The Porsche 911T was the entry-level 911 for 19721973, below the 911E and 911S. It gained the larger 2,341 cc "2.4L" engine and stronger 915 gearbox. ROW versions used carbureted 130 hp engines; US-spec had mechanical fuel injection at 140 hp. Early 1973 "1973.5" US cars switched to Bosch CIS injection, keeping 140 hp with lower emissions. Offered as Coupe and Targa. (Source: stuttcars.com)

Bob Clarke's 1972 911T

There are many club members who contribute to the successful operation of our club, and none more important than Bob Clarke. Bob has been a PCA member for ten years, and he presently serves as the person responsible for advertising in Der Auspuff

His devotion to cars surfaced after he moved to California with his family in the 1950s. Bob and his twin brother became fascinated with American muscle cars. While attending Hueneme High School in Oxnard, he began building and rebuilding hot rods, sparking a lifelong passion for cars and motors.

Following graduation in 1964, Bob attended Ventura College and joined the US Navy Reserves. He transitioned to active duty in 1967, and found himself on the crew of the USS Navasota, a fleet oiler that crossed the Pacific several times, including a deployment off the coast of Vietnam. Upon discharge, he attended Cal State Northridge, where he earned a BS in Business.

Bob married Sharon, the love of his life, in 1981. They live in Camarillo with their three award-winning Standard Schnauzers, Dash, Leo and Taffy. Sharon trains and competes in dog obedience trials and she has received numerous awards for her work as a fiber artist.

An entrepreneur at heart, Bob has been a successful real estate investor and, among other enterprises, once owned a laundromat. Following his retirement in 2007, he rekindled his love of golf. He also began assembling what he now calls his "highway garage." His love of all things automotive can be seen in his collections: vintage automotive signs and gas pumps are on display, along with hundreds of "really neat" things he has collected over the years.

He currently owns three Porsches: a 1971 911T, a 1972 911T (featured), and a 2014 911 50th Anniversary Edition. Bob is happy to have a hobby that lets him drive and work on his cars, and he welcomes members to stop by his garage to relax.

President

Too many cars, not enough time! Join me for an ocean swim, bike ride, run or hike. Afterwards let's go hang out at a car gathering.

Another couple of months have raced by since my last president’s column. Not much could top last month's article which included the photo of my dog Bibi. It was fun to see the variety of man’s best friends that visited our Leadbetter Beach meeting, and several did arrive in Porsches. I am reminded that our club is about so much more than extraordinary automobiles.

Whether you are a longtime member who has participated in countless tours and events, or someone who recently joined the club and attended your first gathering, you are an important part of what makes our Santa Barbara Region so vibrant. One of the great privileges of serving as president is seeing firsthand the friendships that developed through our shared passion.

Looking back at May. We had our Alzheimer's fundraising breakfast at Aloha Steakhouse and raised $12,000 with almost 40 attendees getting the latest update on this cruel disease. Special thanks to Jim, Melissa, Charnell and their crew for opening their beautiful restaurant just for us. Of course, special thanks to all our club members for their donations. I went to Rusnak Porsche to see the start of the Gimmick Rally. Another huge turnout to see who will get the winning bragging rights. Thank you Jerry Lasnik for putting on this fun event for so many years! They all, I think, finished at Borchard Park for a BBQ.

Looking forward. For upcoming events, besides this gorgeous magazine, check out our revamped website with thanks to Webmaster Randy Fishwick as well as emails from your Secretary Doreen Shinn. If you have ideas for drives or events, reach out to our esteemed Activities Chair Lionel Neff. Our Concours Chair, Tara Konrath, will need volunteers and clean cars for our upcoming event October 11 at the beautiful Camarillo Ranch House.

Most importantly, remember that this is your club. Your participation, your ideas and enthusiasm shape who we are and where we are headed.

Drive safely, enjoy every mile and stay under the radar. Oh, and August is alternative car month if you so choose.

