Cheers to October!

en years ago, I spent a chunk of time in Germany, mainly in the city of Munich. Now, for a lot of people, the highlight of that excursion might have been attending Oktoberfest. But while I was still there in September (when Oktoberfest actually is, despite its name), I left a day before the festival was to begin. I know, I know... But I’m more of a wine drinker than a beer lover. Anyway, the point of this story is that I did get to see everything being set up (check out the photo below), and I was pretty blown away by just how big of a deal barley is to so many people. Here in South Florida, people also love their ale, and the craft beer scene is thriving on the Treasure Coast. Beginning on page 40, we highlight all of the breweries in the area where you can pop by for a pint and sip some of the best. I’m also excited to introduce you to some of the crafty people living in our area—artisans who create some truly wonderful products. Scotty McAllister uses a chainsaw to carve beautiful animals out of driftwood he collects from swamps, while cover model Nella Fusco brews batches of kombucha (an effervescent, healthful tea) up in Fort Me at the entrance to Oktoberfest in Munich Pierce. Learn more about them and more unique creators in “Meet the Makers” (page 26). You’ll also find many of our regular columns—like the Character profile on teen siblings Audrey and Peter Foley, who sail competively all over the world, and the Wanderlust travel piece on a staycation gem in Palm Beach. Plus, we’ve put together some vintage fall fashion looks I think you’ll love (shot at the Elliott Museum, in front of its cool classic car exhibit). wo thousand twenty crawled by like a slug, but it feels like 2021 is racing by like a hare. I can’t believe we are already in October, and the new year is right around the corner. Even though we naively expected to be done with the pandemic by now, it seems we’ve all settled into some new kind of normal. With most people vaccinated, and hopefully the Delta variant subsiding, we can look forward to the fall and the holidays. I know I’m ready for our Florida fall festivities and eventually some cooler weather! I am also excited for charity events to start up over the next few months. In this issue, we bring you our Charity Datebook, a compilation of Martin County and Palm Beach County charities in need of our support. With some events being postponed, however, we encourage you to check in with the charities to see if their fundraising events are still on. Additionally, consider making a direct monetary donation to your favorite cause so that they can continue their mission in these challenging times. Throughout the years, Stuart Magazine has supported numerous local organizations and causes. We would love to hear from you about how we might be able to help make a difference at your organization or special event. We are the heart of this community, and we all win when we serve. Curtain CALL A fter more than a year-long hiatus, The Lyric Theatre finally makes its season debut this month with a slew of exciting performances. “It has truly been a labor of love putting together this upcoming season,” says President and CEO Kia Fontaine. “We will be adding more performances, events, and experiences as the performing arts industry comes out of darkness.” With the reopening, guests will enjoy a newly renovated theater thanks to what Fontaine calls an “anonymous backstage angel waiting in the wings”—a gift of $500,000 that

was donated to jumpstart the renovations. As a result, she says, the Lyric will be outfitted with “the latest technology for the safety and comfort of patrons, volunteers, artists, and staff.” Among the repairs are a new roof, restoration of the marquees, upgraded air conditioning units with state-of-the-art air purification systems, new signage to replicate the historic “blade” sign of the Lyric’s past, and more. Florida Oceanographic Center’s new EcoCenter highlights local conservation

If you’re interested in becoming a marine life steward or learning about environmental conservation, look no further than the Florida Oceanographic Center. The 57-acre marine life nature center on Hutchinson Island offers daily educational programs and hands-on learning for all ages and recently unveiled its new Ocean EcoCenter as part of the first phase of its multimillion-dollar capital expansion. After immersing yourself in the 2,000 gallons of aquariums teeming with local marine life, be sure to check out the center’s cool special exhibits: Estuaries features a life-like display of mangroves weaving in and out of aquarium tanks, mimicking the Indian River Lagoon. And Life Along the Shore replicates Bathtub Beach and its vibrant ecosystem. Also worth noting is the Exploration Lab, which acts as a space to host events, summer camp, and soon, family-friendly activities like interactive puzzles, games, and more. “With this new expansion, we hope to provide locals with a sense of shared community purpose,” says Executive Director Mark Perry. “Our oceans and waterways are a big part of what makes the Treasure Coast a treasured place, and part of the story we hope our Ocean EcoCenter conveys is that our actions matter, and how we treat our environment matters.” Next up in the capital expansion is the Frances Langford Visitor’s Center renovation, which will include expanding the footprint of the gift shop. floridaocean.org —Melissa Puppo

