WHAT INSPIRES YOUR GENEROSITY?

Trent Leyda’s clients give generously.

Many do so by using a donor-advised fund while others make carefully planned gifts from their estates. Many people call this giving back . . .

. We call it giving forward.

Since 2008, Indian River Community Foundation has carried out a mission of building a better community through donor-driven philanthropy by working closely with firms like SpirePoint Private Client to help clients make a meaningful charitable impact. Together, we have distributed more than $150 million in grants to make our community better, and we are committed to doing much more in the future.

Talk to your attorney, accountant, or financial advisor about your charitable giving and the difference you want to make in our community.

Whatever inspires you to give, Indian River Community Foundation can help.

Everyday Impacts

Afunny thing happened on my way to writing the introduction to this year’s edition of Time & Treasure: Guide to Better Giving—I heard a testimonial praising the work of two of our community’s most important nonprofit organizations in one of the most unlikely places—an Uber.

Just six weeks prior to this ride, my Uber driver and his fiancée had become parents for the first time. A healthy baby boy. When I asked how the pregnancy and delivery had gone, without prompting, he could not say enough good things about the help they received from Indian River Healthy Start Coalition’s prenatal and maternity programs, or the high-quality,

stress-free delivery at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital. Philanthropy made this couple’s experience possible.

These are just two of the more than 150 local nonprofit organizations listed in this year’s edition of Time & Treasure. Indian River Community Foundation and Vero Beach Magazine publish this annual resource, aptly subtitled Guide to Better Giving, to help you discover and learn more about charities in our community that need your volunteer and financial support.

It’s no surprise that the health and well-being of our community depend on philanthropy. Whatever inspires you to give or to get involved this year, I encourage you to be as generous as possible.

Giving & Receiving

I consider myself lucky to use this space for another year to talk about a big and very important topic—philanthropy—and it reminds me of something I heard regularly when I was growing up: “It’s better to give than to receive.” And when I think about giving, holidays and birthdays come to mind. No, it’s not Christmas or Hanukkah, it’s no one’s birthday, nor is it Mother’s Day. But really, every day and every season is the right time to give.

This publication, created in partnership with the Indian River Community Foundation, puts a spotlight on the good being done in our community every day by nonprofits and philanthropists. Each year, we like to start it off by introducing you to a few of the many nonprofit organizations that are getting it right.

Sunshine Physical Therapy has been serving our community in a big way—though in a small, unassuming building—in Vero Beach for more than 70 years. In

2024 alone, Sunshine’s therapists hosted more than 20,000 visits with patients needing help with all manner of therapy, and at every age.

Casey Lunceford and Crystal Bujol are realizing some longawaited dreams because of the generosity of our community. They’re focusing on our children, hoping to open the new Gifford Academy for Performing Arts, home to the Gifford Youth Orchestra, in 2026 after years of planning. Once finished, the cultural arts program is expected to serve 180 students at the new center on 45th Street.

Our last feature focuses on our annual visitors to the beach, just not the two-legged kind. Coastal Connections is all about educating us on how to protect the environment that sea turtles need to thrive in our local waters. Celeste McWilliams is heading that effort as the nonprofit’s sea turtle programs coordinator, and she has some newly funded STEM tools up her sleeve that will help

engage our students in the fight for our turtles.

All this just shows that there’s something for everyone to engage in or give to when looking for a nonprofit to support. To repeat an oft-used quote by Anne Frank, “No one has ever become poor by giving.”

The Future IS NOW

A long-held dream is coming true for the Gifford Youth Orchestra

It’s been more than a few years since Gifford Youth Orchestra founder and artistic director Crystal Bujol voiced her vision of a performing arts academy in Gifford. It would have a recording studio equipped with the latest technology, soundproof practice rooms, and an expansive stage where orchestra and youth choir performances, piano recitals, plays, and public speaking events would play to a full house.

