Build a Lasting Retirement, Even in Times of Market Volatility
Even when markets become volatile, you can keep your retirement plan on track by staying focused and taking the time to rebalance and refresh your investments. The past eight years have been a heady time for the Dow, but recent large single-day drops have focused attention on how to protect your future if you’re planning to retire sometime soon. After a long bull market, portfolios that might have been well-balanced may now be overweight in stocks and may require reallocation toward lower-risk investments. Picture the future. If you’re concerned about market volatility, take the time to think carefully about your retirement and ask the big questions. How much will you need to retire? What sort of lifestyle do you want to maintain? Do you want to leave something to your heirs, or create a charitable legacy? Have you thought about what your healthcare needs might be in the future? According to Sal Tiano, “We need to think ahead. To stay on track, planning for a successful retirement requires flexibility and a comprehensive look at all aspects of your life.” Plan for a long retirement. Statistics show that individuals with higher incomes and healthier lifestyles tend to live longer. So if you’re over 65, you might live to 90 or even 95. Many of us underestimate the long lives we may enjoy. “We can live very long lives if we take care of
ourselves,” says Louise Armour. “This also means taking the time to look after our financial wellbeing so in retirement we can spend more time with the people we love and pursuing activities we find gratifying.” Harness your resources. Once you’ve got a team of advisors in place to help you realize your goals, it’s time to execute. The rules are clear: Save and invest consistently. Diversify your investments to minimize risk. Be sure to maximize Social Security benefits, both yours and your spouse’s. Other aspects of retirement planning are less obvious, but clearly as important. The use of credit, for example. It can be harder to borrow when in retirement, so it may make sense to arrange for a line of credit while you are still working. This way you can use credit strategically, as an alternative source of short-term funding for a home remodel, for example, or for unexpected healthcare expenses, when selling investments would make less sense, such as during a recession. John Smyth says, “Strategic use of credit is an often overlooked and underused strategy for protecting assets during retirement. It is a crucial tool to consider when establishing or refreshing an overall retirement plan.” Prepare for success. Now is the time to reassess how volatility may affect your balance sheet. Exercise control: Think about the different areas

of your wealth and how they serve different purposes. • Liquidity. Determine how much money you need as a safety net. These funds can be held in low-risk accounts. • Lifestyle. How much do you need to set aside to fund lifestyle expenses, now and later in retirement? These funds may be allocated to conservatively diversified portfolios. • Growth and wealth preservation. Consider investing any remaining assets more aggressively. These assets can fund longer-term goals such as transferring wealth to family and charitable organizations that are important to you. Even when markets are volatile, when it comes to planning for a satisfying retirement, information and good planning drive success and help create peace of mind. y love of honey has grown in the past few years. I have been trying to cut sugar from my diet for some time, but I still use honey on everything. Not too long ago, I met a group of people at deLITEful Kitchen in Stuart. Owner Jessica Addams introduced me to Jennifer Holmes of Hani Honey Company and some others from the Slow Food organization here on the Treasure Coast. I sat and talked with them about the work they are doing, but was particularly fascinated by the honey bees locally and around the world. I have several friends who have beehives as well, and this encouraged me to execute an article on the honey bee situation and educate our readers on some of the essential people in the industry. I hope you will take some of their recommendations on planting more flowers and calling the right people if you find an unwanted hive, so it can get appropriately assigned to a new location. Read about it on page 40 to gain a better understanding of how severe the bee issue is. And, of course, the holidays are here! I love this festive season, and as usual, we put together a holiday gift-buying section. This year, we stepped it up a bit and included luxurious items that might interest some of you. Otherwise, it is a great excuse to check out some new stores. Be sure to also flip through our “Downtown Stuart” section—included in every issue—for more ideas of where you can go to pack in a full day of holiday shopping. As for me, I will be baking lots of treats, buying some holiday flowers for the yard to help support the bee colonies in the area, finding time to rejoice in the good in my life—and also finding ways to share what’s meaningful with others. This season, invite a friend that has no family to join yours for a holiday. Give some effort into committing random acts of kindness. Surprise yourself with how much better it feels to give than to receive. Then, strive to take this into your daily life—well beyond this most beautiful time of year. Many blessings to all of you and your families and a Happy New Year.