Sailing Siblings STUART TEENS PETER AND AUDREY FOLEY SHARE A PASSION FOR SAILING COMPETITIVELY ALL AROUND THE WORLD—TOGETHER eing born in Miami’s Mercy Hospital overlooking Biscayne Bay may have given the Foley siblings an affinity for the water. But years later, a two-week summer camp at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo stimulated their interest in sailing and, soon after, competing. “I love the competitiveness of sailing,” says Peter, 18, who is lauded for his intellect, precision, strategy, speed, and tactics on the water. “I am a natural. I build off of talent, and I love sailing. When it’s cold and windy, I go out.” His younger sister Audrey, 15, is fearless on windy seas and shares the same passion as her brother. “Sailing makes me feel independent, and competing allows me to focus all of my interests at once,” she says. “People are amazed that I am young and brave and sail in gnarly winds and storms. But I love it!”

Today, the Stuart-based Pine School students spend as much time as possible sailing around the world as a team tackling competitive events. They often race together as members of the United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA); since 2015, they have qualified as members and competed all over the world, including places like Spain, Belgium, and Bermuda. The Foley siblings have attended more than 75 regattas in 30 countries on five continents and have also won a few championships, including the 2019 C420 Junior Olympic Sailing Festival in Jensen Beach and Peter’s first-place win in the 2018 International Optimist Regatta in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. They somehow manage to balance their sailing competitions with various high school activities. “We intend to keep improving our sailing, doing schoolwork, and entering competitions when we are on break,” says Peter, who notes that they finished sixth in the i420 North American Championship Regatta in Miami last year and, this past July, competed in the 420 World Championships in San Remo, Italy, for the very first time. The first-generation sailors have lived all over Florida and in Chicago. Two years ago, after their father, a financial adviser, opened an office in Palm Beach Gardens, the

family—including their mom, who manages their sailing careers—bought a home in Stuart. Not far from their dad’s work, it is also close to the U.S. Sailing Center of Martin County in Jensen Beach. “We both like the peacefulness of Martin County, and in addition to the Sailing Center competitions, we sail our family’s armada of boats around here,” says Peter. Over the years, the duo has sailed boats like the I420, C420, HS420, Snipe, Laser, 29er, RS Feva, RS Venture, Hobie Cat, and Sunfish. They have also trained a great deal on the family’s 8-foot Optimist. While they claim to get along 95 percent

of the time, there are natural spills and chills during the excitement of competition. “If one of us fails to do something [right], we get upset with each other,” says Peter. “It’s hard not to fight, but we’re always civil.” Audrey agrees: “Things happen so fast when we’re sailing, it’s tough to keep up the pace. But when we are out there, we are partners.” The Foleys are considered by their peers to be among the best youth sailors in North America. They started their careers as preteens, sailing in the big U.S. regattas like Newport, Rhode Island; Marina del Rey, California; and Lake Forest, Illinois.

From there, they tackled international waters, where they were immersed in new cultures and met diverse people who have since become friends. “Traveling has given us new perspectives and experiences,” says Audrey, who headed to Ireland in August to race in the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Youth World Championships after finishing up the Worlds in Italy. “We have bonded with so many different people around the world. I see them every year and now realize that the world is a small place.” Locally, both Foleys will continue to participate in varsity sailing as part of their Pine

School activities. Peter won Pine’s Male Athlete of the Year Award for 2020-2021 (he also plays tennis, golf, and basketball). Audrey, who likes to play golf and paint when she’s not sailing, was honored at Pine with a 2021 Sportsmanship Award. In coming months, the siblings will continue pursuing their passion for competitive sailing. Wherever their dreams may take them, both intend to utilize the memories they make along the way to become better human beings. As Peter so beautifully puts it: “The lessons I have learned in sailing will continue to guide me to be the best person I can.” ❖

