Chilli’s chatter by Mike Willis

I

was going to write this at our timeshare in Princeville Kauai, but for some reason never got it done. Thank you, Bud, for the extra time this month to put some things down.

The photo along with this bit of chatter was sent to me by Phil Lawerence and has let the cat out of the bag as to what I plan to do with myself after my term as SVR president expires in December. Plus, this can also work out for me as a little part-time retirement job. Now of course, some would say running a restaurant would really not be part-time occupation by any stretch of the truth. So, guess I should do some volunteer work or continue working part-time. Our late summer and fall calendar looks like we can be busy with our Porsche friends. We have scheduled enough dinners, breakfasts, tours, autocrosses, Drivers Education, and even a few cultural events along the way that could fill up anyone’s calendar. Keep aneye on our calendar in the Drifter and on our web page for those events that you would like to be a part of. And please let our event chairs know that you would like to attend or, even better, offer to help out. Our annual charity auction will be held at Greg and Cyndee Peart’s home in Elk Grove this year. Susan Fleming is our chair and will have information available in the Drifter and on the SVR home page. For this year’s charity she has chosen the Make-a-Wish Foundation. She asks support from all of our by their donating auction items and by bidding on other items - or even bidding on your own donated items. We have been very lucky in the past years to have the wonderful wood works from Marv Smith. I do not think that this year we will have them because Marv might not be able to make them. So, please put on your thinking cap about acquiring some items that would be suitable replacements for his work. This might seem a little early in the year, but we need to start thinking about the nominations for SVR board positions in 2009. Some of us are termed out, and the club will need to have candidates to run for some of the positions on next year’s board. Please contact Jeff Kinder and volunteer to help on the nominating committee or to offer yourself as a candidate for one of the positions on the board. It is a little work and fun, and at the same time helps make our region successful and keep our events and direction going along for the benefit of all our members. It is fun and we are doing it.

Third Annual San Francisco Art Tour August 31, 2008 We will be touring to San Francisco, and to the SFMOMA in particular, for a show of Frida Kahlo’s paintings. (I believe there are about fifty of them.) It’s interesting to note that her husband, Diego Rivera, claimed that she was a better artist than he. Admission fee: for adults - $20.50, for seniors - $16.00 Tickets are sold on a timed basis, as was for the Monet exhibit two years ago. This insures that the museum will not be overcrowded at any time. It also means that I will need more than the normal lead-time to be sure that we get the tickets we want. So I’m setting a deadline of August 18th The museum has a fine café, and you may eat inside or outside. It’s an expensive gourmet restaurant, but it’s worth it. I’m planning to leave at 10:00 A.M. from the Tower Theatre parking lot, across Broadway from Starbucks. The Tower Theatre is located at the corner of Broadway and Land Park Drive (16th St). We will take a leisurely drive to the museum in time for lunch and, I hope, tickets for 12:30 or 1:00 P.M. I hope a lot of you will join us on this tour. It is San Francisco, you know! Drifting Back – August 2008 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (August 1978) The August 6th SVR practice autocross, chaired by Rich Burke at Cal Expo, became known as “The Mystery Autocross” because the path to participation had as many traps as the best Phillip Marks rally. Event publicity had the wrong date, it erroneously appeared to be an “other-car” autocross event, and the event site was omitted. Not a problem - Rich had a great turnout of “other cars,” requiring a quick format change with car-color as a means of determining car class for a tune-and-test session in preparation for the first Other Car Autocross in November. Car thrashers having a great time including Michael Peters, Larry and Pat Wilson, Mike and Michelle Willis, Geary and Linda Lyons, Paul Baldarelli, and Rich and Gail Burke, plus many others. The August 10 th Picnic and Charity Auction at Bess Feil’s home in Fair Oaks, with Betty Fielding in charge, raised $1,180.03 for charity. Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson were the auctioneers. Ted Strutz outbid Ted Colbert for a nude painting. When combined with the $250.00 proceeds from Betty Fielding’s stained glass Porsche crest, a total of $1,430.03 was contributed to Summer House, Inc., in Woodland, which provided services for people with developmental special needs. THE DRIFTER didn’t print the results of the annual volleyball tournament between the 356ers and the 911/914/924/928 bunch, but the 356 team probably won - they always did. Kirk Bradford, as chair of the August 27 Gold Rush Tour, gave Rich Burke stiff competition for the monthly Dummkopf Award. He got his own phone number wrong in the event’s DRIFTER publicity, and then he showed up for the tour without insurance release forms (Marv Smith had some and bailed him out). Finally, in Amador City, Kirk led the tour up a street named, “Pig Turd Alley.” Tsk, tsk - how tacky. 20 Years Ago (August 1988) The SVR Charity Auction and Concours d’Elegance, August 14th, with Herb and Jan Hoover, and Bob and Beth Jacobson as co-chairs, started early as Tom and Tambra Kroetz registered concours arrivals at Bob and Beth Jacobson’s home. A big turnout of

