Where did the summer go? I hope you joined us for an event or a Cars & Coffee this year. I didn't make as many as I had hoped. Both alternative car weekends in August had a nice selection of non-Porsches, and turnout keeps growing. Lionel Neff and his Activities Committee (always looking for help) have provided some great outings. Thanks, Lionel!

Looking back: the Drive and Dine to Vega Vineyards was an overwhelming success. Monterey Car Week is always fun, but only a few braved the crowds. I also toured the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in eastern Ventura County with the R.U.F. group, where rescue dogs are paired with handlers to find disaster survivors. Our group, plus money approved by the Board, donated $2,000.

Ilise McClary has stepped up to chair a new party and events committee and will take over our December Holiday Party. She'll need help. VP Bill Hallier and I saw this work in other Regions and wanted to try it. Thanks, Ilise! The Ladies group will be led by Brigitte Trapp, with help from Sue Kinsling and Gloria Hallier. Their outings will be short and won't conflict with regular activities. Thanks, Brigitte!

Looking forward: the Sierra Alpine Passes Excursion should be a great trip with amazing scenery. Look for details on Porsche Santa Barbara's Oktoberfest on September 19. Always a fun event! Then think Concours: our 46th, on October 11 at the beautiful Camarillo Ranch. Thank you to Porsche Santa Barbara, our major sponsor, and to Chair Tara Konrath!

What a summer! So many highlights and milestones to talk about.

Welcome to the September-October edition of Der Auspuff, featuring up front a beautiful shot from our beloved Cars & Coffee event, taken by none other than Bill Hallier. Excellent framing, Bill!

few days after the race I sat down with Rene Verbrugge, Porsche Santa Barbara Sales Manager, who once again proved to be a gracious and generous host - this

And what were some of those logistics required to put on such an event? The basics: five viewing screens, including one life-size at the main showroom entrance, enough banquet tables so that everyone could sit, eat and talk about all things Porsche while viewing the race. For Rene, however, it began with getting up at 3:30 a.m. so he could arrive at the dealership by 5:15 a.m. to meet the scheduled delivery of authentic French breakfast items, coffee and fresh orange juice (a fan favorite!) from Renaud’s bakery. The event was scheduled to Andres Bergsneider

start at 6:00 a.m. to coincide with the start of the race, but members started showing up at 5:30 a.m.

Luckily, Rene’s seven staff members were also there by 5:30 a.m. to start directing pedestrian and Porsche traffic. But how could a busy Porsche dealership accommodate parking for so many members with so few staff? As Rene described it, the big move occurred Friday night: in one hour, five of his staff moved approximately 100 cars from the main lot into the basement and service lanes. One staff member was designated as the “key master” to oversee the handling of 100 ignition keys to some of the finest automobiles in the world. Remarkably, Rene and his staff had all cars returned to their appropriate spaces by late Saturday afternoon so that regular business could be conducted.

And how did the staff feel about the long day and all these Porsche people in their showroom? According to Rene, his salespeople were all very appreciative and said how nice it was to spend time with club members in a non-sales atmosphere. They had to be here early anyway because of the event, so they also got to hang out with Porsche car lovers!

And they still had their regular work to do taking care of Porsche customers.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS, ONE IDEA First run in 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the oldest endurance race still running and one of the most prestigious. It belongs to two unofficial triple crowns: the Triple Crown of Motorsport, with the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500, and the Triple Crown of Endurance, with the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. The format sets it apart. Most races are fixed distance, won by the car that covers it fastest. Le Mans goes to whichever car covers the most ground in twenty-four hours.

Drivers skipped their harnesses to save seconds, then fought to buckle in at speed, or ran without belts at all. Several were killed in the bunched opening laps.

That start left its mark on the cars we drive. Porsche moved the ignition switch to the left of the steering wheel so a driver could fire the engine with his left hand while his right found first gear, saving a few tenths.

Porsche remains the most successful manufacturer at Le Mans: 19 overall wins, seven straight from 1981 to 1987, and 108 class victories.

We continued on Highway 33, merging onto Highway 166 North. As specified in the driving directions, at mile marker 79 three of the five groups exited right onto Hudson Ranch Road, while two groups bypassed the turnoff and took a short scenic tour. Upon entering Hudson Ranch Road, we found 24 uninterrupted miles of mind-altering curves, and this is where and when our Porsches displayed their worth. Curves, curves, and more curves of every shape and description! One had to be aware of the involuntary “smile cramps” that adorned the drivers’ faces. Our speedy ascent took us from the Cuyama Valley floor at 3,000 feet to the Pine Mountain community at approximately 6,000 feet.

