Chilli’s chatter by Mike Willis

I

can’t believe it’s already May. The weather’s getting warmer, and it’s time to find the Porsche in garage, disconnect the battery charger, turn the key, listen for the Porsche tone, back it out, and enjoy the drive. If the drive includes an SVR event that would even make it better. The new members tour and the G24 gathering in March gave me the opportunity to meet more of our new members, and I’m looking forward to continue seeing them so that they can feel welcome in the club and at our events. Thanks to Rik Larson, Rachel Johnson and Kim Nelson for putting on these two events. They were extremely well attended and lots of enthusiasm was present. Randy Vidmar is our Dummkopf chair and is looking for tidbits of information that are normally Porsche-related, so that this coveted award can be given at dinner meetings. The names on the award reflect a lot of Porsche history, which, I am sure, some would like to forget. So in the Porsche world it is really OK to fink on your buddies. Please note that the May 5th Racing Aircraft Tour has cancelled because most of the aircraft would have not been there for us to see. Please watch the Drifter event calendar and the www.derporsche.net web page for a rescheduled date. Our dinner meeting and share-the-wealth is on May 10th. Sheila McDade and Barbie Flores are chairing the dinner at the Back Forty Texas BBQ. Herb Hoover will conduct share-the-wealth, so bring those neat goodies to share with others for a raffle ticket or two. The DE program continues with participation in the May 11th TrackMasters event at Thunderhill. On May 26th and 27th there will be a nice drive around 3 to 4-mile track at Reno-Fernley. If this is not enough, there’s another DE at Thunderhill on June 1st. SVR’s first autocross series event will be in Stockton on May 12th with Matt Deter in charge. This is a perfect place to bring out your Porsche and learn how it drives “at the edge.” We have our own instructors who are willing to teach the aspects of autocrossing “at the edge.” Autocrossing is fun and you can learn a lot. The San Simeon tour will be on May 18th-21th. Most of the signups will have happened by the time you get this issue, but some last-minute entries might be possible. Please note that Emily and I will be on vacation from April 27th to May 9th and will respond to the last-minute requests when we return. For those who rally, who no longer rally, or have never rallied, Keith McMahan is putting on the strife-free Summer Solstice Rally June 16th. Every rally team will have the same A/B instructions. See the details on page 18. As summer approaches, tours become more frequent. See the ads in this issue. We kick off our concours this year with the Zone 7 Concours again at Niello Porsche on June 17th. Last year’s event was excellent and so should one be. Remember: making this fun for all is our goal.

What is this thing called “Dummkopf?” by Randy Vidmar

Hi

, I’m Randy, and I’m the Dummkopf person, again. This dubious award has been around for a very long time - at least 22 years that I know of. I heard about it the first year I was in SVR and became a recipient shortly thereafter. The award is given to the person or persons who display the uncanniest ability to do the most remarkable things while not thinking about what is really happening. The essential thing about this award is that it requires the support of all of the club members. Club events provide a target-rich environment for things that “just happen.” One must note however, that “observations” are not limited to club events. Things can happen anywhere. One of the reasons for this article is to introduce the new members to an old and established SVR tradition and how it works. Every month we will have a Dummkopf Award given at the SVR Dinner Meeting to the most deserving individual or individuals. We will use the famous “clappo-meter” which is a very high level precision instrument that measures the amount of your applause. Whoever gets the most applause gets the award. See, it’s real simple. One of the things I have noticed over the years is that the Dummkopf Award brings all of us much closer together because we have two things in common: we are all human, and we all drive Porsches, so life is good. Our little group is unique in this day and age where the appearance of most cars is very generic. In fact, I can’t tell them apart most of the time. However, when