356s included Robert and Lauri Raucher all the way from Chico. Judges were Al Weidman of Oroville, Russ Currul of Palm Desert, and Mel Ewing of Lincoln. Larry Wilson won the 356 class with his 1961 356B coupe. Ken Mitchell’s 944 took the water-cooled 900-series class, and Marcella Mitchell’s 914 won the air-cooled 900-series class and took Best of Show! Auctioneers Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson went to work at 1:00 P.M. Dolores Weddle’s sugar pickles and Marie Smith’s sweets brought top-dollar. Nancy and Fred Myeron’s veggies and fruits also did well. The Hoovers donated use of their “Ugly Truck” for the weekend, and after serious bidding, it was won by Bob Dennison and Elizabeth Carr. Local businesses donating auction items included Niello Porsche, Lasher Porsche, Autosport Technology, OK Tires, Tidy Car, Walt Stickel Body and Paint, Iron Horse Body and Paint, Felix Hair Styles, Weidman Brothers, and Fabrication Specialties Body and Paint. The event raised $1,500 for Amador County Special Olympics. Beth Jacobson wrote THE DRIFTER coverage. The Graeagle Tour, August 20th and 21st, chaired by Randy and Marci Vidmar and Ken and Marcella Mitchell, took SVR members in fifteen cars to a little ex-lumber town in the Sierras about fifty miles north of Truckee. Midway, the tour had a delay after vaporlock afflicted the 914 of Jay and Carla Cross and the 911 of Toni and Jarol Moore. During the wait, Ron Boeck took a dip in the Feather River to recover from his vaporlock. Sheila and Jim McDade held four queens to win the tour-game of poker. After arrival at the motel in Graeagle, all headed directly to the pool and refreshments. Sheila McDade and Phil Keith each won their class after several games with unprintable names. Dinner was a western-style barbecue served outside under the trees and Continued

stars. On Sunday, after a round of golf or visiting “quaint” shops, the group headed home. Dolores and Allen Weddle wrote THE DRIFTER piece about the tour. 10 Years Ago (August 1998) Helen Ashuckian chaired the August 2nd “SVR Tour, Brunch & Sail” event and took thirty-two SVR members to Sausalito and brunch at the Presidio Yacht Club, and then with the group splitting, one-half with Captain Joe, the other half with Skipper Annettee, for an adventurous sail under the Golden Gate and around the Bay. Bob Peake took photos for THE DRIFTER, one of which showed Allen and Dolores Weddle following Helen to one of the sailboats (a life-jacket definitely was a must). Many SVR members couldn’t resist the August 14th-15th Monterey Historic Autommobile Races with Porsche as the featured marque. The August 22nd dinner meeting was located at Mission Rogelio in Gold River with twenty-nine members having dinner on the patio. But, the BIG event in August was the Highway Pickup Party scheduled August 23rd by chairman, Herb Hoover. A good turnout appeared at Shari’s Restaurant for breakfast before hitting SVR’s section of Interstate 5 for cleanup and treasure hunting. The crew included Rita Chamberlain, Mary and Larry Clark, Jan and Herb Hoover, Rik Larson, Dwight Mitchell, Arnold Ramirez, and Gerry Wade. Gerry found a one-mile length of plastic cord, Jan hit the jackpot with a watch and pair of pliers, Larry found a wrench (not metric), and Rita found a decoy duck. Wow!

