SAVE ON TAXES AT THE GOODIE STORE by Cookie Anderson, SVR Goodiestorekeeper

We are going to have a cold winter. How do I know that? I read some years back in the Farmers Almanac that if acorns fall off the tree during early summer that we will have a cold winter. Guess what? My acorns have been falling off my oak tree since late June. So far that Farmers Almanac hasn’t been wrong. This is your chance on stocking up on warm clothes from the Goodie Store. Do you have a warm sweatshirt with the Porsche Crest yet? We have several sizes and colors on sale for $25.00 originally priced at $35.00. We have red vests with the small Porsche Crest sizes in medium, large and extra large for $35.00. SVR car badges $15.00, PCA car badges $18.00 and the new Zone 7 car badge $18.00. Drifting Back – September 2010 by Larry Wilson 30 Years Ago (September 1980) At the September 11 Board meeting, President Rik Larson announced the PCA Executive Council had awarded to Zone 7 the 1982 Porsche Parade to be held at Reno, Nevada, with a preliminary budget of $150,000. Treasurer Kern Breaux reported the SVR current balances were $300 in the checking account, and $500 in savings. The Sixth Annual two-day rally, September 20-21 Carrera de Sierra VI, co-chaired by Rik and Lettie Larson, drew 95 rally-cars to the Saturday start at Cordova Lodge. Stan Breyfogle wrote Saturday’s route through Ione, Jenny Lind, Angels Camp, and Jamestown to the lunch-stop in Sonora. Then, through Chinese Camp, Moccasin, Groveland, and Hardin Flat to Yosemite Valley with first car in at 3:30PM. At 5:00PM, all the beer and wine one could wish for was available with a barbecue steak dinner. At 10:00AM, Sunday’s action resumed, now written by Rik Larson through Coulterville, Oakdale, and Farmington to the finish in Stockton. Thirty-one PCA rally-cars were among the finishers. Thirty more SVR members worked the

starts and checkpoints making the event possible: Larsons, Breyfogle, Wilsons, Burkes, Neukoms, Weddles, Kings, Pastas, Robinsons, Peebles, Willis’s, Samples’s, David Simich and Kelley Byerley, Trische Robertson, Stacey Hill, Jennifer Morley, Stuart Cain, Lee Lyons, and Goose. And, how did SVR do, you ask? TWO FIRSTS in CLASS: Mose Thomas and Cyndee Nightingale (Beginner Class) and Ray and Sara Clements (Novice Class). Also in Novice Class making it a SWEEP were 2nd - Sanford Chance and Ellen Hollister, and 3rd - John and Barbara Smolich. Also, 7th - Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger, 8th - Mike Delgado and Alice McDonald, and 11th George and Nona Morley. In the Expert Unequipped Class: 3rd Jim and Joyce Karver, and 7th - Mike and Mary Peters.

20 Years Ago (September 1990) At the September 6 board meeting, President Sally Boeck mentioned that Serge Dubuc, from Porsche AG at Weissach on loan to PCNA in Reno for three months, called asking for a copy of THE DRIFTER. SVR Social Director Karen Mangin perked-up asking, “What, someone from the factory -- here -- as close as Reno? Gimme his phone number.” That was Thursday night. By Saturday morning, Karen had this nice gent lined-up to be the featured speaker with slides and stuff at the upcoming SVR meeting and Octoberfest in Davis. (Yup, he showed. Don’tcha just love it!) On September 16, SVR’s Charity Auction, Jean & Phil Keith and Marcy & Randy Vidmar co-chairs, raised $2,802 for Make-A-Wish Foundation. Once again at the home of Tom and Brenda Solter with their shady glen, babbling brook setting, the event featured premier hotdog chefs, Alma Thompson and Ray Clements, feeding the folks with all revenue to charity. Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson auctioned away lots of good stuff, including three bras, two Porsche and one Lilly of France.

