his month we will have our annual charity auction. In the past we have been very successful in giving something back to our community. Of course, this has been possible only through the efforts of those of our members who have generously participated in the auction. In addition, this auction is extremely entertaining because of the wit and humor of our auctioneers, Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson, who have been doing this for the last 26 years. Kirk even comes up from San Diego to continue on with his support of the auction. The details about the event are on page 4. Kern and Cindi Breaux have chaired the auction for numerous years and consistently come up with new ideas and “products” to be auctioned. Of course, there is always the “very last Steve McQueen poster” that Larry seems to locate for our auction. Also it is the very “fine” items that some of our members bring to the auction. In the past Rachel Johnson has brought some extremely nice works of glass. What I am trying to say is that this is a good thing for the club and the community; it’s fun and entertaining, and, at the same time, we give back to the community. Over the past years we have been able to raise a good amount of funds for the charities we have selected to be the beneficiaries. A summary of the success of the auction is as follows: 2001 - $3600 divided equally between the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. 2002 - $4000 given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. 2003 - $4200 given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. 2004 - $4300 given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. 2005 - $4600 given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. 2006 - $5000 given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Over the last six years our members have donated over $25,700 to these charities, for an average of over $4282 per year. None of this could have been achieved without the help of a number of PCA members who have been afflicted with one of the most deadly forms of cancer in which the successful recovery rate is less than 10% after diagnosis. Most of the time the diagnosis does not come until the cancer is in its third or fourth stage, which means almost certain death within a relative short period of time. Over these last five years Kern and Cindi have come to know some of the most courageous women in the world as they battle this deadly disease. Kern & Cindi are truly grateful to the members of SVR for their generosity and their understanding of why they have chosen this organization to be the recipients of our annual charity auction. This auction can be successful only with the members’ help in bidding for the various items. And as a plus, the afternoon is fun; and that is just one of the reasons we do it. Mark your calendar and join us in the auction frenzy. It’s great way to meet new friends.

Drifting back - September 2007 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (September 1977) Sixty-five SVR members traveled to the Garden Valley Country Club near Fairfield for the September 9 joint dinner meeting with ten members of Redwood Region. The deluxe affair, arranged by club manager (and SVR member), Phillip Marks, offered golf and tennis tournaments (chaired by Bob Schleh and Joyce and Jim Karver respectively) followed by a most enjoyable evening banquet. Merle Dodd and Joyce Karver won the men’s and women’s tennis tournament, no report about the golfers. The September 10/11, Redwood-Sacramento Valley Driving School at Sears Point completed the weekend for Paul Bates, Jim and Sheila McDade, Geary and Linda Lyons, Darrel and C.C. Overstreet, Peter Bogy, Dave Neukom, and Dale Newhouse. The first track session went very smoothly, but the rest of the event went south, both on and off the track. Fortunately, festivities ended before it got too terribly out of hand, and the group went to Cattlemen’s to do what they did second best - eat. SVR’s September 18 Zone 7 autocross attracted 156 drivers and 40 SVR workers. Tech workers included Delores McKinnon, Larry Dunn, Jim Bonney, Leon Biren, and Kirk Bradford. Carrera de Sierra III, a two-day, September 24/25, time and distance rally with Rik Larson as rallymaster, was still in its flower with 84 rally cars (including 40 PCA teams) traversing back roads on Saturday (six checkpoints) through Sonora to Yosemite Park for a banquet and overnight stay, and then three more rally legs back to the finish in Stockton on Sunday. Workers included Al King, Lettie and Lee Larson, Phillip Marks, Larry and Pat Wilson, Mike Willis, Dave Neukom, Ray and Frankie Engle, and Rich and Gail Burke. SVR members who trophied were Jim and Joyce Karver (2nd, Expert Unequipped), Dave Brewer (2nd Novice Equipped), Ted and Diane Colbert (5th, Novice Unequipped), Barbara and John Smolich (6th, Novice Unequipped), and Ted Strutz (10th, Novice Unequipped).

