NOTE

During a cars and coffee on Kent Island, my son spotted the speedometer on a Turbo S and said: daddy this one has 225 ... all he knew by that point was 200.

Since then we started to research into this and so this is what we learned so far (correct me if I am wrong):

Boxster has 175, Boxster S 195, Spyder 200, Carrera and Carrera S 200, Turbo S 225, GT3 225 (all numbers are mph).

Unfortunately, while I am writing this, my 911 is on the lift waiting for the bent rim to be fixed. Cannot wait to be back on the road and enjoy driving it.

MESSAGE Greetings Everyone,

I am writing from the Porsche Treffen event at the Homestead in Hot Springs, VA. The resort is fabulous and the twisty, curvy roads we all love and enjoy, are outstanding.

Welcome new members! I hope you take the opportunity to get involved. There will be a New Member Party at our valued sponsor, Porsche Hunt Valley, on May 24th and I hope to see you there. Our Committee Chairs will be available to discuss our activities, such as Autocross, Tours, Socials, Technical Sessions, and many others. I look forward to seeing you at future events, and we have many, so check out our website!

A huge thank you to all our volunteers. The PCA is run by volunteers and you are a huge part of our success and growth. Club participation is way up and we are seeing our numbers rise steadily, so please consider volunteering and help provide exciting, well run activities for our 1900+ members. On a related note, the position of Community Service Chair is open, so please let me know if you are interested.

Our Tour and Rally Chair, Rich Ehrlich and our Safety Chair, John Jensen conducted our first annual Tour and Rally Academy at our valued sponsor, Porsche Silver Spring. Many members who enjoy touring and want to get involved, learned how to design and develop a tour route. The material also covered how to be a lead driver and a sweep. We are always looking for volunteers to help make our tours run smoothly. John Jensen provided us with the PCA Safety Program, highlighting the many safety aspects we need to be cognizant of for safe and uneventful tours. Please be mindful that these are not races, these are beautiful scenic tours we design and drive and are meant to be enjoyed, not raced. PCA continually puts much emphasis on safety and speed. Let’s remember to follow the laws and speed limits.

Our April dinner was at The Lodge in Annapolis. This was a fan favorite last year and our Social Chairs, Stephanie and Randy, set up a return visit. A sellout of about 50 people enjoyed the rustic restaurant and the farm to table menu. Our next social dinner is May 13th at the Fisherman’s Inn across the bridge in Grasonville.

President Chesapeake Region, PCA The Autocross season began with two events at Ripken Stadium this month. Autocross is a social gathering of new and old friends with the opportunity to truly test the limits of your Porsche and gain confidence in your driving ability. The next autocross event is May 17th.

On April 26th the PCA Chesapeake Region and Porsche Silver Spring teamed up for an exciting day of Sim Racing in support of Operation Motorsport, a nonprofit serving veterans with disabilities. There was a great turnout and everyone got many laps in at Road Atlanta.

We had a Tech Event at our valued sponsor, Porsche Owings Mills, where we witnessed their 1999 Carrera Restoration Challenge entry for the 2025 competition.

Peter Simpson, Service Manager, walked us through all their plans to transform the car to reduce weight, enhance aerodynamics, and boost engine performance. The final reveal is scheduled for late July.

Our first Rally of the year will be a fun Poker Rally on May 18th. We will be touring the western BWI area historic towns, picking up playing cards on the way, and finishing at Guinness Open Gate Brewery for trophies and lunch. Even if you are not interested in the tour, please join us. Proceeds of the tour will be donated to Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARC). May the best hand win!

The 2025 Chesapeake Challenge 56 planning has begun under the leadership of Kristen Allen. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 20th, at Frey’s Brewing Company in Mt. Airy. Once Kristen has everything lined up, I’m sure she will be looking for volunteers, so thank you in advance for considering supporting this longest running PCA event.

The two-year cycle for the Board of Directors elected positions will be up at the end of this year. The positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary will be up for election later this year. Per the Bylaws, the Nominating Committee will be formed and candidates selected not later than August 15th.

