies as we reach out in love. Transformation continues throughout our lives. Will you join us on this journey of transformation? On the journey with you, ~ Pastor Ben

/ Associate pastor 2017 marked the 500 anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, beginning when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of the church in Wittenburg, Germany. Celebrating the Reformation is not only celebrating past European history. It’s celebrating how God was and is moving today in and through the church. As the associate pastor, I have been privileged to see God’s reforming work here at the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole. I partner with several ministry teams where we envision together, build community, and initiate new ways of leading this congregation. There is wonderful, holy and Godly work being done by gifted people all over this place. We continue to raise the bar of our effectiveness and engagement. This past year, we welcomed Amanda Lack as our new Director for Little Lambs Preschool, along with four new teachers. Intentionally taking steps to strengthen our youth ministry we hired Liz Collins as our Youth Coordinator, and in one year’s time, we’ve seen the youth group significantly take off, with lock-ins, regular Sunday school, and the Thursday Breakfast Club. The Children’s Ministry Coordinator, Dylan Wade, led a phenomenal JOY Summer Camp which was “all the buzz” around town. Once again, the Global Leadership Summit made a huge impact as we saw a considerable increase in attendance. The Missions Team sent another work group to Nicaragua to work with the Agros Ministry. It was exciting to see how the long-standing partnership with the village has brought significant change enhancing that community’s life. The Deacons continue to look for new ways to provide excellent care for our church family, while the Vision Team’s process became a true highlight. With our new vision, mission and value statements, we see God continue to reform and transform us in Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God for an amazing year, full of remarkable evidence of God’s great ongoing Reformation! ~ Pastor Tammy

ach Sunday we are drawn together into the presence of God through worship. We praise God through music, we share life together in prayer, we hear God’s word to renew our hearts and minds, and we are sent into the world to be ambassadors of Christ’s love. We have a faithful group of people who enjoy traditional worship in the chapel on Sundays at 8:00am. We also offer an intergenerational contemporary service at 10:15am with a praise band, children’s sermon, special music by individuals, and our adult and children’s choirs. Our 2017 sermon series highlights—Book of James, Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross, Sermon on the Mount, and Roots of Reformed Theology. In 2017 we celebrated special services such as

Bluegrass Sunday, Ash Wednesday, a Healing Service with Father Ubald from Rwanda, Holy Week with Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, Easter and Christmas Cantatas, and five Christmas Eve services featuring a variety of musicians, instruments, and decor. PCJH also hosted an ecumenical worship night with several other local churches in June. We continue to do outreach to the ski community by providing five worship services at the summit of the gondola during the winter. The PCJH Music Academy continues to see growth with over 51 students taking lessons for voice, piano, guitar, percussion, cello, and violin. The vision of the music academy is to bring Christ alive in the hearts of students as they encounter God through music.

e are a community that lives life together. The ministry of congregational life is important as we build relationships with one another as a community of faith. We do this through fellowship on Sunday mornings, our mid-week community dinner on Wednesday nights, special fun events like potlucks, bowling night, dance night with lessons, recreational excursions like our winter cross country ski group, and dinners in people’s homes. In 2017 we enhanced our hospitality efforts on Sunday morning in order to greet and welcome people to PCJH, especially first-time visitors. We
have a greeter outside as people approach the front doors, we have greeters handing out bulletins inside the front doors, someone to direct families with children, someone assisting people at our welcome desk, and greeters at the entrance of the sanctuary in order to help direct people to open seats. Our office staff also does an excellent job of following up with visitors by sending them a welcome letter from Pastor Ben, an email, and sometimes a phone call. Statistics show that if someone has a good first experience at church, they will likely come back, and if they come back a second time they will usually stay.

ne of our strategic focus areas for 2018 is to reinvigorate our children’s ministry. Under the leadership of our newly developed volunteer children’s ministry team and our committed staff, we have seen renewed excitement for our ministry to children and their families. One of the first things our children’s ministry team did together was to form a purpose statement: The children’s ministry at PCJH strives to 1) serve our community’s children and their families in order that they know and experience the love of Jesus, 2) provide intentional, engaging experiences for children and families that nurture the Christian faith, shape character and build trusting relationships, 3) participate in the restoration of God’s Kingdom. We continue to need additional volunteers in order to fulfill this purpose. Please consider how you will participate in the children’s ministry at PCJH.

