Chilli’s chatter by Mike Willis
T
his month I will talk about a couple of our typical club events. Rallies can be fun if you approach them that way. Some are time/speed/distance (TSD) in which you are supposed to maintain a certain speed over a measured distance. This is the easy part. The part where some rallies get their bad reputation is the “play on words” the rallymasters dream up in the route instructions (RIs), which are written in accordance with a set of general instructions (GIs). Here is my favorite example of a “trap” as it is called. The trap is designed either to make you arrive early or late at the next checkpoint. The GIs defines STOP as a sign controlling your progress at an intersection. The RIs say to turn right after STOP, which means turn onto the first street you can after the sign. By changing the general instruction to define a STOP as the “intersection” which is controlled by a stop sign, it takes on a whole new meaning. By using the same route instruction now you go through the intersection and turn at the next street. I still enjoy rallying and I treat them just like another tour but try to maintain the speeds in the instructions. There are also other types of rallies such as Gimmick, Hare & Hound, Poker, and scavenger hunt. Last year we had two gimmicks, the A/B put on Keith McMahan and the photo rally by Ann Hamel, which turned out to very enjoyable and still had a degree of competition mixed in. If you are interested rallying, talk to us. Rallies have a bad rap and we hope to change that. An autocross is usually a slow-speed driving skill event that offers the opportunity to learn car control in a very safe environment. Oh, you say: “I already know how to drive.” Yes, but do you know how your Porsche will respond if for some reason you need to push it to a limit? I have found autocross experience to be very beneficial on the street when that “genius” runs the light and you need to take evasive action or when you are driving on a mountain road and another “genius” drifts over the line into your lane and you instinctively react the correct way. And autocrossing is just plain fun. Is an autocross hard on the car? Not really, but it is hard on tires. But if you do not drive the Porsche daily you will still need to replace your tires because of their age. So why not use some the rubber for fun? Come to our next autocross, pair up with one of our instructors, and have fun. Our first breakfast on March 1st was well attended. After breakfast and the meeting was over, many folks stayed and talked among our friends. The brief “meeting” was just that, and the chairpersons discussed some of the upcoming events. At the April breakfast we will try “share-the-wealth” as well. The March dinner (no meeting) will also have “share-the-wealth.” Remember owning a Porsche is supposed to be fun. And if it is not fun, then why are we doing it?

