l paisaje contemporáneo mexicano definitivamente se volvió otro a me­ diados de la década de los años noventa. Un género que, con tan larga tradición en la cultura fotográfica, no volvería a ser el mismo a partir de la práctica innovadora de una generación que en México surgió en la segunda mitad de esa década. Un cambio profundo que reactualizó los espacios na­ turales sobre el entorno, bien haya sido desde lo simbólico o desde una nueva estrategia hacia la espacialidad; o bien desde la trastocación meditada —que quiere decir la modificación— de lo visible. Con estas nuevas interacciones creativas un nuevo paisaje terminó por gestarse.

Era un hecho que los viejos esquemas de la práctica del paisaje se veian para entonces agotados. Y a no muchos artistas contemporáneos parecía importarles incidir sobre ellos, porque, ciertamente, ¿a quién le interesaba ya los espacios urbanos tan recurrentes o la persistente ruralidad tan vi­ sitada durante décadas? Y lo que se dejó ver fue que las indagaciones sobre el cuerpo, los objetos y la puesta en escena prevalecían sobre el ya muy viejo género del paisaje. Pero aquella generación de mediados de los noventa supo que había todo un nuevo territorio por explorar (literalmente). Lo intuyó de 5

otra manera. Y eso comenzó a detectarse desde la Séptima Bienal Nacional de Fotografía que se celebró en 1995. De manera apenas asomada, pero ahí apareció la serie Crónicas de acero, un gélido universo industrial, de la joven artista Laura Ba­rrón. Y eso fue algo sintomático.

A partir de ese año, Laura Barrón produjo dos exposiciones más (De-ciertos infinitos, 1995 y De-ciertos mares, 1996), hasta que en la Séptima Bienal Na­ cional (1997) obtuvo el principal premio con su serie Paradeisos, paisajes de absoluta desolación que no le ofrecían al espectador un sitio definible y en los que el laberinto hablaba de una urbe tan vacía como los mismos hori­ zontes expandidos que ahí se veían. “Esa es justamente la intención… —nos dijo poco después— la ciudad como si fuese el mar, el mar como el desierto y el laberinto como la forma en que yo concibo la ciudad y todo esto como un símbolo de algo infinito.”1 Después pudo verse que Barrón pertenecía a una generación que estaba gestando una nueva forma de asumir el paisaje. Clara­ mente no estaba sola, pero lo esencial fue que el paisaje comenzó a verse como un género renovado. Sobre todo desde lo personal, una acción que era algo nuevo. Porque el paisaje, digamos social, se dirigió hacia una acción pro­ fundamente individual, en el sentido de que lo relevante ya no era exhibir la urbe y su gente; o lo rural y su vastedad bravía, esto es, lo externo, sino lo pro­ fundamente íntimo: la visión del creador —y sus obsesiones— volcados sobre el espacio ahora modificable a imagen y semejanza —literal— de su creador.

Esto fue una nueva actitud. Y quizá no necesariamente hablamos de una particular generación (hubo artistas que ingresaron en el género habiendo surgido en la década de los ochenta, junto a aquellos que precisamente sur­ 1 Laura Barrón, Paradeisos, curaduría del autor, Galería Nina Menocal, México, abril-mayo, 1998.

gieron en los noventa), pero sin duda sí de prácticas simultáneas. Cada quien fue forjando su propio paisaje y ya reunidos todos esos creadores se pudo ver que ahí había una renovación. Sobre todo desde lo profundamente personal.

Eso hizo la diferencia. El entorno social, en esos años de mediados de los no­ venta, se había convertido en un absoluto caos (los asesinatos políticos, el e­rror de diciembre, el surgimiento del EZLN, la crisis económica de siempre) acaso por ello las visiones hacia lo externo se desecharon para emprender otros caminos, más hacia lo individual. Más en dirección de lo propio. Una nueva y particular historia desde la fotografía contemporánea que ya de por sí estaba generando nuevas visiones.