20 Years Ago (September 1987) The September Drifter cover featured a nice shot of Rich McGlumphy in autocross action with his 914-6. That issue also pictured Fred Siegner putting on the 18th green at Riverbend Golf and Country Club, C.C. Craig receiving his closest-to-the

pin award from Shelia McDade, Ray Clements at the wheel of his 924 just after navigator Mike Willis got them lost on the Vacaville BBQ tour, and Sally Boeck teaching Sara Clements how to stick out her tongue in response to the black flag at a GGR time trial. Memorable days were those! Fifty-four SVR members in 27 Porsches hit five truly great wineries during the September 13 Wine Tour by Jim McDade and Kirk Bradford. “At the Napa Creek Winery, the fellow in charge kept giving us a bunch of full bottles after we volunteered to help them out by pouring our own samples for tasting,” Jim said and added, “They kept opening, so we kept tasting.” The 1987 version of Carrera de Sierra, a two-day, September 26/27, time and distance rally, with Stan Breyfogle as chairman and John Clever as rallymaster, attracted 33 rally cars including 15 cars from PCA. They left Rancho Cordova over the Mormon Immigrant Trail to Mono Lake, and then to lunch in Bridgeport, and then to Lee Vining and into the back-way to Yosemite Park for the evening barbecue under the stars. After returning the next day, they had clocked 12 hours of actual rally time. Low score for PCA entrants was Phillip Marks and D.D. King who finished 1st in Expert Unequipped with a score of 266 seconds. Tom & Linda Gardner were 2nd in Beginner Class with 270 seconds. Sanford and Ellen Chance were 1st in Novice Class with 388 seconds. Other PCA finishers were Ron & Sally Boeck (456), George & Nona Morley (939), Don Rassmusson & J. Turner (711), Allen & Dolores Weddle (818), Kirk & Linda Bradford (825), Jim & Sheila McDade (821), John & Arleen Pluth (1055), Jack & Christine Summerville, John & Tina Murphy (1085), Jim McMahon & Joyce Low (1231), Steven & Karen Taggart (2002), and Gale Schuck & Linda Carnes (2017). 10 Years Ago (September 1997) The September 7 Charity Picnic/Auction at Tom and Brenda Solter’s home on Horseshoe Bar Road was chaired by Jose Uranga and also featured a “blind” wine tasting contest with Tom and Tambra Kroetz in charge. The day’s activities raised $1,800

for the charity recipient, Mustard Seed School, which provided clothing, immunizations, and education for homeless children of Sacramento. Randy Vidmar served as auctioneer. Allen Weddle, Dolores Weddle, and Shelagh Matthews all tied in getting the best wine tasting contest answers and each won a bottle of wine. Others helping in the event were Jan and Herb Hoover, Gerry and Tally Wade, and Don and Charlene Huist. Yosemite Region held the September 21st Zone 7 Concours and Champagne Brunch at the Wine & Roses Country Hotel and Restaurant near Lodi, and once again Phil Lawrence was a winner in 911 Wash and Shine class with 198.75 points. Other SVR members scoring well in this class were Tim Fleming (second with 197.25 points), Hank Woods (third with 196.25 points), and Robert Hoy (sixth with 191.50 points). The September 27/28 Carrera de Sierra, Zone 7 rally, chaired by Rik Larson, followed the two-day format of old, except the overnight destination was Downieville, not Yosemite Park. Fortyfour people participated in the rally and tour. In the rally, with a score of 124 points, Jeff and Kim Kinder won the Beginner class with Rich McGlumphy and Karen Goffin in second with 163 (less is better in rallies). Kirk and Linda Bradford scored 118 for second place in Novice class. Richard Wetzel and Bill Jonesi with 66 points took the win in Expert Unequipped class edging Ron and Sally Boeck in second. In the Expert Equipped class, John Clever and Susie George took first in class and first overall with a score of 24 points. Following closely behind in second were Helen Ashuckian and J. Toney with 51 points. No word on the rally workers; maybe it was all DITYs.

