Cookie’s Crumbs

by Yvonne “Cookie” Anderson, 2009 SVR President First of all, I would like to thank everyone who voted for me to be your SVR President during 2009. I am looking forward to a wonderful year that will have both some new and some traditional events scheduled throughout the year. Jeff Kinder deserves special thanks from all of us for taking time out of his busy schedule in order to develop the new electronic voting ballot used in this past election. Thanks to Jeff ’s efforts, it was a big success. Our 2008 Christmas party, which was held at the Aerospace Museum of California, was a big hit with all of the attendees. We had a lovely candlelight dinner catered by Rudy’s Hideaway and with table decorations created by our own Darlene Byerley. Two benefactors who wish to remain anonymous paid for the cost of having two planes on display inside the museum just for the evening. You know who you are, and thank you for your help in making the evening fun. As usual, Dick MacFarlane, our own SVR disc jockey, provided the music. The first important event in 2009 will be the annual event-planning meeting on January 8th. (See page 3 in this issue for details.) It looks like we have many interesting events planned throughout the year. Not all dates are filled, so if you are interested in doing an event or dinner please feel free to give me a call at 916.988.6534 or SVR Social Director Babbette Hatten at 916.772.5280. I would like to see more of our newer members become involved in and helping out with some of these events. If you would like to help out or chair an event, but would like some help in planning it, give me a call or Babette.

Drifting Back – January 2009 by Larry Wilson 30 Years Ago (January 1979) When the dust cleared and the ballots were counted, SVR had a new board of directors for 1979: President -- Ted Colbert; Vice President -- C.C. Craig; Secretary - Gwen Clark; Treasurer Paul Baldarelli; Activities Chair - Stan Breyfogle; Rally Chair - Jim Karver; Tech Chair - Dwight Mitchell; Social Chairs - Bess Feil and Kern Breaux; Publicity Chairs - Mary Peters and Lendine Nelson; Drifter Editor - Vicki Willis (Jan-Mar) and Trische Robertson (Apr-Dec); and Past President - Paul Bates. And, on a larger playing field, Paul Bates was selected Zone 7 Representative as white smoke exited a chimney atop the PCA Chapel. The January 12 dinner meeting at Posey’s Cottage was a culinary dress rehearsal for CRAB 8 with Bess Feil in charge; $12.50 for all the cracked crab you could eat. The big news, however, was the January 14 Rallye de Busse - a rally school by Rik Larson which gave an on-course look at some typical rally situations by taking participants on a short tour using a bus as the classroom. But wait, there was more! Just before the bus fired up, each participant was given a run in the Laguna Grand Prix Mini-Formula One Cars. Wow! Jim Karver said it was a great event. 20 Years Ago (January 1989) After the precincts closed and the ballots fed into electronic ballot-counting devices, the wire services had the news. The new SVR board of directors for 1989 were: President - Randy Vidmar; Vice President - Sally Boeck; Secretary - Mark Smedley; Treasurer - Sara Clements; Social Director - Elizabeth Carr; Competition Director - Kern Breaux; Membership Director Arlene Pluth; Drifter Editor - Larry Wilson; and Past President - Jim McDade. Competition Director Kern Breaux held forth during SVR’s January 5th activity planning meeting/party, and extra chairs had to be imported to take care of the larger-than-expected crowd including Social Director Elizabeth Carr and Bob Dennison, Ron and Sally Boeck, Suzanne Planz, Jim McMahen, Karen Mangin, Randy and Marcy Vidmar, Bob Peake, Carol Nye, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Rik Larson, Ken and Marcella Mitchell, Gooses Too, Three Rally with Phillip Marks as rallymaster on Friday, January 20, a wonderful, clear January night, brought out 25 rally cars to start the event, and 25 rally cars finished the event. No one got lost! SVR rally teams did well. Helen Ashuckian and J. Toney finished first overall (and 1st Expert Equipped Class). Robert Dennison, Elizabeth Carr and daughter, Amelia, won the Beginner Class and Nikki Duncan finished second and Allen Rosenberg 10th in the same class. Event workers were Rik and Lettie Larson, John Clever, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Mike Willis, Sally Boeck, Stan Breyfogle, Dena King, J. Toney, and Larry and Pat Wilson.

