Wow, it’s September already! Caroline and I just returned from a couple of days at Monterey Car Week. We stayed with other club members at Asilomar, which kept us away from the biggest crowds.
Werks Reunion on Friday did not disappoint. For a Porsche enthusiast, the excitement is like Disneyland for kids. Every model, year, and color was on display, parked across the golf course by model. Porsche even brought a sample of the 70th Anniversary edition, a beautiful blue 911T. About 3,500 PCA members, myself included, entered for a chance to buy one. Only 70 will be built, and I heard that one of them is going to a member of our own Club.
After Werks, we visited the Mecum auction, which was conveniently nearby. Mecum was a blast because of the huge variety of cars on display, both before and after they went across the auction block.
That evening, we headed to Carmel for a delicious Italian dinner at Little Napoli’s, arranged by your Activities Chair, Lionel Neff. Once again, the streets were filled with exotic cars at every turn.
Saturday was all about Laguna Seca with the historic races, paddock cruising, and more people watching. Zak Brown, of F1 fame, drove in three races. I learned that he spent some of his early years driving at Jim Hall Kart Racing in Ventura. We made the hike up to the Corkscrew for its iconic view of the track, then hit the road for a quick four-and-a-half-hour drive home with minimal traffic.
Recently, I was on the annual Porsche Club of America Presidents call with 115 other Region Presidents from across the country. PCA asked all Regions to celebrate the 70th anniversary on September 13. Our Region will take part with a drive after our Santa Barbara Cars & Coffee. The very first PCA meeting 70 years ago had only 12 members. Today PCA has grown to 165,000 members. During the call, our own Past President, Rod Hersberger, was recognized for his service on the National Audit
Committee. No, he wasn’t one of the original 12! Thank you, Rod, for your continued contributions.
Looking ahead, Porsche Santa Barbara has invited us to a special evening called Heritage and Horsepower, featuring displays of 911s from across the generations. The event will take place on September 20, from 6 to 9 pm. Please RSVP when you receive the email from our Club Secretary, Doreen Shinn. Be careful, it just might tempt you into buying another 911—old or new!
Thanks to the Board and volunteers for all you do. Keep an eye out for details on the upcoming Board Elections. Please consider getting involved, and remember to support our sponsors.
—President Steve
"Shockingly possible" Pictured above is your editor holding the rear left strut assembly of his 981 Cayman (Otto). With patience, some research, and a sharpie, anything is possible with these cars. The 981 now sits on fresh Bilstein B6s on all four corners, with strut mounts and drive shafts fully rebuilt. Get out and wrench!
It has been a busy couple of months for me!. Sharpening my Adobe InDesign skills and giving my 981 some much-needed TLC. Shoutout to my girlfriend for her immense patience putting up with all this. Luckily, she’s a Porsche enthusiast too.
In exciting news, our very own Der Auspuff, with Dennis Power at the wheel, has crossed the finish line in first place of The Betty Jo Turner Award for Newsletter Excellence. Each year, PCA National hosts a competition to recognize the best regional magazines across the country. Regions are grouped by size—similar to racing classes—and submissions are judged on everything from layout and design to photography, technical writing, and member features. I’m thrilled to share that Der Auspuff earned first place in its category this year at the Porsche Parade. It’s a national award, judged by top editors from across the country, no small feat. Perhaps Dennis will be on the judging panel next year! I certainly have big shoes to fill.
Looking ahead, I’m hoping to feature one of our members’ cars on the cover of our November/December issue. If you would like your Porsche considered, send me an email (editor.pcasbr@outlook.com) along with a photo (of your car, selfies won't help). The cover shoot will take place in Santa Barbara and should take about an hour.
Our recent events have also been a joy to follow. From Lionel Neff’s closeto-nature outing at Big Bear to our biennial New Member Recognition Event where pioneers of the club mingled with our newest members, it’s been one success after another. As the year winds down, there is still plenty to look forward to across all departments of our club. I am especially excited for the Concours d’Elegance event, now that my eyes have been properly (and perhaps permanently) recalibrated by Monterey Car Week once again.