I see a Porsche, I immediately know what it is. Do you still flash your lights at another Porsche? Anyway, I need your help with our Dummkopf Award. I have asked our president to include my e-mail in The Drifter so other members can readily contact me. Here it is again: oldbearbones@sbcglobal.net. Please feel free to contact me throughout the month, and I will see to it that we vote on things at the next dinner meeting. The source of any Dummkopf information to me will remain anonymous. By the way, I don’t make these things up. Whoever gets the award will retain it throughout the month and then is required to bring it to the next meeting. During the month the person who “owns” it must have it engraved with their name and the date. That way we have a historical record of our region’s glorious (infamous) past. A couple of examples of past awards are: draining the oil of a 911 in one’s garage not knowing that it holds over 13 quarts. (Read, oil runs down the driveway), a person leading a wonderful tour ending up going down the wrong road to a dead end and 30 cars have to do a u-turn (done by tour leader). Ever see the movie “Animal House” in which the band goes down a street to dead end? Same thing. Well, that’s about it, except that once again, I do need your help. This is a lot of fun and really brings us together, so please let me know or send me an e-mail message. See you down the road and drive safely.

Drifting Back May 2007 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (May 1977) The May 6 dinner meeting arranged by Al King at Neptune’s Table was also a celebration of SVR’s 15th anniversary and featured a large birthday cake. Kirk Bradford announced that John and Candy Wong had such a good time chairing CRAB 6 last month that they are now expecting an addition to the family. Geary Lyons got the Dummkopf Award for running over the top of his 914 at a recent autocross. The May 7/8 Zone 7 “High Speed Autocross School,” chaired by Dwight Mitchell at Cal-Expo, was a well-organized event with three driver- and worker-groups to share the workload. Mike Willis and Dave Neukom were instrumental in making the event run smoothly. The May Drifter advertised a limited number of the nifty SVR 15th Anniversary polo shirt made available by Randy Blaesi with CRAB and SVR logos in dark blue on a gold shirt. Also, the Wes Lasher Porsche parts ad included “factory original 1600 normal pistons & cylinders at $125 per set.” The mile-long parade of participants on the May 15 SVR Gold Rush Tour by Allen Weddle and Darrell Butner found its way to Placerville and then to Greg Boeger’s Winery for a few sips with lunch. Picnickers were entertained with Marie Smith’s “passionate wine stories.” Then to Shenendoah Valley and D’Agostini’s followed by Volcano, where Jim McDade, Jim Hans, Allen Koche, Richard Wetzel and Jane Coons, and C.C. and Launa Craig took most of the poker prizes before dinner at the National Hotel in Jackson. Ted and Kaylaine Robinson and Paul and Gail Bates joined the group for dinner. 20 Years Ago (May 1987) According to Bill Newlin (Golden Gate Region), who wrote the DRIFTER article about the May 1-3, CRAB 16 weekend, “this year’s CRAB event was one of the best ever, and co-chairs Dwight and Linda Mitchell did a super job.” Beginning Friday night, with Bob Siles and Garth Mason running the excellent CRAB bar next to Cyndee Nightingale’s registration operation,

through the beer and brat closer on Sunday cooked up by C.C. Craig and Karen Mangin, the CRAB 16 team ensured non-stop fun all weekend for entrants in the 143 cars registered. Kern Breaux chaired the “Kern’s Kinky Kowboy Kaos” funkhana with GGR-members Jeff Reitmeir and Stacy Lynd the horsey winners. Don and Pam Harley were historic co-chairs for the historic tour competition won by Diablo Region members Kirk and Carolyn Doberenz. Bill and Rebecca Newlin won first and second TTOD in the Bob Peake-chaired autocross. Voice of CRAB Kirk Bradford kept the banquet program moving featuring classy ceramic awards created by Tambra Kroetz, and a multitude of door prizes scrounged up by Ken and Marcella Mitchell. Redwood Region member Stan Michelman chaired the REEBOX dance marathon which nearly gave Jim McDade a cardiac arrest for only second place. Diablo Region member John Clever drove solo and won Rik Larson’s rally through the Delta wearing a T-shirt he got from Randy and Marcy Vidmar at the CRAB 16 Goodie Store. The 4th annual Grand Island Mansion Tour, this time May 17, by Allen and Dolores Weddle started at Shari’s Restaurant on Florin Road and proceeded as a mirror tour, using the levee road on both sides of the Sacramento River, to the Delta country and a champagne brunch on the terrace of the Grand Island Mansion. With parking in front of the Mansion reserved for Porsches, photo ops were offered to many. Eighty PCAers in 35 cars and two boats participated this year - the Steve Taggarts and the Joe Reitmeirs added a new dimension to the tour arriving by boat. Fred Siegner also celebrated his birthday. Fourteen SVR members participated in the May 31 Zone 7 autocross at Pleasanton Fair Grounds hosted by the Diablo Region: Greg Peart, Cyndee Nightingale, Rich McGlumphy, Kern and Cindi Breaux, Bruce Westrup, Dwight and Linda Mitchell, Ray and Sara Clements, Sue McGlumphy, Jack Samples, and

