e all are fortunate to own such amazing cars. The looks, the handling, just the incredible feeling it is to drive a Porsche, whatever the flavor. That is why the driving events this year have been well attended and a blast to participate in. Many of us have just finished the Palm Springs/La Quinta drive, and you just had to see the smiling faces to understand the wonderful time we had. I am not sure if you all had the opportunity to attend an ÜnSTOCK event. If not, you are in luck, as on November 8, OCR is supporting this year’s ÜnSTOCK locally at the Huntington Beach Pier. Spectators are free, and the event runs from 10:00 am until 2:00 p.m. Come check out the Porsches, which all have at least three visible modifications. You might even get an idea for your own Porsche. Speaking of driving opportunities, on November 21, Paul Shaffer will be leading the “Seeing Double Tour,” which will be launching from Azusa. Be on the lookout for more information and how to sign up, as it will be another fun drive. December 6th is OCR’s Holiday Dinner, and spots are quickly filling up. If you have not already done so, you can register at www.msreg.com/pcaocr26. As always, you can count on an awesome silent auction. The proceeds benefit Semper Fi, a very worthy cause. If you can donate something for the auction or know somebody who might donate to this worthy cause, please contact Monica Asbury at sheamonica@gmail.com

Jim and Norma Miller

Lastly, don’t forget our Annual Toy Drive on December 12th in Huntington Beach, where we partner with the Huntington Beach Police Department and their K-9 and Equestrian teams and static swat display. As always, the Marines will be there collecting the toys and displaying their howitzer, Humvee, and other hardware. Please bring an unwrapped toy. Each year our membership has demonstrated their generosity; I am sure this year will be no exception. Let us continue to make PCA-OCR a special part of our Porsche experience. Participate, volunteer, and let the ride bring a huge smile to your face! Jim Miller PCA-OCR President

ÜnSTOCK, Personal Vision I can hardly believe we are into fall already. It is my favorite time of year, and we are fortunate to live in a part of the country where the weather rarely keeps us from getting out and driving. That said, this is also the season when conditions can turn, so if I ask one thing of you this month, it is this. Please be safe out there. Now, I don't think I have ever told the story of how I ended up in this chair. It will be two years in January. I was at my second ÜnSTOCK, volunteering, having a great time, and catching up with a high school friend I had not seen since 2006. That number ages me more than I would like. At some point during the day Monica pulled me aside, busy as she was, and told me about an opportunity coming up. Editor of PANDO. I am still not entirely sure what she saw in me or why she thought I would be a good fit, but the powers that be made it happen. It landed at exactly the right moment, too. Things in my life had gotten a little too quiet, and I needed something more to do. This turned out to be it. So ÜnSTOCK holds a special place for me now, because of where it led. I love this work. It is fun, it is rewarding, and it gives me the first look at your stories and your cars, which has only deepened my own love of this hobby. Which makes this month’s theme the right one for a thank you. ÜnSTOCK is about personal vision, about the choices that make a car yours rather than anyone else’s, and I have come to think the club works the same way. So, thank you, Monica, for whatever it was you saw. Thank you to PANDO for taking me in and for creating opportunities like this one. Thank you to the organizers who make all of it run, to the readers who make it worth doing, and to the contributors who bring the spice and flavor we love to read. Thank you, everyone. Stuttgart Market Letter Report by David K. Whitlock