As I continue to learn and grow in this role, I am grateful for the support, feedback, and enthusiasm from our community. This magazine is a reflection of all of you, and I look forward to sharing more of your stories, your cars, and your passion for Porsche in the issues ahead.
Want to talk Porsche? Comments? Article ideas? Please send me an email. I would love to hear from you.

Porsches led the way, but people made it special. Through hikes, dinners, and lakeside views, this weekend getaway proved SBR drives are about more than just the road.
Story Lionel Neff
Photography Lionel Neff & Michael Krauchi
At 8:30 a.m. on June 22, 12 gleaming Porsches converged in the Target parking lot in Moorpark, CA. Despite the cool morning, enthusiasm buzzed among the 25 participants. Our team—Doreen Shinn, Doreen Pankow and Dori Neff—handled waivers and dinner tickets while I led a quick pre-drive briefing.
By 9:00 a.m., engines fired up and we rolled out, cheered on by curious onlookers. From Moorpark, we cruised east via Highway 23 and Highway 118, then merged onto Highway 405, Interstate 5 North, and Highway 14. We regrouped near Pearblossom Highway, once ominously dubbed “Blood Alley,” now a safer and smoother ribbon of tarmac.
Sixty miles in, we turned left onto Highway 395 and paused at Walmart, our planned rest stop. I always try to pick spots with roomy parking and clean facilities, a small but appreciated detail. Recharged, we climbed into the mountains via Highway 18. With sharp turns, steep grades, and some 10 mph warnings, highway boredom is not in one’s lexicon. It felt tailor-made for Porsches. However, for the unsuspecting passengers, it was 30 miles of white knuckles and imaginary passenger brake pedals.
At a scenic crest, Big Bear Lake appeared like a mirage. By noon, we reached our base: The Lodge at Holiday Inn was our home for two nights. Though unusual, they allowed early check-in for our group of 15 rooms. When you reserve 15 rooms at a time, it does, in fact, provide enough clout to ask for favors. Once checked in, most of us wandered into the Village for food and shopping before regrouping at 5:00 p.m. for our next adventure, a sunset cruise on the Miss Liberty paddle wheeler.
How we all arrived at the dock in time for our cruise is, to this day, a source of amusement—especially with all the distractions offered while walking through the Village’s many shops: not dissimilar to herding cats. Somehow, someway, as shown in our group photos, we arrived at the right place on time.
The 90-minute sunset cruise offered crisp air, golden light, and peaceful lake views. Even if our captain's narration was a bit... hard to follow, the setting more than made up for it. Everyone settled into a state of contentment and all seemed well in the world. The uphill walk back to the hotel ended in the bar, where stories were exchanged over drinks.
"Highway boredom is not in one’s lexicon."
The morning of June 23, we met for breakfast and then caravanned to Snow Summit, which had transformed into a mountain biking haven. Chairlifts were modified to carry two mountain bikes to the top, while the bikers are swept up the mountain in the next chairlift. We rode the chairlift to 9,000 feet and hiked a scenic loop (carefully avoiding the bike trails) led by Doreen Pankow. Depending on how much dust one kicked up, the hike was between 1.5 and 2.0 miles. After soaking in the views, we descended back down the chairlift, enjoying a bird’s eye view of the mountain bikers, Big Bear Village, and the Lake.
At 6:00 p.m. we all gathered at Stillwell’s, the hotel dining room, for our group dinner. This gastronomical fantasmagoria consisted of a salad with your choice of dressing, a main course of salmon, chicken, prime rib, or a vegetarian plate, followed by a dessert of New York cheesecake. Overall, a double-fisted thumbs up for the food and service. Again, after dinner, the customary pilgrimage to the bar occurred. A cocktail here, a cocktail there, and one was ready for beddie-bye.
On June 24, we awoke to cooler temps and the promise of rain. After breakfast and checkout, we lined up once more for a final drive: the Rim of the World Highway to Lake Arrowhead. The road was winding but less intense than the route up to Big Bear—perfect for a final scenic cruise.