At 102 glorious miles we reached the Pine Mountain Summit, where the Pine Mountain Club appeared on our left. There was plenty of parking for all 57 Porsches, every one of which made it to our destination without incident. Within the Pine Mountain Club is the Condor Restaurant, where a private luncheon awaited our hungry group with our preselected choices: hamburger, Impossible Burger for the veggie folk, chicken sandwich, or BLT, all served with fries and a choice of beverages.

Recognition of our new club members took place after the luncheon. The new members recognized were Daniel Bruzzone, Kelly Clark, Camille Cocjin-Mangubat, Ken Hayes, John Sullivan, and Christian Zapata. Each received a laudatory reception and a free club mug and hat.

I can only state, with a smidgeon of humility, that this was a total Porsche enthusiast BLAST, replete with a lot of Porsches, a host of Porsche enthusiasts, a good meal and host, and, most of all, the SBR members who are always the “life of the party.” Thanks to all who participated. This was one for the personal memory record books!

The SBR Sierra Alpine Passes Excursion September 14–17, 2026

his event will rival any of the Porsche Alpine Road tours in Europe. It will be limited to 15 hotel rooms for TSierra individuals who are extreme mountain pass enthusiasts. We have four days and three nights to explore Mountain passes, and more. Day one takes us from Santa Barbara to Oakhurst, into Yosemite, and over Tioga Pass. On the second day we will experience Monitor Pass, Ebbetts Pass, Railtown 1897, and Sonora Pass. And on day three we will go by Grant Lake and June Lake to Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest.

The first two nights we’ll stay at Walker River Lodge in Bridgeport and the third night at the historic Dow Villa Motel in Lone Pine. On day four we head home.

991 DIY NOTES Story by Steve Geldman

Beyond performance and style, Porsche’s success has long been tied to reliability. Yet every generation seems to have its Achilles’ heel. The 996/986 became infamous for IMS bearing failures, while the 997/987 faced potential bore scoring concerns, among others. For the 991/981 generation, the complaints are generally less severe, including warped upper door panels and headlight delamination. Mostly cosmetic, these issues still have a way of appearing when least expected. Recently, this author discovered another gremlin lurking within his 991.

During last April’s SBR Monterey trip, I was leading roughly a dozen cars on Highway 101 when I lowered the driver’s window. Suddenly, as if spring-loaded, the window switch tab launched upward, flew directly in front of my face, and landed on the floor mat between my legs. The window continued lowering until fully open, leaving me with deafening wind noise and no way to raise it again. Because I was leading the group, pulling off the freeway was not particularly appealing. After nearly ten minutes of frustration and increasing hearing loss from the rushing air, I began feeling around the floor mat with one hand while steering with the other, hoping to locate the tiny plastic tab. My plan was to somehow reinstall it into the switch cavity and get the window closed. A two-night hotel stay with a permanently open Porsche window was hardly ideal.

Eventually, I found the tab and carefully worked it back into place, restoring operation long enough to raise the window, all while still driving. I would strongly advise against attempting the same maneuver. Once the window was up, I knew better than to touch the switch again until I could investigate the problem properly.

As it turns out, this is yet another common 991/981 issue. Over time, fatigue develops in a small molded plastic cylinder inside the switch assembly, eventually preventing the tab from staying secured. Unfortunately, fixing it requires replacing the entire switch module, which also controls the side mirrors. And that is where this tech article begins.

Having a Porsche dealer perform this repair will typically cost between $700 and $800. As a DIY project, however, the expense is limited primarily to the replacement switch module itself, approximately $250 delivered through Suncoast Parts, plus one to two hours of labor in your own garage. As with any repair, genuine Porsche OEM replacement parts are strongly recommended -Steve

THE REPAIR. The procedure is relatively straightforward for those with moderate mechanical ability. Accessing the switch module requires removal of the driver’s door panel to disconnect the switch module electrical connector and release its four metal retaining tabs from the rear.

Do not attempt to pry the switch module out from the top side of the panel. It must be released from inside the door panel.

Required Parts - Driver’s Switch Module: Porsche Part # 991-613-151-02-DML.

Provided the battery is reconnected soon after the repair completion, no vehicle memory settings will be lost. After disconnecting the battery, allow approximately 20 minutes for any stored electrical energy to dissipate before proceeding.

Step 2: Preparing the Door Panel for Removal. Using a trim removal tool, remove the small trim cover located behind the interior door pull handle. Remove the exposed T30 Torx screw and set both pieces aside.

Required Tools - 10mm socket wrench, Trim removal tools, including an angled pick tool, T30 Torx driver, Loctite Blue 242 thread locker.

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery. Using a 10mm socket wrench, disconnect the negative battery terminal. This step is important because the side airbag connector will be disconnected during the repair. Failure to disconnect the battery beforehand will trigger an airbag warning message on the instrument cluster upon reassembly.

