Cookie’s Crumbs

by Yvonne “Cookie” Anderson, 2010 SVR President Sunday September 12th was a beautiful sunny day when the Charity Auction was held at the Folsom Zoo Pavilion. A small group of 35 people attended and we raised approximately $1900.00 to add to the amount already collected from various items auctioned off through out the year. I would like to thank Niello Porsche, Judy Hanna, Rich Swenson, Jon and Janet Kramer, Tim and Susan Fleming, Bob and Beth Jacobson, Sheila and Jim McDade, Barbie Flores, Phil Wood and Tom Sisson for donating items for the silent auction. Special thanks goes to Cindy Breaux for donating Kern’s Tommy Bahamas shirt for the auction that brought in $175.00. Again, this year Kim Kinder provided the auction with bags of homemade caramels, which were auction off, some, bringing up to $20.00 a bag. Way to go Kim, the caramels were delicious as always. I would also like to

thank everyone that attended and donated other items for the auction. Special thanks to Tambra Kroetz for doing such a great job this year and throughout the year. Please sign up early for the Christmas party space is limited. Please look for the flyer on the web or in the Drifter.

We are going to have a cold winter. How do I know that? I read some years back in the Farmers Almanac that if acorns fall off the tree during early summer that we will have a cold winter. Guess what? Drifting Back – October 2010 by Larry Wilson 30 Years Ago (October 1980) Harvey Cain chaired the October 11 Champagne Tour for 14 cars of SVR couples: Larson, Chandler, Peebles, Prinzo, Smith, King, Mason, Moore, Peters, Bruce Westrup and Lisa, Dave Simich and Kelley Byerley, Bob Peake and Jeannie, and Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger. On tap (if you will) was a visit to three of Napa Valley’s best champagne wineries. The group learned about making and serving champagne at Domaine Chandon in Yountville. They explored tunnels, built by Chinese laborers in the late 1800s, that currently store 600,000 bottles of champagne at Schramsberg in Calistoga. They combined shopping with champagne tasting at Hans Kornell in St. Helena, had lunch at the nearby St. George restaurant, and then more shopping at Vintage 1870 back in Yountville. Finally, on to Sacramento and home. Sally Weddle wrote her first rally when she produced the October 26 Big Apple rally. She also wrote the post-event story (see December issue of THE DRIFTER). As Sally tells it, the first of 25 rallycars left the start at 9:01AM heading up the valley on a four-hour

event around and past the Sacramento River and many orchards to lunch at Colusa where each person received a cold, crisp apple, thus the name of the rally. After lunch it was back down the river to Woodland and the finish. Sally said everyone easily got to the finish and were happy with their score. The workers were Jim and Joyce Karver, Mike and Vicki Willis, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Jim and Shirley Chandler, Ray and Sara Clements, Rik and Lettie Larson, and Stan Breyfogle. Her dog ate the sheet with the names of entrants and finishing positions. 20 Years Ago (October 1990) During the October 13 Wine Tour, Dennis at Hans Kornell said

Page 4

the drifter - Sacramento Valley Region - Porsche Club of America - www.derporsche.net

its tiny bubbles makes no headache. The 20-car sold-out tour made a smooth trip after Jim McMahen fixed tour leader Bob Peake’s wipers from operating every time he keyed his CB radio to announce something important. After the Kornell visit, the group moved to Vintners Village for lunch, and then on to the Napa Mumm facility (everyone liked their “tasting salon”). Then, at S. Anderson Vineyards, each tour-goer took a flute of sparkling wine with them to visit the caves dug into the hillside. The final stop was Alambic Brandy stills at RMS Vineyards with more tasting. Tour members included Marv and Marie Smith, Chris and Elyce McIntyre, and Kirk and Linda Bradford, plus a whole bunch of others. Eighty-five people turned out for the Octoberfest dinner meeting, October 18, at Sudwerk in Davis. What’s with THAT (a recentera attendance record)? A new German restaurant? Soliciting floor nominations for SVR elective offices in accordance with SVR bylaws? A guest speaker, Serge Dubuc, from Porsche AG complete with two video tapes and follow-up Q’s and A’s? The appearance of Ronie Saaki, Make-a-Wish Executive Director, to receive SVR’s 1990 charity donation? Yes. All of the above.