The curves ended at the parking lot at Jettie’s Bar and Grill, lakeside with a lovely view and cleared weather. The food was good, as was the company. There was a touch of the sweet sadness occasioned at the end of a wonderful journey together. After hugs and heartfelt farewells, we each peeled off and made our way home.
Memories of people, places, and things are all part of the SBR Activity schedule. I sincerely hope that while reading this recap of the Big Bear Fun Run, if you haven’t yet, you’ll make the decision and effort to join us on our various adventures.

I would like to begin by expressing my deep gratitude to each and every one of you who have played a vital role in the creation and success of the Porsche Ladies of Santa Barbara.
When I first started this group, I wasn’t sure what to expect or how successful it would become. The only requirement I asked was that you bring your compassion, support, and love for one another. Since our first gathering on June 4th, 2023, we have hosted at least one event each month—whether it be luncheons in private homes graciously hosted by our beautiful Porsche ladies, or museum outings with docents, ranging from Huntington Gardens to the Hermitage, Bellosguardo, the Getty Museum, our beautiful alpaca trip where the ladies were able to touch, and embrace these beautiful creatures, and our next trip is scheduled for September—the Getty Villa in Malibu.
You are all amazing, strong, intelligent, and wonderful women. Your support—to me and to the Santa Barbara Porsche club—has been immeasurable and deeply touching over these last two years.
From the beginning, my objective was to give a voice to the women of our region and to encourage more ladies to attend events, drive their own Porsches, and create a space filled with laughter, fun, camaraderie, shared hopes, and ideas. A place where we could perpetuate the wisdom we carry as women. We have become a true community—genuine, authentic, and compassionate.
With that in mind, I feel the time has come to pass the torch and honor the next woman with the privilege of leading the Porsche Ladies of Santa Barbara group. This journey has been incredibly enriching and has sharpened my organizational skills—all the while managing a fulltime psychology practice.
I will be stepping down as vice president next year, but I hope to remain close to support and assist the new leader in continuing the group’s legacy. My hope is that the Santa Barbara club will continue to remain strong and be a more inclusive social club for both women and men of all ages. More than anything, my deepest concern is to ensure that this incredible group of beautiful, kind, and spirited women does not disappear.
Together, we have built something special—a community of women who bring creativity, fun, curiosity, and expertise to every gathering. I hope to continue to serve and work alongside all of you in strengthening our club and drawing in a new generation of members—young women and men alike—who will keep the spirit of the Santa Barbara Porsche club alive for years to come.
I am truly grateful for your kindness, generosity, and unwavering support over these past two years.
With all my heart,
—Lorraine Gray VP, Santa Barbara Porsche Region (Zone 8)

New members, scenic drives, and a track experience giveaway made for an unforgettable day as the Santa Barbara Region rolled out a warm and spirited welcome for its latest Porsche enthusiasts.
More than just a drive, it was a warm welcome to the SBR family.
Every two years, we host a special event to welcome and celebrate the newest members of the Santa Barbara Region. This year’s gathering took place on July 19th, beginning at Porsche Santa Barbara, where we were warmly greeted by Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge and his team. Attendees enjoyed fresh pastries, fruit bowls, and beverages while catching up with friends and getting to know new faces. After a welcoming driver’s meeting led by Doreen Pankow, the adventure began.
EIghty-seven members driving 46 Porsches hit the road in three groups, led by Doreen Pankow, Lionel Neff, and Bill Hallier. The scenic route took us over San Marcos Pass and into the Santa Ynez Valley. From there, we made our way through the winding beauty of Foxen Canyon and Alisos Canyon roads, an ideal stretch to enjoy our cars. We then cruised west through Los Alamos and north on CA-1, arriving at the Monarch Club in Nipomo, surrounded by rolling hills, golf courses, and new development.
At the Monarch Club, a delicious buffet awaited with filet mignon, salmon fillets, and a full range of sides. Lemon bars and double chocolate brownies topped off the meal.
