Happy New Year! I can't believe it's 2026 already. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and got to spend time in your cars without traffic. This year you will have plenty of opportunities with the Club. People are what make the Club so great. With that in mind, I want to thank all the board members and also our newly elected vice president and treasurer for stepping up.

VP Bill Hallier is usually found taking photos at our events for our magazine and social media for the last several years. The new treasurer, Garry Jones, has his own CPA firm, attends events and regularly can be seen at the Camarillo Cars & Coffee. I would like to thank outgoing VP Lorraine Gray and Treasurer Jim Brown for their years of service to the Club. I know you both will remain active in the Club.

It is my birthday month, and Der Auspuff was gifted a cover photo featuring the editor’s favorite 911, the 993 generation of our rear-engined lineage.

The timing was unintentional on the photographer’s part, as we are still working on our relationship well enough to mark each other’s birthdays on our calendars, but he absolutely nailed it. Thank you, Steve Geldman, for such a cool shot.

I would like to start by flexing a bit and sharing the great feedback I have received on the redesign of our newsletter. I fully expected comments along the lines of, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it,” “it lost its essence,” or “you should have left the SBR logo up front.” I did not get any of that. Instead, I received a lot of positive feedback and encouragement, and for that, thank you. As always, feedback, whether positive or harsh, is welcome. I want to keep pushing boundaries all around. If you are interested in working with the editorial team and have fresh ideas, please do not hesitate to reach out. I would love to hear what you have in mind.

This issue offers a great variety of events to look forward to, from coastal drives and Rock Store visits to our holiday lunch party. Thanks to Lionel and the activities team, we continue to offer something for every taste and vibe. I am already looking forward to what is coming next year, including the Vino Vaqueros Horseback Tour.

As we transition into 2026, I am excited to see what lies ahead in the automotive world. One highlight is the challenge Porsche AG has embraced in keeping the internal combustion engine alive on the Boxster and Cayman platforms. The market has spoken clearly through its owners.

We still want that fossil-fuel bang juice. What the brand has been doing with the T models is a step in the right direction. Fewer screens and more

Since our last issue, Otto made the drive from Willows, CA to Ventura, CA. It is impressive how comfortable the 981 platform is at freeway speeds, and how surprising the fuel economy can be from a humble 2.7-liter flat-six.

Coastal Rendezvous Story by Lionel Neff

A remarkable turnout of 80 PCA members joined in, which historically draws a big crowd.

With picture-perfect SoCal weather and a route winding through farmland, ranches, and mountain passes, it is no wonder the event remains a favorite.

Day 1, October 19th: There are events and then there are Halo events. The morning of October 19th was the prelude to what came to be an extraordinary time for all who participated. The plan was to gather at the parking lot on La Cumbre Plaza Lane in Santa Barbara at 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. The participants included 24 Porsches and 44 attendees. Upon arrival, the Porsches were lined up in two rows. One to be led

by Bob Clarke and the other by Lionel Neff. Amidst the excitement of the gathering crowd, I noticed the silver flicker of a car coming around the gathered cars. When this phantom vehicle came into plain view, there was a collective sigh and a sense of disbelief that an actual 1960’s vintage Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was in our midst. I could only deal with my uncontrolled enthusiasm by doing jumping jacks. While the growing crowd gathered around the GT Silver 904 Carrera GTS Halo car, we came to make the acquaintance of the owners, Drew and Susan Salter of Scottsdale, AZ, soon to be active members of our SBR Club.

At 10:15 a.m., we all gathered for the pre-drive directions given by Bob Clarke and Lionel Neff. At 10:30 a.m. Bob Clarke’s group #1 departed with the phantom 904 tethered to the group, followed by Lionel’s group #2.

Our drive took us over the San Marcos Pass via Highway 154.