History REPEATS A PALM BEACH LANDMARK IS TRANSFORMED INTO A DESIGN ICON FOR A NEW GENERATION b y D A P H N E N I KO L O P O U L O S

ince opening its doors in late 2020, the White Elephant Palm Beach has become a modern classic. It’s not because of its hip vibe or design-forward aesthetic, but rather because it honors a significant part of Palm Beach heritage even as it reimagines it for a new era. Before it was acquired by New England Development, the 1924-built property— originally a landmark hotel servicing Colonel E.R. Bradley’s gambling casino—was an aging architectural gem. NED chairman (and part-time Palm Beacher) Stephen Karp saw potential in its terraces, arcades, and outdoor staircases and immediately envisioned a sister hotel to NED’s White Elephant Nantucket. Elkus Manfredi Architects, specialists in restoring historic

properties, transformed the original Mediterranean Revival structure into a 32-key boutique hotel with a residential feeling, down to the thoughtfully curated art. Although the architecture is classic, it feels anything but dated thanks to a host of contemporary counterpoints. Elevated materials like metals, Carrara marble, and hardwood floors are interpreted with a fresh eye. Furnishings are sleek and modern. The highlight is the art collection, consisting of 120 original pieces of pop and modern art. The most monumental, a 7-foot white elephant statue by Santa Fe artist Fredrick Prescott, greets guests outside the main entry. In the lobby, a 54inch round acrylic painting by Orit Fuchs commands attention and draws the eye to the rest of the collection, which includes works by Japanese-American painter Kenzo Okada, New York artist Donald Baechler, legendary painter Robert Rauschenberg, and others. Of note are the powder room sketches by Doodle Boy, a 10-year-old British artist who created the

drawings with marker, incorporating a hidden elephant in each. The four-story hotel is arranged around a courtyard that houses the swimming pool and outdoor seating for the signature restaurant, LoLa 41. This is the heart of the property, and it buzzes with energy, especially at night when the dim lights create a magical atmosphere. Although the hotel is steps away from Royal Poinciana Way—the town’s original Main Street—the courtyard feels secluded thanks to clever landscaping and an eye-popping design that turns the focus inward. Rooms and suites range in size from 510 to 3,000 square feet and are so tastefully appointed that you feel more like a guest in a private home. The Tea Whisperer

rom the time Nella Fusco was 9 years old, she had stomach issues. Always either diagnosed as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), her ailment caused her to spend years in and out of the hospital, never fully understanding the underlying root of her problems. Nearly 13 years later, a friend and health coach introduced her to kombucha. Every day, Fusco would drink 16 ounces of the fermented, lightly effervescent tea, and within a week, she noticed a colossal difference. Her GERD went away, and the IBS settled down. “It was the pinnacle of when I realized what fermented foods could do,” Fusco, 34, says of the beverage that changed her life. As the owner of Whispering Oak, a Fort Pierce–based kombucha company, Fusco is now changing the lives of others as well. “Figuring out how to make the best product that actually helps people without jumping on a trend that’s really big right now is what’s most important to me,” she says. Part of being the best has to do with her brewing process. While kombucha is normally brewed in stainless steel vessels or glass, Fusco brews hers in American oak barrels. “Microbes and bacteria love porous wood,” she says of the two most essential

components in kombucha. “They flourish because there’s constant air flow, so it creates this rich environment for the microbes and bacteria to have this beautiful community.” Recognizing that the word “bacteria” doesn’t necessarily bring with it a positive connotation, Fusco explains that the human body has nearly 40 trillion microbes. When those microbes begin to deplete, bad bacteria will grow and stomach ailments can arise. “A huge portion of our immune system starts in the stomach,” she says. A one-woman operation, Fusco brews 20 to 50 gallons of kombucha in eight oak barrels for about 30 days. She makes the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY), which is central to preparing kombucha. A pellicle that grows in harmony on the top of every fermentation barrel, the SCOBY feeds off of the sugar and tannins from the tea. Fusco flavors each batch with seasonal fruits, roots, and vegetables and

uses a pump, the closest thing to a machine she uses, to transfer the kombucha to the kegs. The end product is handmade, organic, and a perfect balance of sweet and sour, just as Fusco says kombucha ought to be. The beverages can be found in health food stores like HHH Organics in Stuart and Peggy’s Natural Foods in Hobe Sound, as well as at local markets like Market on

