I

t’s hard to believe that we are already in September. Kids will be back in school, and the rest of us will be at work. Those of the retirees or us who are are wondering what day it is even though they really don’t have to know what day it is. Anyway with the kids back in school, please be careful in your neighborhood and those of others because kids on the way to school have a tendency to be in the street. The tour to Mammoth was a success; there were ten cars and the weather was perfect - sunny and clear (yes, no smoke). Best of all, those that came along had a good time, which included two social gatherings where we could meet and talk about a variety of things, not always about cars. The last couple of days I was in San Diego on business and always enjoy reading the Southwest magazine when in Southern California. The most recent issue contained some tips which I would like to pass along here. Note that these are not mine and are from the magazine.

• Trying to fit a large rolling bag into the overhead bin in an airliner? Try putting it in with the handle towards the window and the wheels facing the aisle. Seems the bins are angled and are smaller at the window level. • Put your and members of your family rapid awards numbers in your cell phone contacts list. That way you have them when you need them.

This month is our annual charity auction and there is additional information about the event on page 6 of this issue. I would just like to say that this event gives us a chance to return something to our community while, at the same time, have fun doing it. Larry and Kirk will again entertain us with their excellent auctioneer skills required to “sell” the variety of items up for auction. Some of the items are a challenge to “sell off ” while others need very little help to get stimulate the bidding. Please bring your items and come out to support Make-a-Wish. Because this year’s board of directors will have a large turnover and a majority the positions are termed out, the club will need your help in filling the positions on the board so we can continue to offer high-quality events and keep the fun in the club. Please contact Jeff Kinder to offer your assistance. Our board meetings, which are held once each month, usually last a couple of hours, and are enjoyable. I wrote earlier this year that CRAB 35 is on the 2009 calendar and that it might be last CRAB hosted by our region. Since we are hosting CRAB next year and have the support of some of last year’s team, we still do need some help for some of the various parts of CRAB. Please contact me to offer you help to make CRAB 35 a success. If there is support from the membership in volunteering to chair the various events and offering to co-chair CRAB 35, we could consider having our Premier Porsche Weekender continue beyond 2009. Remember: it has to be fun or we should not be doing it.

Drifting Back – September 2008 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (September 1978) The September 8th dinner meeting at the Palomino Room on El Camino Avenue included two entrees: prime rib $8.95 or seafood combo $7.95 (prices include tax, tip, baked potato, salad, rolls, dessert, and beverage). Seventy-eight members attended including Bill and Lendine Nelson, Trische Robertson, Sheila McDade back from the hospital, Jack and June Samples, and two from Summer House in Woodland, recipients of SVR’s 1978 charity contribution. Rik and Lettie Larson and Stan Breyfogle co-chaired the September 23-24 Carrera de Sierra IV, SVR’s two-day T&D rally to Yosemite Park and back with an over-night stay and barbecue steak dinner under the stars at Camp Curry. The event finished Sunday in Stockton at the Waterloo Gun & Bocci Ball Club. This Carrera had a record turnout when 95 rally cars took the start, including two cars from Los Angeles, one from Portland, one from Seattle, and cars from all but one region of Zone 7 (39 were PCA entries). In addition, there were 13 SVR cars of workers: Baldarelli/Adams, Wilsons, Engels, Burkes, Neukoms, Willises, Samples, Weddles/Sally, Bates, McDades, Boswells, Larsons, and Breyfogle. Top SVR finishers included Jim and Joyce Karver, 2nd in Expert Unequipped Class; Fred Roloff and Gwen Lee, 3rd in Expert Unequipped Class; and Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger, 2nd in Novice Unequipped Class. Scoring was handled with two computers provided by John Clever and David Frick. These were the halcyon days of time and distance rallying in California. 20 Years Ago (September 1988) September 11th was a very windy day for the Grape Escape to Alexander Valley by Jim McDade and Kirk Bradford. Jim and Kirk took SVR members in 22 cars to five great wineries: Fieldstone, Piper Sonoma, William Wheeler, Mark West, and Iron Horse. Staff of each winery gave a complete and informative tour of their operation and provided sampling of their best product. The wind stopped when the group reached the Napa valley. Fieldstone Winery was the destination for lunch. They provided white linen tables cloths on the picnic tables and a special outside tasting. Top honors in Jim and Kirk’s Wine Tour Test went to Marie and