Was the October 27 Costume Bowling event at Country Club Lanes a typical activity for a sports car club? Well, event-chair Phil Lawrence thought so, and combined it with Halloween costumes to make the evening a real Laugh-In. Bowling with Glo-Balls in machine-created fog under the glare of strobe and laser lights and in full costume (Susan Fleming was dressed as a tooth fairy, Lauren Fleming as a witch, Ryan Fleming as Harry Potter, Phil Lawrence as a train conductor, Shelagh Matthews as Merlin the Magician, and Sharon Fehr on crutches with an arm-sling as an accident-prone “Victim”), this motley group proceeded to have a bowling contest, ultimately won by Shelagh Matthews with a score of 123 over Susan Fleming, much to the chagrin of tooth fairies everywhere..

The directions were simple, the course in Folsom was a breeze, but the puzzle was a killer and took a bit of an effort to solve. That would be the October 28 Miss Marple’s Mystery Rally by Sally Boeck and Karen Mangin. It was a huge riddle with clues to help find the riddle’s answers. When the smoke cleared, Mark Hirst did the best job of, “Riddle me this, Starla,” and so they won the event. Their prize was three Miss Marple’s mystery books. Wow! Placing second through ninth, winning no books, were Hans Engle and Cindy Sweeney, Mike and Vicki Willis plus Michelle, Gary and Kathleen Pitts, Suzanne Gallicho and Jim McMahen, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Bob and Gail Bitters, John and Thor Anderson plus Sharon Levinsky, and LAST, depressed, and sick of Miss Marple, Pat and Larry Wilson. 10 Years Ago (October 2000) With Deb and Dan Catherwood at the helm, the October 1 Charity Auction was once again a great success raising over $2,700 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. At the end, auctioneers Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson and all the generous SVR members in attendance continued fierce bidding on the few remaining items even though the supply of beer was EXHAUSTED. Thanks to Dennis Stettner for finding a location with plenty of shade, to Kent Brandon for organizing the concours as a great companion event, and to Sally Boeck who recorded all purchases on her laptop. Dan Catherwood recognized Tom Sisson for creating “the best SOP binder (on charity auction arrangements) I’ve ever seen.” And, Dan’s seen plenty! The October 7 autocross ended the SVR 2000 season with 30 drivers in full combat at Mather Field. Steve Nieslony easily won Top Time of Day with Tim Fleming and Glen Brooksby second and third fastest. Fourth through seventh were Bill Thorp, Russ Hildebrand, Ron Kain, and Tim Howard. Fastest woman was Kathy Smalley, and fastest stock driver was Edward Shih with Ross Butler and Nicholas Hromyak in hot pursuit.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, before good roads and reliable autos, San Franciscans traveling to Sacramento, Marysville and Chico rode inter-urban electric trains, or trolleys. Ranging from Spartan to luxurious, all paused at Rio Vista Junction, just east of Travis AFB, to pick up and discharge passengers. Rio Vista Junction depot is long gone, but the superb Western Railway Museum, showcasing many of those trolleys, brings it back to life. The Western Railway Museum provides a rare opportunity to experience to travel as Californians did a hundred years ago. The museum includes over 100 trolleys and cars, miles of restored track, a car house, a restoration shop and a beautiful, new visitors’ center housing artifacts, a book/souvenir store and research library. From the Calfornia Auto Museum, we’ll wind along the Sacramento River to the smooth, winding, Porsche-friendly roads of the Montezuma Hills. The huge windmills we'll pass resemble other-worldly creatures. After arriving at the museum, you’re on your own. Pick your adventure! •

Ride an electric train through the picturesque Montezuma Hills on the original historic mainline tracks of the Sacramento Northern Interurban Railway. Coach passengers (included in the cost of admission) will travel in a car that spent its life traveling from Oakland to Chico over the same rail line you’ll be riding on. Wellpreserved, it sports plush red seats and dark wood paneling.