A new look for the September 23-24 Carrera de Sierra XXIII event: It’s a combined rally-tour with Rik Larson/J. Toney in charge of the T&D rally, and Rich Swenson/Judy Hanna leading those who enjoy a nice mountain tour without the exasperations of a timeand-distance drill. Rich and Judy’s group were Tom and Jude Sisson, Dennis and Judy Stettner, Roger and Dan Walker, Jeff and Kim Kinder, and Jim and Linda McMahen. They headed to Pioneer for a German breakfast, then through Kirkwood, Carson Pass, Silver Lake (for snacks), into the South Tahoe valley, over to Emerald Bay, and then into Truckee for shopping and the overnight stop. On Sunday, it was back to Roseville for the event wind-up barbeque. Connie Miller, who wrote a nifty DRIFTER piece about experiencing her first-ever rally on this Carrera event, unfortunately had to forgo the barbeque awards presentation and thus the T&D results for the DRIFTER were also forgone, forever.

It was 2:00AM when Joyce Karver tippy-toed out of her cabin at Camp Curry, Yosemite Valley, heading for the bathroom in her pink, frilly nightie, the one that husband Jim brought for her at Victora’s Secret. They had just finished the first day of the two-day T&D rally, Carrera de Sierra XIII, September 22-23. Phillip Marks was chair with John Clever as rallymaster. On her way back, and without a flashlight or glasses, Joyce gets lost and can’t remember her cabin number or location. At 2:00AM, she’s not about to go banging on doors, so when you next see her (not Jim), ask her if and how she made it back. Now, back to the rally. Forty-two rally cars (11 from SVR) ran the event and SVR workers were Lettie Larson’s mom, Nona & George Morley, Pat & Larry Wilson, Chilli, Vicki & Michelle Willis, and Rod, Chris & Jason Sorenson. SVR top finishers after two days and 11 legs of rallying were Bob Dennison and Elizabeth Carr who were FIRST in the 20-car Beginners Class. Sally and Ron Boeck finished SECOND in Expert Unequipped Class, and Dolores and Allen Weddle were SIXTH in the 11-car Novice Class. 10 Years Ago (September 2000) The September 9 Autocross at Mather Field with Glen Brooksby and Bill Winkler in charge, brought out 35 drivers looking for instruction and/or competition. And, they got both on a mile-long course with two long slaloms and a mixture of slow, medium and higher speed corners designed by Bruce Shaw. The set-up crew of Russ Hildebrand, Tim Howard, and Bruce Shaw did their work, and Mike Ambrozewicz brought his magic bratwurst barbeque to provide lunch for the autocrossers and cash for the SVR autocross trailer fund. At the end of the day, Steve Nieslony in his new 1972 914 nailed a four-second margin over his nearest competitor, Russ Hildebrand, who in turn nipped Glen Brooksby. Ron Kain and Troy Allison showed marked improvement during the day, and Mike Ambrozewicz the driver edged Bruce Shaw for Class Bm honors. John Kessler returned from his autocross vacation, and first-year driver Fred Haines moved near to the top of the stock-car class.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, before good roads and reliable autos, San Franciscans traveling to Sacramento, Marysville and Chico rode inter-urban electric trains, or trolleys. Ranging from Spartan to luxurious, all paused at Rio Vista Junction, just east of Travis AFB, to pick up and discharge passengers. Rio Vista Junction depot is long gone, but the superb Western Railway Museum, showcasing many of those trolleys, brings it back to life. The Western Railway Museum provides a rare opportunity to experience to travel as Californians did a hundred years ago. The museum includes over 100 trolleys and cars, miles of restored track, a car house, a restoration shop and a beautiful, new visitors’ center housing artifacts, a book/souvenir store and research library. From the Calfornia Auto Museum, we’ll wind along the Sacramento River to the smooth, winding, Porsche-friendly roads of the Montezuma Hills. The huge windmills we'll pass resemble other-worldly creatures. After arriving at the museum, you’re on your own. Pick your adventure! •

Ride an electric train through the picturesque Montezuma Hills on the original historic mainline tracks of the Sacramento Northern Interurban Railway. Coach passengers (included in the cost of admission) will travel in a car that spent its life traveling from Oakland to Chico over the same rail line you’ll be riding on. Wellpreserved, it sports plush red seats and dark wood paneling.