Western Pacific Railroad Museum and Graeagle Driving Tour Saturday, August 23 The Western Pacific aka Portola Railroad Museum (www.wplives.org) features over 35 locomotives and 100+ gondolas, rotary plows, tampers, hoppers, reefers (not the paperwrapped variety), passenger cars, box cars, flat cars, side dumps and cabooses…if it’s on rails, you’ll see it somewhere on this 37-acre site. This is a museum for the curious, more akin to a 1940s rail car maintenance facility than a museum displaying perfectly renovated artifacts. Both types are enjoyable, but there’s a different appeal to a “bone yard” of rail cars ranging from wheel-less hulks to (almost) fully restored locomotives. You’re encouraged to explore, to climb into, to open doors, to try out a dusty engineer’s seat. Descending from one car, you’ll spot another, wonder “What the heck is that?”, then take off for another discovery. It’s a museum in evolution. The grounds contain stacks of steel rails, rows of huge trucks (wheel and suspension assemblies) and flat cars covered with parts, potentially useful in future restorations. Visitors can pilot a locomotive for $175/hour. We can all get our hands on the throttle by time sharing, reducing individual costs to $15 or so. Or, ride in a “caboose train” over a 10 minute loop for $5, and for an additional $5, ride in the locomotive. But wait, there’s more…a great drive. Making quick work of flatlands and foothills, we’ll zip up I-80 to Colfax and Nevada City, where the fun starts. Highway 49, climbing the twisting, along the deep gorge of the Yuba River through Downieville and Sierra City, is a Porsche pilot’s delight. Designated the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway, it is also one of most beautiful mountain roads in California. The historic Kentucky Mine provides a shady and interesting lunch spot, with an optional stamp mill and gold mine tour. We’ll pause on Gold Lake Road for a photo op of the magnificent 8,600 foot Sierra Buttes, and arrive at the museum a few minutes later. The return to Sac is simpler and faster, mostly down I-80. Some will no doubt enjoy libations in Truckee before heading home. Lunch. Bring a lunch, drinks and snacks for munching enroute. Meet at the Safeway Store (4805 Granite Dr., Rocklin) on the Northeast corner of I-80 and Rocklin Rd. Registration 8:00. Driver’s meeting 8:20. Depart 8:30 sharp. Fee. $15 per car, a portion of which covers admission to both museums. Please make checks payable to SVR-PCA. Preparation Suggestions. Recommend two-way radios set to Channel 9. Loaners may be available. Arrive with a full tank of gas. Camera recommended. Weather is variable, but generally about 85o in Portola in August. Total mileage is roughly 265---a full day, indeed.

Who is Roy?

The second annual BS (Barbie & Sheila) wine tour by Randy Vidmar, photos by Doug Klein

I

t is June 22nd at 7:15 A.M. It is starting out to be a truly beautiful day, and, as usual, I am very excited about going on this tour. (We went on the First Annual BS Tour last year and had a great time.) In fact, I’m so excited that again, I fouled up; just ask my wife. I got her out of bed at 5:30 A.M. so we would be on time for the tour! However, I misread the first instruction, thinking the tour would leave at 8 A.M. It said arrive at 8:00 AM. Well, after calling Sheila (to make sure I was in the right place), you should have seen the look on Maureen’s face when I had to tell her we were a half hour early for the tour. (Even coffee didn’t help.) At least we didn’t arrive late. Ah, the Porsches were beautiful, as always and included models ranging from Sheila’s beautiful 1962 356 Cabriolet, Bill and Kathy Keegan’s rare ’87 930 SE to the latest Cayenne (actually two of them). There were seventeen cars on the tour. For sure, those of you who did not attend missed a good one. (I remember when SVR tours drew often upwards of forty cars.) Sheila, Barbie, and Jim McDade are absolute experts in setting up a tour in the truest Porsche SVR form. Sheila and Barbie wore unique hats and flip-flops that were not to be missed. (Sheila did have a flip-flop grape blow out, though.) What are a few losses in a big operation? I don’t know how they managed to balance those wine glasses on their hats, but as usual this fantastic duo managed it with class. These two ladies set the tone for the rest of the day, which turned out to be an exquisite wine tour in the finest tradition of SVR. The drivers meeting covered every detail, and Jim said that “as usual, he would bring up the rear” in his white Turbo. I must say that Sheila set a “lively” pace in her 356; that little car sure can go, but more about that later. We did leave right on time. (Although one of the drivers gave her car to her daughter to go get a Starbucks, and oops, she also left her cell phone in the car. After the group left, waited for her car to show up. All great pastimes have their little glitches. Recovery is everything. After arriving in the Sonoma Valley via the freeway and Route 12 we arrived at Benziger Family Winery. Sheila had called ahead to her brother Jerry (or is it Roy) with our arrival time. (That’s another story.) We were greeted with quite a treat, a first for Maureen and me. The winery is situated in a valley with the