Sunday, September 16 Starting at Sacramento County Laboratory of Forensic Services 4800 Broadway, Sacramento 95820 This rally is more like a scavenger hunt. Time is a minimal factor, but in if a tiebreaker is necessary, distance may become one. Each rally team will be given the same list of items to photograph in any order, and with liberal interpretation of what the item means. The team vehicle and one team member must appear in each photo on the items on the list. (Note: PCA insurance rules for rally require two persons per car) Schedule 2:30 P.M. - Pick up rules and instructions 3:00 P.M. - Shotgun start 6:00 - End at Sacramento Garden & Arts Center Parking Lot in McKinley Park. The BS tour by Randy Vidmar

his story is about the first-ever BS Wine Tour, a wonderfully unusual Porsche tour on June 24 th put together by Barbie and Sheila, hence the title. The ladies publicized this tour very well. I know because I signed up for it five times! That’s how much I wanted to go. Believe me I, and I’m sure I speak for everyone, we had a wonderful and unforgettable time. Everyone arrived on time in Rocklin at 8:30 A.M. There were about twenty-five cars, and we left promptly at 9:00 A.M. The first thing I noticed was that Jim McDade was not leading. He told me this tour was planned, and test-driven no less than three times by Barbie and Sheila. Jim brought up the rear as the sweep car. Barbie and Sheila were in the lead in Barbie’s beautiful Carrera 4S. There were Porsches of every year and color - a truly beautiful sight. A couple of new members were on their first tour. After the drivers safety meeting, we took off, following the directions - or so we thought. (Do I see a possible Dummkopf award coming?) Fortunately for us, Barbie and Sheila didn’t follow their own directions! We left Rocklin and headed west, making a right turn instead of a left. Now I know why Barbie and Sheila tested the route three times. I’ve lived in Sacramento for thirty-two years and have never been on some of these roads. Barbie and Sheila are true Porsche people because every road was smooth, with minimum traffic, and fun to drive. The potty stop was well planned and, according to some of the attendees, very timely. In fact, during this whole tour we only spent five miles on a freeway (I-5) making this is a “Porsche tour” in the truest sense of the phrase. Avoiding freeways around here is really hard to do in order to drive to anyplace, but Barbie and Sheila figured out how to do it, and there were plenty opportunities to stretch the “legs” of our Porsches. It must be noted that this was not a “fast” tour; in fact, speeds were just right. We toured through downtown Napa to our first destination, the Chateau Potelle Winery, nestled in the Coast Range on the west side of Napa and having one of the most beautiful views facing east toward Napa. Barbie and Sheila had reserved the awning-covered deck overlooking the valley for us to eat our picnic lunches. The ladies had the winery staff provide a sixbottle tasting of their finest wines. It doesn’t get any better than this - driving our Porsches, having good food, being with good friends, and tasting good wine. After lunch we toured deeper into the hills. The weather was beautiful and sunny, and the roads were smooth. Cabriolet tops were down, and coupe sunroofs were open. At Mumm Napa, which has ample parking space, Barbie and Sheila had set up a special tour - not your average tour, but one conducted by Mumm’s business manager. Halfway through the tour we were treated to a chilled glass of fine Mumm sparkling wine. It was a truly an exceptional tour, very well executed, and exclusively for us. It turns out there was a dubious award for my signing up for this tour on five different occasions. I almost goofed things up for Barbie and Sheila because they had to recount the numbers four

times to get an accurate count for the wineries and the restaurant. Oops. We spent a lot of time in the gift shop. Maureen spent a lot of time and some money, and we left late for the next stop. I was following a silver 911 and two other cars were following me. Assuming the 911 was on the tour, I followed it when it made a turn the others following. The driver of the 911 stopped and told me he had left the tour and was heading home. Oops again. Shows to go - one should stay with the group. I got back on track, and spotted Bill Keegan’s red Turbo turning off the road. Aha, I now had the next stop in sight, albeit a little late.

Our last stop was the Frank Family Winery where we had a private tasting - the sort of thing that makes one feel special. It turns out the winery owner had been involved with MGM during Marilyn Monroe’s time. The tasting room was filled with old photos and memorabilia of her. It seems she routinely visited this small and intimate winery, which is easy to miss, but well worth the stop. Dinner was at Brix in Yountville. This is an upscale restaurant and, as do most restaurants at this level, requires a deposit of $200 and $75 a plate to reserve a private room. Barbie and Sheila worked their magic to get us in for only the cost of each person’s meal - no easy feat because most restaurants won’t make such an accomodation. I don’t know how they did it, but I offer my personal thanks. The full menu was made available to us and the quality of the food was superb. I’ve been touring with SVR for twenty-two years now, and this tour was truly exceptional. It was planned, run, tested and managed in the finest tradition of SVR. I want to thank Barbie and Sheila and Jim, (after all he brought up the rear, also in a fine tradition), for a truly outstanding and memorable tour. It is the untiring and dedicated efforts of members like Barbie, Sheila and Jim that make such events available to our members. All one has to do is show up and have fun. Thanks again for your efforts in putting this tour together. If there is another one with your names on it, count me in.

