BR’s 50th Anniversary celebration on July 19th is fast approaching. This will be a fun-filled day starting out at Porsche Santa Barbara for a light breakfast followed by a drive through Santa Ynez Valley, eventually returning to downtown Santa Barbara and the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort. We’ll enjoy a wonderful lunch in the rotunda overlooking the ocean and be joined by local celebrities for our program, where we’ll also hold the drawing for our raffle.

THE GIMMICK RALLY

saturday, APRIL 26, 2014 We’ll meet at Rusnak Porsche Westlake at 8:00 a.m. for a light continental breakfast and enjoy some time eating and socializing with our fellow PCASBR members. We will leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. on the first leg of what promises to be a hilarious Gimmick Rally, designed and written by PCA/SBR Gimmick Rally Masters Jerry & Pam Lasnik.

Our drive will take us through familiar territory as well as over some surprising out-of-the-way roads, not far from where many of us live. The rally will take just over two and a half hours of scenic and fun driving. No racing on this rally...only careful powers of observation and clever thinking will put you in the winner’s circle. The top three teams, as determined by the highest number of correct answers, will be our winners and receive prizes.

You will need a driver in a Porsche, a navigator, and a clipboard with pen or pencil. Water, sunglasses, and sunscreen may come in handy, too.

Our rally will end at Conejo Creek Park North at Creekside in Thousand Oaks, located behind the Thousand Oaks Library. There we’ll be treated to a wonderful, catered BBQ lunch of tri-tip and chicken, green salad, potato salad, beans, garlic bread, and drinks.

The cost for this great day of fun, including breakfast, a scenic and enjoyable rally, a delicious lunch, drinks, and SBR activity fee, is only $29.50 per person.

High Surf Yields To Sunshine

A

fter a huge wave wiped out a window at Moby Dick’s earlier in the week, everything was back to more than ship-shape for our March Breakfast there.

Forty-four members and guests parked 28 Porsches on the pier, and as Ron Williams’ beautiful pictures illustrate, it was a perfect morning.

Porsche Parade June 15-21, 2014

In Beautiful Monterey

M

onterey is the site of our 59th Porsche Parade, to be held June 15 through 21, 2014. This is PCA’s annual extravaganza of competitive and social events. Only minutes away from the beautiful Pacific Ocean, we’ll be treated to drives on the famous Pacific Coast Highway, to some of California’s legendary vineyards, and through the hills and valleys of northern California. Of course, Parade has a long history of friendly competition, and that will continue this year with the always challenging Concours d’Elegance, TSD rally, autocross, and the tech quiz.

Registration

Registration will open on April 1st (new date!), and there will be a link to register on pca.org and parade2014.pca.org. This Parade will be very popular, but we will accept ALL entries. We can accommodate all entrants for each of the banquets and all competitive events, as well as most activities. Tours on some days will sell out, however.

Upon checking out of Parade registration, you will receive an email with the link to our host hotels and discount codes. We have blocked rooms at five area hotels, and we do expect hotel rooms to fill up quickly.

Check In

Parade entrants should check in for Parade on Sunday, June 15, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. This is the only time when all the event chair-people will be together in one place to check you in, answer all your questions, make sure you have the banquet seats you want, pick up your meal tickets and are classified properly for the competitive events you’ve entered.

That is when you get your Parade goodiebags and volunteer t-shirts. Late checkin is available throughout the week, but we recommend getting to Monterey on Sunday.

Banquets

We have five banquets - our Welcome Party on Sunday the 15th, the Concours banquet on Tuesday, TSD banquet on Wednesday, AX on Friday, and our Victory banquet on Saturday. You can sign up for all of them, or individually, through registration.

Competitive Events

The Porsche Concours d’Elegance is the showcase of the week’s activities and gets started early Monday, June 16, on the beautiful fairways of the Monterey Hyatt. We have classes for every Porsche and stage of preparation—from “Full” preparation to “Street” class where only

the interior and exterior, including wheels and tires, are judged.

