hhh, December. It’s that wondrous time of year again, when city streets twinkle with lights, Santa clones are spotted at pub crawls, and jingly tunes seem to be streaming from the sky, making even the most menial everyday chores feel jolly.

Christmas is back, y’all.... Are you ready for it?

I think it’s important to acknowledge, though, that not everyone may be feeling the magic during the holiday season. And that’s perfectly okay. Maybe you suffered a loss last year. Maybe this COVID thing is still affecting your life in a negative way. Maybe finances aren’t what they used to be and gifting has been downsized. Or maybe you find yourself having to spend the holidays alone this year, for whatever reason. All of that is A-OK. You don’t have to spend a ton of money or attend a slew of parties to celebrate. Find your own joy, whether that be exploring a new local spot with your pet, reaching out to a loved one for a warm conversation, cooking yourself a delicious meal, volunteering to help other people or animals, or planning your next big adventure.

Be your own magic.

can’t believe 2021 is coming to an end. The good news is that many of us will be traveling more over the holidays and going to more festive parties and events compared to last year’s smaller gatherings. The days of staying away from everyone are over, and it’s such a relief getting back to some normalcy.

Our December issue is filled with ideas on where to travel this winter season. Perhaps you’ll become inspired to make your vacation plans. I am looking forward to reading about some of the cities and luxury ski resorts on these pages. My husband and I always host Thanksgiving and Christmas at our home with our family. While we haven’t made vacation plans yet, I intend to take at least a long weekend away over this winter season.

As we look to the new year, the January and February issues will feature our “Home Resource Guide” special advertising section, with plenty of ideas on where to shop for the home. As I mentioned before, many of us have taken a more vested interest in remodeling and redecorating. I am done with most of our inside renovations, so now it’s on to creating a new backyard and updating our landscaping. I would love to hear your recommendations on whom to call on for gaining some creative ideas. Feel free to email me with suggestions.

lorida landscapes are known for their vivid color—but award-winning fine art photographer Clyde Butcher has made a name for himself capturing breathtaking images of the Sunshine State in shades of gray. This month, the artist showcases some of his work at the MidFlorida Credit Union Event Center in Port St. Lucie. The traveling exhibition—Living Waters and the Florida Landscape—will be at the center through December 23 before moving to the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance Gallery in Fort Pierce (January 7 to 31). The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast will host its seventh annual Santa Paws Holiday Pooch Plunge beginning at 10 a.m., including music, food trucks, a 50/50 raffle, selfies with Santa, and more. It’s the perfect way to spend the day with your family—but don’t forget to bring your pooch because this event is really about him!

There are 45-minute swim sessions available to dogs who want to splash in the park ($10/ dog, pre-registration required). Guests are encouraged to bring a toy, treats, or food for House of Hope’s pet donation drive. ort Pierce is now home to a memorial with national significance. U.S. Representative Stephanie Murphy co-led an amendment to the FY22 National Defense Authorization Act that officially designates the memorial at the Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce a national memorial site. The U.S. House of Representatives approved the bill this fall, helping to ensure our nation’s warriors are never forgotten. The museum—which exists on the training grounds of the Frogmen, the original Navy combat divers—preserves the history of the SEALs with exhibits that inform and educate on their role in protecting our country. Visitors can check out unique weapons, watercraft, and combat vehicles used by SEALs, including a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The museum’s memorial wall was added in 2009, and the memorial garden and living beach were introduced this past May. navysealmuseum.org

History Preserved REMEMBERING THE LEGACY OF A FORT PIERCE LEGEND

W

illie Daniels, one of the original Highwaymen who made national history with his art, passed away in September after a long illness. Born in 1951, Daniels quickly made a name for himself among the Florida Highwaymen, a group of 26 self-taught African-American artists who painted vivid scenes of historic Florida and sold them from the trunks of their Willie Daniels cars for $25 to $35 apiece—often with the paint still wet.

“In the 1990s, the entrepreneurs earned the name ‘the Highwaymen’ for the way they sold door-to-door and along the side of the road, especially along the eastern coast of Florida on U.S. 1 and A1A,” explains AJ Brown, Daniels’ god-niece and a second-generation

painter carrying on the legacy of the Highwaymen. Although he was a successful painter for more than 50 years, Daniels lived what Brown describes as “a meager lifestyle,” and his generosity with his art afforded thousands of antique dealers, authors, and friends the opportunity to own one of his nostalgic creations. An Equestrian Dream MARITIME ARTIST AND FORMER PRO WAKEBOARDER MONIQUE RICHTER HAS A PASSION FOR HORSES THAT HAS LED HER TO JUPITER FARMS TO OPEN A FACILITY SHE HOPES WILL HELP CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES place in the 2006 National Championship for the women’s open division and continued on a decade-long career in the sport. In 2015, however, she suffered a broken toe that forced her to retire from the sport. She switched gears, embarking on a career in boat transport in St. Thomas, eventually becoming a captain.