Conversations around the tables were full of energy as longtime members welcomed newcomers and swapped stories about life and their cars.
Following lunch, SBR President Steve Doll opened the formal program by thanking our generous event sponsors: Henry and Paula Hinck of Schneider Autohaus and Greg and Taylor Hwang of House Automotive. Bob and Pat Howard, PCA Central California Coast Region members, were also recognized for helping secure the venue and coordinating parking.
Zone 8 Representative Lori DeCristo gave an overview of her role and our region’s place within Zone 8. Lionel Neff previewed upcoming events, and 24 new members were introduced and gifted PCA mugs and pens.
Six lucky winners received track passes for the Porsche Experience Center in LA, generously donated by Porsche Santa Barbara.
It was a day full of connection, appreciation, and pure Porsche passion—captured beautifully thanks to photographers Steve Geldman and Bill Hallier.
The Nominating Committee is seeking candidates for the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer to be elected this fall for two-year terms beginning in 2026. Artand I were part of an extraordinary band of motorists who just got back from a two-night visit to Big Bear. We recently purchased a Panamera, which I love as much as my Macan, and so am very willing to share in the driving on any trip. And when we take the Panamera on any club drive, we’re the “sweep” car. However, until Big Bear, I had always avoided those drives that involved “twisties” (which, since we’re talking about the Porsche Club, happens most of the time!).
The last day of our trip we had a 25-mile drive planned from Big Bear to Lake Arrowhead as part of our journey home. And since I was in a reasonably large and heavy car, and was very comfortable driving it, I suggested to Art that I drive that short distance.
Doreen Shinn is Secretary and MotorsportReg Coordinator for SBR. Doreen has been a PCA member for six years.
By Doreen Shinn
While the road was windy (long “i”, not short), as Lionel had promised, I wasn’t too concerned. Even knowing that I wasn’t going to make a conscious effort to keep up with the car in front of me and drive faster through the curves than I was comfortable with, I figured that, as sweep car, even if I dropped behind, at some point we would catch up and be able to assist any car that got into trouble!
Bottom line is that I really enjoyed the drive. Did I drop behind? Yes, once several cars got between me and the Porsche in front of me. However, I arrived at the same time as the rest of the group, feeling a greater sense of camaraderie since I was now one of the drivers and not just a passenger!
Does this mean that I’m ready to go on all future windy drives? Not really! But at least I’m now ready to step in if necessary. And the drive made me appreciate how well-handling our Porsches really are.

After being dormant for a number of years, a few long-term members decided to restart RUF (Retired and Unemployed Folks) outings. These events are meant to be informative, educational, and take place during midweek to fit more easily into retired and unemployed folks’ schedules.
Situatedin a remote corner of Oxnard there is a futuristic collection of strange equipment. That is the location of the National Weather Service, a necessary guardian of our daily commerce and livelihood. On July 31, 2025, a group of 22 PCA/ SBR members was afforded an opportunity to inspect the facilities and to take in a fabulous lecture by the head of staff for the Service location. Soon after our arrival, we were granted entrance to the staff area where weather reports are generated daily and made available to news outlets, government (local and national) agencies, and other related channels. Sometimes the reports are issued more frequently depending on changing weather conditions anywhere within the U.S. and its possessions.
SBR members absorbed all the fine points of collecting and distributing timely reports regarding weather warnings to commercial vessels as well as residents of vulnerable seaside villages. For example, there was an explanation to what caused the “rogue” wave that hit Ventura in December of 2023.
Our group of “RUFians” received an update on the tsunami warning that was caused by the recent 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Russia. We were shown the impact on the local water levels/tides and given the details behind how the agency coordinates their warnings and the science behind wave action. We also got to see a sampling of the types of weather gathering instruments they have stationed throughout the area. The tour of NWS consumed more than an hour at the end of which we expressed our thanks, and excitement, to the NWS staff and its management.
Our group proceeded to Fin neys’s Crafthouse in Camarillo for lunch, where ev eryone enjoyed good food and conversation, after which our first revived RUF adventure concluded.
