It has been a whirlwind start to season, and I’m already running out of things to wear. I’m writing this just before Halloween, and this weekend I’m heading to the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund gala at the Kravis Center. This organization is one I support wholeheartedly, so it looks like it’s time to go shopping! Honestly, though, I’m truly honored to attend so many events for so many great causes, and I love seeing everyone out and about being good humans.
When I’m not putting on fancy duds for the soiree of the week, you can often find me on location somewhere directing one of the magazine’s many photo shoots and getting to know our cover subjects. Recently, I had the chance to spend a morning with the very talented (and über-successful) Tony DiTerlizzi, author and illustrator of a slew of beloved fantasy/adventure books. Some of the big projects he’s worked on that you may have heard of? He did illustrations for many of the Dungeons & Dragons books and magazines, and he created two of the most popular children’s fantasy series of the moment—The Spiderwick Chronicles and WondLa. Both series were made into TV shows and are available to watch right now—check out Spiderwick on Roku and WondLa on Apple TV+. Tony grew up on the county line and went to school locally, from Hobe Sound Elementary to Murray Middle School to graduating high school at Stuart’s South Fork High. I’m so grateful to him for hanging with us and being such a blast! Read all about Tony’s artistic endeavors in “The Fantastical Journey of Tony D,” beginning on page 52. I also spend a lot of time during season chowing down at new local restaurants (or established ones I’m finally getting around to trying). Recently, I had the pleasure of dining on the incredible cuisine of Chef Michael Rolchigo. Michael owns Tavolena in Jupiter, and he and his beautiful wife, Lisa, invited me to their home to sample some of the staples they often serve to family and friends at their holiday dinner. Chef Michael pulled out all the stops: myriad appetizers (the stuffed clams casino were my fave), entrées including a Chateaubriand with black currant demi-glace and his signature Sunday Italian Feast (meatballs, sausage, boneless pork ribs, ziti), homemade basil ice cream, and more, plus a delicious Portuguese sangria to wash it all down. Michael’s heritage is a combo of Italian and Portuguese, and he excels at both cuisines. Definitely visit his restaurant when you have the chance! Lisa (who used to own the tabletop specialty store Trovare in Jupiter) showed off her incredible interior design skills with a magical tablescape decorated in the spirit of both the holidays and our beautiful seaside location— so stunning! See some photos from our feast and get to know more about Michael and Lisa in “Season’s Eatings,” which starts on page 60.
As we wind down 2024 and I reflect on all the cool locals I’ve met over the past year, I feel incredibly lucky. Everyone I’ve worked with on stories and photo shoots for Stuart Magazine has been interesting for sure, but they are all just really good people to boot Here’s to another year of adventure. Happy holidays to everyone—be good!
Peace and blessings,

Just in time for the holidays, this issue features a special Gift Guide advertising section. I hope it gives you some great ideas for holiday giving, whether for a family member, friend, “host/hostess with the mostest”—or a little something for yourself. All items in the guide are from local businesses, as we always like to promote shopping locally and supporting small-business owners. And don’t miss the Downtown Stuart advertising section, featuring many local spots for your shopping and dining needs this season.
This season will be full of cheer, with lots of fun events to celebrate the holidays. On December 5, head to downtown Stuart for the Winter Stroll, where you can sip and shop goods from local businesses from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. (For tickets, visit stuartmainstreet.org.) Harbour Bay Plaza will host Christmas in the Courtyard December 7, 14, and 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sip & Shop December 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (harbourbayplaza.com). This season promises to be chock-full of gatherings, fundraisers, and entertainment, and I know I’ll see many of you out and about in 2025. On December 1, I’m excited for the arrival of the UFOs: Denial, Disclosure, Discernment exhibition at the Elliott Museum. Martin Artisans Guild’s Meet the Artists event the first Wednesday in December (4 to 6 p.m. at The Palm Room Gallery) will also be a nice outing.

Our family restaurant started in 1973 when my grandparents opened their first location. My parents carried on the tradition, and in 1986 ventured out on their own.
Though none of us had formal training, passion kept us thriving. My father, our family’s foundation, passed in 2020, but his legacy continues.
Today, my husband, mother, and I proudly celebrate 15 years at our current location, with a strong following and a successful catering business.

