appy New Year! I Yes, I am writing this on January 2nd because the deadline for The Drifter is one month before the month of publication so that I can send it to Bud in time for inclusion in this issue. We have successfully transisitioned to a new printer and mailing service. I would like to thank John Murphy and Bud Behrens for all their work in getting this done. Our former printing service was bought out by another firm, which then proceeded to double the price to produce The Drifter. This started the search for a new printer and mailing service. The Drifter is now being printed and mailed on a monthly basis and should be back on schedule with this issue. Thanks to you for bearing with us while the transition and other problems have been resolved. By the time this reaches you we will have had the SVR planning meeting. And knowing how our members come forth with ideas and offer to chair the events, we can look forward to another year that will include a variety of tours, dinners, and other excuses or reasons to come together (party). The Zone 7 Awards Banquet will be history and SVR members, as usual, will have walked away with their share of competition awards. The 2007 Zone 7 calendar is starting to look very good and will give us the opportunity to present concours, rally, and autocross events. The “Out of the Box” meeting will now be included as apart of the February 7th dinner meeting at Karen’s Bakery. Dianna Leight came up with a very good suggestion about the out of the box scenerio. Following up on her idea, there will be a suggestion box at each dinner meeting. This will provide our members the opportunity to attend the dinner meeting and bring up ideas, etc. which will then be looked at and talked about during the meeting. Of course, all suggestions will be considered either at the meeting or at a later board meeting. Speaking of board meetings, every member is welcome to attend them. The meetings are held at RPM on Bradshaw Road. Currently the date and times are being reviewed to make sure we can accommodate the schedules of the board members. If you would like to attend a board meeting, please let me know or check out the region calendar for the dates and times. I have received a volunteer request from KVIE regarding the Volunteer Incentive Program. This might result in SVR volunteering for the Art Auction or even at a pledge drive. More information will be available in the next few months. The SVR charity program has been very successful over the years. Through our charity auction with Kern and Cindi Breaux and the SVR members, we have been able to give the Ovarian Cancer Foundation a total of more than $15,000 during the last few years. Susan Fleming, our Charity Chair, has agreed to continue on in that position. She is arranging for some additional charity participation in 2007. We will continue with our e-mail notification of SVR and Zone events, and the information also will be on the SVR web page. If you are not receiving our e-mail notifications of events and announcements, please contact Rik Larson in order to be put on the list. And remember: this is all for fun and camaraderie.

Drifting back February 2007 by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (February 1977) Los Padres was the site of the February 4th dinner meeting. 128 SVR members and guests turned out for margueritas and enchiladas. Ralph Heath made a challenge to all owners of stock 356s to run against his Jaguar sedan at the upcoming “Son of Low Bucks” autocross. Randy Blaesi got the Dummkopf Award for being busted by the CHP while racing with El Presidenti. The February 6th “Son of Low Bucks” autocross chaired by Mike Willis in Northgate off Main Avenue and Kelton Way had the usual entry fee of $1.00 per run. Dave Neukom and Pat McLaughlin were chief event assistants. A huge turnout - 110 drivers participated. Worthies deserving special notice included Diane and Ted Colbert, Jim McDade, Darrel Overstreet, Al and Kathy King, Harvey Cain, Jim Boswell, Emmett Wilder, Gail Bates, and Connie and Rich Farlinger. Larry Wilson beat Ralph Heath in the side-bet stock 356 versus Jaguar sedan shootout. Beer at Lord Byron’s closed the day. “Rain Gods in Santa Cruz,” was the name given by Paul and Gail Bates to their February 19-21 three-day/two-night tour to Bolder Creek. Couples in 18 cars embarked confidently knowing they were armed with Gary Waldsmith’s great find of 10 gallons of wine. Among the group mentioned in the Drifter were Harvey and Linda Cain, Merle and Georgene Dodd, Art and Hortense Thornton, and Jim and Sheila McDade. After covering 225 miles in only 7 hours (lots of Porsche roads, only 11 miles of freeway), they reached Boulder Creek in time for wine drinking and a late dinner at Scopazzi’s. Tours of Carmel, Santa Cruz or Capitola followed the next day. It rained a lot.