Upon arrival in Los Olivos and at mile marker 30, we turned onto Foxen Canyon. We continued this wondrous curvaceous road with little or no traffic until we reached Aliso Canyon Road at which point we turned left to reach Highway 101. At the intersection of Highway 101, with traffic permitting, we entered Highway 101 North, exiting at Los Alamos where our picnic lunch, provided by Bob’s Well Bread of Los Alamos, awaited us at the Los Alamos Park. This was a beautifully wooded park with great parking, clean restrooms and plenty of picnic tables.

Of course, another opportunity to gawk at the 904 Carrera GTS. From Los Alamos we drove following Hwy 135 North to where it merged onto Hwy 1 which continued through Orcutt, Guadalupe, Pismo Beach then back onto Hwy 101 North.

Anticipating our arrival, Rich Savko, the Rock Store owner, had cordoned off the entire parking lot with yellow tape. The challenge was to park all 34 Porsches in the paved parking lot in front of the Rock Store. With assistance from volunteers from our group, each Porsche was carefully guided. As fate and luck would have it, every Porsche was now safely parked, each ensconced in its own cocoon of love and admiration.

Rich and company had arranged this luncheon especially for the Santa Barbara Region Porsche Club. When advised lunch was ready to be served, we all lined up for a generous serving of BBQ tri-tip, pulled pork, garlic bread, and a choice of potato salad or coleslaw. Dessert was a slice of freshly baked pumpkin bread.

In the warm afternoon shade of the old oaks, our group—satiated and happy—gathered to listen as Rich Savko began his spellbinding account of the Rock Store's history.

In 1890 the Rock Store was a stagecoach stop replete with a boarding house for overnight stays. Across the street is a corral (which still exists) where the horses were fed and sheltered. In 1910 the Rock Store became a general store providing food and supplies to local ranchers and farmers. In 1962 the Savko family purchased the general store, the barns, and the corral across the street. The boarding house was sold off. With the increase in automobile travel, gas pumps were added and soon the Rock Store became a must-stop and hangout for motorcyclists and car clubs. Today, the Rock Store continues to be a weekend haunt for motorcyclists and curiosity seekers. Still frequently occasioned by various celebrities including, but not limited to, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Sylvester Stalone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and on occasion, Steve Geldman and Randy Fishwick. It was, and still is, a hangout for the Hell’s Angels.

Our 45th annual Concours d’Elegance was held at the historic Camarillo Ranch House in Camarillo. As the sun began to rise, the volunteers began to arrive and were thankful for the coffee and donuts to kick start the day.

Sue Kinsling’s smile was the bright start to the day as everyone passed through registration. Next, the parking team, led by Sal Reyes, directed the 25 display cars and the 29 judged cars to their respective areas on the lawn in front of the gorgeous mansion.

I had the blessing of not only being the host, but also the emcee for the day. Desmond Warren of DSR Audio provided music to set the mood for a rocking time and I humbly welcomed everyone, thanked our volunteers and sponsors, Rusnak Westlake Porsche, Legacy Auto and Wheel Concepts, then announced what to expect throughout the day.

Participants admired the beautiful cars, the gorgeous mansion, the graceful grounds, shopped with sponsors, and mingled with friends while waiting anxiously for their cars to be judged. Slowly, a wave of relaxation began to fall upon the crowd as attention turned toward socialization. Patrick and I set out the trophies to add to the excitement and remind everyone why they entered this amazing event and that a potential win was a reality.

Following a spirited drive through the scenic hills of Ventura County, we arrive at the campus of Thomas Aquinas College (TAC), a destination offering stunning architecture and a unique intellectual perspective. TAC sits on a plateau overlooking the Santa Paula Valley. The campus architecture is modeled after the classic Spanish Missions of California, featuring elegant white stucco walls, red tile roofs, and beautiful colonnades that make the entire grounds an architectural gem—a Mediterranean masterpiece. The Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas is a must-see, especially for its soaring design. TAC’s curriculum is built on reading and discussing the Great Books of the Western World—from Homer to Einstein—entirely through seminars, not lectures. The Bruce Meyer Collection: Custodian of Icons Saturday, February 7, 2026