Marv Smith. Despite all expectations, Connie and Harvey Cain did not finish last. The day was complete with a traditional Italian dinner at the old Union Hotel in Occidental. Al Holbert was killed September 30 when his private Aerostar, destined for Doylestown, PA, crashed shortly after takeoff from Columbus, OH. Holbert was returning home after his twocar Miller Hi-Life Porsche 962 team completed Friday practice for the Columbus IMSA Camel GTP race. The team withdrew both cars after the tragic crash. In an ESPN interview, Derek Bell remembered Holbert for his, “finest win at the 1983 24 Hours of LeMans. Al had a car that was absolutely dying under his hands with smoke pouring out, but he nursed that car to the finish as it literally crumpled into a heap as he got the checkered flag.” 10 Years Ago (September 1998) Mary and Larry Clark hosted the September 6th Labor Day gimmick rally and barbecue pool party. With 35 people entered, the rally finished at the Clark home in Granite Bay with hamburgers and hotdogs provided by SVR. Rik Larson won the rally running solo. The SVR charity auction and picnic, September 13th, chaired by Alma Thompson and Sara Clements, was a success raising $2,275 for SVR’s charity, The Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. Mike and Sue Ambrozewicz lent their home, SVR provided hotdogs, bratwurst, sodas, beer, and the members turned out with a treasure-trove of auction items. The day began with a concours organized by Kent Brandon and won by Kelly Parks and her 928. Then there was lots of beer and food for potential bidders. A brief time was spent with a “silent auction” to which SVR auctioneers, Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson said in unison, “Whaaat?” Then to the real auction with terrific items from Paragary’s, Fabrication Specialties, Fossil Watch, Niello Porsche, Enotria Café, Dent Magic, ARD Hair Design, Trader Joe’s, Rocklin Harley Davidson, DeVons, and Landmark Tours. The ‘killer’ items were Marv Smith’s applewood boxes and Marie Smith’s delicious cookies. And, of course, the “last” Steve McQueen poster was once more available, as tradition would have it. Nineteen rally cars entered Carrera de Sierra XXI, September 26-27, to Downieville (overnight stay) and return with six checkpoints each day and Rik Larson as rallymaster. Two cars (Allen and Dolores Weddle, and Rich Swenson and Judy Hanna) ran the course as a tour. Workers included Bud and Mary Ann Behrens, Dave and Dolores Johnson, Phillip Marks, and Pat and Larry Wilson. Rally class winners included Helen Ashuckian, J. Toney, and Richard Wetzel.

SVR 2nd Annual Photo Rally & BBQ Saturday, September 13, 2008

B

y popular demand, it is time for the 2nd Annual Photo Rally, which is more like a scavenger hunt. Time is a minimal factor; however, in case of a tiebreaker, distance may become one. For those of you who participated last year, a new, different list from last year will be provided. But the same rules apply. Each rally team will be given the same list of items to photograph in any order, and with liberal interpretation of what each item means. The team vehicle and one team member must appear in each photo on the items on the list. NOTE:This event is limited to 20 teams, so sign up as soon as possible. It will be on a first-come, first-served basis! Schedule • Starting location to be determined 2:30 P.M. - Pick up rules and instructions • 3:00 P.M. - Shotgun start 6:00 P.M. - End at Matt and Ann Hamel’s backyard in East Sacramento for a BBQ and awards ceremony. Increased performance with better fuel efficiency

P

orsche has disclosed photos and details for the next generation 911 model series. Four new 911 models go on sale in September in North America – the 911 Carrera Coupe, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Carrera S Coupe, and 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. All offer a higher level of performance thanks to their all-new flat-six engines displacing 3.6 and 3.8 liters respectively. And for the first time in a Porsche sports car, engines utilize direct fuel injection (DFI) and can be coupled with the new optional 7-speed double-clutch gearbox Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), racing inspired technology and a Porsche first. The result of these new technologies allows Porsche to once again boost performance of the 911, yet improve fuel efficiency by up to 13 percent as measured in the European driving cycle. Maximum output of the 911 Carrera with its 3.6-liter engine is up by 20 horsepower to 345. The 911 Carrera S with its 3.8-liter engine is equally impressive, up by 30 horsepower to 385. With this extra power, the Carrera S now offers a top speed of 188 mph.