The number of activities scheduled by the Club is truly remarkable. Too many to include here so please check the Club calendar and Motorsport Reg for all the details.

Thanks to all of you for making Chesapeake Region so much fun!

It’s the cars that bring us together, but it is the people that make it special.

PCA-Style A quarterly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 30, 25 years ago.

50 years ago, the PATTER was finally printed in real ink instead of a spirit duplicator machine (mine, as it turns out) and in May 1975, Editor Dave Ford reported that the Chesapeake Region finally reach 100 members!

And for reference, the entire PCA had just under 15,000 total members.

We were still meeting at Peerce’s Plantation Restaurant, in the upstairs banquet hall in the back building and Bob Schmitt was President. Charles Gillet, president and owner of 40 West Porsche+Audi, was the guest speaker, discussing the “good old days” of sports cars.

(trivia question: what PCA member is a former Editor of Road & Track magazine? Ans: Charles Gillet. Details upon request).

Gas station owner Bill McHenry reported on the recent Autocross School that he and Lee Raskin ran at the AAI lot on York Road in Cockeysville, which was well attended. Over a dozen of photographer Bill Morgenstern’s pics were reproduced. Chesapeake Challenge 8 was announced for August 16-18, and treasurer McHenry reported that we had $547.60 in the bank. (Don’t worry; the average price of gas then was $0.57/gal). Ab Tiedemann also announced plans for a wine & cheese pool party, which would be held at the home of your writer’s parents. And a tour of CARLING’S Brewery was in the planning stages. In Porsche news, it was reported that the last of the 914 models would be produced in June

40 years ago, Ted Goodwin was President, and Lee Raskin (donor of many of this era PATTER) was Patter EIC. Central Penn Region President and avid car dealer/ collector Don Meluzio (he owns one of the rare Porsche 901s!) invited Chesapeake Region to their annual picnic/volleyball game in June, to be held at the Chantilly Farm in York. We were now meeting at Vaccarino’s Restaurant (Rt 40 at St. John’s Lane, location now closed but Vaccarino’s Pastry is still open on O’Donnell St). Membership was up to 200 folks but only a handful (like 20) show up for the monthly meeting. Chesapeake Challenge XVIII was announced; Ted Goodwin will chair. A spring gimmick/poker rallye was announced that Jim Sorensen will chair.

30 years ago (1995) Bob Gutjarh was president, Manny Alban was editing the Patter, and we were meeting at Fiori’s Restaurant with optional dinner (at about $10 per person) although there was no May meeting due to the fact that Challenge 26 was held in May this year, headquartered at the Double Tree Guest Suites just off of Nursery Rd. The entire May issue was basically a Challenge synopsis, with current attendance list (with 65 cars and over 100 people registered as of late April), concours score sheet blanks, autocross course layout, and info on the rallye, which would be a Regularity Run. It was looking like the Challenge was going to be a highly successful event!

For the 19th consecutive year, the Chesapeake Region Crab Feast, sponsored by Porsche Silver Spring, will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 23rd- rain or shine! Bring your appetite and your Porsche for a wonderful, relaxing outing with friends and family.

There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, dogs and drinks that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide.

Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 18th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks.

One of the fun traditions of the Crab Feast is our noncompetitive car show where cleanliness and condition have never mattered for cars to receive the attention of the judges. It’s all tongue and cheek- the awards are always fun and unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal.

This year’s event is once again scheduled on its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day.

And a side dish, salad, or dessert option available on registration, but is first come first serve; if there is a disproportionate amount of one dish, later registrants will be asked to bring a different dish.

Community

Service On April 26th, the Chesapeake Region and Porsche Silver Spring, with assistance from PCA, held a charity event in support of Operation Motorsport, a non-profit veteran-led charity.

The charity supports retired veterans by promoting recovery and reintegration into civilian life through motorsports.