The Mobil TSD Rally on Tuesday, June 17, takes us in and around the beautiful vineyards, hills, forests and beaches of the area in a rally that’s sure to become the stuff of legend. We’ll be offering the TSD Rally School on Monday evening, June 16.

The Michelin Autocross is on Wednesday and Thursday, June 18 and 19, at nearby Marina Airport.

Whether you study up or just show up, the Technical/Historical Quiz on the morning of Friday, June 20 is always a great way to show what you know about our favorite cars…or to face what you don’t.

Events and Activities Parade Kids

The Parade Kids program has become a favorite of our family of enthusiasts, with many of the kids forming enduring friendships and looking forward to Parade each year. The 2014 Parade Kids program will have plenty to offer, true to the California spirit of fun, adventure, and learning in Monterey.

The Hospitality area is always one of the best places to hang out at Parade, whether you’re perusing the various

Gimmick Rally

The Gimmick Rally will be held Thursday, June 19, and is designed to provide a scenic and entertaining outing for everyone, children included. The route showcases the 17-Mile Drive, the Lone Cypress, Carmel and its famous Mission, historic John Steinbeck sites and much, much more. The choice of this year’s gimmick will be unique and will provide both fun and a challenge along with capturing the amazing scenery and character of the Monterey Bay area.

Tours

Throughout the week you will have an opportunity to go on a different driving tour each day. In addition, most driving tours will run more than once during the week in the event you commit to another activity on a particular day. All tours include a variety of points of interest and a destination.

Tech Academy

The fifth annual Parade Tech Academy will be held Friday, June 20, immediately following the Tech Quiz. Once again, we have an exciting mix of our outstanding PCA Technical Committee and outside speakers. By attending more than one session, you become eligible for “Tech Academy Accreditation” of various levels, depending on the number of sessions you attend: • Five Sessions = “Doctorate” • Four Sessions = “Masters” • Three Sessions = “Bachelors” • Two Sessions = “Associate”

Michelin Drive & Compare

Another great event at Parade is the Michelin Drive & Compare, and this is your chance to take a couple of thrill laps around the course in two identical Porsches with two different types of tires.

Golf Tournament

Please join us on Wednesday, June 18, for the annual Porsche Parade Golf Tournament. We will be playing at the Pacific Grove Golf Links on the tip of the scenic Monterey Peninsula, overlooking Point Pinos and the Pacific Ocean, just a short five-mile drive from the Hyatt.

Parade of Porsches

The final driving event of Porsche Parade will give you an opportunity to parade your Porsche and take in the spectacular scenery of Monterey and Pebble Beach.

You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the coast and hills surrounding Monterey and provide a great view to the locals of all our beautiful Porsches cruising by.

Art Show

The art show is one of Parade’s “must see” events, providing a great venue for our talented members to show off their vision, creativity, imagination and skill. This Parade event continues with categories in fiber arts, jewelry, painting, crafts and photography (both amateur and professional divisions). All Parade entrants may participate, including children. We have an expert judging committee as well as our favorite people’s choice award. Take some time during the week just to see the amazing talent of our PCA artists and craftspeople from around the country.

Volunteering

For “normal” people, vacation is the time to relax and be served. Porsche Parade is 99% volunteer supported! That’s how all of us from all over the country get to know each other, by working a couple of fourhour shifts during the week with other PCA members. As a thank you, you will be eligible to attend the exclusive Volunteer Party Luncheon on Saturday, June 21st— there are numerous door prizes too!

The R/C contest has become a favorite in recent years with kids young and notso-young. If you have a “ride,” get entered.

If not, then come and watch. It’s a blast!

You will need to log in to register for Parade.

Check to see that all your information is up-to-date and current, especially your e-mail address. All pre-Parade materials are sent to you via e-mail, and are posted on the Parade website http://parade2014. pca.org.

Everyone signing up for Parade must pay an entrant fee of $169, which covers the entrant and co-entrant.

Fees for the four major competitive events are: • Concours -- $30 per car • Autocross -- $30 per driver • TSD Rally -- $15 per car • Tech/Historical Quiz --$15 per person Entrant fees for guests are as follows: • JPP/CAFP -- $20 • Child age 13-15 -- $15 • Child under age 13 -- $10 • Adult guests -- $40 Additional fees apply for banquets and for selected other activities.