Next, remove the triangular trim panel near the side mirror. Begin lifting from the lower left edge. Rotate the trim clockwise to release a lower hidden retaining hook, molded and part of this trim piece. Once disengaged, remove the trim and set it aside.

Behind the airbag trim cover is a blue airbag connector. Depress the blue locking tab, then lift the magenta release arm to separate the connector.

Remove the two exposed T30 Torx screws securing the door panel. Set the airbag trim cover and two screws aside.

Locate the airbag trim cover, identified by the molded airbag symbol. Carefully work a trim tool around the perimeter to release the five retaining clips and remove the cover.

At the upper rear edge of the door panel, remove the cover using a trim removal tool. This is held in place with two internal top/bottom plastic tabs. Use a T30 Torx and remove the exposed screw. Place both the screw and panel aside.

The door panel can now be fully removed.

Place it on a clean blanket or padded surface to avoid damage.

Next, release the remaining lower tabs from the underside of the switch. Once all four tabs are disengaged, remove the switch module from the front side of the panel.

Step 3: Switch Module Removal and Replacement. From the rear side of the door panel, disconnect the switch module electrical connector by depressing the release tab and carefully pulling the connector free.

Removing the Door Panel. Using both hands, firmly grasp the door panel and lift upward to release it from its inside retaining clips. At this stage, do not pull the panel completely away from the door frame as it is being retained by the door latch assembly.

Tilt the top of the panel outward approximately six inches. While supporting the panel with one hand, compress the white Bowden cable retainer and disconnect it from the latch assembly. Rotate the cable clockwise to release the smaller white retaining tab at the cable end.

Install the new switch module in reverse order of removal.

The switch module is retained by four metal locking tabs. Using an angled pick tool, release the two upper retaining tabs through the access openings in the panel. The upper edge of the switch module should begin separating slightly from the panel face.

When reinstalling the fasteners, tighten them securely but avoid overtightening. Application of a medium-strength thread locker such as Loctite Blue 242 is recommended.

Finally, reconnect the vehicle battery.

Final Thoughts. Although this repair may initially appear intimidating, especially for first-time DIYers, it is entirely manageable with patience, the proper tools and careful attention to detail.

Completing the repair yourself not only restores proper function but can also save several hundred dollars in labor costs. —Steve

ur distinguished troupe of wine and food connoisseurs gathered at 10:00 a.m. at our launch point in Santa Barbara at the Habit Burger parking lot. At 10:15 the pre-drive instructions were given. At 10:30 the 45 Porsches and 80 participants joined their assigned groups and started their journey.

Upon departure, the drivers and their passengers were immediately greeted by warm weather, great serpentine roads and divine scenery on our way toward our destination. Our drive took us over the San Marcos Pass on Hwy 154 past Lake Cachuma, then onward to Los Olivos. Once having passed through Los Olivos, we turned left onto Foxen Canyon to Ballard Canyon. Our spirited drive took us past resplendent rows of manicured vineyards. Eventually, our drive took us through Solvang then onto Alisal Road a beautiful, tree-lined, curvaceous treat. At the end of Alisal Road we transitioned onto the Old 101 route. After which our group of Porsches entered Hwy 101 N. for a short sprint to Santa Rosa Road where we originally planned to exit, only to find the exit was closed due to construction. This unexpected diversion caused us to extend our drive to Hwy 246 which was the next exit. To get back on track, we made a left turn over Hwy 101 to Avenue of the Flags in Buellton where we turned left. Within one mile of exiting Hwy 101, we were entering the storybook farm, ranch, vineyard, and gourmet kitchen known as Vega Vineyards located in the Santa Rita Hills above Buellton, and home to the historical Zorro story of early California Days gone by.

Ensconced in the Santa Rita Hills above Buellton, Vega Vineyards beckons one and all to its charming farm-to-table gourmet restaurant, with its row after row of vines producing prize winning Italian vintage wines. Upon arrival, we were greeted and ushered into a specially prepared patio area. We were seated family style at wooden tables shaded by a large trellis and oak trees to protect us from the summer sun. There were fabulous vintage vines which produced the “nectar of the gods” provided to complement our meal paired with the following gourmet fare:

Starting with a beet and Caesar salad straight from Vega’s farm-to-table farm.

Main course from Vega’s on-site kitchen: A generous portion of salmon and/or short ribs served family style, generously paired with Vega’s Sparkling, Rose, Pinot and Dal Prado wines. Both wine and food quality were beyond compromise.

After our spectacular lunch and wine pairing, Demetre, the owner of Vega, took our group on an impressive private tour of the entire enterprise which included the farm-to-table grow fields, the farm animal collection, the vineyards and the wine tasting gift shop. This was not your usual drive and dine event. This event had all the makings of memories not soon forgotten. It was indeed a pleasure to bring this event to all those who attended.
