Since becoming a Porsche Club member in 2005, In the next few months you will see articles written I’ve been impressed with the large number of volun- by the Treasurer, Vice President, Secretary and Social teers who step forward and make the Club a success. Even though were just half-way through the year, it’s time to begin planning for 2010. Four members of the ten-member Board of Directors will be “termed out” (i.e. served two years) later this year. The positions are Vice-President, Social Director, Treasurer and Secretary. Perhaps you’ve considered getting involved by contributing your time and talent to Club operations. This is your opportunity to help chart the course of our Club through 2010. You’ve no doubt enjoyed many club events. You’ll find that serving on the Board is even more rewarding.

Anchor Steam Beer Tour Monday, September 28, 2009
The brewers at the Anchor Steam Beer brewery in San Francisco have agreed to show us how they make their beer and why they believe it to be the best beer on the planet. Then, to prove their point, they will let us taste the result of their efforts in their beautiful tasting room. (Note: their samples are generous.) The tour will start at the brewery at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 28th and, with the tasting, will last about two hours. Consequently, we will be leaving Sacramento at 8:30 A.M. for a leisurely drive to San Francisco. The meeting place is the Tower Theatre parking lot, Broadway and Land Park Drive (16th Street), behind the theatre, across the street from Starbucks. At the conclusion of the tour/tasting we will have lunch in the area, or, for that matter, you are free to have lunch anywhere you wish. It is San Francisco, after all, and the sky’s the limit on good eating there. Since these tours are very popular, and sell out early, the good folks at the brewery have requested that we notify them the number of our party by September 1st. The take home message is to drink before you’re thirsty and enough so you have to urinate at least once every couple hours.
We chose to drive Porsche because we expect the most from our cars. We carefully check everything before we enter an autocross or a DE event. Which of us would autocross without knowing precisely what our tire pressures are? Who would autocross low on brake fluid or oil? Why would we not keep the driver in tiptop condition? Top off your fluids and perform at your best and A true athlete seldom forgets hydration, and neither should you. enjoy the events even more. An autocross or DE (Drivers Education) event that takes place in summer temperatures will quickly put the body into a fluidvolume-deficit. In fact, we can sweat liters of fluid during these events. Summer is in full swing and we Porsche people are spending more time outside in the heat. While we normally take care of our basic needs almost reflexively we tend to neglect or delay taking care of these needs when we are absorbed in competition.
How do we lose heat? When the temperature is very high and we are very active, we produce heat much like our engines do when it is hot and we demand more of them. To cool ourselves, we do a couple of physiological things. First, we sweat – blood vessels near the skin surface dilate and pores bring the sweat to the skin surface. Some of us glisten while others drip. The cooling takes place when the air evaporates the sweat. The second way we lose heat is to breathe just a little faster. Both of these methods of shedding the excess heat take place at the expense of body fluid. We sweat we lose water. We breathe and lose water with each breath we take. The signs and symptoms of a fluid volume deficit range from the annoying to the life threatening. The first sign is thirst which is our body’s way of telling us to drink. But what happens when thirst comes at turn 5 at Laguna Seca and your run group session is just starting? If you ignore thirst, it eventually leads to a dry mouth. Ignore this, and body aches and headaches will come. Beyond this, dizziness, confusion and other more serious symptoms can occur. The literature states that we can lose up to a third of our blood volume before symptoms occur. In the case of heat and activity losses, we don’t lose actual blood but the volume contracts as fluid is lost to sweat and breathing. What might be as much as 5 liters in some of us can contract to 3 or 4 liters. Besides making us feel bad and perhaps more importantly to many of us, perform poorly, this can be life threatening as the incidence of heart attack and stroke goes up when blood is thicker. So how much fluid do we need to drink? The average person who weighs 154 pounds or 70kg (lots of above average people around these days!) wakes up about 880ml short of a balanced fluid volume. They have a continuous need of about 110ml per hour throughout the day. You can easily see how the pressure to get ready and get going to an autocross or DE event can defer our fluid needs for later, sometimes much later.