vineyards surrounding the house. It comprises eighty-five acres of lush vineyards and local fauna, all of which is grown naturally using biodynamic winegrowing techniques. There are no fertilizers used on the property. Benziger is the first winery to be certified to do this. Our treat was that we had our lunch on a beautiful shaded deck overlooking the property. But the best was yet to come. Barbie and Sheila set up a tour of the property that lasted about forty-five minutes. Our tour guide, Anthony (a Sonoma State winemaking major) was absolutely great. We found out how these wines are made using only nature. Believe me, the vines were incredibly lush as well as were all of the vegetation including the insectary. (That is where insects mate and do what insects do best - protect the environment.) After the tour, we ended up in the caves on the property for a wine tasting. Benziger wines are very full tasting, good, and unique which leaves one understanding how well their process works. A couple of bottles and a wine club card ended up in the Turbo. Barbie and Sheila found a really unique winery, but that’s how these two ladies do things: they seek out the best. What a treat to be on this tour. All we had to do was show up, and this was only the first stop. As we were leaving Benziger (remember the “more about that later?), we all witnessed about ten valiant guys pushing the little red 356 uphill to get it started, but having no luck. After about eighteen guys sticking their heads everywhere in the car, it was discovered that our tour leader and co-pilot left the lights on. Oh, boy! There was also another guy who left his lights on, too, but he also forgot the cheese for lunch and went back only to find his lights on. (That’s another story: no names, hee-hee.) Anyway, Jim jumped in and said he would lead the tour to the next winery while AAA was called for the 356. Jim took us over Trinity Road. Jim sure knows what Porsche pilots like! This road was fantastic with only Porsches on it - a Porsche driver’s paradise. Babbette, a new member, did just fine on some very challenging roads in her beautiful blue Boxster. Barbie and Sheila prepared absolutely excellent route directions. (If you got lost, you were not off the planet.) continued

The SVR Zone 7 concours by Kent Brandon photos by Bud Behrens and Doug Klein

We arrived at Rombauer Winery for a private tour of their caves. Our tour guide, John, gave up his day off to escort us. This is a real tribute to Sheila, Barbie and Jim. After we arrived deep in the cave, John gave us a brief explanation of Rombauer’s philosophy and techniques used in the making their outstanding wines. I got a chance to talk to John for a while and found out he was pouring a $60.00 bottle of Cabernet for us. You don’t see that everyday. Rombauer also had several cheeses, olives, bread, grapes and apricots for all of us. What a wonderful experience. I didn’t ask how Sheila and Barbie worked this one out, but everyone sure enjoyed it. Several more bottles ended up in the black Turbo. Our final stop was at Rutherford Hill Winery. A little detail must be noted: we had private parking at each winery, no door dings here. Rutherford Hill had prepared several private tables in their picnic area, including wine glasses and tablecloths. Sheila and Barbie were also waiting for us; AAA hs delivered her a new battery from Santa Rosa. (One does not find 6-volt 356 batteries any ole place.) According to Sheila, they had an unobstructed drive across Trinity Road. We were all glad they were back, and as was appropriate, a big party ensued. The tour was not over yet; we then drove to dinner at Romono’s Italian Restaurant, where we were seated in a private room. Romono’s restaurant presented us with five entrées and prompt service. This meal went perfectly with the day’s events. I love these BS tours, because our tour leaders introduce me to truly outstanding wines. It’s simple - this tour made life a little better. It was clear that everyone enjoyed the day’s events just by the comments I heard. I also had a chance to enjoy Sheila’s brother Jerry, or is it Roy? (Really neat guy.) Sheila, Barbie and Jim outdid themselves. I didn’t think that could happen after the standard set by last year’s tour, but it did. It was well planned with every possible detail accounted for, and the timing of everything was perfect. The drive, the roads, the winery selection, the restaurant selection were the model of what SVR touring is all about. When I think back, I recall that SVR used to have such tours once a month.) Having Sheila, Barbie and Jim as members of our Region is really quite a gift. They are always willing to make it happen. Their dedication, their passion for Porsches, their liveliness and friendship are truly remarkable. We were all rewarded by their efforts. Thank you B & B & J for a beautiful, special, and memorable day. Well done.

