FEATURED

STORY

by Bob Rassa

PCA-CHS Historian

Happy 65th Anniversary, Chesapeake Region Seriously, who knew, back in September 1955, when northern Virginia resident and Porsche 356 owner Bill Sholar, realizing that technical information and technical support of these German cars was not easy to come by, decided to start a group of fellow owners to try to alleviate the problem? He called the group the Porsche Club of America or PCA, and at its initial founding had 85 charter members, and as the group started to grow and gather more members rather quickly, and develop some rules and Bylaws, it decided to extend charter membership to all those joining before Jan 1, 1956, resulting in nearly 200 charter members.

As the new Club started to gather members from outside of the NoVa-DC area, such as in Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, New York Connecticut and beyond, and the club started to hold events such as the annual Porsche Parade and others, the executive committee of the new Club decided they needed a regional definition and organizational structure, so that local groups of Porsche owners could organize their own local events, which would lead to more publicity and more members. So in early 1957, the PCA Region construct was created.

The first of these new Regions was Potomac, as of February 1, 1957, followed by Central New York, Northern New Jersey and Riesentoter in August 1957, then Chicago (September 1957) and San Diego (December 1957), 1958 brought 4 new Regions: Rocky Mountain, Southeast Michigan, Metropolitan New York and Penn-Ohio (now defunct). Nine more came into being in 1959, and 13 more in 1960. And finally, in March of 1961, just 6 years after the club’s founding, the Chesapeake Region of PCA was founded, PCA’s 39th, as 10 members signed a charter

20

Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

petition. Those members were: Bob Fusselbaugh, Art Bartholomee, Fred Touchton, Albert (Ab) Tiedemann, Kitty Bartholomee, Charles McCormick, Spencer Gulick, Knowlton Long, Heinz Werner Bade, John Garner, Lucy Dawson, and Harold Hiscox. Bob Fusselbaugh was listed as President, and Lucy Dawson, wife of local sports car enthusiast Bob Dawson (who did NOT own a Porsche!) was listed as Secretary, A few of those names should sound familiar to some current members: Ab Tiedemann was our longest-serving member until his passing about 5 years ago.

Knowlton Long was the owner of Stuttgart Imports, a 2bay small Porsche dealership in Towson at 30 E. Susquehanna Ave (1 bay for service, one for showroom), Art Bartholomee was the primary mechanic there, along with Ralph Simmers who came along a bit later. As an amusing note, the charter petition letter was addressed to “Mr. Charles Berdler, PCA National President”, although his correct name was Charles Beidler. Fortunately, Charlie overlooked this wee error. PCA as a whole was still rather small back in 1961, and while actual records prior to January 1963 are lost, total membership at the start of 1963 was 2,024 primary members, and the club was growing at an annual rate of about 350 members, so total membership in March of 1961 was probably in the order of 1,400 primary members.

How the name “Chesapeake” was coined is lost to history, but can be deduced by the fact that the Chesapeake Bay dominates the area, and Chesapeake Bay area is a common description. Not too much is known about events held by the Region in those early days as there was no newsletter on record that we can find, nor any minutes of meetings, but we suspect that there weren’t any of note. We do know that meetings were held in the whitewashed basement of the Deutsches Haus Restaurant at 1212 Cathedral St, and it was a bit dingy at best but hey! German food was available upstairs! When your author joined PCA in the mid-sixties, along with Steve and Frank Shap, John Ames, Don Riggs, and Stan and Bernice Bailey, we attended our first meeting and it was - well, dull, with maybe a dozen attendees. The President was an architect named Larry Ewald, and the VP was Heinz Werner Bade, and the main entertainment was a discussion of Mr. Ewald taking his 356B coupe out of his garage on St. Paul St and out into the county for a nice Saturday drive.

contest and Earl Harter of Central Pennsylvania Region (we attracted nearby Region members to our now interesting meetings) submitted the name Chesapeake Challenge, which was selected. We advertised the event in PANORAMA and at its first outing in August 1968, we had 42 cars entered, 14 from Chesapeake Region including several guests, and 28 from outside of our Region and from 7 neighboring Regions. totaling 76 people. We did a Friday night reception-pool party at my place in Timonium, Saturday morning Concours d/ Elegance at Goucher College, Saturday afternoon TSD rally around Baltimore County, and Sunday morning Autocross at Eudowood Plaza on Joppa Rd (now Towson Place) - remember Maryland’s so-called Blue Laws were in effect, so shopping centers were closed on Sundays, as were all primary retail except for grocery stores and pharmacies. 11 cars entered the Concours, 20 did the rally, and 34 entered the autocross. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost the winners list, but I do recall that John Howe of Metro New York Region won the Concurs (black 356 Speedster), and Bob and Phoebe Harper (Potomac Region) won the rally, and Bob won his class in the autocross. First overall were Bob and Phoebe Harper.