Zone 7 rules at Parade 2007

his years Parade report begins with the bad news: the Zone 7 team failed to repeat its performance in winning the Zone Challenge crown as it did at Portland in 2006. Our team had fun making the Neillo Porsche Dealership sand castle, competing in the tug of war, and participating in the Frisbee contest, but our efforts were not sufficient. Still, as good Porsche friends, we had a good time. Now for the really good news: there were three major wins by Zone 7 members. Dave Darling of Loma Prieta Region had the top score in the Porsche Design Technical and Historical Quiz, the team of J. and Jessica Toney (Sacramento Valley Region) were the overall winners of the Yokohama Tire TSD Rally, and Stephan Nieslony (Sacramento Valley Region) had TTOD (top time of day) in the Michelin Autocross. Since San Diego was the first-ever five-day Parade, finding a time for the traditional Zone 7 party was a challenge, given the constraints imposed by the week’s abbreviated schedule. Thanks to Ted and Ingrid French and my wife KC, we arranged to have a Mexican Fiesta on the Saturday afternoon before the formal start of Parade. Nearly all of the Zone 7 members who arrived in San Diego early were able to attend. It was an impressive gathering, and it took place on the lawn in front of PCA President Prescott Kelly’s hotel room.

At the Porsche AG/PCNA Concours d’Elegance on Monday, many Zone 7 Members subjected their cars to rigorous inspection by the National PCA concours judges. In the Performance Touring group, Paul Seidel-Smith and Nancy Bishop (LPR) won their class with their stunning 914-6GT Jagermeister racecar. In the Preservation group, Paul Scheffel (MBR) won with his 1973 911T. In the battle of almost-perfect cars, Grover (Joe) Hartman (GGR), with his 1974 911 Carrera won over Ed and Jon Dugan of LPR, who were (unfortunately) forced to move up a class. Joe also won his division. Long-time Zone 7 top competitors Rick Berberich (GGR) and Ken Rinehart took second in class with their 1968 911L. Rich and Cindy Wyett (SNR) enhanced their enjoyment of their first-ever Parade by easily walking away with a first-place trophy in the Preparation/Touring class with Cindy’s 996. (Cindy also autocrossed 10

her car at the Grudge Autocross held on the day following close of Parade.) Yan Feng and Frank Noock from Redwood Region entered a great-looking Boxster in the Preparation/Full group and took home class honors. Yosemite Region President Paul Czopek took 1st place in Class Preparation/Touring 13 with his 1997 Boxster. Tuesday was the day for all the rallyists to do their thing. KC and I had fun on the gimmick rally while the more serious members of our group participated in the TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rally. J. and Jessica Toney (SVR) easily outdistanced the field in the Equipped Class with a total score of 59 (a total error of just over thirty-five seconds) for all six legs. Not only were they first in class, they were first overall for the rally. Joe and Claudia Budro from Diablo Region came in fourth in that class. In the Navigational Class, David Bunch (Redwood) and Sharon Neidel (Golden Gate) took home 11th place. Jim and Rhonda Ronin (Yosemite) took home 17th, and Sue Kemper and Cameron Warren (SNR) took the 20th spot. In the UnequippedPlus Class, the team of Larry and Greg Adams (GGR) took home 3rd spot, closely followed by Dave and Betty Pollack (GGR) in 5th place. Long-time SVR members Tom Sisson and Darlene Byerley placed 9th. All-time Zone 7 Favorites Bud and Mary Ann Behrens, who won this class at the 2004 Parade but failed to read the general instructions closely, took home modest 22nd place honors. Top-notch CPA and Golden Gate region member Olen Creech and his son James got an honorable mention with a 29th place finish. The Unequipped Class seemed to be the class most of the Zone 7 members entered. At the top of the Zone 7 pile were Barry and Suzette Pangrle (LPR) in 3rd place, followed closely by Mike and Emily Willis (SVR) and Tim and Ryan Fleming (SVR) in 6th and 7th spots respectively. Richard Wetzel and Delores McKinnon (SVR) earned 20th place, with autocrossers Chris Hamilton and Andrew Blyholder (GGR) trying to not be greedy by taking home 24th spot. San Diego Region members took their autocross expertise to a new level. The course walk on Tuesday afternoon seemed to take hours to complete. I walked the course two times, and it took me a total of an hour and a half to complete it. The course was about 1.25 miles in length and contained uphill, downhill, banked, and off-camber turns that few other sites in the country could allow for. It seemed to me that some of the Zone 8 folks were exhibiting a certain cockiness during the course walk. Since they autocross at this venue year around, maybe they thought their familiarity with the terrain would give them the upper hand. The cars from Zone 8 were very sweet looking; most of them had all the latest and best equipment. And maybe they thought they would show the country how to put on and how to drive a great autocross, which they did. However, the results, as far as the driving aspect was concerned, proved differently. With all of the big names driving the big-time 6-cylinder cars and trying their best, they couldn’t keep up with the smallest car in the Modified Class field. Steve Nieslony (SVR) in the drifter