• Check out the 25 antique trolleys in the new 20,000 sq ft Car House. Many additional displays are located outdoors. • Picnic in tree-shaded Laflin Park on the museum grounds or at the pumpkin patch. • Take a guided tour of Car House Three at 1:15 or of Car House One at 2:45. • Enjoy a 15 minute long trolley ride around the museum grounds. Departure times: 20 and 40 minutes past the hour. • Pumpkin Patch. A treat lies a few miles down the historic tracks of the Sacramento Northern interurban mainline. Ride a trolley to the tree-shaded pumpkin patch in Gum Grove. Browse the food and gift booths, enjoy a hay ride behind a slow-moving tractor and climb the hay bale castle, a favorite of both children and adults. Bales are carefully stacked to leave kid-sized tunnels, great for exploring. Shoot small pumpkins at distant targets with a giant slingshot. • Visit the museum store and browse thru books and souvenirs for adults and children. Everybody and all vehicle types are welcome. Pop the kids into your Porsche or non-Porsche and treat them to a day they won't soon forget. Lunch: Bring a picnic. Food is also available at the museum café and usually at Gum Grove. SVR Trip fee is $5.00 or one Fun Buck per car. Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for children 14 and under, payable at the door. Coach rides are included in the price of admission. The first class parlor-observation car is $5 additional. Prep. Arrive with a full tank of gas. Radios channel 9, subchannel 6. Camera. Meet at the California Automobile Museum (formerly Towe Ford Museum) 2200 Front Street, Sacramento. Registration begins at 10:00. Drivers' meeting at 10:20 and departure at 10:30. Stirring the Pot with the Chief Spoon by Rik Larson, Vice President •

You need to check out the PCA.ORG site to see some of the YouTube videos that have been posted. Besides the Porsche Parade held in Illinois they also have the Legends of the Autobahn held in Carmel in August. And check out the videos spotlighting the 356 of Sandy and Tom Provasi (Loma Prieta Region) as well as the RS America of KC and Larry Sharp (Golden Gate Region). Other videos featured on the website include: Porsche 918 Spyder, Pike’s Peak.

A couple of events were cancelled recently; the SVR AX in July and the Kid’s Great Search event in August. Not enough people to conduct the AX (and it was going to be real hot) and no inquiries or reservations for the Kid’s event.

1973 Porsche 911 T raffle? Yes, Porsche Classic will be restoring it for the 2011 PCA raffle. The car will be restored to its original color of silver. This car was on display at the Porsche Parade in July. It even had a SCCA San Francisco Region Tech sticker on the windshield.

Tim Fleming (SVR President in 2000) is running for Treasurer for PCA National. Check his name on the ballot when you receive it in the mail in November. I promised Tim that I would not campaign for a write-in against him.

Charity Auction time is coming up on the 12th. Might as well grab those spare wheels, bras, Porsche items, etc. and package them up for our charity event to be held on Sunday, September 12th at the Folsom City Park. Tambra Kroetz is the chairperson and will be glad to help you get items to the event in case you are not able to attend. Some of the interesting items donated in the past have included vacation home rentals, gift baskets, home dinners, etc.

If you plan on going on the Mendocino Tour in November, you need to get a room now. Check out the event flyer elsewhere in this issue. We currently have about 20 rooms at the Little River Inn (contact me for info) and about 15 rooms at the Hill House in Mendocino.

August Board Minutes

DRIFTER: Kyle Gong asked about the status of advertisers for the future. Things appear to be on track for 2011.