De ahí provienen las prácticas de artistas como Laura Cohen quien desde su percepción de lo simbólico trastocó los espacios para volcarse en lo vital y en la memoria (la manera en que recrea los lugares, el viaje, la iconografía profundamente personal). O bien Alfredo De Stéfano quien hizo suyo el de­ sierto como entorno de preocupaciones personales, con el cual se generó un acto ritual y en donde la intervención in situ termina por modificar el espacio hasta lo insólito. Pero en ello se ofrece también un sentido: un diálogo con lo terrenal y lo espacial en donde se establecen comuniones, digamos el ar­ tista interactuando con el desierto y el paisaje gestando una acción viva (el agua, el fuego, los vestigios depositados allí). Y si de intervenciones se trata, Ximena Berecochea en su serie Animal (1999) juega con el sentido ubicuo de las representaciones: la de una zoología desubicada (la imagen del delfín en­ medio del ondulante desierto), la representación de la vaca en un potrero que no la necesita por estar llena de otras vacas, digamos “reales”. Lo que Bereco­ chea hace es poner en evidencia el sentido de lo convencional: cómo vemos a los animales y cómo éstos “requieren” de su contexto.

Pero hay también otro sentido que se filtra a lo largo de las obras autorales, la de un neopictorialismo. No es este el espacio para explicar qué es el picto­ rialismo (en breves y simples palabras esto fue una práctica visual de finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, que quiso unir el acabado pictórico —del prerrafaelismo al impresionismo— con la técnica fotográfica), pero sí para interrogarse sobre su resurgimiento a finales del siglo XX. Si las muy di­ versas acciones creativas rehuyeron, particularmente en el paisaje, el hecho social se debió en mucho a algo: para qué recrear las agobiantes circunstan­ cias externas si en lo personal se tenía todo, vamos, la materia para recrear los universos individuales. Eso lo asumieron los artistas aquí reunidos, con una particular iconografía que, no de manera casual, proviene precisamente del pictorialismo: cielos borrascosos, grises o apenas iluminados; las som­ bras y la luz en permanente interacción y lucha entre sí; la espesura de lo bos­ coso; el acabado tenue y borroso; o lo etéreo, todo lo cual también habla de un sistema simbólico permeado de lo bucólico (el espacio protector, la serenidad del momento). Aunque, es claro, con sentidos diferentes (lo desolado perenne en Laura Barrón).

Digamos, Eric Jervaise —un erudito en la técnica de las imágenes históri­ cas— asume para sí el proceso de la goma bicromatada que Robert Demachy llevó a la maestría, como el mismo Jervaise lo hace en esos bosques ofrecidos a la contemplación plena (y apacible) con esas sombras cruzadas de lumino­ sidades. Fernando Varela, como muchos pictorialistas de antaño, se acerca a lo onírico, pero sus ejercicios visuales insertan un icono, que algunos verían como posmoderno (las torres eólicas, el toro del brandy Osborne), que ubica al espectador en nuevos tiempos. O el tránsito entre las urbes de Patricia La­ garde y Pía Elizondo. Ciudades las de ellas un tanto sombrías, con un cierto

acabado gótico. Ciudades solitarias que por momentos parecieran plenas de pesadumbre. Pero en cada una de sus particulares ciudades funciona algo distinto: en Pía se da el deambular del flâneur del que hablara Walter Benja­ min que se deslumbra por las fachadas, por las edificaciones, por los detalles mínimos, eso conforma una íntima fascinación con el espacio de la urbe para vol­verlo a mostrar a los otros que en algún momento pasaron por ahí de manera desapercibida. Y Lagarde quien pareciera que, paso a paso, acción por acción, va conformando también una memoria, imágenes que se recaban como testimonios de un vasto archivo de viajes. Memoria y viaje, actos y sucesos los de ella para permanecer en personalísimas imágenes. Y Gerardo Montiel Klint y el bosque como un territorio en donde todo se genera: el mis­ terio y el miedo, el hallazgo inesperado, lo apenas perceptible, lo sugerente.

