Editor's Letter

Stewart Thompson

I have some wonderful news to share. If you read last month's letter, you know I was sitting in a hospital waiting room as I wrote it. I am thrilled to report that Ezra Lenihan arrived on July 19th at 11:39 PM, a very healthy 9.7 pounds and 21 inches of pure joy. I could not be more proud of my sister Athena, who stepped into mom mode without missing a beat, or of my brother-in-law Isaac, who showed remarkable strength and grace through every moment of it. Please join me in welcoming this little guy to the world. He will have absolutely no choice but to become a PANDO reader. Now, onto the cars. This month's theme is one I selfishly love. The Other Garage celebrates the vehicles in our lives that are not Porsches but matter just as much to the people who own them. Because the truth is, most of us came from somewhere before we arrived here. A first car, a project car, a family hand-me-down, something rare, something strange, something that nobody else quite understood but you. I believe cars are works of art. All kinds of cars. And there is so much beautiful, interesting, and surprising automotive art out there that rarely gets celebrated. I have had some memorable cars in my life and I look forward to many more. Porsche will always be a constant, but the automotive world is wide and wonderful and this issue is a reminder of that. I hope reading through these stories gives you the same feeling it gives me. That warm recognition of a fellow car person who just genuinely loves the thing they drive. Welcome, Ezra. You are going to fit right in around here.

The Other Garage, Zuffenhausen Edition Story by Stewart Thompson This month we asked you to tell us about the cars that came before the Porsche. The truck that put you through college. The roadster that taught you patience. The motorcycle that gave you your first taste of freedom. It occurred to me that Porsche itself deserves the same question. Because a Porsche did not arrive from nowhere. Every trait we consider sacred—the rear engine, the air-cooled flat six, and the shape that has barely changed in sixty years— came from somewhere else first. Porsche's genius was rarely pure invention. It was synthesis. Take a good idea, refine it relentlessly, and then keep it for six decades while everyone else moves on. Here is what was in Porsche's other garage.

The engine went in the back because of a motorcycle company. Long before Zuffenhausen built its own cars, Ferdinand Porsche's design office took contract work. In 1931 that meant the Zündapp Type 12, a rear-engined small car for a motorcycle manufacturer. In 1933 it meant the NSU Type 32, the same basic idea. By 1934 the mid-engined Auto Union Grand Prix cars put the engine behind the driver entirely. Historian Peter Kirchberg has argued that the mid-engine concept may have originated not with Porsche but with Adolf Rosenberger, the firm's Jewish business partner, who had raced the mid-engined Benz Tropfenwagen and pushed the design team toward the layout. Rosenberger was forced out of the company in 1935 and later imprisoned. His contribution went largely unacknowledged for decades. The rear-engine formula also appeared in Hans Ledwinka's Tatras in Czechoslovakia. Ferdinand Porsche reportedly admitted looking over Ledwinka's shoulder. Tatra's owners

sued for patent infringement; the case was halted when Germany annexed Czechoslovakia, and it was reopened after the war. Volkswagen eventually settled. The amount and date vary by source, with one million Deutsche marks in 1965 the most commonly cited figure and Curbside Classic reporting three million in 1961. Neither Ledwinka nor Tatra's Czech operation received any of it.

The boxer engine belongs to Karl Benz We consider the flat engine to be Porsche's signature. It is not Porsche's invention. Per Mercedes-Benz Group's own company history, Karl Benz developed what he called the contra engine in 1896, named because the pistons were arranged opposite each other. That is the forerunner of every boxer built since. What Porsche brought was a preference for air cooling, and that came from the sky. Ferdinand Porsche designed a four-cylinder airship engine that flew in 1909, reported at somewhere between 60 and 70 horsepower depending on the source, and he spent the First World War designing aircooled aircraft engines. Air cooling meant no radiator, no water pump, and no hoses. Less cost, less weight, and an engine compact enough to tuck behind the rear axle. The trade came later. Air-cooled heads could practically accommodate only two valves per cylinder until water cooling arrived in the eighties. Every air-cooled 911 we love carries that limitation as part of its character.