The new generation 911 is available for the first time with the new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox. The seven-speed gearbox combines the driving comfort of an automatic transmission with the gearshift capacity of a sequential gearbox used in racecars. Since Porsche’s double-clutch also boasts an automatic gearshift function, it replaces the former Porsche Tiptronic S automatic transmission on both the Carrera and Carrera S. PDK improves acceleration while reducing fuel consumption over the previous generation of Tiptronic S equipped 911s through optimized and adaptive gearshifts. Porsche developed this gearshift principle for racing no less than 25 years ago. It features two parallel clutches to eliminate any interruption in power delivery and eliminates even the slightest break between gears. Porsche factory drivers benefiting from this technology were able to accelerate faster than their competitors and keep both hands on the wheel while shifting gears, thus avoiding even the slightest distraction. This pioneering achievement from Porsche’s racing efforts now gives the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S even better performance.

The Carrera equipped with PDK covers 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and the Carrera S reaches the same speed in 4.3 which is 0.2 seconds faster than with a manual six-speed gearbox. The customer in search of optimum driving dynamics even has the option to combine PDK with Porsche’s optional Sport Chrono Plus including Launch Control. The result is high-speed acceleration free of wheel spin from a standstill and a racing shift pattern to further boost performance. The Carrera equipped with the Sport Chrono Plus accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds while the Carrera S sprints to 60 mph in an outstanding 4.1. Exterior enhancements of the new 911 stand out clearly through innovations in design and technology. The refined front bumper has larger air intakes, which signal an increase in power and the newly designed dual-arm exterior mirrors give a larger field of vision to the rear of the car. LED daytime driving lights and bi-xenon headlights will be standard on all new models, as well as LED tail and brake lights. This gives the 911 an even more distinctive style and a truly unique look from the front and rear. As a further option, Porsche now also offers Dynamic Cornering Lights on all models. In Porsche fashion, these new refinements do not change the drag coefficient of the 911 as it stays at a remarkable 0.29. The latest Porsche Communication Management system, PCM 3.0, which includes a new touchscreen feature, will be standard on all new 911s. Along with this upgraded system, options such as a hard disk drive navigation system, XM radio with XM NavTraffic capability, Bluetooth® connectivity, iPOD® port, USB port, and aux jack will be available. 2009 911 Canadian pricing starts at $94,800 for the Carrera Coupe, $107,600 for the Carrera Cabriolet and the Carrera S Coupe, and the Carrera S Cabriolet is $120,400. The Canadian price increase for the 2009 911 models is 1.2 percent below the U.S. increase in response to exchange rate changes over recent months. *Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Direct fuel injection lowers fuel consumption and increases performance

ollowing in the footsteps of the street Porsche Cayenne and 911, the sports prototype Porsche RS Spyder now profits from direct fuel injection technology (DFI). The new engine, with which Porsche underlines its role as technology leader in energy efficiency, celebrated its race premiere with an LMP2 victory in the American Le Mans Series as Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) took the class win at Mid-Ohio earlier this month.

The power output of the successful 2006 and 2007 championship winning Porsche, which has so far claimed victory from four of the six races run in this year’s ALMS, increased with the new engine from 476 to 503 hp (370 kW) at 10,000 revs per minute. Maximum torque rose from 370 Nm (273 ft. lbs.) at 7,500 revs to 385 Nm (284 ft. lbs.) at 8,500 revs. The most compelling feature of the DFI version of the successful Porsche 3.4-litre V8 motor is its improved energy efficiency – an important element in endurance racing. Despite an improved power output, fuel consumption was significantly reduced. “After reaching a very high level with the previous engine we raced, we had to put considerable efforts into the development of the direct fuel injection unit in order to significantly improve performance and efficiency,” says Thomas Laudenbach, Head of Motorsport Development/PowerTrain. “In order to achieve revs of up to 11,000 with DFI technology it meant stepping into totally new territory.” During the design and development of the engine, synergies of product areas and motorsport departments were utilized to a large extent.