Your Porschist goofball. When he is not figuring out how magazines are made, Andres spends his time wrenching on his 981 Cayman “Otto,” taking photos, and mountain biking. Instagram: @abergsneider

Howdy all! These last two months have been some of the busiest in a long, long time for me. Lots of personal milestones, Der Auspuff, music festivals, camping, networking, and my main hobby, work, all keeping me fully booked. The one to blame is, of course, me, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

As I write this, it is 2026 Summer Solstice eve. The days are beautiful in Southern California, everybody is looking happy, cars are looking shiny, and even the garage queens are out getting those electro-mechanical juices circulating. Good times.

A week ago I attended our special Cars & Coffee at our lovely local Porsche dealership in Santa Barbara for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and what an event that was! Most important is the sense of community the dealership shares with the club: "It's not just the cars; it's the people." A dealership visit is something most of us, I presume, don't look forward to, yet Porsche Santa Barbara is unlike any other. I look forward to every event they host, and to one day walking in with a blank check and ordering a 911 GT3 Touring Sonderwunsch, a California commission. Think crochet-inspired interior, denim with leather, emerald-green paint, and a lone, subtle red star. But I digress.

This issue we're featuring Bob Clarke's 1972 911T, in an incredible and inspiring story written by our vice president, Bill Hallier. During the development of the article, I offered to help with a couple of shots (mostly for the excuse to visit Bob's garage, really), and wow! Another great story showcasing the members who make PCA Santa Barbara what it is. As always, I am grateful for the opportunity to curate these issues. It is both fun and deeply rewarding. Have suggestions? Article ideas? Want to plan a canyon drive? Reach me at editor.pcasbr@outlook.com.

P.S. I would like to keep expanding the editorial team, especially looking for someone with Adobe InDesign experience, or an interest in learning. Reach out if you or someone you know would be interested!

Editor ANDRES BERGSNEIDER

Rachel and I ARE ENGAGED! She is the reason I have the fuel for all my shenanigans. And onward, to OUR shenanigans <3

Can you guess the location pictured? Harmon Canyon, Ventura. It's a hike I highly recommend, if you're an outdoors kind of person, of course.

Hereis where car passion comes to life each month. The aroma of fresh coffee blends with the sound of flat engines rolling in as our club gathers to share more than just a morning. From the hunt for a new Porsche to the pride of a DIY upgrade or repair, the perfect camera angle, or a story from an open road. It’s where cars, coffee and community meet for a celebration of Porsche culture hosted by the Porsche Club of America, Santa Barbara Region.

A Coastal Dream

Monterey & More

Some events are good. Some are great. Then there are those rare moments when the planets align, the moon is full and the stars shine brighter. Such was the Monterey loop, April 20–22, 2026.

24 Porsches 47 Drivers 232 Miles 3 Days

Day 1 · Santa Barbara to Carmel

The group met at the Habit Burger parking lot in Santa Barbara at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 departure. No one was late. After the driver's discussion, 47 eager participants and 24 gleaming Porsches were ready. The group split in two—one led by me, the other by Steve Geldman.

Our route took us over San Marcos Pass, past Lake Cachuma and Los Olivos, merging onto Highway 101 North. Traffic was light, the weather perfect. Our first stop came in Santa Maria at the Chevron on Betteravia Road. Experience has taught me that 1 to 1.5 hours is the ideal break interval.

"The adventure doesn't begin until you drive past the ROAD CLOSED sign."

Back on the road, we continued toward San Luis Obispo and the Cuesta Grade. At the bottom, we exited onto Highway 58 toward Santa Margarita. The townsfolk greeted our Porsche parade with enthusiasm. Past Santa Margarita, we wound through meadows and sweeping curves before veering left onto Highway 58 toward the infamous Highway 229—known as Rossi's Driveway. At mile marker 106, we turned left onto what can only be called a Porsche dream road: nine miles of unbroken curves, undulating rises and dips, punctuated by surprise 10 mph tight turns.