T

his year’s concours was held at Niello Porsche in Rocklin. As always, the folks at Niello went all out in supporting our event. All of the Porsche inventory was moved to an offsite location so that we could use the entire lot and service are for the event. Water, the use of a barbeque, door prizes and a generous sponsorship to help pay for the beautiful awards, were all provided by Niello. The total car count for entrants, and those just bringing their car out to display, neared seventy. There were thirty-six entrants in the Zone 7 Concours Series competition. First place winners this year were: Tom Giustina’s (SVR)’64 356C, Joe Schumacher’s (SVR) ’67 911S, Jim MacMahen’s (SVR) ’80 911SC, Roger Walker’s (SVR) ’96 993, Cindy Wyett’s (SNR) ’02 911, Andy Lundback’s (SVR) ’87 951, Tim Wilson’s (SVR) ’61 356B, Larry Wilson’s (SVR) ’55 Speedster, Jim Louchs’ (DR) ’72 9111T, Ed Gervasoni’s (GGR) ’89 930, Dan Rowland’s (SVR) ’97 993, Tom Sisson’s (SVR) ’06 997 Cabriolet, Paul Sayegh’s (SVR) ’72 914,Paul Czopek’s (YR) ’92 968, Larry Moeller’s (GGR) ’70 914, Jerry Kilany’s (SVR) ’65 356SC, Stephen Childs’ (SVR) ’73 911 Carrera RS, Stewart Thomas’ (YR) ’98 911 Speedster, Mike Willis’ (SVR) ’73 914, Bill Disser’s (GGR) ’58 356A, Mark Gersh’s ’86 911 Targa, and Jeff Kinder’s ’96 993 Cabriolet. Replacing hood struts

by Lisa Thomas, SVR Technical Chair

OK

, I was going out to the garage to begin lowering the 911SC, and to write an article on that process. The car was sitting there with its cover on, so I removed it, lifted the hood to put the cover in the trunk, and I do the usual thing - rest the trunk lid on my head to prop it, since the hood struts have not worked since I have owned the car. It occurred to me that I have three Porsches that need to have both the front and rear hood struts replaced. So, this is how you replace those struts.

obstructing parts worked for getting to the firewall end, and reaching above the parts allowed access to the deck lid end. As with the right side, the body is attached to the deck lid and the piston is attached to the firewall. Front Compartment Struts

Engine Compartment Struts These seem to wear out faster sooner than the front compartment struts, possibly due to the fact that when the engine lid is closed, the springs are compressed. Even when it’s open, the weight of the spoiler and motor that drives it, combined with the engine heat, are contributing factors to earlier failure. But these struts are actually easier to replace than the fronts. First, a word of caution: the convertible (cabriolet) uses shorter struts than the other models, so be sure you get the right parts (call Ron Kain at IPB). My cabriolet is eighteen years old, and I assume the struts are original.

Right Rear Strut The right rear strut is the easiest to replace, so do it first. Remove the air cleaner cover and the air cleaner element (on the 993, and 964). Prop the hood open with something (a broom handle). Remove the clip and pin from the back (away from the firewall) end of the gas spring, and then remove the clip and pin holding the other end (the end near the firewall). Be very careful not to drop any parts; if you do, you will never see them again. Install the new gas spring by doing the opposite: e.g., install the firewall end of the gas spring by pushing the pin through the spring and placing the clip back in place (being careful not to drop anything). Then, attach the end that connects to the deck lid. Note that the case of the spring is attached to the lid, and the piston rod is attached to the firewall. Left Rear Strut The left rear is the same procedure as the for the right rear, except that there is nothing you can move out of the way (in the 993), so you just have to reach into the engine compartment and do it. The plastic fan housing can be removed on the 964, and the SC is an easy access. I found that reaching below the various 12