“Right from the beginning there was a lively exchange,” reminisces Thomas Laudenbach. “We had already recognized the advantages of this technology at the start of the RS Spyder project andadapted them to the very special requirements of motorsport, always in close consultation withour colleagues in the standard development department. The methods and insights we obtained from our co-operation are of considerable value for future development projects involving DFI technology.” Normally an increased engine output is in conjunction with a rise in fuel consumption. This is not the case here. “Thanks to the substantial increase of energy efficiency there’s no rise in the absolute fuel consumption despite the significant hike in performance. On the contrary – we’re even a bit lower,” said Laudenbach. Another advantage of the new DFI engine: At partial load – for example during the many caution phases of long distance races - the engine can be run extremely lean. This further reduces fuel consumption and was not possible with the intake manifo ld fuel injection which was raced previously. Moreover, new options open up for the controlling of highly dynamic processes like, for example, gear shifting at full throttle. Such options were not fully utilized before. After the successful premiere in Mid-Ohio, the new DFI motor will power the two Penske Racing RS Spyder cars for the next round next week at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. With this, Porsche intends to strengthen its top position in the American Le Mans Series. “Competition in the LMP2 class is at an extremely high level and it gets tougher race by race,” says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Motorsport at Porsche. “Therefore now is exactly the right time to race the new engine.”

Help keep your Porsche cool in the heat by Lisa Tomas, SVR Technical Chair

A

few drops of coolant on the garage floor under the nose of the Turbo had me searching the Internet for the cause, only to find it is a fairly common occurrence for a rock to hit the radiator and punch a hole in it. The Turbo has three radiators, while the 996s have two. These radiators are located behind the air vents in the front spoiler of the cars. I had read in the various on-line forums that it’s a good idea to keep the openings in the front spoiler clear, so I had paid careful attention to them by vacuuming, and even blowing in there with a leaf blower on a regular basis. When I looked through the openings I couldn’t see much debris in them, so after I removed the spoiler to replace the bad radiator, I was shocked at the amount of debris that was stuck stuck to the radiators.

Removing the spoiler The Front wheels must be removed. Make sure the front of the car is secure and safely supported on jack stands. Remove the wheels and the front parts of the plastic inner wheel-well housings. • 1. Open the hood. There are four hexagon cap nuts (two on the 996), turn these 45 degrees and remove the cover. Undo the four sheet-metal screws beneath the cover.

• 2. Remove the turn signal lights by pulling out the center of the plastic connector inside the wheel well. Next, pull the light towards you; it slides out and to the rear of the car. Disconnect the electrical connection. • 3. Undo the front spoiler screws where the turn signal lights were. • 4. Remove the temperature sensor from the inlet grill. If what you see in the photos aren’t enough to encourage you to take the time to remove the front spoiler and clean this area, let me tell you this at least: the Turbo doesn’t heat up nearly as rapidly now that it can breath again. The small radiator-looking thing is for the air conditioning. The radiator that actually regulates the car’s engine coolant is behind, and the only exposure it has to the air was completely encrusted with dirt.

• 5. Undo the ten screws under the car. Carefully remove spoiler and clean those radiators. • 6. Reinstall the spoiler in the reverse order.

resident Mike Willis called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. Attending: Mike Willis, Kim Nelson, Cookie Anderson, Jerry Cupler, Rik Larson, Betty Silva, and John Murphy. The July minutes were reviewed and accepted. New Business

• Financial Report (Betty Silva): Betty reported that we have money in the bank. A motion was made to accept the budget as received. CRAB 34 was financially successful for SVR this year. Thank you, Mark Judish. • Goodie Store (Tom Sisson): Report received and approved.