Sanders Aeronautics is an industry leader in all aspects of warbird and vintage aircraft restoration and maintenance. Founded by Frank Sanders in 1970 in Long Beach, the company moved to Chino, California in 1976 and then to their current location at Eagles Nest in Ione in 1996. The Sanders family is also well known throughout the warbird industry as the “Sea Fury Kings” and has been an air-racing dynasty at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada, where they have successfully raced their Sea Furies “Dreadnought” and “Argonaut.” In addition to the airplanes, on site there are a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, a Lamborghini Muira, a 1931 Pierce Arrow, and a 1957 Chrysler 300. Join us on Sunday, April 13th at 10:00 A.M. at Bob Jacobson’s new garage (aka, Jacobson’s IMAX theatre and Porsche Museum) for a gathering of enthusiasts who love their cars. We will talk about the “ins and outs” of proper cleaning, claying, waxing and tire dressing for your Porsche. Have you seen through my thinly veiled attempt to hide anything from you? Yes, it is my way of inviting more people to learn how to take better care of their cars. But most of all, I would like to show you how easy it is to participate in the Zone 7 Concours Series. Drifting Back – April 2008 by Larry Wilson
30 Years Ago (April 1978) THE DRIFTER covered CRAB 7, April 7-9, with a special, green paper twelve-page insert. The 145-car entry field made the event chairs, Ted and Diane Colbert, and co-chairs, Mike and Vicki Willis, very, very, happy. They were ably assisted by Paul Bates (gymkhana), Rik Larson (rally), Mike Willis (autocross), and Dave Neukom and Peter Bogy (beer and brat). Also, Rik Larson and Larry Wilson co-chaired the autocross timing and tech functions, respectively. Tech workers included Leon Biren, Ken Fielding, Bob Matiazzi, Randy Blaesi, Rich Farlinger, Paul Baldarelli, Brian Lewis, Hugh Young, and Don Mahoney. The overall win in the five-leg, 90-mile, rally went to John Clever (34 seconds error), with Keith McMahan in second (48 seconds error), and Don and Ruth Murray of Pacific Northwest Region in third place (66 seconds error). The Murrays also won the long-distance award traveling from Seattle to the event. In the autocross, Brian Lewis almost won the Snidley Whiplash Bassackward Award but, alas, was nipped by Golden Gate’s Susie Atlee after she spun her new 911 five times in three laps. A huge entry prolonged the April 23, Zone 7 Autocross #2, by Redwood Region at Solano Community College, Fairfield (last car finished in the dark at 6:45 P.M.). Rick said the business started in 1921 when his grandfather, Louis Niello, co-founded the
Packard/Pierce-Arrow dealership in San Francisco. Later in the early 50s, his father, Richard Niello, and then-partner Wes Lasher closed their Cadillac business on Van Ness Avenue and “decided to take a run at the Volkswagen business in Sacramento.” Rick said the VW was not only an unknown car, but the concept was so strange that people really wondered whether they ought to check his father into a hospital. Eventually, with Rick at the helm of Niello Porsche, the company was designated a Premier Porsche Dealer by Porsche Cars of North America and became the longest continually operating Porsche dealership in America. Joan Hunnicutt thoughtfully arranged the April 7 dinner meeting at Mediterranean Restaurant in West Sacramento with live Greek music and a real belly dancer. Everyone stayed later than usual. After dinner, the crowd was given a choice: more belly dancing or Jim McDade and the business meeting. Hah! That wasn’t close. SVR Low-Bucks Autocross returned April 17 at Cal Expo, Lot E. Closing out the month of April was CRAB 17, April 29May 1, with Kern & Cindi Breaux as chairs and their helpers: Co-chair-Stan Breyfogle, Registration-Cyndee Nightingale, Hospitality-Tom & Tambra Kroetz, Goodie Store-Suzanne Plantz, Autocross-Mike Willis, Funkhana-Brian Perry (Redwood Region) and Don Henkel (Yosemite Region), Rally-Rik Larson, Beer & Brat-Fred and Fran Siegner, Photography-Greg Peart and Kirk Bradford, Voice of CRAB-Kirk Bradford, Dance Contest-Stan Michelman (Redwood Region), Door Prizes-Ken and Marcella Mitchell, and Red Lion Liaison- Randy Vidmar. Ray Scruggs and Lois Wright of Redwood Region and, for the second consecutive year, Bill and Rebecca Newlin (Golden Gate Region) wrote THE DRIFTER coverage of CRAB. 10 Years Ago (April 1998) The April 4 rally, “The Great Search II,” chaired by Helen Ashuckian, required an SVR member as rally driver and a “child” as navigator with several classes for various age-groups of navigators. Eight-year-old navigator Ryan Fleming wrote the event article for THE DRIFTER after he and his dad, Tim, won their class and received a bear named Rally, Jr., as their prize. The May Begegnen was switched to Friends Grill (Quaker?) with a more suitable (private) room. Twenty cars of PCAers enjoyed Jim and Kellie Finley’s April 19 Amador Wine Tour that started with breakfast at Sloughhouse. SVR had its April 5 Zone 7 Concours at Niello Porsche on Madison Avenue with Tim Fleming as chair. Judged entries included Phil Lawrence with “Fish Lips” (1st, 911/912 Wash & Shine class), Hugh Davey with his superb 356C Cabriolet (1st, 356 Street class), Larry Dunn with his very nice 356C Cabriolet (2nd, 356 Street class), concours newcomers Jim Finley and Patrick Hunter with their gorgeous 928 coupes (1st and 2nd respectively in Water Pumpers Wash & Shine class), Lowell Irwin’s beautiful Carrera (2nd, 911/912 Wash & Shine class), Tim Fleming and Bob Peake (1st and 2nd, respectively, 911 Street classs), Ed Duggan’s 914 (1st, 914 Wash & Shine class), Kent Brandon’s 911 (3rd, 911 Street class),and Steve Borchard

with his clean 912 (6th, 911/912 Wash & Shine class). Workers included Mike and Sue Ambrozewicz with their barbecue, and site crew Dwight Mitchell, Randy Hoffard, and Steve Nieslony. CRAB 26, April 24-26, with Dan and Deb Catherwood as chairs, had Randy and Maureen Vidmar’s funkhana to open the weekend, and Jeff and Kim Kinder blitzed the course with a vanload of 26 people (to celebrate the 26th anniversary of CRAB). They were, of course, disqualified. Top time at the Kern Breaux and Masuo Robinson CRAB autocross went to Tom Provasi after he nipped Jim Hayes. BIG news at Ron and Sally Boeck’s CRAB rally - Rik and Lettie Larson competed together for the first time in 20 years (after a spat at the Aspen Parade rally?). They did reach checkpoints worked by Trische Robertson, George and Nona Morley, Jim and Joyce Karver, Dave and Dolores Johnson, and Larry and Gloria Dunn, but their finish remains a mystery - no rally results.

