President’s Corner Michael Grant - President Happy New Year! As we ring in 2014, I hope you are planning to head up to Daytona for the Porsche Corral at the 24 Hours at Daytona and the Keys drive and dine with an overnight in Key West. As we discussed last month 2014 is starting out with a bang like the fireworks New Years Eve. The Key Largo Drive and Dine, with a continuing side trip to Key West, including special rates and special Porsche parking in Key West. It is the perfect time of year to be headed down to the keys with the top down or the sun roof open. Heck it is the perfect to head down to Key West in anything especially in a Porsche. The Corral at Daytona is just around the corner too. Gold Coast region helps put this event on each year and we need volunteers to help for a few hours to man the hospitality table. It is a great place to meet and greet Porsche enthusiast from all over Florida, the southeastern US and even some snowbirds escaping winter. Silly people winter is beautiful right? At least we think so in Gold Coast Region. The race is an extreme test of endurance, where Porsche has a great history of success. The corral is track side with a great view of the cars passing right in front of our parking area and our own grandstands. The racing goes on for 24 hours, but there is plenty to do besides watching the cars speed by. There is socializing at the corral and special presentations to our group. There are many other activities at the track from a chilli cook off, to numerous vender displays and amusement rides. Daytona is an awe inspiring facility and worth the trip to see it decked out for one of America’s best known endurance races. We also, talked last month about our club race 48 Hours at Sebring. This last weekend of January /first weekend of February is a great time to be at Sebring. The fun usually starts Wednesday evening as Porsches, drivers, transporters, and RVs arrive to stake their claim in the paddock and garages. This is an incredible weekend, all Porsches, usually 300 or more, racing or having fun on the track in advanced solo DE sessions. There is an autocross during the weekend, lots of Porsches, fun, food and beautiful weather. It takes several hundred volunteers to run the event starting Wednesday evening and running through to Sunday evening. Come up for a half a day or for the weekend. You won’t be disappointed. This weekend is one of the largest gatherings of Porsche race cars in the world. Each year we have an extraordinary number of Porsche GT3 Cup race cars competing wheel to wheel on the famous Sebring international Raceway. These amateur drivers are enjoying the same track that nearly every great racing hero from history has driven and competed on. There is a test day on Thursday for racers, many of whom will be running their cars for the first time in 2014 season at this test day. There are advanced solo Driver’s Ed sessions Thursday evening that run into the night. Sebring at night is a special experience that any driver will enjoy. There is racing practice and qualifying beginning Thursday evening and Friday morning. The racing and advanced solo Driver’s Ed continues through Sunday evening. The entire event is put together by a group of dedicated volunteers. Several hundred volunteers are put to work during the weekend. These volunteers man the registration area, the grid, timing and scoring, help with race control and assist the professional corner workers. It is a great opportunity to get involved and be close to the action. My first year as a volunteer was about 10 years ago. I thought it would be fun to volunteer to help the corner workers. I was assigned turn “7” the “Hair Pin”. I was supposed to help for ½ a day and then I would be free to go. Well, during that morning I was assigned to hold the yellow flag at

