Chilli’s chatter by Mike Willis

T

hanks for your continued support into 2008. Remember: this is your club and we try very hard to make it fun. I think we were able to accomplish this during 2007, but this was only through the efforts of those members who came up with ideas and/or then carried them out to produce the many excellent events we had in 2007. A part of the board’s responsibility is to decide which events stood out during the year and to recognized them at the Christmas party with some nice awards. Because we had so many wonderful events to choose from in 2007, it was extremely hard to decide which to honor. The following events and individuals were presented their awards during the Christmas party for their efforts and dedication to making their participation worthy of our annual recognition.

2007 Share the Wealth - Herb and Jan Hoover 2007 Concours Photographers - Ira and Carol McKee 2007 Autocross Hidden Hero - Lee Deter 2007 Napa Wine Tour - Sheila McDade and Barbara Flores 2007 “A Marriage of Porsches” - Stephen and Vicki Childs 2007 Event of the Year - The Mendocino Tour, Rik and Lettie Larson 2007 New Member of the Year - Collin Fat 2007 Social Event of the Year - Western Railway Museum Tour, Doug Klein and John Payne 2007 Dinner Meeting of the Year - “Under Fire,” Claudia Cypher 2007 Competition Event of the Year - Niello Concours, Kim Nelson and Kent Brandon 2007 “Out of the Box” - A/B Rally, Keith McMahan and Mary Dachauer 2007 “Out of the Box” - Photo Rally, Ann and Matt Hamel

As mentioned last month, I had asked for some input about whether we should have an alternative to dinner meetings. There has been some very good input on this subject, and we hope to have even more at the beginning of the planning meeting on January 10th. This is when we will work on our calendar for 2008. So bring your ideas for tours, dinners, brunches, rallies, autocrosses, and those out-of-the-box events that were so successful this year and can be again in 2008. If you are unable to attend, send your ideas to me or to the social or competition chairs. Remember: you do not have chair the events, but it does help. And . . . It has to be fun or we should not be doing it.

Y

ou’re invited to join us for two and a half days of fun, camaraderie and exhilaration of being part of the Premier Porsche Weekender - CRAB 34, April 18 - 20 - the only annual Zone 7 multi-region, multi-event weekend. CRAB is best described as two and a half days of partying, occasionallyinterrupted by tours and competitive activities, with fun and camaraderie as the most important ingredient. Welcome Party and Registration. The Fair Oaks VFW Lodge will be the setting to start the weekend. Renew friendships and make new ones, while sipping and tasting. No-host adult beverages will be available. Door prizes will also be presented. Funkhana. Test your driving skill in maneuvering your Porsche through a twisting course at low speed, while performing a series of tasks. The driver starts a timer entering the course, then may be asked to fold a map, shoot a basketball into a waste basket, back up through sections of the course and other devious tricks devised by Jon Kramer and Tom Sisson. And don’t forget to shut off the timer. Driving Tour. Doug Klein and Carl Brakensiek have planned two tours. Weather permitting, we’ll travel the Sierras through historic Georgetown and Stumpy Meadows Lake (over 6,000 ft.). Lunch will be at the St. Pauli Inn with authentic German cuisine. If still icy, we’ll explore lower elevations, adding Mosquito Road, two premium wineries and enjoy a picnic. Walking Tour. Herb and Jan Hoover have added a new twist. You’ll visit Folsom’s most interesting and historic sites: a PG&E powerhouse, the Folsom Prison museum, historic Sutter Street, the Gekkeikan Sake distillery, the Folsom Zoo and three parallel bridges: the 1893 single-lane truss bridge, for horses, cattle and wagons, the two-lane 1919 Rainbow bridge and the fourlane 1999 Lake Natoma Crossing bridge. Autocross. Everyone from box-stock firsttimers to zoomie-car veterans will enjoy Matt Deter’s course. Each driver will have 5 to 6 runs. Coaching will be available for first-timers. CRAB 34 Banquet and Dance. This is the centerpiece of the weekend. Feast on crab prepared by Rudy’s Hideaway (chicken will also be available) and dance the night away to the sounds of the CRAB 34 DJ. Rally. Both novice and expert will enjoy Helen Ashuckian’s tour/rally on Sunday morning. Never rallied? Not to worry: non-finishers qualify for the infamous “Lost Crab” award. The rally will end at CRAB headquarters at 10:00, just in time for the Concours. Beer ‘n’ Brat Picnic. Wind down the weekend on Sunday at the traditional German beer and bratwurst picnic. Enjoy tasty bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, cole slaw and dessert. Wash it all down with specialty beers, lemonade, wine and iced tea. CRAB Concours. While sipping and munching, browse beautiful concoursprepared Porsches, ranging from polished to perfection to “what you see is what you get.” Autocross, rally-tour, concours awards, and the Grand Door Prize will be presented. Drifting back – January 2008 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (January 1978) The newly-elected 1978 board included: President Paul Bates, Vice President Rik Larson, Secretary Diane Colbert, Treasurer Delores McKinnon, Activities Chair Marv Smith, Tech Chair Peter Bogy, Social Co-chairs Linda Bogy and Vicki Moore, Publicity Chair Jim Boswell, Drifter editor Lettie Larson, and Past President Harvey Cain. The January 22 Rally de Bus rally school was a terrific success with Stan Breyfogle and Rik Larson sharing professor duties for 76 participating students from SVR, Loma Prieta, Redwood, Yosemite, and Sierra Nevada regions. Stan and Rik acquired two school buses, courtesy of SVR members Eva and Dennis Kay, and traversed a rally course with each bus having 38 navigators. The students got an explanation of each instruction and situation as they actually saw it in front of them. No one got lost on this rally. The January 28 Zone 7 autocross awards banquet was held at the Willow Park Golf & Country Club in Castro Valley. After jokes from Hank Malter, Dwight Mitchell and Tony Maslowski, the entertainment began with 1977 autocross awards to lots of SVR members: Linda & Dwight Mitchell, Vicki & Mike Willis, Diane & Ted Colbert, Chrissie & Dave Neukom, Sheila & Jim McDade, Pat & Larry Wilson, Kerry Creasy, Rich Farlinger, and Jerry Freitas. 20 Years Ago (January 1988) The votes are in - all 53 of them - a land-slide victory, according to Nominations Chair, Stan Breyfogle, for members of the new 1988 SVR board: President Jim McDade, Vice President Randy Vidmar, Secretary Stan Breyfogle, Treasurer Herb Hoover, Social Director Karen Taggart, Competition Director Rik Larson, Membership Director Bob Jacobson, Newsletter Editor Larry Wilson, and Past President Kirk Bradford. At the January 5th board meeting, CRAB 17 chair, Kern Breaux, reported he had 23 entries thus far, ahead of the 1987 count at this point. Membership Chair, Bob Jacobson, presented applications for seven new members and announced he would form a new committee to give greater attention to new members