Pat and Larry Wilson. Jim Pasha was event chair and came up with a controversial track layout for the 123-driver entry-field that featured ONLY right turns (8 of them), and permitted third gear two times per lap. 10 Years Ago (May 1997) Allen and Dolores Weddle’s May 4th Champagne Brunch Tour with 20 Porsches in tow visited the Wine and Roses Country Inn on a hot day and the menu included homemade pastries, fresh fruits from the valley, fruit cobbler, fresh baked breads, cheeses and meats, scrambled eggs, ham, sausages, bacon, quiche, crepes, green salads, salmon, shrimp, and of course the traditional champagne. John and Tina Murphy wrote the recap Drifter article on this one with John probably writing the incomprehensible part about a flying opossum encountered by Deb and Dan Catherwood and Ron and Sally Boeck during their CB-conversation about whether Merlot was an okay wine. The smart ones were June Samples and Fred Seigner who arrived earlier and greeted the group while sipping blissfully at a shaded table bearing chilled champagne in the grassy parking area. The May 10th Brewery Tour and Picnic, chaired by Jim McMahen and Neil Pearl, took the group to the Sierra Nevada Brewery and Bidwell Mansion in Chico, but the best part was the event raffle prize: a case of Sierra Nevada beer. Jeff Kinder arranged the May 14 Wednesday evening Tire Technology tech session with America’s Tire Store on Sunrise and Yokohama Tire Co. as hosts. Jose Uranga chaired the May 18th SVR Charity Car Show at the Pavillions Shopping Center. The Pavillions contributed $300

8

to the Mustard Seed School, the event’s beneficiary. Nineteen Porsches, including 356, 911, 928, 944, C4, and Boxster models, were on display and a “people’s choice” format was used to determine the two best cars. After 111 votes cast during the day were counted, the 1960 356B Roadster of Ray Alamares was the winner and the new Boxster of Ray Gin came in second. Both Rays received nice wine basket prizes. Phil Lawrence entered his Green Machine (911) in the May 25th Diablo Region-hosted “12th Annual Auto Enthusiast All Porsche Wash ‘N’ Shine Concours” in Danville and came away with the Best of Show award. The organizers said his car epitomized wash and shine principles: a well-maintained car, not all original, but pleasing to look at.

May 5 race aircraft tour cancelled Some of the aircraft have been placed in other locations, and some major personnel changes in crew organizations have been made. These developments have caused difficulties that force the cancellation of the event.

G24 gathering at Niello Porsche by Rachel Johnson and Kim Nelson, G24 Chairs

O

hhh G…. 24, what a great day we had! The program is alive and kicking, and growing. We had a sellout crowd with standing room only at Niello Porsche in Rocklin on March 24th. The morning started with the usual ritual of sign-in, of course. Everyone was chatin’ and checkin’ out all the great stuff Niello has in the goodie store. When the first bell rang, we went to the upstairs meeting room where we were greeted by a first-class array of breakfast treats, compliments of Niello, that included bagels, spreads, doughnuts of all flavors and, of course, topnotch coffee and bottled water. Attendees introduced themselves and told when they joined the club and what beautiful set of wheels they drive. Attending board members in attendance were introduced, Mike Willis, Rik Larson, Matt Deter, Cookie Anderson, and Zone 7 National Representative Larry Sharp. An extra special guest, Rick Weidner, the creator of G24, was on hand, too.

There was discussion about what G24 is (members in the club for 24 months or less) and how it helps new members integrate into the club. We have found out that that the success of the program is creating a stir in other PCA regions. The next order of business was comments from our friendly Niello Porsche staff. General Manager Don Faerber talked about the dealership, and how it earned the much-deserved premier dealership status among the top-25 Porsche dealerships in the U.S.! Congratulations to Niello! Nancy Coburn, Sales Manager, was up next to talk about what kind of cars they order and how special ordering is done. We then heard from Service Manager Jim Webber, who spoke about their competitive rates, free car inspections and how they will match prices of the independents on service. The service department is being expanded to include new and older Porsches.