This is an SC, which has larger front struts. Access to the lower end of either spring looks impossible, since all the wiring and the fuse box is in the way. The tool I used was a grabber, a long, flexible tube that has little hooks that come out when you depress the handle. These are great and definitely must-haves when parts are dropped into engine abyss. (Unfortunately with respect to the rears, any dropped parts are just plain gone.) These flexible things come with lights and magnets on the ends, too, which can also be helpful. Now that you have located the special tools, you also need a fairly long narrow flathead screwdriver. The lower end of each gas spring rides on a ball joint (on the 993). It is held onto the ball joint by a retaining clip that is released by sliding the 5mm screwdriver under it. The SC, and 964 have the same type of clips as used in the rear, just locating them is difficult, and retrieving them when lucky enough to spring them free is the issue. I strongly suggest you practice three or four times with your new spring on the 993. You will not be able to get the ball socket over the little ball if you don’t prepare the clip so it is open. I do this by sliding the clip ever so slightly forward – e.g. away from the body of the gas spring. (See the picture above.) The clip in the picture is slid too far, but this is so you can see what you are supposed to do. Place your 5 mm screw driver under the clip and lift up on the handle so that you leverage the clip forward up onto ledge that forms the front of the ball socket – this will hold the clip open enough, and when you place the ball socket over the ball, it will snap back in place. If not, you can use a bent wire coat hanger to pull it up (toward the gas spring body) to make it snap into place. Prepare the clips on both gas springs if you are changing both sides. Left Front Strut The left side is the easiest. On the 993, remove the plastic cover that is over the fresh air blowers. To do this, lift the rubber seal the drifter

straight up and off of the sheet metal, and then pull the whole assembly (gently) forward. Put it safely out of the way. Next, remove the small metal clip on top of the cover of the pollen filter. Move the wires that are under the clip out of the way. Unscrew the retaining nut on the pollen filter cover, unclasp the retaining clip on the far left side, and remove the cover. A really long screwdriver might work instead. Push the pin that holds the strut to the hood toward the inside of the car, and remove the clip. Then remove the pin. (Moving the hood up and down helps.) Take your flexible flashlight and illuminate the ball joint; it is (of course) on the bottom end of the strut. Release the clip on the ball socket (as you practiced). Holding both the screwdriver and the old strut, apply force towards the centerline of the car and the ball socket will pop free. Remove the old strut. To install the new strut, first check that the clip is still in the open position. Push the ball socket over the ball joint and verify that the clip snapped into the groove. If it didn’t, use a bent piece of wire to coax it upward. If it is in its groove you will not be able to pull the ball socket off of the ball joint. Attach the upper end of the hood strut (raise the hood so you can get the top of the strut into its slot, and then lower the hood until the holes for the pin line up). After the strut is properly connected, replace the pollen filter cover, being careful to line up the various groves. When you get it properly aligned, it will slide smoothly into place. Place the wires back where they came from and replace the metal clip that holds them in place.

Hottest Cayenne ever from Porsche Cars North America

T

he new 2009 Cayenne Turbo S is Porsche’s response to the enormous demand, especially in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Asia, for premium brand vehicles with exclusive heritage and performance. With a 4.8-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 550 hp, this latest Porsche SUV is the most powerful Cayenne ever produced. Remarkably, even with a 10% horsepower increase over the Cayenne Turbo, the new Cayenne Turbo S shares the identical mileage figures (based on European Operating Cycle).

Right Front Strut The right side strut is replaced using the same procedure, with the following additional steps (this is for the 993): 1. There is a wiring harness that goes over the top of the pollen filter cover. There is a plug on the side of the pollen filter cover. Unplug the harness at this plug. Slide the part of the harness that was attached to the cover up and towards the center of the car to release it from the cover. 2. There is a plastic sleeve that prevents the strut from chaffing against the wires that are near it. This sleeve is in the way and can be pulled upwards towards the strut body so you can see and release the clip that holds the ball socket. 3. Don’t forget to put the plastic sleeve back on the new strut before you install it.