Bujol’s vision is about to be realized on 45th Street, where, a few block s west of Gifford Middle School and the Gifford Historical Museum and Cultural Center, a sign announces the soon-to-open Gifford

Academy for Performing Arts, home of the Gifford Youth Orchestra.

It may have taken a little longer than Bujol had hoped, but as GYO executive director Casey Lunceford points out, the end result will be worth the wait. It just took the right pieces to fall into place at the right time.

“We were blessed when a woman in Gifford who had passed away left us a piece of property, which we sold for $100,000,” Lunceford explains enthusiastically. “Then we received an initial $1,000,000 toward our goal of $3,000,000, so we had seed money, and we started looking around at available properties around us while

we gathered more gifts and donations.”

From the beginning, our game plan has been simple: get permits approved in May, break ground in July, put up the thermometer, meet our financial goal, and have a thank-you party in December when we open the building without any debt.”

It’s been 22 years since Bujol founded the GYO, a nonprofit cultural arts program that provides music education and training in the cultural and performing arts for underserved youth aged 3 through 18 from Gifford and surrounding communities.

What began with 15 eager pupils following GYO’s “more music, more melodies, more better tomorrows” mantra now boasts just over 100, and once the new performing arts

building opens, there will be room for many more.

That’s the idea, and Lunceford, who has a master’s degree in musical directing, is the perfect person to oversee the program’s expansion.

“I had just retired after 25 years with Indian River State College and was looking to get back to my music roots when I spied an ad for a Gifford Youth Orchestra executive director. I was curious so I reached out, we had a meeting, and here I am.”

That was three years ago, and Lunceford, affectionately known as “Mr. Casey,” couldn’t be happier—or busier—especially when it comes to making sure the Gifford Academy for

Performing Arts becomes a reality.

Drawing on a professional relationship formed while he was at IRSC, Lunceford contacted architect Tony Donadio, a partner with the Spiezle Group, who gives a thumbnail description of what to look forward to.

“The building fronts on 45th Street, and the open lobby, which is all glass and welcoming, will be used for community activities,” Donadio explains. “ Th ere’s an office for the director, a stage, and the rest is basically made up of practice rooms. We’re working with the Wenger Corporation, a firm out of Minneapolis. Their modular prefab rooms are all pitch-perfect and can be resized and/or relocated as future

program needs grow, saving us months in construction time and cost.

“Larry Franklin Construction is building the academy, and it’s a good fit, as Larry was born and raised in Vero Beach, and his company has a proven track record.”

As the academy’s walls go up and the building takes shape, Lunceford can’t help but think about the many GYO graduates who are examples of the “each one, reach one, teach one” philosophy that encourages students to use their musical talent and knowledge to educate and inspire others.

“Marissa Rollins is a perfect example of what we call the ‘ripple effect,’” says Lunceford. “After graduating from the University of South Florida summa cum laude, she went on to teach violin to as many as 600 students at Lincoln Elementary in Plant City. Now that’s giving back, and once our new Academy of Performing Arts opens its doors, we’ll be able to teach and reach even more.” ◆

Walking on Sunshine

This nonprofit clinic provides physical, occupational, speech, and sensory therapy for outpatients of all ages and financial means

Karl Zimmermann remembers having heard about Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic, but he had no idea what went on inside the modest yellow (now burnt-orange-colored) building on 17th Avenue. Thanks to a friend who suggested he take a look, he found out. The retired commercial Realtor has been a client and advocate ever since.

“I had tried other physical therapy providers who were recommended by my doctors, but I wasn’t happy with the results,” says Zimmermann. “It was different at Sunshine. The staff is qualified and caring, and they work together as a team. They make you feel welcome,

starting at the sign-in desk, where you’re greeted with a smile.” He continues to have regular therapy sessions for a hereditary condition, and when asked to serve on the board of directors, he didn’t hesitate to say yes.