Beginners and experts tested their skills on simulators loaded with Road Atlanta and Summit Point racetracks. These were so incredibly realistic and everyone had a terrific time, even the juniors that participated.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the event.

Porsche 993 Secondary Air Injection System 101 There is a large amount of misinformation surrounding check engine light issues, the Porsche 993 is no exception. The secondary air injection (SAI) system is just one of the many emissions system components that can illuminate the check engine light (CEL).

It all seems simple on the surface but can be trying during diagnosis if you are not totally sure of how each system operates.

993 SAI Emissions System

Purpose:

The smog pump is also known as the secondary air injection pump. Its single purpose is to pump ambient air into the exhaust. This ambient air contains rich combustible oxygen that heats up the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors quicker during cold engine start in an effort to reduce the tailpipe emissions.

The SAI system is designed to source ambient air for the electronically operated smog (air) pump from the engine air filter housing, through a vacuum controlled cut-off valve and a one-way check valve. The check valve doesn’t allow the air to be pushed from the exhaust back towards the SAI pump.

Brief SAI System Operation:

1) The DME (Digital Motor Electronics) ECU (Electronic Control Unit) tells a vacuum controlled changeover valve to open and also the smog pump when to operate.

2) The DME then observes the two pre-catalyst O2 sensors to confirm that the smog pump air (O2) from the top of the engine is reaching the exhaust manifolds at the bottom of the engine, inside the exhaust stream.

3) The two pre-catalyst O2 sensors confirm the elevated O2 content in the exhaust stream.

What’s the main issue:

Over the decades, it has been a common issue for the Porsche 911’s to prematurely wear out the exhaust and sometimes intake valve guides. As the valve guides wear out, they allow engine oil to pass through them, normally just ending up inside the exhaust manifolds and out the tailpipe as engine oil smoke.

Specific issues:

In the case of the Porsche 993, the SAI system has passages integral to the engine’s camshaft towers and cylinder heads. This is for the SAI air to reach the exhaust manifolds. The SAI air originates at the smog pump, then passes through a vacuum controlled changeover valve, a one-way check valve, then into a distribution block mounted on the top of the engine, then into two stainless steel pipes one to each side (bank #1 and bank #2) of the engine, and into the camshaft towers and finally into the cylinder heads terminating in the cylinder head exhaust ports.

Mother Nature :

Carbon comes from a petroleum product. As engine oil and gasoline get burned it turns into carbon. Carbon deposits have a tendency to clog the SAI ports, blocking them solidly with carbon. Solidified carbon is like concrete, it’s very dense and hard. Once this carbon blocks the SAI ports, the SAI air cannot get into the exhaust and the check engine light will be illuminated.

End result:

If the pre-catalyst oxygen sensors do not see enough O2 in the exhaust stream during SAI pump operation, the check engine light will be illuminated.

Accompanied by DME Secondary Air Injection faults P0410 and/or P1411.

Preventative Maintenance:

What can be done to keep this from happening? In all actuality, not much. You can change your engine oil and oil filters more often; we recommend the engine oil and both oil filters to be serviced every 3,000-5,000 miles. Utilize a high-quality boutique engine oil and even possibly drive your car more aggressively at times.

You can always utilize a Top Tier Hi-Test Supreme gasoline which usually burns cleaner.

You can even replace the SAI one-way check valve at a regular interval, such as every 30 40k miles.

Personally, we don’t recommend cleaning the SAI ports. As you can see, this carbon clogging issue is simply caused by faulty worn-out valve guides.

Cleaning out the SAI ports is simply like putting a Band-Aid on a shark bite.

Tech Session TPC Racing PCA Chesapeake Tech Session – TPC Racing

Our next Tech Event will be held at TPC Racing. TPC Racing is the Mid-Atlantic’s premier maintenance, service, tuning and modification center dedicated to solely to Porsches. They specialize in research and development and sales of high-performance modifications for Porsche sports cars and race cars, offering a wide range of vehicle upgrades. In addition, they have developed specialized suspension and innovative controllers for electronically managed shock absorbers. Best known for a line of forced induction solutions for the Porsche 911, Cayman, Boxster, a long-time focus on only one make, Porsche, has enabled TPC Racing to become experts in Porsche service, tuning, and racing.