• Monthly Breakfast: Rik discussed SVR’s monthly breakfast meeting in an effort to see if the board had any objectives for the monthly gathering. Attendance has been down, but the board believes this is due to people being out of town on vacation. We agreed to continue the breakfast meetings through the end of the year and bring it up at the planning meeting to see of we can get some additional input from the membership. Mike also noted that he wants all activities listed in the Sacramento Bee.

• Membership Director (Rik Larson): SVR has 603 primary members with 495 affiliate members for a total of 1098. The club also has ten dual members. We had seven new members join in July and one transfer in from Redwood Region. The next New Member Tour will be held on October 11th.

• Lifetime Memberships: Rik discussed the board’s position on SVR’s Lifetime Members. At this point SVR has only Allen and Dolores Weddle as Lifetime Members. A motion was made to make Marv and Marie Smith Lifetime SVR Members. The motion was seconded and approved by the board. Rik and Kim agreed to work on a policy statement for the board’s review.

• Webmaster (John Murphy): Sometime in August, web hits will top 1 million – about on par with last year. Most-frequently accessed files were the August and July Drifters, the Mammoth and Western Railroad Museum tours, and the June 29th Concours at Niello Porsche. The most popular pages were photos of the Concours at Niello Porsche, Current Events Summary and Classified Ads. We had visitors from 57 countries with Oman securing “dead last but finished” on the list with three visitors.

First Aid, AED, CPR/Adult, Child and Infant Classes On Saturday or Sunday October 18th or 19th, SVR will offer two classes, six hours each, of First Aid, AED and CPR for those interested in being certified. The fee is $65.00 for a one-year certification or $75.00 for a two-year certification by the American Health and Safety Institute. The sessions will include books, a first aid teaching package, an AED machine, a CPR manikin and lunch. There is additional hour for Infant CPR. Preregistration and prepayment are required to attend. Unless a minimum of fifteen persons per class preregisters, the classes will not be offered. Instructors will be Captain Jay Skidmore of the Sacramento Metro Fire Department and Diane Spina of the American Red Cross. An itch is still largely that which you scratch, one of life’s great secrets. It’s a stimulus affecting the nerve endings between the dermis and epidermis; scientists liken it to a form of pain. It’s usually caused by histamine released in the epidermis. Scratching stops it, either by interfering with the nerve impulses or by temporarily damaging the nerves themselves. If you want to become famous, solve the mystery of the itch. But you won’t get much help from research so far. You’ll just have to start from scratch. Now, aren’t you glad you asked? You didn’t ask? his month I’m giving the first few inches of the column to Jeff Kinder, who has something important to say about the future of our club.

It’s almost SVR election time All members of the SVR board of directors will be up for reelection this year and there will be regular election for the 2009 calendar board this fall. Several members of the current board have reached the limit of their terms and cannot be re-elected into their current positions. The President, Treasurer, Membership Director, and Social Director will have reached the limit of their terms at the end of this year. All of the board positions, not just those being term limited this year, are open for candidates. Those positions include President, Vice President, Competition & Safety Director, Membership Director, Secretary, Social Director, and Treasurer. Serving on the board would be an excellent way to give something back to SVR and, at the same time, become a bigger part of the club. Any of the board positions may have more than one person running. In addition to the official title, instantly elevated status, and voting rights at board meetings, you get a spiffy white name badge which gives you instant recognition as an SVR board member. What better way to influence the direction of your club than to serve it?

If you are in charge or hosting an event, please don’t be shy about submitting a review article and/or photos of your event to the editor. Articles and photos should be submitted no later than the first of the month prior to the month of publication. (For example, if you want the article to appear in the November issue, it should be submitted by October 1.) Please do not embed photos or graphics in your article; send them separately. You do not need to resize, crop, or enhance your photos; the editor likes to play with Photoshop. Identify the persons and places in the photos; captions are welcome. If someone other than yourself made the photos, be sure to mention the photographer’s name(s). Although you may write the article yourself, it’s better to ask one of the participants in your event to write it. If you send the article as an attachment to an e-mail message, please use one of the standard word processing programs, such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.