as they join the club. Big news item -- Connie Farlinger and Harvey Cain got married January 1, 1988, during a secret ceremony in Baghdad-by-theBay (Caen-speak for San Francisco). January 7th and 8th planning days were a smashing success with Randy Vidmar holding forth in the East Ranch Clubhouse with help from Rik Larson and Karen Taggart. The Mendocino tour was back, as Kirk Bradford in his formative years pronounced the word after a few too-many glasses of wine. Two big activities for the month - Quality Time T&D rally on January 15 with J. Toney as rallymaster, and the Winchester House tour January 16 with refreshments later at Who•Song & Larry’s. Winchester tour-leaders for 13 SVR cars were Ken and Marcella Mitchell and Steve and Karen Taggart. 10 Years Ago (January 1998) SVR’s 1998 board of directors included President Bob Peake, Vice President Barbara Borzymowski, Secretary Jose Uranga, Treasurer Shelagh Matthews, Social Chair Sue Ambrozewicz, Membership Chair Masuo Robinson, Competition Chair Dwight Mitchell, Drifter Editor Mike Willis, and Past President Rik Larson. The 1998 SVR Activities Planning extravaganza on January 15th at the Metro Pizza & Grill, Highway 50 and Bradshaw, featured Barbara Borzymowski wielding the baton in front of 50 members who offered up a year’s-worth of ideas for activities ranging from ice skating, bowling, salmon fishing, and wine drinking to hot-air ballooning. Wow! And, that’s just the competitive events! The 1998 version of the SVR White Elephant Gift Exchange on January 24 at Chuck’s Grill in Folsom with Tambra Kroetz in charge, was a zany evening for 39 members in attendance. A photo, which made the cover of the March Drifter, showed Helen Ashuckian, Rich McGlumphy, and Susan Fleming cracking-up over a mystery person disguised with a toilet seat riser around his head. This was the exact moment when the evening’s hilarity peaked, as it were.