Steve, Frank, Don, Stan and I decided this wouldn’t be enjoyable as-is, so at the next meeting we made a motion to vacate officers and elect a new slate – we expected it to fail but surprisingly, it passed unanimously! Your author was elected President, with Steve Shap as VP and Don Riggs as editor of a newsletter that we named The Porsche PATTER. The first thing I did was look for a new meeting location, which I found at the Holiday Inn on Cromwell Bridge Rd, at Loch Raven. Then I started providing entertainment, finding rental films (16 mm; I had a 16mm projector!) such as the Shell Racing Serres, a total of 6 of these by decade. At our 2nd meeting at the Holiday Inn we had 28 primary members, and we showed the 1st racing movie. Word got out, and by the 3rd meeting we had 60 attendees. We were revitalized! We had attendees that were friends of members who thoroughly enjoyed our entertainment.

I came up with the idea of a multi-event, multi-Region weekend event, based upon something I read about in Panorama called the West Coast Weekend, and the members wholeheartedly approved it. We held a naming Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

We used the Holiday Inn on Cromwell Bridge Rd at Loch Traven Bl as the host hotel, where we had room rates of $15.00 per night (2 people). This is a fact and not from memory as I still have the records from that event. We also held a Saturday evening banquet, also at the Holiday Inn, where prices were $4.25 per person, including tax & tip, for either Roast Top Round Steak or Maryland Crab Cake. On Sunday, after the autocross, we held a Victory Lunch for $3.00, with options of Broiled Chopped Sirloin or Honey Cured Ham. Events were priced a la carte, at $4.00 for the Concours, $4.00 for the rally, $4.00 for the autocross, or the special package of $10 for all 3. Special Guests were Joe Wiedemann, Porsche of America Corp (POAC) East Coast Service Manager, and A. Ashley Carroll, PCA National Treasurer, plus Knowlton and Marjorie Long, owner of Stuttgart Imports, and Charles Gillet, owner of 40 West Porsche. We had a small selection of donated door prizes from about a dozen companies to highlight the event, and one of our features that that Chesapeake Region members could compete, but not for 1st overall, as we did not want to allow our members a home-field advantage.

Concours winner at early Challenge, believed to be John Howe’s 356A coupe

Chesapeake Challenge II was held August 1-3, 1969, again at the Holiday Inn, but we used the Hampton Mansion for the concours, and Kart-Um-Downs go-kart track in BelAir for the autocross. Stan Bailey was a member of the Sparrows Point Country Club so we did the Saturday banquet there, and we continued the Friday welcome reception at my place in Fox Chapel, Timonium, and held the Sunday victory lunch at the Holiday Inn. This time we had 48 cars, and Dan and Sandy Rowzie of Potomac Region took 1st overall. Guest of honor was again Joe Wiedemann, from POAC, plus Jane and Howard Nestlerode – Jane was the National Executive Secretary for PCA. Knowlton Long and Charles Gillet were also special guests.

Challenge III was held July 31-August 1 in 1970, but we moved the host hotel to the Quality Court Motel in

22

Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

Towson, on the east side of York Rd just inside the beltway 9 (now long gone), the Concours site to Goucher College, and the autocross site to a parking lot at Towson State Teacher’s College (now Towson University). We did the Saturday banquet at Longley’s Restaurant in Towson Plaza, and the Sunday victory lunch at the Quality Court. And of course, the Friday welcome party at my parent’s place in Timonium once again, as I had moved to my own house in Cockeysville. First overall again went to Dan and Sandy Rowzie, and guests of honor were Joe Wiedemann of POAC, PCA National President Charles Kuell, PCA National Treasurer A. Aashley Carroll, PCA National Vice-President Lou Marable, and Joe Berger, Zone 2 rep and PCA National Public Relations Chair.

We don’t want this to be just a historical tutorial on the Challenge, so we’ll cover just one more- but the Challenge is what started PCA-CHS on the road to hosting more competitive events that have been a mainstay of the Region. Chesapeake Challenge IV, the first one that I wasn’t involved in running, was held August 6-8, 1971, and Frank Shap chaired this one. We had 68 cars entered, and entrants included ’72 Parade Chair Wayne Potter, National Legal Advisor Bob Cornell, National PR Chair Joe Berger, National Treasurer A. Ashley Carroll, 40-West Porsche+Audi owner Charles Gillet, past National PCA President Max Bunnel, PCA National Executive Secretary Jane Nestlerode, PCA National President Charlie Kuell, Guest of Honor Brock Yates, and surprise guest David E. Davis, who showed up in a 600 Mercedes Pullman and told us he was doing a free-lance piece for Track & Field magazine (which we never saw). We used the Quality Court Motel again, We used Goucher College for the Concours, and held the autocross at the Ames Discount Store lot on Rt 40 East. The grand Saturday banquet, with Brock Yates as featured speaker, was at Ordelle Braase’s Flaming Pit Restaurant in the Padonia Village shopping center. We had door prizes galore, from about 30 vendors, but we also had a sad note- long-time Porsche dealer Knowlton Long had passed away earlier that year, so we named the 1st overall trophy the Knowlton Long Memorial Award in his honor. We also received a donation of $25.00 from Lufthansa Airlines, and we decided to take that money and buy a 1st-overall Chesapeake Region Award with it, this starting the tradition of allowing Chesapeake Region members to compete for overall. Ironically, the first recipient of the Lufthansa Award was this author, and the winner of the Knowlton Long 1st Overall Award was Bob and Phoebe Harper. We continued the Lufthansa 1st-Overall Chesapeake Member for many years even though Lufthansa never made any additional contributions – and let’s hope that this puts the subsequent error in trophy naming that happened due to unfortunate ignorance of the history to rest.

