The Phoenix Children’s Center for Heart Care is the fifthlargest pediatric cardiac program in the nation and the “goto” regional referral center in the Southwest.

The Phoenix Children’s Center for Heart Care provides pediatric cardiac care for children with arrhythmias, congenital heart defects, heart failure and other cardiac-related conditions. Our team delivers advanced, family-centered care at eight locations throughout the Valley, from the simplest procedure to the most complex. With your support, we’re expanding Phoenix Children’s reach and impact so that all Arizona children can get the care they need.

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), on average, cares for more than 700 patients each year, including 15 transplant recipients.

Jason, 16, and his family never imagined they might need worldclass cardiac care until the December afternoon when Jason collapsed at basketball practice and went into cardiac arrest. School staff used an automated extreme defibrillator (AED) to get Jason’s heart beating again. Days later, doctors at Phoenix Children’s Center for Heart Care diagnosed a hard-to-detect condition.

After open heart surgery, Jason was on the road to recovery.

ADULT CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE PROGRAM The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Comprehensive Care Center at Phoenix Children’s Center for Heart Care is helping teens and young adults transition from pediatric to adult cardiology care, an often unmet need. Pediatric cardiologists are experts on congenital heart defects but aren’t trained to care for adults. Most adult cardiologists don’t have experience treating congenital heart defects.

The Center helps close this gap in care. It’s one more example of how your support helps improve patients’ longterm survival and quality of life.

CARDIAC NEURODEVELOPMENT The Cardiac Neurodevelopment Program offers ongoing screenings from infancy through adolescence to children with congenital heart defects. Providers can identify the need for therapies to address academic, behavioral or psychosocial challenges, which evidence suggests children with congenital heart disease are more prone to experience. The program follows more than 250 patients and paves the way for improved patient outcomes.

CONE REPAIR PROCEDURE Phoenix Children’s Center for Heart Care is one of only a handful in the nation to offer children with Ebstein’s anomaly an alternative to valve replacement surgery.

Though rare, Ebstein’s anomaly can cause irregular heart rhythms, heart failure and sudden cardiac death. With the availability of the cone procedure, Phoenix Children’s now offers the gold standard of care for Ebstein’s anomaly, and local patients no longer have to travel out of state for care.

INHERITED ARRHYTHMIAS Inherited cardiac arrhythmias can be hard to diagnose and carry greater risk, including sudden cardiac death in young people. The Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic provides expertise and care closer to home, in addition to recent advances in diagnosis, treatment and management. This means patients can live with fewer restrictions and a better quality of life.