PCA/SVR and the Los Angeles auto show by Dan Rowland, assisted by Bill Keegan

W

hen the announcement that the Los Angeles auto show would move to November ahead of the San Francisco show and be the introducer of 44 new auto models to the U.S. market, including the Porsche GT2 and the Cayenne GT, Bill and I decided we should attend the show. As volunteers for the Monterey Concours d’Elegance, we manned the media registration table where we met a variety of media types, foreign and domestic, and ranging from the automotive media giants to the smallest local newsletters. I decided to request media credentials as a representative of PCA/SVR and The Drifter. Six months of e-mail messages and multiple calls got us “journalist” credentials (I was the journalist and Bill was the of-

d and Marsha Littrell had a little more interesting experience on the recent Mendocino Tour than they bargained for. On Saturday night their Boxster wouldn’t start. Other club members tried to help, including trying to push-start the car, but to no avail. On Sunday, after due deliberation, they decided to flatbed their car back to Niello Porsche in Rocklin. The local tow company, Walker’s Towing Inc., did a good job, getting to the Hill House right away and transporting the car from Mendocino to Rocklin. It turned out that the contacts on the Boxster’s immobilizer had corroded and immobilized the car. So they know the anti-theft device works! The car was back on the road in short order.

ficial photographer) plus an invitation to the media presentations prior to the show. I also pursued, and received from Porsche AG, three-week-long event passes that were used for multiple visits to the show. I extend many thanks to Paul Gregor of Porsche AG for his efforts on our behalf. Bill and I spent eight hours at the event and probably missed some of the cars. An event like this brings to light what a small part an individual car owner plays in the scheme of things. And no matter how big the wallet, there is still more “stuff ” you can buy for your garage treasure. My Christmas list includes a dozen different wheel choices and as many for different tires, and then, of course, different color Porsche hats, coats, sweaters, etc., for each day of the week. We saw the special-edition Boxster and the special black Cayman S package. We also saw a gorgeous new green color for the hybrid car as well as a chocolate brown for the Turbo cabriolet. An entire hall was devoted to Porsche. Another hall was dedicated to aftermarket products: the offerings for Porsche and other exotics were plentiful. You could easily spend a day in that hall just considering how to “pimp” your ride including stereo systems for $30k and up, black chrome wheels, and stainless steel everything that isn’t ostrich skin leather or, of course, carbon fiber. During the week here I visited several dealerships for cars and, specifically, for wheels. The best quality wheels and an unbelievable source of knowledge on Porsche fitments was The Zone (Zonewheels.com). Their engineer discussed wheels and tires that fit Porsches, and specifically for the four different cars in which I was interested. I learned more in fifteen minutes that I had in all of my Internet research and dealer questions put together. Steve Wilson is the owner and Bob Hale is the engineer; both are willing to answer your Porsche fitment questions. You may contact them by calling 949.951.2718. They will help with your choices and packages and then you can go to Americas/Discount Tire to order and deal with pricing.

The further education of Emily

ur trip to Virginia International Raceway with Kevin Buckler’s The Racers Group introduced Emily to the world of Porsche professional racing. Our latest trip, on November 1st through 4th to Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona International Speedway, gave her an insight into Porsche racing history. Brian Redman and his son James, along with Porsche Cars North America and PCA, all did a bang-up job of rounding up over one hundred historic racecars, as well as many of the guys who drove those cars. Among the drivers were Vic Elford, David Hobbs, Hurley Haywood, Patrick Long, Gils van Lennep, Joe Buzzetta, Derek & Justin Bell, Bjorn Waldegard, Chip Robinson and Richie Atwood - just to name a few. All weekend I kept asking myself “who is that guy?” I know I walked right past a lot of famous drivers. Of course, PCNA was well represented with CEO Peter Schwarzenbauer and Bob Carlson. PCA had President Prescott Kelly (who did great job announcing the events) Past President Tom Bobbitt, Vu Nguyen, Dr. Leonard and Betty Jo Turner (along with their daughter and grandkids) and, of course, our own Bruce and Stephanie Anderson. The weekend started off with Emily getting to drive a new Boxster. While waiting, who drives up but Hurley Haywood who posed with her. You could have Haywood drive you around the track for $100 - for charity of course. Some of the friends we came across were Stephen Childs