The clinic, originally called the Sunshine Center of Indian River County, was established 72 years ago, thanks to a handful of Vero’s founding families who identified a community need and did something about it. An approved Medicare facility, the nonprofit accepts major insurances, including Medicaid and workers’ compensation. It also accepts uninsured patients and, as a result, is

dependent on fees for service, donations, and endowments to fund operations.

In a perfect world, that would cover expenses. It doesn’t.

That’s why executive director Ginny Blossom likens the clinic to a unicorn:

“The provider that accepts a large number of Medicaid patients and makes it work is much like the fabled unicorn; there are rumors they exist but no one has actually seen them,” she muses.

“Sunshine provides a critical service, but it isn’t sustainable on its own,” she adds. “We survive only through the generous support of the community and philanthropists. Our largest funder is the Indian River County

A myriad of old photos and newspaper articles hang on the walls, documenting the creation and growth of the center through more than 70 years of history.

taxpayer, who through funding from the Indian River Hospital District and the Children’s Services Advisory Council of Indian River County, supports the work we do.”

Last year, Sunshine logged over 20,000 visits. More than 8,000 were for Medicaid clients who received free or partially free services, costing just over $850,000. As demand for services and the cost of doing business increases, that number is expected to be even higher this year.

As Blossom explains, “Not only has the number of clients increased, our therapy team has grown from 15 to 22 individuals, and our services have expanded as well. In the past year, we’ve added pelvic floor therapy, a dedicated adult occupational therapy team, and reopened our Assisted Fitness program for seniors.

“We’ve also partnered with Piece of the Puzzle Behavior Analysis to support our physical, occupational, and speech therapies in the Pediatric

Department, and in March we added acupuncture and pain management to our roster of services.”

Space is squeaky tight, which has prompted the board of directors to explore offering therapy services offsite, similar to what is being done with The Arc of Indian River County.

Blossom’s face lights up when she says, “We’re in discussion with TCCH [Treasure Coast Community Health] about offering a satellite clinic in their new Pediatric Clinic on Oslo Road when construction is completed. It’s a wonderful opportunity and so much needed.

“Of our Medicaid clients, over 80 percent were children, with 95 percent having autism and or other special needs. School readiness is a core focus of our integrated, patient-centric approach for ages zero to 6. A recent national statistic revealed that 42 percent of children under the age of 5 who received early intervention services prior to entering school would never need in-school therapy service.”

The Sadlek Sensorium is a calming space for children to learn how to process the busy world around them.
Sunshine Physical Therapy started as a small nonprofit over 70 years ago, growing to a well-respected provider hosting more than 20,000 patient visits per year.

And there’s more. Sunshine plans to add a specialized therapy program for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions by the end of the year, or early next, as well as lymphedema therapy, both of which Blossom notes are desperately needed and require advanced certification.

All of this is good news for those seeking physical therapy services. As former local talk show host and happy client Marcia Littlejohn says, “Nothing could be more satisfying when you have aches and pains than the PT that Sunshine Therapy provides.”

Upon touring Sunshine’s facility in May, Mayor John Cotugno echoed Littlejohn’s sentiments: “You have a wonderful facility and provide services that our community truly needs. I cannot believe you began in 1953 and remain the best kept secret on the Treasure Coast.”

The founding families would agree. ◆

Coastal Connections champions sea turtle survival and offers programs that inform and inspire

Celeste McWilliams is one busy lady. As sea turtle programs coordinator for Coastal Connections, she leads turtle walks at night and introduces elementary school children to the world of loggerheads and the importance of marine conservation during the day. It’s obvious that McWilliams, who has been with the environmental nonprofit since it was founded eight years ago, loves what she does, and it shows, especially when she talks about the elementary school programs.

“We started our STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) career-based educational programs for grades K through five in 2021, using a mix of interactive games and activities that mimic real-world scientific activities,” she explains.

“For example, when we did our first pre-K program, instead of playing ‘Simon says …,’ we played ‘Sea turtle says ... crawl like a loggerhead,’ and the little ones would get down on the floor and start moving their arms and legs. When we talked about anatomy and life cycles, they’d curl up in a ball, pretending to be baby turtles inside an egg, and when they were told it was time to hatch, they’d jump

up and shout, ‘I popped!’ They were so excited!” McWilliams’ eyes light up as she mimics the children’s motion.