Main in Stuart, where Fusco can be found every Sunday. The Chainsaw Master

eep in the Florida swamps, where the murky water is as still as the alligators that skulk beneath it, Scotty McAllister is on a mission. In a small boat with a winch in tow, he navigates through low tide in search of driftwood. For most, the fallen cypress and cedar trees often found in the swamps are useless. But for McAllister, they are the cornerstone of his work. For 35 years, 57-year-old McAllister has made his living sculpting aquatic and land animals. With a chainsaw and grinder—tools that once covered his arms in scars—he has created sailfish, manatees, dolphins, bears, giraffes, pelicans, and eagles. For the last 10 years, however, his area of expertise has evolved; he now carves bird and fish heads on the ends of the wood he collects along the riverbanks of Florida. Traveling to places like St. John’s River and Cypress Springs, McAllister gathers logs in their natural state. Whether they’re clad in barnacles, have roots that jaggedly branch out, or are stained with a reddish hue from Mother Nature’s touch, he leaves them virtually intact, carving on one side. “Sometimes I’ll twist the log around 100 times before I see the fish,” says McAllister. “I see a fish in almost everything now.” He ventures into swamps to procure material that cannot be found on the beach— material that has been petrified after years of baking in the sun, is impenetrable from bugs and rot, and does not crack. “It’s all about the wood,” he says. “Even my dog’s name is Woody.” A Michigan native, McAllister moved to Jensen Beach in the late 1980s. He was selling sunglasses along the Jensen Beach Causeway when he met a guy named Gary Vaughn, who was carving animals. He paid Vaughn $1,000 to teach him his craft, and together they began making creations out of cypress and cedar logs. As he gained momentum, McAllister started selling his goods from Key West up to northern Maine and showed his art in state fairs and renowned art shows, often winning first place. Today, McAllister is semi-retired. His kids are grown, and he and his girlfriend are enjoying life on the river in Fort Pierce. But you can still find his pieces at local South Florida markets, including the Fort Pierce Farmer’s Market, where his booth is always one of the busiest. uietly sitting in the corner of a Panera Bread in Palm Beach Gardens, Ashley Belford is trying to post her latest design on her company’s social media page, to no avail. The signal is sluggish. She, on the other hand, is not. Looking up from her phone, Belford unveils a resplendent smile that complements her sun-kissed skin and blueish-green eyes. The deep taupe-colored tank top and white elastic-waist shorts she’s wearing are adorable indeed—but it’s her jewelry that is the pièce de résistance of the ensemble. The dangly, tassel hoop earrings perfectly match her top. And the bracelets—a wicker bangle, beaded stones, and a white geode—are at once chic and casual. The whole look screams vibrant, trendy, and approachable—a fitting description for the owner of the handmade jewelry company known as Tassel Soul. A Jupiter native, Belford, 41, began making jewelry seven years ago. She had seen a pair of earrings on a TV show that she wanted. They were hot pink and magenta but, at $200, a bit too pricey. She went online, searching the internet for material and wholesale vendors, until she was able to find all the pieces to re-create the earrings for a fraction of the price. That’s how it started. Soon she found herself making