El bosque como un espacio mítico —y vuelto espacio sagrado— que solicita adentrarse en sus tinieblas para encontrar en ellas su luminosidad. Ésta es así una historia reciente. La historia del cómo un grupo de artistas puso atención a un género que se creía agotado. Y cómo lo revitalizaron de la mejor manera, a título individual, sí, pero respondiendo también a un tiempo que ya lo solicitaba.

Reviews I: Mexican photographic landscape

T

he contemporary Mexican landscape definitely became another during the mid-nineties. A genre that, with such a long tradition in the photo­ graphic culture, would never be the same from the innovative practice of a generation that emerged in Mexico in the second half of the decade. A pro­ found change that renewed the natural areas on the environment, either since the symbolic or a new strategy toward spatiality, or since the thoughtful modi­ fication of the visible. With these new creative interactions, a new landscape eventually was conceived.

It was a fact that the old forms of the practice of landscape seemed ex­ hausted by then. And not many contemporary artists seem to mind affecting them, because, really, who was still interested in the recurrent urban spaces or in the persistent rurality so visited for decades? And what was evident was that the inquiries of the body, objects and staging outweighed the very old genre of landscape. But that generation of the mid-nineties knew there was a whole new territory to explore (literally). They sensed it otherwise. And that began to be detected since the Seventh National Photography Biennial held in 1995. In a subtle way, but there appeared the series Chronicles of Steel, an icy

industrial universe of the young artist Laura Barrón. And that was something symptomatic.

From that year, Laura Barron produced two more exhibitions (De-ciertos infinitos, 1995 and De-ciertos mares, 1996), until in the Seventh National Bi­ ennial (1997) she won the top prize with her series Paradeisos, landscapes of absolute desolation that did not offer the viewer a definable site and in which the maze talked about a city as empty as the expanded horizons that there were seen. “That is exactly what is intended ... —she said shortly after— the city as if it were the sea, the sea as the desert and the labyrinth as how I think of the city and all this as a symbol of something infinite”1 . After that, Barron was seen as part of a generation that was brewing a new way to asume the land­ scape. Clearly she was not alone, but the gist was that the landscape began to look like a renewed genre. Especially from the personal, an action that was completely new. Because the landscape, say the social one, headed profoundly towards an individual action, in the sense that the relevant was not to exhibit the city and its people, or the rural and its untamed vastness, that is, the exter­ nal, but the deeply intimate : the creators vision —and obsessions—dumped towards the space now editable in the image —literally— of its creator.

This was a new attitude. And it may not necessarily speak of a particular gen­ eration (there were artists who entered the genre, having emerged in the eight­ ies, with those who just emerged in the nineties), but it certainly does of simul­ taneous practices. Everyone was forging its own landscape and once all those creators gathered it was visible that a renewal was happening. Especially since the deeply personal. That made the difference. tions, the error of December, the emergence of the EZLN, the economic crisis as always) so perhaps the views towards the external were rejected to take other paths, towards the individual. More towards the own. A new and unique histo­ ry from contemporary photography that already was generating new insights.

Hence the practices of artists like Laura Cohen who, from her perception of the symbolic overturned spaces turning into life and memory (the way she recreates places, journeys, deeply personal iconography). Or Alfredo De Ste­ fano who endorsed the desert like an environment of personal concerns, who generated a ritual act and where the intervention of the site ends up disrupt­ ing the space to the unusual. But it also provides a sense: a dialogue with the earthly and the space where communions establish, say the artist interacting with the desert and the landscape brewing a live action (water, fire, the re­ mains deposited there). And if it comes to intervention, Ximena Berecochea in her series Animal (1999) plays with the ubiquitous sense of representations: that of a misplaced zoology (the image of the dolphin in the middle of the undulating desert), the representation of the cow in a pasture that does not need to be filled with other cows, say “real.” What Berecochea does is to high­ light the conventional: how we view animals and how they “require” their own context.