C

oming off a strong August, the Porsche market felt noticeably softer in September. While unit volume actually increased to 766 cars and dollar volume remained strong at $56,513,890, the sell-through rate slipped to 72%, down from 73% in August and 75% in September of last year. That three-point year-over-year decline was the largest we’ve seen so far in 2026. The numbers certainly weren’t bad, especially considering dollar volume was up more than $12m and 110 additional Porsches crossed the block compared to September 2025, but bidders appeared to be a little more selective with their money. The 991 and 992 market was dominated by the GT2 RS, with eight examples crossing the block. Coming off the million-dollar sale we saw at the end of July, it appears sellers decided it was time to get theirs to market. Topping the bunch was a non-Weissach Package 2019 911 GT2 RS with just 237 miles that came finished in Paint-to-Sample Signal Yellow and sold for an impressive $850,000. We also saw a pair of 2023 911 Sport Classics sell for $700,000 each after not seeing one sell since June. One came finished in the standard Sport Gray Metallic and showed just 120 miles, while the other had 842 miles but came finished in Paintto-Sample Azzurro Thetys Metallic. If I were making the choice, I think I would have taken the miles. Azzurro Thetys looked fantastic on the Sport Classic. 996s had a stellar month, posting a 79% sell-through rate and some solid results. Topping the market was a Black on Black 2001 911 GT2 Clubsport that sold for $451,000, while a pair of 996.2 GT3s continued the model’s recent move upward with sales of $208,000 and $134,000. On the 997 front, GT3 RSs brought big bids but failed to find new homes, including a Paint-to-Sample 2011 911 GT3 RS that failed to sell at $725,000, which would have been a new twelve-month high by $100,000. 997 Turbos kept their momentum going, with three Blue examples selling for more than $200,000, led by an Ice Blue Metallic 2011 911 Turbo Coupe with 23,000 miles and a six-speed manual transmission at $320,000. One of my predictions for 2026, which I made at PCA’s Tech Tactics back in February, was that we’d see the Boxster and Cayman market rise with the axe of the ICE-powered 718s. While it took a few months to come to fruition, we definitely saw signs of it in September. Excluding the 718, Boxsters and Caymans posted an impressive 89% sell-through rate, while average prices jumped $5,632 month over month. A 3,500-mile 981 GT4 set a new twelve-month high at $142,000, while a 13,800-mile 981 Boxster Spyder did the same at $125,981. Even the 718 GT market showed some life. A 2023 718 Cayman GT4 RS Weissach sold for a twelve-month high of $221,000, while a Paint-to-Sample Gulf Orange 2024 718 Spyder RS with 1,600 miles brought a super-strong $265,100. Moving back a few generations, 964s and 993s finished September with 49 examples crossing the block for a 69.4% sell-through rate. Topping the group was a Guards Red 1997 911 Turbo S with 24,000 miles that brought $852,000, but what caught my attention was the lack of 993 Carrera 4S examples coming to market. After seeing nine in August, just three crossed the block in September. Non-Turbo 964s had a harder time, with a sell-through rate just over 60%, although one highmileage Widebody bucked the trend. Showing 172,000 miles, a 1994 911 Carrera 4 Coupe 5-speed Widebody sold for an impressive $201,964 following an extensive refurbishment completed in 2025. Looking at the

G-Body and 930 market, the top of the list was filled with the usual Turbos and Speedsters, led by a 14,000-mile 1986 911 Turbo Coupe finished in Meteor Metallic over Black that sold for $311,000. We also saw a number of regular Carrera 3.2s sneak past $100,000 along with a fantastic Caramel Brown over Tan 1981 911SC Coupe with 61,000 miles and documentation dating back to new that brought $107,500. Topping the Transaxle, 912, and 914 market was Porsche Las Vegas’ 2025 Classic Restoration Challenge car, fitting given that Porsche Area East’s 2026 Classic Restoration Challenge was held at the Audrain Concours this past weekend. The 1988 944 Turbo S, which was crowned the Preservation National Champion last year, finished in Guards Red over Black with 75,000 miles and sold for $95,000, setting a new twelve-month high by more than $35,000. The 914/6 market, on the other hand, continued to soften. Two examples crossed the block with just one selling and both attracting bids below $80,000. The lone sale was a Metallic Blue 1970 914/6 at $73,000, still a fraction of the prices we were seeing for these cars just a few years ago. The 356 market was more of the same, with just 57.9% of the 19 cars on offer finding new homes. Although the sell-through rate remained low, we still saw some impressive bids, led by $945,000 for a 1959 356A Carrera 1600 GT Speedster. Purchased new through Max Hoffman, the car was a regional SCCA champion in 1969 and later earned Best in Class at the 2021 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. Unfortunately, even with a bid just shy of $1 million, it landed in the no-sale column. The Classic 911 market was also a bit sluggish, managing a 60% sell-through rate from just 10 examples. Topping that group was a 1970 911S Coupe 5-speed finished in Metallic Blue over Beige leatherette with corduroy inserts. After being removed from auction in August due to an error with its Porsche Classic Technical Certificate, it returned with the certificate corrected and sold for an impressive $172,500. September may have felt softer, but there were still plenty of strong individual results, especially for the best examples in each market. October should give us a good look at whether September’s drop in sell-through rate was just a post-summer slowdown or something worth keeping an eye on. As far as live auctions go, the only sale on the docket is Broad Arrow’s Audrain Concours Auction, along with our usual slate of online sales. We’ll see if bidders remain selective or if things pick back up as we head into the final quarter of the year. David K. By Stewart Thompson odifying cars shaped my youth. It started in 2001, with The Fast and the Furious. That movie took an underground scene that had been quietly thriving for years and put it on a screen in front of every kid in America. Suddenly we all knew that cars could be more than what the factory sent out, and that some were built to show off, and some were built to race. Every one of them said something about the person who built it. And as wild of a concept as it was, it worked, and it worked so very well. Then came the video games. Need for Speed and Midnight Club turned customization into something you could do yourself, endlessly, for free, and at any time. I was already a car kid. I had grown up on Top Gear, and I more or less taught myself to drive with Gran Turismo. Put all of that together, and the idea of modifying my own car was not just exciting, it was the only thing I wanted to do. Then, like everything else at that age, reality showed up in the form of money. My first car was a 1993 BMW 325i, and it got my first modification, a cold air intake. My buddy Adam Knapik helped me install it, which is funny to think about now that he has gone on to become a professional drift driver. From there we blacked out the tail lights, which was completely illegal, and worked our way through whatever other cheap modifications we could find to make the car feel fast and look mean. Something he reminded me of was that one of the modifications we made, made the speakers whine up as the cars RPMs got higher. We could never figure it out, but it was a funny memory. (continued on page 9)