Porsches. Afterward, social director Pam Harley said it was standing room-only because the advance advertising said, “We Have A Program!” Ken said his visit included a hair-raising indoctrination of the Weissach off-road course in a Paris-to-Dakar rally-prepared 911. “The Porsche test drivers are very good,” Ken said, “and confident too, since we didn’t wear helmets.” For the February 22 “Let’s Go Fly A Kite” tour, co-chaired by Ray and Sara Clements, but led by Ken and Marcella Mitchell when the Clements had to bow out, the ad said, “Pack a lunch, and kite. We are headed for the Sonoma coast.” And so it was, with a stop at General Vallejo’s home and a tour of the gardens and house, and then to Fort Ross and kite flying, or wine drinking, depending on the wind. The group tried their hand at a tour questionnaire, but was skunked by Mike and Vicki Willis. After consuming wine and a picnic lunch, the air began to move, so Don and Pam Harley, Mark and Suzanne Plantz, Jim and Sheila McDade, and Pat and Larry Wilson tried their hand with the kites, but were skunked by Marv and Marie Smith with their French Army kite. In the February DRIFTER, membership chair Bob Jacobson reported SVR membership stands at 289 regular members and 29 dual members. Bob Peake advertised a 1973 914-4 (2.0) with 48K miles for $9,000, more than twice the amount asked by Greg Peart for his 1975 914-4 (1.8).

20 Years Ago (February 1987) Big improvement for the February 12 dinner meeting at the Palomino Room - an actual program featuring a presentation by SVR-member Ken Smith (and staffer for the California Air Resources Board) on his visit to the Porsche factory and meeting with Helmuth Bott about the future of methanol-powered

10 Years Ago (February 1997) Drifter editor Mike Willis entertained his readers this month with a pithy description of new traffic laws created by the California legislature for 1997. Mike especially liked Senate Bill 1717 which required the DMV to automatically extend for 120 days a 90-day temporary drivers license for alien applicants Continued

whenever the Immigration and Naturalization Service is UNABLE to verify the applicant’s legal presence in the U.S. of A. Mike didn’t mention the bill author’s name, but one can hope that term limits ended this worthy’s political career. The February 5th Dinner Meeting at Cattlemen’s restaurant featured awards to the best him and her Western get-up. Social chair, Bob Peake, judged the entries. He said lots of him and her cowpokes showed up that night. Maybe it was the grub. Geehaa! Rik Larson mentioned in this month’s Drifter that Halloween costumes would be de rigueur for those attending the November Mendocino tour. “Those” thus far include Mike and Sue Ambrozewicz, Kirk and Linda Bradford, Ray and Sara Clements, Carol and Ira McKee, Kim and Jeff Kinder, John and Tina Murphy, Horace Searcie and Noreen Schnubnell, Gary and Alma Thompson, and John and Betty Meunier.

December 20, 2006 SVR board meeting by Kevin Dougherty

P

resident-Elect Mike Willis called the meeting to order at 6:45 P.M. In attendance were Jeff & Kim Kinder, Kim Nelson, Julia Lynn, John Murphy, Rik Larson, Helen Ashuckian, Betty & Ray Silva, Matt Deter, Cookie Anderson, Kevin Dougherty, Kern Breaux, Andy Leight, Dick MacFarlane. Absent and sorely missed: Tom Sisson. The November minutes taken by Julia Lynn were reviewed and approved. Old Business: Mike commented on the great Christmas party and thanked the members of the committee who put it together. The main reason for this meeting as a transition so that the old board could trade “stuff ” with the new board. A brainstorming meeting will be held on February 7, 2007 at 7 P.M. at RPM Motor Sports. All members of SVR are invited. New Business: Mike handed out the recently revised Policy Statements as well as SVR Income and Expense Forms and advised us that he would put these forms on Excel and e-mail them to the board. This will make it easier to fill them out. Board Member Reports: Membership Director (Rik Larson): Rik mentioned that someone needed to give National the new board information. Mike replied that would be done soon. More Drifters are needed by the Membership Director. A discussion ensued regarding the number of Drifters that should be printed each month; 850 will be printed for January but we need to know how many are now being printed and mailed to members and advertisers. It appears to be too little. We have run out of membership directories. They