more earrings for herself, as well as for her sister and friends. People would post pictures of her earrings, creating a demand around them. She expanded her creations to include beaded bracelets and necklaces, selling them on Etsy, Facebook, and Instagram. Then wholesale and retail stores, like Tide and Table in Tequesta, wanted a piece of the action. Having a background in interior design, Belford has always possessed a creative eye, but she also had a practical goal in mind. “I wanted to make pieces for women who like to be stylish and fun but also for moms who have budgets,” she says. Her three sons— Ryder, 12, Cooper, 10, and Zane, 7—help her dye beads or load the car during art shows, and she keeps her prices between $10 and $50. Belford has since teamed up with another local mom and business owner, Tristan Whitaker, to offer customers something new. The founder of Love Hate Apparel, Whitaker, 43, makes local- and beach-inspired tops by hand in her Jupiter home, sometimes with the help of her daughters Hope, 9, and Georgia, 6. The poly-cotton blend she uses gives the tops a soft, breezy feel. And the fact that she has zeroed in on Jupiter living as one of her themes has given her line a competitive edge. Whitaker made a few shirts for Tassel Soul. And then, she says, “Ashley posted a picture with a caption that said, ‘Tassels and Tanks,’ and I knew we had something.” The two women partnered to create the now-popular monthly subscription boxes, where they pair a tank top with jewelry at a discounted price. They have some other ideas in the works, especially for the holiday season, and they’re talking about expanding their partnership to include the artwork of another local business owner. hen Brittney Hurt talks about her adolescence, it’s as though she is recounting the life of someone else. It’s a story marred by trauma that involves living in 30 different foster homes, being separated from her twin sister at 13 years old, and then sexually trafficked a year later. By all accounts, Hurt could have wound up another statistic, destined to live a life of poverty, mental illness, addiction, or crime. But nothing could be further from reality. Today, the 29-year-old wife and mother of three is thriving—and so is her business. Hurt is the founder of Native Armor, a company dedicated to brewing potent and delicious elderberry syrup, and she and her business

partner, Ashley Lancelot, are knocking it out of the park. Elderberry is an antioxidant-rich medicinal herb that Hurt procures from the European strain Sambucus nigra. Every week, she and Lancelot brew the organic berry, refrigerating it in amber bottles in a kitchen in Port St. Lucie. They add cinnamon, clove, ginger, and Manuka honey to pack a powerful, immunity-building punch. Hurt started out making the syrup for family and friends. At 11 weeks pregnant with her first child, she was in the emergency room with the flu and a 103-degree fever. Her doctor prescribed Tamiflu, but while she was desperate to get better, she was even

more desperate to keep her baby safe from any risks associated with the drug. Torn, she began researching natural alternatives. She came across a recipe that incorporated elderberry as an ingredient and gave it a shot. After 24 hours of drinking the tea, her symptoms were gone. A concoction of elderberry syrup and Manuka honey became her go-to elixir. “Whenever I heard a sneeze I didn’t like, a runny nose, anything, I would turn to elderberry,” she says. “Making it from scratch and adding Manuka honey is the best way.” It wasn’t until her third pregnancy in 2019 that Hurt’s husband suggested she launch an elixir business. “I thought, noone is ever going to buy this,” she recalls. “And I don’t know why, but I decided to give it a name.” In that moment, as the words “Native Armor” rolled off her tongue, her vision unfolded and her business took off. This past July, Stuart Main Street introduced something new to the Market on Main: a Kids Market, where young entrepreneurs showcased their precocious talents and business acumen. Children stood behind their booths—which were filled with everything from homemade pastries and organic quail eggs to sugar scrubs and handmade crafts—beaming with pride. River Robbins, a 3-year-old CEO of a lemonade stand, handled his own transactions. Nearby, siblings and artists Carmella and Ben Rodriguez talked about their inspiration (for Carmella, it is nature’s bounty; for Ben, it’s his sister, Carmella). Tristan Gray displayed his handmade hardwood shelves, and sisters Gemma and Chloe peddled their custom dog tags. ver since the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia began brewing beer around 5,000 years ago—a magical beverage believed to endow the drinker with health, happiness, and peace of mind—mankind has been smitten with suds. Eventually, boatloads of ale crossed the pond to America (thank you, pilgrims!), and the first brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son, was founded in 1829. In the 1960s, we

saw the rise of the microbrewery, and by the late-1990s, many brewers were using nontraditional ingredients like herbs, spices, and fruit to produce super-flavored swills. In Florida, the first original craft brewery, McGuire’s Irish Pub in Destin, opened its doors in 1988, and today there are more than 350 breweries across the state. Here, a list of some top-notch spots right here on the Treasure Coast that will send you to hops heaven.