Next stop was the service bay area where we met Finance Director Todd English, who gave us an up-close-and-personal overview of the new 2008 Cayenne. We thank the staff of Niello Porsche for their hospitality and for spending the time with all of us. Thanks to all the G24 members for coming and we hope to see you all and the others who could not make it at our next G24 meeting on Sunday, June 24th when we will see how old Porsches are restored and brought back to life. Be sure to look for e-mail blasts for this upcoming event. You will not want to miss it!

Interior restoration

by Lisa Thomas, SVR Technical Chair

W

ith my C4 temporarily missing, the only fulfilling cure to my empty garage syndrome was to finally pay some attention to my SC that’s been envisioned as everything from the next racecar to the RS clone. This car arrived with just one seat, and the rest of its interior was in a big pile behind it. All of it was dirty, but had a pretty shade of blue leather and wool carpet. The problem was that I had only one seat, so I decided to recolor the two tan seats I had removed from the C4. After doing some research online, I found most Porschephiles use only one of two products - Leatherique or Color-Plus. Their ingredients sounded similar to me, so I chose Color-Plus because it was slightly less expensive. I am amazed at this stuff! It cleans up with soap and water, is non-toxic, and casein-based. Casein is one of the natural components of milk, which seems fitting to then use on leather. Joanne of Color-Plus was very helpful and knowledgeable. She asked for a sample of my interior color, and then mixed the color to match, suggesting I would need a quart to do the two seats. I ended up having enough left over to apply to all the other faded bits. If your leather or vinyl interior is in good or excellent condition, but stained or faded from the sun, there is an inexpensive fix you can do at home. The dye requires no thinning, but water can be added if applying with a spray gun. At first I applied with a spray gun, but found I liked a paintbrush better. Both of these methods can be used. The results are incredible, and you’ll save a bundle over buying a complete reproduction interior kit. The Color-Plus products I ordered included the cleaner, a softener (leather conditioner), a filler (for the cracks in the driver seat), and the dye. Using a stiff bristle paintbrush, work the cleaner into the grain of the material in order to remove all skin oils, dirt, or vinyl conditioners you might have applied over the years. Wipe the cleaner off with a clean damp towel. If your material is really soiled, several cleanings might be necessary. The surface must be as clean as you can get it for the best adhesion of the dye. For best results, also remove any emblems and metal trim pieces prior to cleaning.

The seats have faded to several different shades of tan, but their seams, stitching and overall condition is excellent. Take the seats apart completely prior to cleaning them. Make sure to color every nook and cranny. Be sure to use the paintbrush to get all surface dirt from the stitched areas. (This might seem trivial until the color starts to lift because you didn’t clean the surface completely.) After cleaning each part, allow at least twelve hours drying time indoors or an hour or so in the hot sun. These seats sat in the bright sun for about two hours and were completely dry prior to applying color. For best results, the temperature should be between 70-85 degrees. Apply several light coats in a smooth back-and-forth motion. Allow ten minutes between coats. You are not trying to achieve a glossy surface, just applying the color. If you’re changing color, several coats are required. To do an average interior, about one quart will be necessary. The same process can be used on hard plastic parts too, like the steering wheel. Again, several light coats will work better than a heavy application. As you can see, these seventeen-year-old leather seats look like new again. The cleaning process took the better part of a day, but adding the color only took a few hours. The results are stunning when compared to the former condition, and the cost was minimal. If you don’t mind doing the restoration work yourself, it’s the only way to go. Plus, your interior can look like it did the day it rolled off the assembly line. This process will work on any year, make or model vehicle.