Advance Registration is mandatory -- there is no on-site registration during Parade. Parade registrations are not transferable. Fifty percent of your registration fee and 100 percent of your banquet fees will be refunded if your e-mailed cancellation request is received on or before June 10. There is no refund for cancellations made after that time. You may make changes to your registration at any time before June 10.

Convoy To Country O Western Country

ur Convoy to Country Western Country started on Saturday, March 15 with a last-minute route change due to Mother Nature. Highway 33 had been closed because of mudslides, so we opted for a more leisurely drive on Highway 126 and a stop at the Vista del Lago visitor’s center. At the center, we learned about the State Water Project and its origins, Pyramid Lake, water conservation, and many other topics of interest. Plus, there were many intriguing exhibits.

Back on the road, we had a trip back in time to the days of the 1950s and 1960s country western music, and, then, even further back in time for a visit to a post-Civil War western ghost town.

The weekend was enhanced by comfortable overnight accommodations, terrific food and nightlife, and wonderful socializing, laughing, and camaraderie during this too short, two-day jaunt with members of our club.

SBR’s “non-military” convoy consisted of 31 Porsches carrying 60 participants led by “point man” Dick Lange, and tailed by “rear guard” Howard Rubenstein. In addition, two of our members were already in Bakersfield, so they joined us for dinner Saturday night.

Once our convoy arrived at our destination, the Double Tree Hotel in Bakersfield, our invading army mustered in the hotel’s restaurant for lunch. Then some of us used the afternoon’s free time to explore the town, while others simply relaxed and socialized before the night’s festivities began.

In the evening, we gathered in the hotel lobby for our night at the famed Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace. Some of us walked the short distance, while others took advantage of the hotel van’s door-todoor service. The Crystal Palace has become a shrine to the brand of country western music made famous by musicians such as Mr. Owens and his world famous midcentury band, The Buckaroos, along with Continued on page 16 DER

Our PCA/SBR country western aficionados began their evening with a tour of the Buck Owens’ museum located on the premises.

The museum is dedicated solely to country western music and artists. We all enjoyed returning to those “thrilling days of yesteryear” as we looked at the enormous amount of memorabilia collected by Owens, including guitars, suits, albums, photographs and much more, all related to his career.

Next, we moved on to the Crystal Palace’s dinner showroom for a wonderful country western show. Although the Buckaroos still perform occasionally on weekends, this particular Saturday night featured a guest group. We were fortunate enough to be entertained by the Stampedes, who played a variety of music. In addition to the great music, we had a scrumptious, multi-course dinner. There was line dancing, as well as regular dancing, in which some of our members showed their real talent and stamina, while others of us simply watched, enjoying the music and dancers.

As the evening wore on, most of us started to yawn and moseyed back to the hotel and called it a night.

Sunday morning began with our group lining up at the hotel chuck wagon for a buffet breakfast. After that, we gathered in the

The park was an unusual experience. Although the structures have been reconstructed and restored, some of us experienced an eerie feeling that the ghosts of the original inhabitants were with us. We thoroughly enjoyed the docent’s tour and discussion of the town that Colonel Allensworth founded. We learned that Colonel Allen Allensworth established an independent, self-sufficient colony where African-Americans still suffering from the ravages of the Civil War and slavery could live free from discrimination.

This was the first town in California financed, built, and governed solely by African-Americans.

The town grew over the years. Ultimately, it had a school district, a judicial district, a library, as well as many other facilities.

People from all over the country came and settled in Allensworth.

Colonel Allensworth, by the way, fought in the Civil War and was the first African-American to achieve the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army.

