Introduced in Europe in 1993 and North America in 1995, the 993 marked the last air-cooled 911. Porsche's variable induction system (Varioram) boosted performance across the range. The exclusive 993 RS and turbocharged models became highly collectible. The widebody C4S and C2S variants brought turbo styling to naturally aspirated engines, blending performance with luxury. Production ended summer 1998 as the water-cooled 996 arrived, closing an era. (Source: stuttcars.com)

Tobias Raya's 1996 993 Carrera Coupe
In September 2025, Tobias purchased his 1996 993 Carrera Coupe through an estate sale in New York. Upon arrival, the car still wore a New York State Sheriff's Institute badge from its original owner. This discovery felt like destiny, a sign that both man and machine had found what they were searching for. Tobias added his own detective's badge underneath it. Two badges. One 993. A legacy continued through a shared passion for the ultimate driver's car.
After a 20-year career in law enforcement, most of it as a detective, Tobias survived a gunshot wound to the face in 2006. He recovered and kept working for years, until injuries and surgeries forced medical retirement.
The 993 is the last of Porsche's air-cooled 911s, the final model before the brand evolved into the water-cooled era. For Tobias, that timing hit different. As one chapter closed for Porsche, his law enforcement chapter closed too. The story between the 993 and Tobias is one of transforming and evolving into the next chapter, together. "The 911 matured and evolved. So am I."
Currently finishing a master's degree in clinical psychology, Tobias is heading towards his next chapter as a therapist, helping others navigate their own difficult periods. A detective who solved crimes is now becoming a clinician who helps people solve themselves.
Since picking up the 993, he's done various work on the car: repairs, maintenance, restoration, and personal touches that leave his signature on it. Ask him about it over coffee at one of our Cars & Coffee events, and you'll get the technical details. But at its heart, the real story represents what the 993 means to Tobias: survival, perseverance, and freedom. The ability to keep moving forward when life gets impossibly hard, and the choice to enjoy what unfolds next. The dual badges aren't decoration. They're proof that the past doesn't disappear; it sits alongside who you're becoming. —Editor

May is going to the dogs! We are having a dog day at the Santa Barbara Cars & Coffee at Leadbetter Beach May 9th. I will have my dog Bibi (shown above), and no, she will not be arriving in my Porsche. Let's try something new and go for a dog walk afterwards.
Too many cars, not enough time! Join me for an ocean swim, bike ride, run or hike. Afterwards let's go hang out at a car gathering.
Happy belated April Fools’ Day! I hope you didn't get fooled. I told my wife we bought a beautiful red convertible. This has a special meaning for us since she claimed our previous red car was the reason she was getting tickets. She said, “No more red cars!” So, she really didn't fall for my April Fools’ joke.
Springtime has finally arrived and you know what that means? Later sunsets and longer days for more driving. In past years, all the region presidents would meet in person for a Zone meeting at the Porsche dealership in Ontario. This year, your new VP Bill Hallier and I only had to drive to Woodland Hills. It's interesting to get updates on PCA National and what the other regions are doing. We hope to get more events planned with the other regions. We did learn many of the regions have a social director or chair for destination events or gatherings. As an example, our annual Holiday Party would fall in that category, which will also be one of two new member events this year. A new member event every other year is just not often enough.
Treffen at Sea will be cruising for six days down the West Coast with a stop in Santa Barbara on September 24th. VP Bill is in contact with them, so we hope to have some interaction when they come ashore. More details to follow and suggestions welcome. UnStock-I hope you were able to see the photos and write-up by Steve Geldman in the previous Der Auspuff I volunteered and was sorry I didn't bring my '69 911 T out to it. There were so many cool cars. Greg from Legacy Autosport was the star. Well actually his white 911 coupe. On May 16th we will be having our 2nd annual fundraiser breakfast at Aloha Steakhouse. Thanks to the owners for opening just for us. We will park on the top floor of the parking structure overlooking the Ventura Pier again. We raised $10k for Alzheimer's last year. If you can't make the event, I'll collect donation checks at our Cars & Coffee events. Let's go for a walk afterwards onto the Pier or up to the Ventura River and back.
Most of all, thanks to the board and volunteers that make this such a great Club! I look forward to seeing you at an event or at one of our sponsors and/or advertisers places of business. It's not just the cars, it's the people!
—President Steve