Kern & Cindi’s charity auction will be submitted for the award. Old Business: • Out of the Box Suggestion Letter: Keith McMahan’s letter was reviewed in depth. All agreed the letter was well thought out and that his suggestions should be given careful consideration. Mike will write to Keith thanking him for his time and suggestions • Timing Displays: Matt gave a presentation on autocross displays. Matt’s recommended not to get the wireless version at this time since it can be added later. The board approved the purchase. • Advertising: The bills were sent out; all of the current advertisers of the roster are on board again. Advertising inserts were discussed and will be discussed . • CRAB Budget: There were several questions asked and answered.

Treasurer (Ray for Betty Silva): The club remains in fine financial shape. Membership (Rik Larson): Highlights: E-mail errors should drop with the latest update. After minor changes to the roster, it will be ready to print. We should send the ballot out first class mail to see whose addresses are good and whose are not. There are still database problems between National and SVR, but they seem to be smaller than before. Social (Cookie Anderson): Bills have been sent out to people who made reservations for the last dinner meeting but did not show. May dinner meeting is on the 10th at Back Forty Barbecue in Roseville and is limited to 40 folks. Frederick is hosting the June dinner meeting with details to follow. Rally (Helen Ashuckian): Kid rally went over very well. CRAB rally through the Delta is being finalized and will cover about 65 miles. G24 (Mike Willis in for Kim & Rachel): Zone Rep. Larry Sharp was at the meeting at Niello. It was full of enthusiastic new members, many of whom were also on the new members tour. Webmaster (John Murphy): Events are still the big hits. Someone from Akrotiri checked out are website (do you know where that is?). China continues to be one of the big lookers but Sunnyvale continues to be number one! Vice President (Kern Breaux): Calendar has been updated. All the insurance certificates have been ordered. Past President (Jeff Kinder): Nothing to report. President: Terry Grillo has cleaned off the old hard drive and will mail it back to us via USPS. Adjournment was at 911: P.M. (Funny how it works out like that so often!) The next board meeting will be at RPM on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at 7:00 P.M. Respectfully Submitted, Kevin R. Dougherty, 2007 Secretary

Board Member Reports: Competition (Matt Deter): The flyer for the Zone 7 concours at Niello has been made up and distributed to the other regions. Competition spending is expected to be below budget because we allowed for the possibility of buying the more expensive wireless option when we budgeted for the timing display. Zone 7 borrowed the autocross trailer for the event at Altamont Raceway and in return will give SVR new cones as payment. The event was a success, with 80 drivers entered. Driver Education (Frederick Rauch): Frederick discussed the new National rule forbidding the co-hosting of events due to insurance issues. In the future we will follow the PCA rules, but we will not co-host the event. TrackMasters will run the event and we will market it to our members Newsletter (Bud Behrens): Submitted written report. Thanks to everyone for getting the articles in on time.

Kid rally

by Helen Ashuckian

F

rom the comments that were received after the rally was over, a grand time was had by all of the participants. The six rally cars traveled through Folsom, Orangevale, Roseville, Loomis and Granite Bay, searching for the signs that would give them the words they needed to fill in the blanks in their route instructions. A trailer that lost a wheel on the Auburn-Folsom Road caused two of the cars to miss the turn to Orangevale, but all found their way to the end at Round Table Pizza in Granite Bay. Many thanks to workers Rik Larson, George Morley, Yasser Sowb. The results: Class 1: (ages 8-10) 1st place: Tyler Cespedes with dad Eddie Cespedes, 2nd place: Brad Chee with uncle Collin Fat. Class 2: (ages 11-12) 1st place: Hannah George with granddad Don Songey, 2nd place: Chad Prizmich with aunt Cari Hendricks Class 3: (age 14) 1st place: Austin George with granddad Don Songey.2nd place: Anthony Sainson with uncle Matt Sainson Class 4: (age 15) 1st place: Alex Frenna with dad Don Frenna.