and Sam was a year older than Rowan. The timing was always off; when Sam liked her, she was dating someone else, and vice versa. Sam ended up switching schools, and the two lost contact. Fast forward seven years to a few liked photos on Instagram and a direct message from Sam asking for her number, and “the rest is history,” Rowan says.
HOW THEY KNEW THEY FOUND THE ONE: Rowan never had one specific moment when she realized Sam was “the one.” “It was a million little moments that solidified my feelings for him and made me realize that I never wanted to be without him,” she says. “Sam is home to me, in every sense of the word; he is such an incredible man and one I look up to every day.” ON THE PROPOSAL: Rowan is a massive “Harry Potter” fan
but had never visited The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Orlando, so Sam planned a trip there for their first dating anniversary. After enjoying some rides and perusing the
area, Sam suggested taking a picture at the notorious Hogwarts Express, then asked someone to actually take a video of the proposal. Rowan set her butterbeer down to smile for the photo, then Sam began to profess his love before getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him. ON THE THEME AND DECOR: The wedding theme was modestly rustic, with a focus on greenery and shades of blue. Lots of olive leaves and branches were incorporated, as the olive branch symbolizes wisdom, peace and hope—all things the couple aspires to mold into their marriage. The olive theme played a part in the invitations, table arrangements and room décor, and guests received homemade olive oil bottles as wedding favors. ON THE “LAST” DANCE: Their DJ asked Sam weeks before
the wedding to pick a surprise song he wanted to dance with Rowan to at the end of the night. As the reception came to a close, the DJ had everyone leave, then he also left after putting the song on. “I didn’t recognize the song [at first], but as Sam started singing along to the lyrics, I quickly realized it was ‘Beautiful Crazy’ by Luke Combs, a song we had sung together so many times before,” Rowan says. “I have honestly never felt more loved by someone than in that moment with him.”

afé Martier is a new and welcome addition to the Stuart dining scene. Located in the historic Post Office Arcade downtown, the restaurant is styled as a modern speakeasy and features a sprawling “vintage chic” interior with multiple dining and drinking areas. Prohibition-era cocktails are a specialty at Café Martier, and there’s live music—a piano, guitar and saxophone combo— every night. Brunch and dinner are served daily, and guests can enjoy happy hour in the piano bar every day before 6 p.m. and after 10 p.m. I came in for dinner with a friend recently and kicked things off with a Smooth Criminal, a refreshing cocktail made with watermelon, Tito’s vodka, cucumber and lime. Our server, Scott, recommended the jumbo crab cakes and the goat cheese croquettes as appetizers, and we happily followed his suggestions. The two large crab cakes were chock-full of large
pieces of sweet crab meat (no fillers) and served over a creamy remoulade sauce. The deepfried croquettes—a combination of goat cheese, mashed potatoes and scallions—were exceptionally light and full of flavor. For my entree, I ordered the filet mignon, which came with roasted fingerling potatoes and asparagus. The beef was perfectly cooked and extremely tender, and a lush bordelaise sauce was an ideal accompaniment. My dining companion had the Mediterranean yellowtail snapper; a generous portion of two pan-fried filets topped with a fresh and vibrant medley of arugula, cherry tomatoes, capers and olives. Favorite dessert options include the flourless chocolate cake and the tiramisu. Diners are also invited to take a guided tour of the restaurant to learn about the building’s unique history—one more good reason to plan a trip to Café Martier soon.

uxury is in the details, and nowhere is this truer than in the smallest details of a home: the finishing touches such as light fixtures, door and cabinet hardware, and faucets. As with other aspects of a luxury home, consideration should be given to the craftsmanship, quality of materials, function and rarity so the pieces further make a statement. Often overlooked, lighting is one of the most important aspects in setting the tone and mood of a space. The first step is to decide which type of lights—pendants, chandeliers, wall lights, table or floor lamps and flush mounts—will work best. Scale must also be considered. Then, liberty can be taken to choose high-quality, unique pieces that meld with the room and home’s design. Whether the space is simple and understated or heavily decorated, the door and cabinet hardware, even the hinges, should receive thought and support the home’s uniqueness. Hardware serves a functional purpose, but it also attracts the eye and can make or break the décor in a room. Styles range from handmade to vintage, and the material of the pieces can vary between brass, bronze, stainless steel, crystal or glass, to name a few. The current trend for selecting finishing touches is to mix materials, and this continues with faucets. The same materials used for hardware are used with faucets, but matching exactly to hardware and lighting can be severe. The goal is for the small details to function as needed while providing an interesting but cohesive look to the room and home. The most luxurious faucets are hand-made, designed by a classic designer, and produced with valuable materials such as precious metals. Executed properly, the home’s finishing touches can further elevate the luxury home’s appearance.