The shape came from a rejected prototype The 911 silhouette did not spring from a single sketch. It descended from a chain of prototypes, most importantly the Type 754 T7 of 1960 and 1961, a four-seat notchback. Porsche's own Newsroom credits the T7 with the flattened bonnet between free-standing wings, the inclined built-in headlights, and the A-pillar and windscreen relationship. Ferry Porsche rejected the notchback roof and insisted on a fastback. The wheelbase shrank from 2.40 meters to 2.20, sacrificing usable rear seats for that roofline. Who actually designed it remains contested. Porsche credits Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche. Erwin Komenda, who shaped both the Beetle body and the 356, led the production bodywork. Komenda's family sued at the Stuttgart Regional Court, a case Porsche disclosed in its IPO prospectus, arguing Komenda deserves the credit. The dispute is unresolved. One popular claim is simply wrong. The 911 was not designed around its rear engine. A flat six is only three cylinders long, short enough to hang behind the axle without dictating proportions. The car's shape owes far more to that tall forward windscreen and the single sweep to a very low tail.

What Porsche gave away The exchange ran both directions, and this is the part most enthusiasts never hear. Porsche's synchromesh design was licensed across the industry. Porsche's own press materials cite more than 200 patents protecting the work and more than a million gearboxes built by licensees. Torsion bar suspension was a genuine Ferdinand Porsche patent filed in 1931, German patent DE623747A, and Citroën put it into series production before Porsche did. (Article continues on page 8)

Then there is the consulting work. Porsche built a four-door prototype for Studebaker in the early fifties, documented by marque historian Karl Ludvigsen. Porsche Diesel tractors were produced under license, with totals reported between roughly 120,000 and 125,000 units from 1956 to 1963. Porsche engineered the SEAT Ibiza's engine, which is why early cars wore a System Porsche badge. Porsche developed the Lada Samara. And during the lean early nineties, Porsche hand-assembled the Mercedes-Benz 500E and the Audi RS2 Avant in the same Zuffenhausen building that built the 959. Harley-Davidson's Revolution engine for the V-Rod was developed at Weissach. Underpinning all of it, a 1948 agreement with Volkswagen paid Porsche a royalty of roughly five marks on every Beetle built. That money bought the independence that made everything else possible.

Two ideas that started somewhere else The ducktail is the most recognizable aerodynamic device Porsche ever built, and it came from a young engineer noticing something about a Fiat. Tilman Brodbeck was twenty-six, an aerospace graduate of Darmstadt Technical University, when he joined Porsche in October 1970. He had modified his own Fiat 850 Coupé, including a small flick on the engine cover, and he could not shake the sense that it felt more planted at speed. He brought the instinct to work with him. The team built a rough spoiler from wire and Tilman Brodbeck sheet metal and put a 911 in the wind tunnel. Within two days the rear lift coefficient had dropped from 0.29 to 0.08, roughly two-thirds gone, and top speed rose by 4.5 kilometers per hour. Porsche filed a patent, disclosure number 2238704, on 5 August 1972.

8 PANDO | September 2026

The 1972 Carrera RS 2.7 became the first production car in the world to wear a rear spoiler as standard equipment. The other story goes the opposite direction, from the car outward. In 1972, Butzi Porsche, who had already given the world the 911 silhouette, designed the Porsche Design Chronograph 1. It was the first all-black wristwatch ever made, and it was not styled to match the Butzi Porsche car in some vague way. He modeled it directly on the black instrument dials of the 911, the same white-on-black legibility, the same refusal to decorate. A man who designed a car then put its gauges on your wrist.

One more thing You have probably heard that the ignition sits on the left because of the running Le Mans start. Key in the left hand, shifter in the right, precious seconds saved. Porsche's own owner's manuals have repeated it for years. The evidence does not support it. Before 1967, only two Le Mans Porsches carried a left-side key, and both were 356-based. The purpose-built racers kept the key beside the shifter, where it made more sense. The 928 and 944 used right-side ignitions entirely, which is difficult to explain if the placement were a racing tradition worth preserving. The actual origin is less romantic and considerably more interesting. On 356-001, hand-built in Gmünd in 1948, the ignition went to the left to shorten a run of copper wire. Copper was scarce in postwar Austria. They were saving material. That is the whole story of this marque in a single detail. A constraint became a habit. The habit became a signature. The signature became something we will defend in a parking lot seventy-eight years later, and we will be defending a decision made because a small company could not spare the wire. Every car in your garage came from somewhere. So did this one.

What Else is in My Garage?

hat else is in my garage? An infiltrator, in the form of a new C-8 Corvette.

a new red Boxster GTS. It’ll probably be my last car, and it reminds me of my first car, a bright red MGA.