Zone 7 Rep, Bud Behrens (Yosemite Region) announced that presidents of nine of the eleven Zone 7 regions met January 21 and established the 1989 Zone 7 autocross and concours schedule which included seven autocross events (one by SVR) and seven concours events (none by SVR). The rally schedule would be determined later. 10 Years Ago (January 1999) SVR officers for 1999 were Bob Peake as President, Tim Fleming as Vice President, Jose Uranga as Secretary, Masuo Robinson as Treasurer, Kellie Finley as Social Chair, Cindy McKenzie as Membership Chair, Glen Brooksby as Competition and Safety Chair, Larry Clark as Newsletter Editor, and Rik Larson as Past President. Larry Clark moved the DRIFTER publishing process from the club’s Macintosh computer to a PeeCee platform and nevertheless did a terrific job despite that handicap. Judy Hanna served as Associate Editor bringing great stories to DRIFTER sheets. Larry and Judy’s newsletter work during 1999 would later earn them (and the club) a terrific third-place finish (Class 4) in the annual PCA newsletter contest with the award presented during the PCA Porsche Parade held in Sacramento in the summer of 2000. The January 8 SVR Planning Meeting at the Round Table Pizza on Greenback Lane featured Tim Fleming working the crowd on the microphone and Kellie working the flip charts to record suggestions for 1999 events. Tentative events and chairpeople included salmon fishing (Ambrozewicz), wine tours (McMahen), McClellan AFB museum tour (Vidmar/Weddle), progressive dinner tour (Swenson/Hanna), oyster tour and barbecue (Catherwood/McKee), Octoberfest (Sisson), and a visit to the shooting range (Vidmar). In advertising her January 29 White Elephant Gift Exchange, event chair Tambra Kroetz pleaded for members to unload those unwanted holiday gifts at the annual gift exchange at Chuck’s Grille in Folsom. And, she got treasures! How about a Volkswagen toilet paper dispenser finally won by Kent Brandon. Or, a gargoyle with lights won by the Jeff Kinder. Or, better yet, faux-leopard fur handcuffs with key won by Cindy McKenzie. Wow, does that get you worked up, or what?

PCA/SVR at the 2008 Los Angeles International Auto Show by Dan Rowland and Bill Keegan

O

nce again, Bill and I had the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles for the 2008 LA International Auto Show. This year we had press passes and attended the two early “press days,” starting on Tuesday the 18th. A little finagling even got Bill a pass allowing access to the media center and all the cool manufacturers’ release information. Most had very informative, and expensive, literature and CDs. Since Los Angeles has one of the highest concentrations of luxury and exotic car buyers in the world, we expected to see some very special presentations. And we were not disappointed. The press passes included two days of scheduled “news releases” by all the manufacturers represented at the show. Forty world and North American debuts included everything from the smart “Brabus” presented by Roger Penske, the Ferrari “California”, and the new Lamborghini “Gallardo Spyder” LP560-4. We even found out what the numbers mean. Our days started with a free buffet breakfast that rivaled Marie Callender’s and proceeded through multiple 25- to 30minute “press release” introductions of each manufacturer’s model debuts and changes, along with introductions of several “one-off ” prototypes and concepts. We saw the new Mini “E”, the LOTUS “Evora”, and the Mercedes “Fascination.” Nissan also introduced a new 370Z and modifications to the “Cube.” It was surprising to see the dedication to the youth market by the Pacific Rim manufacturers and the lack of any real marketing presence by the domestics. Even though GM had more floor space than anyone else, they had fewer cars and even less people.

the new 2009 Boxster and Cayman, both with PDK, with the S versions at 310HP and 320HP respectively. Also of interest is a new seat, called the folding GT, available in all models as an option. Very much like the GT2 seat only it folds in the middle for rear access.

We returned the second day to get a picture of the 550 and asked a “suit” worker to take our picture. He reluctantly did so, and when we asked for his personal information to credit him for the photo, he gave his card as Robert Escamillo, Professional Photographer/Illustrator, Porsche AG. He moved back and forth and shuffled us around a bit before snapping the picture, but the result is definitely a keeper. My personal trip highlight was my first time using the paddle shifters on a 500HP V-10 M5 BMW with a 7-speed doubleclutch sports automatic. What a treat!