Registration will be capped at 50 attendees. If the cap is met after registration, you will be waitlisted and may be eligible to attend if there's availability.

An Eastern Shore dining landmark since 1930, Fisherman’s Inn welcomes diners to its spacious dining rooms with panoramic water views. Their menu has a large selection of local dishes and both traditional and contemporary fare. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday night, May 13th at 6:30pm (cocktails at 5:30). PCA Chesapeake Poker Rally

PCA Chesapeake’s Tour & Rally Committee is pleased to offer a Poker Rally, on May 18th, Sunday. This rally was designed by our club’s Registrar, Marsha Buss. In celebration of my retirement from my career, I am bringing back the very first tour I developed for the Chesapeake Region. We will cover some of the very best roads in the mountains of Western Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania in this 150-mile route of truly enjoyable roads.

The first stage will bring us to Jimmy Joy’s Log Cabin Inn for an optional lunch. With the second stage being a round-trip drive on Pennsylvania Route 26, a road that is the equal of the Back of the Dragon. The tour will end in Breezewood, PA, where you can enjoy a rest stop before you head home.

Events We are so happy to report that Spring has most definitely returned to our PCA Chesapeake Region.

Randy and I are writing this from the beautiful Homestead Resort where we are enjoying the PCA Treffen. Tremendously beautiful drives, amazing roads that seemed custom made for Porsches, wonderful folks and beautiful (wow) cars, what’s not to love?

In April we gathered at The Lodge in Annapolis, with the very much appreciated help of member Steve Schuh, who is part of the ownership group for this restaurant and others in the our region. We were welcomed with reserved parking, which made for some great pics in front of the restaurant.

We started with “Happy Hour” at 5:30, a concept that we hoped might provide some time to mingle a bit before sitting down to dinner at 6:30. Seems to have been a success - please let us know your thoughts.

Dinner started with complimentary appetizers for each table. The restaurant’s menu has good depth and it was a treat to have the whole menu available. That is a bit unusual for a crowd of 50+, but the kitchen and servers handled it with aplomb. We hope to enjoy other restaurants that Steve’s group owns - looking at their Howard County and Gambrills locations for future visits.

Forty-three members o’ the Porsche Clan gathered for our traditional after St. Patrick’s Day Dinner at Kelsey’s Restaurant in Ellicott City. Many folks were seen checking out the buffet stations, only to find they were all empty. Surprise! We had the full menu from which to order, which was a terrific change of pace and really enhanced our dining experience. And the Guinness was very good, of course. Hats off to Kelsey’s – we’ll be back again…and again!

On Tuesday May 13th, the Club will travel across the Bay Bridges to Fisherman’s Inn. As previously reported, we have quite a number of members on the Eastern Shore and it’s nearly impossible for them to join us for Social Dinners in the middle or North parts of our Region. We are thrilled that the dinner is sold out! Fisherman’s Inn is similarly excited for our visit and they’ve presented a delicious menu that focuses on their signature seafood dishes (but with some variety for the meat eaters and vegetarians in our crowd, of course.) We’ll have marque parking and the restaurant wants to ensure we get some nice sunset pics with our shiny, beautiful cars.

In June we will travel to Turf Valley to a new restaurant, Mad Chef Kitchen. Marilyn Bushnell and I had a terrific lunch there last year, so it’s been on the radar. Steve and Marsha joined us for a reconnaissance mission a few weeks ago as well. The food was wonderful and our waiter had excellent knowledge and recommendations. And a good selection of wines. We hope that you’ll enjoy it as well. Registration is open we’re currently accepting waitlist reservations. Given that we are a month out, there’s a good chance that folks who are waitlisted can get in - so please don’t hesitate to register.