T
ime is such a precious commodity. When a short-lived gap of freedom presents itself, I’m usually out fishing. Recently, foul weather ruined my plans for the day, so I plop down on my recliner and sulk for a bit while aimlessly channel surfing—that is, until my wife takes control of the remote. She lands on a reality show featuring a petite woman on a mission to clean out closets like a samurai. I am captivated by this diminutive host who guts strangers’ closets and garages filled with clutter. I’m intrigued, yet fighting the desire to do something much more productive than watching a stranger tidy up. Stifled by Mother Nature and the darkened stormy clouds outside, I’m further drawn into this show about the freedom associated with releasing the hoarding grip on things not used. I’m quite fastidious—however, things can always be slightly more organized. While consumed in the show and stubbornly refusing to spend the precious free moments cleaning out a closet or sorting through old T-shirts, I finally decide to make a move: I’m inspired—it’s time to purge the fishing storage tubs. What a great idea it was. While cleaning, I discovered and parted ways with decades-old fishing line; unusable lures chewed up from being cast into docks, trees and rocks and reel parts I will never need or use. For the boat I no longer own, the expensive waxes and cleaners stored in a tub after one use are no more. The garbage can was filling up quickly. Down went tubes of grease and oil that were dried up and unusable. I must have said 30 times this day, “Why do I have this?” and “Oh, yeah, I remember this.” Pitched! I was being productive. What brought me the most joy, of course, is that all of this cleaning, organizing and parting ways still involved my favorite past time: fishing. Irrespective of Mother Nature’s not-so-perfecttiming, I’ve concluded and accepted that even if she has other plans for my day, I still find a way to keep fishing top of mind. “Thank you!”

I
n the late ‘90s, April Hope remembers spotting a small “For Rent” sign on a little storefront in downtown Stuart. After working in retail for more than a decade, she thought to herself, “Well, why not?” “I knew I could do it, so I went for it,” she says of starting her boutique, April Daze. “I opened on a shoestring budget and maxed out a few credit cards. It was scary, but worth it.” In three years, she earned back her entire investment and then some. Hope recently celebrated 20 years of running her chic boutique in downtown Stuart, which offers an eclectic line of clothing, shoes, jewelry, home decor and gifts. “The store became way more successful than I ever could have dreamed,” Hope says. “Twenty years went by in a flash. Looking back, I’ve had 20 years of fun, friendship and the most wonderful memories; I’ve curated a space that feels good and makes customers want to return.” How did April Daze begin? Was it always your dream to open a boutique? After living in England for a year with my

boyfriend, I moved to Boca Raton, Florida, in my early 20s to be near my sister. I worked at The Body Shop, the body care company from England, for almost 10 years, where I was in charge of merchandising and buying for all eight stores in Palm Beach and Miami. After a stint in Charleston, South Carolina, for a few years to be closer to family, I ended up back in Florida—this time in Stuart, where I opened April Daze.
How does it feel to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of April Daze? Right before our 20th anniversary party this past October, I woke up early and couldn’t wait to get into the store to start merchandising. That’s when I thought to myself, ‘It’s unbelievable how I still love doing this after so many years.’ It’s not always easy but it sure is gratifying.
What’s your process like for choosing items that make it into the store? I find items for the store everywhere I go. I am always on the hunt, but I have to love something to want to bring it into April Daze. With all of the competition in the world these days, you have to be aware and open to new and different things. Anyone who has been in the store knows there is something for everyone, whether you’re looking for clothing, a special piece of jewelry or a funny gift. We have a corner dedicated to joke items, where people literally stand and laugh throughout the day. It’s those little moments that make it all worth it.
When looking forward, what do you think the next 20 years will look like for the boutique? My staff and so many of my customers are my family. Without them, there is no April Daze. You know you have made it when your customers hug you and tell you they love you. They make all of this worthwhile. As for the future, I hope to keep rockin’ at April Daze and give customers what they want! And have a good time doing it.

