Is Your Investment Strategy Prepared for a Sea Change? or 40 years, U.S. stock market investors have been sailing downwind. There have only been two severe storms: 2000-02 and 2007-08. As a result, investors have grown used to smooth sailing. But what if the wind shifts, causing a sea change in markets? In hindsight, the winds of U.S. prosperity are easy to see. Interest rates dropped from 16% in 1981 to near 0% by 2008 and then remained ultra-low for a decade. During this time, a large prime-age workforce filled the economic sails. Above all, when storms threatened markets, U.S. policymakers grew the money supply and piled on U.S. Treasury debt to steady the course.

Today, the noted conditions supporting the last 40 years have shifted, all while the S&P 500 sits near a record-high valuation with a recordlow dividend yield. To us, the next decade looks like upwind sailing that requires a different investment strategy. Is your investment strategy prepared for a sea change in markets? In our research pieces – A Sea Change, Dividends Ahoy!, Time to Get Real, and Rethinking Gold – we present the case for changing investment strategy. To learn more about our thoughts and investment strategy, visit spectrainvestment.com.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Simply THE BEST

STEVEN MARTINE

T

hey say everyone has an opinion. This month, we’ve turned tens of thousands of them (all submitted by our readers) into a magazine issue. To that end, I present the third annual Best Of Stuart. In this month’s pages, you’ll find hundreds of reader-selected winners and runners up (plus my editor’s picks)—all representing the very best of the Treasure Coast. But this issue is about more than rankings and bragging rights. It’s a love letter to the restaurants, shops, businesses, professionals, and local personalities that make our community one of a kind. Better yet, it’s chosen by the people who know it best: our readers. So thank you. Thank you to each of you who nominated your favorites, rallied your friends to vote by the thousands, and passionately defended why your pizza, hairstylist, pediatrician, or happy hour (and beyond) deserved the top spot. (And trust me, some of these categories got...competitive.) My advice? Don’t just flip through this issue—put it to work. Save it. Dog-ear the pages. Circle the restaurants you’ve been meaning to try. Mark up the margins. Book that appointment you’ve been putting off, stop into that bakery you keep driving past, or plan the weekend adventure you’ve been talking about. ( Just don’t blame me when your list of places to check out suddenly gets a whole lot longer.) Congratulations to this year’s winners and runners up. You’ve earned bragging rights for the next 12 months. And if your favorite didn’t take home the top prize this year, take heart. I can promise we’ll be asking for your opinion again next year. Enjoy,

AIR APPARENT People think being editor in chief is glamorous, but sometimes the job simply requires being full of enough hot air to blow up balloons for a cover concept you’ve been dreaming up for the Best Of Stuart issue. To bring that dream to life, art director Craig Cottrell, photographer Ian Jacob, and I filled Ian’s studio with a variety of metallic balloons and plenty of confetti. The result is this month’s bespoke cover—and a wildly fun collaboration among creatives willing to experiment, make a mess, and see what floated.

elcome to the Best Of Stuart issue! This is one of the issues we look forward to most each year—a celebration of the businesses and professionals that help make the Treasure Coast such a wonderful place to live. Nominated and voted on by our readers, this year’s winners and finalists include longtime local favorites as well as newer names that are quickly making their mark. Throughout the issue, you’ll find standouts in dining, shopping, healthcare, wellness, home services, recreation, and more. Each finalist has earned a loyal following by delivering great experiences, building strong relationships, and consistently serving our community. Putting this special issue together is one of the biggest projects our team takes on each year. Our editor in chief, Kristen, our art director, Craig, and the entire Stuart Magazine team spend months managing web responses, gathering information, coordinating photography, writing, designing, and checking every detail. I am always proud to see their passion and dedication come together in these pages. To all of this year’s winners and finalists, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. The work you do strengthens our local business community and gives residents and visitors so many reasons to enjoy life on the Treasure Coast. Also in this issue, you’ll find our Home Resource Guide, our Luxury Homes real estate section, and our Local Dining Guide. If you own a business and would like to be included in one of these sections in a future issue, please contact me for more information. Thank you to our readers, advertisers, and community partners for continuing to support Stuart Magazine and allowing us to share the stories, people, and places that make this one of Florida’s most amazing places to call home. On this warm Saturday afternoon, they’ve invited the association’s members to the Honey House to show off the expansion and improvements to the kosher-certified commercial food kitchen accented with beeinspired charm. “What I have is very unique,” Malnove explains, noting that there are a few large-scale beekeeping operations in Palm Beach County and a couple of honey-packers—but very few