I’ve had “poor man’s Porsches” since the ‘60s—a ’66 VW Bug and a “built” ’67 Karmann Ghia—then in 1998, I went “middle-age crazy” and bought my ’89 Targa. It’s been a reliable old friend all these years, but every once in a while, I thought of selling the Targa and getting something with real A/C that doesn’t steer like a truck. Then I’d go drive it and realize how badly I’d miss the Targa. So, three years ago, my wife Ruthie and I decided that, as they say, if I don’t buy a new Porsche, our grandkids will; I ordered

So, the ‘Vette: When I first met Ruthie in 1999, she had a month-old torch red C-5 Corvette. She loved that car, but when the first grandkid came along and car seats appeared in our future, it was apparent that the Corvette had to go in favor of an SUV. Fast forward 12 years, no more car seats, so Ruthie wanted her Corvette back. The C-8s are recently released, so she ordered another torch red ‘Vette. I am a loyal Porschephile and definitely not a Corvette person (even though I have a bit of a paunch, wear white T-shirts, and love ‘60s music), but

10 PANDO | September 2026

By Jim Storms I’ll admit, it’s a terrific car. It looks so exotic that everyone asks for a ride in it, not my GTS, even though they have very similar performance stats. To top it off, Ruthie sent me to the Ron Fellows [Corvette] Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain Raceway. That’s where I learned how to use the

amazing features of the car, many of which the GTS doesn’t have, and what a capable track car it is, even in stock form. I’m afraid I had to change my impression of big old “Detroit iron” (actually, Kentucky fiberglass). But I’m still a Porsche guy, and Ruthie loves her “Vette.”

O

ur 1962 E-Type was born in January, 1962 in England, the same month I was born in California. My dad traded up from his XK-120 a few months later, and it has been in our family ever since. Dad was a hands-on engineer. He fixed everything and built many things. His last adventure at JPL was as mission manager, flying a spacecraft past a comet’s tail, catching the dust, and bringing it back to earth. Growing up, there were a few SCCA trophies on the shelf. Mom said they would win car rallies. Dad drove, and mom was the navigator. I found 8 mm film of mom drifting their MGA around a corner on a dirt road in the 50s. As a little kid, I followed dad everywhere and learned so much. He took a picture of me changing the spark plugs and had me help with so many things. My little kid hands could get into all the tight places. Over the years, we pulled the head, steering rack, fuel pump, rear end, replaced the top, and many other projects. By the time I got to grade school he would let me shift the Jaguar while he worked the clutch. I could tell from the sounds and feel of the car when to shift gears. No Syncro in 1st gear!

12 PANDO | September 2026

During the gas crunch, he made a deal with a co-worker to trade it for a fuel-efficient Chevy Vega. I pleaded that I wanted to drive the Jaguar someday, and the deal was off. By high school, he let me drive him to JPL and drive myself to high school. I would go pick him up at the end of the day. We lived a mile away, so it was an easy drive. I drove the Jaguar to prom and sometimes to college if my Mustang was not running. Photo below is dad with the carburetor getting ready for a rebuild. Our modern gas with ethanol is pretty tough on the rubber bits in there. I had to get into them too.

Young Rob assisting dad with spark plugs.

My parents passed away in 2016 and 2017; now the car is mine. When my son got married, they had the reception at the Peterson Museum. We brought the Jaguar to have my parents there in spirit. Above is a picture of me and my sister going off to school with our youngest sister saying goodbye. We recreated the shot at the wedding reception.

I had a 2006 Cayenne Turbo S and traded it in for a newer one in 2014. They are wonderful to drive through mountains, snow, and dirt roads, or just fly down the 405. If I had a bigger garage, I would love an air-cooled Porsche that I could tinker with.

