Chilli’s chatter by Mike Willis

A

s I write this, we are planning our trip to Parade. This will be a double pleasure because Emily and I will be able to enjoy Parade with each other and with friends the Porsche community we have made over the years in. During the week we will be also be able to spend some time with Michelle, who lives in LaJolla and knows the neat places to go in and around the area. She is included in our registration so she can join us for the dinners and some of the other activities that don’t conflict with her work schedule. I would like to devote the rest of this month’s article to the “Fine Art of Touring”. Our tours are intended to enhance the enjoyment of our Porsches and to be with others who also enjoy the cars. But that is really not all touring is about. It is really about being with friends and making new friends. Touring with the club is the best way for our newer members to join in the fun and get involved in the club The tour portion is just that: a tour, not a race to see who will lead the pack. Touring is, by its very nature, a disciplined group of cars driving through the countryside and enjoying the scenery, the roads, and the stops along the way. It is important to not draw undue attention to the group. In order not to draw attention, we do NOT pass over double yellow lines, cut in and out of traffic, causing the “locals” or other motorists aware of us unfavorably. Sometimes these folks will use their cell phones to let “others” know where we are and how we are behaving. Use caution in passing. Passing just to get to the front of the tour group results in overall slowing of the group. (Besides, being in the back of the pack is really the fastest place to be, and you can see all the Porsches as we tour along.) On all tours it is important that you keep the car in front of and behind you in sight. This is especially important when turns at intersections are made. If you do not keep the car in front of you in sight, you will not know that the tour has made a turn, and off you go into never-never land. If everyone always keeps the car behind in sight and waits at turns, one will never get lost. (Well, this is partially true because tour leaders have been known to make a U-turn or two on a tour. But at least everyone is still together.) Tour leaders try hard to keep the tour group together lead it to interesting places. The number of good Porsche roads we have been able to find over the years is amazing. And each year some new ones are found. On the Murphys tour some good roads were found and the touring was excellent; it even felt like were experiencing “deliverance”. At the start of each tour there is a meeting of drivers and passengers to go over some of the essentials. Always attend the meetings and pay attention because sometimes things may have changed from the printed instructions for the event, perhaps due to road construction, weather conditions, or a variety of other things. The real bottom line is to have fun, enjoy the Porsche, and especially, enjoy each other. Make it a point to meet someone new and share your experiences with him or her. It should be fun, and if it isn’t, why are we doing it?

Share-the-wealth

by Herb Hoover, STW Czar

S

everal people have suggested that I explain STW, especially since we have some new members who joined while STW was on vacation. Pat and Larry Wilson founded Share-the-Wealth thirty or thirty-five years ago to fund our newsletter, the Drifter, which at that time comprised just a few pages of announcements of club activities. Over the years the Drifter developed into a prize-winning publication with its own budget and no longer dependent upon STW. However, STW continued because the membership thought it was fun, and it did produce small revenue for the club. A couple years ago the Board decided to end STW, and it remained dormant for a year or two. I missed it; thought it was fun, and so, started to nag Jeff Kinder, our president, to reinstate it as a regular dinner meeting function. Jeff finally got tired of my needling and said, “O.K., we’ll reinstate it if you will do it.” What could I say but, “sure?” So, here we are. Share-the-Wealth is once again a regular part of our dinner meetings.

Here’s how STW works. Members bring prizes, which we raffle off at dinner meetings. Bring anything. Porsche-related is best, but any car-related items, or anything else, for that matter is good. I still miss Phil Lawrence’s brown-bag prizes, which could be anything as esoteric as a bottle of Ripple. Tambra Kroetz always brings artistic, hand made items, such as plants, flower arrangements, ceramics; you name it. People bring baskets of homegrown veggies or fruit; we have brought a basket of Meyer lemons on occasion. Marie Smith has brought her famous brownies. You get the idea. Even a bottle of your favorite wine works for me and Porsche posters are always a good bet. We sell tickets for $1 apiece, eight for $5. You get extra tickets if you wear your nametag and extras if you bring a gift. The profit goes to special things that are not usually budgeted, such as door prizes for the Christmas party, prizes for the Towe Museum’s holiday tree-trimming party and potluck in which SVR always participates. I look at STW as a fun activity, which incidentally earns a small income for the club. The primary purpose of our club, in my opinion, is to have fun. People with a common interest, that is Porsches, get together to have a good time. No big causes; we all have those in other environments. This Club is a fun club. Lets keep it that way.