t 84, the senior consultant for Merrill Lynch’s Jordan McGovern Group shows no signs of stopping. Floyd Devoe “Bud” Jordan, a Stuart resident since 1971, thinks about calling it quits yet never sets a date. “People keep trying to retire me,” Jordan says. “They have for a long time.” The Florida State University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in accounting puts the needs of his clients ahead of golf and travel. “We manage a lot of money, and the responsibilities are to be attuned to the market and make sure what our clients’ needs are and try to make sure they’re met,” he says. When the Montgomery, Alabama, native came to town, he became its first stockbroker, joining the firm Francis I. DuPont & Co. “I was 33,” he says. “It was a good move.” In 1985, he co-founded the Economic Council of Martin County intending to financially develop the sleepy suburb. “We needed industries and jobs,” Jordan says, noting the biggest employer was a flower farm at U.S. Highway 1 and Indian Street. He also co-founded the Martin County

Community Foundation in 1988, which has since been renamed The Community Foundation Martin-St. Lucie, to help account for and safeguard charitable giving. He recalls a client who died and left money to 17 charities, and the charities didn’t know how to handle it. That moment encouraged Jordan to set up the foundation. In what many consider his crowning achievement, Jordan founded the St. Lucie River Initiative—now the Rivers Coalition— in 1991. The Rivers Coalition and its members have launched an effort to save the river from pollution and restore its ecological health. “The intent was to identify the problem and proceed to clean up the waterway,” he says. “We naively thought it would be easy to do.” In 2017, he abruptly resigned from the Economic Council of Martin County after U.S. Sugar bought a seat at the table. “To me, that was a fox in the henhouse,” Jordan says. “As far as I know, they paid more money so that they had more than one seat.” At issue are the controversial discharges of water from Lake Okeechobee into the estuary. “The bottom line is the St. Lucie River is
the economic backbone of the community,” he says. “You have a bad river, you have a bad economy. It’s that simple.” What was Stuart like in the 1970s? In 1970, Stuart was a flower-farming and fishing community. In some cases, you had to go out of the city for medical and professional services. How has it changed over the years? There’s been a large addition to medical and professional services, more traffic, continued growth of communities outside city limits and the arts and entertainment have had a tremendous boom. What do you enjoy most about living here? It’s still a small-town feeling with a wide range of activities. The weather’s great in the wintertime. We’ve got The Lyric Theater, which is putting on some very nice shows. It’s just become a little more sophisticated.

t’s not hard to get miserable reading news about the honey bees. Responsible for the pollination of much of our food supply, the bees are under threat from pesticides, a troublesome mite and a mysterious disease. But locally, there’s lots of good news, too: Beekeeping has grown exponentially in the past few years. A few Martin County experts have begun a quest to help the bees, so the honey bee might just be poised for a major comeback. What does this mean, and should we still be worried about the apiaries? We compiled seven things you need to know about honey bees in Martin County.

It’s the Golden Age of Beekeeping Right now in Florida, far more people are tending to far more bees than ever before. In 2009, the state had more than 1,450 registered beekeepers, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. By 2019, that number had grown to more than 4,730. In 2009, those beekeepers managed 230,000 hives, a number that today has grown to 630,000—meaning the number of beehives has nearly tripled in the past decade. In Martin County alone, 44 beekeepers have registered with the state, keeping 4,000 colonies. Amy Vu, with the Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory at the University of Florida in Gainesville, says those numbers should come as good news to anybody worried about the bees. “We have more beekeepers than we ever had, and the number of hives overall has grown dramatically,” Vu says. In Martin County, the number of backyard beekeepers seems to grow every year as more people become

aware of the threats to the honey bee. Jennifer Holmes, with the Hani Honey Company in Stuart, says that in the 15 years she’s been keeping bees, she has watched the local clubs and meet-ups grow in size as more people get interested in it.

And Now for the Bad News While the number of beekeepers and honey bee colonies increase, so do the losses. Studies suggest gulfstreammediagroup.com
40 percent of bee colonies are dying every year from a combination of challenges they face nowadays. “People need to be concerned about this,” Vu says. “We have a huge number of colonies these days, so it’s not as bad as it could be. But yes, beekeepers are losing a lot of colonies.” The numbers this year for Holmes were hard to stomach. She took her first “Beekeeping 101” class 15 years ago and started a commercial beekeeping operation not long gulfstreammediagroup.com
after. She typically maintains about 300 hives kept mostly at farms throughout Martin County. Her largest concentration of 75 to 150 hives are kept at Palm City Farms, where her honey is sold at the retail store. In 2019, she lost half of them to a series of threats, some to a varroa mite that’s nearly impossible to eradicate. “This year, 2019, was a really tough year. It’s hard not to get emotional when you see an entire hive die,” Holmes says. DECEMBER 2019