In return, the environment provides honey with a flavor profile that’s completely unique to your location. “Even when [clubs] are only a couple of miles apart, everyone’s honey is just a little bit different because of their own microclimate,”

Malnove explains. Honey flavors change seasonally as different species of plants flower and bloom throughout the year. Back at the Honey House, Malnove processes honey harvests for her clients as well as local small-scale beekeepers. One machine extracts honey from hive frames, another bottles it, and a third prints labels. In 2020, while attending the International Beekeepers Conference in Montreal, Malnove discovered a piece of equipment that solves a common problem with many Florida honey varieties, which tend to crystallize into a texture some consumers find less appealing. The machine alters this crystal structure, creating a smooth, spreadable product. Inspired by the discovery, Malnove and Salopek launched the Palm Beach Creamed Honey Company, offering creamed honey and Bee10 Coffee & Hot Chocolate— a honey-infused blend that transforms into a sweet beverage by adding hot water. Both products are available online and at select Fresh Market locations. But for Malnove, the business has always been about more than honey—it’s about helping people better understand the vital role honeybees play in our lives. “Beekeeping connects people to the environment,” she says. “It also connects people to their community in a way they’ve never been connected before.” (sierrasbees.com) ❖ SEP T EM B ER 2 0 2 6

SECOND ACT Jupiter’s Holly Dawn Davidson makes her acting comeback in a new film produced by Mark Wahlberg and Snoop Dogg

W

hen Holly Dawn Davidson got the call that Oscarnominated director Steve Cantor wanted her to audition for his new documentary Four Down, she was ready. “I was in character… so much so that I got emotional at some of the questions they asked me,” says Davidson. Four Down chronicles the real-life story of the boat accident that claimed the lives of NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith. plus a third man 50 miles off the coast of Clearwater, Florida in 2009. Davidson plays Marcia Schuyler, the mother of Nick Schuyler, the sole survivor. Her emotional audition struck just the right chord for Cantor —as well as Mark Wahlberg and Snoop Dogg who are producers of the film. The most poignant affirmation of her portrayal came from Marcia Schuyler herself. “I was sitting in front of Marcia at the premiere at the Sunscreen Film Festival in Tampa,” says Davidson. “She came up to me and was so grateful I was able to portray her the way she was.” Four Down is slated for widespread release in January 2027. The role is a comeback of sorts for Davidson, who acted when she was younger but took a 19-year break to raise her twin sons. Originally from Texas, Davidson landed roles in 1980s films including Pancho Barnes with Valerie Bertinelli and the romantic comedy It Takes Two. She was also cast in the popular TV show Dallas. When she and her husband moved to Jupiter in 2004, Davidson left acting behind to focus on her family. A few years ago, she got the bug. “I Goo-

gled ‘how do I get back into acting’” says Davidson. “I found a woman in Los Angeles who was in the business, watched her YouTube videos, got a headshot and signed up for casting websites.” After countless auditions for many different roles, Davidson finally landed the role in Four Down. Davidson can also be seen in the Disney+ documentary series Something Bit Me and crime drama The Advocate streaming on Amazon Prime. Davidson’s latest project is one close to her heart. “I had been wanting to write

about my experience with IVF (in vitro fertilization),” she says. “It is such an isolating experience. Unless you are going through it, you don’t know how it feels.” She shared her story and her insights in a book draft titled Infertility—Ain’t it a Bitch? that she is now shopping to agents. “It’s almost like a Chicken Soup for the Soul book. The chapters are funny. It’s a tongue-in-cheek look at infertility.” Davidson hopes the book will eventually help women experiencing infertility feel like they are not alone. “Every actor is told to write your own story,” she says. “This is mine.” ❖