time-speed-distance (TSD) rally per member Club was designated a Team Trophy Rally, and participants accumulated points in the series – and of course, the less points you had – based on your rally score – the higher up you were in the standings. And we held a year-end banquet – a big deal with all the TSD rallyists attending, maybe 60-70 folks – to present the year’s TTR trophies. PCA didn’t have any TSD rally expertise other than myself and Steve Shap, both members of CSCC before we bought Porsches- so we were the ones who put on the TSD rally for PCA. VMC had several great TSD rally teams, as did MASE, CSCC, etc. TSD rallies were pretty big then, but clubs also did gimmick/poker rallies as well.

Photo from 1976 Chesapeake Challenge IX: (l-r) Bob Rassa, Challenge founder; unk; Mick Williams, PCA National President; Dave Ford, PCA Chesapeake President 1976; Ab Tiedemann, Challenge IX Chair; A. Ashley Carroll, past PCA National Treasurer.

The Region continued to host the Challenge every year except for 1987 and 1992, when the current Region President was unable to muster enough interest to get adequate volunteers to put on the event, and eventually – around the mid-90’s – the format changed to a 1-day event for Chesapeake Region members only, as apparently interest for multi-day and multi-Region events waned due to tons of competing interests such as kid sports and more.’ But another interesting story is that at one 70’s Challenge autocross that was held at Towson Plaza on Sunday, where I was autocross chair, a pleasant gentleman came to me as I was monitoring the event, and said “I am so glad to see the club holding events. I have been a member for several years and was disappointed by the lack of Porsche-related events.“ That gentleman was S. G. “Doc” Sullivan, whose offices and residence were on North St. Paul Street, and he handed me a check for $25, a nice sum for the early 70’s. He eventually went on to host our long-standing “afterholiday” party, that continues today.

There were other sports car clubs in the Baltimore area in the 60’s and 70‘s, the largest being Chesapeake Sports Car Club (CSCC). Where many PCA members also had membership, and including the Volvo Marque Club (VMC), Corvette Club of Baltimore (CCB), Maryland Automobile Sports Enthusiasts (MASE), and the Mustang Club of Maryland, as well as a latecomer, Autocrossers Inc. These clubs formed the Baltimore Area Sports Car Council, and I had PCA join this Council. The sole purpose of the Council was to coordinate events to avoid overlap, and that worked quite well, except for the fact that the Council also sponsored something called Team Trophy Rally (TTR) series, whereas one major

I became chair of the BASCC in 1969 – it rotated among the member clubs - and I suggested starting a companion Team Trophy Autocross series, which was approved with great zeal – thus starting PCA on its autocross journey. Both the TTR and TTA series ran for many years, until general interest in sports car activity started to peter out due to other interests such as soccermom stuff and more. The first type of event to dwindle was the time-speed-distance rally, since the effort was somewhat intense and required a good bit of brainpower, skill, and some equipment. The top rallyists used a rally board with equipment such as a Halda Speedpilot, electric odometers and super-accurate aircraft clock and stopwatches attached. I built mine in 1965.

Autocrossing continued on since many sports car owners liked the idea of driving their cars in a race-like environment, and fortunately Maryland’s “blue laws”, in effect since June 1, 1866, meant that shopping centers were basically closed, except for those with a grocery store or pharmacy but only that entrance was active, meaning that the majority of the parking lot was empty. So we used Towson Plaza (now Towson Town Center), Eudowood Plaza (now Towson Place), Hunt Valley Mall,

Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

Kart-Um-Downs (go-kart track, BelAir, now defunct), Laurel Race Course, and more. When blue laws were repealed in the mid-80’s – except for car sales – autocross sites became no longer available in general, and those lots that were available were in high demand. PCA-CHS continued on with autocrossing as best we could, including our autocross school series that we used to hold at Kart-Um-Downs and Hunt Valley Mall. Our autocross series is extremely popular and now draws literally hundreds of entrants over the season, which typically consists of 8 events.

Cars awaiting start of a tour – car in right foreground owner by Steve and Frank Shap; lady by car is Joanne Shap – lady in center of photo is Denny Kline’s thenwife Sam.