In addition to the mite that took so many of Holmes’ hives, there’s also the danger of colonies dying from pesticides, of the decrease in pollen-producing plants, which have been replaced by development, and a mysterious disease called colony collapse disorder, in which entire colonies die. Nationwide, things aren’t as good as they are in Florida. Honey bee colonies managed by people declined from 6 million in 1947 to just 2.5 million today, according to the USDA. Colony collapse disorder is a big factor—about a quarter of all honey bee hives died in the winter of 2006-2007. Whatever is killing the bees also threatens other pollinator populations, including butterflies. Monarchs alone have dropped by 84 percent.

The threats to bees have a serious potential impact on humans. Without bees, three-quarters of the world’s food crops would not continue to be farmed, including chocolate, coffee, avocados and most berries. With all the threats to bees these days, Holmes estimates it’s five times harder to keep honey bees alive.

Most Likely, You Shouldn’t Start Beekeeping It might seem like the easiest answer to the threat to bees was that everyone should become an apiarist. But for most people, Holmes says, it’s too much work. “Really, you have to think of it like getting a pet,” she says. “If you’re the type whose pet is their everything, then maybe this is for you. If you’re somebody who doesn’t want

to spend a lot of time with your pet, you probably shouldn’t get a beehive.” It’s not that beekeeping is too time-consuming. For most people, it takes no more than a half-hour every two or three weeks. Then it’ll require a few hours a year to prevent the hive from swarming, where a portion of the hive will fly off to start a new colony elsewhere, perhaps in a neighbor’s roof. But for many, Vu says, they can’t dedicate the time to research the problems hives face. When it’s that time for a hive to swarm in the spring, backyard beekeepers must be able to predict the behavior and figure out the steps to prevent it from happening. “I never just jump into saying everybody should become a beekeeper,” Vu says. “The answer to the threats facing honey bees is not just simply more colonies.”

What Non-Beekeepers Can Do Among the biggest threats to bees these days are pesticides, which can be carried back on foragers alongside pollen and be passed through the hive until the entire colony perishes. To prevent that, Holmes says to reduce or avoid spraying yards with chemicals, switching instead to organic fertilizers that are safe for pollinators. Instead of spraying for mosquitos or using “bombs” that spread deadly chemicals in clouds, reduce standing water where mosquitos breed. Homeowners can also have water sources in their yards that bees can use to drink, ideally with moving water like from a fountain to prevent mosquitos. Landscaping with plants that produce pollen year-round helps bees as well, Vu says. “Just by putting pollen-producing plants in your yard,

you can do a lot to save the bees.”

Rescue Wayward Colonies If you find a bee swarm in your yard or a colony somewhere it isn’t wanted, don’t try to kill it. It’s likely the colony can find a new home elsewhere. Rescuing wayward colonies is something that’s almost always possible when bees set up their residence in trees or homes, says Don Sloane, who retired from the city of Stuart’s sanitation department two years ago and soon became an avid beekeeper. Sloane adopted the hobby after his son had a baby and no longer had time for his backyard hive. He soon became addicted to it and started rescuing unwanted hives. “It’s kind of the coolest thing I’ve ever done, to tell you the truth,” Sloane says. He estimates he saves three to four hives a week now throughout Martin County, charging people his costs on a sliding scale of how much they can pay, from $175 for an easy job to $385 for a difficult removal from a wall. “I get a lot of calls from elderly people, and I just don’t charge them anything,” Sloane says. “For me, it’s more about saving the bees.” Once the hive is safely removed, Sloane either tries to find a backyard beekeeper to adopt them or sells them to commercial honey bee companies for $150 a pop. He says his project to save the bees has to be far more of a priority. “Once the bees are gone,” Sloane says, “we’re gone.”

OK, So You Want to Become a Beekeeper If the time and the research needed for a colony isn’t daunting for you, it’s not hard to begin. Beehives can be bought online and mailed to you, and the equipment needed (protective suit, smoker, hive tool) is also available from online retailers like Amazon. All in, you should spend under $500. In addition to the online route, beehives can also be purchased through rescuers like Sloane or from commercial operations like Holmes’ Hani Honey Company. There’s a marked benefit to buying local bees, too, because they’re more likely to be acclimated to the local climate and already know the pollen-producing plants.