erri Paizzi already has her retirement planned. “When I retire, I’m going back to being a hostess,” says Paizzi. “I want to be that old lady at the door greeting people and asking how the grandkids are doing.” For Paizzi, the owner of Flavor South Florida, the restaurant industry has been her passion since her days working in a New York deli at the age of 14. Today the Hobe Sound resident champions local restaurants every September through her Flavor South Florida program. The official restaurant month for Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast, Flavor South Florida spans 122 miles with more than 100 participating restaurants. Each restaurant features a threecourse menu at a special price. “This is the month where you are going to get the best dining deals at the best restaurants,” says Paizzi. “The incentive is to get the locals out dining and supporting the restaurants in their slowest month of the year.” Paizzi recently launched a new podcast called Forking Around with Flavor South Florida to talk about the restaurant business from the inside out. It features an in-depth look at the industry through the voices of chefs, owners, influencers, and businesspeople. “I want to know how they got here and why did they get here?” says Paizzi. “It’s 100 hours a week on your feet and people are yelling at you. It’s really high pressure to work in the industry.” Still, part of Paizzi yearns to be back at the hostess stand. “I remember doing 500 dinners on a Saturday night. When people get hungry,

they get really mean and you have to keep smiling. I thrive in that. I just love it,” she laughs. (flavorsouthflorida.com) Q: Do you cook?

A: I’m a great cook! I love making Italian food and fish dishes. My problem is that I am so used to eating at restaurants that I now plate things to look pretty at my own home. I can’t keep it simple.

Q: What’s the most exotic food you have eaten?

A: I was at this tequila tasting where they had you shoot the tequila and chase it with a fried cricket. It tasted like a potato chip. Q: What’s your go-to cocktail?

A: I love martinis that are creative and different. The Peas & Thank You Martini at The Butcher’s Club is my current favorite.

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Kerri Paizzi, founder of Flavor South Florida; Octopus carpaccio at Giordi in Stuart; RemBar’s signature mozzarella skewers in Jupiter

Q: What’s missing from the local food scene?

A: Martin County needs more good bagel stores. Everyone keeps telling me to open one. Q: Care to share your top three hidden gems?

A: Rembar is a little wine bar in Jupiter, and their food is shockingly fantastic. I am obsessed with Giordi in Stuart. Michelin should have given them a star. PGA National is a hidden gem of really good food. During the summer, I do a staycation with my son and eat at Sushi by Bou, Honeybelle, and The Butcher’s Club. I adore all three of those restaurants. ❖

PROTEIN POWER

Stuart dietician Tony Castillo breaks down the protein craze into bite-sized pieces BY VALERIE STAGGS

W

alk your local grocery store aisles and you’ll see the word protein emblazoned on everything from Cheerios to ice cream. The push for more protein is everywhere, but understanding the power of protein is key to a healthy diet, says Tony Castillo, owner of Nutrition for Performance in Stuart. Castillo, who holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Florida International University, spent the early part of his career as a sports dietician for Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays. Today, he uses his experience working with athletes to help clients understand how protein contributes to healthy, strong bodies. “Protein is what helps us build and keep muscle,” says Castillo. “I think of protein like Legos. You need 20 Legos in order for your body to keep muscle.” Those Legos are the amino acids found in protein-rich foods like meat, poultry, eggs, or plant proteins like quinoa and edamame. Castillo has an easy reference point for protein portion size: “You should be eating about a palm size of protein every three to four hours,” he says. “We have this light switch in our body that turns off. People who eat 20 to 30 grams of protein every three to four hours

SNACK PACK

Low Fat Mozzarella Sticks “Any brand is good. They are an easy protein snack on the go.”

Castillo says these five portable protein favorites work as hard as you do, whether you’re at home or on-the-go.

Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame “This is a great crunchy protein snack, especially for vegans.”