Spring season is upon us. Warmer pavement, top-down drives, and longer days are finally back. I can’t believe a full year has gone by being your editor. We are now on our sixth issue, and what an experience it has been. Many of you have come to know me, and you know how much I love our marque and, more importantly, the people behind it - you. I have also felt incredibly welcomed by the “big dogs” - our Board, who have embraced new ideas and given me, quite literally, the freedom to explore them. Thank you.
This issue brings a variety of stories, from our Valentine’s event earlier this year, to a visit to the Adamson House for a bit of cultural exploration, all the way to hitting the track at the world-renowned Willow Springs. Love, culture, and heat-cycled rubber are all on the menu. You will also find plenty of upcoming events featured throughout. Keep an eye out for the flyers, and plan your next PCA adventure. You won’t want to miss out on these events.
I truly enjoyed developing the new Spotlight segment. In this issue, we feature a particularly striking 993 from one of our members. I will continue to highlight more cars like this, the ones that really grab your attention and tell a story.
Since our last issue, I have also reached out in an effort to bring more designminded members into the fold, whether to collaborate directly or provide technical and creative support. I have been genuinely excited to see the interest this has sparked. If you are looking to expand your creative outlet or break away from your day-to-day routine, I would love to connect.
As always, I am grateful for the opportunity to curate these issues. It is both fun and deeply rewarding. Have suggestions? Article ideas? Want to plan a canyon drive? Reach me at editor.pcasbr@outlook.com.

Coffee with Tobias Raya early Saturday morning. Talking life, cars, and planning our Der Auspuff shoot ahead of an evening of driving in circles and trading jokes. Good times. Good people!
Hereis where car passion comes to life each month. The aroma of fresh coffee blends with the sound of flat engines rolling in as our club gathers to share more than just a morning. From the hunt for a new Porsche to the pride of a DIY upgrade or repair, the perfect camera angle, or a story from an open road. It’s where cars, coffee, and community meet for a celebration of Porsche culture hosted by the Porsche Club of America, Santa Barbara Region.

The Sweetest Drive of the Year
Photography
On February 14, the siren call went out for Porsche lovers and their Valentines to answer the call: LET’S GO! The day began with the regular Santa Barbara Cars & Coffee at Shoreline Beach Café from 8-9 a.m. Next, those signed up for the Valentine’s Drive and Dine event gathered at Porsche of Santa Barbara. Hosted by Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge, they enjoyed a delightful continental breakfast, admired the latest Porsche offerings, and connected with fellow enthusiasts.
With 124 participants and 65 Porsches registered, the 10:15 a.m. pre-drive briefing was essential. The large group was split into six, led by Lionel Neff, Bill Hallier, Bob Clark, Liam Murphy, Garry Jones and John Cross, ensuring a smooth and safe departure. Soon after, the caravan of Porsches blasted off on a 70-mile journey through Santa Barbara’s scenic backroads.
The route climbed Highway 154 over San Marcos Pass, where drivers were treated to panoramic views of a remarkably full Lake Cachuma as they crested the summit. Descending, the drive passed through the charming town of Los Olivos, known for its boutique wineries and its role as a center for the Santa Ynez Valley wine region. To make things interesting, we turned onto Foxen Canyon Road, named an American Viticultural Area in 2013. This stretch offered a wondrous exercise course for enthusiastic Porsche drivers, replete with challenging curves and spectacular views of vineyards along the way. After recent rains, the hillsides were resplendently green and lush.
The hillsides were resplendently green and lush, a wondrous exercise course for the enthusiastic Porsche driver.
That, my friends, is what our PCA SBR Club is all about.
At the Zaca Station Road intersection, we turned left toward the junction of Highways 154 and 101. We then headed south on the 101 for a scenic drive through Gaviota Pass, named by the Portola expedition in 1769. Beyond the pass, the route revealed stunning Pacific Ocean vistas, with contrasting clouds and streams of sunlight playing joyously across the boundless water. At the 70-mile mark, our serpentine line of Porsches exited at Cathedral Oaks Road and made the short trip to The Timbers Roadhouse restaurant on Winchester Canyon Road. The Timbers itself is rich with local history. The land was purchased in 1952, and salvaged timbers from the dismantled Ellwood Pier, which had been shelled by a Japanese submarine in 1942, were used to build the restaurant. Even the large dining room fireplace has a story, constructed from rocks quarried during the building of Bradbury Dam at Lake Cachuma.
Upon arrival, we found abundant parking for our treasured Porsches. Inside, we were warmly greeted by hosts Brooke and her mother Kim, who led us to a warm and inviting dining area. The Valentine’s luncheon menu offered a choice of tri-tip with baked potato, chicken piccata with noodles, halibut with rice pilaf, or vegetable lasagna, all preceded by a green salad. For dessert, a choice of apple, peach or blackberry pie à la mode capped off the meal. The Timbers staff did a remarkable job serving the large group efficiently, with food arriving warm and delicious.
All in all, though bustling with events, the day went off without a hitch. The weather cooperated, as did the Corvette Club in an adjacent dining room. Most importantly, everyone shared a delightful time with good friends, enjoying each other’s company. That, my friends, is what our PCA SBR Club is all about.

