VIRUS Al iniciar el confinamiento en marzo de 2020, Antoine d’Agata decide lanzarse a las calles de París. Renuncia a apoyarse en el código visual del fotorreportaje que, como miembro de la Agencia Magnum, domina. Elige una cámara térmica, ciega a los detalles y a los colores habituales de las cosas. Así, sus imágenes resultan de la diferencia de temperatura de las cosas. Amarillo, muy caliente, vivo. Negro, frío, muerto.

La ciudad luce vacía y espectral, apocalíptica. La transitan figuras solitarias, a veces en filas con la ahora distintiva separación de metro y medio. El espacio público exterior sólo está habitado por vagabundos abandonados al frío y a su suerte. Y los espacios interiores son las salas de hospitales. Ahí médicos, enfermos, aparatos, tubos. El código de color se torna dramático, urgente, porque refleja la oposición definitiva de lo vivo y lo muerto.

Si bien es imposible identificar personas y cosas, resulta evidente que lo que se representa reiteradamente en las 1111 imágenes que conforman la obra son experiencias que atañen a todos. Soledad, vacío, enfermedad, desesperación. Pero, también, compasión y luz: la eterna lucha por vencer la oscuridad, el miedo, el frío.

En esta instalación, tanto el exceso como el orden son parte del sentido: en una propuesta relevante que se integra a la reconocida obra de d’Agata como fotógrafo errante, de situaciones límite y urgentes. En esta exposición también se muestran fotografías representativas del artista, con énfasis en las producidas en México. Así mismo, se exhibirán dos videos: Oscurana (2018) y Virus (2020).

VIRUS When the confinement began in March 2020, Antoine d'Agata decided to take to the streets of Paris. He renounces relying on the visual code of photojournalism that, as a member of the Magnum Agency, he dominates. He choose a thermal camera, blind to details and the usual colors of things. Thus, his images result from the difference in temperature of things. Yellow, very hot, alive. Black, cold, dead.

The city looks empty and ghostly, apocalyptic. It is walked by lonely figures, sometimes in rows with the now distinctive five-foot spacing. The outdoor public space is inhabited only by homeless people left to the cold and to their fate. And the interior spaces are the hospital rooms. Doctors, patients, devices, tubes. The color code becomes dramatic, urgent because it reflects the definitive opposition of the living and the dead.

Although it is impossible to identify people and things, it is clear that what is repeatedly represented in the 1111 images that make up the work are the experiences that concern everyone. Loneliness, emptiness, illness, despair. But also compassion and light: the eternal struggle to overcome darkness, fear, cold.

In this installation, both excess and order are part of the meaning: in a relevant proposal that is integrated into the renowned work of d’Agata as a wandering photographer, of extreme and urgent situations. This exhibition also shows representative photographs of the artist, with an emphasis on those produced in Mexico. Likewise, two videos will be exhibited: Oscurana (2018) and Virus (2020).

ANTOINE D´AGATA Marsella, 1961 Después de dejar Francia a inicios de los ochenta y empezar su vida errante, Antoine d’Agata estudia fotografía en 1990 en el Centro Internacional de Fotografía (ICP) bajo la tutela de Larry Clark y Nan Goldin. En esos años empieza a trabajar para agencias fotográficas y a exhibir sus series personales. Desde 2008 es miembro de la agencia Magnum Photos.

Su fotografía se distingue por una perspectiva personal, colaborativa y experimental, en la que el fotógrafo participa en la misma experiencia que retrata. Fuertemente marcada su estrategia por la “deriva” del Situacionismo y por la insurrección vital y estética ante el orden establecido, su obra busca transmitir la vivencia de la violencia, el caos y la irracionalidad. Sea a través del sexo y la droga, en espacios cerrados, o de la proyección de lo oscuro sobre lo cotidiano y exterior, d’Agata refleja en sus fotos la experiencia de quienes viven atrapados en los bordes del orden capitalista. Con el cuerpo como moneda compartida, los seres retratados encuentran transmitir la experiencia de la vida desnuda en las imágenes del fotógrafo. ___ Marseille, 1961 After leaving France in the early eighties and beginning his wandering life, Antoine d’Agata studied photography in 1990 at the International Center of Photography (ICP) under the tutelage of Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. In those years, he began to work for photographic agencies and to exhibit his personal series. Since 2008 he has been a member of the Magnum Photos agency.

His photography is distinguished by a personal, collaborative and experimental perspective, in which the photographer participates in the same experience that he portrays. His strategy is strongly marked by the "drift" of Situationism and by the vital and aesthetic insurrection before the established order, his work seeks to transmit the experience of violence, chaos and irrationality. Whether through sex and drugs, in closed spaces, or through the projection of the dark on the everyday and outside, d’Agata reflects in his photos the experience of those who live trapped on the edges of the capitalist order. With the body as a shared currency, the beings portrayed find transmitting the experience of life naked in the photographer's images.