To these and to all the rest of the Zone 7 drivers who participated in the Parade autocross: GOOD JOB! We all were a part of a very special day for Zone 7. A large number of Zone 7 members entered the Art Show competition, and many of them won awards. Second place in the Amateur Photo Class was GGR’s own Gerry Brown. In the Crafts Class (pun intended) first was taken home by Nancy Bishop and Paul Seidel Smith (LPR), and third was brought home by Past National PCA President Burt Propp (GGR). In Fiber Art Amateur Division, Shirley Neidel took home second place. In Fiber Art Pro Division, Linda Schmidt once again took home first place with a beautiful quilt. The Painting or Drawing Class Amateur was won by Emily Hoover of LPR. Burt Propp is multi-talented and took home first place in the Jewelry Division. Hunter (tie-dye) Sease took home second place in the Children’s Class with his great drawing of a red 917K. Not to be left out, lifetime GGR member Jean Ohl won second prize for her photo of Turbo the dog. To prove our zone has not only many talented rallyists, autocrossers, concours preparers, and artists, we had many trophy-winning efforts in the Tech and History Quiz. In the 356 Men’s Class, Kim Nelson (SVR) took home 7th place with his score of 27 points, strongly holding off Rik Larson (SVR), who had a score of 19 to take the 13th spot. The 356 Ladies Class saw a brave Rachel Johnson (SVR) score 15 points to take home 5th spot. Early 911 Men’s Class is always the most popular class at each Parade. Sequoia Region’s Kevin Molineaux took home a welldeserved second place with his score of 38 points. Your humble Zone rep took home 4th with a score of 36 points and was the highest-scoring Zone Rep. Grover (Joe) Hartman (GGR) took home 7th spot with a score of 35 points. Terry Zaccone had a score of 32 points and was in 12th spot. James Hurson from Redwood region scored 30 points, which placed him 16th. The ladies side of the Early 911 Class was well represented by Judy Zaccone (GGR), who scored 22 points to take home third place. Judy was closely followed by rallyist Jessica Toney (SVR) who took home 6th spot with her score of 20 points. Redwood Region President Kurt Fischer wanted to prove his Porsche IQ and entered the Mid-911 Men’s Class. His score of 27 points placed him 10th spot in his class. perseverance and scored 22 points to take ZONE home 21st spot. As Past Zone 7 Rep and current Zone 11 Rep, Tim Fleming had much to prove to everyone, and didn’t disappoint with a first-place showing in the Late 911 Class. He scored 33 points and picked the right class to get a great trophy. David Bunch tried to look over Tim’s shoulder but was too far away and scored 28 points to take home 7th spot. Michael Tracy (SVR) rounded out this field with a score of 22 points to take home 13th spot. The 996/997 Boxster class was well represented with Greg Reschke (GGR) scoring 33 points to win 4th spot. He was just ahead of Past National President Tom Bobbitt in 5th spot. GGR’s Vice President Bob Murillo had 28 points to take home 9th position. And somehow Bob found a way to wake up his son Raphael to take a test on his vacation. Raphael scored a 19th spot with his score of 18 points. If you have a Porsche trivia question you need answered, just turn to Dave Darling of LPR who not only won the 914 Men’s Class, but also had the highest score overall with fortyone correct answers. Tom Provasi was in 6th spot with his score of 30 points. Rob Neidel of Redwood scored 29 points to take home 9th position. Tom Sisson (SVR) and Gene Gilpin (Sequoia) scored 22 and 18 points respectively. In the 924/944/968 Men’s Class, three members of Zone 7 entered. Miles Smith took home 7th (24 points), Barry Pangrle (LPR) took 5th (25 points), and Alfred Abken took 2nd place (31 points). Waterpumper Women’s class saw Sharon Neidel (Redwood Region) prove how much she knows with her score of 25 points to win her class. Suzette Pangrle (LPR) was right on her heels in second place with a score of 22 correct answers. The last class to be represented, but not the least, was the Cayenne Class. On the men’s side, Mike Lommatzsch (LPR) won with a score of 28 points, and his cousin Debbie Lindley placed 2nd with a score of 13 points I want to give a special recognition to SVR member Bud Behrens (Past Zone 7 Rep and Past National Safety chairman) who took home a third place trophy in Class IV of the PCA National Newsletter Contest for his accomplishments as editor of The Drifter for the last ten months. It was the only Zone 7 newsletter entered in the contest to win a trophy this year. It has only been a few days since KC and I have returned from San Diego, and I am still smiling. How much fun it was to spend five days in San Diego with the special group of people in Zone 7. Many best wishes to all of Zone 7 members who went to Parade in San Diego and let the country know “Its not just the cars, it’s the people.” Till our next meeting, have a safe journey.