We’re starting our July Social Dinner with a presentation about “Porsche Fluid Dynamics” at Ralph’s Porsche near our final destination at Fratelli’s Italian & Seafood restaurant in Carroll County. Chuck and Ralph will give an overview of their shop.

Refreshments will be served by Monument City Brewing Company. At Fratelli’s you’ll enjoy casual dining with authentic Italian fare. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday night, July 15th at 5:30pm to meet at Ralph’s Auto Service and 6:30pm for dinner at Fratelli’s. We are already waitlisted, but you know what to do, right? ;-)

PCA Chesapeake 2025 Tour & Rally Event No. 3 – May 3rd

Come and join PCA Chesapeake’s Tour & Rally Committee for a drive to the annual Porsche-Only Swap Meet organized by the Central Pennsylvania Region of PCA at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. As you can see from the updated Tour and Rally schedule, we have many events over the next few months. April starts with our Tour Academy on April 5th. In May, we have the Drive to the Porsche Swap Meet as well as the ever-popular Safeway to the Bay Tour. Most importantly, we have a Poker Rally that will end at the Guinness Brewery on May 18th.

June sees us driving PA Route 26, and Thursday, June 12th brings us the inaugural edition of the Weekday Wander. This is a new series of tours that will be held during the week and are in addition to our regular events.

PCA Chesapeake Poker Rally

PCA-CHS 2025 Tour & Rally Event No. 5 – Sunday, May 18th

PCA Chesapeake’s Tour & Rally Committee is pleased to offer a Poker Rally, on May 18th, Sunday. This rally was designed by our club’s Registrar, Marsha Buss. Our 36-mile scenic drive will start in Linthicum Heights and travel the historic roads of Elkridge, Ellicott City, and Catonsville. The rally will end at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery, in Halethorpe, MD, where we will have an awards ceremony and lunch.

If you would prefer to follow a lead driver just let us know when you register. We will put you in a tour group if there is sufficient interest.

The proceeds of this event will benefit the Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS), a 501(c) organization. BARCS is an open-admission shelter, meaning we accept and care for all animals in need regardless of health, history of abuse or neglect, age or temperament.

Weekday Wander #1

PCA-CHS 2025 Tour & Rally Event No. 7 – Thursday. June 19th Please join us for the inaugural edition of the Weekday Wander Tour. These tours will be held at irregular intervals and will feature past favorite tours as well as some new tours. Since these tours will be strictly limited in size, we will be able to visit some places that would not be able to handle a larger group.

This first edition will feature a past tour route that was extremely enjoyable that will end at the Manor Tavern in Monkton, where all are welcome to stay for lunch.

But register fast, this tour is limited to only 20 cars.

AX Racing in April can always be a little dicey because spring weather tends to be rather erratic.

Autocross #1 was scheduled for Saturday March 12th and, sure enough, the forecast was less than perfect. That led to serious repercussions with last-minute cancellations (that had me scrambling to replace entrants from the waitlist) and more noshows than usual. We managed, but it certainly made life interesting.

The team arrived on-site at 5:30 AM (a change from the 5:00 AM arrival time we’ve used in the past) to rainy, chilly, and windy conditions. I had 4 layers on, including a rain jacket – quite unusual for me. How chilly was it early on? I had brought a plastic container to use to cover our trailer timing cable pass-through for rain protection and when I tried to cut an opening in the container for the cables, the thing just shattered. Had to chuckle at that! The good news is that the rain stopped about 7:15, but it stayed windy for the entire event. At least we didn’t have to race in the rain!

This was our first regular-season race with the equipment trailer stored in White Marsh, so there were a lot of new logistics to be handled. Getting a truck to move the trailer, getting the trailer where it needed to be, getting cars where they needed to be… It worked, but not very well. We managed, but we’ll call it a work in progress.