My Path to ÜnStock (continued from page 8)

There was a senior at my school with a beautiful E36 M3, and he was my idol. I had no realistic hope of getting there, but by goodness, I was going to do everything I could to make my four-door German sedan look like it was in the same family. Something I did not appreciate at the time was the idea of taking something already remarkable, something engineered to a painstaking degree by people far smarter than you, and then deciding you can improve it. This is a little ludicrous when you say it out loud. And yet that is exactly what makes a car yours. Wheels, exhaust, suspension, brakes, ride height, or something nobody else would even notice. Every one of those decisions is a fingerprint. When that car goes down the road, everyone who sees it knows two things. Somebody chose this, and there is not another one exactly like it anywhere. That is why I love ÜnSTOCK. Modifying a car teaches you things that ownership alone never will. It adds knowledge, understanding, appreciation, and a real respect for how the thing was put together in the first place. Anyone can start swapping parts, but the car gets a vote. It responds to what you do, and it tells you honestly whether the change was a good one. In that sense a car is a little like a pet. You can shape its personality toward what you want, but it already has one of its own, and you do not get to override it.

10 PANDO | November 2026

You cannot bolt a cold air intake onto everything and expect more power. I have learned that the hard way since those early days, and in some cases a poorly chosen intake will cost you performance or do real harm to an engine. My 996 is a good example. From what I have found, adding a California legal intake actually gives up horsepower rather than making any, so it is not a modification I would do. Not unless I were prepared to go further and replace the throttle body, the plenum, and the intake manifolds along with them. If money were no object, I might. But money is always part of it, and so the real skill in all of this is balance. That is the other thing I love about this hobby. Some of these cars take years to become what their owner is after. This means a lot of what you see at any given event is a car in the middle of its journey rather than at the end of it. Following along with that is genuinely exciting. It is a long road with a lot of setbacks, a fair amount of money, and friends picked up along the way. This is to say it has more in common with Frodo walking to Mordor than most people would admit. (LOTR reference...) So come out to ÜnSTOCK this month. I would love to see you there. I want to see your vision, your dream, and your progress. Let’s celebrate this whole thing: the wild builds and the tame ones, the tasteful and the completely impractical. Every one of those cars is somebody’s baby, and they love it. Which is exactly why I love it too.