Pollen may be enemy number one to some who are prone to allergies, but it plays a crucial role in our ecosystem. Pollination is vital to plant reproduction. When insects, wind, and animals such as bats transfer pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma, seed fertilization occurs. According to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary COO Christen Mason, nearly 90 percent of all wild plants are dependent on insects for pollination. That’s why the nonprofit organization recently planted a “pollinator garden” at its Jupiter Farms sanctuary, filled with 53 native species including Partridge pea, Fiddlewood, and Blackbead to attract pollinating creatures. Since the opening in October, honeybees,
butterflies, leaf cutter bees, tiny sweat bees, and more have been buzzing about, doing their part to keep nature thriving. Mason says the space was designed to be a peaceful spot where “people can come and sit and enjoy being surrounded by plants and nature.” She also hopes the garden will help educate visitors about habitat protection and conservation and inspire at-home gardeners to consider the bigger picture in their personal landscaping. “We can all help pollinator species by using native plants in our yards that benefit our native insects,” she says. “This has a ripple effect because it also creates habitat for birds to use for shelter, foraging, and nesting.” buschwildlife.org —Paige Feigenbaum

Since opening in 1987, the Marriott Hutchinson Island Beach Resort has made its way into the heart of the Treasure Coast community. Perched on 200 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, the property—one of the largest coastal resorts in the area—is known for its ideal location and incredible views. So when it came time to reimagine the Marriott property, it wasn’t a transformation that longtime general manager Candice Miller took lightly.
This past summer, the result of that reimagination was unveiled, a project that included updates to 200 guest rooms and suites inside the main resort tower, social spaces, and the addition of some exciting new amenities.
In the guest rooms and suites, the goal was to bring the coastal/tropical vibe of the resort’s environs indoors. Says Miller: “We thoughtfully designed the reimagination around
the local natural landscape.” To that end, the rooms have been washed in ocean-inspired palettes and textures, with soothing blues and taupe and turquoise accents. Ground-floor rooms feature sliding doors that open to the poolside patio, providing direct views of the resort’s main pool.
Social spaces like meeting rooms and the lobby area received a similar refresh. The 30,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor meeting space now has a relaxed and elegant beachside ambience, thanks to sand-colored interiors with blue-toned accents. The lobby showcases a playful design of seating areas suspended by ropes, a nod to the nautical scene that awaits the Hutchinson Island visitor. Notes of pineapple and fresh woods invoke a “tropical oasis” beach vibe, says Miller.
At press time, plans were also underway to open two brand-new amenities later in the fall: a coffee shop and a fun, family entertainment space. Miller says The Hutch Café & Market will serve as a meeting point for both locals and guests alike, while Local Lanes Duckpin Bowling, Dining & Drinks will showcase a variation of the traditional game of bowling and more. marriott.com/pbiir
To preserve the history of the area’s esteemed Highwaymen artists, the City of Fort Pierce broke ground this summer on the new Fort Pierce Highwaymen Museum. The museum is taking over the 3,776-square-foot Jackie L. Caynon Sr. building on Avenue D and will house rotating and limited exhibits that honor the 26 African-American artists of the 1950s and 1960s. “Our mission is to preserve and protect the history of the artists’ work, educate the public, and promote art in all its facets,” says Doretha Hair Truesdell, widow of Highwaymen artist Alfred Hair and president of the Original Florida Hall of Fame Highwaymen Foundation. Initially, the museum will display one painting from each of the 26 Highwaymen artists, some of whom are still residing in the area and are expected to make in-person appearances. Plans are also in the works to provide a community space where the museum will host public programs, while a charming brick pathway outside will lead to a garden promenade where guests can sit and meditate or set up an easel and paint alfresco. To help raise more funding for the project, the organization is offering custom-engraved bricks for purchase, which can be dedicated to a loved one. Celebrity realtor and reality TV star Ryan Serhant of Netflix’s Owning Manhattan has moved into Harbourside Place, opening up shop in September. The new office currently houses 20 agents who represent buyers and sellers from West Palm Beach to Vero Beach.
“New York City is fastpaced, dense, and expensive, which is why clients and I love coming down to Florida and being on the water and taking it a little bit slower,” says Serhant. “Jupiter has amazing dining and culture that is attractive to buyers coming from larger cities.” Serhant, who first rose to fame on Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Listing, says he plans to have an in-person presence at the Jupiter location a few times a year, but he remains tight-lipped on whether the office will be featured on season two of his popular series. “We’re excited to show more of our agents and teams in season two [of Owning Manhattan],” he says. “We just can’t say where yet, so you’ll have to stay tuned.” serhant.com —P.F.
Having a wine refrigerator or cellar in your home is a luxury not every oenophile can accommodate, so many wine lovers look for alternatives to store their collections. Enter Compass Self Storage, a new “wine locker” that opened in Jupiter in April. At the self-storage facility on Frederick Small Road, units are climate-controlled at the ideal temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with 60 to 70 percent humidity, and run on a backup generator to ensure conditions are upheld at all times. The sophisticated, customstained red oak lockers can accommodate collections from 9 to 761 cases and range in price from $83 to $2,295 a month (and sometimes lower when there are sales). compassselfstorage.com —P.F.