When everything comes together by Linda McMahen
T
hroughout January and into early February Jim and I painstakingly planned to host our first tour in years. After much thought and careful attention to detail, we arrived at a list of ingredients that compromise the perfect tour. This list includes a beautiful sunny day, twisty roads, picturesque scenery, a pleasant lunch spot, an activity with prizes, a hospitable innkeeper at a fantastic destination and, needless to say, SVR friends. On the morning of our departure, the weather gods smiled on us as we gathered in the Greenhaven Starbuck’s parking lot. While signing the SVR release, tour guests were treated to my home-baked coffee cake. (O.K., it’s from a box; but I did bake it.) Fortified with a cup of coffee, everyone began the day awake and smiling. During the drivers’ meeting, after Jim had gone over the route instructions, it was my job to go over the rules for the competitive part of our tour. Each “car” was handed a game board and enough personal stickers to trade with the other members of the tour. The object of the “Let’s Get Acquainted” game is to make sure everyone speaks to and gets to know one another. Much to my surprise, I totally underestimated the competitive nature of SVR members. When Jim announced, “O.K., let’s go!” rather than get in their cars, people continued to happily trade stickers. They resembled my class of high schoolers at a pep rally. I began to wonder how we would coax people to get into their cars. Of course the announcement that the first person that handed in a completed game board would be awarded the prize of a bottle of Rombaurer Chardonnay added incentive to melee. Finally as engines began to roar, folks got into their cars and we were off. The route that Jim had planned was a combination of freeways and twisting, yet very scenic back roads. All was going smoothly, that is until we reached the San Jose area. That was when Tambra Kroetz could be heard on the walkie-talkie asking if anyone remembered the song “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” Apparently Tom Kroetz does. For although the route instructions clearly stated to take the I-880 on ramp, there was a group, led by Tom “wrong road” Kroetz, that merged onto I-680. This detour created a little confusion followed by a frenzy

of cell phone calls. But I must say that in the end, the I-680 group stuck together and even managed to arrive at Byington Winery, the lunch spot, before the “lead” car, namely us. Byington is a beautiful winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They graciously had set up their picnic tables with umbrellas so our group would be able to eat and relax. Their complimentary wine tasting was pretty good, too. It was here that we took individual photographs of cars and their occupants. After lunch we continued on our trek through the hills, winding our way along the coastline and arriving in Pacific Grove just in time for the complimentary wine and cheese at the Pacific Gardens Inn. Robert Boerner, the innkeeper and a 356 owner,

made everyone feel welcomed by giving us complete access to his private conference room, aka the cocktail room. He had even arranged for next day complimentary entrance to the 17-mile drive and wine tasting at Bernardus Winery located in Carmel Valley. But what also makes a tour memorable are the SVR members! It doesn’t hurt to have Cookie Anderson and her traveling Margarita machine. She and Jerry even brought snacks for everyone. Beth Jacobson also helped us by arranging for the majority of the tour members to have a delicious meal together at Joe Rombie’s, a restaurant in Pacific Grove. Jim McDade even did his part by testing the water in the hot tub to make sure it was the correct temperature. So are you wondering who were the winners of the “Let’s Get Acquainted” game? We all were. When folks got home they received the photograph taken at the winery as a memento and thank you for joining us for a great tour “when everything came together”.