Richter had also shown talent in her early years in another area: art. She began studying boat exteriors and, believing she could make them look better, she gave it a shot. Just like that, the multifaceted Richter with mini horses Muffin and Lil Buck (in foreground)

Floridian was on to her next big success.

Mixing modern, faux teakwood painting with Old World gold and platinum leaf lettering, she creates smashing exteriors on big-ticket sportfishing boats for the likes of Johnny Depp and Jimmy Buffet, as well as a variety of international boatbuilders including Viking Yachts. She works for 53 builders in total and paints around 20 boats a month.

But her love of horses never went away.

She longed for the feeling she used to have as a young girl riding in Davie, and last summer, she decided to do something about it. She bought 10 acres in Jupiter Farms with the intention of transforming it into Blue Ridge Farms, her own personal horse farm—but with purpose. “I have made enough money painting boats to live my dream of being around horses and helping others understand them,” she says.

She plans to use the farm and her horses to help children with disabilities. On weekends, the property will be open to the public, allowing kids to pet and interact with the horses. Once kids become comfortable enough, they can ride her miniature horses and hopefully develop fulfilling friendships with the equines. Richter plans to offer more intense horse therapy in the future. “I hope to implement equine therapy to promote children’s mental and physical health, but I need to wait a while until everything is

loved riding horses as a child,” says Monique Richter, who recently relocated to Jupiter Farms from her hometown of Fort Lauderdale. The longtime professional wakeboarder always dreamed of opening her own facility, and now that dream is coming true.

“My parents sent me to horse camp in Davie during summers, and I also did dressage,” recalls Richter. But her life turned from horses to the water at age 16.

running smoothly before we begin,” she says. “My horse trainer will have expertise in equine therapy. I also want to breed mini horses and continue to implement more interaction with children and horses on a beginner’s level.”

Currently, Blue Ridge Farms includes Richter’s 3,000-square-foot home, plus a 16-stall barn and a mini barn for her three beloved miniature horses. She rescued two and saved one from slaughter—and she is thrilled that they have become part of her life. “Mini horses live to be 50, and the

bigger ones can live to age 30,” she says.

“It’s wonderful! I want them around for a long time.” She has enlisted the help of local horse expert Alex Bambauer to care for the horses while she is away painting boats.

She plans to board other horses during the dressage season and will also have a wedding venue on the property. The oak tree–covered property is still under construction but, says Richter, “there will be lots of trees, a walk-through archway with vines, a 30-foot fountain, and we already have a lake on the property.”

“It is so beautiful here,” she continues.

“I have a tropical theme and am using black and white for the colors in honor of the horses.” She is also redesigning the paddocks so the horses will be able to come right up to her house and peep through the large windows that overlook the farm. “I want to see the horses every day,” she says. “I love Jupiter Farms. I found my happy place.”

henever he finds time for a break from caring for pets at his busy Stuart Sound Animal Hospital, Dr. Chris Steers’ mind invariably wanders toward the water and fishing. Although formerly the owner of a pair of boats—one offshore center console and a second back country boat—the idea of having a single vessel to serve two purposes was intriguing.

During a boat show visit, Steers had a conversation with the owner of Stuart-based R&R Boatworks that set his mind in motion. R&R is a custom builder of the popular Conch Boats line of

center consoles and at the time was in the development stage of a new hybrid bay/offshore model that might be ideal for this dual-purpose boat that Steers had been imagining.

The 25 Bay Boat is custom-built in various configurations to suit each owner’s needs. For Steers, a second station was a must for sight fishing, and his one-of-a-kind metal work was designed for easy access and features steering and controls along with a 7-inch Simrad EVO 3 MFD slave unit to work in conjunction with a pair of 12-inch Simrad units mounted at the helm below. A pair of 40-gallon live wells were added for live bait fishing, a go-to technique in South Florida. For power, up to 450-HP can be added to the Conch 25, but Steers chose a 350-HP Mercury Verado that easily pushes the Conch past the 50 mph mark. A pair of 8-inch Power Pole Blades were color-matched to the boat, and a 36V

loridians have it made when it comes to sand, sea, and surf—but for snow, we have to travel (who’s complaining?). Aspen tops many a winter bucket list, but its chill little sister, Snowmass—elevation 8,209 feet—sits just around the corner.