A new eco art project in Old Palm City aims to decontaminate rainwater, prevent flooding, and educate the public
BY PAIGE FEIGENBAUM
Many artists paint landscapes, but landscapes themselves can be works of art. Ecological art, or eco art for short, combines the creative vision of an artist with the expertise of civil engineers, landscape architects, horticulturists, and biologists who use native flora and fauna, rocks, soil, and the land to create a sustainable masterpiece.
In Martin County, the Ripple Stormwater Eco Art Project (Ripple...As a Drop of Water Becomes a River) is just that. Located a short walk from the parking lot at Charlie Leighton Park in Palm City, Ripple was created to combat the excessive rainwater in the area and provide an educational art trail for the public at the same time. Rainwater can become contaminated by things like oil, litter, waste, chemicals, and fertilizer. If left untreated, it can have negative effects on marine life, humans, animals, and plants. The phosphorous
and nitrogen from fertilizers is especially harmful, contributing to algal blooms that can lead to the death of fish and cause various health issues. The Ripple project includes a stormwater treatment system that connects the Old Palm City area to the St. Lucie River at four sites—a wetland, a bioswale, a pond, and a beach—using nature as a filtration system. Water seeps through soil and limestone rocks, and native plants soak up nutrients, cleaning the water and helping to manage flooding.
“We have added a beautiful amenity to our community,” says Susan Kores, director of the Martin
County Office of Community Development. “Martin County has a history of deep connection to the river and to the environmental aspect of that. Old Palm City is very low-lying, and there was lots of pollution in that river. That area is very biodiverse.”
The project includes a 2.36-acre walking trail with interactive art and educational installations that showcase the power of art and nature coming together. The collaborative effort involved eco artist Lucy Keshavarz, the county, and the community.
Since completion of the project in March, the total phosphorus has been reduced by 34 percent, and nitrogen has gone down by 72 percent. “We definitely hit our goals,” says Kores. “And those goals would be connection and responsibility to the river, education about environmental stewardship, and water quality.”
The Ripple project was made possible by two National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Grants and the support of Martin County’s Community Redevelopment Agency, MartinArts, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. martin.fl.us/ripple ❖

Earlier this year, Jupiter resident Nasheema Travaglini launched an elevated shopping service that brings fashion right to your front door. Owner of The Style Club Palm Beach, Travaglini meets with clients one-on-one (in the Palm Beach and Martin County area) to get an idea of their likes and dislikes, then hand-picks contemporary and designer brands to offer a curated collection tailored to their personal style. She brings the collection to the client’s home, set up like a pop-up event where friends can join in on the shopping experience.
“My desire is to offer not just personal shopping and styling but also a full experience that blends convenience with luxury,” she says. “This is designed
to be fun, relaxed, and stress-free. The goal is to make the client feel confident, stylish, and truly catered to.”
Travaglini’s expertise was honed on a 15-plus year journey through the fashion world, including internships at prestigious brands like Christian Louboutin and Zac Posen and work with Barneys New York as well as fashion houses Miu Miu and Prada. During that time, she cultivated a deep understanding of luxury styling and curating exceptional collections, which she now leverages when working with clients at The Style Club Palm Beach.
The Style Club also offers a Shop My Closet experience, which maximizes and reinvents existing wardrobes. “The goal is to curate fresh looks from the clothing and accessories you already own,” explains Travaglini. “We do a closet walk-through to identify key pieces and hidden gems that can be restyled. My seamstress is on call to turn that midi into the perfect mini or elevate that jacket into a fabulous vest. If there are any gaps or missing essentials, I’ll suggest key pieces to add to your wardrobe, but the emphasis remains on
making the most of what’s already in your closet.”
With a passion for philanthropy, Travaglini also hosts events to support the community. “The Quantum House is especially dear to my heart,” she says. “I recently hosted a clothing drive and collected gently used pieces from clients’ closets to donate to Quantum House’s resale shop in Jupiter. I’ve also curated a special collection in the store for locals to shop during season, ensuring the donations make a meaningful impact.”
Through it all, Travaglini’s goal is to build long-lasting relationships with her clients and help them perfect their style and feel beautiful and confident. “It’s the connection and trust that really matter to me,” she says. “It’s all about enhancing people’s lives through fashion and delivering an unforgettable experience.” styleclubpalmbeach.com ❖
After testing the waters with various models, luxury home builder Sebastian Smallegange returns to the fine craftsmanship and perfect layout of a center console from Bahama Boatworks
BY GEORGE LABONTE
For a person with a reputation for building the finest quality custom luxury homes in Palm Beach and Martin counties, it’s the small details that separate the good from the exceptional. Back in 1998, when the luxury center console market wasn’t even a thing yet, Sebastian Smallegange of Turtle Beach Construction bought an old Pathfinder bay boat that had been completely transformed and tricked out by Scott Henley, including everything from rigging, wiring, and systems to all cosmetic finish work. The final product left an indelible mark on him.