SVR’s Zone 7 Concours seemed to have something for everyone this year. Niello’s generous offer for test drives of new Porsches was a huge hit with our club members. The 997 with PDK transmission was the most popular car tested with the Cayman coming in a close second. New to the Concours weekend this year was a dinner on Saturday evening.
To top the day off, Niello offered club members a 20% to 25% discount on Porsche Selection Merchandise and Jim Weber, Niello’s Service Manager, announced that in July he will be offering a special of 50% off labor for Air Cooled Porsches and 20% off parts and accessories. Not a bad way to end a wonderful day. Scheduled for the evening was a presentation by The Racers Group, but a last minute race schedule conflict kept them from our event. Everyone seemed to take the change in stride though and with 65 club members attending the dinner there was plenty to talk about.
We would like to thank the many club members who helped make this event such a success and also the staff at Niello for allowing us to use their wonderful facility. Water, Water ----- EVERYWHERE!!!! Porsche Parade 2009 by SVR Member Rik Larson Keystone, Colorado The 54th Porsche Parade organizers had been preaching to us for weeks and months before the event to make sure that we drank LOTS of water before we arrived in Colorado (9300 + feet). And if that was not enough prodding, there were water bottles, water glasses, and pitchers of water everywhere you went ----- the conference center, goodie store, at the social hours ---EVERYWHERE!!!! And because of the elevation, drinking much alcohol was likely to make you tipsy very quickly. Needless to say, the alcohol consumed at this Porsche Parade did not set any records. There were a couple of major surprises at the Porsche Parade : the “preview” of the Panamera (more like the North American introduction that will occur at the Pebble Beach Concours in August); and the lack of Porsche AG representatives and Porsche family at the event. Seems that the discussions between VW and Porsche as to who was going to own who were in deep talks. The Panamera “preview” is up on YouTube (check out the information at www.pca.org, and click on the PCA News button). More than 800 cars (1800 people) attend the event hosted by Alpine Mountain and Rocky Mountain Regions. Zone 7 had more than 50 cars attend. Loma Prieta Region put together a “Posse to the Porsche Parade” while other regions traveled to the event in small groups and some even flew. One place that was not to be missed was Mom’s café in Salina, Utah ----- outstanding breakfasts and lunches.
(Photo by Greg Adams from GGR of Zone 7 folks that cleaned house by winning 3 of the 4 classes in the TSD rally) Many of the Zone 7 entrants got together on Sunday night to socialize and get acuminated to the altitude (giving new meaning to the term “attitude adjustment”). Parade “check-in” occurred on Monday with the traditional welcome party held that evening. It was a buffet style event. Things took a while to get started so some eagle-eyed folks noticed that the dessert buffet table was unguarded and started ‘sampling’ early. The concours was held on Tuesday (everyone essentially bussed out to the site). Two cars from Zone 7 were entered: the Johansens from SVR with their 928, and Su Kemper and Cam Warren with their yellow ‘pretzel’ Targa. The TSD rally was held on Wednesday and Zone 7 repeated their performance at the 2004 Fort Worth Parade by winning 3 of the 4 classes. Thursday was the autocross (can you believe the performance problems at 9300 feet?). It was a first and second gear course. And if you took your Cayman and left it in first gear (rev limiter time), then you won your class in the Showroom Stock category. Friday was the tech quiz (I took dead last again in class). It was also the day for numerous tech sessions. Terry Zaccone made a presentation on “Your Porsche was born to autocross”. You can check out all the events (results, photos, etc.) at www.porscheparade2009.com. The September issue of PANORAMA should have most of the issue dedicated to the Parade. The 55th Porsche Parade (July 2010) will be held in St. Charles, Illinois (take Interstate 80 east for 2000 miles and turn left about an hour before you get to Chicago). Cookie agreed to contact SVR’s Tech Chairperson, Roger Walker, and ask him to follow-up with Jim and coordinate the articles.