Drifting back August 2007 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (August 1977) On August 7, SVR held its second SVSCC Championship Autocross at Cal-Expo with Dave Neukom and Rich Burke as co-chairs. Entry was $4.00, or $7.00 per couple. Early-bird setup crew included Paul Baldarelli, Paul Bates, Ted Colbert, Rich Farlinger, Jim Karver, Jack Samples, Larry Wilson, Mike Willis, and John Wong. Other workers were Gail Burke, Bill Yee, Darrell Butner, Rik Larson, Ron Tom, Bev Bayless, Diane Colbert, Vicki Willis, Fred Myeron, Laurie Adams, June Samples, the Overstreets, Scott McKay, Kathy King, C.C. Craig, Al Henderson, and Dave Marek. Top-three SVR drivers included Dave Neukom (2nd A Stock), Ted Colbert (1st B Stock), Kirk Bradford (2nd B Stock), Dale Newhouse (3rd B Stock), Mike Willis (2nd C Stock), Larry Wilson (1st D Stock), Kerry Creasy (2nd D Stock), Paul Baldarelli (3rd D Stock), Vicki Willis (1st K Stock), Diane Colbert (1st L Stock), Pat Wilson (1st M Stock), Jim Bonney (3rd C Modified), Darrel Overstreet (2nd B Prodified), and Sheila McDade (3rd I Prodified). The August 14 Picnic and Charity Auction in William Land Park had on the agenda a picnic and charity auction, but for many the premier event was the 356ers versus 911/912/924 owners volleyball game. After a futile struggle, 911/912/924 owners went down for the count leaving the 356ers (more athletic with prettier women and cars) victorious, once again. The auction, with Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson as auctioneers, brought in $1,000 for the club’s charity. Some of the big-ticket auction items were Betty Fielding’s 911 Tiffany window, pen and ink drawings by Dave Marek, a ladies watch donated by Strutz Jewelers (Ted Strutz) and Lettie Larson’s hand-made afghan.

20 Years Ago (August 1987) Stan Breyfogle was the chairman for the August 2nd Hare ‘n’ Hound rally, and it was a HOT event (the temperature was 108 degrees by 11:30 A.M.). Eleven rally cars took the green flag, as it were, out of the Beverly Garland parking lot looking for the first “P” marked on the pavement. Then they had to guess whether to turn right or left, or proceed straight ahead. A correct choice was indicated by an arrow painted on the pavement within .2 mile of the intersection. Some of those with mechanical odometers discovered they could unwind the odo, in case of a poor guess, by backing up which brought out the locals to stare and wonder. The first car to finish completed the 25.1-mile course in 11⁄2 hours which returned the field to the Beverly Garland for brunch under the supervision of Fillmore Crank, SVR member and hotel manager. John Clever won the electronic odo class, and Allen and Dolores Weddle (with help from their daughter, Donna Picard) won the mechanical odo class after bird-dogging Mark and Starla Hirst much of the day. “Let’s do it for the kids,” was the motto for the August 16 SVR Charity Auction and Picnic at the home of Barbara Rodriques and Bruce Mills, chaired by Jack and June Samples. At the end of the day, SVR auction bidders raised $2,020 for the Sierra Mountain Special Olympics. The Anheuser-Busch Company played a major part this year by donating T-shirts, sweatshirts,

7

ice chests, beer mugs, posters and a nifty Michelob leather golf bag (C.C. Craig and Fred Siegner fought over this item). Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson once again served as auctioneers. Jim McDade swallowed the hook, line, and sinker by spending major money for the “Trust Me, It’s The Very Last” Steve McQueen Le Mans poster. The SVR Executive Board donated a CRAB 17 entry, and other terrific auction items were donated by Niello Porsche, Bridgestone Tires, Elise and Chris McIntire, Chinois East-West, Red Lion Hotel, Iron Horse, Hobby House, and Marie and Marv Smith. The Historical Car Races Tour to Laguna Seca, August 2123, got off to a rocky start on Friday when Jerry and Toni Moore’s 911 burst into flames just before the group got to Hollister. Tour leader, Herb Hoover, whipped out his trusty fire extinguisher and got the flames out quickly with no exterior damage. But, some electrical wire insulation was melted as were some of the rubber lines. Fortunately, Bill and Judith Woodson-Blake had their cell phone handy, called for a tow, and eventually all reached Monterey. The races on Saturday were anticlimactic. Saturday night dinner at the Tinnery at Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove was followed the next morning by brunch at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, and then the Sunday afternoon Concours at Pebble Beach wrapped up the weekend.