Some years later, when contemplating his options for the purchase of a larger center console, Smallegange would again cross paths with Henley, who was now a partner at Bahama Boatworks. Smallegange found that the perfectionist attitude Henley had brought to the table years before on his Pathfinder rebuild had been leveled up significantly in the company’s new Bahama 31 model. The fine finish work and attention to detail was evident at every turn, and Smallegange signed on the dotted line.
LENGTH: 38 feet, 1 inch
BEAM: 11 feet
DRAFT: 2 feet, 4 inches
WEIGHT: 8,000 pounds
FUEL: 475 gallons
MAX HP: 1,200 bahamaboatworks.com
An opportunity came up for Smallegange to purchase an even larger boat at a substantial discount—one that is widely considered a premier luxury model. He pulled the trigger and brought the new boat home to his dock in Jupiter. But after more than a year spent putting the vessel through its paces between Jupiter and the Bahamas, disappointment started to set in.
He uncovered design flaws and questionable finish work on his new boat, discovering that many shortcuts had been taken during the construction process. He also noticed that
the model’s step-hull design that is so popular these days didn’t suit him. The nature of a step-hull design typically requires the hull to be moving at a high rate of speed to perform efficiently. After spending much time at sea getting wet and punished in conditions rough enough to force any boat to slow down, it became clear to Smallegange that a traditional bottom design that would stay on plane at lower speeds would be more to his liking. That’s when he settled on the 37-foot model from Bahama Boatworks. Smallegange finds that this vessel’s ability to handle any weather at various speeds, abundance of space for passengers, storage for provisioning extended Bahama excursions, and meticulous attention to detail from top to bottom offers everything he needs. He can’t promise this will be his last “perfect” boat, but after trying other models, he can confidently say that from here on out he’ll “always have a Bahama.”

EXPLORE TWO OF THE CITY’S MOST BELOVED ART-CENTRIC NEIGHBORHOODS
BY DAPHNE NIKOLOPOULOS
The Royal Borough of South Kensington has a long tradition of art and design, with dozens of galleries, art studios, and museums. The giant among the latter, the Victoria & Albert Museum, features the über-popular (and often sold out) Naomi in Fashion exhibition through April 6. The retrospective of Naomi Campbell’s life in fashion spotlights the dresses and accessories the supermodel made famous, including the 12-inch platforms that caused her to trip on the Vivienne Westwood catwalk. vam.ac.uk
London hotels don’t come more classic than The Kensington—or more central to the city’s top attractions. Located on the Queen’s Gate within a short amble of Royal Albert Hall, the V&A, Kensington Palace, and the Natural History Museum, the boutique hotel is charmingly British down to the period fireplaces lit year-round.
Rooms and suites are cozy

cocoons of comfort—beautifully scaled and elegant in every way. Traditional decor (think: toile fabrics, four-poster beds with gilded accents, and marble baths) lends a definitive sense of heritage yet is anything but old-fashioned. Appointed with residential-quality furnishings and art, suites feel like proper London apartments with balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and that most coveted of city amenities—space.
Tradition meets modernity at Town House, a Regency-inspired, sun-washed restaurant offering creative British dining all day. This is the place for The Kensington’s famous afternoon tea in homage to the world’s top artists. The iconic service begins with cocktails (we recommend the Girl with Balloon) and proceeds to a menu of sweets and savories accompanied by rare teas like Jasmine Silver Tip and Single Estate English Breakfast from Malawi. It’s a treat to linger over and a fortifier before an afternoon on the museum circuit. doylecollection.com

There are many reasons to visit Claridge’s, but the most delicious is found behind glamorous Art Deco doors. The entranceway speaks to the hotel’s history as a Jazz Age London institution beloved by the most fashionable members of European society and sets the stage for an elevated dining experience. Amid marble surfaces, leather banquettes, and golden flourishes, servers present contemporary English cuisine reflecting the quintessential flavors but none of the heaviness.
When your black cab pulls up to The Beaumont, you’ll likely notice the steel appendage on the hotel’s facade, a cubist aberration on an otherwise classic structure. What’s that about? The short answer is: art.
The sculpture, the work of British provocateur Antony Gormley, is the exterior of ROOM, Gormley’s ode to darkness. ROOM is, well, a room fully clad in dark oak and decorated with nothing but one simple bed. This is functional art at its best, a sculpture you can inhabit. Although the cave-like space feels austere, it’s meant to invite a meditative pause and a confrontation of self without the distraction of worldly possessions. It’s a beautiful intention, though the claustrophobic may not agree.