Dennis Power

At the end of this rapacious drive, lunch awaited at the Loading Chute Restaurant in Creston. Choices included chicken Caesar salad or tri-tip, club or pulled pork sandwiches. Once our adrenaline settled and appetites were satisfied, we continued through San Luis Obispo County's ranch and vineyard backroads toward Paso Robles. Beyond Paso Robles, Highway 101 offered sparse traffic and an unfettered 75 mph cruise.

At mile marker 190, we exited at Greenfield—where our incident-free journey hit a snag now known as the "Greenfield Glitch." In the words of Valentino Rossi, "The adventure doesn't begin until you drive past the ROAD CLOSED sign." Without a detour sign, chaos reigned. Alternate routes failed. Then, as if guided by a divine hand, we all found our way and lined up on Elm Street in front of Greenfield High School.

We proceeded to Arroyo Seco Road, where destiny awaited in the form of graveled, potholed Carmel Valley Road—40 miles of Porsche mechanical prowess and driver skill. Carmel Valley Road serves as the back route into Carmel, offering countless sharp blind curves, steep climbs and spectacular views. Straightaways give way to unpredictable curves that greet your adrenal glands.

At the 232 mile mark, we entered sleepy Carmel Valley, where the 25 mph speed limit is strictly enforced (ask me how I know). After fueling at the local Chevron, we formed a 24-car Porsche parade to the Victorian Inn, our home for the next two nights. The hotel offered secure underground parking, an elevator for baggage, a 5:00–6:00 p.m. wine and cheese gathering and a hot breakfast. Best of all, it was walking distance to great dining. The first evening was free for everyone to make their own plans.

Day 2 · Canepa and the Bruces

Day two started with the threat of rain. After breakfast, we met in the parking garage at 9:15 for a 9:30 departure to Bruce Canepa's motorsports facility. To avoid "bumper cars" in the garage, we again split into two groups. Our drive took us from Monterey onto Highway 1, then Highway 17 to Scotts Valley, directly into Canepa's spacious parking lot. Our guide, Zack, greeted us there. When I called to give our ETA, Zack regretfully informed me that Bruce Canepa would not be present—he was driving in the California Mille, a vintage rally inspired by Italy's Mille Miglia.

Once both groups arrived, we were ushered into the showroom. Zack excused himself, then returned with a smile and a surprise: he introduced Bruce Canepa. And if that weren't enough, he had Bruce Meyer in tow. I proclaimed, "We have two Bruces for the price of one." The Bruces had delayed their departure just to visit us. They shared the spellbinding Canepa story, whose current specialty is a reimagined 800 hp Porsche 959 priced at $5 million. After the Bruces bid us goodbye, Zack toured us through Canepa's personal museum collection, featuring the most prestigious Porsche collectibles. Still in sensory overload, we visited the workshop where design and mechanical magic happen. A stock Porsche 959 requires 5,000 hours of labor to become a finished Canepa creation.

Canepa's Specialty: Reimagined 800 hp Porsche 959, built to order at $5,000,000.

After farewells to Zack, we drove home through predicted— and received—heavy rain, which provided a free car wash. Back at the Victorian Inn, everyone had a free afternoon to explore Monterey or relax until dinner.

That evening, our group gathered for a pre-arranged dinner at the Fish Hopper Restaurant on Monterey Bay. At 5:30 we walked four blocks together. The private dining room offered spring rolls and calamari appetizers, salad or soup, and entrées of crusted chicken breast, grilled salmon, seafood pasta Isabella, or artichoke ravioli. Dessert was key lime pie—my personal favorite.

As conversations softened and we recounted the day's events, we walked back to the hotel. It was a grand day shared with the best of friends in the best Porsche club there is.