Following the tour and picnic lunch, our little convoy broke up with each of us on our own. We all traveled south, back to the present-day reality from which we came. Once again, albeit a little short (only two days long), this became another great overnight Santa Barbara Region adventure, which is just one of the many reasons our club is unique! = More pictures on page 18

R.U.F. VISITS OXNARD’S

MULLIN MUSEUM

wenty-eight members of R.U.F. (Retired & Unemployed Folks) gathered together on February 20th for a private, docent-led tour of the sleek and artistically designed Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard. Like the beautiful automobiles, furniture and art pieces on display, the museum design incorporates the elegance and precision that is the hallmark of the influential art deco design style, which first appeared in France after World War I. As explained by our museum docent, art deco design is a marriage of fine art and industrial art, which yields sleek, functional shapes and visually alluring beauty.

The automobile collection is spread out on two floors with the premier cars primarily on the first floor. The Mullin collection includes some of the most beautifully styled and amazingly engineered French cars ever built. The ensemble covers several decades and includes Bugattis, DelaHayes, Hispano Suizas, Talbot-Lagos and Voisins. Jay Leno has called the Mullin collection the finest gathering of vintage French cars he has seen. Although there are a few modern Bugattis, most of the collection are pre- WWII cars. Several were disassembled before the war and hidden to avoid confiscation or destruction during the long conflict.

One of the unrestored cars on display, the “ Lady of the Lake,” is a 1930 Bugatti which was confiscated by Swiss authorities from its owner (who had won it in a card game) for non-payment of taxes. It was to be destroyed, but instead was sunk into Lake Maggiore where it languished for 75 years. Miraculously, it was retrieved and eventually acquired by the museum owner, James Mullin. Despite its time underwater, it still contained oil and was in remarkable condition.

Most of the cars viewed were impeccably restored and maintained, and the detail and design of them breathtakingly beautiful. Many of these cars have won numerous awards including Best of Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Also on display, in keeping with Mr. Mullin’s reverence for art deco design, were art glass, including several Lalique pieces, and many fine examples of furniture and furnishings from that period. Upstairs there was a lovely, completely furnished salon and bar in art deco style.

We were all very impressed by the museum structure, the extensive car collection and the manner in which the cars and other collectibles were displayed. Adding to our enjoyment was the opportunity to tour the museum privately with such a knowledgeable docent.

After the tour, we met for an enjoyable lunch at Yolanda’s Restaurant in the nearby Oxnard Harbor area. = DER

DIRECT FUEL INJECTION

very vehicle that Porsche currently offers is powered by a direct fuel injected (DFI) engine; even the Cayenne Diesel features a highpressure diesel injection system that is very similar to gasoline DFI. Fuel economy standards in the U.S., European Union, and elsewhere are ever-increasing, and most automakers have switched to smaller, more efficient DFI gasoline engines that are often turbocharged. The average DFI engine consumes 10-20% less fuel than a comparable engine with conventional port fuel injection, while offering increased performance. This month’s tech column will examine how DFI offers such benefits, and will discuss service and reliability concerns as well.

To fully understand DFI, a brief recap of traditional port fuel injection is instructive.

Porsche itself was a pioneer of electronic fuel injection (EFI), offering it as standard equipment in the 4-cylinder 914 of 1970. In a typical EFI system, an electric fuel pump draws fuel from the storage tank and pumps it to the fuel injection rail(s) mounted on the engine intake manifold.

A mechanical fuel pressure regulator determines the fuel pressure, and is mounted either in the engine compartment or inside the fuel tank in newer fuel systems. The fuel injector valve of each cylinder is mounted upstream of the intake valve(s), between the fuel rail and intake port.

Each fuel injector contains an electrical solenoid that opens the injector valve when signaled electronically, allowing pressurized fuel to spray in a fine mist from the injection nozzle and into the intake port. Each injector is activated during the beginning of the intake stroke of its corresponding cylinder; the vacuum in the cylinder draws the air/fuel mixture past the open intake valve(s) and into the combustion chamber, where the mixture is compressed and ignited by the spark plug as in any gasoline engine.