• Check out the 25 antique trolleys in the new 20,000 sq ft Car House. Many additional displays are located outdoors. • Picnic in tree-shaded Laflin Park on the museum grounds or at the pumpkin patch. • Take a guided tour of Car House Three at 1:15 or of Car House One at 2:45. • Enjoy a 15 minute long trolley ride around the museum grounds. Departure times: 20 and 40 minutes past the hour. • Pumpkin Patch. A treat lies a few miles down the historic tracks of the Sacramento Northern interurban mainline. Ride a trolley to the tree-shaded pumpkin patch in Gum Grove. Browse the food and gift booths, enjoy a hay ride behind a slow-moving tractor and climb the hay bale castle, a favorite of both children and adults. Bales are carefully stacked to leave kid-sized tunnels, great for exploring. Shoot small pumpkins at distant targets with a giant slingshot. • Visit the museum store and browse thru books and souvenirs for adults and children. Everybody and all vehicle types are welcome. Pop the kids into your Porsche or non-Porsche and treat them to a day they won't soon forget. Lunch: Bring a picnic. Food is also available at the museum café and usually at Gum Grove. SVR Trip fee is $5.00 or one Fun Buck per car. Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for children 14 and under, payable at the door. Coach rides are included in the price of admission. The first class parlor-observation car is $5 additional. Prep. Arrive with a full tank of gas. Radios channel 9, subchannel 6. Camera. Meet at the California Automobile Museum (formerly Towe Ford Museum) 2200 Front Street, Sacramento. Registration begins at 10:00. Drivers' meeting at 10:20 and departure at 10:30. In Search of the Perfect Prime Rib by Larry Wilson, SVR Member Photos courtesy of Babette Hatten

On August 28th, nearly 100 SVR members and friends took to the Sierra foothills in search of the perfect slab of prime rib. They came from different starting points, some in an organized tour from Sloughhouse led by Kirk and Linda Bradford aided by the trusty duo of Dave Hoffman and Susan Duvall-Serota who ran the "back door," ready to shepherd back to the fold any participant who showed the slightest tendency of wandering off-course. The tour route included Amador City, Sutter Creek, Jackson, Pine Grove, Volcano, Daffodil Hill, and Fiddletown. Other event participants took the, "We don't need no Stinkin' Tour," approach -they simply left home driving straight to the Deaver Vineyards, 12455 Steiner Rd in Plymouth, CA. "Whoa," you ask. "Go to a winery in search of the perfect prime rib?" Yup, because Ron and Bente Riley said so in their event-flyers and DRIFTER articles. They were in charge of the event and have produced outstanding eating and social events for SVR members over the years. So, if you go in search of the perfect prime rib, and Ron tells you to "Go to Deaver's," you go to Deaver's. The huge turn-out underscored the validity of that advice.

cast-iron pots over the fire. We had fresh corn from Sloughhouse and Ron prepared his special sour dough biscuits. Caesar Salad with cranberries, candied walnuts, and feta cheese was also served. For dessert, we had fresh fried pies of apple, berry, and peach prepared by Bente Riley. We served over 100 meals that night. If you were near Deaver Vineyards that evening, you probably heard cries "Eureka, we've found it," echoing down the foothill canyons, coming from the perfect prime rib seekers in our midst. Students of early California history know that perfect prime rib seekers of the gold rush era first hollered that exclamation after tasting prime rib prepared by the ancestors of Leonard Sanders. Those in our midst who uttered that phrase for the same reason undoubtedly included Don and Pam Harley (Don was 1984 Tech Chair, Pam 1983 SVR Secretary and 1987 Social Director), Steve and Diane Harris (Steve and Diane co-chaired the 1995 Charity Auction), Joe, Jennifer and Abby Schumacher, Arnold and Trish O'Shields (Arnold drove his 1966 Porsche 911 to the 1988 San Francisco Region, SCCA, GT-2 class championship. Trish was 1976 Social co-Chair and co-chaired the 1976 Charity Auction), Rich McGlumphy and Karen Goffin, John Riley and family, Frank and Isabella Merritt, Rik and Lettie Larson (Lettie was SVR Secretary in 1976, editor in 1977/1978, and Treasurer in 1995/1996), George and Babette Hatten, Ken Reynolds and Catherine Taylor (who also celebrated their 10th anniversary as SVR members), Jon and Janet Kramer, Bob Bunnell and Angie Boyd, Bob and Elaine Cannon, Stephen and Vicki Childs, Richard and Anne Walker, Jim Crow (a real seeker of the perfect prime rib who was 1971 Treasurer of SVR, a DRIFTER advertiser, and former owner of Stereo Showcase on Fulton Avenue, a supplier of home and auto stereo systems), and Cookie Anderson and Gerry Cupler. As Ron said in his DRIFTER piece, "Enjoy dinner outdoors at dusk, listening to Blue Grass, with the best people and cars on earth." Worked for me.