8

10 Years Ago (August 1997) Phil Lawrence led the charge of four SVR entrants in the August 3rd Zone 7 Concours at Carlsen Porsche put on by Golden Gate Region. Phil finished first (198.25 points) in the 911 Wash ‘n’ Shine class, very closely followed in 2nd place by SVR-member Hank Woods (197.75 points). Ray Alamares finished 3rd in the 356 Street class, and Mark Smedley finished 3rd in the 356 Full class. Rich McGlumphy chaired the August 7th dinner meeting at Tea Cup Cafe, located near the Sacramento Bee building and famed for being about the size of a teacup, yet easily handling a fair-sized crowd. A traditional, one-size-fits-all, Chinese menu pleased all. The older members of the group remembered when the Tea Cup was even smaller and located across from the CalWest Life Insurance building on L Street (not the previous CalWest location on J Street across from Spit-and-Argue Park). On August 24, Bob Peake and Donna Falk took SVR members in nine tour cars to the Kautz Ironstone Vineyards, just outside of Murphys in Calaveras County, and toured through their “7-story entertainment complex dedicated to quality and gracious hospitality,” which included the winery, caves, a museum (with a 44-pound gold nugget), conference center, gardens, pipe organ from the Alhambra Theater in Sacramento, and amphitheater. As a special touch, Bob and Donna arranged for a different hors d’oeuvre with each of the seven wines that were sampled.

The 2007 San Simeon tour by Ray and Sherry Lancaster

Summer Solstice rally review by Helen Ashuckian, SVR Rally Chairperson

W

e are relatively new to the club and this was only our second tour, so we were looking forward to this trip and the opportunity to meet more of the members. The tour started from South Sacramento, and after a departure briefing by Mike and Emily Willis (our hosts), twenty-three cars headed down I-5. We stopped briefly at the Westley rest area for potty break and to meet up with two other cars. Then we were off to Hollister for the lunch break. Mike had selected a good park with covered tables and all the necessary facilities. Before heading out to Paso Robles, Mike briefed us that this would be the “Porsche part” of the trip and that we would split into two smaller groups: the first group for those desiring to drive a little faster down Highway 25 past the Pinnacles National Monument, and the second for those less inclined. He made a point of cautioning us to watch for the kamikaze squirrels that appear from nowhere to test our reaction times, and advised us to consider in advance the expense of a crashed car vs. taking on the critters at full tilt. Armed with that vision, we were off again. The two groups rejoined for the twisty Peach Tree Road and Indian Valley Road, then down US101 with a stop at Michella Winery where we were greeted by friendly the staff and nice discounts. From there it was off to our motels in San Simeon. All of the roads were very good and everyone arrived without incident. When we checked in there were complementary car cleaning towels placed for us in our room. Nice touch. To celebrate the day we met at the Courtesy Inn for refreshments, relaxation, and good conversation before dinner. I ranked the day at four stars, since over six hours were spent driving. Mike had planned a “no-plan” day Saturday so we could each choose how to spend our time. Some went to Morro Bay or further south, others to area wineries, and so forth. Sherry decided to test the shops in Cambria and was happy to report that they passed with full marks. The Cavalier Inn put on a very nice, well-organized dinner in their banquet room, and we had an opportunity to give well-earned recognition to the tour organizers and others. After dinner some of the group headed for the Sundown Tour of Hearst Castle. Sherry and I opted for a short run up the coast past Ragged Point Inn to get a few sundown pictures at elevation. All in all, it was another excellent day. Sunday morning found everyone loading up for the return trip by various routes of their choice. Sherry and I decided at the last minute to join Mike, Emily and five other cars driving up CA1 to Carmel. It was a great ride, with unmatched scenery and very little traffic, which in most cases pulled over and let us through. There was one place where we encountered a traffic signal (!) where Mother Nature had claimed the roadway, reducing traffic to one lane, but otherwise the highway was clear and smooth. We really enjoyed the weekend. The Inn and its staff was first rate, we met friendly new people, and the objective of ‘having fun’ was fully satisfied. On a personal level, I find myself realizing that while on unfamiliar roads, my ability to choose the right line and speed needs a lot of work, but the car is always forgiving and never disappoints. The remedy is obvious - more tours! 10

