Hello, everyone! Wow, it’s December! Where did the time go??? The first year of my presidency went by too quickly. As a whole, I’d say it’s been a fantastic year for Gold Coast Region. We’ve had a lot of funfilled events and I hope that you all have enjoyed them as much as I have. I’m lucky to be at the head of this awesome club and I sincerely appreciate everyone who puts so much time and effort into GCR. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! As the GCR calendar and year come to a close, I hope you and your families have a wonderful holiday season and a restful end of the year. Please take the time to think about all of the good things that have happened to you over the course of the year and prepare for more good things to
happen next year! As well, spend some time driving your favorite Porsche!!!! In November, the GCR elections came to a close on the 14th. In this edition of the Kassette or in the next, we will reveal the new board members elected by you, the members of GCR. Looking at the candidates as a whole, I don’t think there was a wrong way to vote. All of the candidates were good choices! I hope you all had the opportunity to attend Porsches By The Bay on November 19. The weather could not have been better and the cars were amazing. I’m looking forward to it again next year. This month we will be attending the Festival Flea Market Car Show on December 9th. Lots of cars and lots of fun! We are
then taking the rest of the year off to get ready for next year. As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your e-mails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members to the club and make them feel welcome! Drive alert and safe!

How can we already be in the last month of 2017? As the saying goes, “Time flies when you are having fun”. I hope you have enjoyed this year and all of the different PCA events provided by the national staff and the GCR local board. Always remember that the club is run by volunteers, so we are always looking for

new members to get involved. By providing your time and talent you will increase your enjoyment of being a PCA member. You may be new to the club and ask how you can get involved. The best way is to start attending events and ask questions. All the members are very helpful. I remember my first experience after purchasing my first Porsche in 2001, a guards red Boxster S, was to go observe an autocross event. I met Diana and Mike Hansen who also had the same model Porsche. They were very helpful and we attended our first Zonefest two weeks later where I learned a lot more about this fantastic club. My wife and I attended most of the events and volunteered to help in several areas. It
turned out that Diana was one of the social chairs and she did an excellent job of helping us to get involved. Mike was also helpful because he encouraged me to run for a board position and it was not long before I became Mike’s vice president. After serving on the board and being vice president I became President of GCR and served with some great PCA members. Our zone rep Ruben Ledesma and the nation PCA staff were all very supportive in the growth of our region. Don’t sit back, get involved and help continue the growth of our region. Autocross Update Another AutoX season is in the record books...7 events, 3 venues and lots fun and smiles. .2017 had its complications with rain, hurricanes and other problems, however by the time you read this, our final event will be finished and you can go to our website to see results as well as the class winners for 2017. Event # 5 at BB&T center was another well attended event and was one of the most challenging courses to date....lots of got ya’s and those with patience were rewarded with good times. Event #6 was our 2nd zone challenge event and held at Daytona in conjunction with the Oktoberfast Club Race. Those that registered on time got
and I handle a lot of the before event tasks (keeping track of registrations and payments, picking up and transporting the AutoX trailer, storing and maintaining all the equipment and having all run groups, car classes, and work groups organized, securing event insurance, contracting with site for usage, seeing that bills get paid.... to name a few) and after event tasks (everything we did before in reverse). At the event we have some regular and occasional members that make our AutoX program possible: these include but are not limited to Jake (morning setup and fix it guy), Juan Carlos (Timing) Ty, (instructing and post event social.)

an event t-Shirt and class winners got a special trophy. Make no doubt about it....competition was fierce with 7 of the 10 PCA regions in zone 12 having competitors run for bragging rights. When all the dust settled, Rad Delgado of GOLD COAST region grabbed top time of the day in his 991GT3RS, Ladies top time went to Heather Hamill of FL. THOROUGHBRED region, driving a Boxster S. For those that have never made the trip up to Daytona, it needs to be on your bucket list. The Oktoberfast AutoX is run on a world class kart track inside the compound and most times are around 1 minute. As the 2017 season concludes, I would be remiss if I did not mention that PCA is “fueled by volunteers”, and that is especially true in AutoX. Dottie