Don’t miss Sunday lunch, that most British of traditions. The service includes two or three courses of specialties like roasted Herefordshire sirloin, pea velouté with quail egg, and Norfolk Black Leg chicken with truffle stuffing. Claridge’s Chocolate, which you break with a mini hammer to reveal a brownie and chocolate mousse, is a must even if you don’t think you can manage another bite. Take your time and make an afternoon of it—isn’t that what Sundays are for? claridges.co.uk
Gormley’s masterpiece is the crown jewel of The Beaumont’s remarkably curated art collection, which includes original works by Robert Motherwell, Alexander Calder, Terry Frost, Cornelia Parker, and scores of others. The one that stands out for most guests is Le Maître d’École by Belgian artist René Magritte, since it’s front and center at the Le Magritte Bar. From the lobby to the bathrooms, there is no part of The Beaumont that is not graced by art.
Thanks to a recent renovation, the hotel has unveiled a new wing with 29 rooms and two new private dining rooms. The existing rooms and restaurants have been refurbished with custom furniture and art appointments that enhance the hotel’s storied Art Deco design. Accommodations feel spacious, bespoke, and truly residential, a rarity in London and an asset to glamorous Mayfair. thebeaumont.com ❖

ENTER AS STRANGERS, LEAVE AS FAMILY
Our family restaurant started in 1973 when my grandparents opened their first location. My parents carried on the tradition, and in 1986 ventured out on their own. Though none of us had formal training, passion kept us thriving. My father, our family’s foundation, passed in 2020, but his legacy continues. Today, my husband, mother, and I proudly celebrate 15 years at our current location, with a strong following and a successful catering business.

MEET THE LOCAL ARTIST BEHIND SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR CHILDREN’S FANTASY SERIES
BY PAIGE BOWERS
Tony DiTerlizzi might never have become the acclaimed illustrator he is today had it not been for an art teacher at Stuart’s South Fork High who noticed and nurtured his creative gifts. Back in those days, DiTerlizzi, now 55, says he was a skinny kid who listened to The Cure and didn’t feel like he fit in. He spent a lot of time drawing but wasn’t sure if it was a viable career, so he thought he might eventually pursue a career in marine biology. By senior year, he had taken every art class South Fork had to offer. Many teachers noticed his talent, but it was one particular art teacher, Tom Wetzl, who showed him that he could have a future as an illustrator.
“Mr. Wetzl wanted to do this one-on-one class with me, where I’d figure out a semester-long project that would become the crown jewel of my portfolio,” DiTerlizzi recalls. “I decided I would redesign all the characters from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I modeled the Mad Hatter after Elton John, did an anime Alice, and made the Caterpillar kind of Muppet-y. I called the book Views from Wonderland Mr. Wetzl saw it and said, ‘Wow!’ Then other people who saw it told me it was cool too. I was 17 at the time and realized then that I wanted to make books for a living.”
Now a best-selling author and illustrator of many popular fantasy/adventure books, DiTerlizzi is having a (really big) moment as of late. This past April, he watched one of the fantasy series he co-created—The Spiderwick Chronicles find a new generation of fans when it was released as a TV series and quickly became the most-watched debut on Roku of all time. Ten weeks later, the first season of his sci-fi trilogy WondLa debuted on AppleTV+ to rave reviews. “It has been such a surreal and strange experience,” DiTerlizzi says of the whirlwind release schedule.
DiTerlizzi grew up on County Line Road on the Palm Beach/ Martin County border, attending Hobe Sound Elementary and Murray Middle School before South Fork High School. His father designed engines for Pratt & Whitney, and his mom stayed home to take care of him and his two siblings. She

would often engage her kids with arts and crafts; DiTerlizzi vividly remembers his mother painting his bedroom a light sky blue, which he later embellished with dinosaurs on the sly.
“I saw it as a big canvas, but Mom was upset because she had just painted it,” he recalls. “She said, ‘Wait till your father gets home!’ My dad came home and taped a big piece of butcher paper on the wall and told me, ‘Okay, now you can draw.’ So I created a big prehistoric scene.”
He continued drawing throughout his youth, and then that pivotal interaction with Mr. Wetzl took place. When he finished high school, he attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and excitedly pursued a career as an illustrator after
“ I’M GETTING BACK
BOOKS AND MIDDLEGRADE BOOKS... I HAVE A LOT MORE STORIES TO TELL.”
graduating in 1992. At the time, most of the job opportunities for illustrators were in editorial work, so he sent his drawings out to various magazines and publishers. He didn’t get any response, so he moved back home to his parents’ house, feeling dejected.
A few months later, he was catching up with some old high school buddies, playing Dungeons & Dragons, when one of those friends mentioned that his art was perfect for that type of work. On a whim, DiTerlizzi sent a few of his pieces to the franchise’s publisher— and they hired him to illustrate gaming booklets for the advanced D&D box set, Dragon Mountain. “At that point, I really thought I was on my way,” he says.