Front license plates on California automobiles? by Keith McMahan and Kevin Dougherty
Editor’s Note: In early March we received this message from Keith McMahan, a long-time SVR-PCA Member. “Bud: I have copied this e-mail to you, because if the CHP officer’s comments are true (about targeting Porsches), then perhaps we should put a note in The Drifter as a warning to other PCA-SVR members.” Rather than just put a warning note in The Drifter, we thought it would informative to include both Keith’s message to SVR member Kevin Dougherty, who is a California Highway Patrolman, and Kevin’s response to Keith’s concerns. First, here’s Keith’s e-mail message. “Hi, Kevin, “I understand you are (or were) associated with the California Highway Patrol. If so, perhaps you can comment on this ‘encounter.’ “I was stopped a few days ago by a CHP officer while driving below the posted speed limit on a road near my home. I was driving a BMW, which had the original German tourist delivery license plate on the front bumper. He said he stopped me because I did not have a California license plate on the front of the vehicle. “I said that I did not believe a front license plate was mandatory. I have been driving this car for 8 years without a front plate, and have driven other cars for many years without a front plate and have never been stopped for this ‘violation.’ Also many other cars on the road do not have front license plates. “He said: ‘We are recently targeting cars, especially Porsches and Corvettes, that do not have front license plates.’ “He also said: ‘There is no ticket this time, but if I ever see this car again without a front plate, it will cost you $150.’ “It seems to me that driving without a plate should be in the same category as driving with a defective taillight or headlight. You receive a ‘fix-it’ ticket and have to show up at a CHP office to see that the repair have been made, and all is forgiven.”
And here are Kevin’s comments. “Hey Keith: “To answer your question, yes. Front license plates are mandatory in California (section 5200 of the California Vehicle Code). “Are we (the CHP) targeting certain cars without them? The answer is ‘no.’ “Is there an area that is having an issue with cars in general without front license plates? That may be and many of them are ’Vetts and Porsches. “It has always been one of those violations where I’m not going to make a U-turn over a raised center median to chase down a car and give a ticket, but you can be stopped and just written up for not having a front license plate. “I usually check for a front plate when I have stopped a vehicle for another violation and issue them a written warning. Some food for thought though: It is P.C. (probable cause) to stop a vehicle any time to check the driver for DUI. I have done this and arrested the driver for DUI simply for having no front license plate. I have also taken drivers to jail for DUI after stopping them for a taillight out, a headlight out, expired registration, etc. “Since I started working the graveyard shift in November, I have stopped five vehicles for tinted front side windows and have taken the driver to jail for DUI. It seems that tinted windows on cars are becoming more frequent, and I do stop those cars and I do cite the drivers - and not with just a ‘fix-it’ ticket either. To me and to many of my peers, front tinted windows are an officer safety issue. “Remember to keep your vehicle and all the equipment in good working order at all times. As I mentioned above, it is probable cause to make a stop and if you are intoxicated (not unnecessarily drunk) you can and will be arrested for DUI!”

The Porsche GT3 RSR: the most powerful racing 911 from Porsche Cars North America
T
he most powerful racecar based on the Porsche 911, which last year scored wins at the 24 hour races of Le Mans and Spa, the GT2 class win at Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, and an overall victory at the Nürburgring 24 hours, competes in the GT2 class at international long distance races. The most distinguishing visual feature of the new GT3 RSR is the front end, which received major improvements to the aerodynamics. The majority of innovations, however, are hidden under the weight-optimized body.
The first American team to announce that it will compete with the 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is the Sonoma, Calif.-based Flying Lizard Motorsports squad, which will enter the GT2 class of the American Le Mans Series with three of the new 911 race cars. Porsche factory drivers Joerg Bergmeister, Wolf Henzler and Patrick Pilet will join veteran Darren Law and Lizard owners Seth Neiman, Lonnie Pechnik and Johannes van Overbeek in the team’s effort to win its first ALMS GT2 championship. Other American Le Mans Series Porsche 911 GT3 RSR entrants plan to announce their plans and driver teams shortl Aside from the additional spoilers on the front apron, new flicks, optimized air ducting with newly designed side air outlets, generate more downforce and reduces drag. The rear end including the rear wing was taken from last year’s racecar. Extensive changes to the suspension dynamics increase mechanical grip considerably. The range of possible suspension set-ups has been increased. The 3.8-liter boxer engine of the GT3 RSR remains unchanged apart from slight improvements to details. It delivers 465 hp (342 kW) at 8,000 revs per minute and delivers a maximum torque of 430 Nm at 7,250 revs. The rev limiter of the efficient six-cylinder kicks in at 9,400 rpm.

The sequential six-speed unit, developed by Porsche engineers, is considerably lighter than its predecessor. Internal friction was substantially reduced. Including the GT3 Cup and the GT3 Cup S, the GT3 RSR is the third racecar based on the Porsche 911 offered by Porsche Motorsport. Thirty-five units of this fastest and most powerful 911 long distance racer are being produced in Porsche’s R&D and Motorsports headquarters Weissach, Germany, and are currently being delivered to customer teams around the globe. Some Cayenne models recalled from PCNA
P
orsche has announced a voluntary recall of Porsche Cayenne SUVs for a potentially misaligned fuel line. The recall involves V6 Cayenne’s built between the start of 2008 model year production through January 18, 2008, of which 5573 units were sold in the United States and 392 in Canada. On these SUVs, it has been discovered that slight engine movement while driving may occur and possibly cause a fuel line to contact the engine compartment cladding. This could cause a knocking sound and in rare instances, abrasion marks could possibly occur on the fuel line itself. There have been five known complaints worldwide, and in only one case did the fuel line show abrasion marks. To avoid the risk of any damage, Porsche will be altering the layout of the fuel line in the vehicles affected. Owners of these potentially affected Cayennes will be informed shortly to take their cars to an authorized Porsche dealer where the fuel line will be rearranged. The procedure will be performed at no charge to the customer and will take approximately 40 minutes to complete.