We also did tours, of course, such as a tour to St. Michaels that we did every few years, and a tour we did in April 1969 to the Porsche of America Corp (POAC) HQ in Teaneck, New Jersey, where east coast support director Joe Wiedemann gave us a very nice tour of the facility, including the training rooms, technical support area, car evaluation shop area and more. Technical sessions were also held regularly, sometimes at a member’s house and garage, sometimes at one of our dealerships but mainly 40 West Porsche+Audi, where Harry and mechanics explained basic service items such as oil changes, tuneups, wheel alignments, and more. 40 West was owned by PCA supporter Charles Gillet, and the service manager was a fine Brit named Harry Crook, who was more than willing to host us and share stories. On one occasion, Harry told us, a new 911 owner came in for his 5,000mile service and a tune-up, which included points, condenser, and spark plugs. Now, the new 911 used Bosch platinum-tipped plugs which were somewhat costly, running a bit over $5.50 each when standard Autolites were available for well under a buck. And remember (from the Challenge item above), a nice steak dinner cost a little over $4.00 including tax and tip, so a 5-buck spark plug was up there. So the tune-up bill ran to something over $100 and the owner was somewhat outraged. As he complained to Harry, reportedly Harry’s

24

Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

response was, “Well, if you drive like a sport, you have to pay like a sport.”. Understandably, that didn’t calm the owner down at all, and his rage escalated, eventually reaching Charles Gillet himself. Charles, being quite level-headed and calm, eventually settled the owner down, and later asked Harry to be a bit more demur when dealing with annoyed customers.

Tech session at author’s house – white Targa believed to be that of Bob & Connie Schmitt

Another fun activity was seeing new Porsche models before they were available in dealers, this brought about by the fact that your author, also a contributing editor of PANORAMA, was doing road tests with press cars of new Porsches, such as the 930 Turbo, 928, 924, 924 Turbo, 914, 914-6, 944, and more. I was given an early press car by Porsche of America Corp in New Jersey for 5 to 6 days and did an extensive road test, often bringing the car to a club meeting for member inspection. The more fun road test was undoubtedly the 928, which was such an exciting and high-performing car that I decided to give test rides to club members, so in April 1978 I had a new 928 for a week and announced at a club meeting that I would give test rides on a certain Sunday that I had the car. We met at Peerce’s Plantation Restaurant Sunday morning, and about 30 club members showed up – and we spent many hours driving around the Loch Raven area. FYI that road test in the June 1978 edition of PANO for those who care to look it up at pca.org.

Chesapeake has had some notable members over the years, such as Bruce “King Carrera” Jennings, who was atop 356 racer and donated the PCA Lazaar-Blanchard Enthusiast of the Year Award; Heinz Werner Bade, who was a master mechanic and did car prep for Bruce Jennings and many, many others, and who owned a shop in Timonium called Timo Corp, located basically where Smythe Jewelers is now; former Noxell President/CEO George Bunting (Noxell Corp makes Noxzema Skin Cream);past PCA National President and now PCA Technical Director Manny Alban; past Parade Chair (with Alban) Bob Gutjahr; past PCA Parade Coordinator and Parade Chair, current PCA National Vice-President and

soon to be National President Ron Gordon; SofTite Lug Nut socket developers/producers Ab Tiedemann and John Critcher; and many more. In addition, Chesapeake Region is home to seven of PCA’s longest-serving members – of PCA members joining in 1975 and prior, we have your author, then Bob Schmitt (March 1968), George Bunting (February 1969), Lee Raskin (June 1972), Theodore “Chip” Reichhart (September 1973), Ted Goodwin (July 1974), and John Ashford (May 1975). And even though this is also on the PCA-CHS website, we include the full (known) list of past and current elected officers and Challenge chairs, for your info.

The Chesapeake Region is going strong today, with over 1,300 primary members, 7 or 8 autocrosses a year, at least 10-12 tours each year, several breakfasts, brunches or dinners, and even a rally or two. We don’t do a standalone Concours d’Elegance, but still hold one as part of the annual Challenge, which will be Oct 3 this year at the

Elkridge Harford Hunt Club on Pocock Rd in Monkton. We also do a bunch of technical sessions, mostly at one of the dealers in the area, plus an occasional Concours prep session, which will be this year at Westminster Speed & Sound on August 22.

And while full member meetings are a thing of the past, we still hold a number of New Member meetings, at either a one of the dealerships or at a restaurant. And there are plenty of opportunities for member involvement, either running an event or helping out, so volunteer today! You won’t regret it. Here’s to another bunch of happy Porsche years, and decades, of fun.

Author’s note: All of the data noted herein is factual, since I was there personally. I have the dubious distinction of being the longest-serving member of the Chesapeake Region, and incidentally, am also the 84th longest serving member of the whole Porsche Club.

2007 Boxster Base. Arctic Silver. Tiptronic. I paid $11,000 with a folder of receipts.

What’s your Porsche story? Tell us about what started ‘it’ for you.

I have always had a fun car. I never knew Porsches could be so affordable. I have always dreamed of owning and “exotic” or “Super” car… this is as close as I can get.

What’s the story of your first car?

Was looking for another fun car. I have had a lot of classic cars, 1965 Mustang, 1965 Fairlane, 1966 Fairlane Convertible, 1955 Ford Wagon. 1985 Fiero GT (x2), 1986 Corvette, 2002 Camaro, and a 2003 Supercharged Mini Cooper. I wanted something different and I thought, hmmm… what about a Porsche.