/ Youth Ministry
T
he youth ministry at PCJH had a restart in 2017 and we are hoping to see continued growth now that one of our strategic focus areas for PCJH is to ignite our youth ministry. This past year we formed a volunteer youth ministry team and hired Liz Collins, our part-time youth coordinator, in June 2017. With a strong leadership team in place we began to reach out to the middle school students in our church and have seen a core group develop. They have been meeting on Sunday mornings for bible study and Thursday mornings for Breakfast Club before heading off to school. There have also been mutliple special events such as a lock-in, summer Lagoon trip, movie night, holiday parties, bowling night, preparing food for Good Samaritan Mission, working with

Habitat (pictured below) and other adventures together around town. Plans are in the works to do a local outreach event and retreat in summer of 2018 and we are also looking forward to making our youth coordinator position a full-time position so that we can put more time and resources into reaching our middle school and high school students within our church family and the larger Jackson community. We continue to partner with Young Life Jackson Hole and Fellowship of Christian Athletes in order to broaden our reach. / Adult ministry Our ministry to adults continues to grow as we put more energy and resources into enhancing opportunities for spiritual formation. Some of the highlights include:
• Couple’s Retreat with Mike & Shari Gaffney in
February 2017. We had 50 people attend this two-day workshop to enhance their relationship. • Paul Hayden returned to PCJH to facilitate our Men’s Retreat in May 2017. 24 men gathered at a lodge in Driggs, Idaho for a weekend of fellowship, study, food, and recreation. • We hosted the third annual Global Leadership Summit on August 10-11. 189 people in attendance from Jackson Hole and outlying towns in the region. Attendees were pastors, church-workers, business leaders, non-profit leaders, government officials, homemakers, teachers and retired volunteers. We partnered with local churches, including St. John’s Episcopal Church, First Baptist, and Church of the Resurrection, Pinedale, WY. • We hosted an all community women’s bible Adult Ministries Team: Ken Blount (chair), Kathy Robertson, Tammy Mitchell, Liz Collins, Addie Pascal
study led by PCJH’s own, Deborah Buckingham. We had over 84 women attend from the community. • We partnered with First Baptist, Tribe, and Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in order to host a community-wide women’s luncheon at Snow King in December with over 320 women— teaching from our very own, Deborah Buckingham. • The 20’s and 30’s, Ascent Ministry meet on Wednesday nights to provide a place for young adults to grow in their relationship with the Lord and each other, led by Pastor Ben and Liz Collins • The Adult Ministries Team provided devotionals for people to take home during Lent and Advent. • We continue to provide adult educational opportunities weekly at the following times:

/ Assimilation
O
ur nominating team oversees the assimilation of new people into the life of PCJH, whether members or regular attenders. We are pleased to report that 12 members were called, nominated and elected into office as either Ruling Elders or Deacons. This is a wonderful testimony to the congregation’s desire to use their gifts in ministry to the church and community. We also welcomed 10 new members in 2017. We have a strategic system in place to assimilate new people into the life of PCJH through a letter upon their first visit, personal contact from either Ben or Cindy within a few days upon visiting, an invitation to coffee with one of the pastors, an invitation to a one-time welcome
dinner at the home of a member of the congregation alongside other new people, an invitation to our quarterly church information class, and eventually an invitation to membership. Once people become members, we have them fill out lists of potential areas they would like to use their gifts in the life of the church. They sit down with a member of the assimilation team and we encourage them to get plugged in their gifts and passions. We are excited about the team we have in place who will help us with the very important job of assimilating people into the life of the church.