ADAMSON
Story by Dick Lange
Fog over the Santa Monica Mountains, 16 Porsches on a freshly reopened road, and a two-hour tour of a 1929 Malibu landmark that nearly became a parking lot.
On March 26, which was a very foggy morning, the RUF (SBR’s Retired and Unemployed Folks) organized and led a group of 27 members in 16 Porsches on a tour of the Santa Monica Mountains and a visit to the Adamson House in Malibu, California.
We gathered in Westlake Village to start our drive and proceeded to Mulholland Highway via Kanan Road. Mulholland Highway was chosen because it contains “The Snake,” which was recently reopened after being closed for almost seven years. “The Snake” is a 2.4-mile stretch of many sharp hairpin turns and some spectacular views above the fog, overlooking the Santa Monica Mountains.
Upon arrival at the Adamson House, just off from the Surfrider Beach, we were met by our three docents who led us on a two-hour tour of the home and gardens. We learned that the home was built in 1929 by Rhonda Rindge and contains exquisite
tilework, hand-carved wood and lush gardens. Rhonda Rindge was the daughter of Fredrick and May Rindge, the last private owners of the Malibu Spanish Land Grant. May founded the influential Malibu Potteries after discovering clay on the land. Malibu Clay tiles richly adorn Adamson House. Saved from demolition for a parking lot, Adamson House is now a California Historical Landmark preserved by the Malibu Adamson House Foundation.
"Exquisite tile-work, hand-carved wood, and lush gardens. Built in 1929 and still immaculate."
For those attendees who were inclined afterwards, we drove to Malibu Seafood, a local ocean view restaurant for some very fresh seafood and stimulating conversation about our visit to the Adamson House.

SFruit of the Vine Drive and Dine
At Vega Vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills July 22, 2026
ummer has arrived, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than behind the wheel of your Porsche, favorite passenger beside you, carving through the hills and backroads of Santa Barbara County. Our group of wine and food enthusiasts will gather in Santa Barbara and set off on a memorable drive. Warm weather, winding roads, and a family-style luncheon with wine pairings await. We’ll cross the San Marcos Pass on Highway 154, glide past Lake Cachuma, and roll through Los Olivos before turning onto Foxen Canyon and Ballard Canyon. Vineyard after vineyard lines the route, each encouraging a friendly “thumbs up” as we pass. From there, we’ll cruise through Solvang, enjoy the tree-lined curves of Alisal Road, then take a short sprint on Highway 101 North to Santa Rosa Road. Our destination: Vega Vineyards, a storybook farm and ranch in the Santa Rita Hills, steeped in early California history (think the legend of Zorro).
At Vega, we’ll be seated family style beneath a large trellis and oak trees. The farm-to-table meal begins with beet and Caesar salads, followed by generous portions of salmon and short ribs. Each course is paired with Vega’s Sparkling Rosé, Pinot, and Dal Prado wines. After lunch, enjoy a wine pour and a walking tour of the estate.
The price for the drive, gourmet meal, wine pairings, and tour is $98 per person, plus a $2 MSR fee. This is no ordinary drive and dine—it’s an unforgettable experience. Registration opens May 10 and closes July 10, or when the event sells out. Register at msreg.com/sbrvega2026. Questions: Lionel Neff at zuma13@msn.com.
Pine
Mountain Club Drive and Dine and SBR Newcomer Member Recognition Event
July 25, 2026
Experience the thrill of Highway 33—a mountain drive that rivals the best roads in Europe. Gather in Ventura at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. launch, then slip into your waiting Porsche for a stunning 70-mile journey. You’ll carve through the steep gorges of Los Padres National Forest, top summits over 5,000 feet, and follow the Jacinto Reyes National Forest Scenic Byway—better known as the Maricopa Highway—as it winds through dense forest, dramatic rock formations, and the rugged Sespe Creek gorge. Our spirited ascent delivers us to the 5,160-foot Pine Mountain Summit, where the Cuyama Valley sprawls below in spectacular fashion. On the descent, massive white sandstone outcrops near Rose Valley catch the light. After the technical twists, we pause briefly at the Ranger Station, then roll on to the Pistachio Factory for a relaxed break—grab some fabulous pistachios, drinks, and snacks. Stage two continues on Hwy 33, merging onto Hwy 166 North and then Hudson Ranch Road. Here, your Porsche truly proves its worth: curves, curves, and more curves of every shape and description. Beware of “smile cramps.” We climb from the valley floor at 3,000 feet to Pine Mountain Club at approximately 6,000 feet, where a private luncheon awaits at the Condor Restaurant (burger—veggie option available—chicken sandwich, or BLT, served with salad, fries, and a beverage). After lunch, we recognize our newest club members. All this for $42/person. Reservations open April 30 at msreg.com/sbrpinemountain2026. Questions? Lionel Neff at zuma13.msn.com.