An electronic control unit (known as AUSPUFF APRIL 2014

the Digital Motor Electronics control unit or DME in Porsche-speak) contains drivers that activate each fuel injector at the specified interval. The DME control unit monitors input signals from various electronic sensors that measure intake air quantity and/or intake manifold vacuum, engine RPM, throttle position, engine temperature, and more. Based upon these input signals, the DME determines the optimal quantity of fuel to be injected during each intake cycle by altering the amount of time that each injector is open (known as pulse width). The desired air/fuel ratio for optimal combustion during any operating condition can be maintained for maximum performance and low exhaust emissions Electronic fuel injection offered vastly improved fuel efficiency and performance when compared to traditional carburetors and mechanical fuel injection systems.

Porsche used EFI in all of its vehicles

from the mid-1980s onward, as did most other manufacturers. Advancements in electronics and computing power during the ensuing decades allowed for ever more efficient and responsive EFI systems.

Despite the new heights of gasoline engine power output and efficiency achieved during the 1990s and 2000s, there were stringent fuel economy standards on the horizon that EFI engines simply would not be able to meet.

By the 2005 model year, Volkswagen/ Audi had introduced the first volumeproduction DFI system on its 2.0T turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. In typical fashion, Porsche first put its own DFI system through its paces on the race

circuit by installing it in the RS Spyder prototype race car of 2005-2010. Porsche’s production DFI system debuted in the 2008 model year Cayenne. The 2009 911 Carrera (997) and Boxster S/Cayman S (987) models followed suit (the base 2.9 liter 987 retained port injection), along with the 2010-2012 911 (997) Turbo. All Panameras use DFI, as well as all 2012 981 Boxster/Cayman and 991 911 models. The recently introduced 991 GT3 brings DFI to Porsche’s racetrack-ready model.

Despite the meticulous engineering and careful calibration of modern EFI systems, a small amount of fuel is wasted during each injection cycle. When fuel is injected behind the intake valves, a small amount of fuel condenses on the interior walls of the intake ports and cylinders.

DFI systems inject the perfect amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder, which maximizes fuel efficiency. The finely atomized mist of fuel creates a cooling effect in the combustion chamber, analogous to the evaporation of sweat from human skin. This allows for a higher compression ratio and improved engine performance. The fuel cooling affect is a particular boon to offsetting the extra heat produced in the combustion chambers of turbocharged engines.

Due to cost and technological limitations, DFI was not feasible in mass-produced engines until recently. The main barrier to DFI had been the extremely high fuel injection pressures required to inject fuel directly into the intense environment of a combustion chamber while maintaining fuel atomization and a precise spray pattern.

Conventional EFI fuel pressures are typically in the 30-60 PSI range, while direct injection requires considerably higher pressure of 500-2,000 PSI! To achieve such high fuel pressure, gasoline DFI systems use an engine-driven mechanical fuel injection pump to pressurize the fuel, much like that of a diesel engine.

Similarly to a conventional EFI system, an in-tank electric fuel pump delivers fuel from the tank to the engine, typically at 6075 PSI. Most Porsche DFI engines feature a single, high-pressure fuel pump driven

from the end of one of the camshafts.

The high-pressure pump has either three or six pistons to pressurize the fuel to the extent required for direct injection, which is usually about 500 PSI at idle, and almost 2,000 PSI at maximum RPM. A pump-mounted, electronically-controlled flow valve regulates the volume of fuel flow from the injection pump to the high pressure fuel rails. Fuel pressure sensors on both the low and high pressure circuits ensure that both are within specification at all times.

The DFI fuel injectors (pictured above) on Porsche engines are solenoid valves, but are much heavier duty than conventional injectors. Because of the massive spring pressure required to hold the injector valve closed against 2,000 PSI of fuel pressure, a full 75 volts are required to open the injector! The DFI electronic control unit contains voltage boosters to increase the required output voltage from the nominal 12-14 volts of the vehicle’s

achieve quick catalytic converter warmup. This allows for elimination of the secondary air injection system that was necessary for rapid catalyst warm-up on previous EFI Porsche engines (except on the 997/991 Turbo and the new 991 GT3).

Besides the precision injection pump and high-tech injectors, the DFI electronic control unit is largely responsible for the increased cost of producing a DFI car. Because of the multitude of fuel injection strategies possible, the amount of processing power and software programming is increased exponentially over that of an EFI/DME control unit.