“In grades K and one, we do Simply Sea Turtles, which is a basic introduction to sea turtles, and in second grade it’s Sea Turtle Biologist in Training. There are so many ways to tie this into a future career. While there might only be a handful of stu-

dents who would eventually be interested in becoming a biologist, even if they don’t choose to go into the field, the goal is to have students think outside the box about ways they can help protect and preserve our local natural resources.”

Another goal is to promote literacy. Coastal Connections’ involvement with The Learning Alliance Moonshot Moment

began last year with both in-school and after-school programs, and early this year the partnership was expanded to include a multiple-week session for grades K through four at Vero Beach Elementary. This past May, Coastal Connections received $20,000 from the Indian River Community Foundation’s Community Enrichment Fund to support the grade-

appropriate STEM programs, all designed to align with Florida Department of Education standards.

As McWilliams points out, “Take our Survive and Thrive program for grades three and four, where students learn about animal and plant adaptations necessary for sea turtles to survive on our

ever-changing planet. While playing the game on a digital board in a classroom, or at an outdoor course if the school is doing the program on a field trip, students draw random cards that include a situation or an adaptation that affects sea turtles. They not only learn new vocabulary words and what they mean, they become aware of current topics like global warming and how they can actively play a part in making human impacts more positive.”

In 2021, 67 students participated in Coastal Connections STEM programs; so far this year the number is close to 2,000, and it is expected to be higher by the end of December, as plans include increasing outreach to high school students with additional programs. Also, retrofitting the sea turtle rescue van will allow it to be used as a mobile learning resource.

All of this excites McWilliams. While growing up in landlocked Pennsylvania, she was drawn to the ocean without knowing why. What she did know

was that she couldn’t wait for summer, when she spent a few weeks with an uncle who lived in South Florida near the water.

When she grew up and had a family, there was no question where she would be living and what she would be doing. “My daughter Cori grew up around the water and was connected with the environment at a young age. I wanted other kids to have the life we were able to provide for her.”

“I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to see students standing in the water, smiling as they knead their toes in the sand like little kittens,” McWilliams says; “or the best is when you have a 10-year-old student run up, grab and hug you because he’d never seen the ocean before, even though he lives less than a mile away. There’s no reason a kid in Florida shouldn’t be thoroughly knowledgeable about the environment and conservation. It’s magical!” ◆

Shannon participated in this unforgettable day alongside several of her friends from The Arc of Indian River County, where she has the opportunity to be part of a community that enriches the lives of all who are involved.

A few years ago, without the support of The Arc, this exciting experience would not have been

possible for Shannon, as her medical history included seizures and atrophied muscles.

Living in an Arc residential home, Shannon received physical and occupational therapy, and staff of both the day and residential programs were trained to work with her specific needs. Over time, she became medically and physically stable.

Thus, when the time came for The Arc of Florida’s second annual Advocacy Days, held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Shannon was up for the trip, thanks to the trained and experienced local Arc staff members who prepared and accompanied her.

However, due to his fragile health, he required additional support; so HALO staff turned to their community of friends for help in purchasing a kitten incubator.

INDIAN RIVER LAND TRUST

TONI ROBINSON WATERFRONT TRAIL

Nonprofit organizations have many types of success stories, all of which benefit the community. When the Land Trust has a success, everyone can experience it directly.

Established in 2013, the Toni Robinson Waterfront Trail consists of a 1-mile trail, sandy Florida scrub, a boardwalk through a serene mangrove forest, and sweeping views of the Indian River Lagoon.

Always a local treasure, the trail has reached new heights over the past year. Thanks to a generous gift from the Ritzel family, it now offers more than 40 interpretive signs about the property’s native plants and animals; other additions include bird

and bat boxes as well as an osprey nesting platform.