28

keep that light switch on which helps us build or keep our muscle.” The goal is to aim for 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of your body weight every day; but not all protein is created equal. “You should be eating whole foods first like lean meat and salmon,” says Castillo. “A lot of protein chips or protein bars are typically really high in fat and don’t stave off hunger.” Opting for a chicken breast, a small apple, and a handful of nuts gives you the same nutritional mix as a protein bar and will keep you full longer. Castillo recommends easy options for folks on the go. “Grab a yogurt or a glass of milk,” he says. “Beef jerky or crunchy edamame is easy to throw in a bag. Cottage cheese is also having a moment right now.” Getting the right proteins into your diet leads to many positive effects. “More muscle leads to a longer life,” says Castillo. “You’ll look better, feel better, have more energy, and you’ll see the changes in the mirror that you’re looking for.” (nutritionfp.com) ❖

Chobani or Oikos Greek Yogurt “They are a good protein source and they are mainstream—you can find them at a grocery store, an airport, or a gas station.”

Chomps Beef Sticks “These sticks have a good amount of protein and not a lot of ingredients.”

Fair Life Core Power Protein Shakes “These food-based shakes are shelf-stable so you can bring them with you, and you don’t have to keep them cold.”

What’s one food trend you love and one you’re ready to leave behind? I love seeing the continued focus on sourcing locally. Knowing your farmers, fishermen, and producers creates stronger communities and better food. One trend I’d happily leave behind is cooking for Instagram instead of flavor. Presentation matters, but taste should always come first. I want our food to comfort people, nourish them, and create memories. If it happens to photograph beautifully too, that’s a bonus. If anyone was destined to run an Italian restaurant, it was Francesca Di Fede. Growing up, she says, she was practically raised among pizza boxes, joking that “sauce runs in my veins.” Her father, Dominic Di Fede, opened La Forchetta in Stuart in 2009 after decades in the pizza business, building the family restaurant around authentic Italian recipes and warm hospitality. When Dominic passed away in 2020, Francesca stepped into the leadership role, determined to honor his legacy while carrying the restaurant into the future. Many of the menu’s signature dishes remain family traditions, including the Penne di Pappa—her father’s favorite, originally served at her parents’ wedding—and the beloved Chicken Luca, which she insists best represents what La Forchetta is all about. “I always say he lives in these walls,” Francesca says of her father. “He gives me the strength every day to continue on.” (laforchetta.net) —K.D.L.

Winner, Best Gardening Store Ian Pinder has plant life in his roots. A third-generation member of the family behind Pinder’s Nursery, he manages production, overseeing the thousands of plants grown on-site before they reach the retail garden center. His advice for home gardeners is the same principle that guides his own work: Be observant. “Spend time really looking at your plants, not just glancing at them,” he says. “Pay attention to new growth, leaf color, moisture, insects, weather, and any recent changes in the landscape.” Pinder urges gardeners to consider the full picture. “Plants are constantly giving us clues,” he says. “The more observant you become, the better gardener you’ll be.” (pindersnursery.com) —K.D.L

Q&A

Karina Premerlani OWNER, KAYCEE’S BRIDAL

Winner, Best Bridal Boutique What’s the biggest mistake brides make when shopping for a wedding dress? Waiting too long to shop. It takes several months to receive special order dresses, and you’ll want to have a few months for alterations as well. We recommend shopping 9-12 months ahead of your wedding to find the perfect dress. What’s one thing brides worry about that they really shouldn’t? Other peoples’ opinions of which dress you should choose. Don’t let anyone talk you out of a dress that you truly love and feel beautiful in. How do you know when you’ve found the dress? Once you find the dress you won’t want to take it off! Not all brides cry or have an overwhelmingly emotional moment. You will feel confident, beautiful and picture yourself walking down the aisle in that dress. (kayceesbridal.com) —K.D.L.