T

he Summer Solstice rally event was a great success. The day started with approximately twenty-five people at J. Toney’s rally school in the conference room at the new Niello Porsche facility where Niello had generously provided a delicious variety of donuts and three types of coffee to keep us alert. The first session covered the fine points of TSD (TimeSpeed-Distance) rallying. After a ten-minute break, J. presented the second session, which dealt with the variety of gimmicks that can be found in a gimmick rally. At 1:00 P.M., the first of sixteen cars left the Niello parking lot on the A/B (Gimmick) rally designed by rallymaster Keith McMahan. The route started through “Bumpy” Loomis (we had to count the “bumps” we bumped over), then on to Penryn. We began to see cars coming back our way! After entering the Shirland Tract and Southridge area just south of Auburn, we met cars stopped by the side of the road (studying the directions), some coming toward us, and some crossing out path, some following us. We spent time with “Grayhorse”, “Falcons”, “Snowy Owl” and “Eagles Nest”, then on to the city of Auburn. We didn’t stay too long here before we were on the road to Foresthill, where we spent a “happy” time traveling in, out, through, around, Happy Pines and Todd Valley Estates, before reaching the Pizza Factory in Foresthill. At the end of the rally Keith handed us a Critique Sheet, which showed us all our errors. It was a great trip!

What a beautiful day for a concours by Kim Nelson and Kent Brandon photos by Mary Ann Behrens and Barbara McCrory

S

unday, June 17th was absolutely perfect: great food, rockin’ music, smokin’ deals from Niello Porsche, pictures of everyone, and, of course, Porsches and people all over the place. Throughout the day more than one hundred Porsches drove out to Niello Porsche in Rocklin either to participate in the concours (i.e., to submit their cars for judging) or just to talk with friends and check out the cars. A new twist this year was having Ira and Carol McKee take pictures of everyone who entered the concours or brought their car out for display. This was a really nice touch; you can check out the pictures on our club’s website. There was a wonderful display of twenty early Porsches in the Niello Porsche service area. Outlaws, rat-rods and beautifully-restored 356’s were all on display. Of particular interest to many was the racecar brought out by Darrell Bailey and Paul Frame. It didn’t take too much imagination to see the potential that his car has; Darrell and Paul are planning on having it completed in time for the La Carrera Panamerica this fall. Good luck guys! Once again we would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s concours such a huge success. In particular, we would like to thank Don Faerber, general manager, and Don Koepke, parts manager, of Niello Porsche. They jumped through hoops to make sure that everything was just right for this event.

Boxster owners: ever seen your engine? by Lisa Thomas, SVR Technical Chair

A

t the Niello concours I was talking to a few people, and the usual themes in Porsche talk came up, starting with, “beautiful car” and going to” how much horsepower?” Then I’m asked, “What about smog?” The Boxster owners sometimes ask, “Where is my engine?” So I promised I would do an article on how to view your motor.

1. First step, read your manual, it’s in there! Look for “Maintenance”, and then the sub-category “engine compartment.” It says, “Partially open your top,” and you wonder how much is partial. Is it OK to stop the top motor in mid position? Yes. In the manual it says “service position,” which means open the top and hold the button until the edge of the top is 10 centimeters away from the front windshield. Pull the key out of the ignition. 2. At the rear of the soft top (towards the tail), there are cables at each corner with ball and socket connectors. Pull the socket off the ball connector at each corner. (These easily push back on upon re-assembly.)

12

3. Along the trunk area there is a long plastic edge with two clips that holds the fabric of the soft-top to the body of the car. Gently pull it down and away from the clips. To re-install, roll it back up into the clips. 4. Fold the very back edge of the top (that which is closest to the trunk of the car) towards the front of the car to reveal the storage box behind the seats. There are two half-moon shaped screws on top. Unscrew them and pull the box out. If you have DSP, unhook the electrical connector. 5. Remove the carpet by unscrewing the two large screws. This reveals the engine cover with five half-moon shaped turn-handles. Turn each half way counter-clockwise to disengage. Lift out the cover, and there’s the engine. It really is that easy, and, of course; just do the opposite when putting it all back together. Also, I suggest that when you are at the smog station, just play stupid and say, “I don’t know how, don’t you?”