The advanced microprocessor and aforementioned voltage boosters for the injector drivers dictate that the control unit be mounted on a heat sink for heat dissipation.

Porsche’s DFI systems have proven to be largely reliable thus far, likely because the system was race-proven before its installation in road cars. There have been some failures of the Cayenne/ Panamera high-pressure fuel pumps while under warranty, but this problem is not widespread. If high-pressure fuel pump failure occurs, the engine will continue to operate via the low-pressure circuit in a reduced output “limp-home” mode.

One advantage of traditional port EFI systems is the ability to clean the backsides of the intake valves with either the injected fuel or by using fuel injection treatments

also culpable in the severe carbon buildup problems of Porsche’s German rivals. It is strongly recommended to change the engine oil every 5,000-7,500 miles or once a year. This prevents the oil from becoming acidic, which can increase blowby emissions and creates the potential for increased carbon buildup on the intake valves.

Spark plug maintenance is also critical in DFI engines. Everything in a DFI combustion chamber is designed for a perfect burn of the air/fuel mixture, from the piston shape to the fuel injector placement and spray pattern to the spark plug location. Optimal DFI combustion depends on a precise spark “kernel” from the spark plug to provide a uniform burn of the fuel; a worn spark plug may not be able to provide this. Spark plug replacement intervals of modern EFI engines had increased to 100,000+ miles due to advances in spark plug technology, but the precision requirements of DFI engines have changed maintenance requirements. Porsche’s spark plug replacement intervals are 40,000 miles for normally aspirated engines, and 30,000 miles for turbocharged engines. While the spark plugs are out, any open intake valves can be inspected for carbon buildup by inserting a borescope through the spark plug hole. =

The cycling of the heavy duty injectors is the source of the diesel-like clatter that is sometimes audible from gasoline DFI engines at idle. such as Techron. In DFI engines, carbon deposits from oil vapors present in the intake manifold can build up on the intake valves. Severe carbon deposits can impede the flow of intake air, which causes rough engine running and reduced power output and fuel economy. The required repair is to remove the intake manifold and clean the carbon from the intake valves, either manually or with a walnut shell blaster.

This is a common occurrence in VW/Audi and BMW DFI engines in particular.

Thankfully, carbon buildup does not seem to be prevalent in Porsche’s DFI engines thus far. This is probably due to Porsche’s superior intake and breather/crankcase ventilation designs.

electrical system. The cycling of the heavy duty injectors is the source of the diesellike clatter that is sometimes audible from gasoline DFI engines at idle.

Another advantage of DFI is its capability of multiple fuel injections per cycle into each cylinder during certain engine running conditions, as the fuel injection is not dependent upon being drawn in by the intake stroke of each piston. Porsche’s DFI engines use either double or triple injection during full throttle at lower engine RPM to optimize combustion, and then switch to a large single injection pulse at higher engine speeds. When the engine is cold started, a second, late fuel injection pulse at the end of the compression stroke is used to rapidly heat up the exhaust and

The following reports and discussions were presented: Secretary: The January 2014 board meeting minutes were approved as submitted.

Vice President: No report.

Treasurer: Steve Kaller submitted the following financial statements for February 2014: (1) ending balance sheet, (2) profit & loss, and (3) statement of cash flow. In addition, he prepared a report showing profit-and-loss by event.

Membership: In February, 12 new members joined our region and membership stood at 726 at month’s end.

February membership is up 8 from last month.

Activities: Participation continues to increase at a steady rate. The Pindler to Palms event drew 140 people. This month, we have a two-day, overnight drive to Bakersfield. Sixty-eight paid members have signed up for this trip. In April, the Gimmick Rally returns and it is already filling up at a brisk pace.

Editor: April’s Der Auspuff is on schedule.

The editor is still working out a few kinks in the new all-color printing schedule, but reports good progress.

Distribution: 740 copies of Der Auspuff were mailed out in February. The cost of postage was $360, leaving a balance of $784. The annual bulk fee permit increased by $20 to $220. The Board approved reimbursement for the unexpected $20 increase.