But there is another effect that seeps along the authors’ works, a newpicto­ rialism. This is not the space to explain what pictorialism is (in short, simple words this was a visual practice of the late nineteenth and early twentieth cen­ tury, who wanted to unite the pictorial look —from Pre-Raphaelite painting to impressionism— with the photographic technique), but to question their resurgence in the late twentieth century. If the very different creative actions shunned, particularly in the landscape, the social fact owed much to some­

thing: why recreate the overwhelming external circumstances if the personal had everything that, matter to recreate the individual universes. That was as­ sumed by the artists gathered here, with a particular iconography which, not incidentally, comes precisely from pictorialism: stormy skies, gray or barely lit, the shadows and light in constant interaction and struggle between them, the depths of the forest , the soft and fuzzy finish, or the ethereal, all of which also speaks of a symbolic system permeated by the bucolic (the protective space, the serenity of the moment). Although, of course, with different meanings (the desolate perennial in Laura Barron).

Say, Eric Jervaise —a scholar in historical images— assumes for itself the gum bichromate process that led Robert Demachy to expertise, as he does the same in those woods offered for full contemplation (and quiet) with those shadows crossed with luminosities. Fernando Varela, like many pictorialists of long ago, goes closer to the dreamlike, but his visual exercises insert an icon, which some would see as postmodern (energy windmills, the Osborne brandy bull), which places the viewer in new times. Or the traffic between the cities of Patricia Lagarde and Pía Elizondo. Cities somewhat shady, with some Gothic finish. Lonely cities that at times seem full of so­rrow. But in each of their par­ ticular cities works something different: in Pía there’s the wandering of Walter Benjamins’ flâneur that dazzles himself by the facades, buildings, the little de­ tails, that forms an intimate fascination with the space of the city to show it again to those that at some point pass through there unnoticed. And Lagarde who seems to, step by step, action by action, is also forming a memory, images that are collected as evidence of a vast travel archive. Memory and travel, the acts and events to stay in her very personal imagery. And Gerardo Montiel Klint and the forest as a land where everything is generated: the mystery and 13

fear, the unexpected finding, the barely perceptible, so suggestive. The forest as a mythical space and sacred space who asks seeking into its darkness to find, in them, the light.

So, this is a recent history. The story of how a group of artists paid attention to a genre that was believed exhausted. And how they revitalized it in the best way, individually, yes, but also responding to a time that requested it.

specializada desde 2009 en la fotografía contemporánea, Patricia Conde Galería es actualmente la única galería mexicana enfocada en promover prácticas fotográficas diversas realizadas por artistas mexicanos y extran­ jeros. La galería se interesa en propuestas sólidas, tanto en su originalidad como en su desarrollo creativo, incluyendo autores de trayectorias consagra­ das, medias, en proceso de crecimiento y emergentes.

Fundado y dirigido por Patricia Conde, el proyecto galerístico tiene la mi­ sión de promover de manera integral la fotografía contemporánea dentro del contexto artístico local e internacional. Así mismo, apuesta por difundir en México la obra de fotógrafos de otras latitudes del mundo.

Además de atender la participación ferial y colaboraciones museísticas e institucionales, la galería propone ser referencia para el coleccionismo cons­ tituido e incentivar aquél en el público joven. Así, Patricia Conde Galería de­ viene en una alternativa incluyente para el escenario fotográfico en México.

pecialized in contemporary photography since 2009, Patricia Conde Galería is currently the only Mexican gallery promoting diverse photo­ graphic practices produced by Mexican and foreign artists. It is interested in solid firms, in their creative development as well as in the originality of re­ nowned, intermediate and emerging artists’ proposals.

Founded and directed by Patricia Conde Juaristi, the gallery project has the mission of unveiling Mexican Contemporary Photography in the interna­ tional artistic sphere.

The gallery focuses in two main fields; on one side its participation in art fairs, and on the other side, through collaborations with museums and insti­ tutions. Our mission is that of protruding the photographic practices within the Mexican and international art market. Thus, Patricia Conde Galería estab­ lishes itself as an inclusive and independent alternative to the photographic scene in Mexico.