Hundreds of visitors of all ages explore the trail each month, connecting with nature and learning about the habitats.

Through the community’s generosity, the Land Trust was able to acquire an additional 61 acres adjacent to the Toni Robinson preserve, establishing 157 contiguous acres of protected lagoonfront land in a rapidly developing area of the county.

The trailhead is located on 79th Street, just east of U.S. 1, about a mile south of the Wabasso Causeway. This beautiful conservation property is open each day, free of charge, from dawn until dusk.

THE LEARNING ALLIANCE

SASHA

When Sasha arrived at Beachland Elementary School as a second grader, she faced an uphill battle. She was struggling not only with literacy but also with confidence. Then she began receiving individualized instruction, encouragement, and enrichment through The Learning Alliance’s Moonshot Academy program.

“Sasha is a daydreamer,” says her father, Doug. “The Moonshot Academy was able to help her stay focused.”

By April, Sasha’s reading percentile had climbed exponentially. She even discovered a love for reading! She devoured The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, a book written at a fifth-grade level, and was so inspired by the story that she built a model robot during an activity led by the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

Sasha’s reading breakthrough has even boosted her performance in other classes. By way of example, Doug points out her improvement in math word problems.

“Her teachers have all commented on how hard she has worked and how this has helped her endurance with projects and schoolwork as her reading confidence has increased,” Doug says. “I believe a large component, besides her two really awesome teachers at school, is the educational curriculum of Moonshot.”

INDIAN RIVER HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

WILLIE

A proud native of Vero Beach, Willie faced a heartbreaking turning point when he lost the only home he had ever known. After experiencing the passing of his beloved mother as well as estrangement from his son, he was left with no choice but to move into Camp Haven, an all-male shelter. Willie leaned into his faith, praying daily for guidance and clinging to the belief that God would lead him forward.

Wanting desperately to establish a home base, Willie learned about Indian River Habitat for Humanity through an associate. After talking with Habitat employees, he applied and was accepted into the Homebuyer program—a development that left him shocked at how God works.

“I can’t believe how nice I was treated,” Willie reports enthusiastically; “plus I improved my finances, and I made wonderful new friends. I never experienced that before until Habitat came into my life.”

Willie completed his sweat equity hours and program requirements, and he is very grateful for all

that he learned through the Habitat process. Moving into his new home has brought Willie a peace and comfort that he is now eager to share with his loved ones.

Jack has always been independent, but now, at 93, vision issues have made daily life more challenging for him. Unable to drive, he relies on the kindness of friends and neighbors who help him run errands. But still, there are limits.

That’s where SRA’s Meals on Wheels comes in; he doesn’t know what he would do without the volunteers who bring him nutritious food each day. “I depend on them heavily,” he says.

And the meals are just part of the story. Meals on Wheels drivers are also checking in with SRA clients and providing crucial human contact that may be lacking in their lives. While virtual church meetings help Jack stay involved during the week, they are no substitute for that friendly face at his door each day.

“They’ve been good to me,” Jack says. “I love all the volunteers.”

HARPER*

The young people who find themselves on the doorstep of Hibiscus Village have suffered abuse and/or neglect that no child should have to endure. When 14-year-old Harper arrived, she was completely nonverbal, relying on a whiteboard and markers to communicate. Even the simplest of interactions was a challenge.

Harper was assigned a mental health therapist, and the Hibiscus team applied compassion and patience as they worked with her. Slowly, she began to open up and develop stronger communication skills. She responded well to therapy.

A key part of Harper’s healing was her participation in the Career Pathways to Independence Program, which focuses on academic achievement, career readiness, and the development of life skills. In the Graphic Design Impact Center, she found a passion and talent for creativity, which in turn boosted her self-confidence.

Harper’s months at Hibiscus were transformative. Eventually,

she was placed in a pre-adoptive home that soon became her “forever family.” The next time she appeared on the doorstep of the village, on the eve of her high school graduation, it was to thank those who had guided and supported her through some of the toughest moments of her young life.