My Favorite Non-Porsche By Scott White

A

lthough my Porsche garage history goes back to 1980 when my first Porsche was a 1977 911S, my “other garage” has always been an eclectic mix of fun and less-fun vehicles. For many years, it didn’t include a Porsche at all. My favorite non-Porsche though, has been my 2002 Mercedes C32 AMG. When I began my real estate career, I needed a nice four-door sedan that fit the profession. A lease return AMG from a Southern California Mercedes-Benz dealer was just right. That was 20 years ago, and I still own the C32. Somehow, it still makes me smile every time I drive it. It is no longer my daily driver. COVID changed my business, so we rarely drive clients around now. These days, my Boxster S handles daily-driver duty. The AMG was my attempt to blend Porsche-like fun with the practicality of a sedan. I preferred the smaller C-Class for several reasons, including how easily it fit in the “other garage.” Its 350-hp, supercharged 3.2-liter V6 was hand-built by AMG, and it remains the car’s best feature. Even at 24 years old and 167,000 miles, the C32 can still outrun the Boxster S in a straight line. The C32 was also the car both of my sons learned to drive in. We enrolled them in a driving school that included 16 hours of intensive skills training in the old Verizon Amphitheater parking lot. At the end, the students took their parents through the “final exam” course. Both of my sons were excellent, A+ drivers, and the instructors singled each of them out for their skill. I know they are talented, but I like to think the old AMG helped earn those high marks. I also had a few chances to take the C32 around Fontana Raceway and autocross courses. It held its own, even chasing a GT3 RS, at spirited parade-lap speeds. I know I will eventually need to let this little old car move onto a new caretaker. For now, it still gets occasional use on workdays, when I need to carry signs or other work materials that won’t fit in a Boxster, or when our Golden Retriever needs a run at a park. The Car That Started It All.

I'

By Billy Hufnagel ve owned a few cars in my life, according to my wife Patty, I’ve owned too many, but let’s not get into that. When people ask me what my favorite car was I quickly answer without hesitation, “My first car.” When I started high school in 1971 my Dad told me that he would not be able to afford to buy me a car. I would have to save up on my own. I totally understood. I graduated in June 1974 with over $2,000 in the bank. Not too bad at $1.65 per hour. I was now on the search for a car. About 2 weeks after graduation my Dad came into my bedroom and said, “Let’s talk.” He told me he had just bought me a car. I was shocked and confused. He then told me he had been buying savings bonds every payday for my “Car Fund” and I had proven to him that I

16 PANDO | September 2026

could save enough to buy my own car. I now had money to actually afford the car maintenance, insurance, etc. But what did he buy me? It was a red 1972 VW Superbeetle with only 24,000 miles. Of course it was a VW, my parents were German immigrants. The car was located about 3 blocks from our home. We walked there together, paid for the car and my Dad drove it home. Since I did not know how to drive a stick shift I received a couple of days of instruction and I was on my own! The perfect first car. College commuter, surf board racks fit perfectly and being rear engine and air cooled I drove it like a Porsche. After all, it was designed and engineered by a guy named Ferdinand Porsche. That’s the car that started it all. Thanks Dad!

“Gia,” Our Little Red Fiat

P

By Stephen Armstrong

rince may have sung about “a little red Corvette,” but when Fiat decided to pay homage to one of the most historically significant automobiles in the postWorld War era with a relaunch of the much-loved Fiat 500, my wife and I knew (okay, mainly me) that we had to have one in our family! Looking for the full “la dolce vita” experience, we opted for a rosso brillante cabriolet with the wonderfully retro canvas top in red. Not only does all of the sky flood into the cabin when the roof retracts, but the roof pillars remain upright for a wonderfully distinctive and classic vibe. We opted for two-tone red and white leather seats with 500 Cabrio stitching in the seats to be fully committed to our cinquecento. My wife promptly picked an Italian name for her new car, and “Gia,” which is short for “cilegia” or “cherry” in Italian, was warmly welcomed to our family. Since we picked up our “little red Fiat” in 2013, we have enjoyed nearly 100k miles of pleasure in and around Southern California. The car has been a reliable member of our garage and has risen to the task of being a little sister to our Cayman S. With neither car being large, we have had to get creative on many occasions. One Christmas, we did not have access to a large car to pick up a fresh Christmas tree, so we decided Gia was going to go for it! We opened the roof entirely, moved up the front seats, and stood an 8’ Christmas tree upright on the floor behind the front seats. We kissed any hint of aerodynamics good-bye as we drove slowly home with the tree buffeting in the wind! My seat was so close to the steering wheel that while my hands may have been at “9” and “3,” my elbows were thrust out in each direction like the arms of a grandfather clock! I think I must have looked like a crazed driver before you even got to the 8’ tree behind me!! But we made it home safe and sound with honks of encouragement from others on the road. Our cinquecento will hopefully have a forever home in our garage just like our Porsche. With no four-door sedans, SUVs, vans, or pickup trucks, our garage may be a little unorthodox, but despite having two small cars, it’s been surprisingly practical too. But most importantly, each time we enter our garage, we can’t help but smile!