If you could own any Porsche which would it be and why?

I love the Boxster Spyders and the Cayman GT4. I love the look of them.

PCA 70th Event:

Car Stories Robert Rohrbach’s

1964 Porsche 356C Rob is a 47-Year PCA Member (either he joined as a baby or there is a lot of plastic surgery going on :))

Our 1964 Porsche 356C has been a cherished member of our family since 1986, when my father acquired it as the third owner from a local dentist in our hometown of Cincinnati. The car’s competitive past is evident in its silver paint, a testament to its former racing endeavors prior to our ownership. Notably, the car arrived in the U.S. as a European model in the uncommon color of sky blue. Produced in May 1964, the car was delivered from the factory to the Hans Kahrmann Volkswagen-

Porsche dealership in Fulda, Germany, one of Porsche’s four original dealerships. It still exists as one of the marque’s largest dealerships to this day.

32

Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

The 1964-65 356C represented the culmination of the 356’s 17-year evolution, incorporating several enhancements over its predecessor, the 356B. Notably, the key differences between the 356B and the 356C lie primarily in performance and mechanical refinements. The 356C introduced four-wheel disc brakes, replacing the drum brakes of the 356B, which significantly improved braking performance. The 356C was also given larger engine options, with the base model producing 75 horsepower versus the 356B’s 60 and a new SC variant offered 95 horsepower versus the 356B Super90 variant’s 90. Both B and C models shared the same “T6” body style introduced in 1962, but the 356C had slight updates such as revised wheels and hubcaps to accommodate the disc brakes. Interior finishes and dashboard switches also became more modern and functional over the 356B.

Events Our July dinner at Victoria’s Gastropub in Ellicott City was a sold out smash! Lots of good food and great conversation if the noise level in the room was any indication. The food also got a thumbs up. We’ve been to this restaurant several times and we’ll definitely be back: good food, good parking and centrally located in our Region, what’s not to love?

by Stephanie Reuer

By the time this is published, we’ll have completed our visit to the Blackwall Barn at the Rotunda in Baltimore. We’ll report on the evening in the next issue. I am really looking forward to visiting this beautiful, historic building.

In September, we return to The Boatyard Bar & Grill in Annapolis. This return visit is to accommodate the many folks that missed out earlier this year that were on the waitlist. After they’ve had the opportunity to register, we opened it up for other folks that would like to try this iconic Annapolis destination. It’s now open for all Members to register. What we like about The Boatyard is the large, diverse menu and the quality of the food, along with the “sailboat racing” ambience.

And just like that, we’ll be discussing our Fall and Winter Social Dinners in this space next time. Tempus Fugit, indeed.

As a reminder, we continue to follow a rotation that takes to restaurants to the following areas of our Region: North Region, Howard County 1, Howard County 2, and South Region. This seems to work best as the Howard County location is in the center of our Region, which is easier for most folks. We do continue to visit the Northern and Southern parts of our Region as well throughout the year.

We’ll see you at the next Social Dinner!

Also, in the afternoon, before we gather for dinner at the Boatyard, we are encouraging folks to join us for a two hour sail aboard the 74’ Schooner, the Woodwind, sailing out of Annapolis Harbor, just a short walk or water taxi from our dinner location. We will set sail at 3:00 p.m. The cruise will allow us to view the US Naval Academy, Annapolis Harbor, Severn River, Chesapeake Bay and scenic view of the Annapolis skyline. Depending on the wind direction, we may be able to sail to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or Thomas Point Lighthouse. Be on the lookout for the announcement for this really iconic and fun Annapolis tradition. Stephanie has taken many a delegation of international visitors onboard and it has always been one of their favorite experiences while visiting the DC area. We thought it would be fund to share the experience with our Porsche friends. BTW, the boat holds 30 folks and we have not reserved a specific number of spots. If you are interested, please register when you receive notification from Marsha Buss about the event. (Also, if you aren’t signed up for the dinner at The Boatyard, but want to join the sailing adventure, that’s perfectly fine!)

Tour News

July brought us one of our best tours, the Battlefield and Backroads tour created by Dan McNally. Sadly, the smoke from the wildfires and a little bit of rain put a damper on this one. But we ended up with a lovely day and fantastic route.

Since there was no one place in Gettysburg that could accommodate the whole group, we broke into smaller groups and visited several different places. Kathy and I ended at the Fourscore Beer Company, which was quite good.

Dan and Angela did a fantastic job on this tour. Dan was kind enough to let us in on his secret routes and let me tell you… they are good! We will be revisiting this area again in the future.

Most of my time has been taken up with the final preparations for the Zum Schulhaus Fahren from August 7-9. Even for a relatively small event, there are a lot of logistics, including a special permit from the city of White Sulphur Springs, finalizing counts and organizing the swag. Stay tuned for a full write up on this event next month.