are being updated and are scheduled to be reprinted in February. Competition (Matt Deter): Autocross at Mather Field appears out. Jeff mentioned that Sierra College has a new parking lot. Other possibilities include the old Army Depot, Lincoln Airport, and Franklin Field. Matt will check into these. Treasurer (Betty Silva): The club ended the year in fine shape. A discussion ensued regarding the Christmas party budget. Betty will run a summary and copies to Kim Nelson, Dennis Stettner and Jeff Kinder. Vice President (Andy Leight): Andy said good-bye and that it was a good ride overall. He then discussed a few bills that needed attention. Webmaster (John Murphy): The Drifter, Zone events and upcoming meetings are up on the web for all to see. Social Director (Julia Lynn): Julia discussed the e-mail blast list and updates. Rally Chair (Helen Ashuckian): Helen stated that a member inquired about the 2006 Zone Rally standings. She was told that Larry Sharp has that information. Past President (Kim Nelson): Kim and Rachel need the G-24 list. There were 225 members in G-24. He also said we should look at GGR’s e-mail newsletter. National and Bud want a paper newsletter. He reminded us that March 6, 2007 is the day to register for the 2007 Parade, which will be held in San Diego in July. President (Jeff Kinder): Jeff thanked the 2006 board members for their hard work. We thank you for yours, Jeff. Adjournment was at 8:12 P.M. The next meeting will be at RPM on January 17, 2007 at 7:00 P.M. Respectfully Submitted, Kevin R. Dougherty, 2006 Secretary

A Boxster tour Story and photos by Ed Littrell

O

riginally the Boxster was purchased for touring, so tour we did, to the “canyon country” of Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon National Parks. Marsha and I drove over the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the end of September and traveled down Highway 395, past Mammoth Mountain, to our first stop in Bishop, California. We spent one night in a B&B we liked there, and then we were off to the east through Westgard Pass on Highway 168. This is one of those “middle-of-nowhere” roads that are perfectly suited to Porsches. It’s about a 100-mile drive to the next intersection, which is with Highway 95. In between there’s mostly just space - no towns. Deep Springs College is in about the first third of the way, and a big cattle feedlot is in a watered valley at about the three-quarter’s spot. Use your discretion as to your driving style in between. There are three easy mountain passes to cross in this segment. From the intersection of highways 168 and 95 we headed south through the open roads of the Great Basin. Signs of civilization were few and far between. From Beatty to Las Vegas things thickened up a bit until we reached the bright lights of Las Vegas. After we spent the night we were off again on the 75 mph-speed-limit I-15 freeway to Utah. There were two near disasters! The first was a tie-down strap off a flat bed truck lying in the road right in front of me at 75 mph! Annd there was a car to the right! Luckily, I was able to slow down and pull over after the car on the right passed me with about twenty feet to go. Calming down from that encounter, I ran over a rock, throwing it up against the underpan of the car. I pulled off at an exit to check, and everything was OK. There were no more surprises on the way to Zion National Park in Utah. Arriving at the park, we cruised around with the top down for the rest of the day. Conditions were perfect for traveling through the Park to our B&B in Kanab. This was our base for the next five days as we revisited Zion, went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and then to Bryce Canyon National Park.

Conditions were a little cool, but this encouraged the trees to start their color changes. The afternoons were warm enough for top-down cruising. No other Boxsters or even more than one Porsche was to be seen, except in Las Vegas. A den of about twenty Vipers was on tour at Zion, however. There were not too many of the dreaded motor homes, but there were a lot of rental PT Cruisers. Visitors from other countries, especially Germany, were common, but there were no comments on the Porsche from them. There were also a lot of motorcyclists. It was plenty cool for them in the mornings, too. One biker was from Houston where it was 90 and 90 - ninety degrees Fahrenheit and ninety percent humidity. We finished up the scenic part of our trip by diverting to Nevada’s “Valley of Fire” state park on our way to Las Vegas. It was another good driving experience having the beautiful red rocks towering around us. The Boxster had plenty of trunk space for us. However, the car is a little confining on the road with the top up. Cruising around the national parks with the top down made up for the interstate miles, though. It sure is a different car when the top is down, especially in the wide-open spaces of the southwest. I was apprehensive about being in the boonies in a car that not everyone could fix if something went wrong. But the only mechanical problem occurred in Las Vegas as we were leaving there on our return. I wanted to cruise the strip. So I did, going west toward home. But, in front of the Luxor, a piece of concrete jumped out and blew out the sidewall of the left front tire. Three hours and two tires later, (needed two to match) we were on our way again. The only trouble on the trip, and it was in town. I had had enough of the twisties by then, so it was a long slog on freeways back to Sacramento, about eight hours of driving at normal speeds. It was either make the long drive or spend the night in Barstow or Bakersfield. Driving was a better choice. All in all, it was a good tour in a wonderful driving machine.

