Some like It Hot THERE’S A GREAT LINE AT THE VERY END OF BILLY WILDER’S ICONIC MOVIE, SOME LIKE IT HOT. JACK LEMMON TURNS TO HIS SUITOR, TAKES OFF HIS WIG AND CONFESSES ‘OSGOOD, I’M A MAN’. ‘WELL, NOBODY’S PERFECT’ IS THE SIMPLE REPLY. Imperfection seems to be the order of the day, with so many business and social plans thwarted by track-and-trace. But hope is in the air, and you’ll find signs of it throughout this edition.
Talking of liking it hot, take a look at Royston Braganza’s article for a great insight into the hot trends driving the ESG and Impact Investing agendas. The urge to do good and do well is increasingly high on the agenda for many private clients, and it’s reassuring to see that so many new opportunities to invest are emerging – not least Royston’s brilliant concept of Impact Bonds.
As I write this temperatures are climbing here in the UK and we’re looking forward to a touch of summer after last weeks torrential rain. But I’m pretty sure it won’t be getting as hot here as in Singapore in the coming weeks. The city state is hotting up for family offices too, with a recent fivefold increase in affluent families choosing to base their family office here. Reading Alice Quek’s article, it’s easy to see why.

EDITOR’S INTRO
Secure communication is a heated topic. The pandemic catapulted us all into multiple online video meetings, but as we return to a more normal environment, the question of security is an important one. Many clients enjoyed the ease of quick Zoom and Teams meetings, the next challenge is to ramp up the precautions. Jackie Breadner has some great perspectives in her article. Read now
Feeling the heat or fired up by the new normal - whatever the temperature where you are, I’m sending warm regards from the entire PCD team!

SUMMER TIME... AND THE LIVING IS E. A .S .Y !
Summer Time… and the Living is E.A.S.Y.!!! “There are decades where nothing happens and then there are weeks in which decades happen”. I came across this saying some time ago; it certainly fits like a glove to the times we are in. In his introduction to the ‘Goalkeepers Report 2020’, Bill Gates writes that 25 years of development has been wiped out in 25 weeks of the pandemic, calling what we are facing “mutually exacerbating catastrophes.” A healthcare crisis which turned into an economic crisis and which then snowballed into a humanitarian crisis costing the economy trillions of dollars, while adversely impacting hundreds of millions of jobs and even more lives.
#BuildBackBetter but also greener, cleaner and more inclusive. Globally many funds – CDC, KKR, BlackRock, BNP, AXA and other investment houses and pension funds are moving billions, if not trillions of dollars into what’s being called the “just transition”. Impact investing or ESG investing or Sustainability Financing are other names that have been interchangeably used. The Global Impact Investing Network estimates over $715 billion is the impact investing AUM. Sharing below some impact investing themes based on our work in the development sector and ideas I presented at the UN General Assembly in New York, while discussing ways to bridge the $30 trillion financing-gap to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We proposed the concept of SDG Impact Bonds, where individuals, family offices, trusts, foundations and funds would be able to participate either as investors or outcome funders, with ticket-sizes as low as $1M in these ‘micro-bonds’.
“Never waste a good crisis”, was a term often bandied about during the earlier Global Financial Crisis around 2008. It would be a tragedy if we allow the same inefficiencies, inequalities and indifference pre-COVID to continue to affect our policy and social development agenda as the world plans for the Next Normal (many are now no longer calling it the ‘new normal’). We need to plan for the Next Normal now, so that we not only

E Environment:
Advancement of Women:
Investing in the environment is not new. But it certainly is hotter now than ever before (pun intended ;) with it’s scope growing beyond green bonds and clean energy with efficient mobility, sustainable agriculture, alternative protein and a wide array of new subsectors. As the world moves to build back better – cleaner and greener will be crucial. All eyes fixed on Glasgow for COP26. Grameen Impact has pioneered an SDG#7 Impact Bond for financing environment-focused SMEs, with decarbonization goals.
Gender-lens investing is one of the key themes likely to continue to dominate impact investing. Microfinance has attracted billions in investments from a wide range of investors because of the unique double bottom line returns it provides. In India, Grameen Capital has been catalytic in scaling up the growth of the sector; and the microfinance association I chaired, served over 52 million poor women borrowers who were provided microloans by its members. The world’s first-of-it’s kind SDG#5 Impact Bond by Grameen Impact was launched for training of tribal women to become poultry farmers. Over the past 12 months we have launched 2 COVID Impact Bonds for the training of women artisans in the making of masks and other pandemic related products building not only their incomes and assets, but their self-worth.

Sustainable Livelihoods/ Job Creation:
Yield-increasing Agriculture/ Ag-tech:
As the world build back better, bringing people back into jobs or equipping them for creating micro and small businesses will be crucial. Skilling, re-skilling and up-skilling will be the need of the hour, and offering these over digital platforms will make them even more optimal. Huge investments are likely to flow into entities and platforms that support livelihoods and jobs. Grameen Impact’s pioneering SDG#8 Impact Bond was likely the world’s first for-profit pay-forperformance instrument with multiple implementing partners who provided skilling, placement and mentoring services.
In most countries, one sector that has held its head above the water, while others have de-grown, is agriculture. Expect to see a lot more investments, innovation and use of technology – block chain, drones, AI-ML, etc. – in helping to increase crop yields, farm productivity and farmer income. Investing options across the food valuechain are putting this sector centerof-plate, literally! Grameen Impact is currently working on an SDG2 Agri Impact Bond for financing social enterprises in this sector.
So there you have it. Some key sectors to invest in – so you can do well and do good at the same time. > > > In the words of the bard of Avon, “There is a tide… Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune.”
So this summer (even if you’re not from the Northern Hemisphere) strike, it’s HOT! 7

NEXT GEN PROFILE: GARY DONALD
Next Gen Profile: Gary Donald I've been driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of LGT Vestra US and its values as a business. I knew that by committing myself to the team and developing the business, I would be supported in career progression and that my achievements would be recognised. My constant drive to progress and develop has been further inspired by the commitment and attitude of both friends and colleagues. Their constant encouragement kept me going throughout the many hours of studying for my professional exams and continues to motivate me.
What prompted your move to LGT Vestra in 2015?
In 2010 I took the opportunity to relocate from Glasgow to London with Barclays Wealth, moving from operations to a client-facing role. Despite working with great colleagues and clients, I made the decision to move to LGT Vestra. I wanted to further develop my skills through their fresh and entrepreneurial approach to wealth management. Shortly after joining LGT Vestra, I learned of their specialist subsidiary which focuses on helping clients with connections to the US. Not one to pass up a challenge, I made the internal move to LGT Vestra US in 2016.
What advice would you give to a young professional looking to start a career in wealth management?
The advice I would give myself five years ago would be to stay committed to the process because a career in wealth management doesn’t happen overnight. You need to manage your own expectations as it takes time to complete the professional qualifications. You also have to manage your time wisely – there will be days where you have to