Also, we still have spots available on the Weekday Wander #6; A Tour of a Different Sort, on August 19th, the Off-Road tour on September 8th, and the Motor to the Museum on September 26th. Stay tuned for an announcement soon about the September 26th tour.

If you are registered for the Off-Road tour, I could use a few more lead drivers. Please let me know if you are willing to lead a group.

Which brings me to an important point; as you know, tours are very popular (as are social and tech events), and all have limited capacity. For tours, our limits are defined by the capacity of start or end points, as well as the number of lead and sweep drivers. I encourage you to register for these events as soon as you can, as they will often fill up quickly. I also encourage you to still register even if the event is full, as we are often able to fill in people from the waitlist

But this comes with an obligation on your part; As soon as you know you can’t make it, please cancel your registration so we can fill the spot from the waitlist. Not only does this help other Chesapeake members attend these high demand events, but it also helps us do similar events in the future. Especially with tours, the day of the event generally too late to fill in from the waitlist. I do understand that sometimes things come up at the last minute, such as car trouble or health issues, and that it is sometimes unavoidable to not be able to attend. But other than those last-minute emergencies, please try to cancel as soon as possible so we can either fill in from the waitlist, or adjust our totals.

Most importantly, I want to thank all of you for the success of the Tour & Rally Committee. Without your participation and support, none of this would be possible. Andy and I both thank you.

Radnor Hunt, Concours d’Elegance

September 13, 2026 Radnor Hunt in Chester County, Pennsylvania, hosts one of the best Concours d’Elegance that includes not only an incredible display of historic cars and motorcycles, but also is the only Concours that features horse drawn coaches and carriages. This year is the 29th anniversary event and takes place on September 13, 2026.

While the full event spans three days and includes a welcome barbecue on Friday, a rally and a formal dinner on Saturday in addition to other events that lead to the Concours on Sunday, I have only attended the actual Concours.

The first time I went to the Radnor Hunt Concours in 2021, I basically drove up 95 leading three other PCA members on the two-hour drive to the event. What sticks in my memory about that drive is that we were cruising along at a good clip in the second from the left lane, when I heard that noise. You know the one, the sound of a flat 6 turbo at high speed as a black, 930 Turbo blasted by us like we were not even moving.

The secret to going to Radnor Hunt is to park in the Motorsport parking area. While there is an upcharge, the lot leads directly to the display field. The Central PA region also hosts a courtesy tent for PCA members in this lot that serves sandwiches. Moreover, the Motorsports parking is its own car show, as it is packed full of a range of incredible cars. One year, there was a Carrera RS 2.7 featured in the Concours. The lot had two more real ones and one high-quality tribute car. In addition to PCA, there is a range of other owner’s clubs, including Bentley. Rolls Royce, Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini and others that have a presence in the lot. I’ve seen some very cool cars in the motorsports lot.

Each year, the Concours has a theme. One year, it was Bugatti, another year it was the Chrysler Imperial. This year, the featured brand is Bentley and featured is early race cars and a celebration of 125 years of Indian Motorcycles. But there is always so much more on the display field than just the featured marques. The Concours also serves as a fundraiser for the local Scouting USA troops as well as the Thorncroft Equestrian Center, which supports people with therapeutic and adaptative riding opportunities.

I’ve included a bunch of photos that I have taken at Radnor Hunt. Not only am I not a master photographer, but I often forget to take photos at all.

The Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance is another fantastic nearby automotive event that is well worth the day trip. While it will not be an official event, I plan to drive up there again this year, and the trip usually includes a stop at a Waffle House.

More information on the Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance, including purchasing tickets can be found on their website: https://radnorconcours.org/.

Woods, Wine and Wheels

PCA-CHS 2026 Tour & Rally Event No. 13 – Sunday, September 6th

Join the Chesapeake Region for an off-road drive around the Frederick City Watershed. While most of our tours are road focused, this light off-road tour meanders through gorgeous hills, tall green trees, feathery ferns, clear streams, impressive rock formations, wildlife in the Frederick Municipal Forest.

The tour starts and ends at Springfield Manor Winery, Brewery and Distillery in Thurmont, MD. The theme of the tour is driving at safe off-road speeds, enjoying the outdoor scenery and experiencing the Porsche Cayenne and Macan off-road ability. The four-door Porsche SUVs also provide opportunities to bring more passengers.

We have visited this area in the past and it has always been a great off-road drive and fun time at the winery after. The bumpy gravel roads are ideal for keeping our Porsche SUVs safe and scratch-free, while still adventuring where no (non-safari) 911 would dare.

WHEN and WHERE

Assembly Point: The Thurmont, MD address will be sent to confirmed registrants by September 5th

When: Sunday, September 6th, at 10:30 AM

Driver’s Meeting: 10:45 AM

AUTOCROSS

2026

AX

words by Greg Hartke

could have been a disaster depending on the parking area footprint and the course design for the day. I was not happy about this and asked the Ripken Event Coordinator to make sure in the future that I was told about such things before the event.