June 24 G24 event at Ted Blake’s Restoration by Kim Nelson and Rachel Johnson

W

e thought it might be nice to show those who really never knew, or those who just wanted to remember, where the “new cars” really came from – the 356. The place to do that was at Ted Blake’s Porsche Restoration. He is the 356 guru and a great guy to let us all come down to his shop and hang out, on a Sunday. Kim Nelson gave a brief history of the 356 with some on the spot questions for audience participation; everyone did well. Ted offered some 356 inside information: how much these cars cost and how much do they cost to restore were the questions of most interest. Some upholstery samples and technical parts were displayed for all to see, and questions were discussed at length. Nobody wanted to go home to pull weeds or paint the fence! The last area of special interest to the group was the 356 race car being built by Darrell Bailey and Paul Frame, both of whom work at Ted’s, for the La Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico in October. It is being transformed into an endurance machine for the high-stress terrain of the race. Good luck to the race team! We welcome any new members who have been in our club for 24 months or less to join us at our next event on September 8, 2007 at the Towe Auto Museum. It will be a tour of the museum to check out all the great cars and memorabilia on display. the drifter

SVR photo rally and barbecue Sunday, September 16, 2007

T

his is a new twist on the word “rally.” It is more like a scavenger hunt. Time is a minimal factor, but in case of the need for a tiebreaker, distance may become one. Each rally team will be given the same list of items to photograph in any order, and with liberal interpretation of what the item means. The team vehicle and one team member must appear in each photo on the items on the list. Schedule • Starting location to be determined 2:30 P.M. - Pick up rules and instructions 3:00 P.M. - Shotgun start 6:00 P.M.- End at McKinley Park parking lot Approximate duration of the rally is three hours Fee $20.00 per car and includes prizes and barbecue (Note: PCA insurance rules for rally require two persons per car. Mandatory Equipment Porsche vehicle with functioning odometer • Digital Camera To preregister, contact Ann Hamel at 916.736.0225 or e-mail amsquared@yahoo.com

Can you believe it’s August???

G

ood grief, it can’t be August already. Oh, but it is. The big stores are starting to show winter clothes and Macy’s has already put winter clothes on sale! Well, the GOODIE STORE is still selling cool stuff: Porsche T-shirts ($18), and SVR logo polo shirts ($30). We also have sweatshirts ($30), denim shirts ($35), fleece vests in red, black, and grey ($35) and lightweight microfiber jackets ($55). Don’t forget the car badges: SVR for $15 and PCA for $18

Warning: wearing our shirts can make members of the opposite sex chase after you! Maybe it makes them as horny as a four-horned antelope. What, you say there is no such animal? Well, I beg to differ. Yes, there is such an antelope, in India, named the four-horned antelope (not very imaginative). The creature has the usual two horns between his ears and a smaller pair just over his eyes. Notice I wrote “he” and “his”. It’s the male who has the four horns, while the female is hornless (wouldn’t you just know it?). With the male extraordinarily horny but the female not horny at all, isn’t it amazing that they ever have any little four-horns? Aren’t these ads educational? It’s enough to make you honk! Contact your friendly GOODIE STORE. See Tom Sisson at meetings and events, or contact him at 14537 Surrey Junction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685, telephone 209.296.5352 or e-mail targatom@volcano.net

The last word by Bud Behrens

T

he 2007 Porsche Parade in San Diego was a class act overall, but the high point for me was on the 4th of July when The Drifter was awarded the third-place trophy in class IV (up to 799 region members) in the PCA National Newsletter Contest. “Well, I’ll be damned.” was my immediate reaction. Up to that point I must have been suffering from lowered expectations. Although I haven’t yet received the judges’ scoring sheets and comments, I’m sure that the success of The Drifter is due in large part to the quality of the contributions from those SVR members who submitted articles and columns for publication in 2006. Thanks, folks. Expecting to do some work on this issue, I took the laptop to Parade, but the five-day format of this Parade was so jammed with activities there was very little time for extra-curricular activities – not even sight-seeing. (The consensus among this year’s attendees is that Parade should last for at least six days.) So, other than acquiring some Parade photos for the next issue, no work on The Drifter was done and I’m playing catch-up.