Bill Hallier

Day 3 · Big Sur and a Surprise Finale

After breakfast, we met at 9:15 for a 9:30 departure to drive Highway 1 through Big Sur. Over the past three years, this road had opened and closed repeatedly due to storm damage. This drive was the treat we had all been waiting for.

The storm yesterday left behind huge puffy clouds, creating vivid color contrasts between sky and ocean. With midweek traffic manageable and panoramic views all around, speed was not a priority—though a few untethered opportunities arose. The spectacular ribbon of highway guided us to the Ragged Point Restaurant at the edge of San Simeon. The staff had coned off parking places for our arrival. We sat together in the outside garden area under umbrellas. Lunch was great.

And then, unexpected, what filled the grassy knoll before us? None other than the cars and drivers of the California Mille— complete with the two Bruces. A spectacular ending to a spectacular SBR event. My thanks to Steve Geldman for leading the second group and for his overall oversight.

Porsche Ladies

A DAY AT THE RACETRACK

What a day! Take six Porsche ladies with varying levels of skill, apprehension and excitement, add roughly 800 horsepower split between a 911 Carrera S and a Taycan, and you have the ingredients for an unforgettable adventure. An unforgettable adventure is exactly what we had at the Porsche Experience Center in Carson.

The opportunity came through our tireless group leader, Lorraine Gray, who approached Rene Verbrugge, sales manager at Porsche Santa Barbara, and he generously offered six corporate event tickets to our group. We set off on an overcast morning, clouds hinting at rain, which nudged our trepidation up a notch since we would be driving regardless of weather. But we were ready.

After admiring the beautiful Porsches in the lobby and peering through the expansive glass wall into the Motor Sport North America Workshop, we were taken into a classroom for a briefing. Then we met our coaches and climbed into our first car, a 911 Carrera S, with the Taycan waiting for later. Each coach led in a car ahead while two of us followed, guided by one-way radios. We could hear our coaches; they could not hear us, leaving plenty of room for laughter, screams and colorful commentary.

Personally, my only prior time behind the wheel of a 911 had been a cautious loop around an empty parking lot, so this was most decidedly out of my comfort zone! But the controlled setting gave me the freedom to push and feel that lead-foot adrenaline rush safely. Among all the modules on the 53-acre facility, the kick plate and the ice hill drew unanimous votes as most thrilling. Both provoke sudden skids and unexpected directional changes you are required to correct and recover from. Skidding and drifting, whether intentional or not, deliver an undeniable charge.

After completing our drives, we were treated to lunch at Restaurant 917, with sweeping views of the grounds and the full track in the distance. Exhausted but buzzing, we reflected on how the day had shifted from butterflies to electric satisfaction.

The Porsche Experience offers more than admiration from a distance; it is a chance to step outside your comfort zone, guided by skilled coaches in a safe, controlled environment. I left with a deeper understanding of why these cars are so passionately loved, and I am already planning a return trip with my husband.

If you have not yet tried it, go for it!

SFruit of the Vine Drive and Dine

At Vega Vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills July 22, 2026

ummer has arrived, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than behind the wheel of your Porsche, favorite passenger beside you, carving through the hills and backroads of Santa Barbara County. Our group of wine and food enthusiasts will gather in Santa Barbara and set off on a memorable drive. Warm weather, winding roads, and a family-style luncheon with wine pairings await. We’ll cross the San Marcos Pass on Highway 154, glide past Lake Cachuma, and roll through Los Olivos before turning onto Foxen Canyon and Ballard Canyon. Vineyard after vineyard lines the route, each encouraging a friendly “thumbs up” as we pass. From there, we’ll cruise through Solvang, enjoy the tree-lined curves of Alisal Road, then take a short sprint on Highway 101 North to Santa Rosa Road. Our destination: Vega Vineyards, a storybook farm and ranch in the Santa Rita Hills, steeped in early California history (think the legend of Zorro).