Moving forward, our 1st event of 2018 will be at Sebring in conjunction with the 48 hours of Sebring Club Race on February 3rd . Registration will be open by the time you get this notice on club registration. This will be another Zone Challenge Event. Complete w/event shirts and trophies. News, reminders and 2017 updates: Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration. net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2017 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. Unfortunately, we had to make some last minute changes to the series and dates due to weather for the 2nd half of the year. Event 5, originally scheduled for Sept 16 at Sebring was moved and rescheduled for October 21 at BBT. Event #6, originally scheduled for October 14, was moved to October 28 at Daytona ,(hopefully this encouraged more folks to try an AutoX on a really good go-cart track, as well as participate in a Zone challenge event), Unless something catastrophic happens event ,#7 remains unchanged.....Still on November 12th at BBT center Cheers! Tech Corner : The Man of Le Mans Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
The Porsche Community lost one of it’s own very recently. If you are reading this article, he touched your life one way or another. I’m referring to Peter W. Schutz, former CEO of Porsche. Through the years and because of his accomplishments Mr. Schutz has been called: “The Man who saved the Porsche 911”, and I also call him “The Man of Le Mans”. Peter W. Schutz was born in Berlin, Germany in 1930 of Jewish parents. In 1937, because of the rise of the Nazi Party the family emigrated to Havana, Cuba. Two years later they relocated and settled in Chicago, Illinois where he eventually went to college (Illinois Institute of Technology) and obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering. Right out of college Mr. Schutz was employed at Caterpillar Tractor where he worked his way up the corporate ladder for 15 years. He then spent another 11 years working at Cummins Engine where he was involved in corporate strategic planning for the first 3 years and then 8 years as VP Sales. In 1976 he was invited to speak at the Teamsters Convention. When Cummins management questioned his decision to accept the appearance he left the company. Two years later, in 1978, he moved to Cologne, Germany and took over the Deutz Engine Division of Klöckner-HumboldtDeutz. While there he was approached by Ferry Porsche who personally invited him to apply to the position of CEO at Porsche. Porsche told Schutz that the company was not working as a cohesive unit, and they needed someone to make it all come together. Although neither Porsche nor Schutz ever specifically stated it, it was believed that Mr. Schutz was selected out of the 12 candidates who applied in order to have an American running the company to reignite sales in the US

which represented 60% od Porsche’s production and sales. In 1980 Porsche suffered its first money-loosing year since its creation in 1948. Much of the problem was due to declining sales in the US in part due to monetary exchange rates which drastically increased the prices of German products, constant quality control problems, and a less than enthusiastic embrace of the new designs of the 924 and 928 Porsche models. Mr. Schutz investigated the root of the quality control issue, and found out that it was mainly a simple problem with the drive for the camshaft. When he then asked why the problem had not been fixed he was told that it didn’t make sense, since the 911 was ending production that year in favor of the 924 and the 928. The 911 had been the flagship of Porsche since 1963 and the announcement of its cancellation was causing low morale in the engineering department among others in the company. While in the office of Helmuth Bott, chief of engineering, Mr. Schutz saw a chart that graphed the evolution of the 924, the 928 and the 911. It showed projected production and sales numbers of the 924 and 928 for up to 20 years ahead but the line for the 911 ended that same year (1981). Mr. Schutz got up from his chair, picked up a large black marker from Mr. Bott’s desk and extended the 911’s line to the end of the chart, then onto the wall and around to the hallway and told Mr. Bott to “make it happen”. The problem with the camshaft was quickly fixed which ended the quality control issue. With Bott’s and his team’s enthusiasm because of the revival of the 911 and with Mr. Schutz blessing, Porsche went on to develop and introduce what many consider the ultimate 911, the 959 (in 1986). (The Man that saved the 911). But back to 1981. At the same time, the Porsche Racing Team was in the process of entering three modified 924s to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Mr. Schutz quickly found out that there was no hope of winning with those entries and told his team that “they were going to race with the intention of winning, or not going at all”. His engineers then decided to pull a 936 from the museum display and install in it an experimental engine that Porsche had developed for Indy Car Racing. Peter Schutz’ priority immediately became making sure that he had a proud team, eager to work and win, but they only had 61 days to make it happen. As he told the story: “In 61 days we couldn’t hire and train a bunch of new people, we couldn’t buy new tooling and machinery. No. In 61 days we couldn’t do anything but use what we had! The racecar was being built out at Weissach, 4 or 5 kilometers
away from the main plant. I would go out there after I finished my chores, maybe at six o’clock or so and people from the plant, from engineers to the financial department, they would jump in their cars and would drive to Weissach. They wanted to help. They were cleaning parts, sweeping the floor, running errands, making coffee, and at 11:00 o’clock at night I would have to say: ‘all right folks, tomorrow is another day!’ And they didn’t want to leave. They were all busy building this car.” He goes on with his recount: “A few days after I made the decision to go racing, the phone rang in my office, I picked up the receiver and a man’s voice said: ‘Mr. Schutz, my name is Jacky Ickx, I am a retired race car driver, (yea, right – he thought to himself - this guy is the leading longdistance sports car driver in the entire world) if the rumors I am hearing are true, I would like to once again drive a Porsche at Le Mans’. I told him, bring it on. Shortly thereafter Derek Bell, Jochen Mass, Al Holbert, Hurley Haywood, Vern Schuppan, Hans Stuck, all the best drivers were calling me asking if they could come and drive those cars. If I had called any of these drivers and asked them to drive for Porsche the first thing they would have asked me is how much will you pay? But Porsche didn’t have any money, and they knew it. Who the heck called these drivers and told them what was going on? Well, it was quite a bit of work for me to find out who called all these people. It was Heinz Metzger, one of my engine designers, who in another day, when he was young and beautiful, was in Jacky Ickx’ pit crew, when Jacky was a star in rising in Formula 1. The other mechanics, all these ordinary people, got a hold of Heinz and told him: ‘Heinz you know this guy, why don’t you give him a call, tell him what we’re doing, if he comes and drives this car we can really win this thing’. That’s who called the super stars. We went to that race in June of 1981, and of course, we won.
But not only did we just win the race. We set the standard for 24 hour racing. For the first time in the history of Le Mans, the winning car ran the whole 24 hours and nobody ever laid a wrench on it. All we did was add oil and fuel, change the brake linings and the tires. It was a whole new standard. For the first time in over 20 years Professor Porsche came to the race. I made sure of that. We won that race, and we never again lost while I was there. I left Porsche in ’87 and that was the last year we won (until 1996). After the ’81 race, disaster struck. Disaster struck in the form of change. All the rules changed. The Porsche 936 was never allowed to race again. No more welded steel tube frame with a cosmetic fiberglass body. For the first time we had to build what is now called a tub. We had to build it out of aluminum, which is what we had back then. There was no Kevlar or carbon fiber in those days. In four months, during the winter of ‘81/’82, that bunch designed a brand new racecar, and in 1982 we went back to the 24 Hours of Le Mans with three brand new cars called
Porsche 956s that had never raced before. They were numbers 1, 2, 3 … and that’s how they finished! (The Man of Le Mans).
After his tenure at Porsche, Mr. Shutz and his wife Sheila Harris formed Harris & Schutz, Inc. in 1991 to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between Peter and business people all over the world. Peter’s background in engineering – coupled with his experience in marketing and management – gave him a unique perspective on modern business. After he “retired”, he became a world-
class speaker and presenter. His appearances included association conventions, and conferences as well as in-company consulting and seminars. The Executive Committee (TEC – now known as Vistage) an organization of CEOs named Peter “Resource of the Year” in 1985. Peter spoke to more than 400 TEC meetings world-wide, and that’s how I met him for the first time. I was a member of a TEC Group in St. Louis and when it was my turn to host the meeting and invite a guest speaker I jumped at the opportunity to bring in the legendary Peter W. Schutz. I had just placed the order for my Boxster one week before. He was very excited to hear that and after a great meeting where he told us many Porsche stories and lessons learned, we had dinner together and he gave me a bunch of tips on which options to get and which to pass on. We kept in touch and even coincided in a couple of other gatherings, including some PCA Board Member meetings in Naples where he resided until his passing. At one of those meetings we presented him with a PedrosBoard hat which he gracefully modeled for the camera. Rest in Peace, Peter Schutz. You will be missed.