GEM RS

A

sk many Porsche fans “What is your dream Porsche,” and the answer is often repeated: GT3 RS. Lisa Kerns, known as “Porsche Mom” to many of us, has gone through a gamut of Porsches since 2004. The one theme not meeting her ultimate dream of “Fast and Wing” was finally satisfied by Zephyr Motorworks in Fountain Valley, her shop of choice for tailoring her many past Porsches. When she mentioned that she wanted her next to be a fantastic looking street car, a GT3 RS as a daily driver, they pushed back in a wise way. Suggesting a Carrera converted with all the RS visuals, it was the perfect solution for Lisa’s goal of “doing it for my family, so I’m comfortable that my kids can drive it.” The suggestion of finding a Carrera with an un-modified engine, a plan was put into action. Lisa searched and found a base 2014 Carrera; in two months Zephyr gutted and assembled the personalized daily driver of her choosing. Exteriorwise, not much went untouched, making for an ÜnSTOCK candidate. Huge OEM big brake discs, with red calipers, are the halting visuals behind Apex VS-5RS wheels (20X9 F, 20X11.5 R), mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport S tires (245/35 F, 305/30 R), filling the wheel-wells perfectly via the H&R adjustable ride height springs. The body received a facelift with a Sport Design front bumper, along with a subtle change of the Porsche front emblem. The last impression as she leaves the grocery, mall, or her children’s school or college is the huge TECHART wing she’d dreamed of, done in bold two-tone fashion. Peeking below is a Shark Werks exhaust system, with black gloss powder-coated tips. The license plate pays tribute to the fond memories of the show Lisa used to watch with her children. “Joctopus was the character that was mean on the outside, but gentle on the inside.” The perfect analogy that sums up her streetable interpretation of a GT3 RS. The end result, Lisa claims “I think I have a gem.“ Perhaps it’s no small coincidence that the exterior of her latest Porsche is Sapphire. While a known quote is “diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” it might be fair to classify this blue personalized Porsche as Lisa’s new favorite gemstone.

Porsche 911: One Owner’s Opi

I

’ve owned five Porsches: g

1997 Boxster

g

2003 911. “996” era car - manual transmission

2017 911 base “991.2” model. I wanted an automatic PDK transmission. PDK is awesome in its own right and great for the daily driving styles we have around OC. If you can spend weekends carving the mountains and doing road trips, by all means, go manual. But the PDK can blip, blip, blip the shifts! g

g

1999 911. I bought it from an 83 year old friend for $20,000 and

sold it 6 months later for $23,000. A great manual car. 2017 Panamera. A great car if you can have only one Porsche for the family and all-around usefulness—a hatchback and a sporty highway cruiser or a good around-town luxury car.

g

Shopping for a “newer” 911. I would define “newer” as after 2013. In 2012 / 13 the interiors were updated in the 991 series with a modern-looking center stack and electronics. Base model cars up to 2016 have naturally aspirated engines. Cars after 2016 all have twin turbos, which bring power more immediately and are very smooth. Still, eventually, the “Last of the Naturally Aspirated” cars could prove to hold value because the “first of” and “last of” for Porsche often bring value over time. AI says:

The 2017 base has stronger low-rpm torque from its turbos, so it can feel just as quick—or quicker—in normal street driving. But a similarly equipped 2014 S has more peak power and tends to edge it in an all-out run. The bigger distinction is character. 2014 S = higher-revving NA sound and response; 2017 base = broader torque and easier everyday acceleration. I don’t think you can feel the .1 seconds, and the 2017 has more oomph from the get-go. I chose the 2017 because it had CarPlay and I liked the color. I wasn’t going to spend the money and not have my phone work in the dash. 14 PANDO | November 2026 14 PANDO | November 2026

Shopping - Full Price New or a Good CPO? I was in a parking lot Saturday and parked my 2017 next to another 911. The guy came out of the parking lot. I asked him about his car. He said, “It's a 2023.” I said, “I'm not sure if I have another expensive upgrade in my future.” The guy says, “I had a 2018 and this 2023. Don’t worry about the upgrade. It’s the same stuff!” i.e., you get 99% of the experience from the 2017 as the 2023 for 2 / 3 the money. A new 911 runs $165,000++ A 2016-2020 is in the $95,000-$110,000 range for a low-mile car with a 2-year Porsche dealer warranty. Sales tax and license on a $100,000 car is $10,000. On a $165,000 car, it’s $16,000. Annual registration is 30% lower. Maintenance is the same ($300-$400 oil changes are all you should need for the first 2 years at a local Indy shop, or $500-$600 at a dealer). Tires could run you $2,000 every 15,000 miles — rears last about 13,000 and fronts 20,000. Strategy - Consider a 991.1 or newer car, including a good 992.1. Here are recent listings summarized:

All of these cars have 2-year warranties. They have all been inspected and brought up to snuff at the Porsche dealer. Compared to a private party, you don’t need a pre-purchase inspection (IMHO) because of the CPO warranty, and you can walk into the dealer and buy the cars TODAY without kicking tires with an auction site or private party. People obsess over the hunt but there are 50 cars in your chosen price range at a dealer, not too far away from what other sources expect you to pay. You pay a premium over a private party, but as I said, the car is inspected and could have had some major service done early to CPO the

car at the Porsche dealer. This includes spark plugs ($1000) and air filters. ($1,000). All that said, check Phillips Auto Newport Beach for comparison. They always have a gaggle of 911s. They currently have 9 911s under $175,000. I bought my Panamera there. Good shop. They will want to sell you a third-party warranty to make some profit on their pretty reasonable prices. A 4-year warranty on a 2017 Panamera was $4,000. With shop prices near $300 / hour, the CPO or another warranty is vital. That said, I’ve had good luck with my 911s. The latest 991.2 has been mostly trouble-free except for a water pump covered under an enhanced Porsche warranty / recall (otherwise it would have been $2,000ish). Still, the CPO's ability to go straight to Porsche and get Porsche service repairs under warranty for 2 years is a great comfort for a first-time buyer. Good luck shopping and enjoy the drive!

The Not So A’maze’ing Poker Rally By Glenn Billings, Rallymeister / Photos by Jim Storms, Gary Ambrose, Monica Asbury and Denny Asbury he Rallymeister thought he could fool all those who engaged in a driving maze through Cowan Heights. The narrow, blind, sharp 1st gear corners with street signs that changed names on the twisty turns, then changed back, and then taking alternate routes to come back on the same street name was no problem for these OCR members. They were not fooled! However, what did fool half of the attendees was the gimmick question on Carbon Canyon Road. “Add up the numbers on the “White” speed limit signs on Carbon Canyon.” My mentor, Larry Moore, once said to me, “Sometimes what you think is obvious is not what the crowd thinks.” Approximately 50% of the members correctly added the speed limits, although only three came close to the correct answer of 450. When the five questions on the control sheet (gimmick questions) were being solved, our intrepid competitors also focused on the brief panoramic views of the Chino Hills and Orange County areas. Some found it amazing that they were on roads they’ve never been on and marveled at the multi-milliondollar homes on the 50-mile, 2-hour trip.

Special thanks to our three volunteers who manned the checkpoints along the route, dealing out cards to our 90 contenders, Paul Shaffer, Roger Chung, and Jim Storms, who also performed double-duty as our PANDO photographer. Congratulations to our Poker Rally Winners: ● Mark and Colleen Rabens with 3 Kings ● Gary Ambrose and Karen Lewis with 3 tens (second time in the top 3) ● Bob Kahn and grandson Jack Goedecke with 2 pair ● Mike Talbot 'won' the Sympathy Award since he needed a 7 of Hearts for a straight flush ● Roland and Sheryl Heinzelmann 'won' the Royally Flushed Award (worst hand of the rally) ● Our backseat junior’s Poker Rally Award goes to the Ehart grandchildren, Gavin and Declan ● Our youngest Poker Rally Award was issued to Miss Holly I would like to heap praise on those who helped make this a success, and hopefully, more members will volunteer to assist next time. Special thanks to my high school buddy Carl Kreisant, Larry Moore, and Jim Storms, who all scouted the route with me.

hat do you get when you have blue skies, temperature in the 70’s, with the smell of burning charcoal swirling in the air mixed with the aroma of onions and kraut, and the hum of the Porsche engines rolling in? It’s the New Member Picnic! Grills sizzling, kids laughing, it was time to eat, socialize and enjoy the surroundings. There was plenty of food and beverage for the 170 who RSVP’d to welcome and celebrate our new members. OCR fueled by volunteers, Scott and Brad Fleener, Ken and Jeanne Johnson, Robbie Crawford, Bob Kahn, Mark Rabens and Pam Gray were the heavy lifters with Valerie Vincent and Nicole Boggs providing the entertainment with their outdoor games. A huge thanks to the volunteers and all who joined the 2026 New Member Picnic / BBQ to make it a memorable one!