With the rest of the Team (Pinto Soin, John Cho, Phong Nguyen, and Doug Slocum) arriving shortly after Michael and me, we were quickly into our usual routine of getting the equipment laid out and set up and getting the course built. With the date of this event close to the solstice with its early sunrise, we actually had a little light to work with when we started. Such luxury! ;)

I don’t know what it is this year, but we have not been especially lucky with weather at our autocross events. I was exasperated that the weather forecast had been threatening for the whole week prior to Autocross #3 on Saturday June 27th at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, but there wasn’t anything I could do about it except cross my fingers and hope for the best. Early in the week before the event, the forecast was terrible, but it moderated during the week, though with rain still expected.

With years of experience, I certainly know what rain in the forecast means for AX: last-minute cancellations. A whole slew of them. There were fewer cancellations than I expected, but still a fair number. I was fortunate that I was mostly able to fill the driver list from the waitlist, so we did well regardless. In total we had 117 registered and actually had 88 Confirmed before the forecast took its toll. With last-minute cancellations and subsequent filling from the waitlist, we wound up with 86 Confirmed for race day, which I thought was very good for the situation at hand. On event day, we had only 2 no-shows, so a total of 84 drivers.

This one went pretty smoothly, but, as always, there were a few challenges. I arrived about 4:40 AM, but Co-chair Michael Ricketts had arrived even earlier to discover that there was a player parking area roped off in an area that overlapped our course design for the day. Whoa! That was certainly unexpected! Because of this, last-minute course design changes were in order to fit in the allowed area. The course design was changed to accommodate the newly allowed footprint, but that’s one of those things that

54

Porsche Patter - Issue 8 2026

After the Team finished with the course build, Michael and I went out for the test runs and spent a lot of time tweaking the course into shape. The area changed due to the unexpected player parking went thru multiple iterations before I was happy with it. (The skidpad was too small as built and it took a couple of rounds of changes to make it acceptable. That took a while.) The offending parking area was down in the lower left-hand corner of the map and forced us to move the loop around Worker Station 2 (WS-2) to the right as seen on the course map and make it smaller than designed.

The other major course change was to the stop box. As built, it extended past the vertical red dotted line on the map, which is there to show the presence of one of the two drainage dips that run across the entire lot. Those dips are significant constraints on course design because they can only be crossed in certain spots and in certain ways to avoid scraping front spoilers and splitters. The stop box as built ran over that dip and posed a real threat to the car under

hard braking. The entire stop box had to be moved back which also caused a rebuild of the approach to the stop box. All of this took quite a bit of time, but we got it done. Even so, the stop box was really too short and in general, I’d say we have a tendency to make our stop boxes too short. We need to do better than that in the future.

I was keeping a watchful eye on the radar and rain was still expected during the day. For that reason, we worked to move things along expeditiously and managed to get the first car off at 0918 against a scheduled 0930. We did 7 runs and yes, the rain rolled in to slow us down, so the last car crossed the line at 1442 with everyone getting 7 runs.

The rain was remarkably well timed. It rained heavily during most of heat 2, but heats 1 and 3 were completely dry. Go figure! It was still drizzling at the completion of run 5 for heat 2, but the standing water was gone by the 7th run and it was just wet. There were still some wet spots at the beginning of heat 3, but they quickly dried and the majority of heat 3 was driven with excellent conditions. In other words, heat 1 and 3 drivers had cherry conditions and heat 2 drivers were screwed. ;) The call to do 7 runs worked out perfectly. Only 1 heat was spoiled and the other 2 had very good conditions, so the rain (and it poured for the majority of heat 2!) affected the least number of drivers possible.

Guess who was driving in heat 2? Yup. Lucky me. And in a car with tires that are known to be pretty bad in wet conditions. For that reason, I don’t really know how the course drove under good conditions, having only experienced it somewhat when I was testing the course with Michael and when I’m testing, I’m looking at the course design for safety and navigational purposes rather than trying to go really fast. Oh, well. ;) I thought it was a fast, flowy course and in the end, the reports I heard seemed to indicate that the drivers really liked it. Good enough!

One thing I will say about the course is that the run up from WS-2 to WS-3 diagonally over the drainage dip was fine when I drove it in the dry during the test runs, but was a little dicey when I drove it in the wet conditions of heat 2 with the car getting kicked asymmetrically sideways quite drastically. (By that, I mean the car repointed itself impulsively to the left. Very disconcerting!) I’ll keep that in mind for the future. And when I say “wet conditions”, it was really wet during the pouring rain, as in rivers all over the course.

Actually, one other course comment comes to me. When sitting in grid and easing up to the start line, you accumulate a lot of water on the roof of the car.

When I accelerated off the line and went through those opening corners, I had water coming off the roof and pouring in the window. (Yes, we have to have the windows open for safety reasons when oncourse.) Take my word for it, that was more than a little disconcerting!

The rain caused the timing display board to operate sporadically during the second heat and it finally went down seemingly for good. I asked Justin Carney to take a look at it during heat 3 and, upon close examination, he discovered that the RJ-45 connector in the back of the timing display was badly corroded, so he sprayed it with DeOxit (I had just bought this product and brought it along for this purpose) and it cleaned up the corrosion very nicely, after which the display came back and worked great for the remainder of the event.