Murphys Tour Sunday, June 10

BS (Barbie & Sheila) Wine Tour - Sunday, June 24

by Jeff Kinder

by Sheila McDade

Y

ou’re invited to join us on a fun run through the Sierra foothills and a picnic-style lunch at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. Since Ironstone does not allow outside food or beverage on their property, plan to purchase lunch at the Ironstone deli. Lunch prices range from sandwiches (usually about $7.95) to a “miner’s box lunch” (includes a sandwich, salad, cookie and drink) for $12.00. There are antiques located throughout the tasting room, and barrel-filled caverns with flowing waterfalls. The Heritage Museum contains a collection of gold rush treasures, including a rare forty-four-pound crystalline gold leaf specimen - the largest in the world. After lunch there will be an optional tour to Mokelumne Hill. Anyone not wanting to go to Mokelumne Hill may attend a complementary wine tour at 1:30 P.M., or spend more time in Murphys, or head on home. Ironstone will provide a dedicated parking area in their amphitheatre so that our Porsches can be parked together and displayed nicely. Meet at 9:00 A.M in front of Starbuck’s, 4311 Town Center Boulevard in El Dorado Hills. The Town Center shopping area is located on Latrobe Road, just south of Highway 50. There will be a tour fee of $2 per person. Please RSVP because there will be a limit of 20 cars. E-mail your RSVP to Ron & Tobie Reagan at reagan1950@yahoo.com or Jeff & Kim Kinder at 993cab@sbcglobal.net.

P

lease join us for a truly exciting day touring the Napa Valley. The tour will start at 8:30 A.M. sharp from the Bel Air Market parking lot in Rocklin. Bel Air Market is located at the corner of Stanford Ranch Road and Sunset Boulevard. We will tour on some very interesting back roads, most of which never been used before on a Napa Wine Tour. The first winery will be Chateau Potelle, where we will have a private tour followed by a picnic. Our next stop will be Mumm’s Napa Valley for another private tour and tasting of their excellent sparkling wine. The final winery visited will be the Frank Family Vineyards, which has one of the friendliest tasting room staffs in the valley. This will be the end of the official tour. There will be an optional dinner at a fine Napa Valley restaurant. If you plan to join us for the after tour dinner, please call Barbie or Sheila and get on the dinner list. Don’t forget to bring a picnic lunch and a full tank of gas. The cost of the tour and tasting is $15.00 per person. To reserve your spot for the tour/dinner or for further information please contact the BS Twins at 916.631.0819 or 916.632.1737.

There are no “traps” on this rally; it is a nice event for first timers and will be good preparation for the Parade rally in San Diego. Bring a partner to drive or navigate, a car (preferably-but not necessarily a Porsche) and have $4.00 handy for a bridge toll. A clipboard and accurate watch will help too.

We will fit you to a “T” . . . by Tom Sisson

Y

ou already know about the great SVR logo Polo shirts. The “Goodie Store” has a number in stock right now, and they are only $30.00 (plus shipping of $5.00 to your house if want). Get them now for the upcoming Parade! Don’t go topless! We can also order more, and deliveries have been coming quicker. We can also get a number of T-shirts ($18.00-$20.00), sweat shirts (it’s cool down near the ocean you know) and some other goodies like fleece vests ($35.00). Don’t miss out! Why do we fit you to a “T”? Wouldn’t you really rather they fit to a “U”? The origin of the expression is graphic, and refers to a “T” square used by draftsmen (mostly male) with a drawing board (obviously before computers) to make technical drawings. Fitted to the edge of the drawing board, it permitted the drawing of perfectly straight lines by hand. They were fitted to a “T” or exactly. Now aren’t you glad you know that? Just thank your Goodie Store by buying stuff. All the usual goodies are available. For Goodie Store merchandise, contact Tom Sisson at meetings, or at 14537 Surrey Junction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685; Phone 209.296.5352; or e-mail targatom@volcano.net.

The last word by Bud Behrens

O

n April 5, five days after the deadline for the May issue of The Drifter, a full-page display ad was submitted by for inclusion in this issue. By the time the ad was received, all of the event ads, features, reviews, and columns had been edited and placed on the pages, except for the Secretary’s and Membership Director’s reports, which are exempted from the deadline. In other words, there was no space available for the ad; The Drifter was “full.” Deleting a half-page feature story and editing out 50 per cent of the ad so that it would occupy a half page was the compromise to this dilemma. Of course, some shuffling of material had to be done, too. This additional time-consuming process would not have occurred had the deadline policy of this newsletter been observed. (See page 1.) It might be well for those of you who will be chairing future events to turn to page 12 of this issue and read the first item under “New Business.” Now I think I’ll take a nap.