48 HOURS AT Celebrating 25th Anniversary
Calling All PCA Volunteers Jerry Daily, Volunteer Co-chair The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2018 race to be held February 1 thru 4 2018. We have several new members on the 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee but most important for us in that Paul Raben has agreed to take over for Jerry Daily as Gold Coast Volunteer Co-Chairman. Jerry will be with Paul every step of this 25th anniversary event, so please give Paul the help and support that you have given Jerry for over 20 years. It is time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world!

How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 24th annual event was a great success: we had over 450 participating Porsches. Now, its the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event. Make hotel reservations for the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 25th edition will be even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 350 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night vendor showcase party. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race,

or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. What can you do to help? At Track Registration We need 4 or 5 people to assist with getting the driver’s checked in, this is an indoor siting job that begins at 7:00 AM Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first couple of hours are the busiest so you need to be a morning person. The Grid, we have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are. 1. Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring. 2. Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured.
3. Checking the driver to ensure that he or she is buckled in, with helmet on and secure. 4. Direct traffic at several locations to assist racers to the grid or back to their paddock area after each run.. Timing and Scoring, we need about 5 volunteers each day. You will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start/finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but it is the heart beat of the race. Tech and Scales, we need a volunteers each day to help check the Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales. The Corners, we need volunteers to assist the SCCA corner-workers at each corner. This is truly where the action is! Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 profession-
al SCCA corner workers. For each corner, we assign a maximum of 2 volunteers to assist the SCCA corner workers. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. It’s amazing how much you can learn while watching skilled drivers go through a corner lap after lap. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!! The responsibilities for the corner are: 1.You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track; 2.In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag. 3. You may be asked to assist with any reporting of an on track incident. Notes. At no time would you go over the wall! Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour t-shirt are perfect. Pit Marshalls, This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the race steward. This position is needed during the Enduro. Each driver is required to make a

5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro. We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are, 1.Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc. 2.Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment 3.Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded. 4.Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Training will be provided by PCA officials. Miscellaneous Positions. We need other volunteers to help with the Friday and Saturday night activities This is where we raise the most money for the charities.