Advertising: The total number of advertisers is now 27 with the recent return of Coachcraft. All advertisers are current on their ad accounts.

Goodie Store: Lots of new items are being added to the Goodie Store. The board approved a reimbursement request of $1320.94.

Insurance: Insurance coverage for all March events is up to date.

Rally: A Zone 8 Gimmick Rally is scheduled for April 26. There will not be a Santa Barbara Region T.S.D. rally this year.

Concours: No report.

Autocross: No report.

Archives: No report.

Webmaster: The PCASB.org website has been updated with current fliers and events information. March’s Der Auspuff was added to the homepage along with an abbreviated table of contents and the President’s column. The site’s header was updated with 50th Anniversary artwork.

Safety: No report.

Porsche Mademoiselle Society: The Board approved the name change for the women’s group and the appointment of Pamuela Hodson as the chairperson.

R.U.F.: No report.

50th Anniversary: Raffle ticket sales have lagged expectations and, as a result, all regions within Zone 8 have been invited to participate. Our 50th Anniversary Raffle will now be promoted to all PCA members within Zone 8.

Discussion was held on ways to increase sales, as well as the possible financial downside should sales not meet thresholds.

The celebration at the Fess Parker already

has 75 paid participants. A national PCA Board Member along with local and state officials will attend our luncheon and present proclamations honoring our region. Work on the souvenir journal has been completed.

Public Relations: No report.

Past President: The number of people who have signed up for the “Movie Night” has exceeded our expectations.

President: Several submittals have been made to the National PCA as follows: 1) New Member Social Subsidy for our Peking-To-Paris Movie night.

(Note $250 was just received from National) 2) Public Service/Charity Subsidy for our Street Survival School 3) Ferry Porsche trophy – PCA Region of the Year Award.

4) PCA Public Service Award for our charity/community service work in 2013 5) Submission for the Betty Jo Turner Award for best National Newsletter.

The winner of these awards will be announced at the June National Porsche Parade in Monterey.

Old Business: None New Business: The Board approved the appointment of Pamuela Hodson as the chair of Porsche Mademoiselle Society.

The Board approved of a $700 deposit for airport rental of the runway and a conference room in support of the Street Survival event.

The May Board Meeting will be held at Ameci’s Pizza & Pasta Restaurant in Thousand Oaks.

All event coordinators are reminded that individual participants must personally sign their own waiver forms.

Students are given two hours of classroom training interspersed with a series of driving exercises with a coach while driving their own car. Students practice various braking and avoidance exercises using a variety of cone configurations, and they practice controlling their cars on a wet skid pad.

Challenging courses are created in a controlled area to allow the students to experience abnormal car behavior, and then learn the proper way to handle the new situation. This provides the students with useful skills to help avoid accidents, and to learn how to keep their cars under control in a skid.

THE LAST WORD

No Good Deed...

W

hen the management of the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village asked SBR for some assistance, we were eager to help. To backtrack just a moment...Porsche Cars North America had selected two sites in Southern California as potential spots for a Porsche Macan rollout event, the Four Seasons being one of them. Hotel management wanted to impress the PCNA scouting committee, who were scheduled to visit on Friday morning, March 14, with a display of several eras of Porsches to greet them.

That’s where SBR came in. Could we assemble such a grouping of Porsches to impress the PCNA troops? And in return, would we like to join them for a complimentary breakfast? Yes. And yes.

Fast forward to March 14. Upon our arrival at the hotel, the circular drive (pictured at left), where the staging of our vehicles was to take place, had three mini-vans blocking access. While the 12 SBR Porsches patiently waited for the hotel staff to find the offending drivers to move their vans, the PCNA scouting committee completed their tour of the hotel property and hastily left for the airport.

By the time we finally got our cars assembled, the PCNA crew was long gone. But the hotel management, apologizing for the unpredictable schedule change, treated our group to that delicious breakfast anyway...and the wonderful photo opportunity you see on this month’s cover: Rick Principe’s always impressive silver Carrera GT parked next to Wayne & Houri Greko’s timeless 356 Speedster.

By the way, the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village will be the site of our 2014 Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, October 12. Save the date! =