The gold standard of ski mountains, Aspen and Snowmass share terrain in the Roaring Fork Valley, making the scenery just as pictureperfect as the skiing. In Snowmass, however, the vibe is more laid-back: Rather than a ritzy reservation to see and be seen, après-ski here looks like playing games on an ice-skating rink (skate rentals are free!) or swinging by the s’mores cart and finding a communal firepit at which to toast your treat.

Despite the regularly single-digit temperatures of Colorado high country, the environment of Snowmass is warm and welcoming.

WINTER SCENE: Snow-covered spires and cobblestone streets turn Zürich into a magical scene each winter. In early winter, the city really comes alive with its twinkling Christmas markets. Highlights include Christkindlimarkt at Zürich Main Station, a 140-stall indoor market whose centerpiece is a 32-foot-tall Christmas tree decorated with thousands of sparkling Swarovski crystals, and Christmas Market Dörfli in the Old Town’s Niederdorf quarter. At the open-air winter village, you’ll find artisanal crafts, plus traditional, cheesy Swiss treats such as fondue and raclette. Even just

walking around the city puts you in the holiday spirit, as many major city streets are illuminated with colorful lights throughout the season. “I wanted to create a setting that felt like Florida but with a bohemian vibe that didn’t feel beachy,” says designer Baylee Knipe of Baylee Deyon Design. On the backyard patio overlooking a preserve teeming with wildlife like birds, raccoons, squirrels, and the occasional bobcat, Knipe hung golden, arabesque-shaped ornaments in glittery mesh from the pergola above the outdoor dining table. She dressed the table with an ivory faux fur runner from Home Goods and accented it with a mélange of glass and ceramic trees, deer-shaped tea lights, bunches of pampas grass, and glass pillars filled with loose gold and silver bells and twinkling LED lights. White plates with “Merry Christmas” motifs are topped with silver and gold-starred napkins tied with eucalyptus rings; gold flatware rests upon dried, bleached palm fronds. Guests can ease back into chairs with accent pillows textured with pom-poms and spirited embroidery like “falalala.” As a finishing

touch, Knipe tied a pine wreath lettered with the word “Joy” to the backdoor of her home: “Every time I think of the holidays, that’s the word that always comes to mind,” she says.

Jennifer Arteaga, Jennifer Lynn Interior Design, Jupiter jenniferlynnid.com “Our formal dining room is a blend of contemporary and antique treasures that my boyfriend and I have purchased over the years,” says Jennifer Arteaga of Jennifer Lynn Interior Design.

“It drove the design of our table, which has a kind of tartan meets Ralph Lauren feel, so I can’t really put anything beachy or modern with it.” After covering the dining room table with a simple white tablecloth and blue chargers from Tide & Table, Arteaga layered on her own antique salad and dinner plates (takeaways from an antique market in Chicago) with plaid napkins and Christmas ornaments tied with blue and green ribbons.

A mixed pine garland from Palm Beach Wholesale runs the length of the table and oscillates between crystal glassware from Ralph Lauren, nutcracker dolls, loose ornaments, pine cones, and candles displayed in varying heights and set on gold, navy, and pewter stands. The designer also created the breathtaking floral arrangements with Asiatic lilies, astilbe, Dutch hydrangeas, podocarpus, ranunculus, and red and white roses, as well as the antique sideboard nearby. “I adore fresh flowers, lovely dinnerware, and shimmering candlelight,” she says. “Together, they make the perfect holiday table.”

Chelsey Neuhaus, C Studio Interiors & Design, Tequesta cstudio-id.com “I grew up in Chicago, where the winters can be brutal, so to me Christmas is about cozying up next to a roaring fireplace,” says Chelsey Neuhaus of C Studio Interiors & Design. “It’s also the one time of year I don’t want to feel like I’m on the beach.” To transform her clients’ formal dining room into a warm and cozy space to gather with friends and family for the holidays, Neuhaus set the trestle table with a runner made from layers of taupe linens and sheer sage-colored fabric finished with satin and velvet ribbons at either end. A centerpiece crafted from a faux eucalyptus garland from Stalk Market boasts clusters of artificial berries, allium globe flowers, and traditional pine stems for an organic touch. The designer chose warm brass elements like polished cutlery, trimmed glass chargers, and both new and antique candlesticks. Decorative beaded napkin rings with brass berry details add a festive touch.