Membership Director: Doug Klein SVR has 578 primary members with 475 affiliate members for a total of 1053. The club also has 3 dual members. SVR had 8 new members last month. 2 members transferred-in and 5 transferred to other regions. Social Director: Babette Hatten Cookie reported for Babette and 4 Dinner and Tour budgets were discussed and approved by the board. Webmaster: John Murphy John reported that hits on the website have stabilized around 55,000 per month with nearly 20% representing visitors from over 50 countries. The Classified Ads, Drifter and Photo Page are consistently amongst the most popular destinations. Clearly the Drifter is being read by folks other than SVR members. The July Drifter was visited nearly 1600 times in the first two days it was posted. SVR only has about 1050 members.
BOARD MEMBER REPORTS: Charity: Tambra Kroetz Tambra submitted a budget for the September 13 Charity Auction. After a lengthy discussion a motion was made and seconded Vice President: Bill Keegan to subsidize the event by $100.00 so that all the proceeds from Bill updated the calendar for board members. the auction could go to the Charity. August Membership Report by Doug Klein, Membership Director The Sacramento Valley Region of the Porsche Club of America has 578 regular members and 475 affiliate members (husband, wife, son, etc) for a total of 1,053. This past month, we had 9 new members plus 1 transfer-in from the Intermountain Region in Utah for a total of 10 new SVR members. On the other hand, it’s the time of year when people pack up and move. Five members transferred to other regions, the largest number of any single month this year. Compared to one year ago, membership has declined a remarkably small 5.7%, a testament to Porsche owners’ camaraderie and love of their cars.

Mendocino 2009 Tour October 30th – November 1st (Three Days, Two Nights) This is a 3-day, 2-night tour to the Mendocino area. And because Hallowe’en occurs that Saturday, we will have a party. And then take an extra hour of sleep because it is also the end of daylight savings time. This is a very informal tour. We will have some kite flying (weather permitting), miniature golf, and some socials activities. We have several hotels/inns that we work with to house our group. The 2007 tour had over 65 cars. We manage a block of rooms at the Hill House (contact is Tom and Tambra Kroetz at 916.989.1954), the MacCallum House Suites (contact is Frederick and Susan Rauch at 916.595.3371) and the Little River Inn (contact is Rik and Lettie Larson at 916.481.6084). We suggest that you make reservations early as the coast area tends to fill up on the weekends (even during Winter). Schedule: Leave Niello Porsche in Rocklin on Friday morning; lunch stop in the wine country; social on Friday evening. Saturday is open for kite flying, golf, shopping, etc. followed a Saturday night party. Sunday is also open, with folks generally returning home in groups. Don’t miss out on this popular tour; we even have members from other regions join us for a good time. And remember: Don’t turn your back to the ocean.

Been curious about the magnificant brownstone that dominates the Ione skyline? Now’s your chance to explore this 1890s Romanesque Revival building, while having a grand time noshing, tasting and socializing. Castle Tour. We’ll start with a docent-guided tour just for our group at 1:30, before the Castle is opened to the general public at 3:00 (and closes at 6:00). Drink. ood grief, it can’t be August already. Oh but it is. The big stores are starting to show winter clothes! Macy’s has already put winter clothes on sale! Well, the GOODIE STORE is still selling our usual cool stuff- T-shirts, caps, and polo shirts. The big news is a large number of special items that we can close out for much less than usual-really!! You may have seen some of them being sold by Cookie at the last AX. Cookie has the inventory and if you Email her, I am sure she will give some ideas on size, etc. Don’t miss this sale! Warning-wearing our shirts can make members of the opposite sex chase after you! Maybe it makes them as horny as a four horned antelope. What, you say there is no such animal—well, I beg to differ! Yes, there is such an antelope, in India, named the fourhorned antelope (not very imaginative). The creature has the usual two horns between his ears and a smaller pair just over his eyes. Notice I wrote “he” and “his”. It’s the male who has the four horns, while the female is hornless (wouldn’t you just know it!). With the male extraordinarily horny but the female not horny at all, isn’t it amazing that they ever have any little four horns? Aren’t these ads educational—it’s enough to make you honk!