Dr. Elizabeth Feldman PEDIATRICIAN, CLEVELAND CLINIC JENSEN BEACH Winner, Best Pediatrician How do you know when it’s time to call the pediatrician? Trust your instincts — if something doesn’t seem right, call. Always contact your pediatrician for: fever in infants younger than 3 months, significant behavior changes, fever higher than 104 degrees F in any child, or fever lasting more than 48–72 hours without improvement. What can parents do to keep their kids healthy year-round? Stay current on well-child visits and immunizations. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, eats mostly whole foods, stays hydrated, and spends time outside. What key piece of advice would you offer every new parent? Consistency matters more than perfection. Practice what you preach—children are observational learners who mirror what adults do and say. Known for interiors that meld casual elegance with an easyto-live-with sensibility, Isabelle Formigé Miller of European Design Interiors in Stuart curated an elevated mise-en-scène for toast-worthy spreads with family and friends. “The client has refined taste but wanted a lighter feel than her primary home in Maryland,” says Miller, who incorporated the clients’ treasured dining table and chairs, working with a custom

furniture maker to expand the piece with an oval glass top banded in wood trim to accommodate more guests. To better suit the room’s substantial verticality, Miller also had the chair backs extended by five inches and recovered in Schumacher fabric with trim color-matched to the rug in a nod to Florida’s year-round verdancy. They enlisted Jim Cherry of Palm City-based Cherry Luxury Homes to transform it into a nearly 7,500-square-foot retreat for themselves, their two young sons, and two dogs. Their vision called for an open, easily navigable floor plan whose principal gathering spaces could transition seamlessly to convivial entertaining. Dedicated quarters for their children and a generously proportioned ground-floor primary suite were also essential. With its prized southern exposure, the reimagined two-story residence would encompass five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, formal living and dining rooms, a family room, wine cellar, mudroom, laundry room, back

“I

nstagram,” says Ashley Martin, founder of Ashley Martin Home, when asked how she first connected with her clients, a husband-and-wife team of Napa Valley vintners. “The wife found me online but initially decided to work with someone else. When that relationship wasn’t working out, she called me and said, ‘I’ve decided I need to work with you after all.’ It was a full-circle moment.” Known for creating interiors in soft, moody hues, using woven textiles and natural materials, Martin designs homes that provide both refuge and a sense of stillness. “A well-designed home should allow you to walk in, take a deep breath, and leave as much of the outside world at the door as possible,” she says. “It should be a place where you can simply be.” That philosophy struck a chord with her clients, who, after falling in love with Jupiter for its “balance of luxury and laid-back living, wonderful schools, and endless sunshine,” purchased a canal-side property in Admirals Cove with a private dock, saltwater pool and spa, and a spacious S EP T E MBER 2 0 2 6

kitchen, pantry, elevator, and three-car garage. Working in close collaboration, Martin and Cherry rebuilt the home, replacing virtually every component while upgrading the HVAC and other core systems. “There was no drywall left by the time demolition was finished,” Martin says. “It was essentially just the exterior block walls.” Cherry also constructed an entirely new second-floor wing, with the boys’ bedrooms at one end, their father’s en suite office at the other, and a home gym and guest suite at its center. An attached two-golf-cart garage, an outdoor coldplunge pool, and a sauna in the primary bathroom further enhance the home’s resort-style amenities. Diving headlong into an endeavor that would stretch to nearly three years, Martin began in the foyer, treating it as a preamble before allowing the home’s narrative to unfold room by room. White oak flooring paired with hand-applied plaster, which she admits took months to complete, lends texture and dimension in lieu of conventional artwork. The hardworking hardwood reappears in custom cabinetry, beams, and other milled details, creating a visual throughline that continues throughout the first floor and up the sculptural staircase, one of the home’s crowning architectural achievements. For the palette, Martin chose an organic mix of soft creams, browns, and whites, punctuated by matte black, bronze, and satin brass finishes that lend the interiors a subtly lived-in patina. “You can have a beautiful home in Florida that doesn’t scream the beach,” she quips. Champagne cobble, another recurring motif deployed to striking effect,