(on crutches after a freak accident by his pool) Mark Smedley, Bob Garretson, George Neidel, and ex-SVR member Gary Stratton who now owns a Porsche parts and car prep company in Winter Park, Florida. Gary looked the same - big and happy. We heard the Flemings were there but we never saw them. Considering the size of Daytona, it’s not surprising. PCAers had access to everything except for the main grandstands, which were being painted to make them look full of fans to the TV cameras. No really!! The multi-colors on each seat look like a person wearing an Aloha shirt to the TV camera. Only in Florida. Great race viewing was available all around the infield with pop-ups, coolers and deck chairs everywhere. You won’t find that at a NASCAR race. The Porsche corral was a quarter mile long, with most cars placed by model. Strangely enough, there were no Cayennes in the lot although there were many running around the area. However, we did find a turbocharged and winged Cayman S. As usual, the corral was a show unto itself, with rows of 356s, 911s, 914s, etc. Great photo ops abounded. Get this: the first folks we spoke to were from Charleston! How’s that for a small world? The cars – OMG - the cars! Every model of racing Porsche from the Formula 2 RSK718 to the Trans Siberia 2007 Cayennes to the Penske RS Spyders was either in the garages, out in the paddock, or being driven around. It was a photographers dream.

Owners and drivers would even position the cars if asked and, of course, pose with the fans. We took full advantage of that. None were roped off. Quite a few had displays detailing the cars history. It was mind-boggling: here were three 917s and there were two Porsche tractors. And over there a nice green 911 that ran in the East African Safari Rally, complete with special mud flaps. Emily and I both ran out of space on our camera memory cards; thank heaven we had spares. Of course there was racing - lots of racing. Friday and Saturday were practice days. Sunday was qualifying and racing. There were classes for all the historic as well as regular racecars. Can you even imagine a whole race made up of 906, 907, 908, 910 and 917 models? The sounds were glorious! There were traffic jams on pit lane. As we had the run of the place, pit lane was packed. As long as we stayed off of the pit lane wall, the officials left us alone, except that they went nuts if we walked on the grass on the front straight. (I wonder what they say to the NASCAR guys when they spin off onto the grass?) To their credit, the grass was like a putting green - beautiful. . You’ll never get this close and personal at Laguna Seca. Have you ever seen a Cayenne on the same track with a 917? It was crazy fun!

Emily surrounded by the Penske Crew

- well I had to see it. The concours was held in pit lane with the cars grouped in classes, i.e. 956 962 917 models made up one class while 934 & 935s made up another, etc. There were about forty cars in the show. Bruce and Mark judged the IROC 934-935 class. There was a whole row of 917s and endless 911 variants. Anyway when all was said and done, Joe Buzzetta walked away with the overall win with his wonderfully restored 908 “Flounder” chassis #026. Sad to say there, wasn’t a 1972 911T to be seen. 365s in the Porsche Corral Well, that’s about it. The long, boring (but fast) drive on I95 was really worth it. And the stops at the Navy’s Kings Island submarine base and St. Augustine helped. Emily is still working on her 1972 911T Targa in hopes of entering the 2008 Parade in Charlotte. Me? I’m just along for the ride. If anyone wants to see more from this event, drop me a line at philinchas@yahoo.com

Trophies

Emily and I spent a lot of time in victory circle taking photos and talking to the drivers. The trophies were 1/18 scale 935/917 models mounted on mahogany bases - quite nice. Between races we cooled off in the PCNA hospitality suite or on the covered roof. It was great up there with a 360-degree view of the track. Oh by the way, PCNA was serving California wine. It went well with the low-fat cereal bars. Then there was the concours. Now, I don’t usually have much interest in these events but when it’s made up of exotic racecars