Ron and Bente combined an interesting driving destination with a delicious, late-afternoon private wine tasting (I recommend their Zinfandel from 130-year-old vines), followed by a memorable Dutch Oven outdoor dinner at dusk on the expansive greengrass portion of the Deaver property with music and songs by the "Notorious" Shank Brothers, a four-piece Bluegrass Band from Woodland, California. If you like hard-core traditional Bluegrass, you'll like the solid combination of classic songs and instrumentals dished up by Al Shank's outfit. It's true to the original concept. Kern Breaux once played string bass with the Shank Brothers. For me, their music brought back fond memories. I'll bet some even hummed Foggy Mountain Breakdown or Dueling Banjos on the way home. The menu was terrific, a regular cowboy cookout. Ron purchased 10 racks of USDA Choice Prime Rib of Beef (approximately 25 to 30-pounds each). Ron's cook for the evening, Leonard Sanders, made sure each rack was rubbed with his special seasoning before it was put in the smoker. Leonard also cooked a potato dish (it was delicious, with bacon), rice pudding, and peach cobbler in black

Stirring the Pot with the Chief Spoon by Rik Larson, Vice President •

The October dinner at Wong’s is the traditional open meeting for accepting nominations from the floor for the 2011 Board of Directors. There are seven elected positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Director, Social Director, and Competition/Safety Director. We were very fortunate to have several members step up this current year (treasurer and editor). If you are interested in any of the board positions, just contact a current board member. CRAB 35 is beginning to really come together. The Funkahana will be interesting. Everybody gets to compete using the same car..........and it will be held at night. Mark the dates on your calendar now: Friday, April 29 thru Sunday, May 1, 2011. CRAB stands for Crab, Rally, Autocross, and Begegnen. So did you check out the PCA.ORG web site last month? There are now more YouTube videos posted. The latest one features the Porsche Escape held in British Columbia in September. If you go to the ‘videos’ section (this is different that the YouTube section) you can catch some neat clips featuring the new

Porsches. I counted at least 13 items available. That same section features a “Welcome to the Family” that features families who race and families that show their automobile. Each video runs about 2 minutes. •

In that same PCA.ORG, there is a “Tech Q&A” button that will get you to PCA’s experts. These are the folks on the PCA National Technical Committee and they are available to answer your questions about all things technical. You can Ask A Question, Search All Questions or examine Recent Answers. The Tech database provides for searching by model and model subcategory. And if you ask a question, you usually get a response within 24 hours.

Thinking about hosting/planning an event in 2011? The annual planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 6, 2011. You don’t have to wait till then to propose or schedule an event. Just contact me directly and we will help you get it calendared.

How I Drive? When using the left turn pocket at a signal, do you swing a little bit to the right over the line so that you get a better shot at the left turn? No me.

want to see it in your rear view mirror? Call us, we can make it happen!

Event: Christmas Tree Decorating and Potluck- When: November 28th 2:00PM - Location: Sacramento If you haven’t been to the California Auto Museum’s (formerly the Towe) annual Christmas Tree Decorating Party and Potluck you don’t know what you’re missing! This is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season with your friends and an opportunity to meet many new people in the club as well as other Automobile enthusiasts. This year, our club is responsible for putting the Party on for the Museum and we hope to see a lot of new faces to support the event. Bring an ornament for the tree! Our club has two Christmas trees to decorate and an ornament that you’ve made showing your car and/or yourselves is a great way to show the 1000’s of people that pass through the Museum during the Holiday Season just what a great car club we have. Decorating the Christmas Trees starts around 2:00pm and the Potluck starts around 4:15 pm. Last year we had over 250 people from different car clubs join the festivities and everyone brings a dish for the Potluck to share with the other car clubs. If your last name starts with A-J we are asking that you bring a main dish (casseroles, spaghetti, KFC, etc.); if your last mane starts with K-R please bring a side dish or salad (rolls, vegetables, green or fruit salad, etc.) and if your last name starts with S-Z please bring a desert (brownies, cookies, cakes, pie, etc.). The Museum has a refrigerator and microwave available and they provide beverages, utensils and other paper products. A highlight of this event every year is the Door Prize Raffle and they generally have some very nice gifts. If you plan on joining the fun this year. Please RSVP Kim Nelson so we can get a headcount at nelson356@gmail.com by Monday, November 22nd. We hope to see you there. Rachel and Kim