surfaces in the living room, primary bathroom, and outdoor areas, while dolomite and Taj Mahal quartzite tile further connect the interiors. In the kitchen, expansive slabs of soapstone form the waterfall island and integrated sink, creating a bold, monolithic focal point. Martin balanced newly sourced furnishings with personal possessions that speak to the family’s individual personalities. Each son’s bedroom provides a dedicated place for homework while reflecting his individual interests—one tailored to his love of sports while the other revolves around a cherished collection of stuffed animals. The husband’s office takes a decidedly moodier turn, with dark cabinetry, an expansive executive desk, and a comfortable sitting area overlooking the boats passing below. “It feels like you’re perched in a lighthouse,” she notes. Downstairs, at the base of the staircase, an intimate seating arrangement serves as a fitting setting for a trio of rare Arabescato marble coffee tables repurposed from the couple’s Napa pad. Of all the home’s considered spaces, Martin regards the primary bathroom as her most accomplished. “I love it, especially for the layout,” says Martin, who maximized the expansive footprint with a freestanding soaking tub at its center and a glass wall that screens the rain shower behind it. The languorous retreat also encompasses a sauna, with a concealed doorway opening onto an outdoor cold-plunge pool and a pair of copper thermostatic showers. Although the couple rented a home nearby during construction, frequent travel between Jupiter and Napa prevented them from closely following its progress before the final reveal. Martin says the process unfolded with ease because her clients, the wife in particular, placed complete trust in her instincts. “She texted me while we were driving home to say how lucky she felt to have found me and that we had worked together,” Martin beams. “That was my biggest takeaway from the whole project because that’s what it’s all about: for a client to really feel at home and know they’ve gotten everything they hoped for.” (ashleymartinhome.com) ❖ SEP T EM B ER 2 0 2 6

JESSICA BORDNER

Gail Marshall is proof that following your instincts can yield self-empowering dividends. The Boston native began her career in dentistry before pivoting to interior design after successfully transforming spaces for friends and family, including her niece’s bedroom as a holiday gift. The experience prompted her to attend the New England School of Art and Design and later open Gail Marshall Interiors. After relocating to Jupiter with her husband, Tom, in 2010, Marshall reopened her eponymous firm three years later. The design doyenne primarily transforms single-family residences and condominiums, artfully mixing styles and eras while embracing collaboration and encouraging clients to push their creative boundaries. She likens her aesthetic to that of Tom Scheerer, one of her favorite A-list designers, whose work she describes as “polished yet so comfortable and inviting. Just what I aspire to provide.” Here, she shares an eclectic mix of personal favorites and everyday essentials. (gailmarshallinteriors.com) —K.S.

nspired by the sunsets that paint the sky above Jupiter, mixologist Jules Aron set out to bottle the feeling of golden hour. The result is 1000 Sunsets, a vibrant seasonal spritz available through the end of September. “The inspiration for this cocktail came from the vibrant golden hour and unforgettable sunsets at 1000 North,” says Aron. “I wanted to create something refreshing, balanced, and approachable that celebrates both the season and the incredible local ingredients available in Palm Beach County.” Aron has spent more than two decades championing fresh, natural ingredients and moderation behind the bar. Her latest creation reflects that philosophy, blending mango purée from Red Splendor Farm, local hibiscus syrup, sparkling water, and Palm Beach County’s own Munyon’s Paw-Paw, into a light, refreshing cocktail that lets regional ingredients shine. More than a summer sip, 1000 Sunsets is a toast to place—a cocktail as colorful as the view from the waterfront restaurant where it was born. TASTE REINVENTIONS