There was great interest in our first race with 104 registrations.

words by Greg Hartke Early cancellations (when entrants’ schedules changed) and late cancellations due to weather or mechanical problems left us with 77 against a cap of 80, of which 70 showed up. That’s kind of par for the course when there’s any rain in the forecast. Even though if you paid close attention to the forecast, you could expect it would be dry from early morning onward, people still shy away from even the possibility of rain. It’s they’re loss.

When we arrived at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen for our race, there was an RV parked in the middle of what would be a slalom for the course that day.

Obviously, something had to be done about that and not having any authority myself, I waited for the Ripken event director to show up at 6:30 and sicced her on them. She banged on the door, woke ‘em up, and sent them on their way. It’s illegal for them to park there, but things like that happen routinely, so we just have to deal with it. It’s fortunate that a Ripken representative is always there while we’re racing to take care of such things.

We had our challenges setting up. It’s a big lot, so of course it takes longer to set up and you can ask any of the Team how much fun it is to do that in the cold, rain, and wind. ;) Getting the equipment set up at the trailer was interesting in the wind, and rain too, and required some changes to what we would normally do because everything wanted to blow all over the place.

On the plus side, the generator started perfectly on the first pull after the no-oil fiasco when I tried to start it before the AX School. No trouble there at all.

However, the damaged cable that I had spliced during the off-season (and which worked fine for the AX School) seemed to not be working properly for AX#1, so we had to swap it out for a replacement. I guess I’ll have to try again to fix that puppy. With that taken care of, we discovered right before race time that the display wasn’t working. That was unexpected because it had been working fine (in the rain) when we first set up and the rain had long since stopped. We worked at it, but never did get it working again, so drivers had to rely on live timing to see their times. Not ideal, but workable.

This was really important because if you started the slalom out of position, there was no way to recover. When I entered the slalom, I made sure I focused on the far end instead of the near cones because I find that helps me backside the cones as I pass through the slalom. (That little trick was taught to me by POT AXer Pam Clay many years ago.)

I swung a bit to the left as I exited the slalom to set up the hard right in the lower right-hand corner of the map. Making sure I took a late apex there and let my speed carry me a bit wide on exit ensured that I set up the proper entry for the run up to the Chicago corner below worker station #3. That Chicago corner was tricky and if you didn’t take the right line into it, you’d push wide and lose all kinds of time (if you didn’t hit cones). The proper way to do it was to aim down the right side so you could brake hard, and slant left into and through the corner. Mark and I had offset the cones following the Chicago corner so that they amounted to a chicane, which flowed better than the original short slalom. I carried a bit of speed through this chicane and was then hard on the brakes to rotate the car for the closing sequence. I worked to align the car properly (which means braking hard enough to keep from pushing wide after the chicane) and it was nearly a straight shot to the final corner into the stop box. I took a late apex and rolled on power such that I barely made it inside the left cone for the final straight run into the stop box.

The first car was off at 9:43 AM. It was scheduled for 9:30, but the (planned) later arrival and problems that cropped up resulted in the late start.

I’ll be monitoring this for AX#2 and we’ll adjust as needed. It was a quick course, so the event moved along at a nice pace, finishing at 2:24 PM with everyone getting 6 runs. We could have easily done more runs, but it was really chilly out there and I didn’t want anyone to freeze to death. ;) AX Team Member Phong Nguyen quickly assembled the results after the event and the top 10 placing Porsches for AX#1 were:

I keep mentioning that it was chilly. How chilly was it? I worked timing in the trailer for both heat 1 and heat 3 and the way the trailer was oriented, we were facing north. Naturally the wind was blowing from that direction and it blew hard enough that it sent the hot chocolate that Marilyn brought me off the desk and all over the place. What a mess! I was driving in the second heat and when the first heat was done, my hands were so cold that I couldn’t secure my helmet properly for driving. Sheesh! I spent the whole third heat in the trailer begging for nothing to go wrong (it didn’t) so that I could get out of that wind blowing through the trailer.

Actually, my original plan was to split 3rd heat timing with Phong (who did timing for heat 2), but he was doing such a great job getting things together for quick packing when we finished that I thought it better to let him continue with that work.