At Vega, we’ll be seated family style beneath a large trellis and oak trees. The farm-to-table meal begins with beet and Caesar salads, followed by generous portions of salmon and short ribs. Each course is paired with Vega’s Sparkling Rosé, Pinot, and Dal Prado wines. After lunch, enjoy a wine pour and a walking tour of the estate.

The price for the drive, gourmet meal, wine pairings, and tour is $98 per person, plus a $2 MSR fee. This is no ordinary drive and dine—it’s an unforgettable experience. Registration opens May 10 and closes July 10, or when the event sells out. Register at msreg.com/sbrvega2026. Questions: Lionel Neff at zuma13@msn.com.

National Disaster Search Dog Foundation Strengthening Disaster Response in America

Thursday, August 6, 2026

The mission of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation is to rescue and recruit dogs, partnering them with firefighters and other first responders to find people buried alive in the wreckage of disasters. You’ll see their purpose-built training facility where rescued dogs are trained to become disaster search dogs. You’ll learn how the organization rescues high-energy dogs—often dogs that were difficult to place in shelters—and trains them to locate people buried in earthquakes, landslides, building collapses, and other disasters.

Our guided tour of the training facility on Wheeler Canyon Road, Santa Paula, will begin by meeting at 9:00 a.m. in the Camarillo Outlets near Loru’s Cafe (the place of our usual Ventura Cars & Coffee). We’ll depart at 9:30. Cost is $30 per person ($20 to be donated to the foundation). Lunch is optional and on your own at Rabalais in Santa Paula. Register at msreg.com/gooddog. Questions, Contact Howard Rubenstein at hrrca1@gmail.com

It’s Cars & Coffee Tech Time at Porsche Santa Barbara!

Special

Note: The August 8 Cars & Coffee at Shoreline Park will not take place. Instead, join us at Porsche Santa Barbara, where Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge will host a truly special event. Porsche Santa Barbara has recently been honored as a MANTHEY Racing Dealer and Installer (pronounced “Manti”). This means the dealership can now offer aero kits for GT3 cars as well as comprehensive tuning for GT3s and GT4s for racing and track days. We are one of only 50 dealers in the entire United States authorized by Porsche to acquire the specialized tools and equipment needed for this work.

In addition, Porsche has given the dealer an extra GT3 allocation, which is scheduled to arrive from the factory around mid‑July. Rene will equip that very car with a full MANTHEY GT3 kit for our Tech Talk in the showroom! Along with his specially trained technician, Rene will explain the equipment, review the history of the car and the racing team, and discuss the significance of the kit on these truly glorious machines.

The formal Cars & Coffee will begin as usual at 8:00 a.m. , with refreshments provided by Renaud’s Bakery of Santa Barbara. Parking will be available in a designated area on the lot so our Porsches can be displayed as usual. Porsche Santa Barbara is located just off the 101 freeway at 402 S. Hope Ave.

There is no charge, but reservations are required. Please register at: www.msreg.com/sbrtechtalk by July 29 so we can get an accurate headcount for catering.

IAir Water

n the early morning of April 25, we I grabbed our piping hot coffees and quickly rose to the misty morning light to beat the Saturday morning traffic to Costa Mesa to experience the all-encompassing Porsche Air/Water event! It is a unique celebration of Porsche in all its forms, unlike Luftgekuhlt, which only showcases air-cooled cars. This event has been around since 2023 and continues to grow profoundly year after year. The weather was in our favor, so we were able to enjoy the entire day of events that took place throughout the fairgrounds. The parking lot itself could have been its own showcase. The wide variety of Porsches in the lot of enthusiasts could have satisfied one’s curiosity about the Porsche brand. Little did we know what was in store for us inside!