Autocrossing with the PCA by Cameron Lloyd, BMWCCA, Sacramento Chapter

T

here are lots of reasons why people should take up autocrossing. I’m not going to go into those since that topic has been done to death by far more experienced drivers than I. Rather, I am new to performance driving and here to say that, for someone looking to begin performance driving in the Sacramento area, there is no better venue, so well run, by a more welcoming group than a PCA SVR autocross. And for those of you who didn’t notice my club affiliation, I am a Bimmerphile. I’d been to a couple autocrosses before finding out about the PCA events through the Sacramento BMW Club website. After contacting event chair Matt Deter to register, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much run time everyone got. At an SCCA event, everyone was in either a morning or afternoon group, where they got no more than three runs of one lap each. A smaller Sacramento group (I forget who) gave people three runs with two timed laps each. For the same price as the other groups, the PCA gave everyone a morning and afternoon session of four runs with two laps (one warm-up and the second timed) and sometimes three! Even at the immensely large event held at Infineon, everyone got four runs of the normal 1+1 lap format. Driving time is great, and the value is certainly something to keep coming back for. What is most impressive is the assistance extended to beginning drivers. At the start of each day, chief instructor Steve Nieslony leads a guided walk of the track with experienced analysis and advice for all the beginning drivers. Afterwards, all of the beginners are paired with an instructor. Mine gave me a huge amount of helpful advice that allowed me to shave precious seconds off my time. When I introduced my girlfriend to the group, the instructor was provided for her. They spent their time between runs with a map of the course, the instructor explaining the basics of racing concepts such as “the line”, what the apex of a turn is, etc. He went through the strate-

gies for each section of the course and why, and did everything to get her comfortable with hard driving for the first time. Comfort and fun really are what this group is about. Sure, as a BMW driver, my M Coupe and pretty much any non-Porsche of lesser marquee than Lotus or Corvette get called some friendly names (“grocery getter”, “shoe box”, “station wagon”, and “nonsporting group.” the last of which is just plain unfair). But it is all in good fun, and this ribbing seems to be directly proportional to how well they are doing. There is not enough room to sing the praises of these events. Suffice it to say that I am hooked. I have been so pleased to be welcomed by your group (even when I lose my gas cap and slosh fuel all over the track or nearly slide over the timing light - sorry about that last one) that I roped in two other people (one them a PCA member who was hesitant about taking his Boxster to the events) and have since gotten them hooked. Autocrossing is already exciting and addicting. When an event is this well run, I cannot possibly imagine a better introduction to motor sports. Note: SVR invites the Sacramento BMW Club to autocross with us at our region (non-zone) events. A member of the BMW club who participated in several of SVR’s autocrosses during 2006 wrote this article for publication in both clubs’ newsletters. SVR members should take note that they too can bring their “other cars” out to our events.

Porsche Parade in San Diego in July by Rik Larson

The 52nd Porsche Parade will be held the first week in July. Just imagine seeing the fireworks on the 4th of July at Sea World and then enjoying a big banquet on an aircraft carrier on the 5th. What is the Porsche Parade? More details are at www.pca.org/parade/2007. The short version is that it is a weeklong event for PCA members (like a convention) but more fun. They have competitive events (concours, rally, autocross, tech quiz, etc.) as well as social events and dinners. And it is being held in a wonderful location: San Diego. The January issue of the PANORAMA contained information about this annual event. More details are available at their web site. Registration opens on March 6th. It is possible that this Parade will sell out in the first couple of days of registration. Parade 2006 in Portland last year had approximately 900 cars. The best way to register is on-line. Make sure that you already have access to your membership information at www. pca.org and it will go a lot easier. You can also register by mail on March 6th. If you do register by mail, you will need to obtain (download or request) the paper document (30+ pages). More than 90% of the entrants registered on-line last year.

The ultimate suspension – part I by Lisa Thomas, SVR Technical Chair

A

fter adding “H&R” sport springs to the Boxster a while back, I decided I needed to upgrade the suspension on my C4. I was really hesitant facing this project though, since I spent what seemed like weeks removing the Boxster’s bumpers, corner panels, and practically the engine in order to put them on. My first step was to decide what I wanted to achieve, which included: • Reduced body roll • Improved turn-in • Increased road holding • Decreased acceleration squat and brake dive • A lower, better-appearing car The next step was research. A number of companies out there offer suspension packages for Porsches, and given the budget I had, I came up with following list of options: • Bilstein dampers and H&R springs (the sport springs made for the 964) • Koni dampers (adjustable yellow) and Eibach springs (the Pro Kit stuff ) • Boge dampers and H&R springs (I’m not exactly sure which springs) • Koni dampers (again, the yellow ones) and original Porsche 964RS springs But, once the work starts, what is it they say about the plan? And the budget that went with it! Ground Control is a small company in Shingle Springs that handcrafts suspension components to specification. Whether you are a pro-racer or participate in the local drivers education programs, Ground Control will engineer complete coil over conversions that adjust with one hand. They also make beautiful fully-adjustable camber/caster plates. Everything is tuned to your driving style and to your body as you sit in the car. They have all this “techy” information such as spring rate-to-weight ratios, and if the car is tracked, they can tune it for specific tracks. So the plan changed, and we were talking spring rates with Ground Control and were working towards 440 front springs (with Koni adjustable sport struts), and 600 rears. Here is a picture of the new stuff upon arrival and going in.