my side and out of sight of the drivers on track. I was instructed to stand in a specific place with my eyes facing the apex of turn “7”. I was told to watch for cars spinning or misbehaving in some way. If I saw this and the professional corner worker advised me to do so, I should wave the yellow flag vigorously. The corner workers began to point out the driver’s who appeared to be driving smoothly and quickly and those who looked like they were trouble. They showed me the things to look out for like fluids leaking from passing cars or smoke coming from a car. Based on where the smoke was coming out of the car they could make assessment of the need for concern with regard to the smoke. The Driver’s Ed group was well behaved, and there was no excitement to speak of from that group. Then the race group came out to qualify. They were all spread out with space between them and appeared to initially be staying under control. Then all of the sudden about 5 minutes into the session speeds picked up and the corner got the best of several drivers. As the tires screamed and smoke poured from the fenders several drivers exceeded the limit of adhesion (in other words they spun). I was wildly waving the yellow flag to inform the approaching drivers to the mishap and blocked course that awaited them just around the bend. Wow, it was exciting! I was involved, close to the action, and having fun. I decided that I would gladly stay beyond our half a day. Later that day a red 944 Turbo was racing for the corner and trying to outbrake the 911 on the outside line. He missed a shift and went from 5th to 2nd. This was apparently not an acceptable move from the transmission and engine’s perspective. The transmission and/or engine case broke when internal parts decided to let go and the oil dumped on to the hot exhaust components before dropping on the ground. Interestingly enough the oil managed to drop on the ground in front of rear wheels making grip disappear. The 944 burst in into flames and then immediately began to spin on the oil it was depositing for itself. Again I am working. The yellow flag wildly waving as the corner worker handed me a red flag and told me to stand by with it. He was talking on the radio as the second corner worker rushed to the 944 with the fire extinguisher. The 944 had spun off the track now and come to a stop. By the time that the corner worker was arriving at the car the fire seamed to self extinguish and was now just smoking. The driver had exited the car and leaped over the wall. There was a trail of burning oil on the ground behind the car that was flickering out, but the extinguisher put a punctuation mark on those flames. Upon inspection the car was no longer flaming, but oil was still draining onto the ground. I was instructed grab the black flag now and hold it steady in view of the passing cars and continue to wave the yellow flag. An ambulance and rescue truck arrived at the smoking 944 examined the driver while taking care of the car and cleaning up the oil. The driver was fine, and aside from some damage to the engine and / or transmission the car was ok too. The car was towed behind the wall, as the next group of racers took to the track. I had so much fun I volunteered to return on Sunday and set out to find a hotel room for the night. The only room available was the “Honeymoon Suit” at the Budget Inn (mirrored ceiling, red velvet walls and a hot tub). That’s another story for another day, but that weekend, I realized that this was a fun event no matter what role I played. A few years later I volunteered to take on a committee chair position in charge of timing and scoring. I have always enjoyed the weekend, meeting people from all over the US, South America and Europe. You really should give it a try (volunteering for the weekend, not necessarily the Honeymoon suite). It is a great opportunity to get involved and have fun. Hope to see you there.

Porsches by the Bay Concours

by Fred Kohly, Concours Chair

It’s becoming a Gold Coast PCA tradition, and it’s always billed, because it is “the largest gathering of Porsches in south Florida.” It takes place every November on the picturesque lawn of Biscayne Bay at the beautiful Mandarin Hotel on Brickell Key. Between 150-200 Porsche owners, and their cars of course, show up for a day of fun, food, gathering, and some friendly competition in the Peoples Choice and Concours d’Elegance events. The Peoples Choice is a vote by the attendees for their favorite car of the day. Sometimes there are several favorites, as the cars are divided up into different classes so the newer cars don’t compete with older cars, and so forth. Ribbons are awarded and everyone has fun. The Concours d’Elegance event is a Judged competition where experts examine the cars on various criteria and determine who has the winning car by awarding points. As in Peoples Choice, the cars are divided into classes, or generations, to make the event fair. This year, the Concours event had two categories. The first was the Wash & Shine, where the Judges examined only the exterior and interior of the cars. The second category was what we call Preparation Touring after PCA rules. Here the judges carefully examined the exterior, interior, storage, and engine. The underside was not considered. The car with the most points awarded, in other words, less deductions, in their respective class wins their group. The Judges, then select one car out of the entire group, which they feel, was a stand out in every regard. We call this the “Best of Choice” or “Judges Choice”. Trophies were awarded up to 3rd place in some classes and a single “Best of Show” trophy. This year’s highlights and competition featured many extraordinary cars. Some of the ones that stood out was Dan Simonson’s 1988 Club Sport. While it may look like a regular 1988 Carrera to some, it’s not. The Club Sport is extremely rare and it’s almost impossible to find one for sale. The Club Sport was a special lightweight version of a sport equipped coupe and designed to offer occasional Club Racing. Only 21 of these cars were built for the USA in 1988, and 7 in 1989. Dan bought the car from our own long time club member and expert racer Lynk Eveleth. Dan restored the car to its originality. Phil Bagley and Juan Hinestrosa killed it with their outstanding collection of cars and took home a lot of hardware to prove it. Man, you guys have nice cars! Juan, if you are reading this, you need to get more involved with the Club! You are a serious collector. Phil, we already know you are. Phil brought a stunning 1959 356 Convertible, which won his Class and Best of Show. In addition the 1967S and 1967 racers where to die for and took home hardware. Juan, the 1974 Carrera was out of sight, and the 2013 4.0 RS, are you kidding? Not many of those. The other cars were spectacular as well and it was reflected in the winning results. A big “hats off ‘to Dale Brundage and Kevin Brooks, Dale’s 1996 white 993 was outstanding, and this car can compete Nationally with just a little more effort. Dale you have the talent and the car 8