There’s fresh air and ownership at Shrimper’s Grill & Raw Bar. Set along the serene Manatee Pocket waterway in Port Salerno, Shrimper’s has been serving the Treasure Coast for almost four decades. The Old Florida classic features kitschy décor, open-air seating, and boat slips to dock and dine. The laid-back vibes, fish feeders, and Pup Menu make it a family and pet friendly spot to enjoy lunch, dinner, and their new weekend brunch complete with bottomless mimosas and Bloody Mary bar. Regulars will notice Day One staff members with whom they have formed “relationshrimps,” plus second generation servers, and the unofficial wild mascot, a heron named Chowder. Patron favorites include the crunchy grouper reuben (almost a million sold!), conch chowder, and coconut shrimp while the bartenders keep busy whipping up Piña coladas and coconut Margaritas. Diners on a budget can enjoy the weeknight Happy Hour and daily Sunset Menu which includes a three-course menu finished off with a slice of Key lime pie. Now under MAD Hospitality ownership (alongside sister establishments like New England Fish Market, Kickback Wellington, Calypso Pompano, and Fish Shack Lighthouse Point), the team is focused on honoring the history and longtime allure of Shrimper’s, while freshening up the details and enhancing the experience. Think: new programming like Buck-a-Shuck Oyster Night, new menu items like skillet seafood Newburg au gratin, and weekend features like Key lime coconut french toast. Even the iconic Studebaker boat that has graced the front lawn since the joint’s opening in 1992 is being restored to its former glory, giving another generation the perfect photo opportunity. and incandescent bulbs provided a steady, reliable light. At Jupiter Inlet, electricity also brought a radio beacon to the station. Its transmitters broadcast the Morse code letter “J” as another aid to navigation, while a generator provided backup power for both the lighthouse and radio beacon. The Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the Lighthouse Service in 1939 and eventually phased out lighthouse keepers nationwide. Jupiter’s last lighthouse keeper left in 1987. Today, all American lighthouses are automated, but the need for stewardship remains. The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse endures blazing sun, humid air, salt spray, windblown sand, torrential rain, lightning strikes, occasional hurricanes—and tens of thousands of climbers each year. Since 1994, the nonprofit Loxahatchee River Historical Society (LRHS) has served as the lighthouse’s modern keeper. Although staff no longer live on site or maintain a nightly vigil, they perform routine maintenance, painting, and cleaning. Contractors handle major projects such as painting the tower exterior or roof, while specialists periodically conserve the historic Fresnel lens. A Coast Guard team continues to conduct quarterly inspections. s long as there have been lighthouses, there has been a need for lighthouse keepers. Jupiter Inlet Light Station was established in 1860. By that time, the Lighthouse Service provided formal instruction manuals, made regular supply deliveries, and many stations had multiple keepers to share the workload. Three keepers served the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse at a time: a principal (or head keeper) and two assistants. By 1900, keepers were selected based on civil service exams. A keeper’s job was twofold: operations and maintenance. Every evening, one of the keepers at Jupiter climbed the 105 stairs, lowered a canvas curtain around the Fresnel lens, and lit the five concentric wicks of the oil lamp. Depending on the year, the lamp burned whale oil (spermaceti), lard oil, or kerosene. The keeper remained at the top, watching for ships and tending the lamp by trimming the wicks as needed. To rotate the lens, a clockwork mechanism connected by a cable to a heavy weight—much like a giant grandfather clock. Every few hours, the keeper would use a hand crank to wind the weight back up. There was normally a shift change at midnight, with the “graveyard shift” lasting until dawn. At sunrise, the keeper disengaged the rotation system, extinguished the lamp, and raised the canvas curtain to protect the lens and lamp from the sun. The keepers normally rotated duty shifts. Daylight hours were devoted to maintenance. The Fresnel lens and lantern glass had to be cleaned and moving parts needed to be oiled. In addition, there was brass to polish, buildings to paint, and the general task of keeping everything spotless. Keepers were responsible not only for the lighthouse itself but for the entire station, including the dwellings, auxiliary buildings, and grounds. They also maintained logbooks, while the head keeper corresponded with his superiors. Quarterly inspections ensured the keepers were meeting the Lighthouse Service’s standards. Lighthouse keeping was in no way a glamorous job, though it was both respected and important. Many lighthouses stood in isolated locations, where keepers contended with boredom and loneliness alongside the demands of the work. Electricity brought welcome relief in 1928. A motor turned the lens, S E P T E MBER 2 0 2 6