Porsche’s hybrid legacy spans 100 years

The Lohner-Porsche from PCNA*

F

erdinand Porsche developed the world’s first advanced electric car, all-wheel drive car and hybrid car at the turn of the 20th Century. Porsche, a name long associated with engineering innovation, stunned the automotive world by introducing the world’s first advanced electric car – a vehicle that also led to the world’s first hybrid car. While this “green” alternative to petroleum-based transportation may be considered a mundane news story in the 21st Century when green technology announcements are a daily occurrence, a 24-year-old engineer by the name of Ferdinand Porsche developed, produced and raced such a car more than 100 years ago when horseless carriages were in their infancy. Working for Jacob Lohner & Co. in Vienna, Austria in 1899, Ferdinand Porsche, father of Dr. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, who in 1948 founded the Porsche high-performance sports car and SUV company we know today, developed and built the world’s first automobile that used electric wheel hub motors rather than a fossil-fuel combustion engine and transmission to drive the wheels. It was called the Lohner-Porsche. A Lohner-Porsche and concept versions of the Hybrid Cayenne® SUV were shown at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show held November 14-25, 2007. Ferdinand Porsche installed his patented invention, the electric wheel hub motor, directly on the front wheels. Standard output was 2.5 horsepower at 120 rpm, but they were capable of 7 horsepower each for up to 20 minutes. This technology could provide speeds of just over 10 mph and a top speed of about 31 mph. Using a 44-cell battery with 300 ampere hours and 80 volts, Porsche’s new vehicle had a range of about 30 miles. It was as “the greatest invention of the age” by one trade journal because electric wheel hub motors eliminated the need for a transmission, gears, belts, chains, differentials and other moving parts and could be produced very quickly, this drive train was 83 percent efficient because there was no mechanical loss due to friction. Its debut at the World’s Fair in Paris on April 14, 1900 hurled Ferdinand Porsche to worldwide fame overnight and prompted Lohner to produce and sell well over 300 such vehicles. Soon after, Porsche took his invention to the racetrack. On September 23, 1900 he fitted his electric wheel hub motorcar with a larger battery and set his first speed record at Semmering, covering the 6.2-mile route in less than 15 minutes with an average speed of 25.5 mph. The best internal combustion engine powered car averaged 21.5 mph. Later that year, Porsche fitted his wheel hub motors on all four wheels, thus producing the world’s first all-wheel drive car. To give the car sufficient power and range, it required nearly 4,000 lbs. in batteries, proving to be the same challenge faced by today’s engineers. He tried to solve this dilemma by fitting the all-electric speed-record car with two De Dion Bouton gasoline engines producing current for the electric power train. The result was the world’s first hybrid. He again surprised the automotive world when this new concept debuted at the 1901 Parisian Auto Salon. His design 12

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger witnesses Porsche’s first “zero emission” automobile from 1900 as Porsche’s Engineer Wolfgang Duerheimer describes the car that led to the first hybrid ever. used the 3.5-horsepower combustion engines to drive dual generators to supply current to the two wheel hub motors on the front wheels. It also was possible to run the gasoline engines after start up to so that the electric motor functioned as a generator and kept the battery charged. If necessary, both the combustion engines and electric motors could be used in parallel. Porsche stepped up performance and created variations delivering 5 to 12 horsepower. And in 1902 he piloted his hybrid during trial runs at the Exelberg race, finishing first in the large-car class and third overall. Porsche went on to develop automobiles for Austro-Daimler, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in Stuttgart, and Steyr-Werke AG in Austria before forming Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH in 1931. He is most remembered as the inventor of the Volkswagen Beetle, yet his innovative work in the areas of electric and hybrid drive systems is substantial. His wheel hub motor resurfaced decades later when the concept was used to power the Lunar Rover during NASA’s Apollo missions to the moon. Today, his innovative spirit lives on at Porsche AG’s Research and Development Center in Weissach, Germany, where the company is applying its engineering strength to develop hybrid systems for the Cayenne SUV and the upcoming Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. *Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Concours de CRAB by Jeff Kinder

I

t’s time for your annual trunk cleaning. As in the past, CRAB 34 will have two types of concours competition - one type for the serious competitor and one for the, well let’s just say, not so serious competitor. If you like to compete in a traditional concours event, that’s great because we will have that type of event for you. There will be a class for your Porsche in which it will be judged by the standards of the traditional “wash-and-shine” concours rules. If you know what “traditional” means, you will want to enter your Porsche here. For those of you who do not have previous concours experience, but want to get started into the serious art of concours, the CRAB is a good place to start. According to the SVR web site, concours offers “the opportunity to pamper your Porsche and lovingly prepare it to be appreciated by a team of judges (often) drawn from fellow Porsche lovers.” To make things interesting, there will be different competition groups. If you are interested in learning more about the official concours rules, you can download and read the 2006 Zone 7 Competition Series Rules on the Zone 7 web site at: http://zone7.pca.org/index. php?page=rules. Click on the “Concours Rules” link. Pay the most attention to the Wash and Shine section. On the other side of the coin, if you have never attended a previous CRAB, or think that all concours events are just for clean freaks and perfect Porsches, prepare to be surprised. The “fun” concours is like no other concours event you have ever attended. All the above rules are thrown out. As for the rulebook, we throw that out, too. Every year, totally new, strange, and possibly outrageous rules are written. Don’t ask for them ahead of time so you can prepare your car, because no one knows yet what the judging standards will be until just before the judging begins. Is your Porsche clean, polished, and gleaming? You may be docked points for that. Left you score card on the seat? This may help or may not. Is an SVR or PCA logo not visible on or in your Porsche? That may or may not be helpful. Is there an empty soda can on the floor? O.K, you get the idea. The best way of winning is to just bring your Porsche “as is” and park it on the concours field. This concours is all about having fun and showing off your Porsche. Who knows, you may be driving the “numero uno” concours winning Porsche! Your CRAB committee would love to have every Porsche attending CRAB 34 entered in one or the other of the concours events, win a coveted CRAB 34 trophy, and be the envy of all your Porsche friends.