Die Porsche Kassette | January 2014

to really do things. Kevin Brooks, with his outstanding 1969 912 keeps improving every year, and taking home more and more hardware for his work of love on his car. Kevin nice job, the car is beautiful! So many others we could mention, including Andres Martinez’s 356 Outlaw with a turbo engine (how he fit that in there I’ll never know), but running out of space. Everyone did a great job and all the cars were excellent. A big thanks for all the volunteers and specially the scorekeepers who gave up so much of their time to make sure everything was perfect. Thank you.

Editor’s Notes Roger Fabel - Editor

Happy New Year !! member to provide them with more information about the different Last year was a historic year for programs. There is no special hand shake. Attend the programs

Gold Coast as you can see from our grand celebration at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel with over 150 members and a record of twenty of our past presidents in attendance. The club truly lives up to its name when you look at the rich history of our region and the quality of our programs with many setting the standard for PCA. This was all done by members who had a passion for the car but more of a passion to share with other members so that they could learn and have the same experience on the track or just enjoying a drive thru the country. It is always said the club is not about the car but about the people. We have the best car in the world and also the best people in the world. This year we worked hard on providing fun social events along with our great track events. We will continue that process with another fun filled year of events. Check out our 2014 calendar to help you plan the entire year so you don’t miss any of the events. We have many new members who attend an event for the first time and want to know how to get involved; they have completed the first step which is attending events. The next step is to talk with a

you like and you will see how you can volunteer to help, we are all volunteers who started the same way. Speaking of volunteers, if you like race cars and and being part of the race, the 48 Hours of Sebring is coming up soon and we are looking for volunteers to help run the largest club race in the world at Sebring the first weekend of February. Check page 22 for more details and contact Jerry Daily to volunteer. This is one of our most popular events. If you are new to the club and want to learn more about the control of your car I highly recommend our autocross program. An overview of the program can be found on page 20. The first event of the year is January 5. Learn how to safely control and enjoy your car. Another start to the PCA year is a drive to the Keys for a fantastic brunch at the Big Chill in Key Largo on January 18. Like all of our event please register early on clubregistration.net because many events are limited in attendance. I hope you all have a great year and attend many of the events we have planned for you. Roger