Groups including the Treasure Coast Beekeepers Association have regular meet-ups to help new beekeepers solve problems in their colonies, like how to treat for mites or prevent swarming. University of Florida even offers a Bee College for apiarists, who can go on to become certified Master Beekeepers. For Holmes, beekeeping provides an endless fascination with trying to understand a creature so surprisingly complex.
“When you open a beehive, you have to use the word magical,” Holmes says. “Anybody who cares about nature or creation has to be interested in bees.” There’s also a problem-solving aspect of beekeeping, where apiarists have to diagnose a colony’s successes and failures, Holmes says. For instance, a colony might suddenly see a drop in the production of a new bee or honey, or both, and the beekeeper has to decide which

measures—if any—to take to make sure the change isn’t fatal for the colony. “We have this dance we do to keep the bees alive,” Holmes says.

Martin County’s Honey is Legendary There are several types of honey well-known to consumers: tupelo, orange blossom and mango are among them. But one of the most popular varieties of honey in Martin County just might beat them in taste, Holmes says. Found throughout Martin County, the saw palmetto is a low-lying brush plant with sharp leaves that look like spindly palm fronds. It flowers in spring and early summer, with spindly flowers that look like rows of fluffy pipe cleaners. When in bloom, bees will swarm the saw palmetto flowers. From its pollen, they’ll make honey that Holmes says is light and mild, with a distinct flavor like no other honey, malty and caramel with a bit of spice and an amber color. Holmes should know. She’s studying honey analysis through a school in Bologna, Italy, that will give her a degree like a sommelier of honey. She traveled to Italy in October for one of her palate tests, which have required her to identify a honey’s level of salt, sweet and bitterness. Advanced lessons will require her to figure out what type of flower the bees used to make the honey and even the region, eventually going right down to blends from multiple places. Even with her internationally tested palate, Holmes still believes in the honey produced in Martin County. “I think saw palmetto honey just might be the tastiest of all the honeys,” she says. ar-a-Lago and I have been involved intimately my whole life, one incarnation after another. Through a happy twist of fate, my maternal grandfather was the honorable Joseph E. Davies, and my step-grandmother was the legendary Marjorie Merriweather Post. Going to my grandparents’ was always exciting because granddaddy was more of a father than my actual father, an army general who was always traveling, at war, womanizing and not in the least fond of small children. He was good looking to the extreme, 6 feet, 7 inches and a world-class polo player, which undoubtedly added to his savoir-faire with the ladies. The first time I had a chance to explore Mar-a-Lago in depth was when we came down from Washington, D.C., early one year well before the season, which ran from Christmas until Easter. This particular year my mother, governess and I arrived in September when there was only a skeletal staff, although it would be considered gigantic by any other standard. So I had plenty of time to explore every nook and cranny of Mar-a-Lago to my heart’s content, as long as I did my homework and didn’t get in anyone’s way. At the time, I didn’t know the reason we were there early was so mother could establish residency to apply for a divorce as she’d accidentally discovered the latest women in my father’s life (there were always more than one!). Meanwhile, I was allowed to zip over to the Bath and Tennis Club to get my swimming lessons. At age 6, this made me feel extremely sophisticated and rather soigné. Of course, the reason this was possible was because Aunt Marjorie, as she disliked being called “grandmother,” had constructed a huge tunnel under AIA to protect the kiddies when they went to the beach or the B&T. Mar-a-Lago was a dream right out of “The Arabian Nights.” This was Aunt Marjorie’s second home in Palm Beach, the first being Hogarcito, or “Little Cottage,” over on Golfview Road. The name is as ironic as calling the Newport mansions “summer cottages.” Though not as lavish as Mar-a-Lago, it was still a most impressive home.