We ended up with was the Koni sport adjustable shocks, with 500lb front and 700lb rear springs. That is the same as the 996 Cup car! It is jarring on the street, but I can change those numbers without further breaking the bank, and I haven’t had a chance to track it since the clutch decided to fail. What follows is a DIY procedure for the installation. Please note many steps in this procedure are risky due to the nature of preloaded springs, and that you will be working under a 3000lb vehicle for most of this procedure. Make all attempts to maintain a safe environment and utilize what any mechanically savvy person would call “common sense.” List of materials: • New shocks, springs, and a good attitude • Latex gloves (full box) • Two floor jacks • Jack stands (at least one pair) • Wood blocks (several 6in. pieces of 2x4) • Ratchet/Socket assortment (either 3⁄8 or 1⁄2 inch drive) • Metric wrench assortment • Screwdriver assortment • Pry bar (aka “attitude adjuster”) Special tools: • 10mm Allen socket with 1⁄2 inch drive. (You will need it to remove the large Allen bolts that secure the front shocks to the wheel carrier which are normally a bi--h to remove.) • 1/2-inch drive wrench and a length of pipe to put over it for increased leverage • Impact wrench (Not required but helpful in removing the lower bolts that secure the rear shocks to the trailing arms and in bolting down the “hats” via the shock shaft that are otherwise difficult to secure while tightening the large nylock nut.) • Spring compressor (not necessarily the Porsche compressor; any that is available at your local auto parts store is fine.) • Old comforters/blankets (2) Keep in mind that while you may be able to scoot the floor jack under the car prior to lowering, you have to retrieve that jack once you’re finished. Suggestion: Make a set of four 1ft-long 2x8 pieces. Once you’re finished with the front installation, and before lowering the vehicle, place one of these pieces under each tire. Do the same at the rear when you have finished with it. Installation Procedure for front shocks/springs: 1. Jack up the car. You can jack one side or both; it won’t matter because you can only do one side at a time. Secure the vehicle with jack stands, NOT on any suspension point, for obvious reasons. 2. Disconnect brake line retainers, the encapsulated speed sensor for your ABS and anything else that uses the shock housing as a mounting point. You will have to separate the fittings for your brake lines where the rigid line meets the flexible rubber

12

one. Tip: This is a good time to upgrade to SS (stainless steel) braided brake hoses. 3. Assemble the brake lines for the meantime so as not to drain your master cylinder and consequently leave brake fluid all over the floor. You will still have to bleed your brakes when installation of the front struts/springs is complete.

6. Open the front trunk and unsnap and pull back the carpeting in the vicinity of the shock you will be removing. There are four nuts surrounding a large one. Remove the four smaller nuts with a 13mm socket; remove the washers, too. Leave the larger nut in place for now. 7. Slowly release the pre-load on the strut/wheel-carrier assembly, remembering that the upper part of the strut assembly is no longer connected to the vehicle. You should be able to lower the carrier assembly all the way down to full extension without any problem. 8. Remove the sway bar link. (I changed the front and rear bars to 20mm and 24mm respectively. There goes the budget again!) 9. Once the strut assembly has been completely released from the shock tower and the wheel carrier is at full extension, remove the 10mm Allen bolts completely, being sure to catch the nuts/washers (were there washers?) off the ends of them. (Guess why.) 10. Here is a photo of mine after removal.

4. Here’s where you grab your biggest 1/2-inch drive wrench and 10mm Allen socket. Attempt the removal of the two 10mm Allen bolts that secure the front struts to the wheel carrier. Don’t remove bolts all the way; just break them loose. Note: these two bolts are responsible for your camber adjustment when aligning the front end. This is a good thing to know. As you loosen them, your wheel carrier will likely adjust itself to the most positive camber side of the adjustment; this is okay. The car must be aligned after this procedure.

