At the next Cars & Coffee, make it a point to say hello to Angel. We are incredibly grateful to him for opening his shop doors to us, and proud to share his story with all of you!

DER AUSPUFF

Spotlight Angel Martinez's "Gentleman's Spec" Targa 4S In this issue, we are thrilled to spotlight Region member Angel Martinez. If you haven’t met him yet, introduce yourself at our next gathering; you will instantly find yourself locked in a fascinating automotive conversation. This month, we are focusing on the crown jewel of his wonderfully varied collection: a breathtaking 2018 Porsche 911 Targa 4S, finished in Paint to Sample (PTS) British Racing Green. I recently had the good fortune of sitting down with Angel, his wife Frankie, and their energetic dog, Ruby. Walking through his shop, Angel shared the backstory behind each vehicle and the meticulous work he has done on each one. It is immediately clear that Angel approaches his garage with an artist’s eye; every machine is thoughtfully restored or customized to his exact, sophisticated taste. Angel’s journey began after he emigrated from Cuba to America at a young age. In high school, he owned a Volkswagen that needed serious repair. Thanks to an engaging shop teacher who lit a spark, Angel tumbled down the automotive rabbit hole: fixing up vehicles, selling them, and moving on to the next project. Today, his garage is a treasure trove of cool Porsche paraphernalia, anchored by a vintage gas pump and housing everything from a hot-rod Volkswagen to a uniquely cool Volvo. But it’s the Targa 4S that steals the show. It is the epitome of a “Gentleman’s Spec.” It skips the aggressive, track-focused look; instead, the deep, glassy green exterior is beautifully offset by the iconic brushed aluminum Targa bar, a nostalgic nod to Porsche’s open-top heritage. Inside, the cabin is a sanctuary of old-world luxury, wrapped in rich Espresso Natural Leather and accented by handcrafted mahogany inserts. We headed out on one of his favorite drives, Highway 150. As we carved through the curves, we chatted about his affinity for the Targa body style; his collection also includes a couple of vintage Targas in green and aubergine. Even with the top down, we could easily carry on our conversation. We eventually stopped at a scenic lookout for photos. What struck me most wasn’t Angel’s passion for horsepower, but his profound pride in his children and grandchildren. Angel and Frankie have been married for 47 years, and it’s clear that their enduring marriage and beautiful family are truly their greatest successes. Dominic Coggiola

President

Too many cars, not enough time! Join me for an ocean swim, bike ride, run or hike. Afterwards let's go hang out at a car gathering.

STEVE DOLL

It has been a privilege and the highlight of my year to be your president again. Time passes so quickly! The holidays are rolling around again: the Concours, Halloween, the time change, November’s C&C, Thanksgiving and the annual Holiday/New Member Party. And don’t forget, Aloha Restaurant will again open just for us for breakfast on Saturday, November 28th. We will park on top of the structure by the Ventura Pier. This is always a good photo op! We will raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. I hope you made new Porsche friends at club events this year. Both Saturday C&Cs had record turnouts. The biggest ever! PP Rod Hersberger has temporarily stepped in to lead the activities committee as it plans for another big year. The R.U.F. group and Brigitte, who leads the ladies group, are helping coordinate so future events won’t conflict. Next year’s activities will be revealed at the holiday party on December 13th at the beautiful Spanish Hills Country Club. I missed the longer events this year but heard nothing but great reports. Count me in for 2027! Thanks to everyone who planned and ran our outings, and of course, to all of you who joined in! You may have heard that Porsche plans to be more exclusive, citing the slowdown in China and recent tariffs (I’m sure the move to electric was costly too). The Wall Street Journal recently reported 20% price increases and lower output with more specialty cars; think 911 R, 911 S/T and Heritage editions. Also planned: a halo mid-engine sports car “to sit above the 911,” the electric Boxster and Cayman, and a gas-engine plugin hybrid SUV to compete with the BMW X5. There are exciting changes ahead, which will keep our current car values high. Maybe it’s time to chat with Rene about ordering a new one before prices rise... Speaking of old cars, sort of, I’m taking my ‘69 911 T to UnStock on the Huntington Beach Pier, November 18th. Let me know if you’re going. Greg from Legacy Autosport won Best in Show last year with his beautiful 911. Remember to support our sponsors. Happiness isn’t around the corner; it is the corner. Drive safely!

As the proverb goes, “all good things must come to an end.” And while change is inevitable, you should always keep reaching for more. After this issue, my time as your editor comes to an end. It’s a bittersweet moment: I’m incredibly proud of what I’m leaving behind, and just as hungry for what’s next. It’s been an absolute pleasure taking Der Auspuff to where it stands today. I picked up this “gig” with zero knowledge of how a magazine is made, but with motivation to spare, which is what gets me into (and out of) my own “shenanigans.” I know this is disappointing news for some of you, but I hope you understand. Rachel and I plan to be even more involved in club activities moving forward, and now we really have to be, since we just added our second Porsche to the garage: a 2020 Cayenne. I think it’s finally okay to own a Cayenne, as long as it isn’t your first or only Porsche ;) This issue brings back our Spotlight feature, this time courtesy of Dominic Coggiola! Dominic has stepped up in a big way, complementing the magazine with his beautiful photography, enthusiasm, and writing skills. Featured this time is Angel’s 911 Targa. I swear picking Angel a second time was pure coincidence... Angel, you simply have impeccable taste in cars, and quite the range of them! That said, we’ll do our best to avoid repeats moving

Sierra

Passes

Eighteen Porsches spent three days climbing the Sierra Nevada’s highest and most twisting roads, from Tioga’s 9,945-foot summit to a 4,858-year-old bristlecone pine. There were closures, detours, and a “chicken ranch” that was really a casino, and the trip lived up to its promise to rival Europe’s Porsche Alpine Road tours.