CALL TO ORDER

Membership: Doug Klein supplied the membership numbers. The region is composed of 554 regular members, 453 affiliate members and 5 dual members for a total of 1,012, up three since last month. Doug also provided a handout to the board members entitled “ Advertising Your Event”. It will also be placed up on the SVR website for all members to reference.

by Kevin R. Dougherty, 2010 Secretary

President Cookie Anderson called the meeting to order at 6:40 PM. Attending: Cookie Anderson, Doug Klein, Helen Ashuckian, Rik Larson, John Murphy, Mike Willis, Phil Wood, Jerry Cupler, Frederick Rauch, Kyle Gong. Minutes: The July minutes were reviewed and accepted. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: Christmas Dinner budget was approved. The dinner will be limited to 150 people. A $1500 subsidy will be used to offset the cost of the dinner. •Best Events and Tours discussion. After much discussion, it was decided (motion) to let the President select events for awards at yearend. John Murphy requested an item be placed on the agenda for the next meeting to discuss determination of events. •Board Members for 2011. Several of the existing board members will be putting their hat in the ring to serve on the 2011 SVR Board of Directors. SVR members are encouraged to contact Mike Willis or Cookie Anderson regarding serving on the board in 2011. The October dinner (per the SVR By-Laws) will also accept nominations from the floor. •Kid’s Great Search and Discovery Tour this Saturday. Helen Ashuckian indicated that no one has contacted her regarding running the event (except for Rik Larson and Jerry Cupler who had volunteered). The event will be cancelled (put it in the bag for a future time). Mike Willis will send out an e-mail BLAST that the event is being cancelled. Rik Larson will also cancel the insurance with PCA National.

Treasurer: Phil Wood reports SVR is adequately funded for all budgeted events. Treasurer closed 5/31 DE, 6/26 Concours and 7/12 dinner events. Only the 9/12 Charity event is open. Treasurer also presented an YTD summary of event profitability – Dinners, Concours and AX events are running at break-even – Only DEs are significantly contributing to our bottom line. Treasurer also started conversion from paper checks to Wells Fargo eChecks. No complaints to date. New Member Group: Doug reported that the evening tour had 10 people. They finished at a beautiful park in Foresthill. The next event is a tour to Silver Lake that is scheduled for August 14th. Cookie Anderson and Jerry Cupler plan to attend this tour. Goodie Store: No Report Social Director: Helen Ashuckian reported that the November dinner will cost $25 a person. The Charity Auction will be held on Sunday, September 12th. A request will also be sent to PCA National for $385 as part of the charity function. A clarification was noted (motion approved) that the proceeds of the auction (i.e. the gross income) go to the charity. Expenses are expected to be covered by the PCA grant with any excess going to the charity. The budget for the September dinner was submitted and approved. The budget for the Wine Appreciation by David Hoffman on October 17th was submitted and approved. Webmaster: John Murphy reported that it is still there (no report on any specific country this time).

BOARD MEMBER AND COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS:

Vice President: Rik Larson reported that several event reports are still outstanding. Insurance has been requested for all events up to but not including the August 28th dinner.

Charity Auction: need some additional information in the DRIFTER to help publicize and push this event.

President: Cookie and Jerry moved the AX trailer out of the storage facility for a few days because of repaving of the lot.

Competition Director: the July AX was cancelled due to low response to past attendees that they would be attending. It was also expected to be extremely hot that weekend. Frederick Rauch also indicated that they still had not purchased new cones yet. The monies from the DE event held in May at Laguna Seca have been sent to Phil Wood. He is very happy. The other SVR DE is coming up in December at Laguna Seca. A discussion of the use of the ‘motorsportsreg.com’ site for registration purposes ensued. Phil Wood will look at it and report back to the board. Frederick will also talk to Bob Peake about doing pre-registration for our AX’s.

Meeting adjourned: 8:35 P.M. Next Meeting: RPM Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 6:30 PM.

Advertising Mike Willis indicated that we will be losing one advertiser at the end of the calendar year. We also have an outstanding amount due for an advertiser for the membership directory (since paid). Mike suggested that billing for the 2011 DRIFTER ads go out around October 15th.