After working for D&D on various projects for a few years, he decided that if he really wanted to make it, he needed to move to New York City. So, in 1996, he headed for the big city.
His girlfriend at the time, Angela (who became his wife in 2000), was helping to open a new MAC Cosmetics store in SoHo, and one day she was doing the makeup of an editor from Scholastic Books. Recalls DiTerlizzi: “Angela worked her and got her number, and I called immediately.” A few days later, he went to Scholastic, where he eventually met with an editorial assistant who liked his work. One month later, that assistant (Kevin
Lewis) became an editor at Simon & Schuster and helped DiTerlizzi with his first children’s book, Jimmy Zangwow’s Out-of-This-World Moon Pie Adventure, which was published in 2000.
His success soared from there. He won a Zena Sutherland Award for writing and illustrating Ted in 2001, and another for illustrating Mary Howitt’s classic poem The Spider and the Fly in 2002 (which also earned a Caldecott Medal and made him a New York Times best-selling author).
Then came the juggernaut middle-grade series The Spiderwick
Inspiring illustrators: “Growing up, we had a large coffee table book of Norman Rockwell’s covers for The Saturday Evening Post, which was a treasure chest of artistic inspiration. In the late 1970s, Mom bought Brian Froud and Alan Lee’s Faeries, and my mind was blown by their lifelike depictions of the denizens of Fae.”
Favorite children’s book as a kid: “Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak remains the perfect picture book. I still have fond memories of Mom reading The House at Pooh Corner and how far off and magical the Hundred Acre Wood seemed to me.”
If you were a fantasy character, you would be: “Peter Pan.
Chronicles, which he co-created with Holly Black. When the series was published (over 2003-2009), it sold over 20 million copies in more than 30 countries and was adapted as both a multiplatform video game and a feature film (released by Paramount Pictures in 2009). Shortly after, he had another hit with the sci-fi series WondLa. More children’s books followed, including Star Wars: The Adventures of Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight in 2014, The Broken Ornament in 2018, and A Very Cranky Book in 2023.
Incredibly, both The Spiderwick Chronicles and WondLa had a resurgence this year, with both being rebooted as television series. The Spiderwick Chronicles on Roku stars big names like Christian Slater, while stars like Brad Garrett and Teri Hatcher lend their voices to the animated WondLa At press time, WondLa season two was scheduled to hit AppleTV+ in early 2025.
In the meantime, DiTerlizzi is keeping busy as always, going back and forth between his home base in Amherst, Massachusetts and his hometown of Jupiter. In October, he was in town for our photo shoot, squeezing in some time with his mom and sister before heading up to St. Petersburg for the Florida Art Education Association’s annual conference. As a guest speaker at the conference, he says, he wanted to let local teachers know how inspirational they can be to young artists, just as Mr. Wetzl was to him.
And more books are definitely on the way. Says DiTerlizzi: “I’m getting back to writing chapter books and middle-grade books. That’s where I like telling stories. And I have a lot more stories to tell.” diterlizzi.com ❖
He’s fearless, can fly, is friends with fairies and mermaids, and seems immortal—that’s a pretty good package.”
Describe your art style: “Imaginative and fantastical, though inspired by nature”
Local eats: “My wife and I have been eating at Dune Dog since it opened in the 1990s.”
Top spot for a nature fix: “I’ve hiked, camped, biked, canoed, ridden horseback, and everything else you can do at Jonathan Dickinson State Park since I was a kid.
I love the various environments within the park and its storied history.” —Michelle Lee Ribeiro
Tavolena Chef Michael Rolchigo and his wife, Lisa, combine ancestral recipes and creative design for a fun and festive holiday
BY VALERIE STAGGS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BENJAMIN RUSNAK
In the back of Jupiter restaurant Tavolena is a small private room where patrons can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine under the watchful eye of generations of family members, captured in black-and-white photographs around the room. Parties of up to eight gather around the central table and feast on comforting foods like homemade pasta, oversize meatballs, and savory signature sauces. What they may not know is that the inspiration for this unique restaurant came from the very table they are seated at.
Tavolena’s owner, Chef Michael Rolchigo, gazes fondly at the table and reminisces about a childhood spent in his grandmother’s kitchen in Utica, New York. “I learned how to make fresh pasta and roll my first meatball at that table,” he says. “[My grandmother] was my first teacher, and she was my best teacher, both about cuisine and about life.” When his grandmother passed away in 1999, Michael’s mother asked if there was anything of hers that
he wanted to keep. His response was quick: “The first thing out of my mouth was, ‘I want the table.’”