February set a strong tone for the year, with 522 cars sold for $47.9m, marking a 13% increase in unit volume and a 31% jump in dollar volume year over year, all while holding a healthy 75% sell-through rate. March continued that trend.. With the same 75% sell-through rate, the market expanded as 687 Porsches crossed the block for a total of $78.1m, representing a 12% increase in units and a 36% surge in dollar volume compared to last March. Perhaps more telling is the step up from February to March this year, with unit volume increasing by 165 cars and dollar volume jumping over $30m, signaling strong momentum as we head deeper into the spring market.
Last month we discussed Florida Car Week, which spanned the end of February and the beginning of March, with record after record set at the very top of the market. While the remainder of March didn’t quite reach those same heights, the top end remained strong. Singer’s Classic Study 911s are now firmly back above the $1m mark, with the “Fillmore” commission, a gorgeous example finished in Pure Gunmetal over Turmeric, hammering at $1,275,000. We also saw another twelve-month online high for the 991.2 GT2 RS, as a Paint-to-Sample Cobalt Blue Metallic example with just 571 miles sold for $660,000. 911 S/Ts, on the other hand, appeared to soften slightly, with both examples to cross the block trading below the $648,000 floor we had seen over the prior twelve months.
with 2,400 miles and all the right options, which became the first online auction result to exceed $200,000 since September of last year.
One standout worth calling out from the broader Boxster market was a 2008 Boxster S Limited Edition 6-Speed, finished in Orange over Black leather and Alcantara, showing 14,000 miles. One of just 250 units produced, this was a well-kept example with recent service and strong presentation. Coming into the sale, twelve-month comps averaged $44,400, with a prior high of $48,000 for a 1,800-mile car, albeit in Alaska. Despite having more miles, this one reset the market, selling at a final bid of $49,999. A strong result, and one that suggests there’s still upside in the right limited-run Boxsters when they check the right boxes.

As you know, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the Boxster and Cayman market as Porsche has sunset the 718, with any potential ICE replacement still a few years out, if it comes at all. The Boxster GTS 4.0 market took a clear step up this month with back-to-back twelve-month highs. A 1,500-mile example sold for $109,000, followed shortly after by a 271mile car bringing $112,000 after failing to sell at that same number back in February. The rest of the mid-engined lineup appeared largely flat, including the Cayman GT4 RS, which has been trending downward for some time. That said, we did see one standout, a Paint-to-Sample Black Olive example
Looking at the aircooled market, we saw a surprising number of 993 Carrera S examples cross the block. Seven in total, with all but one finding new homes, averaging $242,600, and all but one clearing the $200,000 mark. Leading the way was a 15,000-mile 1998 example finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over Black leather. An excellent car throughout, it set a new twelve-month high at a final bid of $275,000 after failing to sell in February at $242,000. Another standout came from a 1989 911 Carrera Coupe 25th Anniversary Edition, formerly owned by Jerry Seinfeld. Showing just 11,000 miles, it was the lowest mileage example we’ve seen by a wide margin and presented accordingly, hammering at a final bid of $172,000.
With strong results across multiple segments and momentum building through the first quarter, all eyes now turn to April. Headlining the month is Broad Arrow Auctions’ Air|Water allPorsche sale, which has quickly become one of the more anticipated single-marque events on the calendar. If the first three months of the year are any indication, expect more of the same, strong results, competitive bidding, and a market that continues to show depth across both modern and vintage offerings.