ifty-five Porsches, 110 people, and a Porsche collection we could only wish for. I am talking about the Child’s garage tour that was on July 14, 2007. It was a sold-out event, with almost every kind of Porsche you could think of from 356 to 997 and every model in between present. The weather was a special order from the Porsche gods, who smiles upon us once again, provided fantastic food and swimming in an unbelievable two-level pool. But, of course, it was the people who attended and helped put on this great event that mattered the most. There were four separate driving tours that led up to Stephen and Vicky Child’s home in Placerville and self-led tours of the home’s three garages, each filled with Porsches.

Lunch was tri-tip, macaroni salad, chips, cookies and ice cream for dessert. Huge thanks to Stephen and Vicki Childs for letting us take over again this year. Thanks to Rich Swenson, Judy Hanna and Kim Nelson for all their hard work in creating such a successfully fun day. Also, thanks to the tour leaders who did a fantastic job in getting everyone there, and to Mike Willis for his assistance with the barbeque. With such great people as we have in our club it is not a wonder why our club events are successful. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

Mendocino 2007 Tour - November 2nd through 4th by Rik Larson

s of August 1st thirty-five cars have signed up for this 3-day tour in November. So why such a big push to let people know about an event that is two months away? Because we need to secure the rooms with deposits at the three primary inns we have booked. The 2006 Mendocino tour had more than fifty cars plus another ten cars from Redwood Region. Reservations for one-night stays on the coast are difficult. Contact Rik Larson for additional information (see below). We have a block of rooms at the Hill House and the MacCallum House in Mendocino, and at the Little River Inn in Little River. The Hill House block is being coordinated by Tom and Tambra Kroetz (916.989.1984). The MacCallum House block is being coordinated by Frederick D. Rauch (916.989.3199). The Little River Inn block is being handled by Rik and Lettie Larson (916.481.6084). Contact the coordinators for additional information about the types of rooms remaining, deposits required, cancellation costs, etc. A deposit is required to hold a room at all locations. Cancellation policies are strictly enforced. If you want to stay an extra day or two, either before or after the group, we will try to make it happen. But we must know NOW if you have plans to stay extra days. It is easier to reserve the rooms for longer periods (and then release the days if you don’t want them) than it is to add days to your stay.

This is a very informal tour, with the only semi-competitive event being a kite-flying contest on Saturday afternoon. Golf (miniature and real), tennis, horseback riding, beach walking, kayaking, etc. are all available on the north coast. We can provide many suggestions as to the area restaurants, wineries, points of interest, etc.

New members G24 event at the Towe Auto Museum Saturday, September 8th - 10:00 A.M.