Sadly, this was the final AX for the inestimable Danny Kao before relocating. Danny flew out at 8:00 AM the next morning, returning to Taiwan. We chatted before he left and he had clearly been doing final whirlwind tours before leaving. Danny even took a selfie of me and him and I’m very disappointed that I didn’t think to ask him to send me a copy. He told me they had gotten home from concerts in NYC at 3:00 AM that morning (which was after I had gotten out of bed that morning, for pete’s sake!), so he power-napped before getting up to come to Aberdeen for his final autocross. Danny has been a huge asset to the local AX community for many years and, more specifically, to the CHS PCA AX program. What a character! The DMV (Del, MD, VA) AX community will miss Danny and, more to the point, I’ll miss him!

Interestingly, a couple of Aberdeen town cops showed up and watched for a while in the rain during heat 2. They were close to where I had my car gridded for heat 2, so I made it a point to go over and say hello. They mentioned that they really liked to see events like this where people can get their driving thrills in a legal, controlled setting rather than taking it out on the road. An interesting observation. I’ve wondered if it works that way, but of course have no way of knowing. The implication was that they had seen it make a difference and that they encourage people to drive in events like this to work it off. Huh.

Except for the timing display (which we got back up and running after it went down), all the hardware worked perfectly. Unlike AX#1 and 2, the wi-fi had a solid connection throughout and we had no trouble queueing cars (much to my relief), despite a long distance between the access point at the trailer and where the Starter was queueing cars on the tablet. We are coming off our mid-summer hiatus (there were no open dates for us at Ripken during July) with AX#4 next on the agenda, to be held on Saturday August 15th. AX#4 is filled, but there are still plenty of spots open for subsequent aurocrosses, so if you’d like to get out and legally tear around like your hair’s on fire at a CHS PCA AX, come on out and get your thrills with us.

Don’t forget our Taste of Autocross program! If you’d like to stick a toe in the water and see what autocross is really like, for a $5.00 fee (mandated by National) you can have all the rides you’d like in the passenger seat for hot laps with one of our Instructors. Those that try it certainly seem to have a great time. Come join us!

NEW LISTINGS

SPOTLIGHT

The 997.2 GT3 builds on its predecessor’s legacy with significant upgrades, making it even more faster and more refined. It features a larger 3.8-liter flat-six, delivering 435 hp, compared to the 997.1’s 3.6-liter engine with 415 hp, offering enhanced power and performance. the suspension and chassis were also improved, with Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) and the introduction of dynamic engine mounts, which increased agility and cornering precision. Externally, the 997.2 received refined aerodynamics, including a redesigned front fascia, larger air intakes, and a more prominent rear wing, all contributing to better cooling and increased downforce for superior track performance.

This 2010 911 GT3 came finished in Aqua Blue Metallic over a Black leather & Alcantara interior and showed 47,000 miles on the odometer. It looked to be in very nice condition with plenty of detailed photos in the gallery including paint meter readings and recent service records which included pinning the coolant lines and replacing the clutch, flywheel, and synchronizers. It was also nicely modified with StopTech brakes, and RSS engine mounts, lower control arms, tie rods, and more for a very nice 997.2 GT3.

Over the past twelve months we’ve seen seven 997.2 GT3s cross the block with an average price of $199,400, a low of $150,497, and a high of $270,000 set back in May by a 17,000-mile example. While our Spotlight Car may have had an extra 30k-miles, color, mods, and recent service set it apart. It sold at a final bid of $240,000.

The first 997.1 GT3 to sell online this year set a new eighteen-month high earlier this month at $232,000, besting the previous high of $185k, which was also that final sale back in 2025. This 2008 911 GT3 has the chance to keep the high-streak going as it shows 25,900 miles, 1k less than the $232k car. Other similarities are the Arctic Silver Metallic exterior and Black interior, but this one lacks the PCCB brakes the other had. PCCBs > mileage?

This 1967 911S Coupe came finished from the factory in Polo Red before being repainted Silver and purchased in the mid-’80s by artist Dr. Phyllis Yes, who hand-painted the exterior in this rather interesting design. Dubbed “Por She,” the 911 made its debut at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in NYC before traveling the country as an exhibit in 1985. The current owner purchased it directly from Dr. Yes in 2010 and later refurbished the car, with the good doctor herself touching up the paintwork. This one is 100% worth clicking through for the photos. I quite like it.

Birch Green should be on everybody’s radar after the 000 film about the color debuted recently. If you haven’t seen it, I highly suggest you check it out HERE. This 2018 911 GT3 6-Speed comes finished in the Paint-to-Sample hue over a Black leather and Alcantara interior and shows just 1,300 miles on the odometer. Other options include PCCB brakes, Front Axle Lift, Adaptive Sport Seats, and more for an original MSRP of $191,780. The current twelve-month high sits at $300,888 for a PTS Pure Green example sold in February of this year. This one should have no trouble topping that.