B

ruce Meyer is more than just a car collector; he’s an ambassador for automotive history. Meyer often refers to himself as a “caretaker” or “custodian” of historic vehicles, not just a collector. As a co-founder and founding chairman of the Petersen Automotive Museum, he is highly respected and a key figure in preserving car culture. His personal collection is particularly known for its winners from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including the legendary 1979 Kremer Porsche 935 K3. Beyond the Le Mans winner, Meyer’s personal history with Porsches is noteworthy. He has owned and driven various models over six decades, from a 1961 356 Coupé to a modern 911 GT3 Touring. His collection includes a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 2.8, which won both the SCCA Trans-Am and IMSA GT Championships. And much more.

Following Saturday Cars & Coffee in Camarillo, we’ll caravan to his collection in Los Angeles and meet at his private garage, a short walk from public parking. The Sweetest Drive of the Year The SBR/PCA Valentine’s Day Tour & Luncheon: Share the Road, Share the Love February 14, 2026

T

his Valentine’s Day, prepare for a full day of SBR events designed for you and your significant other. So, get ready to jump into your Porsche and LET’S GO! The day begins with our Santa Barbara Cars & Coffee from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Leadbetter Beach parking lot. Following that, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., those who have signed up are invited to a continental breakfast at the Santa Barbara Porsche dealership, courtesy of Sales Manager Rene Verbrugge. This is a perfect chance to enjoy a light bite, view the newest Porsche offerings, and connect with fellow enthusiasts.

At 10:30, we will blast off on an 80-mile, funfilled drive through the stunning Santa Barbara backroads. We’ll cruise up Highway 154 over the San Marcos Pass, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Lake Cachuma—a reservoir formed

by the Bradbury Dam built from 1950 to 1953 that provides water to Santa Barbara. Leaving the lake in our rearview mirrors, we’ll glide through the charming wine-country town of Los Olivos before challenging our Porsches on the thrilling curves of Ballard Canyon, a designated American Viticultural Area since 2013.

Our route then carries us over Chalk Hill into the fairy-tale village of Solvang, the “Danish Capital of America,” founded in 1911. From there we’ll trace the historic Alisal Road, eventually merging

onto Highway 101 for a scenic drive through Gaviota Pass, a corridor that saw its first county road in 1861 and a state highway in 1915. Once through the pass, the majestic Pacific Ocean will accompany us to our lunch-stop exit at Hollister Road. There, we will make our short jaunt to The Timbers Roadhouse for a specially arranged Valentine’s luncheon.

This historic venue was built in 1952 with timbers salvaged from the Ellwood Pier, shelled by a Japanese submarine in 1942 during World War II. Its large dining room fireplace is constructed from rock quarried during the building of the Bradbury Dam. Upon arrival, you’ll find abundant parking and a warm, inviting dining area. Grab a seat with your Valentine, perhaps have a drink from the bar (alcoholic beverages are not included), and prepare for a delightful meal. The luncheon menu offers your choice of entrée—from tri-tip and chicken piccata to the local catch or vegetable lasagna—all followed by a delicious slice of apple, peach, or blackberry pie à la mode.

R.U.F. Visits the Guide Dogs of America!

On October 23, 2025, 24 members of PCA/SBR’s R.U.F. (Retired and Unemployed Folks) visited and toured the facilities of the Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar (in the San Fernando Valley). Our attention was immediately directed to an area where eight newborn pups were being admired, but not handled, by our club members.

The staff at the center led the tours that gave us a wonderful background lecture as the tour of all the facilities broadened our understanding of the guide dogs and their training. We were amazed at the teaching and learning techniques that result in exceptional learning by the dogs, as well as members of our group, as we proceeded and toured the entire grounds.

Another highlight for the day was the financial contribution of $2,000 made by our club to the Guide Dogs. The staff was most appreciative as recipient of the funds, and our members were proud of the donations. In addition, our members brought with them toys the dogs would appreciate.

Lunch came too soon; we had to leave the dogs and drive to our lunch destination in Sylmar. A conversation about future R.U.F. adventures followed.