Condensed History of the Gold Coast Region by Mike Joffee, Club Historian

In October of 1963, about 40 people met at the Space Satellite Hotel in Pompano Beach to discuss forming what is now called the Gold Coast Region and joining PCA. That was accomplished and for 1964 elected Jim Pete as our first president. We have come a long way since then. The newsletter, “Die Porsche Kasette” was formed shortly thereafter. It started out as two pages and was hand typed & mimeographed. (Anybody remember mimeographs?) It obviously improved little by little over the years to the beautiful and very professional product we have today thanks to our current editor, Roger Fabel, and of course, his many predecessors. In the early days our only function was monthly socials held at various restaurants in Dade and Broward counties. There were very few Palm Beach members at that time. Eventually the Palm Beach area grew and we would have at least (2) socials a year in that area. Autocrosses started to become very popular and in the mid 60’s we joined the South Florida council of Sports Car Clubs and began entering in and putting on a lot of autocrosses. Once in a great while we had a rally but attendance was poor so it was shelved. In 1968, Gold Coast got the bid to put on the National Porsche Parade. It was held at the Colonades hotel in Palm Beach. The National Porsche Parade is a gala affair consisting of about 400 cars (400 back them, over 750 today) from all over the country competing in the autocross, rally, concours, tech quiz, classroom tech sessions, door prizes, trophies and dinners. Back then the parades had names, ours was called “Sonnenfest” which means festival in the sun. Unfortunately it rained so much that week, it became known as “Soggyfest” .Gold Coast only had about 100 members at that time so putting on something of this magnitude was quite a feat. In 1972, our board of directors decided to put on what is called a “multi-region” event. This event is like a mini national parade scaled down to a weekend affair with a concours on Saturday morning, a rally Saturday afternoon, an autocross on Sunday and banquets on Saturday and Sunday nights along with many door prizes and trophies. This event was originally called the “Florida Parade” for the first two years and was changed to “Sonnenfest” in 1974 and is still being put on not just by Gold Coast but with three other regions. In 2014 it is being hosted by the Citrus Region and will be held in Mt. Dora at the historical Lakeside Inn. In 1984, thanks mainly to Ken Fengler, we had our first driver’s education (DE) event held at PBIR. It was and still is a huge success and we currently hold 5 or 6 a year. This event is not actually a race although I’m not sure all the drivers know that, but rather a means to learn how to drive and handle your car at fairly high speeds. In 1994, thanks mainly to Bob Varela, we had our first club race. The club race program run under the auspices of PCA National unlike the DE’s is an actual wheel to wheel race. This is a huge four day event held on the 2nd weekend of February at the Sebring track. Club races are put on all over the country by various regions. Our club race right from the first one in 1994 has had more drivers every year (over 300) than any other club races held 16

Die Porsche Kassette | January 2014

throughout the country. Not only is ours the biggest, but is also considered one of, if not the best club race each year. From approximately 2001 through 2011, we had an excellent autocross series chaired all 10 years by Steve & Dottie Kidd. In 2012 it was chaired by Alex Ortega Jr. ( along with many family members). Starting in January 2014, Steve and Dottie Kidd are temporarily taking it over again but I’m told its just for the short term. For the past few years we have had, and still have, a wonderful website done by Laz Ortega. Everything you need to know about Gold Coast is there for you to see and is always kept current. Over the years, Gold Coast has been very well represented at the National Porsche Parades. We have won dozens of first place trophies in the concours and autocrosses including some top times by both men and women at the autocrosses. Trophies for those two events are not all we’ve accomplished, there is an award presented each year for the “Family of the Year” which we have one three times, more than any other region. We also had a member win the “Enthusiast of the Year” in 1999 and as a region, we won the “President’s Trophy” 3 times which is an award given each year to a region based on number of entrants and distance traveled. Only the Alaska region has won it more times. The most prestigious award we have won however was the “Region of the year” for 1986. Ken Fengler headed the crew who put together the award winning book. Ken Fengler has brought this book to this 50th anniversary party for anyone who would like to see what it took to win this award. (Without the help of computers) For the past few years our executive board and specifically our social chairpersons have done an outstanding job of diversifying our many social events including many “drive & dines”, picnics, “Pot Luck” dinners and just a couple of months ago actually rented an entire movie theatre & showed the Steve McQueen movie “Le Mans” while the attendees were served lunch. There are a host of new events being put together right now for 2014. Keep reading the Kasette and checking the website. The social committee is working very hard to make sure that there will be something for everyone’s liking. In closing, those of us who have been around since the early days can hardly believe what has happened to this little region of less than 50 members to what is now over 1200 strong and puts us as the 19th largest region out of 149 and still growing. Even with all the changes that have taken place within our region and PCA in general. There has been a saying within PCA right from the beginning which I personally have always believed in and if you stick around long enough, you will too. The saying goes: “Porsche, it’s not the cars, it’s the people”.