2017 caring for people in need within PCJH and the broader Jackson Hole community. There were many hospital visits, counseling sessions, home visits, and pre-marital counseling sessions. Pastoral care needs include: physical illness or injury, mental illness, addictions, marital issues, divorce, forgiveness, grief, and funeral arrangements. The pastors are available and willing to meet with anyone in need regardless of their religious affiliation or background.

S
tephen Ministers are members of our
congregation who listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support to people facing a crisis or going through tough times. The care received is confidential, free, and very helpful. We have officially partnered with the St. John’s Episcopal Church Stephen Ministry program in order to join forces and better care for people in difficult situations.

/ Administration
A
s you can imagine, it takes a lot of time and resources to operate a church like PCJH. Cindy Dahlin, our Church Administrator, and her team do an outstanding job of keeping the church organized and operational. In 2017, we introduced a new online church directory so that we can stay in touch as a congregation and have contact information for members and regular attenders literally at our fingertips (i.e. smart phones and computers). Gone are the days of a hard copy directory, however, if you would like a printout of the directory you may request one by contacting the front office. In 2017 we printed our first annual report since 2008 as we seek to be more transparent and accountable to the ministry and mission God has called us to and to share that with our congregation and also visitors and people interested in joining the church. We introduced a new PCJH vision, mission and values statement along with a dozen key strategic focus areas to help guide us into the next several years. Please pick up a copy of the vision pamphlet in the church lobby if you don’t already have one. PCJH is required to give $42 per member to the PCUSA denomination. In 2017 we gave $16,957 to help support the denomination’s ministry.

ur buildings, grounds and vehicles continue to require a lot of time and resources to maintain so we are in the midst of developing a deep bench of volunteers to help oversee these beautiful resources God has blessed us with. In 2017 we saved some money by hosting a church staining party in July. We had over 20 people help stain the entire church building which saved us roughly $20,000. It was a great time of fellowship too and the church looks great! We purchased a third mini-bus in 2017 in order to get rid of our last 15-passenger van which was outlawed by many school districts around the country because they were deemed unsafe due to the horrific
casualties caused by the vans poor design. Having three mini-buses, we are able to responsibly transport children around the valley and beyond in the safest vehicles on the market. We also sold the Subaru Tribeca and purchased an all-wheel drive Toyota Sienna minivan to better transport our children and to have a smaller vehicle in our fleet for the various uses our church programs require. Thank you to our buildings and grounds team for their faithful and wise stewardship! Buildings and Grounds Team: Peter Keenan (chair), Bill Fox, Cindy Dahlin, Christine Goodman, Ben Pascal

In 2017 we welcomed Dylan Wade as our Children’s Ministry Coordinator, Liz Collins as our Communications and Youth Coordinator, Beth Ricciardi as our Creative Director, and Amanda Lack as our Little Lambs Preschool Director. We are blessed with our incredible staff team. Please be sure to encourage them as they give so much of their time and energy to the work of ministry through PCJH. The PCJH full-time staff had a one-day retreat in Victor, ID in September for team building and

We had another balanced budget in 2017 and we have one for 2018 as well. As part of that budget we have carefully allocated resources across departments to ensure we are funded for the ministry and mission God has called us to through PCJH. Here are a few highlights from 2017: • We have no debt, a balanced budget, and funding for ongoing and future ministry. • We allocate $5,000/year to a roof reserve fund. As of December 31, 2017 the roof reserve is in a restricted account with a total of $321,215. • We started a rainy day fund at the beginning of 2016 so that we can ensure that our ministry and mission continues despite economic recessions or other unforeseen crisis. As of December 31, 2017 we have saved $96,000 and have allocated an additional $36,000 in the 2018 budget with a goal of at least six months of covered operating expenses.

We currently have $81,194 in a deferred account from the Sullivan Bequest. Session has decided to keep that money available for special projects and initiatives that fall outside our normal budgeting process. We had an initial surplus of $157,763 in 2017. Session met to prayerfully discuss how best to utilize these surplus funds and decided to tithe $15,776 to mission/outreach and put the remaining $141,987 into the rainy day fund.