EMMA, JACOB, AND CHAD*

For 15 months, Emma, Jacob, Chad, and their parents lived in a tent in the woods, facing daily struggles to meet even their most basic needs. Life was uncertain, unsafe, and exhausting.

The family finally experienced a turning point when the Homeless Children’s Foundation stepped in. HCF brought a lifeline that included enrichment programs for the children, offering relief from spending long hours in the tent. The organization also provided case management for the parents and connected the family to essential services.

Through HCF, Emma was enrolled in after-school programs, including one that allowed her to learn to swim. Jacob completed a workforce training program and became employed immediately upon graduating from high school in May. HCF also helped the siblings’ father secure employment.

Collectively, these steps amounted to the life-changing moment the family secured a permanent home. With HCF’s involvement, this family now has hope, opportunity, and a path toward long-term stability.

SPECIAL EQUESTRIANS OF THE TREASURE COAST

At Special Equestrians, lives are transformed daily through the powerful bond between horses and humans.

An excellent example of this bond occurred when J.J., an active but nonverbal little boy with developmental and behavioral challenges, first visited Special Equestrians. He was instantly attracted to the horses. Riding had a calming effect on him, improving his ability to focus. Staff members’ jaws dropped when they heard J.J. utter his first word: “Squeeze.” It was the name of his horse!

For children and adults with disabilities, adaptive riding and equine-assisted services can initiate a journey of growth and self-discovery. Guided by Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors, students like J.J. build strength, confidence, and independence one day at a time. J.J.’s interaction with Squeeze will no doubt lead to many more productive connections in his life.

Success Stories

VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

RYAN SCHATTINGER

When 32-year-old Ryan Schattinger and his parents moved to Vero Beach last year, his mother, Darci, immediately set about seeking art programs for Ryan. He already had more than 15 years of instruction under his belt, so art had become an important part of his life.

Ryan soon found his place in Vero Beach Museum of Art’s A+Art program, a free class geared toward neurodiverse teens and young adults. Offered weekly during the school year, the classes are designed to

cultivate creativity, foster social interaction, and build confidence.

“A+Art offers engagement with museum galleries, professional art instruction, and high-quality materials,” says Darci.

Darci accompanies Ryan to A+Art classes to watch him grow and express himself through different media. She says the topics, projects, and tours are enlightening.

She adds, “It’s not just an art class—it’s a full-on visual and tactile experience.”

CROSSOVER MISSION

ALMANDO CYRIUS

“Keep working, keep grinding, and you’ll get what you want”—pragmatic advice from a young man who has learned the value of hard work.

Having scored just one point in his entire sixth-grade basketball season, Almando entered seventh grade with something to prove. That’s when he began his journey with Crossover Mission. Dedicating himself with laser focus, Almando improved steadily and, as an eighth grader, became his team’s top scorer.

He went on to play basketball all four years at Vero Beach High School, while holding down part-time restaurant and retail jobs. Almando credits the mentorship of Crossover cofounder Antoine Jennings and the guidance of Diane Bainter of the organization’s College & Career Readiness program with helping him graduate and earn admission to the historic King University in Tennessee, where he played guard for two years.

Almando’s Crossover journey has now come full circle: he has returned to the nonprofit, where he holds a full-time position as a coach’s assistant and is thriving as a mentor. “I take pride in helping others along the path I went through,” he says, “encouraging them to learn from their mistakes and showing them all the good things I’ve done so far in my life.” ◆

Across our community, families face unrelenting challenges. Rising costs, economic strain, and unpredictable crises push many to the brink. But when the unexpected strikes, it’s more than just an inconvenience — it can be devastating.

That’s why United Way is always here — before, during, and after a crisis — connecting more than 1 in 4 people in our community with the support they need. We mobilize resources, build resilience, and make sure no one falls through the cracks. Your gift isn’t just charity. It’s an investment in tomorrow.