Despite the somewhat tough conditions (it really wasn’t so bad out of the trailer), we really had a good time and the participants certainly seemed to enjoy driving Mark’s course. You never know, but we did get several unsolicited thumbs up for the course and the event. Good enough. As always, the Team was stellar – they’re such a pleasure to work with!

Lesson learned: storing the trailer in White Marsh doesn’t work. It just took too much time and was too difficult to shuttle back and forth. The team actually found another storage facility in Aberdeen after AX#1, so I drove up between AX#1 and AX#2 and secured that for us. We transitioned to the new storage for AX#2, but that’s a story for another day.

By the time you read this, AX#2 (Sunday, April 27th) will already be in the books. AX#3 will be held on Saturday May 17th and there are still spots open. The SCCA will be holding a ProSolo race that weekend at Northwest Field in Landover, which means some of our regulars will be there instead of at our race. For that reason, we still have spots open, so if you’d like to get out and tear around like your hair’s on fire at a CHS PCA AX, now’s your chance!

From Desert Dust to Club Sport Dreams Porsche Owings Mills Builds a 1999 996 Carrera for the Porsche Restoration Challenge

When most people think of a base 1999 996 Carrera, unflattering comments about headlights and IMS bearings come to mind. But when we discovered a oneowner example, sun-faded and sand-blasted in the Utah desert with just 72,000 original miles, we saw something more. We saw the bones of a future club sport icon — and maybe, just maybe, a chance to give the most underappreciated 911 its due.

Our goal? To build the 996.1 that could’ve been.

Somewhere between a base model Carrera and the first-generation GT3 that was never brought to the U.S. Think GT3 spirit, base Carrera simplicity, and a pinch of outlaw ambition. A lightweight, analog, driverfocused club sport version.

The Starting Point

The car rolls off the trailer in its original Mirage Metallic over Savannah Beige — a brown-on-brown color combo that lovingly reminds us of every 1990s Toyota Camry. It’s as if it were parked and forgotten right after Y2K. But beneath the desert patina and dried-out, torn seats is something special: a first-year, cable-throttle 911 Carrera. Light. Mechanical. Revhappy. And built on the same Zuffenhausen line that produced the final air-cooled 993s.

In other words — Porsche history, hiding in plain sight.

Club Sport Conversion, In Progress

We begin the transformation with the essentials: a factory-style Aero Kit, including the iconic “taco” wing — because no proper club sport build should lack a bit of aerodynamic flair. We're upgrading to a lightweight flywheel, installing a performance exhaust, and improving airflow with a 997 airbox and performance intake plenum.

We’re keeping the original 3.4L flat-six, but with these subtle enhancements, the car promises to be more responsive and engaging than ever. To ensure longterm reliability and performance, we’re resealing the engine, replacing all major maintenance items, performing a full tune-up, and addressing the infamous weak point by upgrading the IMS bearing.

It’s about preserving the soul of the early 996 while giving it the attention it deserves — and a second chance to shine.

To dial in the handling, we will install Bilstein sport shocks paired with ROW M030 springs, giving the car a lowered stance and sharper road feel — without sacrificing everyday drivability.

Inside, we’re swapping the original shifter for a 997 shifter assembly, known for its tighter, more precise action. As a finishing touch, we’re fabricating a handmade Carrera GT-style wood shift knob — a nod to Porsche’s analog greatness, blending motorsport edge with classic refinement.

The car will be repainted in Amethyst Metallic, a bold callback to Porsche’s more daring color palette from decades past. The interior will retain elements of its original Savannah Beige, but we’re two-toning it with black accents for a cleaner, more focused aesthetic.

The centerpiece? A pair of bespoke, period-correct GT3-style seats from England, finished in Savannah leather with pepita inserts — tying together heritage, motorsport, and style in a way that feels right at home in a club sport build.