AX trailer insurance agent and club member Arnold O’Shields has retired and our new agent at State Farm is David Redfield. We’re still looking for a rally chair. Mike asked Frederick to contact Cal Expo about a possible autocross site. • Drifter (Bud Behrens): Report received and approved.
New Business • Goodie Store (Tom Sisson): Report received and approved. • May Board Meeting: The May board meeting is the same evening as the May dinner meeting but the board will hold a short meeting that evening.
• Financial Report (Betty Silva): Ray discussed the bank balances with the board and yes, we still have money.
• July Board Meeting: Bill Keegan will preside over the July Board Meeting in Mike’s absence.
• G24 (Lee Deter): The first G24 event will be on Saturday, March 8th.
• Trailer Storage: A motion was made to reaffirm the e-mail vote the board had done to move the club’s trailer to a paid storage facility. Five voted in favor, two abstained and one (Jeff, PastPresident) opposed. The motion was passed.
• Membership Director (Rik Larson): Rik is planning on getting the 2008 membership directory to the printer by the end of March. Rik is ordering board member badges. As of March 1st the club has 626 primary members and 505 affiliate members for a total of 1031 members plus 10 dual members. The New member tour is March 29th.
• Directory/Roster Printing: Rik presented the layout for the 2008 club directory and asked the board members to confirm their information. Old Business • 2008 Budget: The 2008 Budget was presented by Ray Silva and discussed. Frederick thought the Competition budget was incorrect and is going to discuss it with Betty. A motion was made and seconded to adopt the budget as presented with corrections to be considered during the month. The board unanimously approved the budget. • Advertiser Payments: We have four Drifter advertisers who have not yet paid their 2008 advertising invoices. Mike Willis took the action item to contact Dick MacFarlane and determine their status. If payments are not made by March 20th, their ads will be removed them from The Drifter. •E-mail Blast: Cookie reported that she has received a number of e-mails from club members expressing their satisfaction with our new e-mail blast procedure. Our two guests (Ray and Paul) also said that they liked the format and found it very helpful. Board Member Reports • DRAB Update: We have 48 registrants as of right now and all seems in great shape to have another great CRAB Weekend. Our CRAB Registrar, Rik Larson, is anticipating 70 to 75 cars. • Competition: Everything is in place for the April CRAB autocross in Stockton. Frederick is going to be making some repairs to the autocross trailer and has put these repairs in his budget. Our
• Social (Cookie Anderson): Thirty-one people attended the first SVR breakfast gathering at Marie Callender’s and a good time was had by all. We will have “Share-the-Wealth” at the next gathering in April. • Webmaster (John Murphy): The SVR website had 128,000 hits in February. Interestingly, the club “history” pages were some of the most frequently visited. Also interesting, but not surprising, was heavy access of the CRAB information. The most-requested file was the March Drifter. As usual, we got the most hits from the United States, however, February saw China come in 2nd. San Marino is the “locale of interest” and lots of interest from the CIA (not the one in NAPA) using the link on the summary page at the bottom of the home page. (No, it is not owned by Dan Marino.) • Vice President (Bill Keegan): A couple of events were added to the calendar during the past month, and they are listed on our website as well as in our e-mail blasts. • Past President (Jeff Kinder): No Report •President (Mike Willis): Mike asked Jeff to schedule some time for a group of us to go through the “stuff ” we have in our storage facility. Mike received a letter from the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition thanking the club for its $5,330.00 donation. Adjournment was at 9:04 P.M. is coming at the end of April, and I hope you are all going. “Aprilis,” which means “to open” in Latin, was used to describe the month when trees and flowers began to grow. The name was then shortened to April. So come on and open up your pocket books and spend those big tax returns at the Goodie Store! This is the time to get that NEAT STUFF to be “cool” at CRAB. You really should have your PCA and SVR car badges ($18.00 and $15.00) prominently mounted for CRAB, and it is definitely necessary to order your SVR logo shirts (just $30.00) and your “PORSCHE” script T-shirts (just $20.00) to wear to CRAB! Revised classified ad policy In the “old days,” in order to print photographs on newsprint, it was first necessary to take them to a professional photo lab or a commercial printer and pay for them to be turned into what are called “halftones.” Since the advent of the “electronic press,” digital photography, and scanners, this intermediate step is no longer necessary. Therefore, there is no longer a fee for photos accompanying classified ads submitted by PCA members.