The highlight event for us was, of course, the Porsche display. As we entered, we saw a 1954 550A RS Spyder on a raised no-touch display. We arrived early to get good seats ahead of the cameras and media, but we had third row seats behind the dignitaries and guests. Two rows ahead of us was none other than Jerry Seinfeld. It turns out the 550 on display was his “donation” to the event. We were able to see the world debut of the drifter

A night In Paris (prepared in Rocklin, CA) by Randy Vidmar

W

hen Maureen and I decided to attend the SVR Charity Auction this year, we had no idea we would be ending up with a night in Paris. It happened because we made the winning bid on a very unusual gift. SVR members Jim and Sheila McDade and Barbie Flores put their their culinary talents up for auction, for which they would prepare a surprise European dinner for four. We shared the bid and the evening with Dave and Susan Hoffman as well. On November 7th, our three chefs, who were all dressed in tuxedos, greeted us at the door of their lovely home in Rocklin. Our evening started with very cordial conversation, wine and appetizers consisting of various patés, crackers, cornichions, and Provencal Rosemary Almonds to die for. These almonds are a specialty of Sheila’s. I must say they were oh so tasty and turned out to be the perfect introduction for what was ahead. We all brought wine. Dave and Susan brought two very exceptional wines that we enjoyed throughout the dinner. These wines were a Châteneuf du Pape and a Ceferino - both excellent and smooth reds. Knowing Dave and Susan, these wines were undoubtedly carefully hand picked for the occasion. After partaking of the excellent appetizers, we were then seated by our hosts at one of the most beautiful table settings I have seen in a very long time. There were many personal touches by our hosts, including winecork-mounted nameplates, a main centerpiece, and at each setting a personalized menu. Chef Jimmy prepared the most sumptuous Boeuf Parisienne to each person’s individual taste. I watched him do this; he actually used two cups of Seagram’s 7 whiskey to prepare this dish! Chef Jimmy watched this main course very very closely, as whiskey can be very difficult to work with when used in cooking. All three chefs were very well prepared and everything was spot on time. The entire meal was exceptional.Maureen said she could cut the Boeuf Parisienne with a fork and it melts in your mouth. You don’t see this kind of treatment and meal in any restaurant that I know of, and without paying megadollars.Chef Barbie prepared the Haricots Verts with toasted almonds that had such a light, crisp and delicate taste. These green beans were superb. Chef Sheila had prepared Gratin Savoyard, which is a scalloped and sliced potato. These potatoes were oh so delicate, thin and prepared with Swiss cheese, Parmesan cheese and turnips. This all resulted in a very unique taste that must be experienced to be appreciated. 10

In the true French tradition, the salad is served after the main dish. Chef Sheila had wrapped living butter lettuce in a thinly cut cucumber slice and a splash of French Vinaigrette dressing. Now I know why the French serve dinner this way. The salad cleans the palette very nicely. Ah, now for dessert. Chefs Sheila and Barbie served a unique desert of poached pears with raspberry sorbet. What a fitting ending for an absolutely superb dinner. It must be also noted that each and every dish was prepared from scratch and with painstaking care. This all turned out to be one of the very best and very special dinners we have had in a long time. What made it every more special for Maureen and me is that we were surrounded with very special friends as well. This was really a very special evening. Thank you Jimmy, Sheila, and Barbie. The people who did not bid on this special dinner, really missed out. The annual SVR charity auction is a very special event to begin with, and just once in a while, something very special is offered. We’ve been attending this charity auction for over 20 years and have never been disappointed. This dinner came straight from the hearts of Jim, Sheila, and Barbie. The detailed planning, purchasing all the right ingredients, preparing all the food, and creating the impeccable timing to make it all happen perfectly is in itself is a feat of planning and execution. Everyone can be sure that Maureen and I will be at next year’s SVR Charity Auction, and if Chefs Jimmy, Sheila, and Barbie donate another dinner next year, we will be bidding on it for sure. By the way, our winning bid was $110.00, and we shared this with Dave and Susan. Knowing Jim, Sheila, and Barbie, we anticipated a fantastic evening, but they actually outdid themselves from the moment they opened the door. But they always do. I said long time ago, I will be at any event this trio puts together. Everything they do is done exquistely and perfectly in the wonderful tradition of SVR. Maureen and I and Dave and Susan want to express our sincere thanks to Jim, Sheila and Barbie for a truly outstanding evening in every respect. This includes your friendship as well as your cooking skills. See you down the road.