At the time, he wasn’t sure what he would do with the table, but when he opened Tavolena in October 2023, he decided it was the perfect opportunity to take the legacy his grandmother had left him and share it with the community.
Nestled in the back of Seagrape Square shopping plaza off East Indiantown Road, Tavolena is the definition of a hidden gem. In just over a year since it opened, it has become a favorite of many local residents, and the reason for its popularity is readily apparent to anyone who has had the pleasure of eating there. The menu features specialties from the upstate New York region combined with Michael’s grandmother’s recipes, including the Sunday Italian Feast. “My grandmother served it every Sunday,” he says of the enormous plate of meatballs, sausage, and boneless pork ribs cooked in a Parma tomato sauce that is simmered for eight hours and served over ziti.
The dessert menu is equally memorable. Patrons are hardpressed to choose between Lena’s Famous Almond Paste Cookies and the Unholy Cannoli “Sicilian Style.” Happily, almost everyone goes home with leftovers.
A graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Michael earned degrees in both culinary and pastry arts, graduating in 1996 with honors. He first honed his skills at the award-winning Gramercy Tavern in
New York City, then at The Frog and the Peach and The Grand Summit Hotel in New Jersey. Tired of the cold winters, he moved to South Florida in 2001, where he built a reputation as a top executive chef at the Players Club in Wellington, then at Jupiter Island Grill.
In 2013, he struck out on his own, opening Krave in Tequesta. After selling the restaurant in 2017, he took a break from the business and pursued another dream, bottling and selling his own hot sauces. Then he returned to the restaurant scene with Tavolena. “I’m going back to my roots, back to Italian and how I was raised,” he says of his latest eatery.
His partner at home and at work is his wife of eight years, Lisa. An accomplished interior designer, Lisa has a unique creative vision that can be seen in the distinctive design of Tavolena. “I had the color scheme in my head, but then it evolved into an entity of its own,” she says of the restaurant’s Roman-themed decor. She points out the herringbone pattern on the bar tile, the snake sconces on the walls, and the greyhound dog sculptures on either side of the bar, all elements of Roman heritage. “I wanted to make it
warm and inviting but also make it a ‘wow,’ like when you open the doors you are transported to Rome.”
Lisa has a knack for making dining a memorable experience. A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, she ran her own interior design business in Chicago before moving to Jupiter in 1990. After taking time off to raise her daughters, she opened a tabletop specialty store called Trovare in Jupiter in 2013 (she closed the store in 2017). The shop backed up to Jupiter Island Grill, which is where she met Michael. She was there dining with her daughters, and the chef stopped by their table. “It was love at first sight,” says Lisa. The couple married in 2016.
Lisa says she has always had a passion for setting a table, which makes the couple’s partnership a perfect match. When they have dinner parties, Michael does the cooking
and Lisa creates the tablescape. She loves a good theme and has created designs around Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Yellowstone (the TV show), and Halloween, using everything from jewelry and ornaments to dragons and dry ice.
For holiday dinners at home in Jupiter, Michael says he draws inspiration from his grandmother. “I like to put a creative spin on traditional foods my grandparents made for the holidays,” he says. Some of the dishes he typically makes: prime beef Chateaubriand, black truffle potato pavé, roasted root vegetable medley, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, insalata di mare (scallops, shrimp, calamari, and mussels with
a Bloody Mary sauce), clams casino with a bacon-based stuffing, and Saint-André Brie crostini. His cocktail of choice for holiday dinners? Portuguese sangria, a favorite of his grandfather, who was from Madeira Island. Desserts typically include an assortment of Italian cookies, including Lena’s Famous Almond Paste Cookies (named for his Italian grandmother) and homemade gelato flavored with fresh ingredients like basil and coconut. “Both of my grandmothers were amazing bakers, so cookies are a big part of every year’s holiday menu,” says Michael, who will be celebrating the holidays this year at home with family and friends. He will have some help in the kitchen from his son Tyler, head waiter at Tavolena and a talented chef in his own right, and Chef Marco Ortega, who works alongside Michael at the restaurant.
Lisa, as usual, will design a gorgeous tablescape for the holiday feast. This year, she draws inspiration from the mythical Roman goddess Salacia, “divinity of the sea.” “I want the table setting to reflect the beauty and gifts of living in our oceanside town,” she says.
After the holidays, Michael and Lisa look forward to celebrating their second year of business at Tavolena, where they recently expanded with Tavolena Sandwich and Bakery next door. At press time, the bakery was slated to open this month, serving fresh-baked breads and cookies, pastries, and signature sandwiches.
“Starting all over again [in the restaurant business] after five years, the response has been amazing,” says Michael. “It’s great to hear people say that they can’t wait to come back this season.” 185 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter; tavolena.com; 561.972.7228 ❖

Wellness is the focus of the new luxury Amrit Ocean Resort on Singer Island, which opened this past May. And the same holds true for its flagship restaurant, TULA. The eatery—whose name means “balance” in Sanskrit—has quickly become a haven for those seeking an opulent dining experience with healthy, mindful fare.