Aunt Marjorie realized she needed something more grandiose than Hogarcito if she were to become the doyenne of the social scene. She would have to surpass El Mirasol, Lucretia Stotesbury’s famous estate. She obtained a geological survey to find the most solid coral ridge in Palm Beach to anchor the house. It would have to be on solid ground to support the home she had in mind and resist Florida’s hurricanes. For weeks, she crawled through animal paths along with the intrepid James Griffin—carpenter, caretaker and head groundskeeper—in search of the perfect location. They finally settled on a 17acre tract that went from sea to lake, hence “Mar-a-Lago.” Once again, she chose Marion Wyeth, the soft-spoken Paris educated architect who had designed Hogarcito. She wanted a different style of house this time; one that could be constructed so the main rooms and the bedrooms could be accessed from a patio or courtyard, but she wasn’t excited by any of Wyeth’s drawings. Then came a stroke of luck. Today, that might be a problem with the ecologists, but in those days there was no thought. As the bills continued to mount, Aunt Marjorie had to call in Wyeth, her original architect and tell him he had to come back and manage the project as, “Urban may be an artist, but he’s definitely not a practical man.” She pleaded, “He doesn’t know anything about plumbing, heating, electricity or half the other things that go into making up a house.” Finally Wyeth agreed both to manage the job and to try and control Urban’s wild flights of fancy that were proving so costly. The house was already way over budget; the final cost was more than $5 million, as opposed to the $1 million she had originally appropriated. But it would probably cost more than $500 million today. Because of the two architects—one classical and the other art nouveau—the house could not be said to be of one design or style, but whatever it was, it was spectacular. Among the other disparate building supplies that went into it, there were three boatloads of doric stone from Genoa. In the center of the living room on a slightly raised section (to make the most of the view) was an enormous window edged with stone pelicans, said to be the largest picture window ever built in the world at that time. This was my Captain Nemo window. Through it I sailed the seven seas, collecting great treasures from all over the ancient world. Wyeth added a rare collection of Moorish and Spanish tiles from the estate of New York socialite Mrs. Horace Havemeyer. Aunt Marjorie thought she was buying about 20,000 tiles, but there were more than double when the shipment arrived. One local architect at the time claimed Mar-a-Lago had more HispanoMoorish tiles than anywhere outside the Alhambra in Spain. The tiles were a real stroke of luck for Donald Trump when he bought the property, as he found a huge cache of them in the garages and was able to use them when he converted some of the garages and servants’ quarters into the spa and guest quarters, having them tie together with the main house. Inside the mansion is a 34-foot high ceiling in the living room designed around a series of tall needlework tapestries, which once hung in a Venetian palazzo. modified from the thousand-winged ceiling motif of the Accademia in Florence. Similarly, the seven arches around the living room were decorated in a millefleur background with the armorial insignia of the Venetian Doges. Beneath that were rare gilded Spanish lanterns, a 16th-century Spanish rug and a hooded Italian gothic fireplace, which is nothing less than breathtaking. Toward the back of the living room are four marble steps
with Italian columns mounted on stone lions leading up to my Captain Nemo window where I voyaged endlessly as a child. Just beyond the fireplace is an arch leading to another small room called the monkey loggia, having stone carvings of the creatures, which somehow never appealed to me. A few years ago, I interviewed Donald Trump in New York for another article. He had no idea who I was or that I had any con-

nection to the family or the property. Only knowing I lived in Fort Lauderdale, he said I’d have to visit Mar-a-Lago and see the additions he’d made to the property. When we finished, he asked if there was anything else I needed, so I said I’d just like to have one more party there. He was caught completely by surprise. I explained my family connection and that I’d spent part of every winter there as a child and continued to be a regular guest until Aunt Marjorie passed away. He graciously agreed, and we had an event for our cruising yacht club. When word got out about the party, we had any number of requests for new memberships. Since then, my step-cousin, Marjorie Post Dye, or Marwee (as she was known in the family), and I would meet there every year. She lived in Santa Monica in what we jokingly referred to as Mar-a-Lago West. Until Marwee’s recent death, at times during our stay we would dine with Trump or his sister.

Whatever one thinks about Trump’s politics, he has done a fabulous job with Mar-a-Lago. He bought it furnished and has retained all of its original grandeur, tying in the additions and renovations of various spaces so they look like an original part of the property. My only reservation is that Trump has adopted our coat of arms as his own. It is carved into the hood of the fireplace with the word “Integritas” as its motto. In the beginning, he took out “Integritas” and changed it to “Mar-a-Lago,” which I rather liked and thought Aunt Marjorie and granddaddy would have liked as well. But now he has changed it to “Trump.” It is now his logo on everything; clothes, golf hats and even the towels in the men’s and ladies’ rooms. To give him credit, he probably thought it was the Post crest, but it most definitely belongs to the Davies family.

More than 100 golfers participated in the annual Sailfish Point Golf Tournament for Treasure Coast Hospice.