Upon entering the gates, your eyes cannot seem to settle on just one thing as you are easily pulled in many directions from the buildings that hold curated displays. These consisted of art pieces where vehicles had unique custom paint jobs, and there was a “barn find” area with classic Porsches that showcased the owner's individual creativity. Another building was set up for viewing and bidding at the Broad Arrow Porsche auction. A 2015 Porsche 918 sold for over $4.6 million dollars. For the Porsche enthusiast wanting to

explore the unique styles available for their own cars, they carried new and original accessories, ranging from custom seat belts, pasha seat replacements, to flashy rims and highend engine components. They even had an area showcasing Dakar and Cayenne off-road vehicles for those interested in their performance off-road abilities. One of my favorites on display was the IROC Porsches from 1973. All lined up, they truly represented a bag of Skittles in all their colorful glory.

For those who have an appetite and cannot go without a snack in between, don’t worry, they've got you covered. You can literally walk around looking at beautiful cars with a variety of choices from barbecue to simple snacks, or a tasty beverage in hand. It really is a great time for the Porsche lover. They have something there for everyone, and you can easily leave with a memento to help document and remember your visit.

On our way home, we enjoyed going over highlighted moments and our personal experiences at the Air/Water event. Even though this was not an official PCA event, I would highly recommend marking your calendar for next year to enjoy what it may have to offer you.

Gimmick

About 50 Porsche people zeroed their trip odometers and went hunting for clues across Westlake Village back country, then rolled into Borchard Park for BBQ and a battle of brain power.

The day began at Rusnak Porsche in Westlake Village with breakfast catered by Corner Bakery and hosted by Mehran Forutan. About 50 enthusiastic rally adventurers came to get ready for the send-off to hunt for clues and see some new territory.

Before getting the folks on their way, we gave them the “Lasnik pep talk/ orientation tips” for a successful run. This included things like setting their trip odometers to zero as they left, and if they miss a clue along the way, do NOT go back! Also, please remember not to use Siri for clues, since she did not pay to go on the rally. Porsche people are principled! With Jerry wearing his brain anatomy shirt for inspiration (last year it was his Einstein shirt), Pam gave a few examples of clues from past rallies. For example, if you read, “A gal deboned,” you would be looking for Chick-fil-A.

By 9:30 a.m., we sent everyone on their way, wished them luck and looked forward to seeing them in a little over two hours at Borchard Community Park in Newbury Park, CA. We then left to go to the park and set up the tables. This is always a time of apprehension for us. What if someone gets lost and calls Jerry? What if there is a Porsche breakdown?

Whew! No calls! The cars started to roll in as scheduled in a little over two hours. The adventurers handed us their papers for safe keeping. Wood Ranch BBQ showed up as scheduled to bring us a wonderful BBQ lunch.

Most of the route involved routine thoroughfares, but one challenge took them to the Chumash Indian Museum to test their knowledge of native plants. A real challenge guided them to a rural area we were sure most folks had never seen, navigating some gnarly roads with potholes and speedbumps. There were also beautiful scenes of back country living and horses on the road.

DECODE THIS

Rally

After lunch, it was the time of reckoning. Time to go over the answers to determine the top three scoring teams to win cash prizes. The clues ran the gamut from easy (Norelco, Braun; Shaver Automotive), to a bit more challenging (Woman’s visage; Lady Face Ct). There was “a crazy homestead” referring to The Looney Ranch and “a concealed gorge,” suggesting Hidden Canyon. Even “a crabby male chicken,” of course referring to Moody Rooster Restaurant. We had to include “R-rated Mexican Grill,” pointing to Bad Ass Street Tacos.

Results:

Another Lasnik Gimmick Rally is now in the history books. It featured the real winning combination of bright, fun-loving Porsche people having a challenging time searching for clues and enjoying good company and good food and driving the best cars in the world.

You certainly can’t beat that!

Pam and Jerry have been members of PCA since 2005. Jerry drives a 2013 Aqua Blue Metallic Boxster.

#2 decided by a Porsche trivia tiebreaker
A gal deboned: Chick-fil-A. A crabby male chicken: Moody Rooster. A concealed gorge: Hidden Canyon.