What’s in a name (SVR)? by Phil Wood, SVR Treasurer

Many moons ago, my employer, a company enamored with TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms), published an employee directory listing and expanding company jargon – I remember there were twelve entries for ESD ranging from Entry Systems Division to ElectroStatic Discharge. More recently, we learned during the Russian spy drama that the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, who formerly had a KGB TLA, now carries an SVR TLA. SVR? Like Sacramento Valley Region? Personally, SVR and the Sacramento Valley moniker aren’t appealing – Those of us in the foothills or southern Yolo County are not in the Sacramento Valley and might not want to be bundled in with the big city folk. Second, the Sacramento Valley is hardly unique – Anyone stationed at Holloman AFB knows that Sacramento Valley is in New Mexico. And I’m pretty sure there are Sacramento Valleys in Arizona and Pennsylvania. But that’s not all – Glance at the other Zone 7 regions and their names: Redwood and Sequoia – Are there any two more stately and royal representations of our state and heritage? Rising high above the land they have observed generations of California residents come and go. They have presided over California developments and inventions. I would be proud to be a member of an organization called Redwood or Sequoia. Monterey Bay and Yosemite – Even as a boy growing up in a foreign country I knew what Yosemite was. (I may have pronounced it funny but I knew what it was.) And Monterey is equally familiar to millions across the world. These are famous and world-renowned places. If a bartender in Casablanca, Morocco asks you where you’re from and you say “Monterey, California,” I’ll guarantee you’ll get a smile with that drink.

Shasta and Sierra Nevada – Not trumping, but complementing Redwood and Sequoia are the names of a majestic mountain and mountain range. Shasta has been poetically described as “Lonely as God, and white as a winter moon, Mount Shasta starts up sudden and solitary from the heart of the great black forests of Northern California” while the Sierra Nevadas command and demand our attention every time we look east – Early settlers lost their lives on Donner, Lake Tahoe is a popular destination to get out of the valley’s heat, and who hasn’t skied one of the Sierra’s magnificent slopes? Diablo and Loma Prieta – I have no idea what Loma Prieta means but I like it. It’s sexy! Like my Porsche. And Diablo? That’s just as sexy. And naughty to boot. Lamborghini even named a car Diablo. That’s sexy as well. Need I say more? Golden Gate – OK, the City by the Bay has so many great nicknames to choose from that it’s unfair to the rest of us. Even “San Francisco” is a great name. Earthquake City would have been unique but Golden Gate is perfect. Symbolizing the strength and beauty of that city, and even more than Yosemite and Monterey Bay, the name Golden Gate is recognizable across the world. So that brings us to Zone 7’s tenth region, Sacramento Valley Region. My apologies to the individual who originally named our region, but Sacramento Valley Region sounds more like an Oldsmobile car club than a Porsche car club. Am I wrong? Given a choice, I would go with El Dorado – It’s just as sexy as Loma Prieta or Diablo, to me it has a bit of a naughty connotation, it’s part of our area’s grand heritage, it rolls of the tongue better than Sacramento Valley and well, I live in El Dorado County. Failing that I’d choose Gold Country; another historic and identifying representation of our area. And I’m pretty sure there are no “Gold Countrys” in New Mexico or Arizona or Pennsylvania. Practically speaking, changing a corporation’s name is a challenge. The paperwork is genuinely daunting, and every federal, state and local agency extracts a processing fee, so I’m not holding my breath. But as a card-carrying, Porsche driving, SVR member, I wonder if I’m not the only one who would like to jazz things up just a bit. Thoughts?

Schedule: leave Niello Porsche on Friday morning; lunch stop in the wine country; social on Friday evening. Saturday is open (kite flying, miniature golf, shopping, Botanical Gardens, etc.). Sunday is also open with folks generally returning home in small groups. Don’t miss out on this popular tour -------- we even have members from other regions join us for a good time.