Staying Connected with PCA Santa Barbara Region
Facebook & Instagram: Your Daily Dose of Club Life
Leading our social media efforts is Sal Reyes, our dedicated Social Media Chair, who expertly manages both our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Sal has mastered the art of getting club information and photos out to members quickly, ensuring you never miss a beat. Facebook (facebook.com/PCASBR) is our most active platform for member interaction – event discussions, technical questions, spontaneous drive invitations, and real-time updates. Instagram (instagram.com/pcasantabarbara) takes a more visual approach, showcasing our cars and events through compelling photography. Think of it as our digital portfolio. Many members follow both since they serve different purposes: Facebook for information and dialogue; Instagram for inspiration and visual storytelling
Der Auspuff Magazine: Our Digital Publication
Andres Bergsneider, our new energetic young editor, has brought a fresh perspective and dedication to Der Auspuff. In addition to the printed issue that’s delivered to your home, every issue going back to 2011 is available online at issuu.com/pcasbr. Each issue is professionally formatted and easily accessible from any device, making it simple to catch up on club news whether you're at home or on the go.
Behind the Lens: Our Photography Team
None of our visual content would be possible without our talented photographers: Bill Hallier, Steve Geldman, Gary Krueger, Dennis Power, and many others who generously contribute their skills. These dedicated members capture the spirit of our events, providing the stunning images that populate our social media channels and preserve our club's memories.
Event Registration Made Easy
Doreen Shinn manages our events calendar and registration system through MotorsportReg (pcasb.motorsportreg.com). Doreen's prompt posting of events ensures members can register quickly for drives, social events, and track days. This platform streamlines the registration process and helps organizers manage attendance efficiently.
As PCA-SBR has evolved, so has the way we communicate. While we still value face-to-face connections at drives and social events, we've built a robust digital presence that keeps our community engaged and informed. Here's how to tap into everything the club offers.
Email Updates: Direct Communication When It Matters
When the club needs to reach everyone quickly with important information – registration openings, event changes, or time-sensitive announcements – we send email blasts directly to your inbox. These messages ensure critical updates reach the entire membership, regardless of which platforms you actively use. Make sure your email address is current in your PCA profile.
The Hub: Our Website and Photo Archive
Randy Fishwick, our dedicated Webmaster, maintains two crucial digital resources for our club:
The Official Website (pcasb.org) serves as the authoritative source for upcoming events, club news, and essential information. Randy ensures the site stays current with the latest happenings and provides members with easy access to everything they need to know about club activities.
Flickr Photo Albums (flickr.com/photos/pcasbr/albums) house our extensive collection of event photography. This treasure trove of memories allows members to relive past events and see professionalquality photos from drives, social gatherings, and track days.
Stay Connected, Stay Engaged
With so many ways to connect, there's no excuse for missing out on the action! Whether you prefer the real-time interaction of Facebook, the visual appeal of Instagram, the in-depth coverage of Der Auspuff, the comprehensive information on our website, or the nostalgic browsing of our photo archives, we've got you covered.

Early morning in Rosamond, five run groups, and the smell of warm rubber on cold asphalt. This is what a PCA track day looks and feels like from the inside.
Story by Glenn Crawford

participants, fantastic! On the other hand, a film crew that will remain nameless, had decided to shoot footage before we were scheduled to go out on track at 9 a.m. and had left a Porsche at the far end of the track without a driver or a key. The red group session start was delayed by about 45 minutes. Despite the microphone going missing on the PA system, management did a great job to get us back on schedule soon after the first session rotation of red, yellow, white green and blue. Each run group got five sessions, and most drivers made
Observation – As one of the instructors, it was very rewarding to see the wonderful PCA members acting like family: students, drivers and instructors making friends, safely driving, freely sharing the track, knowledge, stories, experience, tools and masking tape all day. Everyone left feeling better than
bench racing.
Monday started with some surprises, both good and bad. A sponsor had donated beautiful reusable car numbers to all
A special thanks to Art Shinn and Steve Columbus who came out on Monday and Art brought his neighbor and Tai Chi instructor Dave, who took advantage of lunch laps and rode around the track safely with me at highway speeds without helmets or traffic.