hen Chris and Amanda Cischke started leasing the former Illuminati Gastropub in 2018, they imbued the space with a coastal cool/industrial vibe; added an 81-foot-long, wave-shaped counter in acid blue; and tapped Stuart artist Amber Moran to dot the walls with whimsical murals depicting marine life. A few months later, Ocean Republic Brewing opened its doors, becoming Martin County’s sole microbrewery at the time (others that had opened in the county had closed down by this time). Recipes are co-created by Chris and brewmaster Matt Webster, formerly of Tequesta Brewing Company, who also oversees the automated-brewing process that yields a slew of craft brews ranging from IPAs and Belgian tripels to pilsners and porters. Since opening its cidery and taproom in 2018, Pierced Ciderworks in Fort Pierce has been producing some of the state’s finest ciders. hen Sailfish Brewing Company opened in April 2013, it was lauded as the first commercial brewer on the Treasure Coast. After growing the company from a one-barrel system to three in four years, owner David BuShea moved the brewery from the historic Harry Hill House to its current perch on 2nd Street. Inside the “house of hops,” guests can work their way through an array of beers on tap in a sun-dappled tasting room filled with humorous works of nautical life by Pompano Beach artist Steve Diossy. An expansive, outdoor patio encourages plein air tippling along with games of cornhole and people-watching. In addition to Sunrise City IPA, White Marlin Wit, and other standards, head brewer David Cavasinni regularly rolls out new variations and treatments. ometimes bigger is just plain better. When Islamorada Beer Company, a prominent brewery and distillery in the Florida Keys, opened Islamorada Brewery North in Fort Pierce, it became the biggest craft beer producer on the Treasure Coast. Four close friends hatched the idea of starting a beer-brewing business during a fishing trip in the Bahamas—and it paid off in a big way. Their innovative and light-bodied beers are now best sellers at bars, restaurants, and supermarkets across the Sunshine State. Awash in the same vivid hues of yellow and blue as its coastal counterpart, the 25,000-square-foot Fort Pierce outpost serves a rotation of beers with boating and beach-centric names like the wheat ales Sandbar Sunday and No Tan Lines, which are handwritten daily on a chalkboard in the tasting room. KidSanctuary Campus Making a difference in the lives of local foster care children HISTORY OF KIDSANCTUARY CAMPUS KidSanctuary Campus was established in 2009 by local Philanthropist, Connie M. Frankino and today has four debtfree cottages on a secure 10-acre campus in West Palm Beach for local at-risk foster care children who receive 24-hour care in a family style home, until they are reunited with parents, adopted, or age out of the system. Today, more than ever, this campus is a vital resource to our community due to the Covid-19 outbreak and the increased need for the placement of foster care children. MISSION Our mission is to ensure that each child that lives on campus receives the benefits of a sense of belonging and permanency in a caring and positive environment that nurtures self-esteem and hope. WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW KidSanctuary Campus is reaching out to local community leaders for support to help us to complete and name the campus and build an Enrichment Center. The new Angel Crossing Enrichment Center will be a refuge where intervention programs, educational tutoring, case management, mentoring, social initiatives and family visitations will be scheduled for the children living in our cottages. IMPACT To date over 100 children have resided on campus with some of them staying as long as six years. The children are some of the most vulnerable in the foster care system and they come to our cottages with mental, physical and educational challenges. Many of them are behind in their academic performances and some are at least two years behind their current grade level. The new Enrichment Center will empower the children and give them the space and tools they need to enable them to be able to do their work at grade level. Our Community Partners will design and schedule programs that will further enhance their

social and emotional well being, giving them clear direction and vision for a brighter tomorrow. SUPPORT THE COMPLETION OF THE CAMPUS AND THE ANGEL CROSSING ENRICHMENT CENTER Proud to announce that we have broken ground to build the new Enrichment Center and are in the final Phase of construction in our Development Plan. We are happy to report that we received our first 1 million-dollar gift toward our 3.5 million dollar goal and have raised another $500K in pledges towards this 1000 Wishes Campaign.