The new Cayenne Turbo S is instantly recognizable with its 21-inch alloy wheels that are housed in wheel arches painted to match the exterior color, and dual-twin sports tailpipes in brushed aluminum. Additionally, the air intake grilles and wheel arch extensions are painted the same color as the Cayenne’s body. Lava Gray Metallic, a new color that is rich yet understated, will be offered as an exclusive option for the Cayenne Turbo S. The CayenneTurbo S comes standard with air suspension, self-leveling and ride-height control, along with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This technology combined with the standard Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and Servotronic speed- sensitive variable power steering allows the driver to enjoy the additional horsepower while still being rewarded with the handling and performance characteristics that you can only find in a Porsche SUV. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system currently offered only on sports cars will be available on all 2009 Cayenne S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S models in conjunction with 20’-inch or larger wheels. PCCB braking power is provided by six piston calipers applied to 16.4-inch ceramic discs in the front and four piston calipers and 14.56-inch discs in the rear. As should be expected, the standard interior of the top-of-the range Turbo S is equipped with high-end features, such as sport seats with memory, carbon trim on the dashboard and door, leather interior in exclusive color combinations (Black/Havanna and Black/Steel Grey), plus a leather steering wheel with padded rim. The Turbo S will be available in the United States in August and pricing will be announced in the near future.

ice President Bill Keegan called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. Attending: Bill Keegan, Kim Nelson, Cookie Anderson, Rik Larson, Ray Silva, Jeff and Kim Kinder, Frederick Rauch, John Murphy and Dick MacFarlane. The April minutes were reviewed and accepted. New Business • Announcements in the Sacramento Bee: The board wants to make sure that all our events are listed in the Sacramento Bee. After discussion it was agreed that Cookie will provide Bill with information on our regular events such as breakfast and dinner meetings and Bill will get them listed in the Bee. We will try this for three months and then see how it works. • CRAB 35: After a lengthy discussion, the board agreed that everything possible should be done to determine whether we can keep the CRAB weekend going in the future. Since we have had difficulty getting club members to volunteer for chairing the event, a suggestion was made that we approach other regions to see whether they would like to share in the responsibility of putting on CRAB in alternate years. Bill will discuss the board’s comments and position with Mike, and further discussion will be scheduled for next months board meeting. • Charity Auction: This year’s Charity Auction event will be held in September at the home of Greg and Cyndee Peart. Old Business • New Roster: Rik Larson noted that the new membership roster is now in the hands of club members. Rik thanked Elliott Hoffman for all his work in putting the roster together for the club. • Christmas Party: Cookie gave an update on the Christmas party, which is scheduled for December 6th at the Aerospace Museum. Budget items for the party were discussed and will be reviewed further at future board meetings. Board Member Reports • Competition (Frederick Rauch): Doug Gale contributed $1,000.00 to the club’s competition program. Thanks, Doug! Frederick continues to look for an autocross chair to replace Matt Deter, who has been doing this job for the past five years. If you have an interest, please contact Frederick at 916.989.0580. Frederick asked for $125.00 to replace the tongue jack on the autocross trailer. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to provide Frederick with the resources to replace the tongue jack.

• Drifter (Bud Behrens): Report received and approved. • Financial Report (Ray Silva): Ray reported that we have money in the bank. A motion was made approved to accept the budget report as received. • Goodie Store (Tom Sisson): Report received and approved. • Membership Director (Rik Larson): SVR has 608 primary members with 496 associate members for a total of 1,104. The club also has 10 dual members. • Social (Cookie Anderson): Keith McMahan submitted a budget for his Oktoberfest tour. It was approved. Cookie reported on the events occurring for the rest of July, August and September. • Webmaster (John Murphy): The website has been revised recently with a new approach to navigation and updated content. Please send John any broken links or “errant behavior” experienced while visiting www.derporsche.net so he can discipline the appropriate language and make things right. The scheduling section of the Home Page offers three approaches to checking on events: 1) the “really soon” events highlighted as before, 2) the most recent copy of the SVR events e-mail blast for notices of mid-range events, and 3) a link to the full calendar, which includes some events in other Zone 7 Regions. The DRIFTER and CLASSIFIED pages continue to be favorite targets. Over 200 pictures from the June 29 Zone Concours at Niello Porsche were received and are available on the Photo Page, as well as other recent events like the BS Twins’ Napa Valley Tour. Finally, it’s now very easy to see from all the pages who the SVR Sponsors are and don’t forget to thank them when you have the chance. • Advertising (Dick MacFarlane): Dick showed the board his marketing materials for promoting The Drifter to potential advertisers and followed up with a page showing our current advertisers and the income generated from them. • Vice President (Bill Keegan): Bill presented a list of events that have happened already this year for board discussion for year-end awards. • Past President (Jeff Kinder): Next month, Jeff wants to discuss 2009 elections. August goodies