Thank you for coming. Mike Joffee Club Historian

GCR Gimmick Rally

Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world! How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 20th anniversary event was a show stopper: we had over 450 participating Porsches. Now, as we are starting on our 3rd decade of hosting 48 Hours at Sebring, along with our friends in the Gold Coast Region, the 21st edition will be even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 350 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night beer and wine party. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race, or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. What can you do to help? At Track Registration We need 4 or 5 people to assist with getting the driver’s checked in, this is an indoor siting job that begins at 7:00 AM Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first couple of hours are the busiest so you need to be a morning person. The Grid, we have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are. 1. Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring. 2. Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured, etc. 3.Checking the driver to ensure that he or she is buckled in, with helmet on and secured. Timing and Scoring, we need about 5 volunteers each day. You will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start/finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but it is the heart beat of the race. Tech and Scales, we need a volunteers each day to help check the

22

Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales. The Corners, we need volunteers to assist the SCCA corner-workers at each corner. This is truly where the action is! Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 professional SCCA corner workers. For each corner, we assign a maximum of 2 volunteers to assist the SCCA corner workers. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. It’s amazing how much you can learn while watching skilled drivers go through a corner lap after lap. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!! The responsibilities for the corner are: 1.You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track; 2.In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag. 3. You may be asked to assist with any reporting of an on track incident. Notes. At no time would you go over the wall! Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour t-shirt are perfect. Pit Marshalls, This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the race steward. This position is needed during the Enduro. Each driver is required to make a 5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro. We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are, 1.Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc. 2.Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment 3.Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded. 4.Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Training will be provided by PCA officials. Miscellaneous Positions. We need other volunteers to help with the Saturday night auction This is where we raise the most money for the charities. We need a few other volunteers to take on whatever task that may come up. To Volunteer go to http://www.48hoursatsebring.com/Volunteers/VolunteerSignUp2014.aspx. For more information please contact Jerry Daily Poorish993@gmail.com or Mike Mackenzie gmike997@gmail.com

Tech Corner : Heading Out! Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

The ONLY way you can make more power in an internal combustion engine is to push more air through it, period. You can do this by increasing the displacement (boring out the cylinders), by adding forced-air induction, such as with a Turbo or a Supercharger Kit, or by making your engine’s airflow more efficient. But you can cheat and use a loophole whereby you can reduce wasted energy (make more power) by improving the exhaust side of things by adding headers.

converter(s), through the muffler and its baffles, and finally out to the atmosphere. At the exhaust manifold, one cylinder’s exhaust creates back pressure for the other two cylinders. What makes the headers work is that they help to eliminate back pressure. Instead of having all three cylinders on one side of the engine share one common exhaust manifold, with headers, each cylinder gets it’s own exhaust pipe. All three pipes come together into a larger pipe called the collector. Each one of the three pipes is cut and bent so that they all have the same length as the other two.

Looking at the four stroke diagram you can see that the engine produces all its power during the power stroke. The Intake, Compression and Exhaust strokes are required to make the power stroke possible but they drain power from the Power stroke. In the Power stroke the gasoline and air mixture is ignited by the spark. It explodes and as the gasses expand, they push the piston back, thus generating power. At the Exhaust stroke, back pressure is a certain way to lose power. When the exhaust valves open at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, the piston pushes the gasses out of the cylinder and if there’s any resistance that these gasses have to overcome, such as back pressure, then power is wasted. In a flat-6 Porsche engine, whether air or water cooled, the exhaust gases end up in the exhaust manifold. From the manifold, the gases flow into one pipe, through the catalytic 26

By making them the same length, it guarantees that each cylinder’s exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector. This reduces wasted energy. But remember that if you want to make more power you’ll have to increase the air flow from the air filter all the way to the exhaust tips, and many times it requires replacing and/or improving the: air filter, intake tube, throttle body, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, catalytic converter(s) and muffler. Finally, after you do all this you’ll need to remap the car’s computer so that it can all come together efficiently.