ith the temperature reaching 100 degrees, which would keep most players home, all the PCAOCR members who signed up, showed up! Our 2026 Golf Series sponsor, James Buck of Cape Auto Repair Shop in Mission Viejo, was the host of the last incursion, which was a delightful time for all players. James treated everyone to dinner and a toast to the season. Just prior to dinner being served, a round of applause was given to the highest round, which was proudly received by John Bonnot. He received a beautiful golf head cover with all the numbers of the Porsche cars embroidered around the cover. Second place found a tie for a round of 35, being awarded to Mark Pero and David Criswell, both receiving one of the beautiful custom-made Porsche / Cape Auto head covers. Finally, with a round of 34, shot by Jonas Cikotas, also a recipient of the cool Porsche/Cape Auto head cover. While the season for 2026 comes to a close, we’re thankful to all the participants who joined us throughout some interesting and challenging weather months. We’re all looking forward to the PCA-OCR 2027 Golf Series sponsored by Cape Auto Repair Shop.

Monterey Car Week, Experienc e are all hearing that Monterey Car Week is getting 1. Too expensive, 2. Too Crowded, 3. Too many activities on the schedule 4. Too difficult to navigate. It’s all up to personal tastes, but there are many events and activities that are free or at a nominal cost. Bring a camera or a fully charged cellphone, as opportunities to see vehicles through a lens or eyes can be endless. Car Week is bookended by the Pre-Reunion and the Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Yes, racing has changed through the years, with less of the Ferrari and Maserati owners participating, but there are still more than 400 vehicles in 11 groups, with the emphasis on innovative, interesting, colorful vehicles. Many are very loud. Enthusiasts on a budget desiring to capture images through a lens have the best opportunities at the less-crowded, easy-to-move-about Pre-Reunion. There are many paved paths to all the quality observation points around

the track, each location easy to share with the few photographers at the fences. Those with deeper pockets and a desire to shop at the vendors can attend the one- to four-day Motorsports Reunion. While it takes a bit of logistical planning to move around (hint: get up and go early), static car show fans are not to be disappointed, can photograph vehicles with less folks around, and can keep their cash. There are so many FREE Marque-specific or general shows and Concours around the Peninsula: Monday (British), two on Tuesday (electric/lowrider or Concours), two on Wednesday (Astons or Little Cars), three on Thursday (Autobahn Legends, Tour d’Elegance, Prancing

Ponies) two on Friday (Concours Auto Rally, Werks), many on Saturday (Concours d’LeMons, Seaside Cars and Coffee) to keep anyone busy. With an early-bird plan of attack, I was able to photograph three morning events before arriving at the Reunion by 10 AM on Saturday. Let’s not forget that the entire week is a car-spotters paradise, as the roads and parking lots are full of interesting vehicles on the move or at rest. And there are many more events to attend with an entry fee. Buying or biding time? Throughout the week there are four unique auctions, offering examples of racing, rarity, radical, regal, some recognized, some discovered. My lens captured so many images each day. The few examples here should pique the interest of our Porsche-centric readers. Enjoy!

RICE’S

Ramblings Story by Lee Rice

1968 911

1968 911 lowered to R.o.W. ride height, on used 6x15 Fuchs, now at 98,520 miles.

D riving a 1968 911 as a daily driver meant everything.

Errands, dates with my wife, kids to school, all four of us on vacation to Monterey and points north, and then track time. It all worked out to be a safe and reliable car. It hauled heavy loads home from the hardware store too, and just ran and ran with very few problems. I put a white stripe on the car and then laid the black PORSCHE lettering over it, which shows well. European Headers by George built my twin pipe exhaust. Oil and filter changes came every 4,000 to 5,000 miles, with valve adjustments every other one. Plugs and points were changed on condition, which with the non-CDI ignition, I readjusted them often. In 1973, I installed a Speedatron High Energy Ignition System and a blue Bosch Sport coil, and the difference was amazing. Front vented brake discs came next. 24 PANDO | November 2026

The twin pipes and the stripe, as the car looked then.