Bob Holbert, 1923-2007 from PCNA*

R

obert McCormick Holbert, one of the first Porsche dealers in the country and a prominent Porsche race driver in the 1950s and 1960s, died in his native Warrington, Pennsylvania, on Monday, November 12, 2007. Born in Warrington in 1923, Bob opened a general purpose automotive garage in the late ‘40s, moving to the more famous Holbert’s Garage building across the street in 1951 when he started a repair and parts business specializing in foreign and sports cars. In 1954, Holbert’s Garage became one of the first authorized Porsche dealers in the country, and continues today as one of the most well-known and oldest Porsche dealerships in America. Holbert’s love and knowledge of cars included a distinguished racing career, with awards ranging from The New York Times “Best Sports Car Driver” three separate years to top finishes in the 12 Hours of Sebring. He drove to a record six class victories at Sebring, including second overall in 1960. His racing career started in 1953 in an MG, then moved to Porsches in 1957 after seeing driver Jack McAfee pass seven drivers – all cars with bigger engine displacements – in a Porsche 550 Spyder at Cumberland Raceway. His subsequent racing activities in Porsche RS-550 and RSK led to four SCCA National Championships, and a podium finish at Le Mans with Masten Gregory. Holbert also sold Roger Penske his first race car (1958). “Through his dealership and racing successes, Bob Holbert helped establish the Porsche brand in America,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, president and chief executive officer of Porsche Cars North America. “He was a true American Porsche pioneer.” Holbert later became a Shelby Cobra team factory driver, winning the first United States Road Racing Championship title in 1963. He and frequent co-driver Dave McDonald won the GT Class at Sebring in 1964. McDonald’s death in a racing accident at Indianapolis several months later was a major factor in Bob Holbert’s decision to retire from racing later that year. Son Al Holbert, who also helped run the dealership and was the President of Porsche Motorsport North America, had a brilliant racing career of his own, winning twice at Sebring (1976 and 81), the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, and multiple IMSA titles before his remarkable career was cut short by a 1988 plane crash. His other son, Larry, has been the president and general manager of the family-owned dealership for the past 25 years. *Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Happy New Year by Tom Sisson

H

ere it is - January 2008, a new year. It is time to spend all that money that you have left over from Christmas, and also to prepare for the cooler weather. Look no further than the SVR Goodie Store. As of this writing, we have some great new ball caps ($15.00) in stock as well as denim shirts ($35.00), microfiber jackets ($55.00), and fleece vests ($35.00.) We also have, or can order, various sweat shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and other cool weather clothing items. Special items can be embroidered onto any of the clothing; check out the SVR web site for more details. All of the usual items (badges, T-shirts, polo shirts) are also available. Also, don’t forget that the Goodie Store can get you the merchandise that is sold by PCA National at no additional cost (maybe even cheaper). This is another way that PCA helps its regions to meet their costs! And if you had a little too much to drink on New Year’s Eve, comfort yourself with the fact that you are just one of a long line of people. The New Year celebration is the oldest of all holidays, being first observed about four thousand years ago. Around BC 2000, the New Year began with the first new moon crescent after the first day of spring. Spring is a logical time to start a new year because it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. The Romans continued to observe the New Year in late March, but various emperors continually tampered with the calendar so that it soon did not coordinate with the sun. To correct this, the Roman senate, in BC 153, declared that January 1 started the New Year. But tampering continued, until Julius Caesar, in BC 46, established the Julian Calendar and January 1st as the New Year. The Romans also dedicated that day to their God of Gates and Doors, Janus, who is commonly depicted with two faces - one looking at what is past and the other looking toward what lies ahead. Thus, Janus is representative of contemplation on the happenings of an old year while looking forward to the new. See Tom Sisson at meetings and events, or contact him at 14537 Surrey Junction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685, 209.296.5352 or E-mail targatom@volcano.net Items can be mailed for a small shipping/handling fee.