Back on Highway 395, the 16-mile June Lake Loop wound past June, Gull, Silver and Grant lakes, with charming towns tempting drivers to stop. Instead, we continued south to Bishop for lunch at the very popular Schat’s Bakery, which has served weary Eastern Sierra travelers since 1903 and churns out up to a whopping 25,000 loaves per day. The climax of day three was the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, up White Mountain Road. The scenery changed from pines and meadows to the drier scrub and grasses east of the Sierras as drivers picked their way past loose rocks, potholes and a short one-way stretch through a narrow canyon to Schulman Grove, just under 10,000 feet. The Grove is home to the Methuselah tree (unidentified for its protection), dated to 4,858 years old: the oldest known “non-clonal” living thing. With one last drive down the mountain, the group spent the final night in Lone Pine, with dinner at Seasons Restaurant to conclude a truly epic journey. Fittingly, the evening ended with a toast to the trip’s architect, beloved Club Activities Chair Lionel Neff, who was unable to attend. Special thanks to Bill Hallier and Bob

ROCKIN’ AND A ROLLIN’ TO THE ROCK STORE BBQ LUNCHEON November 11, 2026

G

et ready for a fun-filled drive through the Santa Monica Mountains on a route perfectly suited for Porsches. We’ll start at the Camarillo Outlet Mall (630 Ventura Blvd) and end at the Rock Store. The Rock Store is an iconic meeting place for celebrities, as well as car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Its history dates back to 1910 when it was a volcanic-rock-faced stagecoach stop and hotel. In the 1940s, the place enjoyed its popularity as a grocery store and the cultural center of Cornell. In 1961, Ed and Vern Savko converted it into a popular refreshment stop for drivers and motorcyclists drawn to the scenic canyon roads. Today, the Rock Store enjoys its status as an “In Spot” to just hang out. Ordinarily closed midweek, the Rock Store is opening just for our Santa Barbara Region members. Lunch will be a mouthwatering feast of BBQ tri-tip, pulled pork, and homemade potato salad, along with your choice of a non-alcoholic beverage. A vegetarian choice will be available. The price for this fabulous drive-and-dine event is $40 per person plus $2 MotorSportsReg fee. Register at msreg.com/ sbrrockstore2026. Limit 40 people. Questions: contact Rod Hersberger at rodhersberger@gmail.com.

Porsche Ladies FILLMORE ADVENTURE

Our adventure began on a sunny Friday morning with a visit to the Fillmore Fish Hatchery, where rainbow trout are raised and released into lakes and streams for fishing. Feeding the fish turned into quite a frenzy, with hundreds of hungry trout rushing for the food while little finches joined in, hoping to get their share! Our next stop was the Fillmore Historical Museum, where a guided tour took us back in time as we discovered the town’s fascinating history through historic buildings, exhibits, and local artifacts. After a morning of exploring, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch at El Pescador Restaurant, sharing a delicious Mexican meal, good conversation, and plenty of laughter. Our final stop was Bennett’s Honey Farm, where we discovered locally produced honey and sampled a variety of delicious flavors. The Porsche Ladies had a wonderful day filled with interesting discoveries, great food, laughter, and friendship. Another memorable adventure together! Ladies, if you are not part of the Santa Barbara Porsche Ladies group but would like to join, please contact Brigitte Trapp at brigittetrapp@me.com. Brigitte Trapp

R.U.F. Retired and Unemployed Folks

National Disaster Search Dog Foundation The Retired and Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) had a memorable visit to the NATIONAL DISASTER SEARCH DOG FOUNDATION in Santa Paula. (Who knew that the Santa Barbara Region of the PCA was home to this nation-

Story by Dick Lange

al resource). Recent newspaper articles have touted their participation in both the earthquakes in Venezuela and the flash floods in Texas. Wilma Melville, a retired schoolteacher, created the foundation in 1996 (they are celebrating their 30th anniversary) after being deployed as a canine search specialist to the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing. She set a goal of certifying 168 search dog teams, one for every life lost in the bombing, which the foundation surpassed in 2020. The foundation’s home located in Santa Paula on roughly 145 acres, was opened in 2017. It features lodging for handlers, a doghouse, a veterinary clinpiles, including a train wreck, among other things. At any one time, around 40 dogs are in the year-round training program to become search-and-rescue certified. It costs around $130,000 to identify, train and house a single canine before it is ready to be deployed. To support this important mission, the Porsche Club of America Santa Barbara Region made a $2,000 donation at the time of our visit. When trainers feel a dog is ready, they are officially paired based on compatibility with a handler who they will live with the rest of their lives. Dogs taken that are later determined not to be suited for this type of work are still taken care of until a permanent home can be found for them. Following an educational morning and stimulating conversations about our recent experience, we retired to the Rabalais Bistro for a New Orleans style lunch.