Porsche Parade 2009 by Rik Larson

What is the Porsche Parade? Porsche Parade is the annual gathering of Porsche owners from around the United States and North America (such as Canada and Puerto Rico). The initial announcement was published in the November issue of PANORAMA. Additional information will appear in the January issue and there are a lot of details (schedule, hotels, event information) available at the website www.porscheparade2009.com. What happens at the Porsche Parade? The Parade will be held at the Keystone Resort in Colorado (about 75 miles west of Denver) during the last week of June. The six-day event includes four major competitive events (Concours, TSD rally, Autocross, and Tech Quiz). There are also a number of social and kid activities planned as well. And there are several driving tours. A golf tournament and 5K walk/run have been added to this year’s event. The schedule also includes tech seminars. And there are some meetings (but very few and they occur at the very beginning of the week). You can think of the Porsche Parade as a week long CRAB.

equal priority with the online registrants). No registration or postmarks prior to March 3rd will be accepted. The website has more details (costs, banquet tickets, event information). What about groups of Porsches caravanning to Colorado? It is expected that there will be several groups heading to Colorado. Most will take two days to travel (overnight in Utah). Some will plan to arrive on Sunday, June 28th so that they can unpack the car, clean the car, and acclimate to the elevation (it is 9,300 feet). Others will arrive on Monday, June 29th in time to complete their Parade check-in. What about the return trip? The Parade ends on Saturday evening, July 4th with a big dinner and fireworks. And there is also a drawing for a lucky Parade entrant (must be present to win) for a trip for two to the Porsche factory. That gives you Sunday and Monday (since many companies will observe the July 4th holiday on Monday) to return home at a leisurely pace.

What else do they have? There is a Hospitality Room that has many vendor booths and exhibits as well as the Internet Café. (You can either bring your laptop or use one of their computers.) There is also an Art Show, and you don’t have to be a Parade entrant in order to participate in the show. On Wednesday is the RC Cars event and then there is a Kids Bike event on Thursday. And Michelin will have their tire test again on Friday. Four dinners are scheduled, with the first one being the Welcome Party on Monday.

Any other questions? Just contact Rik Larson at 916.481.6084 or rik.larson@ gmail.com. We will try to assist or find someone that can answer your question.

How do I register? Registration will open Tuesday, March 3rd, with all registrations received by midnight, Thursday, March 5th receiving equal priority. They will accept 1,000 registrations (about the same as handled at the events in San Diego in 2007 and Charlotte in 2008). Most people will register online but the organizers will also accept snail-mail (with the postmark by March 5th receiving

Porsche sales decline Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart sold 1,493 vehicles in North American in November. Of these, 1,378 went to the United States and 115 went to Canada. The decline of 46 percent in comparison with the same period last year clearly shows that the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer cannot escape the general resistance to purchasing that exists in North America. For the Boxster series, the decline of 73 percent also has to do with the product life cycle; the new generation of the mid-engine sports cars will make its debut in the United States and Canada in March 2009. In November 2008, 161 vehicles of the Boxster series were sold, including a total of 76 units of the type Cayman and Cayman S. For the 911, there were sales of 551 units, which is 37 percent less than in the same month last year. Sales of the Cayenne fell 40 percent to 781 units. Due to the general economic crisis, Porsche has already undertaken measures to adjust production to reduced demand. Until the end of January 2009 no work will be done on eight workdays in the main factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. 11

First photos of four-door Panamera from Porsche AG

R

oughly nine months before the actual market launch, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has released the first official photos of the Panamera in its final look. In its design, profile and silhouette, Porsche’s unique four-seater stands out clearly as a new member of the Porsche family. Conceived and designed as a four-door grand touring sports car, the Panamera combines numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a generous and variable interior, and the supreme driving comfort of a Gran Turismo. Joining the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the sporty SUV Cayenne, the Panamera is Porsche’s fourth model series. The designers of the Panamera have succeeded in positioning this unique car as a brand-new and truly different model while nevertheless retaining the looks of a typical Porsche. Through its proportions alone, the Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment: measuring 1931 millimetres or 76.0 inches in width, the Panamera is wider, and measuring 1418 millimetres or 55.8 inches in height, lower than comparable four-door models. The unmistakable, sleek GT silhouette is created by the car’s overall length of 4970 millimetres or 195.7 inches and short, sporting overhangs front and rear. In its styling and details, the Panamera follows the design philosophy refined over decades on the 911 and successfully implemented also on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne. Through its design language alone, the Panamera will establish a new segment versus the competition. The symbiosis of sports car DNA derived from the looks of a coupé, the unique interpretation of the classical saloon body and the benefits of a variable space concept give the new Porsche its truly unmistakable appearance. As an example, the Panamera comes with highly individual, strongly contoured air intakes instead of a conventional radiator grille. Striking wheel arches and the long and sleek engine compartment lid create that typical 911 “landscape” at the front end of the car the Porsche customer has appreciated for no less than 45 years, with the distinctly contoured wings as flanks bordering on the flat front lid. The V-shaped seams along the engine compartment lid and the rear window tapering out like an arrow to the rear convey the features characteristic of a sports car to the new, highly individual Panamera class. The striking, muscular shoulders over the rear wheels, the dynamic sweep of the coupé-like roofline, and the visible tailpipes again bear out all the DNA so typical of a thoroughbred Porsche. The elegant roof arch extends stylishly over the generous interior, simply begging the beholder to get inside. Like all Porsche models, the Panamera is oriented in every respect to the needs and wishes of the driver. But now, thanks to the new concept of space and the sporting architecture of the interior, the car’s occupants are also able to experience this special “pilot feeling” on all four seats. All four occupants enjoy supreme ergonomic comfort on both the front seats and the two firmly contoured single seats at the rear. The luggage compartment easily takes up all the passengers’ luggage. The variable space concept with its folding rear seat 14