This will be our third G24 of the year and they just keep getting better. On Saturday, September 8th starting at 10:00 A.M. we’ll be gathering at the Towe Auto Museum for a couple of informative and fun-filled hours that will include getting to know one another better and learning more about our favorite cars – Porsches, including docent-led tours through the museum. One of the great things about the Towe is that the display of cars is constantly rotated, so every time you visit the museum you are seeing something new and different. And just in case you didn’t know, SVR is a supporter of the Towe Auto Museum and all of our members are entitled to free admission. All you have to do is show your PCA membership card. August 1, 2007 SVR board meeting by Kevin Dougherty, SVR Secretary

resident Mike Willis called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. In attendance were: Rik Larson, Cookie Anderson, Kevin Dougherty, Matt Deter, Helen Ashuckian, Jeff and Kim Kinder, Kern Breaux, Frederick Rauch, Mike Willis, and Ray and Betty Silva. The July minutes were previously reviewed and then accepted at the meeting. Pre-Event Approvals • Photo Rally - approved; Carrera de Sierra – approved; McMahan Tour/Dinner – approved; Mendocino Tour – approved; First Aid/CPR Class – approved; DE Budgets – approved. New Business • Drifter Analysis: Mike gave the board an analysis of The Drifter. A discussion ensued over the cost of a printed Drifter sent to members each month versus an electronic copy. Board members were asked to send Mike their opinions on how a letter explaining printed versus electronic to the membership should be written. It was also decided to try a “copy” Drifter as opposed to an “offset” Drifter as we have done for years. The savings to the club would be around $300 a month, and we will see how the quality compares. Old Business • Roster: Elliot sent a review copy to Rik on July 21st. Rik sent updates for board member changes. Xerox printing is expected to be completed in the next few days. Rik will ask Elliot to document the process he uses to create the roster. • Delinquent Ads: These were reviewed; the four advertisers who haven’t paid will not have ads in the September Drifter. Board Member Reports • Competition (Matt Deter): 38 drivers attended the July 21st autocross at Infineon Raceway. The next autocross event is on September 15th in Stockton. • Driver Education (Frederick Rauch): The schedule for the entire year was reviewed during the budget approval process. Mike reminded Frederick about the new PCA rules and Mike was assured that they were in compliance. • Drifter (Bud Behrens): Highlights: There is list of advertisers (18) and a request for those past due for deletion. • Financial Report (Betty Silva): The club continues to be in good financial shape. • Membership Director (Rik Larson): Highlights: We gained eight new members in July, bringing our total to 629. The next new member tour is on October 13th. • Social (Cookie Anderson): Reviewed upcoming social events, including the First Aid/CPR Classes scheduled for October 13th and 14th. There is a minimum of 15 people who must be registered before the class can be held. • Rally (Helen Ashuckian): Sent Ann Hamel budget forms for the Photo Rally, the forms to be forwarded to Betty Silva; will be sending Ann the release forms next week.

• G24 (Mike for Kim & Rachel): The next G24 meeting will take place on September 8th at the Towe Museum. • Goodie Store (Tom Sisson): No sales during this period. • Webmaster (John Murphy): Stuck in Miami, or so he says. • Vice President (Kern Breaux): Kern reviewed the calendar of upcoming events. • Past President (Jeff Kinder): The Nomination Committee consists of Jeff, Kim Nelson, and Rachel Johnson. A tour or a rally: the 30th running of Carrera de Sierra

he 30th running of Carrera de Sierra is scheduled for the weekend of September 22-23. This traditional two-day time and distance rally to the Sierra Nevada can also be run as a tour. The overnight stay this year is in Truckee. We are pleased to announce that Steve and Barbara McCrory will be our tourmasters this year (for those of you not wanting to participate in the rally but have all the fun with the group). We will start at Niello Porsche on Saturday morning; coffee and donuts will be available. The rally is part of the 2007 Zone 7 Rally Series and draws contestants from many of the regions in Zone 7. The event is open to all types of cars, not just Porsches, This event includes the rally or the tour, each of which includes a Saturday afternoon social gathering after the day’s run and a barbecue at the finish in Loomis on Sunday. You are responsible for overnight accommodations in the Truckee area (see the flyer on the SVR web site for details). Start for both the rally and the tour is from Niello Porsche in Rocklin. This year’s rallymaster is Richard Wetzel. We also expect to see the return of Goose’s Walking Rally at the social on Saturday afternoon. Preregistration is highly recommended.