Santa Monica Mountains Tour arly morning starts are ideal for beating traffic and setting a great tone for the day — something PCA-OCR members get to enjoy on a regular basis. This event, curated by Paul Shaffer, began with registration at 7:30, a drivers' meeting at 7:45, and the first group departing just before 8:00. The tour was organized into three groups totaling roughly 26 cars, with each group departing 8–10 minutes apart. Having grown more familiar with this process, I was set to sweep for Group 3, building on what we learned from our prior drive to Santa Rosa Plateau. We started at Los Liones Park in Pacific Palisades, descended to PCH, and headed north to Topanga Canyon before climbing back up through the canyons. From there we transitioned onto Tuna Canyon, dropped back down to PCH, turned right, and continued north to Las Flores Canyon. Aside from a quick bio-break on PCH in Malibu, the drive was spectacular, with views rarely seen in this area and tree-covered canyon carving at its best. The roads were excellent, and although we shared them with cyclists and several other groups, it remained a great drive as we worked our way steadily north, canyon after canyon. 20 PANDO | September 2026

Our inRoute guide kept us on track to the next bio-break stop. After the break, we continued on through Mulholland Highway, Cold Canyon Road, Piuma Road, and Malibu Canyon, then headed north to Latigo Canyon, Kanan Dume Road, and many more as the day went on. It was fascinating to see the diverse changes across the canyons — from unique structures and home sites to horse properties and small niche towns with little stores I never would have guessed existed in this area. As we neared the end of the route, we rejoined Mulholland Highway for a stretch, passing well-known landmarks like The Snake, the Rock Store, and Paramount Ranch, among other visual highlights. Of course, the true purpose of these drives is to build community within the Porsche Club and among fellow drivers. With more than 50 years of passion for Porsche, I can say without reservation that this is some of the most fun you can have cruising with friends, both new and old, in cars built for canyon carving — all while driving at safe, legal speeds,

- Canyons to the Sun observing posted signs, and taking extra care for pedestrians and cyclists along the way. My wife and I can't wait for the next event — the poker run coming up in September. Hats off to Paul, Jay, Monica, and the entire team it takes to put these drives together. Their road knowledge is beyond compare, and everyone has

Story by Mark Rabens Photos by Colleen Rabens

a great time, whether leading or sweeping any one of the groups. And yes, the lunch at Plata Taqueria & Cantina was just what the doctor ordered to re-energize for the run back to Orange County and home. Another great OCR event in the books, and more to follow.

Angie’s Story

As told to Monica Asbury by Angie Kardashian Photos by Jim Storms

his month and year is the 25th Anniversary of 9-1-1. We thought it pertinent to share a story of our own local hero, who was determined to make a difference and extend a helping hand in light of the catastrophic event that occurred on September 11, 2001. Angie Kardashian's remarkable life journey epitomizes the spirit of resilience, community service, and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Angie moved to California at the age of 21, eventually establishing herself as a top sales leader at Georgia Pacific. However, after seven successful years, she sought a new adventure and opened Angie’s Cuisine Italiano in Tustin, California. What began as a personal pursuit quickly transformed into a longstanding commitment to her community. For over two decades, Angie not only served classic Italian dishes in her warm and inviting restaurant but also became a beloved figure in Tustin. Angie's life took a transformative turn after the events of September 11, 2001. Motivated by the tragedy and her desire to help those affected, she sold her restaurant of 22 years and traveled to New York City to support firefighters in the aftermath of the attacks. Over the course of two years, Angie prepared meals for 103 fire companies and became an honorary firefighter, solidifying her status as a dedicated humanitarian. Her selfless actions during this period inspired countless others and shed light on the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis. Today, Angie continues to inspire others with her story. As a flight attendant for JetBlue, she not only maintains her connections with New York’s community but also shares her journey through speeches and volunteer work in Tustin. Her commitment to service and her passion for making a difference serve as a powerful reminder of the impact each person can have, no matter the scale. She calls her story “THE POWER OF ONE” Angie Kardashian, with her unwavering spirit, is a testament to the idea that one individual truly can change the world around them. Angie has been an active OCR member since 2020 and drives a 1986 red 911 Carrera. September 2026 | PANDO 23