backrests enables the driver and passengers to adjust the luggage space individually to their personal requirements. And last but not least, the coupé tailgate in the sporting rear end combines superior suitability for daily use with stylish elegance. Porsche has developed superior and up-to-date power units for the Panamera again reflecting all the qualities typical of the brand – the V-engines within the engine compartment come with six and eight cylinders and range in power from 300 to 500 bhp. Some of the engines use turbocharger technology, Direct Fuel Injection making them both fuel-efficient and powerful all in one. The flow of power to the wheels goes either through a manual six-speed gearbox or the new seven-speed Double-Clutch Gearbox, the so-called Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK). In addition to sporting rear-wheel drive, the top version of the Panamera comes with even more sophisticated all-wheel drive, which is also available for the other versions as an option. As a further highlight, Porsche is preparing a particularly fuel-efficient version of the Panamera with hybrid drive. Further details on the engines, transmissions, performance, prices and equipment will be disclosed next spring. The Porsche Panamera will be built at Porsche’s Leipzig Plant, where a production hall measuring some 22,000 square metres or almost 237,000 square feet and a logistics centre are currently under construction. While the engines featured in the Panamera are built at Porsche’s Main Plant in Zuffenhausen, the painted bodyshells will be supplied by the Volkswagen Plant in Hanover. The Leipzig Plant will then assemble the Panamera for final delivery, with an annual sales target of some 20,000 units. Porsche is once again cooperating largely with German suppliers in the production of the Panamera, with some 70 per cent of the car’s overall value being created domestically. Hence, the Panamera is most definitely a car “Made in Germany.” The Panamera will be making its world debut in spring 2009 and the first models will be at dealers worldwide in late summer. the drifter

HAPPY NEW YEAR! By Tom Sisson, SVR Goodiestorekeeper

T

he Goodie Store has some buys to help you use up all that money you saved at the Christmas sales! Don’t miss out! Some of these items do require ordering, so figure that into your thinking. The best things going for this weather are the fleece vests ($35.00) or the denim shirts ($35.00) with various logos available. For lighter-weight, try the T-Shirts with PORSCHE embroidered across the front: ONLY $20.00 total (plus shipping of course). Many colors are obtainable. Also, heavyweight SWEATSHIRTS with Porsche script are available in red, black, white and Navy. Again, the logos aren’t limited to the Porsche script; we can order the Porsche crest, and various cars can be put on the garments. There are 911s, 356s, 928s, 914s and Boxsters. It may even be possible to match your car’s color. WOW!!! Some of these colors are so bright you will need sunglasses! BTW: Did you know that Fifteenth century Chinese judges might have invented sunglasses? They didn’t worry about being recognized, but, in the interests of being even-handed, they didn’t want people to follow their eye movements and reactions to trial testimony. So they wore smoked-tinted quartz spectacles to conceal them. Our modern use of sunglasses to keep out the glare, however, comes largely from 1930s airplane pilots who wore them to shield their eyes from the sun. Civilians quickly emulated the aviators. Some even adopted sunglasses for fashion as well as protection, hoping to make their social life take off. Another educational moment brought to you by THE GOODIE STORE! Call your Goodie Store people - Cookie Anderson 916.988.6534 or Tom Sisson at 209.296.5352. Samples may also be available at various events and meetings.

Index of Advertisers The last “last word” by Bud Behrens When I was appointed “temporary” editor of The Drifter in October 2006, I thought I would have to stay on the job for only a few months. Twenty seven months have passed, and now I can turn over this job to your new editor Jon “JR” Evinger whose first effort will be the February 2009 issue. I hope everyone will give him the same support and cooperation I have received during my tenure.