And then there are the Gemballa wheels — a rare eBay find from Germany. It wasn’t until after we clicked “Buy Now” and translated the listing that we realized the offsets were more suited for a widebody. Instead of choosing the rational solution (returning them), or the simpler one (machining the hubs), we chose the stubborn and bold path: fabricating custom widebody rear quarter panels to make them fit.

Because really, what’s a challenge without a little creative overreach?

Why the 1999 Matters

This build isn’t just about parts — it’s about celebrating a pivotal moment in Porsche history. The 1999 996 marks the first year of the water-cooled 911.

It's raw, analog, and shockingly lightweight by modern standards. It still has the cable throttle, and it feels like a true driver’s car. It’s the missing link between air-cooled character and water-cooled progress.

At Porsche Owings Mills, we're building this car not just to turn laps — but to turn heads, spark conversation, and prove that early 996s deserve a seat at the enthusiast table.

Sometimes, the best builds don’t start with unicorns.

The Singer Classic Turbo represents a bold new chapter in the evolution of the reimagined 911. Building on the legacy of Singer’s original Classic services—where the air-cooled 964 chassis became the canvas for obsessive craftsmanship—the Classic Turbo pays homage to the legendary 930 Turbo while pushing the boundaries of design, engineering, and execution.

Launched in 2022 after years of meticulous development, each build remains rooted in the 964 but incorporates modern materials, bespoke components, and subtle nods to the original Turbo’s unmistakable character. From functional bumper bellows to the specially formulated Whale Tail finish, every detail is carefully considered, echoing Singer’s unwavering commitment to the mantra: "everything is important."

This 1990 911 Turbo has been Reimagined by Singer and is the first Classic Turbo Study to be offered at auction. Known as “The Sun Valley Commission,” it was featured in the Classic Turbo introductory video driven by Chris Harris. Finished in a bespoke Dirty Oak Green Metallic, it features an interior trimmed in Ivory leather with woven Olive accents, Olive carpets, a matching dash roll, and Black wood detailing.

Underneath, it’s equipped with Singer’s sport suspension system and Ivory-finished Brembo calipers, and showed only 267 miles on the odometer.

As this is the first Classic Turbo Study, there are no comps. Also unknown is how much it costs to commission an example of your own, but I’d imagine that price to be approaching the $1m mark as you check off option boxes. However, we do know that the car was estimated between $1.75m and $2.25m preauction, which was a bit of a stretch in my eyes, but not much, as it sold for $1,680,000 inclusive of buyer’s premium.

I’m definitely feeling the mixed use of body parts on this 2005 911 Carrera S Coupe as it has been fitted with an OEM Aerokit front bumper, Turbo S side skirts, EMC2 rear skirts, and 991 headlights (who knew!). It also features factory optioned PCCB brakes and Sport Chrono Package plus, but the real kicker on this 88,000-mile 997 C2S is the upgraded 4.0-liter out back. A very interesting build, but it will probably be held back due to the Tiptronic transmission. Manual swap? Why not, everything else has been swapped Another great-looking, modified 911 is this 1996 911 Coupe refinished in its original shade of Tabasco Red Metallic with a RUF front bumper and Turbostyle rear spoiler. Other modifications on this 106,000-mile 993 include Gold 19” BBS LM wheels, Bilstein PSS10 coilovers, Fabspeed X-pipe with Fister mufflers, and an aftermarket ECU tune. But just like the car above, it too is fitted with a Tiptronic transmission While a 40th Anniversary 911 is at the top of my shopping list, a Vesuvio Metallic 911 Coupe like this 1999 911 Carrera 4 Coupe 6-Speed is on that list as well as Vesuvio is one of my favorite Porsche colors. This example shows 94,000 miles on the odometer and features aftermarket wheels along with a 997-spec shifter and ignition coils. It last sold online in October of 2024 at a final bid of $19,619, and has subsequently received a decent amount of service work since. That last bid is a bit below comps, but I’d expect a bump this time around thanks to the work performed since the last sale.