by Tom Sisson, SVR Goodie Storekeeper

W

e have the PCA car badge again! We ran out of them at CRAB and since several of you inquired about them, we ordered more. They’re only $18.00. We can get the SVR polo shirt ($30.00) in colors red, white, or blue, as well as the T-shirts and baseball shirts ($20.00). I only have a few baseball shirts left, and the vendor hasn’t been able to find a new source for them. Buy quick! And of course, we still have the SVR car badges ($15.00) and other goodies. You need our stuff; we need your money. Lets get together.

Aren’t all the election happenings fun this year. There is so much information flying around that nobody knows what to believe in - except $4.00+ for a gallon of gasoline. By the way, did you know that George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson never pledged allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. That’s because the pledge didn’t exist until 1892, when Francis Bellamy, a staff member at Youth’s Companion, a boy’s magazine, wrote it as part of a Columbus Day celebration. You all know what the flag flying at half-staff means now. However, it was originally done when a ship lost a battle. The losing crew was obliged to fly the winner’s pennant from the top of their mast. In order to make room for it, the losing captain ordered his own flag to be lowered halfway. By implication, this gesture of respect was also a symbol of loss. Even after this custom faded, captains might dip their flag to a passing ship as a sign of respect, like tipping one’s cap. Eventually the practice was adopted to honor the dead. The Goodie Store brings these bits of knowledge to you. Contact your friendly Goodie Storekeeper. See Tom Sisson at meetings and events, or contact him at 14537 Surrey Junction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685, 209.296.5352 or e-mail targatom@volcano.net. The last word by Bud Behrens

Annual SVR charity auction The information about this year’s annual charity auction arrived after the deadline for the August issue of the Drifter – too late for the creation of a proper display ad for the event. However, since we do have some of the essentials, here they are so you can mark your calendar. The event will be at the Elk Grove home of Greg and Cyndee Peart on Sunday, September 14, 2008. The “social hour” will begin at 11:30 A.M. and the auction will begin at 1:00 P.M. The fee is $5.00 per person and includes the cost of beverages (water, soda, beer, wine, and margaritas). Such a deal! Bring your own lunch. As usual, Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson will be our auctioneers. Last year’s auction brought in a record-breaking $5,330, which was donated to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. (Over the years SVR has raised over $31,000 for that organization alone.) Let’s try for a new record this year. Silver State concours weekend For concours enthuiasts (serious and not-so-serious) or just other Porsche drivers who would like to spend a weekend with other Zone 7 members, this event should not be missed. The setting for the concours, Lampe Park in Gardnerville, NV is very nice, the food at the Basque restaurant is excellent, and Rich Wyett’s barbecue on Sunday will be great. Close, but no cigar The results of the 2007 PCA National Newsletter Contest arrived in early July The Drifter earned a total of 728.5 points in Class IV; the thirdplace award in Class IV went to the Allegheny Region newsletter, which earned 729 points. The rules allow the editor to select two out of a possible twelve annual issues of the newsletter for submission. For last year’s contest, I had only two issue from which I could select. (I did not think it fair to submit issues published by the two previous editors in that year.) For this year’s contest, I had twelve issues from which I could select what I thought were the most representative. On that basis, I thought The Drifter had a chance of winning a higher award. It didn’t happen. SVR member, and former PCA Newsletter Chairman Larry Wilson, did some analysis of this year’s newsletter contest results and sent me some interesting observations which included the number of judges for this year’s contest (supposed to be five, appears there were four), the total number of points possible (according to the results sheet – 920), and that the winner of the Heinmiller Award (overall award) went to the Northern New Jersey Region newsletter with a total of 800 points - 120 points below the maximum possible of 920. Larry also noted that this year’s scores are “significantly below any previous newsletter contest.” Maybe some fuzzy math was used in this year’s contest and maybe that’s why the results sheets haven’t been received yet.