TULA’s menu is rooted in the 70/30 principle—meaning Executive Chef Simon Apollonio uses ingredients that are 70 percent plant-based and 30 percent animal-based— and inspired by “The Blue Zones” coined by author and explorer Dan Buettner. Buettner identified specific geographic areas across the globe known for longevity
and health (The Blue Zones) and found that in all of these areas, eating a diet based on local, whole foods is a common way of life, and ultimately, a key factor in residents’ long lives. “We try to honor the traditions of healthful eating that have been around for thousands of years,” says Apollonio, who hails from Concesio in northern Italy. “In Italy, that’s just how we eat. I believe, if you follow the earth and the human spirit, you will be healthy.”
To that end, Apollonio’s nutritious menu includes entrées like seafood beetroot risotto and garbanzos estofados with coconut milk curry, and classic dishes
like Angus short ribs. The “medicinal” mushroom chowder is especially personal to Chef Apollonio. “It holds a special place in my heart as one of my ultimate comfort dishes,” he says. “It brings back
memories of my grandmother, who used to prepare a version of this soup for me when I was a child. The earthy blend of mushrooms, paired with the nutty chew of farro, carries the same warmth and comfort I remember from those childhood meals.”
They also serve a range of cold-pressed juices and smoothies, including a green detox juice, a turmeric carrot juice, and a Florida tropical smoothie with strawberry, banana, organic almond butter, and coconut milk. And their wine list, which features Old and New World vintages with an emphasis on organic, sustainable, and biodynamic wines, was recently honored with Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence.
Chef Apollonio’s healthful creations are enjoyed in a calming environment— neutral tones, warm wood accents, and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean ooze tranquility. “The design is minimalistic to leave the focus on wellness and the ocean,” says the chef. “Using organic materials helps connect us to the earth with the way we eat and the way we live.”
The entire space was designed around the ocean, so guests can enjoy the beautiful views no matter where they are in the restaurant. Floor-toceiling windows surround the indoor dining room, and a giant mirror behind the bar reflects the ocean waves. Of course, outside on the grand terrace, guests also enjoy stunning views of the ocean as well as the resort’s pool.
At TULA, Apollonio has proven that healthy food can be, and is, truly delicious. Says the chef: “You can have your vegetables and still have fun—and we create a lot more fun with vegetables!”

In September, Ryan Witkowski—owner of Stadium Grill in Abacoa and Blue Pointe Bar and Grill in Tequesta—expanded his portfolio to Hobe Sound with the opening of Sophia’s. Located in the former space of Kork (and then DelBar), Sophia’s offers “contemporary American cuisine with high-end flair,” says executive director Robyn Pizzichiello, and is named for Witkowski’s youngest daughter.
The restaurant is designed to be a place where families feel at home, like they’re sitting in their own backyard with family and friends enjoying a good meal, says Pizzichiello. The outdoor space was fitted with a tiki hut to shade the seating area and a stage for live music. Inside, the preexisting wine cellar was removed to create space for a private room with a 65-inch television that can accommodate a party of 20 for special occasions. There are a total of three spaces that can be reserved for private parties, all named for Witkowki’s other children— Brooks’ Boardroom, Harper’s Terrace, and Charlotte’s Courtyard.
Guests familiar with Witkowski’s other eateries will spot some menu crossover, but other dishes—like the shrimp pesto flatbread with grape tomatoes, pesto sauce, mozzarella, and shaved Parmesan—are unique to Sophia’s. Some of the more popular dishes are the two- and three-tier seafood towers, beef tenderloin sliders,
sweet potato–encrusted grouper, and surf and turf (an 8-ounce filet and a 6-ounce lobster tail).
If you can squeeze in dessert, order a slice of vibrant orange Creamsicle cake. “It’s a bright orange and fluffy cake that’s made with Florida oranges and Florida orange juice,” says Pizzichiello.
On the cocktail menu, the drinks pay homage to the area, named for streets and significant places in Hobe Sound, like the Laurel Lane Margarita, Blowing Rocks Mojito, and Pettway Punch. The menu also features two mocktails, the Mock Mojito and the Watermelon Breeze, for those who abstain.
Drinks, flatbreads, and appetizers are half-off during happy hour (Monday through Friday, 4 to 6 p.m.). And if you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate the holidays, Sophia’s will host a special Christmas Eve dinner and a New Year’s Eve party with live music, a four-course prix fixe menu, and an open bar. 11970 SE Dixie Hwy., Hobe Sound; sophiashobesound.com; 772.245.8182 ❖