5. Support the wheel carrier, using a floor jack with a block of wood atop the saddle and placed it under the “hat” of the brake rotor and pre-load the carrier a little. The next step will require this action as you release the top support mechanism for the strut/spring assembly. You don’t want it to fall and damage your wheel carrier assembly or fender well.

11.The next steps are included in case you have purchased complete struts and are putting them on. I just needed to get everything off and take them to Ground Control. Of course, they would have done all this for a price (i.e., the sway bars). Use the impact wrench to remove the nut retaining the hat assembly. A spring compressor is not needed for the front shocks but will be for the rears. 12. Once the hat has been removed from the original shock/ strut assembly ,set aside the various washers, spacers, rubber bumper, etc. in the order of removal. Remove the spring and unscrew the spring perch from the body of the shock. Transfer the spring perch to the new shock assembly. (This is not necessary if your new shocks already have the perches, but some shocks do not come with perches – the Bilsteins for my SC, for example.) However, your originals will be completely reusable and likely will

compatible with your new shock. Note: If you are using lowering springs from H & R, there should be a note inside the box describing how to obtain the proper bumpers or trim your own. I followed the guidelines for trimming from the originals. For a Porsche C2 or C4 you will need to trim off 3⁄4 inch. Unless you ordered new boots, you will be using your originals. Assemble the new shock/strut/spring assembly as your original factory unit was. Be sure the spring perch is installed correctly with the flat part down, the offset facing upward. Orient the spring per the instructions provided, a step especially important for progressive-rate springs. 13. Navigate your new unit into the wheel well, inserting the top end first. (This photo was made during removal.) Then install the four 10mm nuts that secure the assembly to the top strut mount; hand tighten only at this point. 14. Using a floor jack, position the wheel carrier to a point where the holes line up for the two large Allen bolts that secure the bottom of the strut assembly to the carrier. Install the lower Allen bolt with the corresponding nut and hand tighten only.

15. Notice that at the bottom of the assembly the upper Allen bolt provides camber adjustability and that the lower just holds everything together. Using the floor jack, adjust the wheel carrier assembly so that the upper Allen bolt is pretty much in the middle of its adjustment range. Torque both Allen bolts to 100 ft lbs. (Since I run my car on the track quite a bit, I put 150 ft lbs of torque on the Aleen bolts after I had the car machine aligned. Do not use an impact wrench on these bolts! 16. Separate the brake line and place the applicable support tab on the strut assembly. Install the speed sensor/ABS sensor harness/wiring at their proper locations. Tip: The plastic retainers that connect the speed/ABS sensor wiring to the strut assemble have a removable “apple core” of sort. With the “core: pushed out or removed from the plastic retainer, press the retainer into position. Once there, press the core in to hold the retainer in place. Important: remember that you had to separate the brake lines to properly install the front strut assemblies, so you will have to bleed your brake system. While installation of the rear shocks does not require separation of the brake lines, you begin at the right rear whell when bleeding the system. Next issue: Part II - rear shock/spring removal and installation

Place one lug nut on the lug closest to the 12 o’clock position. Use a 19mm deep socket and 1⁄2-inch ratchet as a lever and muscle the wheel carrier up until the second Allen bolt hole lines up. Place the other Allen through and hand tighten with the corresponding nut on the end. Tighten and torque the four 10mm nuts to 27ft lbs.

ome of our contributors have submitted articles or event ads with photos and/or graphics embedded in them. This does not work well in the world of desktop publishing, where column widths vary and where it is often necessary to manipulate or move photos to appropriate locations relative to the text. In addition to that consideration, most photos must be “enhanced” individually by resizing and/or adjusting the brightness and contrast of each. Otherwise they appear too dark or “contrasty” when printed. If you would like to submit and article for publication in The Drifter, here are some tips: 1. Create a text file without any imbedded photos or graphics. Photo captions(always desirable) may be placed at the end of the text. 2. Place native photos (jpegs without enhancement or resizing) or graphics in a folder, along with the text file. 3. Compress the contents of the folder with a file compression program such as WinZip (Windows users) or Stuffit (Mac users). 4. Send the folder containing the text and photos to The Drifter editor as an attachment to an e-mail message. SVR member Ed Littrell submitted this month’s cover photo and the article “A Boxster Tour” with accompanying photos. And he did it the right way - by sending the text and photos separately. Thanks, Ed. Contributions to The Drifter by our members are welcome and encouraged. Please contact the editor either by e-mail or by telephone if you have questions regarding the above.