Ignition upgrades

Then

I went through three capacitive discharge ignition units and every one died. The last quit at night on the lower level of the 405 by Long Beach Airport. I carried an old coil and points and wired them up in the dark by flashlight with traffic zipping past.

September 1975 around 11:30 p.m., I was driving home from work at LAX, taking it easy to let the two-liter warm up. I had finished two days at Riverside that week, and the engine was purring. Literally purring.

Truth be told, the poorest thing about an early 911 was constant plug fouling. Running the engine flat out to clean the plugs was not an excuse to have fun. It was what you did to keep them clean enough to drive at all. Around then, Road & Track ran an investigation into transistorized ignition units. Only one lasted the length of their tests, and then they dropped the results. I called and asked the writers why they would not report what they found. Long silence. I did learn the lone winner was a unit called PermaTune, so I called the company in Anaheim and talked to the inventor, Lonnie Lenarduzzi. He invited me to his shop and I bought one of his early test units. It ran better than anything I had used, and I was still on the original points. Eventually, I gave those up for a Pertronix Ignitor, a magnetic disc under the rotor. Better starting, better running, no more setting dwell, and no more fouled plugs.

I stopped at a light and waited for green. Then headlights in the mirror, coming up fast. I pushed my head and shoulders back into the seat and tried to relax. Lights out. I suddenly heard a horrible noise. Everything was white. My 911 was rolling, and I was looking at the headliner with my seat broken behind me. I crawled up to the side window and found the car rolling into the intersection. It crossed two sets of railroad tracks that I never felt. I pulled the hand brake, got out, and stood in the road with no lights and a good deal of pain. Somebody called 911. One crazy factory idea was holding the battery down with a rubber strap. The impact sent mine flying into the trunk, through the wiring, and against the back of the instruments. Of course, there were no lights. At home, I built a steel hold down before I drove the car again.

All that fixing taught me one thing. A problem left alone, or patched instead of properly repaired, only gets worse. That is how I became an avid “Up Fixen der Porsche guy.”

Bashed up on the way home.

November 2026 | PANDO 25

A few weeks later, healing a twisted leg and a sore neck,

the insurance man wanted me to sign off. Nothing doing. An investigator had clued me in, and his advice was simple. Do not jump at anything.

Then a body shop that did a lot of 911s called. The rear was pushed forward four or five inches, all of it repairable to factory specification. The muffler took the brunt of the hit, and that probably saved the car.

The car came home with new valves, fresh seats, rings, rocker arms, two chains and new ramps. The first 200 miles were low power at varying revs to bed the rings, and even then, the torque was obvious. The car weighs about 2,182 pounds, so 180 DIN horsepower makes itself known quickly.

Then came the question that changes everything. “We have this much money, so what would you like to do with it?” I said, “how about making it as close as possible into a 2.7 RS?” They could do that. They happened to have a 934-style deck wing sitting there, busted up. Perfect! Another deal made.

Riverside, where the real test happens, was a success. Soon after, I had my chance to go wide open and feel the cam arrive. By 4,500 the power starts pushing you back. At 5,000 it forces you hard into the seat. From there the revs climb past 7,200 and it is pure acceleration and joy. The engine sang like a 917. I have sat trackside at Laguna Seca listening to Jo Siffert run his day glow red STP 917/10, and the sound is very close.

The 934 copy deck wing, being rebuilt from its own smash up.

That upgrade made plain what the chassis now needed. Bigger brakes. Stiffer torsion bars, stronger front struts and rear dampers. Everything else required to have real confidence behind a 2.2 S at full power. I did all of it, and it foretold the three major rounds of work I have done since buying the car in 1971. Along the way I learned not only how Porsche KG made their changes, but why. I did the same, without the constraints of a production line. I made my 911 my own way, and I have written about it in PANDO since 1992. Not the end. The beginning.

The Westport 2.2 liter 911S engine going into my 1968 911. No longer a plain Jane. The engine went to Westport, where Michael knew I wanted something bigger. He offered to trade my two liter for a used 1970 2.2 liter 911S, 180 horsepower, already a mid-rebuild. Deal on the spot, and I got to help. He took exacting care, timing the cams and the injection pump, and on an MFI 911S every degree counts.
